2. Jingle
With the radio station I have researched and found. Overall, the codes and conventions that are used
are very similar to all news radio broadcasts and this is because they all have a ‘jingle’ and this is
necessary because a ‘jingle’ is the first thing you hear when another radio broadcast is being
introduced and gives it an identity and the jingle also sets the scene in some way in showing the
viewer what type of station they are listening to and what they should expect when listening to the
broadcast. for example, if you was listening to a ‘news broadcast’ the jingle is most likely to be serious
and sound slightly contemporary with some form of classical within it, this is because this type of
music has a more serious feel to. If you used ‘pop music’ for a serious event it is a ‘juxtaposition’ and
this is when the music does not fit the scene or setting. You can also tell from the jingle that is played
that it relates to the ‘uses and gratifications’ and this is because if it a more serious jingle it will be
directed to maybe a slightly older audience. However, if the jingle is very upbeat and current it will
most likely be directed to the younger audience. All jingles have the same codes and conventions and
this is because they all have the identity of the radio station and all identify what frequency the radio
station is being broadcasted on. They all have the same codes and conventions so that we are all
familiar with what a jingle is.
3. Recording Techniques
The Recording Techniques are completely different within different radio stations and this is because
depending on the event the presenter is talking about their technique that they are talking and what
questions they will ask will be different. For example, if there was an event that you could elaborate
on, you wouldn’t ask questions that could have a reply such as yes or no. You would ask a question
that could get a detailed answer with. With the news broadcasts i have studied, they all have ‘vox
pops’ and this is to get the publics opinion on the matter. Also that with news broadcasts they always
have a professional for the matter and in my radio broadcast we had the football manager for Grimsby
Town Football Club. Also depending on what age range you direct your radio Broadcast to the mode
of address will change and this means that if you have a younger audience you’re mode of address
will be less formal and you wouldn’t use language that the younger audience couldn’t understand. You
may also use some slang and this is so you would have a connection with the audience. However, if
you was directing your radio broadcast to a higher audience, the language that you would use would
be more formal and you may use more challenging words because the older generation may have a
higher intellect.
4. Structure of Radio Broadcast
Overall, with the radio broadcasts i have researched and studied they all have similar structure and
what i mean by this is that the way they are presented are similar and what order the stories are in are
also similar. This links back to ‘Galtung and Ruge’ and this is where the stories are arranged
depending on impact and threshold and what emotional connection they have with the audience. With
this in mind, the stories that i have chosen such as ‘skint’ might not have a serious threshold where it
is a very serious event and awful things happen but it has a strong emotional connection with the
audience and also has a personal connection and this is because some of the people that watch skint
live in Grimsby and might not be happy with how grimsby is being portrayed so they will in some cases
give more publicity to skint so this is why i have chosen it as my main story. However, generally you
get the high impact story’s first and then the low impact stories that don’t have much effect on the
audience closer to the bottom. Also from my research of news bulletins, The high impact headlines are
first announced and they also get more time to talk about rather than the low impact headlines that get
less time to talk about.
7. Compare News Stories.
The news stories in our radio broadcast are more related to the younger audience and this is because
the stories we have chose will have a lot of discussion within the younger audience at this moment in
time. For example, the story about the collision on Stallingborough road relates to the younger
audience because our audience is between 16-20 so this means that they are around that age that are
most likely to be driving so they will need to know what roads are closed. Another example is skint and
this relates to the younger audience because it is a hot programme on TV at the minute and the
younger audience are the ones who are at the sharp end of the knife. however, the existing radio
broadcast has stories that will involve a variety of ages and this is because their stories are not
targeting a certain age but if you was going to say they target a certain age it would mostly be the
older generation and this is because the younger generation don’t really listen to local news and I have
found this information out through the survey i did earlier in the course so i know what the older
generation are likely to listen too and what stories they will want to hear and what stories the younger
generation will want to hear.
8. Comparison.
With the jingle my Radio broadcast has made, the jingle has many codes and conventions within it and
one of these is identifying the radio station. Another convention would be stating what frequency the
broadcast is on. Another convention would be that the music is very contemporary and has a slight
classical edge to it and this is because it is supposed to set the scene and in this case it would be
serious. The other radio broadcast that i have provided jingle differs to mine because it doesn’t state
what frequency the radio station is on. However, it still identifies what radio station you are listening to
and the jingle itself is more upbeat than compared to the one i have created and this might be because
the new that they are talking about might not be as serious as the news we have chosen. On the other
hand, the bulletins they have chosen are fairly similar to the ones we have chosen and this is relating
to ‘Galtung and Ruge’ and this is where they have placed the most serious headline and story first and
we have done this with our radio broadcast so they both have that in common. Another similarity is
that my radio broadcast and the real radio broadcast both have ‘stings’ and this a short jingle and we
have both placed them after the headlines are announced and this is to give some space between the
headlines and the detailed description of the stories. Also, the rhythm and mode of address of the real
news broadcast differs to our new broadcast and this is because theirs is more formal and uses more
explanatory lexis and this is because it might be directed to a higher age audience and because my
radio broadcast is directed to a younger audience, the vocabulary isn’t as superior or the younger
audience wouldn’t be able to understand it.
9. Comparison.
Also, the editing is different because with the real radio broadcast, they will have professionals doing it
which will mean their radio broadcast will be more professional and have a better quality of sound.
However, the fact that i did the editing for my radio broadcast means that it won’t be of higher quality as
compared to the real one because i am not a professional and it is only my second time using the editing
so some of my broadcast may not run and smoothly and fade into different part compared to the real
broadcast. Additionally, the vox pops i have used and the real radio broadcast are fairly similar and this is
because it is getting the public opinion on the matter and the opinions that are provided are subjective.
Also the questions that my radio broadcast have asked to the specialist interview compared to the real
radio broadcasts specialist interview are also similar and this is because the questions that we asked aren’t
questions that can be answered with yes or no and they can get a detailed answer out of. However, the
questions that we ask don’t offend people. Overall, the real radio broadcast compared to my radio
broadcast are different because the real radio broadcast will have a lot more specialist equipment and it
will be very expensive. However, the equipment i was provided and software won’t be as detailed and
won’t get a more professional and smooth sound out of it compared to the real radio broadcast. Overall,
the codes and conventions that are used in my radio broadcast and the existing one are similar and this is
because they are both talking about news. Another reason is that my broadcast is directed at the younger
audience and this is means that the jingle different compared to the existing broadcast which may be
directed at a slightly older audience because of the stories they have used.
