MASTHEAD AND MAIN IMAGE
On a front cover, there is a large MASTHEAD
which brands the magazine. It stands out to the
audience based on the incredibly larger text size
in contrast to the text size of cover lines. The
colour of the masthead also stands out from the
background in order to visually attract the
audiences’ attention.
The Masthead also tends to be behind the MAIN
IMAGE model in order to suggest that the
magazine is behind the model based on the
connotation of status; because the model has
been put in front/ first on the front cover, readers
can denote that the model is always put first in
society as they are of great power, therefore,
importance, hence why the magazine has decided
to publish a main story inside it abut this
particular artist/s.
The MAIN IMAGE tends to take up most of the space on screen, especially in the centre of the cover. This is to connote that
the model is of great importance, therefore, the attention of the audience is fully focused onto them. The direct eye-contact
into the camera makes it more intense, therefore, makes the audience embrace the emotions of the models (based on NVC)
and attracts them to read it as they feel like the model is looking at them to relate to them and makes the audience desire to
read on in order to understand why the models are using certain NVC.
COVER LINES
COVER LINES are used to present limited
information about content inside. The idea
of this is to make the audience want to read
on as they have been given limited
information, therefore, in order to fulfil their
satisfaction of understanding all information
and context behind a published story, they
are forced to buy and read the magazine.
The cover lines have a largely sized and
differed colour to the text below in order to
visually differentiate and indicate which ext
represents the title and which text represents
the content linked to the title (which can be
found inside).
DATELINE AND BARCODE
The DATELINE often presents
the month and week of
publication, including the issue
number. The month of
publication tends to be the date
when the magazine is distributed
and displayed on a news-stand or
on a commercial basis.
The BARCODE is placed either on
the left-third or the right-third of
the magazine cover in order to
minimize the attention of it on-screen.
It does tend to stand out
from the background so that it
can be spotted easily when being
sold.
SELLING LINE OR SLOGAN
The SELLING LINE OR SLOGAN
tends to be placed underneath the
masthead so that it can be
denoted as visually close to the
title, therefore, it acts as a
signifier that it links closely to the
brand (as though a representing
trademark for the audience to
associate with the brand easily).
MAIN COVER LINE
The MAIN COVER LINE is of a
larger size than other cover lines
in order to attract the most
attention of the audience and
stand out as the most important
cover line as it links to the main
story/ content inside of the
magazine (which tends to link to
the model).
LEFT THIRD
The LEFT THIRD is very
important for shops that sell
issues on a commercial basis
because they have many
magazines which don’t show full-frontage,
therefore, for people to
select the magazine they desire,
the title must be shown easily, so
that it can be identified and
displayed easily when placed with
many more magazine issues or a
separate genre.
There is also a PUFF and PUG which tend to be either near the top of the cover
page or the side of the cover page, in order to immediately identify an eye-catching
source of information, whether a promotional offer (to attract the
audience) or whether based on internal content.
Double page spread
The model on the cover page will always be in the double-page spread
as the entire two pages relate to them (based on an interview or
recent story that the magazine has an interest to publish).
There are many pool-quotes which reflects on what the model has
said, mainly consisting of the most memorable quotes which the
audience are interested in understanding (due to recent events
which the quotes are linked to). There are also long paragraphs of
interview answers, sectioned off by the questions in a varied colour
(to stand out as a title easily).

The Model tends to have a photo which takes up at least one page of the double-page spread. This is in order to focus the
audience’s attention on them as though they are the most important person in the magazine due to such large space being
devoted to them.
The title with the model’s name is also very large and stands out from the background based on colour in order to present
immediately, who the interview is based on.

Conventions of magazines

  • 1. Conventions of a magazine front cover and double page spread By Alessio Petulla`
  • 2. Front cover MASTHEAD COVER LINES SELLING LINE OR SLOGAN MAIN COVER LINE BARCODE MAIN IMAGE (of a model, specifically, a singer) DATELINE Left third Right third
  • 3. MASTHEAD AND MAIN IMAGE On a front cover, there is a large MASTHEAD which brands the magazine. It stands out to the audience based on the incredibly larger text size in contrast to the text size of cover lines. The colour of the masthead also stands out from the background in order to visually attract the audiences’ attention. The Masthead also tends to be behind the MAIN IMAGE model in order to suggest that the magazine is behind the model based on the connotation of status; because the model has been put in front/ first on the front cover, readers can denote that the model is always put first in society as they are of great power, therefore, importance, hence why the magazine has decided to publish a main story inside it abut this particular artist/s. The MAIN IMAGE tends to take up most of the space on screen, especially in the centre of the cover. This is to connote that the model is of great importance, therefore, the attention of the audience is fully focused onto them. The direct eye-contact into the camera makes it more intense, therefore, makes the audience embrace the emotions of the models (based on NVC) and attracts them to read it as they feel like the model is looking at them to relate to them and makes the audience desire to read on in order to understand why the models are using certain NVC.
  • 4. COVER LINES COVER LINES are used to present limited information about content inside. The idea of this is to make the audience want to read on as they have been given limited information, therefore, in order to fulfil their satisfaction of understanding all information and context behind a published story, they are forced to buy and read the magazine. The cover lines have a largely sized and differed colour to the text below in order to visually differentiate and indicate which ext represents the title and which text represents the content linked to the title (which can be found inside).
  • 5. DATELINE AND BARCODE The DATELINE often presents the month and week of publication, including the issue number. The month of publication tends to be the date when the magazine is distributed and displayed on a news-stand or on a commercial basis. The BARCODE is placed either on the left-third or the right-third of the magazine cover in order to minimize the attention of it on-screen. It does tend to stand out from the background so that it can be spotted easily when being sold.
  • 6. SELLING LINE OR SLOGAN The SELLING LINE OR SLOGAN tends to be placed underneath the masthead so that it can be denoted as visually close to the title, therefore, it acts as a signifier that it links closely to the brand (as though a representing trademark for the audience to associate with the brand easily).

  • 8. LEFT THIRD The LEFT THIRD is very important for shops that sell issues on a commercial basis because they have many magazines which don’t show full-frontage, therefore, for people to select the magazine they desire, the title must be shown easily, so that it can be identified and displayed easily when placed with many more magazine issues or a separate genre. There is also a PUFF and PUG which tend to be either near the top of the cover page or the side of the cover page, in order to immediately identify an eye-catching source of information, whether a promotional offer (to attract the audience) or whether based on internal content.
