Radio news reviews
1. Radio News Story Evaluation
The first news story in which I had to present was to be a copy only story; this is where a
presenter will just read the story and nothing else. My copy only story was about a recent
car collision on the East Lancs, because of this it could affect college student on their way to
college and also make them aware of the dangers of dangerous driving. When looking at
the negative aspects of this news story and how I presented it I think it could be been done
more like a breaking news sort of style, and also with the tone of my voice I think it could
have been said a lot more better like instead of sounding quite sad and drab. Now onto the
positives I think the story itself works quite well because this is quite a serious story and this
was first on the radio show and I think this works really well. The presentation style like I
mentioned before isn’t how it should have been I think it could have been more serious but
also enthusiastic in a non-excited way to get the serious message across. Delivery of the
story like I mentioned before also was quite drab like there was nothing too it and I like I
could really improve if I was to do it again. The sound quality of my copy only story was
recorder on a college recorder and I think it picked up my voice really well and not that
much of background noise. The editing process when it came to this first story I used
because it was quite recent story and because it was also breaking news for example people
were killed in a car crash I decided add use a breaking news backing tracking so it would
make the audience want to tune in and listen to more what was being said. I think for when
it comes to the target audience I could have based it more in the area of the college even
though the crash is in area I think I could of possibly found a car crash nearer to the college
so it had more relevance to the students. If was to make another copy only radio show and
do it again next time I would definitely fit my tone of voice to which the style of the story is
for example if it was a serious news story then I would use more of a serious tone in my
copy only news story.
My second news story is an interview story with students of Eccles College asking them
questions about the voting age and this year’s election. I think the target audience for this
was matched quite okay because the people who I was interviewing were of the age of
voting or just missed the gap to vote. When it comes to the positive aspects of my radio
story I think the questions I asked were put together really well and the answers I got back
were just as good and really got to the point. When it comes to the negative aspects I there
were some which could of improved the show as a whole, for example my tone of voice
didn’t have that that interviewer style and I think it would of made it a lot more realistic.
Also the background noise and the volume of my voice was quite contrasted between the
two. The purpose of this interview was to find out who could vote in the election, who they
knew was running and other small details, I think it came across as quite informative and
gave you an insight of how much students knew about politics. My presentation style was
quite dull and not very enthusiastic when it came to the interview, the delivery of the story
was robotic I would say for example the way I was asking questions also the sound of the
audio was quite loud and with some background noise but I kind of think this worked well
2. because it sound more realistic. The editing process was quite easy and straight forward
because all I had to do really was edit the dead space in between the questions.
Now moving onto the final news story and this was about legal highs such as nitrous oxide.
The story was about the dangers of legal highs and interviews people of the public who are
student age and also asking what they are, if they know what they can do and the dangers.
Now onto to positive aspects, personally I think the story was quite informative and gave a
good insight into the legal highs. The negative aspects would be again like I have mentioned
a few times before is how my tone of voice didn’t really match the interview style like for
example I could have had more of an enthusiastic tone and had more of an informative
style. The purpose of the interview was to inform young students of the dangers of legal
highs and question if they would ever try them now that they are aware of what they can
do. I think presentation style was done much better than the others because I had more
experience from the other interviews when it came to asking questions etc. I think the
delivery of the story was okay because as well as asking questions I also added some
informative information which helped the story of legal highs and when it comes to the
sound of quality I think it was the same as the other because it wasn’t too loud or too quite
so it worked really well. The editing process was quite simple very similar to my other
interview all that came about was editing the dead air in-between questions and answers
etc. and also any mistakes which were made. When it comes to the overall programme I
think it all the stories work really well together for example in my copy only stories I have a
breaking news one and Lewis has one about a celebrity interest so we have a very mixed
selection of stories that all work together really well and also we did a live cross over about
the voting age and this gave us the chance to combine the two stories so it had quite a
professional style. The editing process took a while because of all the different audio in
which we had to put together and all the different sound effects but as a whole I think it
worked really well. I think we met the target audience because of all the relevance between
students and the stories. If I had to something different I would definitely do a more wide
range of stories, using all types of radio terminology to make it as professional as possible.
