The United States And The World Empire Between 1890 And 1945
Throughout the development of one of the greatest countries in the world, the he United States had
created a world empire between 1890 and 1945. In such a short amount of time, the country as a
whole as able to produce a homogenization of life where the measurement of national and
international power and the level of control of economic, military, political, media, institutions,
education, sport, music, etc. came together to form a new kind of American cutlure. However, during
this time, it was all about the projection of the American self and demonstrating characteristics and
qualities that distinguished the U.S. (us) and the foreign outsider (them).
The late 1890 s was the first chance for America to prove themselves. The worldwide ... Show more

Last but not least, it promoted a sense of national unity among the American people.
During this time, America also saw an extremely productive economy and what was able to come out
of working together as one instead of multiple little groups. Americans had been focusing on literacy
and technical skills that were required in the workplace. Money was being funded into education and
the growing premium. High school, college, and advanced degrees became not only credentials for
employment but also markers of social status. Americans began rethinking gender roles, which would
in time open the way for significant numbers of women to move into higher education and the
workforce (Hunt, 83) . With education being pushed and job opportunities on the rise, the United
States was headed in definitely headed in the right direction in terms of employing their people and
allowing money to be put back into their thriving economy.
As the United States started to build their own empire, the war fighting and peacemaking that marked
the McKinley Wilson years sparked a dramatic growth in the power of the American state. The years
after the war brought the economy out of recession and pushed the GDP in 1918 to twice the figure at
the end of McKinley s war with Spain (Hunt, 81) . Americans also pioneered a modernity that
promised a system of mass production and mass consumption which ultimately led to economic,
social, and cultural

Deep Ecology Essay
Whether its watching a whale jump up in the air and seeing him crashing back into the water, or
looking at all of the trees leafs changing colors in the fall time; nature is a beautiful thing. In the past,
traditional Native Americans once cared about the land. The grass, trees, rocks, and everything else
had value. Nowadays most people are moving away from these ideas and moving towards a capitalist
mindset, only caring about their own personal gain. Deep ecology is defined as an environmental
movement and philosophy that regards human life as just one of many equal components of a global
ecosystem (Google). Arne Naess was a Norwegian philosopher who coined the term Deep Ecology. It
may seem very similar to traditional Native ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This could potentially lead to the human population becoming extinct. I m not saying this is going to
actually happen or be an immediate result of our actions but this is what the world is coming to. The
companies are the indirect problem in this issue. It s the population s demand that keeps these
companies going which makes us the direct source to the problem. Almost everyone is caught up in
the capitalist mentality, only caring about themselves and seeing how much money they can make.
And when that happens they go out and buy more products which have negatively affected the
environment. It s a vicious cycle that doesn t seem like it is coming to a stop anytime soon.
In the story Creations written by Linda Hogan, Hogan talks about her travels to the Yucatán. Hogan is
a Chickasaw poet, novelist, essayist and an associate professor at the University of Colorado. She is
traveling there to search out her Chickasaw roots according to elders. She explains how in traditional
native American thought everything on the land has value and is considered sacred; everything is
living .She says the mud people of the first creation did not endure; when it rained, their bodies grew
soft and dissolved . In the next

Importance Of Heroes In Today s Society
According to Gerard Way ¨ Heroes are ordinary people who make themselves extraordinary¨. There
can be many people who are considered heroes in today s time. Such as people who rescue people
from life threatening situations. There are true heroes today because need help from others so that is
when heroes show what they are made of. Role models could also be considered a hero to some
people but not to everyone. Heroes are definitely needed in today s society because not everyone has
what it takes to defend themselves or get themselves out of life threatening situations.
What would you do if you were in a situation where your life is in danger and there is no one there to
help you? Say you were in a burning house or had a severe injury, That s when heroes come in ,
Heroes come in many different shapes and sizes such as a doctor or a firefighter. It is who you
consider a hero is because a hero is a different to everyone. Some people might consider your hero to
be a normal person because they don t look at them the same as you do. Most people would consider a
hero as a person who is willing to risk there life for a other persons. If someone is willing to risk their
life for yours, you should consider them a hero because a lot of people wouldn t

My Experience At High School
My mom and I were driving home from my club volleyball practice when I broke down in tears due to
stress. High school class registration was coming up and I still had no idea whether or not I wanted to
do band or volleyball in high school. Being a 14 year old in 8th grade, I never thought that I would
have to make such a colossal decision that would affect my life forever. I only had 2 more days to
decide how I would present myself in the new world of high school popularity, and I had no idea
whether I would choose the life of athletics or musical talents. My first instinct wanted to have the
best of both worlds. Maybe in the fall I could be part of the volleyball team and in the spring I could
pick up band and be involved in both organizations. I would be able to play the sport I loved and get
to know the volleyball girls and then in the spring reconnect with my band friends while playing hard
music and getting to know the band program in that way. In my heart I knew this was not going to
happen, there was no way that I could have both athletics and band in my schedule, nor could I truly
be happy with this decision. I would miss out on the best part of band, the marching and athletic part,
and spring for volleyball is the time when the team bonds the most because of the awful hell of off
season. I just couldn t pick this option, no matter how much I craved to have both volleyball and band
in my life together. For the majority of 8th grade I had my heart set on playing

The Effects Of Adderall And Ritalin On College Students
Sandra P. Thomas said in her short story The debate about Neuroenhancement that In a study of more
than 10,000 college students, rates were as high as 25% at some schools. The use of such drugs are
more likely seen in universities rather than community colleges. People who take neuroenhancement
drugs may feel as if they have to since college is so competitiveness to get into. Neuroenhancement
drugs are starting to become more popular. Thomas asked Readers are you seeing young people in
your clinical practice who are misusing stimulants? Adderall, Ritalin, and Provigil are all drugs that
people use to enhance the brain. Adderall and Ritalin are the most commonly used drug. Thomas
stated in her essay that The authors, prominent professors at institutions such as Stanford and Harvard,
suggest that the drugs will prove increasingly useful for improved quality of life and extended work
productivity (669). Because neuroenhancing drugs are easily available, college students often use
them despite the potential dangers posed by taking them without a prescription. Neuroenhancing drugs
are easily available. People who are prescribed to drugs like Ritalin and Adderall are selling it to
classmates. People who are prescribed to it often abuse the drug. Everyone I know has either tried this
type of drug or know someone who has. People who sell their medication to people who don t need it
are just like a drug dealer selling marijuana. Which is just as bad. So why isn t it

