The Infiltration of Popular Culture in DeLillo s White Noise
The Infiltration of Popular Culture in DeLillo s White Noise
In Don DeLillo s satirical novel White Noise, we become acquainted with what we might call a
postmodern family a group of people loosely bound together by birth, marriage, and common
residence. But as we observe this family, we notice that the bonds between them are strained at
best, and that their lives have been taken over by some insidious new force. This force is popular
culture. For better or worse, pop culture has infiltrated the lives of our fictional family just as it has
the lives of real human beings. DeLillo s purpose in the book is best illuminated by Heinrich s
comment after the airborne toxic event: The real issue is the kind of radiation that surrounds ...

This element of popular culture has thus drastically influenced Jack and Babette s lives.
In the novel, the television quite often interferes. It functions as a sort of background voice, always
present but never really noticed. It is a source of white noise , essentially random sound and light
that is intended only for such purposes. Yet at moments DeLillo allows the television to come to the
front, and we are treated to a sentence or two from an entity that, later in the novel, simply becomes
the voice . The voice speaks, but the characters do not comment on it. Thus this instrument for
delivery of popular culture has so thoroughly infiltrated their lives that they do not even
acknowledge its existence.
This is, of course, best illustrated by Steffie s Toyota Celica episode (154 155). By the narration
leading up to this, we are led to believe that some deep, important and supernatural revelation will
follow: Distinct syllables this time, not some dreamy murmur but a language not quite of this
world (154 155). Yet all DeLillo gives us is the near nonsense words Toyota Celica. The narrator
then goes on to describe this phenomenon as part of some universal consciousness. Perhaps, in
some circumstances, a universal human consciousness would be something worth having. But not
if it is only able to think of cars! Furthermore, cars are expensive, materialistic objects and
materialism is certainly one of the tenets of the religion of pop culture

Dream Deferred Langston Hughes
Dream Deferred, more commonly known as, Harlem, was written by African American poet
Langston Hughes in 1951. Hughes used familiar themes and subjects in contrast to his fellow poets
that used obscure lines that focused only on a small audience. These themes mainly consist of the
Harlem Renaissance and the creation of jazz poetry; both of which were linked to the inequality
that was happening in America. He wrote this poem to show the inability of African Americans to
achieve the American Dream. This influenced Langston Hughesto use similes and alliteration to
illustrate the thought process that one may experience when their dreams are not fullfilled. It
shows the various effects that a postponed dream may make happen. To further examine the poem,
connections will be drawn, figurative language will be analysed, and close reading will be applied.

What happens suggests that dreams just sit around and wait (Schaper 23). This means that the
aspiration of one person cannot succeed without effort exerted. Based on an essay entitled
Deflation and Aggravation in Langston Hughes s Harlem, the author suggests that the poem is
about crushing the hopes and dreams thus creating a feeling of defeat in the human being (Grzenia

Colorectal Cancer Increasing Risk Factors
To start, one already has an increased chance of getting cancer if one already has a history of
colorectal, ovarian, endometrial, or breast cancer. Thus, due to her family s history of getting
colorectal cancer, Ms. Wilson should have already been more wary of colorectal cancer. Although
her race is not mentioned, the following races have highest occurring colon cancerrates from highest
to lowest: Black, White, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaskan natives, and then
Hispanic. With the specificity of sex, women are less likely than men to contract colorectal cancer,
but do so at roughly the same incidence. In addition, being 61 years old gave her a 0.92%
chance of developing colorectal cancer after 10 years, 2.37% after 20 years, and 3.76 after 30
years [5]. In regards to environmental factors, colon cancer shares many similarities with other
forms of cancer. For example, some environmental factors for colorectal cancer are diet, tobacco,
and lack of exercise.
In addition, there are several polyposis disorders, colorectal cancers that are passed on via errors or
mutations within the genetic code, that can also contribute to the development of colorectal cancer.
Examples of polyposis disorders are familial adenomatous polyposis, turcot syndrome, attenuated
familial adenomatous polyposis, and hyperplastic polyposis syndrome. On the other hand, non
polyposis disorders, or inherited colorectal cancers that affects organs such as the reproductive tract,

