1. Hannah Morse – Music Video Final Edit Evaluation
Before starting the process of coming up with ideas and making the music video I had to research
from other music videos that already exist. The first type of research that I did was the different
type’s codes and conventions which you can find in a music video. I did this by choosing three
different artists from different genres and three different types of music video styles. The three
different types of music video styles that you see are concept, narrative and performance. Concept
music videos don’t have a storyline in them and are usually classed as being surreal and unusual.
Narrative music videos are the ones that have a clear storyline to them which usually relates to the
lyrics that are sung. A performance based music video shows the artist or band in a casual
environment and they are seen singing or performing straight to the camera and sometimes have an
audience who are usually fans at a concert. The three artists that I used for my research were
Rihanna, Lady Gaga and Primal Scream. I chose these three artists because they are each from a
different type of music genre and each video I chose to analyse was a different style. By choosing
three different videos I found out various types of codes and conventions from different styles of
music videos. For example, in a narrative music video I noticed that the structure relates to the
equilibrium theory. You know this because the storyline starts off positive the something happens to
disrupt the positive vibe in the music video and then the rest of it is showing what the characters are
doing to get back to normality. In comparison a concept video would not show anything like this as
they never have a storyline to them.
After doing that research I had enough knowledge and thoughts to begin my music video ideas
generation. I started off by making a mind map of ideas for a narrative structured video. Showing
that the genre of music I wanted to use for the video would be indie pop. I then used the stuff that I
learnt about codes and conventions to come up with potential ideas for this type of music video.
Using a mind map for coming up with ideas made it easier for me as I could use different categories
for different sections and factors to do with the music video. These categories included; editing and
digital effects, type of video, audience, type of characters, genre and conventions, camera work,
props and costume, lighting, visual style, settings and lyrical meaning. When I finished coming up
with stuff you would normally find in a narrative based music video I went on to come up with
further ideas. This process included making artist research into three different bands and artist
explaining them in words through a picture. As well as this I made a powerpoint of ideas for a
potential music video. These ideas included lighting, genre, costume and props. By doing this is
showed that I took my time to research into different narrative based videos to help me
understanding them better and get ideas of what makes them look good.

The next thing that I did was researching different types of job roles for the production of a music
video. The four jobs that I researched and found out what their jobs roles are were director, camera
operator, lighting and sound editor. By doing this it made me understand the different job roles that
are needed the make a music video. It also helped to find out their responsibilities and why they are
important. I then went on to make a music video production budget sheet to show how much it
would cost to make the music video. Before making it I made a list of different equipment that
would be needed as well as listing what website they came from and the price of what they would
cost to hire per day. The budget that I was given for this was £4,000. The things that I had to put on
this budget sheet were; camera, lighting, sound recording kit, locations and contingency. On the list
of equipment I made sure that I showed exactly what type of product it was e.g. name of camera
and the exact cost of how much it would be per day as well as putting an image of each product next
to the description of it. By doing this budget sheet it helped me to understand how a real music
video shoot would work and how much it would possibly cost.
After researching that I began to come up with a general idea for a music video. I started off by
choosing a song which I thought was appropriate for a performance/concept based video. The song
that I decided to use was McFly ‘Friday Night’. The reason I chose this song was because the tempo
is upbeat and lively and comes from the pop genre which is something you usually see in a
performance based music video. I then came up with a general description of what the music video
would look like. The main idea that I came up with is that it would be a bunch of random clips of a
group of friends out and about with each other and just showing their general life. Whilst coming up
with a general concept I decided to do some research through other artist that might be similar and
have the kind of music video I wanted mine to end up looking like. I looked at five different music
videos from five different artists. The five artists that I looked at were Lucy Spraggan, Black Eyed
Peas, Justin Bieber, Katy Perry and Rihanna. The reason that I chose these certain videos was
because they had the look I intended to use. All of these music videos I looked at and researched
into had a party and upbeat feel to them as well as some of them just being random ‘day in the life’
clips. When I finished the concept of the music video idea I briefly put what locations I was thinking
of using in the music video. The locations that I came up with were house party, woods, shopping
centre and park. I came up with these locations because these would be the main places that you
would see a group of teenage friends hanging around with each other at the weekend. At the end of
the concept description I noted down some concerns that may occur whilst filming the music video.
Some of these concerns were design requirements, various costumes and variety of locations.
The next thing that I did after the concept of the music video was my first draft script. I started off by
looking at the actual music video for the song that I chose. I did this so that the ideas that I came up
which didn’t relate exactly the same to the music video for the song that already existed. As I already
decided that it would be a performance/concept based music video I made sure that I showed that
there was a lot of eye-level, medium shots. Most of the way through the script I showed that there

would be a lot of low-key lighting being used and cuts that went with the beat of the music. By
making the cuts fit in with the beat of the music it would make the flow of the music video a lot
smoother. Throughout the draft script for the music video I showed evidence of shot angles, lighting,
music, sound effects, lyrics and shot movements.
We then came together as a group of three and read through each other’s first draft scripts. Whilst
doing this, as a group we decided which one we wanted to use for our music video which we would
make together as a group. During our first meeting I was absent which meant the other two people
in my group were unable to read my script. Whilst I wasn’t there they decided as a group to change
the characters from Beth’s script to one main character instead of three. This decision was made
because it would be easier to focus on one character. At the end of the first meeting Georgia filled in
a meeting record sheet. This record sheet shows exactly what happened during the meeting. For
example; what was discussed, who was there, what time it started, what time the meeting ended
and where it took place. After doing this we all went on to doing a second draft script each of Beth’s
first draft script. By doing this it meant that we could individually try and improve the first draft
script that got made. At the end of doing this we held another meeting as a group. During the
second meeting we decided as a group that Beth’s final draft script was the one that we were going
to use for our music video. The reason for this was because the song that had been chosen relates
more to our intended target audience. We also decided as a group that the concept behind the
music video would work a lot better in the whole which will give the video a more professional look
it.