Challenges and Advantages of Doing Business in China
With China emerging as a global power in business within the last decade, knowing about doing
business in China has become more important than ever. There are both many advantanges and
challenges with doing business in China in this modern era, and understanding both sides of this coin
is the key to being successful in China. Some aspects to keep in mind include the cultural barrier, the
price of the work force in China compared to the United States, and have the made in China brand be
accepted back in the United States.
The main advantage of doing business in China is the fact that China has emerged as one of the world
s strongest economic forces, driven by the shear number of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This is probably the reason that doing business in China is currently so challenging. In addition, there
is always the language barrier to overcome as well. Despite the fact that most Chinese are learning
English as their second language, there is no doubt that being able to speak Chinese as an American
coming to China for business has a huge advantage over the rest of the competition.
Another challenge is that despite the ability to manufacture products cheaper in China, there is a flip
side to this situation and that is that sometimes, that made in America sign on the back of a product
could mean more than the few dollars more it costs to buy that product. Some Americans, in their
spirit of patriotism, care more about supporting the American economy than saving a little bit here and
there buying products that were manufactured outside of the United States. Balancing the stigma
sometimes associated with making a product in a foreign country with the lower costs that usually
comes along with that is important in doing business in China as well. As one can see, there is ample
opportunity for business in China. China s economy is expanding very quickly. In order to be
successful overseas however, there are many important points to keep in mind. In learning these
obstacles and figuring out how to overcome them will define success in

Athletic Trainer Qualities
There are many great jobs in the world. Most people like jobs with benefits afterwards. Some people
just like to help others. It would even be cool if a person can travel during their job. Yes, a couple of
jobs that have those qualities. Being an Athletic Training is one of them. It is always going to be a

In fact, another great option about being an Athletic Trainer is traveling. When traveling one would
get to see most parts of the world you would not normally get to see at a regular job. Traveling also
gives you a great experience in life. A person can learn different parts of the world while working. One
can meet people and may have chances to operate on some really great athletes. Yes, of course there
are jobs that are similar to Athletic Training. By being an Athletic Trainer that is the only one that
travels. For example, if you re an Athletic Trainer for a football team or basketball team. One will get

Environmental Degradation And Its Effects On Our Environment
We, as humans, have always had a prevalent impact on our environment and our world as a whole.
Not only has our societal presence caused negative global impact, but our expedited population
growth has also had an extreme physical impact on earth. An example of the effects of our
extensiveness is, ...86% of the world s resources are consumed by only the wealthiest one fifth of
humanity... (globalissues.org). this means that 4/5ths of the planet already has limited access to
resources that are naturally found on earth. In addition to our excessive consumption of the earth
natural resources, environmental degradation is the result of extreme pollution and wastes that have
made their way into our atmosphere. Because of our severe impact on nature, it is crucial that we stop
the accelerated deterioration of our environment by decreasing our misuse of earth s natural resources,
reducing the use of unnecessary technology in our environment and practicing more ecologically
responsible lifestyles. This can help protect the environment and sustain its natural resources for
current and future generations (thrall.org).
The earth s immense population is one of the biggest factors for environmental degradation. In the
reading Easter s End by Jared Diamond, he discussed the extinction of the Polynesian people of Easter
Island. One of the biggest reasons why they went extinct was because they wiped out their only forest,
ran out of life sustaining soil and turned to cannibalism. This

Tesco s Ways of Cutting Cost
B. Based on your observations from the visit to Tesco, identify how Tesco controls its operating costs
Making a profit is usually the primary aim of running any business, and although this is normally
achieved by increasing sales, it can also be enhanced through the careful control of costs. A business
that keeps costs under control will be able to release more resources for growth and be better placed to
survive in a downturn or recession. A structured and ongoing approach to cost control is an essential
part of any well managed business. Finding ways to reduce operating costs is typically a priority for
Tesco. On our visit to Tesco we observed that Tesco can control its operating costs by reducing the
number of staff especially ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some its shelves are made of wood and light material which is a good thing to reduce costs. The
shelves are also have wheels for flexibility, they can be moved to create space especially those shelves
which are empty. Its air conditioners were also made of cheap material to reduce cost. Tesco practises
bulk selling for instance cooling oil was being sold in bulk. This creates space and also reduces
unnecessary stocking of goods thereby increasing stock holding costs. Bulk selling helps to reduce
packaging costs. They also have their own bakery which means they do not depend on delivery from
suppliers or ordering from other suppliers. This is a good thing in that they only bake according to
demand at that period, hence it reduces wastage. This reduces wastage of resources because resources
are being fully utilised. The use of cameras as their security system is a good thing because it reduces
the number of workers to be recruited as security hence saving cost. Tesco is using energy efficient
bulbs to achieve low operating costs, incorporating energy efficient lighting and cleaner ways to
operate into the business and it has no empty refrigerators, this is to reduces space and the electricity
costs. Tesco will probably see a reduction in total energy consumption and be supporting a greener
planet.
Tesco maintains proper stocking levels of the items that they actually sell, this way they can reduce
overhead in the form of excess inventory,

Carrie s Alternate Ending
It was just another November outside the city, fairly poor on spare time choices, but rainy and gray.
Right between sudden showers, Carrie decided to move towards the mail box and send a letter she d
never be replied to. For years so far she tried to solve the mystery of her origins, writing to a father
figure that did not seem too realistic. Sometimes, at night, before she reached the happiness of an
undisturbed dream, she realized it might be just a story. Over and over again she moved forward from
her blindness, but believed the story already at dawn. That is simply how life functioned in her small
village she had to hold on something!
For most of her life, Carrie had fought misery and despair, as her mother died when she had been only

Language On The Summative Assessment
For the common assessment I chose, the students were reviewing all of the topics they learned over
the past week. The topics included: fractions, elapsed time, and multiplication and division. Some of
the language on the summative assessment included: How many whole numbers are in the fraction
and plot 5/4 on a number line. In order to do the review, students had to read the worksheet, so they
had to use their literacy skills. There was content development because it was a review of what they
students had learn as a result from being in my small group for that week.
B) Provide a graphic (table or chart) or narrative that summarizes the class/group s learning for the
common assessment.
Overall, there was improvement in the group s learning. The majority of them only missed one
question, and that was only because the question was worded awkwardly. They did, however, have
trouble on the multiplication word problem because it asked them for remainders, and I do not think
they have learned about remainders yet.
As shown above in the chart, only one student received the highest percent. This does not mean that
the other students did not show growth, it only means that there was one problem that the students did
not understand. In this case, the problem that the three students missed was the problem that I worded
wrong and explained wrong.

