2. From this question, we can see that 100% of the responses said that they would watch
‘The Phoenix’ based on our trailer. This shows that our trailer was successful with our
target audience and can see that our soap opera would be successful on the institution
BBC2. It was important that our trailer was as successful as possible so that our audience
would be “informed, educated and entertained”, which was our main objective when
creating our trailer, as this is the BBC’s mission statement, and we wanted our trailer to fit
with this.
3. This question also shows how 100% of the people asked thought that the soundtrack used
in the trailer fit well with it. It was important that the soundtrack fit with the trailer
because we wanted it to create suspense for our audience so that they would be
entertained and would want to watch ‘The Phoenix’. Also, the soundtrack used also had to
suit the themes shown throughout the trailer including death and conflict. Therefore, we
needed a soundtrack which matched our themes in order to make our trailer look
professional and leave our audience in suspense.
4. The theme of time in our trailer is clear throughout our trailer, as everyone responded yes.
The theme of time was shown in our trailer, through cuts of a timer ticking down
throughout the trailer, showing how time is running out for the three suspects. It was
important that our theme of time was shown clearly as it helps the audience to
understand the narrative of our trailer, and also keeps our audience entertained as they
are left in suspense, wondering if the main female protagonist is dead or alive, and if she
is chasing the three suspects.
5. All those who answered my survey responded that the editing used in our trailer did fit
with the theme of time. This shows how our group was successful in editing our trailer as
our audience thought that it looked professional and was creative. The use of the rewind
effect was a key element of editing in our trailer as we wanted to clearly display the
theme of time in our trailer as well as keep our audience engaged through being more
experimental.
6. From this question, we can see how
the majority of people considered the
themes in our trailer to be relatable to
our target audience. This is because we
have addressed social issues in society
which are stereotypically linked to the
younger generation, for example the
use of drugs. Therefore, by addressing
current social issues, our audience may
be able to personally relate and
identify (Katz) to the characters in our
trailer. However, half of the people
who responded to this question didn’t
fully agree that our target audience
could completely relate to the themes
shown in our trailer. This could be
because we have used quite a large
age range and therefore not everyone
may be able to relate to issues such as
drugs, however, the majority of people
this age would be able to relate to the
main themes such as drugs, conflict
and relationships in some form.
7. From this question, we can see how the
camera shots and angles used in our
trailer is effective to a certain extent.
This is because we have used a range of
camera angles such as a low angle of
each suspect after they have come into
contact with the main female
protagonist. This is effective as is creates
suspense for the audience as they are all
shown to be involved in her murder, and
therefore the audience are unsure to
who the murderer is. However, some
didn’t agree that the camera shots and
angles used wasn’t completely effective
in our trailer. This could be due to the
repetitiveness of the camera shots and
angles used, as we have used a low
angle for each suspect, and can
therefore be argued that we didn’t use a
large enough range of camera shots and
angles.
8. From this question, we can see how our trailer does completely appeal to our target
audience of 16-24 year olds. This is because we have used young actors who the
audience can personally relate (Katz) to, as well as using actors from different
backgrounds, showing diversity, as society today is becoming more diverse. Our trailer
appeals to our target audience as we have also addressed current social issues in society
today such as conflict and relationships, which many 16-24 year olds are able to relate to.
9. This question shows how many
considered our trailer to fit with the
BBC’s mission statement of “inform,
educate and entertain” which was
important as our trailer was to be
shown on the institution BBC2. We
wanted our trailer to fit with the
BBC’s mission statement as we
wanted our audience to be ‘informed’
and ‘educated’ through current issues
in society being shown throughout,
as well as ‘entertained’ through the
use of cliff hangers and our multi-
stranded narrative so they audience
would be engaged throughout.
10. From this qualitative feedback I have received
via Facebook, I can see that the actors used in
our trailer are effective because they are a
similar age to our target audience and they
can therefore personally relate (Katz) to the
characters. Additionally, as we have addressed
current issues in society, the use of young
actors is also effective because they are able
to personally identify (Katz) themselves with
the situation the characters are in, as the
themes portrayed in our trailer are
stereotypically linked to the younger
generation.
Furthermore, the themes highlighted in our
trailer are also very clear to our audience as
they are shown through enigma clues
(Barthes) such as the drugs, the text as well as
the knife. These all create suspense for the
audience as they are left wondering who the
murderer is as all three suspects are linked to
the main female protagonist.
11. I have also learnt from the
feedback I have received, that the
narrative is shown to be clear
overall, and it creates lots of
suspense and includes many cliff
hangers. It was important to
include cliff hangers in our trailer
in order to keep our audience
entertained, which fits with the
BBC’s mission statement of
“inform, educate and entertain”.
Additionally, the use of sound was
also effective in our trailer, such as
the diegetic sound of the dialogue
used. This was because the use of
dialogue gave the audience
further enigma clues (Barthes) to
keep them in suspense. As well as
this, the soundtrack used is also
effective as it gives the trailer a
very eerie feel to the trailer.
12. Feedback I have also received is how
our trailer ‘The Phoenix’ would
appeal to our target audience of 16-
24 year olds due to the themes
raised such as relationships and
conflict, as the audience are able to
personally relate (Katz) to the
characters. Our trailer would also be
successful on the institution BBC2
because it fills the ‘gap’ as
stereotypically, BBC2 provide for an
older audience, and as our trailer is
aimed at a younger audience, BBC2
are therefore able to reach a larger
audience and appeal to everyone.
Furthermore, our trailer is also seen
to be authentic because of the clock
ticking down, as it is original and not
typically seen in many soap opera
trailers, which makes it look unique
and professional.
