http://clipart-
library.com/clipart/461268.htm
Multiple-Choice Test Questions
❖ an effective and efficient way to
assess learning outcomes
❖ an objective assessment which has
only correct answers from the choices
❖ recommended to have 4 or 5 choices
❖ choices are identified by the letters
http://clipart-
library.com/clipart/461336.htm
Parts of a Multiple-Choice Test
Stem
• Part of the item which presents a problem
• Can be a question, a set of directions or a
statement with an embedded blank
Options/Alternatives
• Refers to the choices given for the item
Key
• Correct choice for the item
Distractors
• Incorrect choices for the item. http://clipart-
library.com/clipart/158631.htm

Distractors
General Guidelines in Constructing a Multiple
Choice Test
❖ Align with specific learning competencies
❖ Give clear directions
❖ Avoid negatively stated items. If negative form is used,
indicator is underlined, capitalized or italicized.
❖ Include a must information as possible in the stem and
keep the options short as possible

General Guidelines in Constructing a Multiple
Choice Test
❖ Avoid using special characters such as “all of the above”, or
any of the above
❖ Edit and proof all items, prompts, and instructions
❖ Avoid verbal association between the stem and the correct
option
General Guidelines in Constructing a
Multiple-Choice Test
❖ Make the stem meaningful

❖ Write the stem as a question
❖ Put the main or central idea of what you want to ask in
the stem, not in the answer choices.
General Guidelines in Constructing a
Multiple-Choice Test
❖ Keep the options approximately equal in length or arrange
them from shortest to longest or longest to shortest
❖ Use each option as the correct answer approximately an
equal number of times
❖ Make all alternatives grammatically consistent with the
stem and parallel in form
❖ Make sure that distractors are plausible
❖ Make sure that there is only one correct or best response

stems or premises to a response or
principle
❖ cover large areas of material without
having to spend much time or effort
on constructing the questions
https://www.pinterest.ph/pin/351914158352544866/
Matching Type Test
Consists of three (3) columns
1st Column - Premises
2nd Column –Alternative/responses
3rd Column – Spaces where the
answers are to be
written

Matching Type Test
Premises - items in the first
column for which a match is
sought
Responses - items in the second
column from which the selection is
made
Answers - to be written on the
spaces provided in the third
column