ENGL 101
17 September 2015
Textual Analysis Essay #1
Sharon Olds, poet of on the subway depicts a situation where a white female makes observations and
internal thoughts about a black male that she witnesses on a subway that Olds describes as
representing tension between the white and black races. The black teenage male possibly portrays not
just one black teen, but the entire race as a whole. He represents the entire race. Olds uses
enjambments, powerful imagery, as well as figurative language, specifically metaphors, in order to
point out the stereotypical differences and tensions between races in today s community and the bigger
picture of the common stereotype of Caucasian people being above the African American people on
the socio economic ladder. Her forceful tone reflects the severity and prevalence of this harsh
commonly seen contrast between the two races.
Enjambments can be utilized for a variety of different reasons in order to change the way the reader
analyzes and thinks about the poem. A basic reason to use enjambments would be to make the lines of
the poem look more even, but in this poem they are used for a little more reasoning. One example of a
critical and essential enjambment in the poem that helps Olds prove her purpose exists when she says I
am / living off his life (18 19). This really

The Contemporary Art of Atomic Vacation by Todd Schorr
Description Atomic Vacation is an outstanding example of contemporary art. The painting was created
with acrylic paints on a 6 x 7 foot canvas. Todd Schorr (American artist) painted Atomic Vacation in
2008 but, did not release it till the art show Designed for Extinction where he showcased his last
decade of work. This painting caused a huge controversy with religious groups from the area around
the Otis College of Art and Design in L.A. Todd Schorr is known as one of the best acrylic painters of
our time. The way he blends colors, yet making each one stand out shows in great detail how he has
mastered the art of acrylic painting. The color template used for this work was very wide, and that
only further shows how great of an artist Schorr is. He also uses thin, fat, swirly, straight, and curved
lines showing his skills of using the lines in a flowing way when it comes to the family and their
camper; however, he also uses jagged lines in the horseman and demons to show a little intimidation.
If you look closely at the ring around the mushroom cloud, you will notice that using a great detail of
shadowing, there are demons and monsters swirling in chaos. This alone shows how Todd Schorr has
mastered the art of acrylic painting with great detail. II. Analysis The subject of this painting is quite

Thesis Statement On Verbal Violence
Chapter Three: Verbal Violence
A Crucial Element of American Drama
In this chapter I will scrutinize the original thesis statement that verbal violence has eventually
become a more crucial element of contemporary American plays, furthermore it has apparently
become more aggressive and dominant. My aim is to show how verbal abuse appears in significant
plays (before a detailed analysis on the chosen plays: Quills, A Streetcar Named Desire and The
Vagina Monologues) and why is has become an important element of American drama.
Hate speech or the use of verbal violence is problematic as Tara Schoeller stresses it in her
dissertation, due to the fact that legally speaking The First Amendment protects speech. Though the
United States Supreme Court has created some exceptions to this statement, as Schoeller claims, ...

Into the category of low level speech or hate speech we could list the destructive language of
pornography and general everyday offensive speech, threats and fighting words (8). Freedom of
expression has always been an essential American right matter because it is in the heart of American
democracy while hate speech attacks a group or an individual, it is not a reflection of true democratic
American values, but rather the ruination of them (13).
One could argue that the use of verbal violence towards a group or an individual is a tool for a strong
expression, although Schoeller argues that these debates or fights are very seldom intellectual and
reasonable (16). Furthermore, as she states, many times in a dialogue hate speech makes the
participants so violent and frustrated (psychologically speaking) that they are not likely to discuss
important matters in a civilized way (16). She brings up a metaphor by saying that based on her
research many scholars claim that hate speech as a form of communication is a marketplace

DMF A new Biofuel What Is DMF
DMF, a subordinate of furan, is a heterocyclic compound with the recipe (CH3)2C4H2O
Firstly, the gravimetric vitality thickness, or lower warming worth, of DMF is roughly 1/3 higher than
ethanol, much nearer to that of gas, which enhances mileage for the same size of fuel tank. Regarding
volume, the lower warming estimation of DMF is under 10% lower than gas and more than 40%
higher than ethanol.
Also, dissimilar to ethanol, DMF is insoluble in water, which makes it simpler to store.
Thirdly, DMF has a higher breaking point, which makes it not so much unpredictable but rather more

Fourthly, DMF has a comparable warmth of vaporization to gas, which will defeat the trouble of icy

Joseph Von Faunhofer Research Paper
Joseph von Fraunhofer was a German optician and physicist who discovered and influenced how
astronomers view the dark line spectrum, the spectrum of the sun and the diffraction of light. On
March 6, 1787 in Straubing, Bavaria, Joseph Ritter von Fraunhofer was born into a poor family where
his father Franz Xaver Fraunhofer was a watch glass maker. At the age of 10, Joseph s mother, Maria
Anna Frohlich passed away, and only a year after his father died. This left Fraunhofer orphaned and
forced him to start working as an apprentice for a harsh lens maker named Philipp Anton
Weichelsberger. This was appropriate because since the age of 10 Joseph was already working in his
family s workshop. Weichelsberger used Fraunhofer primarily as slave labor, often driving him to near
starvation and exhaustion. However, on July 21, 1801, the workshop in which Fraunhofer was
working in collapsed. Although it seemed like a tragic incident at the time, in hindsight this changed
Joseph von Fraunhofer s life for the better, and therefore changed the course of astronomy. This
collapse caused a rescue ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He had been using a very thin slit to separate the light into its component colors, but discovered that a
wire mesh could be assembled in which the holes would act as hundreds of very thin slits. This was
effective because the wire mesh would split, then re split the passing light. Thus, in 1821 he
constructed a diffracting grating involving 260 wires that would produce a widely dispersed spectrum.
Although revolutionary, it took forty years before advances were made on his work due to the fact that
extensive time and expensive equipment were needed to duplicate his work. With his invention of the
diffraction grating, he transformed spectroscopy from a qualitative art to a quantitative science by
demonstrating how to accurately measure the wavelength of light

