Accounting Theory
Assignment Task
The four largest Australian Banks have faced considerable pressure from the community and the
government in recent times. This pressure has arisen due to their interest rate increases in association
with their high reported earnings. As accountants, we are responsible for preparing financial
statements and calculating the profit figures.
In your opinion, do you think the big banks are managing their reported earnings to show lesser profits
than what they are actually earning (i.e. using earnings management techniques)? You are required,
and must, read and incorporate academic journal articles and other relevant materials to justify your
viewpoint. INTRODUCTION
Accounting can be broadly defined as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In order to do so, it is necessary to understand and define earnings Management.
Definition of Earnings Management
Healy and Wahlen (1999) define earnings management as:
Earnings management occurs when managers use judgement in financial reporting and in structuring
transactions to alter financial reports to either mislead some stakeholders about the underlying
economic performance of the company or to influence contractual outcomes that depend on reported
accounting numbers.
Another definition is given by Fields et al. (2001) who state that:
Earnings management occurs when managers exercise their discretion over accounting numbers with
or without restrictions. Such discretion can be either firm value maximizing or opportunistic .
The above definitions highlight the point that managerial intent is a criterion for earnings management
(Spohr 2005). Several academic literatures seek to point out the activities which can be considered to
be earnings management. However, as the definition of earnings management does not rely on any
one item of the income statement, it does not need to be directly connected to reported earnings. Its
impact is through accounting numbers and may also be directed at financial ratios as opposed to
earnings (Schipper 1989). Dechow and Skinner (2000) have classified earnings management as
follows:
Reporting Type Accounting choices
Within GAAP
Conservative Accounting Overly aggressive recognition of provisions or reserves

Reflection Paper On Reading Skills
From working with Joe for the past few weeks, I noticed there were a few different reading skills that
he could use some practice with. One of the first things I noticed while working with Joe was his
fluency while reading. During the running records I had done with Joe, I was able to listen to his
reading pace, and noticed that he only took pauses when he needed to take a breath. I also noticed that
he used no expression while reading; not even when there was quotation marks present. Another
reading skill that Joe lacked was good use of a decoding strategy. When Joe was presented with a
word he didn t know, he would use picture cues, but when that didn t work, or when illustrations were
minimal, Joe would simply skip over the word. When I asked Joe what he liked to do when he came
across a word he didn t know he said, I don t know . I got a similar answer when I asked him if he
knew what his teacher, and friends did when they came across a word they didn t know. This
observation showed me that Joe could really benefit from having a decoding strategy presented to him
in a minilesson. On the first day of co teaching; my partner and I focused on teaching a decoding
strategy, so we could practice that strategy if needed while doing a fluency exercise the next time we
met. Taberski mentions how working with words, and decoding strategy will help students move from
hesitancy to fluency (pg 87). Both Alexa and I thought that our learning partners could benefit from

The God Of Small Things And Chemmeen
What makes people who they are? From a young age, cultural rules that outline the expectations of a
person in their society are instilled in a person s mind . They are molded by their fundamental role in
their society and continually adhere to that role throughout their lives. They can t over cross those
boundaries. The different roles assigned to a person by society influences their identity through their
life. The characters of The God of small things and Chemmeen are an example of how breaking these
cultural values can go well, as well as disastrously. The characters Ammu, Velutha, and Karuthamma
struggle to follow these societal codes of their community and this undoubtedly leads to their demise.
For my paper, I will display to you how one s community can influence one s occupation, social
graces, relationships, and all in all, their whole lives. In The God of small things Ammu is from a
village called Ayemenem. She is the daughter of Pappachi and Mammachi and the sister of Chacko.
Chacko, being the son of the family, and the future man of the house was allowed to go far to get an
education, while Ammu was left with her abusive and drunkard father. Her father believed that a
college education was an unnecessary expense for a girl. (Roy). Ammu became desperate to leave the
nest so she wanted to find a husband and get married quickly. She had the thought of using it as an
escape from Ayemenem, her father, and her life. She soon meets and becomes a bride to Babu,

Beethoven 5th Symphony Analysis
INTRODUCTION
My composer is Ludwig Van Beethoven who was a German composer and pianist. Beethoven lived
during the transition from the Classical era to the Romantic era. He was a primary leader in the
transition between the two eras. During his life the Encyclopedia Britannica was released. The
American Revolution started and the US signed the Declaration of Independence. The Rosetta Stone
was found in Egypt and the US declared war on Great Britain.
EARLY LIFE
Beethoven was born on December 16, 1770 in Bonn Germany. Throughout his childhood his father
was a heavy drinker and beat him into practicing music. His father even locked Beethoven in the
cellar and deprived him of sleep just to get a couple more hours of practice. His first recital call little

How Is The Patriot Historically Accurate
The Patriot Movie is a good movie that is an emotional that explains how the American Revolutionary
War and how things were done. The Patriot is a 2000 American historical fiction war film directed by
Roland Emmerich, written by Robert Rodat, and starring Mel Gibson, Chris Cooper and Heath
Ledger. The film takes place during the real life events of the Southern theater of the American
Revolutionary War. In the summer of 1781, after six years of war, the American Army was struggling.
The British occupied New York City. The movie The Patriot is somewhat historically accurate. In The
Patriot Movie Benjamin Martin a veteran of the French and Indian War and widower with seven
children is called to Charleston to vote in the South Carolina General. In the movie Benjamin does
what he can to avoid fighting in the Revolutionary War. When his oldest son Gabriel joins the Patriots
and his second born son Thomas is killed, he takes it upon himself to join and fight with the colonial
militia. He is nicknamed The Ghost by the British. In the movie Mel Gibson plays Benjamin in the