Editor's Notes

  1. Greetings and check the energy level: Good morning! What is your energy level from the range of 1-10. Let's say hip-hip, hurray! Our topic for today is on Test Construction Guidelines for Multiple Choice and Matching Type Tests. Are you ready? Let's all together unlearn, learn, and relearn.
  2. The specific objectives which are our targets to achieve at the end of the session are: *Discuss the guidelines in constructing multiple choice test and matching type tests *Construct a multiple choice and matching type tests *Share insights on the importance of constructing a good type of test
  3. Let me share to you a quote from Claude Bernard, "It is what we know already that often prevents us from learning." Anybody who wants to share his insights about this? (Call 1 or 2 volunteers) Let us not be contented of what we know, read more...explore more, to learn more.
  4. (A short brainstorming activity. Divide the group into 3 or 4 depending on the size.) Let us have a short group activity. I will give you 5 minutes to share your thoughts on the question "What are the characteristics of a good multiple choice test?" ( After the allotted time, give 2 minutes for each reporter to share their output.) To know the guidelines and the characteristics of a multiple choice test, let us continue our discussion.
  5. What is a multiple choice test? * It is an effective and efficient way to assess learning outcomes because the test items are less susceptible to guessing compared to true/false questions, making them a more reliable means of assessment. They can be used to assess students' ability to: -recall information; -interpret graphs and diagrams; -understand concepts; -discriminate between fact and opinion; -make inferences from data; and. -solve problems. * It is an objective assessment because there is only one answer from the choices. *It is recommended to have 4 or 5 choices to eliminate guessing. *Choices are identified by the letters. -Choose an item format style and follow it consistently. That is, be consistent in the way the stem and answer choices are laid out. If you decide to use capital letters at the beginning of lines (even if not a complete sentence) and periods at the end of lines, then be consistent.
  6. A multiple choice test has two main parts: the STEM and the OPTIONS or ALTERNATIVES * The stem refers to the question or the problem. -Can be a question, a set of directions or a statement with an embedded blank * The options or alternatives refer to the set of answers or choices. The correct answer is the KEY and the incorrect options are the DISTRACTORS.
  7. In the given example, which is the stem of the MC test? -Which one of the following best illustrates the law of diminishing returns? Options? -A. A machine decreased in utility as its parts became worn. B. The population of a country increased faster than the means of subsistence. C. The demand for a farm product increased faster than the supply of the product. D. A factory doubled its labor force and increased production by 50 percent. Key? -A. A machine decreased in utility as its parts became worn. Distractors? -B. The population of a country increased faster than the means of subsistence. C. The demand for a farm product increased faster than the supply of the product. D. A factory doubled its labor force and increased production by 50 percent.
  8. General Guidelines in Constructing a Multiple-Choice Test *Align with specific learning competencies -A test item should be competency-based. (Give specific example) *Provide clear directions. *Avoid negatively stated items. -The stem should be negatively stated only when significant learning outcomes require it. The negative element should be emphasized: underlined, CAPITALIZED, or italicized. *Include a must information as possible in the stem and keep the options short as possible -Be conservative in your use of words. Don’t use excessive words. Minimize as much as possible verbosity * Use vocabulary that is appropriate for the group being tested -The vocabulary used should be within the understanding of intended grade level/learners.
  9. *Avoid using special characters such as “all of the above”, or any of the above -When “all of the above” is used as an answer, test-takers who can identify more than one alternative as correct can select the correct answer even if unsure about other alternative(s). When “none of the above” is used as an alternative, test-takers who can eliminate a single option can thereby eliminate a second option. In either case, students can use partial knowledge to arrive at a correct answer. *Edit and proof all items, prompts, and instructions -This is important to make sure grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling are correct. *Avoid verbal association between the stem and the correct option
  10. *Make the stem meaningful -Make the stem clear and meaningful as possible so the student knows exactly what is being asked. *Avoid long worded stem *Write the stem as a question -A question stem is preferable because it allows the student to focus on answering the question rather than holding the partial sentence in working memory and sequentially completing it with each alternative *Put the main or central idea of what you want to ask in the stem, not in the answer choices -The stem should not contain irrelevant material, which can decrease the reliability and the validity of the test scores
  11. *Keep the options approximately equal in length or arrange them from shortest to longest or longest to shortest -Ideally, keep the answer choices’ length equal or arrange them from the shortest to longest. *Use each option as the correct answer approximately an equal number of times *Make all alternatives grammatically consistent with the stem and parallel in form -Make sure that something in the stem doesn’t give a clue (cue) that will help the student choose the correct answer. -For example, if you use child in the question and children for one or two of the incorrect answer choices, you will be giving a clue that the choices with children are probably not the correct answer. It is important that alternatives • have grammar consistent with the stem. are parallel in form. are similar in length. use similar language (e.g., all unlike textbook language or all like textbook language). *Make sure that distractors are plausible -The function of the incorrect alternatives is to serve as distractors, which should be selected by students who did not achieve the learning outcome but ignored by students who did achieve the learning outcome. *Make sure that there is only one correct or best response -Make sure that only one of the answer choices is the absolutely correct answer. Place the answer choices vertically in logical or numerical order.
  12. There are 11 variations of Multiple Choice Test: 1. Correct answer variety - This is the commonly constructed multiple choice test which measures the knowledge level. The respondents/learners will simple recall the correct answer from the options. 2. Best Answer Variety -This type of multiple choice test mostly measures the comprehension level where the learners are required to identify the best answer from the options.