Summary Of Search And Destroy By Bruce Dawe
The poem Search and Destroy, by Bruce Dawe, is looking at the death and destruction of nature due to
human influence. The poem is directed at the current generation. It speaks sadly of a crumbling nature
as industry takes over, and humanity sucks whatever is still useful from the earth. Dawe, like many
others at the time, probably felt bitter about man taking nature for granted, and thought that he could
best express his anger and sadness through his writing. As I said before, the poem is intended for the
current generation who have permanently destroyed much of the environment, but it could also be
directed at man in general, or even the next generation to preserve and protect what s left of nature,
before it s too late; for our own sake as well. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Impact Of Beethoven On The Development Of The Symphony...
Discuss the impact of Beethoven on the development of the symphony until Mahler. Difficult as it
may be to define the true relationship of an artist to his successors, this difficulty is enormously
increased when the subject is as complex a man and musician as Beethoven. His role as both a
preserver of the eighteenth century tradition1 and a pioneer of romantic self expression, has secured
his status as one of the most revered composers in the history of Western music. Throughout his
symphonic cycle, Beethoven s own journey of self discovery can be very clearly heard. The Third,
Fifth, Sixth and Ninth symphonies were particularly pioneering; they used new ideas such as
programme music, orchestral and symphonic expansion and the prolongation of dissonance, inspiring
a new generation of romantic symphonists. However, there is an equally strong argument, suggesting
that musical fashion and history had turned away from Beethoven towards the end of his life. In the
music of his immediate contemporaries, with the exception of Schubert perhaps, his work hardly
played a vital force and it was not until the latter half of the 19th century that his influence began to

Wagner embraced the extra musical programmatic ideas. Through an extension of Beethoven s work

Grading System Ethos Pathos Logos
Alexis: We should keep the present grading system because it tells students that certain standards of
excellence must be met if individuals are to reach their full potential, is the most persuasive argument
to an audience that believes the current grading system is too competitive and should be replaced by a
pass/fail system instead. The argument uses logos appeal by emphasizing the importance of ambition
in the journey for excellence, since healthy competition motivates students to improve their skills in
order to catch up to their peers and ultimately become more skilled. The audience cannot deny that
increased motivation and self improvement are essential in becoming successful. There is also pathos

Ace is anxious about tomorrow. It was the day Ace was going to propose to his girlfriend of two years.

grateful to him for that. If he hadn t had forced me, I don t know where we would be today. Everyday
we have gotten closer and closer and I feel like we should take the next step of our lives. So Cassidy
will you take this chance and spend the rest of our lives together? Ace waited for a response. He hoped
Cassidy like the ring he got her. Cassidy just stared at Ace for the longest time. Ace, I m so sorry.
Cassidy was in tears. Why are you apologizing? Ace had never been so confused. Why are you
crying? Ace, I just feel like we are the complete opposite of that. I feel like we have grown farther and

Essay on Christmas Traditions Around Th
RELIGIOUS PRACTICE AND POPULAR CUSTOMS
The Bible provides no guidelines that explain how Christmas should be observed, nor does it even
suggest that it should be considered a religious holiday. Because of the lack of biblical instructions,
Christmas rituals have been shaped by the religious and popular traditions of each culture that
celebrates the holiday.
On Christmas Eve, churches around the world hold evening services. At midnight, most Catholic and
many Protestant churches hold special candlelight services. The Catholic midnight Mass was first
introduced by the Roman Catholic Church in the 5th century.

Santa Claus is not a prominent figure in Italian folklore. Instead, Italian children wait for La Befana, a
good witch who rides her broom to their homes on Epiphany to distribute gifts. According to folk
belief, La Befana was too busy to accompany the Three Wise Men on their journey to visit the baby
Jesus in Bethlehem. Now, to make up for her failing, she visits all good children and leaves them
treats.
In France Christmas in France is called Noël. Celebrations reach their peak on Christmas Eve, which
tends to be more wild than solemn, especially in the cities. The festival meal is , a midnight supper
that may consist of oysters, sausages, baked ham, fowl, fruit, pastries, and wine. In the French
countryside, families often burn a large Yule log and preserve the ashes to protect the home from evil

In Spain Spaniards attend church at Christmas, but during the Christmas season they also participate
in seasonal rituals that can be traced back to pagan times. For example, townspeople gather in village
squares around an quot;urn of fate. quot; Each person writes his or her name on a piece of paper and
places it in the urn. A designated person then draws the names out, two at a time. According to an old
belief, those whose names are drawn together will be best friends for the coming year.

Peter Pan: Female Stereotypes the cause of Women s Oppression
The movie Peter Pan (1953) is about how Wendy and her brothers believe in silly fantasies but to her
dad it seems to be problem since Wendy is already a young lady and needs to act more like her own
age and stop acting like a little girl. So Peter Pan takes Wendy and her brothers to Neverland so they
never have to grow up. He takes her so she could be a mother to the lost kids in Neverland. While they

This is an example of hegemonic feminine ideology because they put out Wendy s mom to be the
typical housewife that agrees with whatever her husband says. This shows how women are supposed
to be submissive and do as they are told by their husbands. But it also shows how women are suppose
be more silent than men and are not meant to speak out what they think and how women are never in
charge. They do this to show that the women always have to support the men in whatever they are
doing. They always have to be one s cheering for them. Society has the idea of women always having
to be the supporters of whatever their men are doing they have to be right there along them supporting
them and cheering them on because according to society that is the women s job. Later on in the

A Proud Filipino American
America is considered a melting pot of different ethnic groups. By today s standard, American culture
is the result of a variety of races integrating their own cultural beliefs into American society.
Throughout the years, the United States has seen a massive increase of people migrating from Asian
countries; they make up 3.6 percent of the U.S. population, a 199 percent increase from 1980 when
they constituted only 1.5 percent of the population (Ng). Like other immigrants, Asians come here in
order to seek a better life and experience civil liberties. According to statistics, Filipino Americans

What Makes Good People Do Bad Things By Susan Dittman
Describing someone with the word evil refers to them committing an action that is considered
immoral and malicious. Evil people pull off these type acts: robbing a bank, violent killings of living
creatures, and even mental abuse through verbal or physical actions. Many people always wonder,
what was the initial purpose of committing such inhumane actions? They may say hatred, anger, and
revenge are some of the causes of evil. Although these traits do cause the idea of evil in an individual,
the inspiration for iniquitous intents is in fact sprouted through the unideal human traits of apathy and
ego.
One of the human traits that cause evil is apathy; for it makes people not consider the other individuals
feelings and security. Every ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another example is in fact in our society. In modern society, people tend to act as bystanders, people
who don t pay attention to their surroundings. Take into the account of witnessing the scenarios of
someone being bullied and a homeless man begging for money. In the bullying scenario, most of the
time, the people acting like bystanders do nothing about the situation at hand. Typically, the right idea
is to address the stakes at hand, whether calling for help or even putting oneself out there.
Unfortunately, our society ignores the fact of another human is being verbally or physically abused.
We tend to be in our own little worlds when we encounter an event such as bullying due to the fact we
feel as if there isn t a way we can help. Instead of helping a fellow peer with a challenge, we re afraid
to put ourselves out there. We refuse because we mainly care for our well being or we simply don t
believe we have what it takes to fix the situation; this leads to the feeling of apathy. The homeless
person scenario is no different. When a homeless person begs for money, the common courtesy is to of
course contribute any amount of money towards the homeless man; however, this concept

is reasoning from facts to the conclusion while backward chaining is from hypothesis to the facts that
support this hypothesis. Whether an inference engine performs forward chining or backward chaining
entirely depends on the design which in turn depends on the type of problem. Some of the systems that