Defining The Short Squeeze Event
1 IntroductionBefore defining the Short Squeeze event, I will explain the concept of Short
sellingof stocks. Short selling is a strategy, where an trader borrows stocks of firms from abroker
and sells those stocks in the market with the condition of returning the stocksback to the broker at
later point of the time. Traders execute this strategy when theexpected future returns of stock
performance is bleak or have negative outlook.Forexample, if the future expected earnings, sales,
cash flows of the company is expectedto decline in next quarters, the investors will shortsell the the
stock now and buythe stocks in future and return the borrowed shares to the brokers. This strategy is
contrary to normal investment strategy where investors... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Essay on Current State of the Republican Party
It was a commonly held belief among the Republican party that Mitt Romney was almost a
guaranteed win in the 2012 presidential election. This view wasn t necessarily because Romney
followed Republican policy to a T but rather because of Obama s disastrous job with the
economy in the previous four years. History was well in the minds of most Republicans in that
particular matter since no president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt had ever won a presidency
after the economy had gone as low as it did and was in a serious struggle to rebound. With this
piece of history in the minds of most Republicans the assumptions was history would continue to
repeat itself even if Romeny wasn t the Republican parties knight in shinning armor. The election...

The first such way is in social issues. The traditionally narrow minded view on most social issues
has almost all but gone away and the open mindedness of the american people is more apparent.
One of these issues is gay marriage and the acceptance it has been met by. We see this with
certain states that have already legalized it and in more and more states contemplating proposing
gay marriage and placing it on the ballot. According to a ABC News poll, conservative support
for gay marriage has gone from 10 percent support in 2004 to 19 percent in 2006 and 30 percent
currently (Abramowitz). Another important issue is abortions and the womens right to choose.
This has always been an issues of friction in america but abortion has become more open and a
more commonly used option among women. For women who do not necessarily agree with the
practice of abortion they still share the idea that women should have the right to choose and
make decisions that are inherently theirs because it is their body. Womens rights have always
been a debated subject in american and it has only expanded over the years. Telling women they
have no say in their body and their future in the way of having children is taking a drastic step
backwards from the forward moving expansion of rights. Republicans failed to budge on their
view on womens right to choose while the Democrats made it clear they supported the right to
choose. According to exit polls 53 percent of the voters in the 2012 elections were

The Dog That Bit People Summary
In the story The Dog That Bit People , by James Thurber, mother tends to defend the Airedale s

Vlad The Impaler Essay
Dracula is known to be one of the most famous and earliest novels about vampires. Dracula is a
horror novel written by Bram Stocker in 1897. Dracula was written based on Vlad the Impaler
(Vlad III), who was the prince of Wallachia during the 15th century. In order to fully understand
why Dracula behaves the way he does, it is necessary to look at its linkage with Vlad The
Impaler. Vlad III was known to be a very cruel leader. Annie Shepherd wrote an essay named, The
Evolution of the Vampirein Fiction and Popular Culture in which she quoted a sentence about
Vlad III from Treptow saying, Tales of the historical prince have skewed him as a bloody tyrant
who enjoyed having breakfast among the bodies of his impaled victims, when, in fact, he was a
stern but just leader. (4) By being a cruel leader, people were frightened of... Show more content on

Just like monsters, he did not have sympathy for others. This is the reason why he killed so easily
and enjoyed watching the victims suffer. Same aspect is seen in Dracula when he tortures people in
many ways and enjoys watching them suffer. He often bits people and turns them into vampires
to be his servants. These all proof that Dracula, just like Vlad III, was cruel and lacked
sympathy. Marc Lallanilla, the author of the article The real Dracula: Vlad the Impaler,
explains the cruelty of Vlad the Impaler by saying, knowing they would challenge his authority
had his guests stabbed and their still twitching bodies impaled on spikes. (1) Just like this leader,
Dracula s favorite torture was to impale people and leave them for several days like that. The
cruelty of this monster is what makes vampires scary; the fact that they are here to torture people
and turn them into vampire servants. Dracula shares a similar characteristic with the old folk
tales. This is the biting and sucking of blood. Some physical characteristics of Dracula is also
similar to the old tales of Sumer, Babylon, Greek and etc. He is a dead