  13. 3. Incomplete Statement - This type of multiple choice test requires the learners to supply the missing information by choosing the answer from the options. This is comparable to “Fill-in the blanks” test. 4. Negative Stem Variety -The stem is constructed in a negative form, therefore, the indicator is underlined, capitalized or italicized
  14. 5. Mother Stem Variety -A mother stem is provided from which a number of questions are based on. In the given example, the 2 questions are based on the mother stem “In the old days, the farmer worked with horse teams and each horse has four shoes.”
  15. 6. Substitution Variety In the given example, the learners are going to analyze the underlined words and substitute the incorrect one with the correct answer from the options.
  16. 7. Combined Response Variety In this type of multiple choice test, the learners are going to arrange the given choices depending on what is required in the question. In the given example, the learners are asked to arranged the statements to form a story.
  17. 8. Multiple true-false A multiple true or false question represents a multiple-response format that retains the question stem and response option structure of multiple choice questions but requires students to separately mark each option as true or false, rather than selecting one correct option.
  18. 9. Multiple Meanings -In this type of multiple choice test, the learners are going to analyze the statement through context clues. Context clues are hints found within a sentence, paragraph, or passage that a reader can use to understand the meanings of new or unfamiliar words. Based on the given example, what does the word fuel mean? It means a gas used for basic existence. (Letter C)
  19. 10. “If-then” Condition -It is a statement with a hypothesis followed by a conclusion. The hypothesis is the first, or “if,” part of a conditional statement. The conclusion is the second, or “then,” part of a conditional statement. The conclusion is the result of a hypothesis. In the given example, what is the “If” part? What is the “then” part or the conclusion?
  20. 11. Relations and Correlates Relations is the way in which two or more concepts, objects, or people are connected; a thing's effect on or relevance to another. Correlate means having a mutual relationship or connection, in which one thing affects or depends on another. For the given example, what is the relationship between the hammer and the carpenter? The carpenter uses the hammer. So, which is the correct answer for the second pair of words?
  21. Presenting to you some examples of multiple choice questions. The first example measures only the knowledge level. The second example is a memory-plus application MC question. -The key to preparing memory-plus application questions is to place the concept in a life situation or context that requires the students to first recall the fact and then transfer the application of those facts into a situation.
  22. What variation of multiple choice test is this? It uses question that develops the Ability to Interpret Cause-and-Effect Relationships Discuss the example: Why does investing money in common stock protect against loss of assets during inflation?
  23. The next example uses question that develops the Ability to Justify Methods and Procedures (Discuss the example: Why is adequate lighting necessary in a balanced aquarium?
  24. POOR - It has complex multiple choices, measures knowledge level only.
  25. GOOD - This item tests higher order thinking skills because it requires the test takers to apply multilogical thinking and a high level of discrimination to choose the best answer.
  26. POOR - The stem with an initial or interior blank should be avoided -Options are not arrange from shortest to longest or longest to shortest
  27. POOR - Word the question positively. Avoid negatives such as not or except. Using negatives can be confusing to students and can also give an advantage to test-wise students. -Arrangement of the choices -Negative word/s should be capitalized, italicized or bold
  28. GOOD - Well- constructed, the blank is in the last part.
  29. GOOD - As to construction, it is good because it requires critical thinking.
  30. POOR - Put as much of the wording as possible in the stem of the item. State the stem in positive form whenever possible. Arrangement of the choices
  31. POOR - Put as much of the wording as possible in the stem of the item. For improvement: Place the phrase “Polar bears have”in the stem. Choices are descriptive words only.
  32. POOR - Make all alternatives grammatically consistent with the stem of the item and parallel in form. Arrange from longest to shortest.
  33. POOR - Make all alternatives grammatically consistent with the stem of the item and parallel in form. Arrange from longest to shortest. Are there questions before proceeding to the matching type test?
  34. What is a matching type test? (Proceed to the next slide)
  35. *Require students to match a series of stems or premises to a response or principle -Matching questions provide a list of sub-questions along with a list of answers. The respondent must "match" the correct answers with each question. *Cover large areas of material without having to spend much time or effort on constructing the questions -Learners find them easy to read and comprehend -Matching items most often are used to measure lower level knowledge such as persons and their achievements, dates and historical events, terms and definitions, symbols and concepts, plants or animals and classifications.
  36. Matching Type Test -consist of a set of directions, a column of statements, a column of responses and a column for spaces where answers are written.
  37. Read: Premises - items in the first column for which a match is sought, Responses - items in the second column from which the selection is made Answers - to be written on the spaces provided in the third column
  38. Guidelines in Constructing a Multiple Choice Test 1. Use homogenous premises and responses in a single matching exercise -such as persons and their achievements, dates and historical events, terms and definitions, symbols and concepts, plants or animals and classifications. 2. Indicate clearly in the directions the basis for matching where answers should be written -The directions for a matching question need to be specific. Students should be told what they are matching, even if it seems obvious. They should also be told how they are to record their answer. Further, the directions need to clearly state whether an item will be used once or more than once.
  39. 3. Limit a matching exercise to a maximum of 10-15 items. 4. Label each column with a heading that accurately describes its content 5. Keep the responses or answer choices short and logically ordered.
  40. 6. Have more responses or answer choices than premises. For example, if there are 10 premises, there should be at least 11 answer choices. 7. Place all the premises and responses on a single page. 8. Indicate in the instruction that a response may be used once, more than once or not at all. 9. Avoid giving pattern in the answer.
  41. This is a sample of a matching type of test.
  42. Read the directions of the activity.
  43. Read the story, workshop, presentation of outputs.
  44. Read the directions of the activity.