A Lab Report On Plant Growth And Growth
Background:
For my lab report we were given 4 plants to grow. The plants chosen were corn, sorghum, cotton and
radish.Corn and sorghum are monocots and cotton and radish are dicots.
Corn:
Corn is in the grass family known as poaceae
sorghum: sorghum is in the grass family known as poaceae
cotton: cotton is in the mallow family known as the Malvaceae. There are many types of cotton
radish: radish is in the mustard family known as Brassicaceae
Introduction:
For this lab you and your partner were to plant 4 different crops (corn, cotton, sorghum, and a flower
or vegetable of your choice). Radish was the fourth crop chosen to grow. The experiment was to see
the difference in growing stages in all four of these plants in a 10 week period. The height and
growing stage for each plant and seed was to be recorded. This lab is important because it gives the
students the ability to gain hands on experience on growing plants and being able to identify their
structures. Understanding what a plant needs such as: water, soil, fertilizer, and proper temperature,
would allow you to grasp the idea of plant growth and development. Due to us being in south Texas,
the temperature is not always suitable for growing plants. I assumed that the temperatures would be
rather high therefore allowing our plants to grow at a decently fast pace. I believe the radishes would
be the first plants to produce its fruit, then cotton, sorghum, and corn. I also believe that corn would be

Ventricular Septal Defect Research Paper
VENTRICULAR SEPTAL DEFECT
Overview
A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a heart defect present at birth in which the heart has a hole in the
wall (septum) between the two lower chambers (the ventricles). The septum develops parts of muscles
and other parts of the membrane. If the septal wall did not develop properly, the child may be born
with an atrial defect or ventricular septal defect. This means that there is a gap in the septum. This is
sometimes called a hole in the heart. . There may be one or more hole. The size and location of the
hole can also vary.
Causes
The causes of ventricular septal defect, similar to other congenital heart diseases are multifactorial in
origin, and they operate during the period of cardiac morphogenesis; they may only engage the heart,
or even other organs and apparatus. The causal ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If it does not and the child reaches two years of age, it will be very unlikely that the holes in the heart
closing off alone. Most of the small holes do not require any treatment. Drugs can be used to help with
the symptoms that can occur if the hole is bigger. These may include medication to relieve pressure on
the heart and lungs and also to help the heart pump blood properly. The surgery can be used to close
the hole. There are two types of surgery available: Technical Intra cardiac and trans catheter technique.
The surgical technique that is chosen is dictated by the nature of the side effects associated with the
patient s heart and lungs.
The intra cardiac technique is the most common and is carried out while the patient is under
cardiopulmonary bypass and is an open heart surgery. This is the procedure of choice for the majority
of children and performed by most pediatric surgery centers. The trans catheter approach is normally
more complex and should only be considered in selected patients at pediatric centers that have
expertise in this procedure.

makes Trump s response infuriate a lot of people is that he calls the people of the side that attacked

reason, and assumed it was a big middle finger to the flag and country. This really shows in tweets
such as, respect our flag and our country! and standing in locked arms is good, kneeling is not
acceptable. (Trump) The Supreme Court said before that flag desecration is protected by the first
amendment. This means that flag desecration is free speech. Recently, there s been a lot of hope for a
flag desecration amendment. People want flag desecration to be illegal. While flag desecration is
disrespectful, America gives the power to do whatever people want as long as its lawful. Since flag
desecration is protected by the first amendment, people can do that. Flag desecration is rare, so putting
an amendment for prohibiting it will increase the amount of people desecrating the flag. The
Confederate Flag is a prominent feature of America s history. It s been adopted by the KKK as a
symbol, and it was a symbol of rebel pride, for the South coming up to fight for their own beliefs and
rights. Many people believe the Confederate Flag is a symbol of racism, and a symbol of people
wanting to break away from the already great rights we have today in America.

Called to Service a Life of Missionary Service
After I turned sixteen (16) years of age, I felt the presence of the Holy Spirit calling to me and
directing me to serve as a missionary in the field. My internal strength is always my sense of faith
since I feel so strongly that my destiny lies in helping my neighbour as well as seeking a higher
purpose that my faith leads me towards a path of tranquillity and harmony with my Father. As a result
of my predilection of helping others, I have decided to act onto God s will and gravitate towards
missionary service rather than talking but, in fact, executing my quest. In addition, the realization of
assisting altruistically my fellow man on a global basis added another layer of purpose that serves my
Father on several levels towards my missionary life. For example, I ve always felt a need to help other
to seek a better life for themselves spiritually, physical, and mentally since I have made a
consciousness decision to follow my desire help others for the greater need of others rather than my
own needs that is more than satiating my need to work with those in need of life skillsets.

The Relations Between Native Americans and Colonists Essay
The Relations between Native Americans and Colonists
There are many reasons Native Americans and European Colonists did not have a good relationship.
The reason for conflict between Colonist and Indians was due to the Colonists insatiable greed for
power and land. Some of the reasons not only included physical mistreatment but also an ethical
mistreatment of the Native Americans. European Colonists not only brought with them many different
diseases that would later aid in the genocide of many Native American tribes, but also a mindset in
which they felt superior to there Native neighbors. This feeling of superiority led to an outbreak of
violence and many different civil wars. Due to the Native American and the Colonists irreconcilable ...

Another cause for poor relations between Native Americans and European Settlers was the constant
push for acquiring new land by the Colonists. The Native Americans did not just want to give up their
land and this resulted in war between the Indians and the Colonists. During this time Native
Americans were sold into slavery belittled and removed from their land, due to the fact that the
Colonists had more advanced technology and weapons. One of the major wars was the French and
Indian War which resulted in the removal of Native Americans from their land and many casualties on
both sides. Over time many battles were fought over land, even after America was an established
country with presidents, laws, and court systems. Native Americans were continually pushed out of
their land for hundreds of years while they were forced to move west. The constant push of Native
Americans out of their land would cause an event known as the Trail of Tears where thousands of
Indians were removed from their land by the Indian Removal Act. In 1830 the Congress of the United
States passed the Indian Removal Act. Although many Americans were against the act, most notably
Tennessee Congressman Davy Crockett, it passed anyway. President Jackson quickly signed the bill
into law. The Cherokees attempted to fight removal legally by challenging the removal laws in the