Political Corruption In Cuba Essay
Cuba is a communist nation still present from the cold war era when Russia and Cuba had ties
together. The government in Cuba is very corrupt and the officials take bribes from other officials or
regular citizens in Cuba. Political corruption in Cuba is a very big issues. hI believe that all
government is corrupt in some way, but it seems like Communist nations are more corrupt than
capitalist nations like the U.S The Cuban government avoids taking action on big issues due to bribes
from people who don t want to see any change in Cuba. The people who are bribing these officials are

Political corruption in Cuba can mainly be blamed on the drug trade in and out of Cuba. The drug

In The Air Between Us By Claude M. Steele
Stereotype threat is a perception of fear that a person experiences in circumstances when they feel
they may inadvertently confirm a negative stereotype of a social group in which they are a part of. The
powerful effect of stereotype threat has been explored to determine the root of the issue, who is most
susceptible and what can be done to lessen the negative impacts it imparts on victims. The essay In the
Air between Us by Claude M. Steele examines the dynamic pressure stereotype threat places
specifically on African American students in a collegiate academic setting. This essay uses compelling
case studies to examine the everyday impact of this phenomenon, while searching for solutions to
diminish its effect. I will prove through use of Steele s essay, additional case ... Show more content on

Steele focuses her argument around high achieving, motivated black student s underachievement
rooted in stereotype threat. She argues that students that are of equal intelligent level underperform
due to subtle but powerful impacts of stereotypes, and that colleges can lessen these impacts by
addressing the issue through creation of identity safety and diminishing of racial divides. This point is
strongly proven through the study conducted by Woolf et al. (2008) where minority students
underachieve in medical school due to decreased teacher interactions rooted in student classifications.
If a safe identity space were created in this institution the classifications and ultimately racial divide
would be nullified, leading to equal relationships amongst all students and teachers and ultimately
opportunity for equal performance. Upon examination of Steele s essay and other case studies,
stereotype threats biggest disadvantage lies in ultimate creation of unequal opportunities and testing

Strategic Change in Government Based on Organization...
Strategic Change in Government Based on Organization Hierarchy
The literature supports the position that there should be a relationship between the structure and
organization change. This study was undertaken to determine how different organization roles,
hierarchy, and sizes affect planned strategic change. A survey instrument was administered to top
federal government agency leadership to assess change in their organization. The intention is to draw
common relationships between organization change and specific categories or sizes of organizations.
Role of Change
Business strategy and structure have always been related. Organizational change involves innovation,
process improvement, and organizational redesign (Galbraith ... Show more content on

Nutt and Backoff, (1992, p. 112) explain that some types of public organizations that can control
change and other types that cannot easily control change. Professional agencies such as the IRS and
FBI have considerable prerogative to act in a prescribed arena and have a protected budget. Political
agencies, such as the State Department, have high control over their actions and may have legislation
to protect it. Thus, change may be in the hands of parties outside of the agency.
In examining change, Lewin identified three phases of the change process unfreezing, changing, and
refreezing. This involves getting people ready for the change, providing new patterns of behavior,
integrating the behavior into the individual permanently.
Tushman and Romanelli (1985) noted that only executive leadership has the position and potential to
initiate and implement strategic change . There are four levels of change in people: knowledge,
attitude, behavioral, organizational change (Hersey and Blancherd, 1993). This research focuses on the
organizational or group performance changes.
Change in Organizations
Organizational change is considered to be the adoption of a new idea or behavior by an organization
(Pierce and Delbecq, 1977). The Amburgey and Dacin (1994) study found that strategic and structural
changes occurring throughout the history of a firm affect the rates of

The Basic Foundation Of Classical Realism
The basic foundation of classical realism originally laid out in Thucydides s History of the
Peloponnesian War no longer holds true due to a changing international dynamic that gives small
states and non state actors the ability to control their own actions and exert great influence on large
states and control their own actions. The pivotal concept, the strong do what they can and the weak
suffer what they must, doesn t apply in the 21st century international sphere. This paper will explain
the essential tenets of Thucydides s balance of power theory especially those found in the Melian
Dialogue. Furthermore, the paper will isolate examples of the failure of his system to apply to
contemporary issues including international trade and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Athenians wipe out much of the Melian population and takes control of the island. While a
necessarily bleak outlook, Thucydides argues that weak states must submit to strong states. This
argument is persuasive in the context of this war and many other conflicts throughout history, but in
the past few decades, a combination of factors has diluted the ability of powerful states to dictate the
terms for weaker states. The globalization of international trade through the WTO and free trade
agreements has largely nullified America s power advantage and disproves the ability of balance of
power politics to explain the international system. America currently has numerous, significant trade
deficits with countries such as Mexico and China. While it can be argued that free trade helps the
American consumer, it is undeniable that these deficits diminish the power that each country holds. In
the case of Mexico, a much weaker power, the United States loses jobs and manufacturing to that
country because of NAFTA and the WTO. In a classical realist world, America would be able to
dictate the terms of trade that would benefit American workers and American economic prosperity.
However, liberal trade institutions put all countries on the same playing field regardless of their
military might. China is