The Netherlands Revolt
My paper will discuss several factors that led to the success of the Revolt of the Netherlands
which include; hatred of the Spain monarchy in the Netherlands, failure of King Philip II as a
ruler, the union of the provinces within the Netherlands, the support of foreign allies and
Spanish enemies, and Spain s lack of funds. This revolt was composed of people from all social
classes and all of these men were all driven and motivated by a deep hate of Spain. After Charles
V, Philip II became the king of the Spanish Netherlands. Unlike Charles V, Philip II was not part of
the Habsburg Empire, known as the Netherlands. The people of Netherland considered him a

Philip II believed in complete sovereign power on his quest to create centralization in the region,
so he chose to exclude the involvement of the high nobility from any polices that the king made
or would make in the future (Zagorin, Pg.91). They would have no say in what the government
would do or what policies it would carry out. The accused him of violating the liberties of the
province that he ruled and even when various please were made to him change his policies, he
refused to accept the advice and consent of the nobility or estates.
With his insistence on denying the Dutch their religious freedom and then denying the nobility the
right to have a say in policy matters, he set in motion the start of the revolution. The Netherlands
was a region that had various different provinces; they were not a united front, politically speaking.
But one thing that they did have in common was that they looked upon the noblemen for guidance.
The noblemen were seen as leaders, sometimes even acting as provincial governors, and they
usually provided politically guidance to those in need, apart from dealing with any issues that town

The Corporate Culture Of Ford And Tata Motor
What really led to the success of the acquisition however, was the contrasting corporate cultures
adopted by JLR under the ownership of Ford and Tata Motor s respectively. Ford emphasized on
role culture and had a deeply ingrained hierarchical structure. It was a bureaucratic set up where
influence and power was correlated to roles and positions. Tasks were assigned based on the
position and there was little room for one to showcase individual talents and abilities. Production
decisions were made by top managementand they paid little focus on consumer demand. For
instance, Ford continued to produce big trucks and SUVs when the real demand was for smaller
and cheaper cars. This led to a steep decline in sales. Further, the fact that more importance... Show

This translated into a profound interest in the working of JLR, both pre and post acquisition. He
had immense respect for the two brands and wanted to continue building the brands on their
heritage and competitiveness, keeping their fundamental identities intact.
Although he did not believe in implementing his way of doing things, he did engage himself in a
manner he deemed suitable. For instance, he made several changes at the top level management
of JLR by bringing in experienced German executives who understood the luxury car market
inside out. On the production side, he was constantly engaged in giving feedback and was
especially involved in the development of the Jaguar F Type. His primary aim was to support JLR
s growth and not be in control of their operations.
He was convinced from the very beginning that the acquisition of the two brands was a sound
financial decision and it would be profitable in the future, despite contradicting opinions from his
advisors. He ultimately came through for the entity when it was in desperate need of funds by
pumping in capital through its parent

Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge Essay
Out of all the stories I have read in class so far, An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge by Ambrose
Bierce, has touched me most. When I first began reading the story I felt as though I was not
interested, because my assumptions of what the story was going to be about were completely
different than the stories actual content. As I set aside my judgment and let myself try to enjoy the
story, I found myself anxiously reading to the bitter end. This story was not only interesting and
unique, but also had an added twist at the end, which surprised most readers. Depending on how
observant the reader is with picking up on foreshadowing and symbolic meaning, one may realize
before the final sentences that PeytonFarquar was not actually escaping... Show more content on

While this section is not necessarily a crucial part of the story, it does help build Peyton s
character as well as the overall character of the story.
The third part of this story focuses attention back to the scene at the bridge, where the authors
deceiving words make the reader think Peyton has escaped from the rope and now desperately
fights his way home to the loving arms of his wife again. As I said before this part of the story
continues on a systematic path, describing every little detail occurring from Peyton s point of view
up until the last seconds before his death.
The main theme of this story, dying, opened my eyes to a view I had never thought about before.
The author presents an in depth narrative into the mind and thoughts of someone who is in the
process of his last minutes of life. This could also be characterized by going through some of the
five stages of dying: Denial, Anger, Depression, and Acceptance. An example of Denial would be
when Peyton says, quot;If I could free my hands, quot; he thought, quot;I might throw off the
noose and spring into the stream. By diving I could evade the bullets and, swimming vigorously,
reach the bank, take to the woods and get away home. My home, thank God, is as yet outside their
lines; my wife and little ones are still beyond the invader s farthest advance. quot; Peyton shows
signs of denial in this segment by presenting the possibility of escaping