Before actually going to make our music video we had to do a lot of pre-production. This pre-
production included; music video storyboards, risk assessment, call sheets, music video schedules
and locations. As a group we firstly made storyboards to match our chosen final draft script by Beth.
We spilt the script between the three of us meaning that we each had a page each to make a
storyboard with. By doing this is made is quicker and easier to make them. The storyboard was made
to exactly match what was written on our chosen final script. Individually we then went on to make
a risk assessment each. On this risk assessment we had to come up with three possible risks that
could accrue whilst making the music video then rate it on a scale of 1 to 5 on how dangerous it
could be. For example, in the risk assessment that I created I showed that wire from lighting could
be a problem and gave it a rating of 3. When we had each made a risk assessment as a group we
made a call sheet and schedule for when we were going to go out and shoot our music video. The
call sheet for the music video included; contacts and information, schedule of day and planned
schedule of dates and times for filming. Whilst making the call sheet we decided as a group what
days we were going to go out and film and which shots were going to be filmed on certain days. For
example, we decided that we would film shots 1, 2 and 3 on Wednesday at 12pm.
Now that we had done all our pre-production for our music video we could go out as a group and
film. When it came to shooting the music video the weather wasn’t right to film outside for some of
our shots we wanted to film on our first day of filming. This meant that we had to swap some of the
shots around and do the filming that was needed for shots that were inside on that day. By changing
days of when certain shots got filmed made sure that we didn’t get behind on our filming schedule.
Whilst filming we did decide to change some of the shots that were organically on our script. This
happened because we thought that some shots would look better from a different angle. For
example, we changed some close up shots to long or medium shots. Another thing we did whilst
4. Hannah Morse – Music Video Final Edit Evaluation
filming was that we decided to change some of the script by adding new shots that weren’t in it at
originally. By doing this when it came to editing the shots together it gave use more choice and
variation. During the stage of filming we went to various locations. These locations were in the area
around Walkden and Manchester city centre which was shown on our call sheet made in the post-
production stage. When it came to filming the party scene of the music video we changed the
location to someone else’s house instead of one of our own in the group. This made it easier to film
as the house we ended up filming in was bigger and had more space. Whilst filming this part of the
music video we came up with more ideas that weren’t organically on the script or storyboard. A
problem that we had whilst shooting the music video was the lighting. This was mainly a problem
whilst shooting the scenes for the party. We overcame this problem when it came to editing the
music video. We also added more locations whilst filming. For example, we shot some stuff inside
college showing what we did day-to-day.
The next thing that had to be done was the editing of the music video which we did individually. I did
the first part of the editing on Adobe Premier Pro. I began to make a rough edit of the music video.
The first thing that I did before editing was renaming all the footage that we had filmed and
imported it all. I then started to begin to make it following the storyboard that we had originally
chosen by Beth. Whilst putting some of the clips together I added stuff that wasn’t in the storyboard
and swapped some footage around. I did this because when it came to putting it together some clips
didn’t make sense or look right being next to each other so I improved it by changing it around.
Whilst doing this rough edit I didn’t insert any colour changes or transitions as I wanted to see what
it would look like by just placing clips together and cropping them. I also changed the speed of some
of the clips to either slow them down on make them faster to fit in with the time of the music which
is something I also did with the cuts of the footage. By doing this it made the music video have a
better and smoother flow to it. When I had finished the rough edit of the music video I did an
evaluation on it. In this evaluation I explained what I wanted to change when it came to editing it
again for the final edit. The main thing that I wanted to change was the colour of the whole music
video by making it have a vintage effect on it. I also showed how I wanted to change the contrast
and brightness on the party scene shots because they were too dark and by doing this it would make
them brighter and clearer. Another thing that I said was changing and maybe re-shooting some clips
that weren’t very clear but this is something that I didn’t end up doing because when it came to
editing it again changing the brightness helped. One of the final things I explained was that I wanted
to add to my final edit was a few split screens and some shots in black and white. Overall, I thought
that my rough edit of the music video was done well and was how I wanted it to look minus the
colour effect I wanted to add to it apart from adding a few split screens.
After doing the rough edit evaluation I went on to do the final edit of the music video. I did all of this
is Adobe After Effects as I decided redo or change apart from applying split screens. On this final edit
the main thing that I changed was the colour effect of the whole video. I decided to do this as I had
5. Hannah Morse – Music Video Final Edit Evaluation
seen it on some other music videos that I had researched at the beginning and I thought it gave the
music video an overall better look to it. By changing the colour effect it gave it a more professional
look to it and gave it a bit of consistency by making it all look the same. As well as that it made it
easier for me as I didn’t need to go out and re-shoot anything that originally looked too dark due to
low key lighting which happened in the party scenes of the music video. Due to the fact I didn’t have
to go out and re-shoot certain shots and scenes meant that it didn’t take up anymore of my time and
I had longer to perfect the overall look of the music video. The last thing that I edited was the end of
the video by making it fade out to black at the end. I did this to show to the audience that it was the
end of the video. I also made sure that the music faded out at the same time the video was faded
out proving a smoother flow to it. Overall, the music video turned out exactly how I wanted it to
even though it didn’t fit exactly to the storyboard it was still similar and under the same concept.