A Consensus On International Climate Change Policy
One of the greatest threats to humankind present in the 21st century is climate change. Human
behavior, especially since industrial revolution led over 600 thousand tons of carbon to be emitted into
the atmosphere from fossil fuels which thus enhanced greenhouse affects, and alters the natural cycle
of global warming and cooling. The consequence of such alteration has devastating effects globally as
drastic temperature increases experienced in the recent years are causing widespread damages . Effects
of climate change not only helps deteriorate the biome as quarter of all species could be pushed to
extinction by 2050 , but also poses a large threat to living conditions and challenges existing patterns
of energy use and security Given that climate change is one of the most pressing issues experienced in
the modern era there has been little progress in the United Nations (UN) led climate negotiations . The
reason as to why states cannot come to a consensus on international climate change policy is because
states reside in an anarchic international system in which states are by nature: conflictual, self
interested and focused on attaining relative gain as shown through neo realist theory. In ability for
states to negotiate a climate change action plan will be shown through states pursuit of relative gains
in the Kyoto Protocol, the role of economic growth in terms of relative gains, and climate change lag/
state s personal agendas, which have led to numerous

Within The Blues
James Baldwin s Sonny s Blues is a story of how a distant and conflicting relationship between two
brothers is saved by the powerful message within music. In Sonny s Blues the music portrays a very
powerful message. The story begins with Sonny being arrested for heroin use. Sonny s older brother is
a school teacher and did not want to believe that the news was true, I didn t want to believe that I d
ever see my brother going down, coming to nothing, all that light in his face gone out, in the condition
I d already seen so many others (Baldwin 293). Sonny used his music and drugs to distance himself
from all the negativity in his life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Although Sonny s addiction to drugs and love for music seemed similar because he used both to
escape reality, they were inevitably more different. The empowerment Sonny got from drugs was
nothing but an illusion, unlike the strength he gained from music. Sonny s Blues illustrates the ability
to stay sane through the power of music. Sonny s father died when he was fifteen and sadly He and
Sonny hadn t ever got on too well. And this was partly because Sonny was the apple of his father eye.
It was because he love Sonny so much and was frightened for him, that he was always fighting with
him (Baldwin 298). Sonny lost both his parents at a young age, which left him with his older brother
as his only family. Sonny s brother leaves for the army and ...already decided that he d have to move
in with Isabel and her folks (Baldwin 302). Sonny was not in favor of the arrangement but he really
did not have much of a choice. Sonny s brother cheered him up by saying, They got a piano at Isabel
s. You can practice on it (Baldwin 303). Sonny stayed with Isabel and her folks, who tolerated him out
of respect for his brother. Sonny s loneliness caused him to seclude himself from everyone around
him. Sonny used music to overcome the loneliness he felt. The music was how Sonny adapted to the
new unfamiliar environment. Sonny played the piano every day until supper time. His brother says

people from each district, one boy and one girl, to compete in the games. All of the people chosen

Many games are in fact built like a hierarchy where there is a group of people that are more superior
than the others. Everyone strives to be the best they can be, but there is always a few elite that are
believed to be the best. The ones considered to be the elite are destined to advance, or to win. Cato and
his allies are considered at the top of the pyramid, because District 2 has won The Hunger Games
many times in the past. Cato was the one to be feared and he came to the games very confident.
Katniss was also a force to be reckoned with, and the scene where she is up in the tree shows that
Katniss is a stronger opponent. Katniss climbs up the tree and Cato tries to follow her up but he slips
and falls out the tree, thus why they camp out for her. The camera angles also showed us this. The

The United States Constitution is a healthy document which still serves our nation exceptionally well
and does not need drastic change or revision. Since June twenty first of 1788, when the United States
Constitution was ratified in Washington D.C. it has been considered The Law of the Land. Ever since
that date, we have followed those rules as the Federal law and overall ruling of our lives. For almost
two hundred twenty four years, this has been what our country has been following to this day. The

The Pros And Cons Of The Woolly Mammoth
Biology Issues Investigations: Should we bring back the woolly mammoth from extinction? Or should
we not tamper with the past and leave things how they are?
Why do humans go to such extents to protect endangered species? The same questioning applies to
species brought back from extinction; it is to preserve biodiversity, to restore deserted and destroyed
ecosystems, to advance the science of preventing extinctions, and to undo harm that humans have
caused in the past.
Additionally, the prospect of resurrection is profound news. That something as irreversible and final as
extinction might be reversed is an astonishing realization. The imagination spirals does it not? Just the
thought of mammoths wandering the alive the wilderness again invokes the awe and wonder that
drives all conservation at its deepest level.
Woolly Mammoths were the dominant herbivore of the mammoth steppe in the far north, once the
largest biomes on Earth. In their absence, the grasslands they helped sustain were replaced by species
poor tundra and boreal forest. Their return to the north would bring back carbon fixing grass and

However in Rietveld refinement the peaks profile is fitted using Pseudo Voight functions, which is
linear combination of Gaussian and Lorentzian functions. The internal strain (ε) may arise from the
chemical reaction involved in the growth process of ZnO films and having negligible effect on peak
broadening. The microstructural (crystallite size and lattice strain) and structural (lattice cell constants,
atomic positions and occupancies) parameters refinement was performed using the space group
P63mc. The values of the crystallite size, strain, and lattice parameter obtained from the Rietveld
refinement and Scherrer methods are shown in Table 1. In table 1 the microstructural analysis shows
the lattice parameters are well matched lattice constants for the standard values of the hexagonal
wurtzite structure of ZnO. Furthermore, the variation of single to five layer coated ZnO film lattice
parameters a and c is remarkable, when compared with the standard ZnO, due to the complexity of the
hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure of ZnO and anisotropic variation in the crystal lattice. As seen in
Table 1, the ratio of the lattice parameters a/c is slightly affected by deposition cycles. However, the
unit cell volume of as prepared ZnO film is decreased from 47.598 to 47.501 Å3 with increasing the
deposition cycle from single to five cycles. The similar performance was observed for the Zn O bond
length (l) which decreases from 2.09 to 2.03A with increasing