Fortunato Vs Montresor
As October ends and Halloween comes to its final hours, it is the perfect time to read a great author s
eerie story. Who better than Edgar Allan Poe? The Cask of Amontillado is a story told by a narrator
that goes by Montresor. He has come up with a plan against Fortunato, a man who insulted him. It is
carnival season. Everyone is dressed in costumes, drinking the night away. Fortunato has somehow
insulted Montresor and he is seeking revenge. Montresor plays off of Fortunato s weakness, wine. He
claims to have a cask of Amontillado, that he isn t sure is authentic. He reassures Fortunato that
another man can help him prove that the wine is real but it just makes him want to help more. The
wine is in Montresor s vaults, deep in the catacombs of his family. The walls are covered in saltpeter
that gives Fortunato a bad cough. Montresor urges them to turn around, he acted as if he was too
worried about the health of Fortunato and said once again he could get help from someone else.
Instead Fortunato declined and started drinking more wine. Fortunato becomes so intoxicated he isn t

The fact that Montresor shows sympathy and compassion for Fortunato s well being is complete irony.
Edgar finds it funny that Fortunato has no idea what is coming next, and that the Montresor practically
begged him to turn around and leave but he didn t which led to his ultimate demise. Fortunato would
die in darkness. No one would find him, he would starve to death, alone. It was the ultimate revenge
for Montresor. Fortunato, a well known wealthy man, would die forgotten and with nothing. The Cask
of Amontillado is one of many of Poe s dark demented stories. They re all filled with humor, horror,
and extreme irony. This story is a prime example of how much Poe liked to draw his audience in with
obscure, mysterious, and outright horrifying stories for pure entertainment. That is Edgar Allan Poe s
signature, and his

The acclaimed authors, Edgar Allan Poe and Arthur Conan Doyle, formulate the characters of Auguste

segments of often thought unsolvable cases. Through their comparable techniques and system of
deduction, Dupin and Holmes never fail to trace back evidence to the scene of the crime. However,
due to vast differences between the authors writing styles, the audience observes the main characters
as distinct individuals, ultimately reinforcing the notion that Dupin and Holmes are not clones, but

respiratory structures through the process inhalation and exhalation. Air moves in and out of the lungs
as a result of changes in pressure. Inhalation is achieved when the pressure inside the lungs is less than
the pressure outside of the lungs. The diaphragm contracts pulling air into the lungs. When the
pressure inside the lungs is less than the pressure outside the lungs, exhalation occurs allowing the
diaphragm to relax expelling carbon dioxide waste from the lungs (Acrobatiq, 2014). Air can be
inhaled through the nose or the mouth. When air enters via the nose during inhalation, it travels
through the nasal cavity. Once in the nasal cavity, the air is warmed and filtered by the nose hairs. The
air proceeds through the nasal cavity into the pharynx which includes the nasopharynx, oropharynx
and the laryngopharynx. The nasopharynx is the upper part of the pharynx above the soft palate. The
oropharynx is separated from the nasopharynx by the soft palate. The oropharynx also makes up the
back wall of the throat where the tonsils and uvula are located. Air continues through into ... Show

During external respiration, oxygen and carbon dioxide move from the blood in the capillaries into the
alveoli by diffusion. In internal respiration, cells release carbon dioxide as a byproduct of metabolism.
Oxygen arrives via the hemoglobin in red blood cells. These red blood cells then in turn, carry carbon
dioxide out from the cells to the pulmonary capillaries in the lungs to be exhaled. Oxygen and carbon
dioxide also use the process of diffusion to move in and out of the cells and tissues during internal
respiration. The process of respiration and gas exchange continues with each breath taken. It happens
continuously from birth to death. This process is vital to life and the function of all cells in the human

The Hershey Milk Chocolate Bar
For over one hundred years, there has been only one company that has been on top of the candy
industry in North America; Hershey. With over 14,000 employees, serving 70 countries worldwide
and net sales of $6.6 billon, Hershey has come out on top. The Hershey company began in 1894 by
Milton Hershey. The company has over 8 factories, but their main headquarters resides in
Pennsylvania. The beloved Hershey milk chocolate bar has been a favorite by many, but would it still
be if more people knew how it came to be that? One of chocolates main ingredients is cocoa. Cocoa,
or cocoa beans come from tropical areas around the world, but is mostly found on the Ivory Coast in
West Africa. Hershey, along with Mars and Nestle are the three major companies that buy their cocoa
from West Africa, but with further investigation, it has been known that over 4,400 children work on
those cocoa farms that they buy from. Hershey has bought and produced tons of chocolate for over 50
years that has had the blood, sweat and tears of the not only the children on the Ivory Coast, but the
adults as well. The way that Hershey has been able to sell to their consumers with very low prices on
all their products is because they buy from the cocoa farms that have child slaves. Many of which
were taken from their homes, sold or needed to provide for their families. They would come work for
cocoa farmers and get paid little to nothing. Children who work on the Ivory Coast usually are
between ages 12 and 16,

Kill Bill Volume 1 Aesthetics
Each person will make for himself the kind of nude he wants, with the nude that I will have made for
him. He ll put everything where it belongs, with his own eyes (Picasso, 2009). This is what the term
aesthetic is; an individual s set of ideas about style and taste, along with its expression. Aesthetics has
the role to enhance any visual object, appliance, theme and concept, inducing the trust and relationship
of form and content within a viewer or audience of a film or production. To fully understand how the
role of aesthetics furthers a theme or concept of a narrative we must look at the medium of film and its
scenographic elements. These elements contribute to establishing an atmosphere and mood for a film
or theatrical presentation (Eagan, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The quality, intensity and direction of lighting can influence an audience s understanding of a films
characters, actions, themes and mood. The colour of the lighting can also hold thematic relevance like
in the film Kill Bill Volume 1 where one of the crazy 88 members run through a red hallway. This red
is used throughout the entire film and represents danger (Kill Bill Volume 1, 2003). This explanation
is supported by the fact that the antagonists of the scene all emerge from this red hallway proving the
danger. Highlighted lighting in a film, for example, call attention to shapes and textures, while
shadows often conceal things, creating a sense of mystery or fear. For this reason, lighting must be
thoroughly planned in advance to ensure its desired effect on an audience. Lighting can make a scene
feel happy, sad, mysterious or even dangerous hence furthering the concept portrayed in a film without
even needing dialogue from the actors. Lighting in its entirety plays a huge role in the aesthetic of a
film as it creates the context furthering the concept in which the entire film happens (G., 2000). It has
an impact on acting, production design, costuming, editing, makeup, visual effects, the plot and