Classical Gender Representation:
In Classical Hollywood the representation of women is certainly quite clear cut, our main two
definable types being that of the virgin and that of the whore. Our virgin represents the patriarchal
ideals of family within which at the time a woman should represent innocence, purity and certainly
deference to the male. Our whore figure shows contempt for family values through promiscuity or
perceived selfishness. This woman will often be a lot more influential then a virgin figure. Our whore
will inevitably be neutralised during the course of the film often through imprisonment or death. The
classic often revisited scene of a man grasping a woman by the upper arms is a good visual metaphor
for the dominance of man in classical Hollywood. Another good visual metaphor is that of the male
gaze. Very often we will see a point of view shot from the male perspective and we see that the object
of his gaze is a beautifully lit woman. She will not return his gaze as this would be a show of equality.
This representation of gender is consistent through all classical genres for example we have our
Femme Fatale in Noir and in westerns we have literal whores. Westerns also have what is known as
the tart with a heart which is a female living by questionable morals but often for reason of necessity.
She will also always be neutralised.

Multi-Generational Workforce
Today s working environment has experienced a major transformation over the last decade,
particularly in terms of population diversity in the workforce. There are currently four main
generations dominating the workforce, they are made up of Silents, Baby Boomers, Generation X and
Generation Y. It is expected that in the coming decades there will be further changes with emergence
of newer generations, and slower removal of older generations from organizations as pension age
increases. Understanding differences between the generations, and learning to adapt their management
practices is critical to building a successful multigenerational workplace. I would like farther explain
each generation s attributes and their effects on the workforce. ... Show more content on

A report published by Adecco on workplace revolution outlined Gen Y s work ethics and behaviors.
According to the report, they enjoy a work life balance, akin to Gen X, and prefer to work with bright
and creative people. They are participative as opposed to directive, enjoy multi tasking and are goal
oriented. They are also considered the most educated and self aware generation in employment.
According to an Ernest Young report on the rise of young managers in the workplace, this generation
were not considered to be team players and have an attitude of entitlement. This was also noted by
Jean Twenge in her book Generation me. In terms of management, they are considered inclusive
leaders and enjoy diversification and input when making decisions. The future generation of workers,
according to Amy Glass, are referred to as generation Z. Generation Z are those born approximately
after 1995 and are even more reliant on new technology and in particular communication
technologies. There is little knowledge yet of this generation in terms of attitude and characteristics in
the workplace given that the eldest of this generation are now coming into their late teens. In the next
decade however, we can expect to see this generation joining the workforce. The Next Generation of
Workers written by Lily Guthrie of The Ken Blanchard Companies, Office of the Future, highlights

Is Leavitt A Living Thing
I think the point Leavitt is making is how life is a very complicated subject to try to understand. There
may not ever be a true definition to the word life . Like Leavitt said, One could always find
exceptions. There is still no true distinction from living and nonliving things. Yes, all living things are
supposed to possess the traits of being able to reproduce, maintain homeostasis, take in a form of
energy whether it s through direct food intake, or from sunlight, and so on and so forth. However,
sometimes one thing that we may consider a living thing might not contain all of these traits. One
example is a virus. Some people say it s alive others say it s not. It can respond to stimuli, has DNA to
pass to offspring, and other simple

Becoming A Driverless Car
Intro
Three years ago, Nissan came out as the first car manufacturer to announce that their driverless
vehicles would be ready for consumer adoption in 2020. This was good for the future of the car
industry because it promoted awareness for this new emerging technology.
In September of 2015, Chinese bus manufacturer Yutong announced its self driving car which had
successfully handled 26 traffic signals, several lane changes, and at least one passing maneuver during
a 20 mile drive from Zhengzhou and Kaifeng. The company hasn t revealed much, but they say the
bus used laser, radar, and camera systems on both sides of the vehicle. The autopilot system has a

He responded saying, There s times when I might be in a taxi and I might be anxious because I m late

driverless car] where you re on your phone or reading your book or talking to a loved one instead [of
being anxious]. So the priority moves to your interaction in life from how you re lane changing on the
freeway. I guess if you can make that time in the vehicle more meaningful and useful, maybe you don
t worry as much time about the time you re spending in it.
With driverless cars, time spent in a car will be more meaningful and people will be less likely to drive
in an aggressive manner and lash out at other drivers. Self driving cars might even have a therapeutic

Horton Vs. California Case Essay
DuPont1 Dylan DuPont 10/22/16 CJA 356 criminal evidence Week 4 final paper Horton vs. California
On June 4th, 1990, Terry Brice Horton vs. California was a United States Supreme Court case in
which the Court held 7 2 that the Fourth Amendment does not prohibit warrantless seizure of
evidence, which is granted due to the plain view doctrine. The discovery of the evidence does not have
to be inadvertent, although that is a characteristic of most legitimate plain view seizures. The victim
was Erwin Wallaker he was robbed of jewelry and cash, in his own garage by two men, one armed
with a machine gun and one with a stun gun. Wallaker heard enough of the robber s conversation to
identify Horton s voice. His identification was partially corroborated by a witness who saw the
robbers leaving the scene and by evidence that Horton had attended a coin show. Sergeant LaRault
determined there was enough evidence to search Horton s home, and obtained a warrant to do so. His
affidavit for the search warrant described both the weapons and the proceeds of the robbery, but the
warrant only granted permission to look for the stolen property. While searching Horton s house,
Sergeant LaRault did not find the property, but he did find an Uzi machine gun, a .38 caliber revolver,
two stun guns, and a handcuff key, along with other items linking Horton to the crime. The evidence
was admitted into the trial, and Horton was found guilty of armed robbery. Horton Argued that the