Public Service Is A High Calling
Public service is a high calling. A calling that certain individuals who are compassionate and
enthusiastic about serving their communities at large are willing to dedicate their profession and skills
to. Although there are many challenges in managing a public organization, great leaders are those who
have taken this opportunity and have inspired their work to be bigger than themselves in hopes to
motivate those around them to do good work. The development of our societies depends on the efforts
of the public sector such as education, environmental services, health and social care, that are
fundamental to peoples lives. Therefore, it is important that an effective leader in the public sector
who is much more than knowing the job and how to manage workloads and staff. There are many
behaviors and traits that have been linked to successful leaders, and more specifically, those who have
dedicated their careers to the public.
Leadership is formally defined as the exercise of authority, whether formal or informal, in directing
and coordinating the work of others (Shafritz, Russell and Borick, 361). However, challenges surfaced
in the public sector such as overcoming political and governmental pressures, inadequate training of
staff, high employee turnover, and possibly weak management skills in lower levels causes front
runners to jump through several more hoops than a leader working in a private organization. That is
why it takes a special individual who exuberates

Similarities Between Shakespeare And One Flew Over The...
Despite the intended purpose of mental institutions helping patients, some hospitals may do the exact
opposite. In the novels Poppy Shakespeare by Clare Allan and One Flew Over the Cuckoo s Nest by
Ken Kesey the protagonists journey and conflict creates the notion that mental institutions are
ineffective and detrimental to patients well being. The beginning of each protagonist s story
demonstrates the ineffectiveness of the mental institutions, then reaching a pivotal moment,
McMurphy faces a downfall, whereas N s benefits her, and in the end both conflicts resolve to display
the unproductive and harmful effects. These novels also portray other characters who the mental
institutions affect negatively, including Dawn, Ellis and Poppy. In the beginning of each protagonist s
journey and conflict exhibits, the ineffectiveness of mental institutions as the authors describes the
protagonists situation. N s initial situation exposes the unproductivity and dehumanisation towards the
psychiatric patients: The way it worked at the Abaddon was the madder you was, the higher you gone,
then they moved you down through the floors as you get better. And as you move down you could do

Having Poppy as a friend, Poppy guides N towards a healthier direction, ... you ve got really nice hair
... you could try a few highlights ... It would look really good (Allan 187). As opposed to having the
psychiatric institution guide N towards a healthier direction, it is Poppy who directs N through the
medium of physical appearance and friendship. This proves the hospitals infectiveness, as through the
several years N is in the mental institution, N does not get better until Poppy helps her. As both
protagonists reach their pivotal moment in their journey and conflict, the protagonists contrast as each
goes towards a different direction of

trials involving genocide or crimes against humanity
...it is often argued that trials involving genocide or crimes against humanity are less about judging the
person than about establishing the truth of the events.
In nearly all the criminal prosecutions concerned with crimes against humanity committed during or
after World War II, some observers have doubted the ability of the criminal law to deal with the events
precisely in view of their enormous moral, historical, or political significance.

Instead, it has been thought necessary so as to enable the commencement of the healing process in the

Different Kinds Of Punishments And The Corrections System...
In Chapter 10 Corrections , it went over the history, different kinds of punishments, how it affected the
inmates, and how the corrections system is now and how different it has changed since the first
penitentiary. Being in prison has always been an act of punishment and gives time to the inmate to
reflect their actions. Prison isn t a place to relax and enjoy oneself, an inmate needs to do work or will
suffer the consequences. We will look more into the different kinds of systems and how we got to
where our system is at today.
When it s looked over at a glance it s seen that hard punishment was one of the most dominant ways to
handle an inmate. When penitentiaries were first looked at it was during the Enlightenment era.
During this time, philosophers and reformers were rethinking of the way inmates were punished and
that the methods of punishment would actually affect the inmate. Before this time, the European style
of punishment was the dominant method used. They primarily used physical punishment like beating,
branding, flogging, and any other way to torture an inmate. After viewing how this is the wrong way
to deal with inmates the Penitentiary Act of 1779 was passed by Parliament. This act was based on
four principles: 1.) Secure and sanitary building, 2.) Inspection to make sure inmates were following
rules, 3.) Terminating cost of food for offenders, and 4.) Reformatory regime (Cole Smith, p. 295).
This act leads to the reform in the United States. There were