Acetaminophen Is A Common Pain Reliever And Fever Reducer...
Acetaminophen is a common pain reliever and fever reducer used to treat conditions such as head,
muscle or toothache, as well as colds, fevers, and even arthritis. It is available in a many tablet form to
be ingested. These tablets are manufactured by a large variety of pharmaceutical manufactures
including a great deal of generic brand companies. These tablets all have the same active ingredient in
acetaminophen, yet each hold different inactive ingredients that can impact the overall performance of
the drug. These inactive ingredients affect the overall chemical stability of the tablets and can lead to a
faster decrease in potency of the acetaminophen tablet over time making the tablet less viable of an
option to treat common aches and pains. Storage outside the range of the recommended temperature
could greatly increase this rate of degradation.
This is an important experiment for what it means to NASA and the International Space Station, as it
will allow them to more accurately understand whether acetaminophen is a viable drug that should be
taken onto the International Space Station and on other missions, possibly missions related to Mars,
where conditions are not ideal. Additionally, this research would allow NASA to determine if it would
be safe for their astronauts to take acetaminophen past the expiration date or if the expiration date
even matters, given the conditions that they were stored, and for how long. Also, it would help NASA

Expressionism In Edvard Munch s The Scream
Looking like a scene out of a horror movie, The Scream is one of the most famous Expressionist
paintings in the world. During the end of the nineteenth century, Expressionism arose as an art
movement, wherein poets and artists began to use their works to express their inner feelings and
emotions (Wolf). One of the influential expressionists at that period was Edvard Munch, who was a
Norwegian artist and who painted The Scream in four distinct versions, from tempera to pastel to
crayon (Shabi). After this painting was released, it immediately caught people s attention because
Munch used exaggerated colors and simple shapes, which was not common at that time, to portray the
skull like faced individual and the landscape. In addition, the painting provoked questions regarding
the inspiration of Munch because the great masses were curious to know the hidden messages behind
the painting. Therefore, if the audiences examine The Scream closely, they will notice Munch had
utilized various art techniques to demonstrate his painting as a form of therapy that can appeal to the
audiences emotions, logic, and sense of credibility. Munch used many straight and curved lines to
make appeals to the audiences emotions in his painting. With the use of different lines, Munch has
successfully moved his audiences attention to the skull like faced individual. In his painting, the sex of
the skull like faced individual is vague because one cannot determine based on his or her appearance

India
Abstract
Surface roughness has become the most significant functional requirement and it is an index of the
product quality. In order to increase the efficiency of hard to machine alloys like titanium and nickel
alloys, an Electro Chemical Honing (ECH) process has been employed to achieve highest material
removal rate with the best surface qualities. This extended abstract describes the design and
fabrication of an indigenously developed tooling setup for ECH of external cylindrical surfaces of
Titanium alloys (TI 6AL 4V) and also highlights the key process parameters and their affect on ECH
process. The influence of the machining parameters on the surface finish has been investigated and
optimized the process parameters for improving the surface roughness is also evaluated. Percentage
improvements in surface roughness values Ra and other parameters like electrolyte temperature,
composition and concentration were studied while changing the processing time (PT). And also the
study of surface characteristics of micro and macro level and micro hardness too examined.

Theme Of Guilt In Atonement
Both writers of the books Atonement and The Remains of The Day investigate the manners by which
the characters are responsible for enabling their imagination to dominate their perception of reality.
This then brings severe consequences that shape the rest of their stories throughout the novels. Regret
and guilt are depicted throughout both novels by the successful utilization of dialect that is used in the
books in the portrayal of emotions, or lack of, which also showed the tension between the characters.

Social Problems Of Social Class
Social classes are categories individuals are put into based on income, lifestyles, opportunities, job
occupations, behaviors, and attitudes. Virtually all societies have a class system, and America is no
exception. To prevent mixing of class systems Class boundaries are maintained by limiting social
interaction, intermarriage, and mobility into another class (Tischler, 2014, P.181). How many social
classes exist in American society is debatable, however many believe that there is only five. The five
American social classes are upper class, upper middle class, middle middle class, lower middle class,
and lower class. The first class is the upper class, which consist of wealthy individuals who maintain
an exclusive lavish lifestyle. This class has a great influence on the majority of society s primary
political and economic structures. Those in the upper class like to be separate from other classes, and
do this by having, and belonging to prestigious private schools and clubs. The upper class is relatively
small, It is estimated that in the United States, the upper class consist of from 1 to 3 percent of the
population (Tischler, 2014, P.181). Modern day people of the upper class can be represented by
entrepreneurs, such as William Gates, Warren Buffet, Mark Zuckerberg, or Larry Ellison. The next
class is the upper middle class, people in this class are usually successful professional and business

Similarities Between The United States And The Federal System
The United States Federal System and the current Federal System for the European Union have many

Hip Hop Music Mirrors All Urban Society
Hip Hop Music Mirrors All Urban Society
From 1950 to the late 1980 s, social conflicts all over the world encouraged the success of Hip Hop
due its ability to mirror the negative and positive aspects of society, and in doing this, the concept of
Hip Hop s real lyrics were very easily translated and adopted overseas. To understand Hip Hop s
ability to migrate around the world, it must be understood what Hip Hop was created out of. First,
American Urban society, from the Civil Rights Era until now has matured, creating Hip Hop s lyrics in
both its negative recap of the destruction of South Bronx and the new AIDS epidemic and positive

1.1.1 What are fingerprints?
Fingerprints are characterised by their individual detailing and patterns. They are formed and
individualized during the growth of the foetus in the womb, the process in which this happens is
unclear, however it is clear that once the fingerprints have matured they stay the same throughout a
person s life, they do not alter unless the person has an incident resulting in a permanent scar, this scar
will then still appear in the fingerprint as the skin sheds and regenerates. Fingerprints are left behind
when the pad of the finger comes into contact with different surfaces. The details left behind are
caused by secretions of sweat from the eccrine glands ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Patent fingerprints also known as visible fingerprints, they are fingerprints that visible to the human
eye with no need for development techniques. They are usually found in fluids such as blood or ink
and on surfaces like glass and door frames.
Plastic fingerprints are those which are impressed within a soft material or tissue after being pressed
into the material.
Full fingerprints are the fingerprints that are found which have the whole are of the fingerprint. Partial
fingerprints are just that, they are found and only part of the fingerprint is present. 1.1.4 Fingerprints
found at crime scenes 1.1.4.1 Identification
When a fingerprint is found a crime scene, it needs to be recovered in order for it to be matched and
identified as belonging to a specific person. However having just one fingerprint from a crime scene is
not enough to match it to one person, there needs to be a fingerprint to compare it to. There will need
to be the fingerprint recovered from the crime scene and a reference fingerprint, usually taken from a
suspect. They will then be compared to one another, during this comparison fingerprints are examined
for three levels of details. Level one detailing is the pattern (loop, whorl, arch), the pattern itself
cannot be used to match the fingerprints, though it can be used to exclude a specific person of interest
if the patterns are not the same. The second level of detailing looked for is the minutiae detailing and

The Use Of The Sit-In Movement In The Civil Rights Movement
The sit in movement acted as a major protest and turning point for the Civil Rights Movement. The sit
ins highlighted the main moral issue that was being fought: racial discrimination and segregation.
Blacks utilized the strategies of nonviolence and student involvement in order to combat the moral
issue of racial segregation ( Ain t Scared of Your Jails ). The appeal for human rights through the use
of nonviolence was an important strategy utilized by blacks during the Civil Rights movement and in
particular the sit in movement. The students who initiated the sit ins were heavily trained on non
violence tactics ( Ain t Scared of Your Jails ). These tactics were often taught through workshops on
nonviolence that taught them how to take the blows and respond with a sense of dignity (Vivian, Ain t
Scared of Your Jails ). Such training was useful, as whites often responded with violence. While
protesters were sitting at the counter, they found themselves attacked by whites, while the police did
nothing to protect them ( Ain t Scared of Your Jails ). Likewise, the residence of Z. Alexander Looby
was bombed ( Ain t Scared of Your Jails ). However, the violence perpetrated by whites was only used
against them as blacks intended to whip the enemy with something that he doesn t understand : that
something being peaceful resistance (McCain, 116). This peaceful resistance was crucial for the
success of the movement, as nonviolence nurture[d] the atmosphere in which

Essay on 1 Kings
1 Kings
Introduction In 1 Kings 18 19 we are introduced to one of the most magical men in the Bible, and to
one of the greatest miracles. Along with Moses and Jesus, Elijah is among the great miracle workers
of the world. Elijah used miracles to bring Israel up out of shambles, if just for a moment. He also
showed extreme faith and perseverance in the face of great odds. But the true character of Elijah lies
in his name, which literally means, Yahweh is my God (Anderson 246).
Prelude to The Contest
In order to understand chapters 18 and 19 of 1 Kings, one must get some background on its main
character. In 1 Kings 17, we are first introduced to Elijah. At the time, Israel is at one of its lowest
points. King Ahab and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Elijah tells Obadiah to go to Ahab and tell him that he wants to meet with him. When the meeting
occurs, Ahab refers to Elijah as the troubler of Israel (1 Kings 18:17). Elijah responds by saying that
Israel has brought the trouble upon themselves by worshiping Baal. This is the first statement of the
reason that Elijah has been sent on this mission. Ahab is then instructed to gather all of his people and
the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:19).
It is at this point that we come to one of the most dramatic events in the entire Old Testament. One
man, Elijah, challenges the most powerful king in the land and his prophets to a contest of faith. He
declares that the worshipers of Baal will cut a bull into pieces and set it upon the altar of Baal. As the
lone representative of Yahweh, Elijah will then cut up a bull and set it upon the altar of Yahweh. The
prophets are then to call upon Baal to strike the altar with fire. Elijah will then call upon Yahweh to
strike his altar with fire. The true god could then be determined.
The prophets do as instructed and call upon Baal to ignite their altar. They call out and dance, but
nothing happened. All the while Elijah is taunting them, asking them why Baal is not responding. The
failure of Baal to react is made even more dramatic when one recognizes the fact that Baal is the
supposed god of weather,

Pros Of A Conscientious Objector
In this essay I will talk a little bit about conscientious objector. First of all what is a conscientious
object? Well a conscientious objector where the eligible men who opposed to serve in war because it
was against their deeply held moral or religious belief.
The first thing a person can think and ask is why they didn t want to serve in war and help their
country. There were many reasons some of them are for example religion and moral values. Men didn
t want to carry a weapon and kill people, some came to their beliefs on historic peace church. Actually
the ones from religion where more on consideration because of their beliefs, but the ones that didn t
want to go were punished.
Government has two main classification for conscientious ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He said that another alternative can be JUSTICE. Ali became a prominent speaker at college campuses
across the U.S., as the anti war movement grew in strength. He fought for his rights.
Every year, 15th May marks International Conscientious Objector day is a day to celebrate those who
have and those who continue to resist war, especially by refusing to be part of military structures.
As an opinion actually there was nothing wrong about refusing to join the army everyone has the right
to say aa simple no. it s understandable that in that period of time the military forced needed help
because they were having a rough time at war but they have to understand that men were scared and
that for them killing someone really meant something it wasn t as simple as that. It wasn t fair to
punish the conscientious objectors it wasn t fair to put them in jail or a death sentence. I appreciate
every men that refuse to kill because that means that they were good people. And those who served in
the army are good too but that doesn t mean they are better than the ones that didn t went to combat. I
really think that for them it wasn t an easy