Deep Ecology Essay Whether its watching a whale jump up in the air and seeing him crashing back into the water, or looking at all of the trees leafs changing colors in the fall time; nature is a beautiful thing. In the past, traditional Native Americans once cared about the land. The grass, trees, rocks, and everything else had value. Nowadays most people are moving away from these ideas and moving towards a capitalist mindset, only caring about their own personal gain. Deep ecology is defined as an environmental movement and philosophy that regards human life as just one of many equal components of a global ecosystem (Google). Almost everyone is caught up in the capitalist mentality, only caring about themselves and seeing how much money they can make. High school class registration was coming up and I still had no idea whether or not I wanted to do band or volleyball in high school. Being a 14 year old in 8th grade, I never thought that I would have to make such a colossal decision that would affect my life forever. I only had 2 more days to decide how I would present myself in the new world of high school popularity, and I had no idea whether I would choose the life of athletics or musical talents. My first instinct wanted to have the best of both worlds. Maybe in the fall I could be part of the volleyball team and in the spring I could pick up band and be involved in both organizations. I would be able to play the sport I loved and get to know the volleyball girls and then in the spring reconnect with my band friends while playing hard music and getting to know the band program in that way. In my heart I knew this was not going to happen, there was no way that I could have both athletics and band in my schedule, nor could I truly be happy with this decision. I would miss out on the best part of band, the marching and athletic part, and spring for volleyball is the time when the team bonds the most because of the awful hell of off season. I just couldn t pick this option, no matter how much I craved to have both volleyball and band in my life together. For the majority of 8th grade I had my heart set on playing ... Analysis Of On The Subway Jake Lipschutz Lipschutz 1 Ms. Kristen ENGL 101 17 September 2015 Textual Analysis Essay #1 Sharon Olds, poet of on the subway depicts a situation where a white female makes observations and internal thoughts about a black male that she witnesses on a subway that Olds describes as representing tension between the white and black races. The black teenage male possibly portrays not just one black teen, but the entire race as a whole. He represents the entire race. Olds uses enjambments, powerful imagery, as well as figurative language, specifically metaphors, in order to point out the stereotypical differences and tensions between races in today s community and the bigger picture of the common stereotype of Caucasian people being above the African American people on the socio economic ladder. Her forceful tone reflects the severity and prevalence of this harsh commonly seen contrast between the two races. Enjambments can be utilized for a variety of different reasons in order to change the way the reader analyzes and thinks about the poem. A basic reason to use enjambments would be to make the lines of the poem look more even, but in this poem they are used for a little more reasoning. One example of a critical and essential enjambment in the poem that helps Olds prove her purpose exists when she says I am / living off his life (18 19). This really ... One could argue that the use of verbal violence towards a group or an individual is a tool for a strong expression, although Schoeller argues that these debates or fights are very seldom intellectual and reasonable (16). This was appropriate because since the age of 10 Joseph was already working in his family s workshop. Weichelsberger used Fraunhofer primarily as slave labor, often driving him to near starvation and exhaustion. However, on July 21, 1801, the workshop in which Fraunhofer was working in collapsed. Although it seemed like a tragic incident at the time, in hindsight this changed Joseph von Fraunhofer s life for the better, and therefore changed the course of astronomy. • 20. Summary Of Search And Destroy By Bruce Dawe The poem Search and Destroy, by Bruce Dawe, is looking at the death and destruction of nature due to human influence. The poem is directed at the current generation. It speaks sadly of a crumbling nature as industry takes over, and humanity sucks whatever is still useful from the earth. Dawe, like many others at the time, probably felt bitter about man taking nature for granted, and thought that he could best express his anger and sadness through his writing. As I said before, the poem is intended for the current generation who have permanently destroyed much of the environment, but it could also be directed at man in general, or even the next generation to preserve and protect what s left of nature, before it s too late; for our own sake as well. ... • 21. Impact Of Beethoven On The Development Of The Symphony... Discuss the impact of Beethoven on the development of the symphony until Mahler. Difficult as it may be to define the true relationship of an artist to his successors, this difficulty is enormously increased when the subject is as complex a man and musician as Beethoven. His role as both a preserver of the eighteenth century tradition1 and a pioneer of romantic self expression, has secured his status as one of the most revered composers in the history of Western music. Throughout his symphonic cycle, Beethoven s own journey of self discovery can be very clearly heard. The Third, Fifth, Sixth and Ninth symphonies were particularly pioneering; they used new ideas such as programme music, orchestral and symphonic expansion and the prolongation of dissonance, inspiring a new generation of romantic symphonists. However, there is an equally strong argument, suggesting that musical fashion and history had turned away from Beethoven towards the end of his life. In the music of his immediate contemporaries, with the exception of Schubert perhaps, his work hardly played a vital force and it was not until the latter half of the 19th century that his influence began to dominate the musical scene. Composers such as Brahms and Bruckner developed the motivic and intrinsically musical ideas in Beethoven s music whilst others such as Berlioz, Liszt, Mahler and Wagner embraced the extra musical programmatic ideas. Through an extension of Beethoven s work in both of these strands, his legacy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Evil people pull off these type acts: robbing a bank, violent killings of living creatures, and even mental abuse through verbal or physical actions. Many people always wonder, what was the initial purpose of committing such inhumane actions? They may say hatred, anger, and revenge are some of the causes of evil. Although these traits do cause the idea of evil in an individual, the inspiration for iniquitous intents is in fact sprouted through the unideal human traits of apathy and ego. Typically, the right idea is to address the stakes at hand, whether calling for help or even putting oneself out there. Unfortunately, our society ignores the fact of another human is being verbally or physically abused. We tend to be in our own little worlds when we encounter an event such as bullying due to the fact we feel as if there isn t a way we can help. Instead of helping a fellow peer with a challenge, we re afraid to put ourselves out there. We refuse because we mainly care for our well being or we simply don t believe we have what it takes to fix the situation; this leads to the feeling of apathy. • 41. Air In Respiratory System Analysis Breathing is an automatic process that takes place in the respiratory system. Air enters and exits the respiratory structures through the process inhalation and exhalation. Air moves in and out of the lungs as a result of changes in pressure. Inhalation is achieved when the pressure inside the lungs is less than the pressure outside of the lungs. The diaphragm contracts pulling air into the lungs. When the pressure inside the lungs is less than the pressure outside the lungs, exhalation occurs allowing the diaphragm to relax expelling carbon dioxide waste from the lungs (Acrobatiq, 2014). Air can be inhaled through the nose or the mouth. When air enters via the nose during inhalation, it travels through the nasal cavity. Once in the nasal cavity, the air is warmed and filtered by the nose hairs. The air proceeds through the nasal cavity into the pharynx which includes the nasopharynx, oropharynx and the laryngopharynx. The nasopharynx is the upper part of the pharynx above the soft palate. The oropharynx is separated from the nasopharynx by the soft palate. The oropharynx also makes up the back wall of the throat where the tonsils and uvula are located. Air continues through into ... The quality, intensity and direction of lighting can influence an audience s understanding of a films characters, actions, themes and mood. The colour of the lighting can also hold thematic relevance like in the film Kill Bill Volume 1 where one of the crazy 88 members run through a red hallway. This red is used throughout the entire film and represents danger (Kill Bill Volume 1, 2003). This explanation is supported by the fact that the antagonists of the scene all emerge from this red hallway proving the danger. Highlighted lighting in a film, for example, call attention to shapes and textures, while shadows often conceal things, creating a sense of mystery or fear. For this reason, lighting must be thoroughly planned in advance to ensure its desired effect on an audience. Lighting can make a scene feel happy, sad, mysterious or even dangerous hence furthering the concept portrayed in a film without even needing dialogue from the actors. Lighting in its entirety plays a huge role in the aesthetic of a film as it creates the context furthering the concept in which the entire film happens (G., 2000). In Chapter 10 Corrections , it went over the history, different kinds of punishments, how it affected the inmates, and how the corrections system is now and how different it has changed since the first penitentiary. Being in prison has always been an act of punishment and gives time to the inmate to reflect their actions. Prison isn t a place to relax and enjoy oneself, an inmate needs to do work or will suffer the consequences. We will look more into the different kinds of systems and how we got to where our system is at today. When it s looked over at a glance it s seen that hard punishment was one of the most dominant ways to handle an inmate. When penitentiaries were first looked at it was during the Enlightenment era. During this time, philosophers and reformers were rethinking of the way inmates were punished and that the methods of punishment would actually affect the inmate. Before this time, the European style of punishment was the dominant method used. They primarily used physical punishment like beating, branding, flogging, and any other way to torture an inmate. After viewing how this is the wrong way to deal with inmates the Penitentiary Act of 1779 was passed by Parliament. This act was based on four principles: 1.) Secure and sanitary building, 2.) Inspection to make sure inmates were following rules, 3.) Terminating cost of food for offenders, and 4.) Reformatory regime (Cole Smith, p. 295). This act leads to the reform in the United States.