  • 2. Accounting Theory Assignment Task The four largest Australian Banks have faced considerable pressure from the community and the government in recent times. This pressure has arisen due to their interest rate increases in association with their high reported earnings. As accountants, we are responsible for preparing financial statements and calculating the profit figures. In your opinion, do you think the big banks are managing their reported earnings to show lesser profits than what they are actually earning (i.e. using earnings management techniques)? You are required, and must, read and incorporate academic journal articles and other relevant materials to justify your viewpoint. INTRODUCTION Accounting can be broadly defined as the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to do so, it is necessary to understand and define earnings Management. Definition of Earnings Management Healy and Wahlen (1999) define earnings management as: Earnings management occurs when managers use judgement in financial reporting and in structuring transactions to alter financial reports to either mislead some stakeholders about the underlying economic performance of the company or to influence contractual outcomes that depend on reported accounting numbers. Another definition is given by Fields et al. (2001) who state that: Earnings management occurs when managers exercise their discretion over accounting numbers with or without restrictions. Such discretion can be either firm value maximizing or opportunistic . The above definitions highlight the point that managerial intent is a criterion for earnings management (Spohr 2005). Several academic literatures seek to point out the activities which can be considered to be earnings management. However, as the definition of earnings management does not rely on any one item of the income statement, it does not need to be directly connected to reported earnings. Its impact is through accounting numbers and may also be directed at financial ratios as opposed to earnings (Schipper 1989). • 3. Reflection Paper On Reading Skills From working with Joe for the past few weeks, I noticed there were a few different reading skills that he could use some practice with. One of the first things I noticed while working with Joe was his fluency while reading. During the running records I had done with Joe, I was able to listen to his reading pace, and noticed that he only took pauses when he needed to take a breath. I also noticed that he used no expression while reading; not even when there was quotation marks present. Another reading skill that Joe lacked was good use of a decoding strategy. When Joe was presented with a word he didn t know, he would use picture cues, but when that didn t work, or when illustrations were minimal, Joe would simply skip over the word. When I asked Joe what he liked to do when he came across a word he didn t know he said, I don t know . I got a similar answer when I asked him if he knew what his teacher, and friends did when they came across a word they didn t know. This observation showed me that Joe could really benefit from having a decoding strategy presented to him in a minilesson. On the first day of co teaching; my partner and I focused on teaching a decoding strategy, so we could practice that strategy if needed while doing a fluency exercise the next time we met. Taberski mentions how working with words, and decoding strategy will help students move from hesitancy to fluency (pg 87). • 4. The God Of Small Things And Chemmeen What makes people who they are? From a young age, cultural rules that outline the expectations of a person in their society are instilled in a person s mind . They are molded by their fundamental role in their society and continually adhere to that role throughout their lives. They can t over cross those boundaries. The different roles assigned to a person by society influences their identity through their life. The characters of The God of small things and Chemmeen are an example of how breaking these cultural values can go well, as well as disastrously. The characters Ammu, Velutha, and Karuthamma struggle to follow these societal codes of their community and this undoubtedly leads to their demise. For my paper, I will display to you how one s community can influence one s occupation, social graces, relationships, and all in all, their whole lives. In The God of small things Ammu is from a village called Ayemenem. She is the daughter of Pappachi and Mammachi and the sister of Chacko. Chacko, being the son of the family, and the future man of the house was allowed to go far to get an education, while Ammu was left with her abusive and drunkard father. Her father believed that a college education was an unnecessary expense for a girl. (Roy). Ammu became desperate to leave the nest so she wanted to find a husband and get married quickly. Steele Stereotype threat is a perception of fear that a person experiences in circumstances when they feel they may inadvertently confirm a negative stereotype of a social group in which they are a part of. The powerful effect of stereotype threat has been explored to determine the root of the issue, who is most susceptible and what can be done to lessen the negative impacts it imparts on victims. The essay In the Air between Us by Claude M. Steele examines the dynamic pressure stereotype threat places specifically on African American students in a collegiate academic setting. Steele focuses her argument around high achieving, motivated black student s underachievement rooted in stereotype threat. She argues that students that are of equal intelligent level underperform due to subtle but powerful impacts of stereotypes, and that colleges can lessen these impacts by addressing the issue through creation of identity safety and diminishing of racial divides. This point is strongly proven through the study conducted by Woolf et al. (2008) where minority students underachieve in medical school due to decreased teacher interactions rooted in student classifications. If a safe identity space were created in this institution the classifications and ultimately racial divide would be nullified, leading to equal relationships amongst all students and teachers and ultimately opportunity for equal performance. Political agencies, such as the State Department, have high control over their actions and may have legislation to protect it. Thus, change may be in the hands of parties outside of the agency. In examining change, Lewin identified three phases of the change process unfreezing, changing, and refreezing. This involves getting people ready for the change, providing new patterns of behavior, integrating the behavior into the individual permanently. The pivotal concept, the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must, doesn t apply in the 21st century international sphere. The Athenians wipe out much of the Melian population and takes control of the island. While a necessarily bleak outlook, Thucydides argues that weak states must submit to strong states. This argument is persuasive in the context of this war and many other conflicts throughout history, but in the past few decades, a combination of factors has diluted the ability of powerful states to dictate the terms for weaker states. The globalization of international trade through the WTO and free trade agreements has largely nullified America s power advantage and disproves the ability of balance of power politics to explain the international system. America currently has numerous, significant trade deficits with countries such as Mexico and China. While it can be argued that free trade helps the American consumer, it is undeniable that these deficits diminish the power that each country holds. In the case of Mexico, a much weaker power, the United States loses jobs and manufacturing to that country because of NAFTA and the WTO. • 11. A Consensus On International Climate Change Policy One of the greatest threats to humankind present in the 21st century is climate change. Human behavior, especially since industrial revolution led over 600 thousand tons of carbon to be emitted into the atmosphere from fossil fuels which thus enhanced greenhouse affects, and alters the natural cycle of global warming and cooling. The consequence of such alteration has devastating effects globally as drastic temperature increases experienced in the recent years are causing widespread damages . Effects of climate change not only helps deteriorate the biome as quarter of all species could be pushed to extinction by 2050 , but also poses a large threat to living conditions and challenges existing patterns of energy use and security Given that climate change is one of the most pressing issues experienced in the modern era there has been little progress in the United Nations (UN) led climate negotiations . The reason as to why states cannot come to a consensus on international climate change policy is because states reside in an anarchic international system in which states are by nature: conflictual, self interested and focused on attaining relative gain as shown through neo realist theory. Classical Gender Representation: In Classical Hollywood the representation of women is certainly quite clear cut, our main two definable types being that of the virgin and that of the whore. Our virgin represents the patriarchal ideals of family within which at the time a woman should represent innocence, purity and certainly deference to the male. Our whore figure shows contempt for family values through promiscuity or perceived selfishness. This woman will often be a lot more influential then a virgin figure. Our whore will inevitably be neutralised during the course of the film often through imprisonment or death. The classic often revisited scene of a man grasping a woman by the upper arms is a good visual metaphor for the dominance of man in classical Hollywood. Another good visual metaphor is that of the male gaze. Very often we will see a point of view shot from the male perspective and we see that the object of his gaze is a beautifully lit woman. She will not return his gaze as this would be a show of equality. This representation of gender is consistent through all classical genres for example we have our Femme Fatale in Noir and in westerns we have literal whores. Westerns also have what is known as the tart with a heart which is a female living by questionable morals but often for reason of necessity. She will also always be neutralised.

According to an Ernest Young report on the rise of young managers in the workplace, this generation were not considered to be team players and have an attitude of entitlement. Like Leavitt said, One could always find exceptions. There is still no true distinction from living and nonliving things. Yes, all living things are supposed to possess the traits of being able to reproduce, maintain homeostasis, take in a form of energy whether it s through direct food intake, or from sunlight, and so on and so forth. However, sometimes one thing that we may consider a living thing might not contain all of these traits. One example is a virus. Some people say it s alive others say it s not. California Case Essay DuPont1 Dylan DuPont 10/22/16 CJA 356 criminal evidence Week 4 final paper Horton vs. California On June 4th, 1990, Terry Brice Horton vs. California was a United States Supreme Court case in which the Court held 7 2 that the Fourth Amendment does not prohibit warrantless seizure of evidence, which is granted due to the plain view doctrine. The discovery of the evidence does not have to be inadvertent, although that is a characteristic of most legitimate plain view seizures. The victim was Erwin Wallaker he was robbed of jewelry and cash, in his own garage by two men, one armed with a machine gun and one with a stun gun. Wallaker heard enough of the robber s conversation to identify Horton s voice. His identification was partially corroborated by a witness who saw the robbers leaving the scene and by evidence that Horton had attended a coin show. Sergeant LaRault determined there was enough evidence to search Horton s home, and obtained a warrant to do so. His affidavit for the search warrant described both the weapons and the proceeds of the robbery, but the warrant only granted permission to look for the stolen property. While searching Horton s house, Sergeant LaRault did not find the property, but he did find an Uzi machine gun, a .38 caliber revolver, two stun guns, and a handcuff key, along with other items linking Horton to the crime. During the end of the nineteenth century, Expressionism arose as an art movement, wherein poets and artists began to use their works to express their inner feelings and emotions (Wolf). One of the influential expressionists at that period was Edvard Munch, who was a Norwegian artist and who painted The Scream in four distinct versions, from tempera to pastel to crayon (Shabi). After this painting was released, it immediately caught people s attention because Munch used exaggerated colors and simple shapes, which was not common at that time, to portray the skull like faced individual and the landscape. In addition, the painting provoked questions regarding the inspiration of Munch because the great masses were curious to know the hidden messages behind the painting. Therefore, if the audiences examine The Scream closely, they will notice Munch had utilized various art techniques to demonstrate his painting as a form of therapy that can appeal to the audiences emotions, logic, and sense of credibility. Munch used many straight and curved lines to make appeals to the audiences emotions in his painting. The appeal for human rights through the use of nonviolence was an important strategy utilized by blacks during the Civil Rights movement and in particular the sit in movement. This is the first statement of the reason that Elijah has been sent on this mission. Ahab is then instructed to gather all of his people and the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:19). It is at this point that we come to one of the most dramatic events in the entire Old Testament. One man, Elijah, challenges the most powerful king in the land and his prophets to a contest of faith. He declares that the worshipers of Baal will cut a bull into pieces and set it upon the altar of Baal. As the lone representative of Yahweh, Elijah will then cut up a bull and set it upon the altar of Yahweh. The prophets are then to call upon Baal to strike the altar with fire.