American Short Fiction And World Story By Alan Cheuse Essay
The article American Short Fiction and World Story by Alan Cheuse compares the old tales to the
modern short story. To start the article he talks about the old type of stories by famous writer
Homer. Here talks about how these books are written by the culture of the time. With that being
said, he makes the assumption that the old time tales are only applicable to the time in history they
were written. This is pretty obvious because in today s world we rarely see the events that
happened in such ages. Next after talking about the period before modernism he starts to
contemplate the creation of the modern short story. Here he makes a surprising claim, where he
says that the modern story actually started in the United States with the famous poet Edgar Allen
Poe. This is surprising to many because in the literature world most people associate modernism
with European writers such as Chekov and Flaubert. He actually states the this modern sense of
writing started in North America, then went to Europe and finally arrived to the res of the world
including North America again. So we are left to ask, what is the modern short story like? Well,
Alan Cheuse compares the modern short story to the art story. He says the perfectionists of it such
as Hemmingway; owe their credit to writers like Poe because he in fact started it. The art story is
a story that is written and can be applicable to any situation within real life. That is Alan Cheuse
argument, and main ide of the whole article.

The Impact of Dean on Sal s Identity in On the Road
On The Road begins with the protagonist, Sal, (representative of author Jack Kerouac), being
overwhelmed by feelings of confusion and uncertainty regarding his personal identity. He then
meets Dean Moriarty , an eccentric character who rejects societal values and norms . Sal is
absorbed with and entranced by Dean, perceiving him as almost superhuman , and decides to follow
him across the country. A passive character, Sal soon becomes dependent on Dean, mimicking his
friend rather than discovering his personal identity. It is likely that such behaviour was greatly
influenced by events that occurred in Jack Kerouac s childhood . Eventually, Sal realises that if he

Then Sal meets Dean; a wild, roguish character, and is so enchanted by him that he believes he can
shape his own identity through being like Dean. Hence, Sal takes to the road, planning to follow in
Dean s footsteps.
Gradually, Sal becomes more and more dependent on Dean. He shapes his morals and values
upon those of Dean, letting his life be controlled by the decisions that Dean makes, and even
refusing to allow himself thoughts that contradict Dean s. The impact Dean has on Sal s
identity is clearly illustrated in Chapter Seven, when, after Sal and Dean have been staying with
their friend Old Bull Lee , Dean is ready to leave so Sal takes off with him despite his own desire
to stay. He has reached a point where he is unable to make his own decisions, and must blindly
follow Dean. His dependence on Dean has isolated him from his own feelings and thoughts, and he
has compromised his own independence and power to make decisions.
In Chapter Eight of Part Two, Dean steals gas and oil as Sal runs into the station and takes bread
and cheese while the owners are eating dinner. This act is a direct contradiction of the values that
Sal expressed earlier in the novel, when Montana Slim asked him to steal from strangers in alley
ways, and Sal refused. Such behaviour is a further illustration of the tremendous impact that Dean
has on Sal s identity, and demonstrates just how malleable Sal s personality at this point is.
Finally, in Chapter Ten of Part

Speech On Orcas In Captivity
Orcas in Captivity It s a average, nice summer day and you and your family decide to see killer
whales at SeaWorld. Once you arrive to the place and see the large animals in the tank you re
fascinated by their large size. Killer whales, or orca whales, are large marine mammals that can
be found in every ocean around the world. They can swim for hundred of miles and routinely
dive up to 300 ft ( Should Orca Whales Be Kept in Captivity ). They also live in large family
groups known as pods that they will rarely ever leave. Seeing these large animals in the tanks
that they make seem small due to their large size and with other whales along with marks,
mainly bite marks and flopped over dorsal fin for the males, make it questionable if they even
should be here and if these other whales are family in the seemingly makeshift pod. Orcas
should not be in captivity because of health problems, lack of space in the tanks, and most of
them are taken from their homes in the wild where their true family is. Orca whales should not
be in captivity because of health issues they face in captivity. Some people believe orcas should
be in captivity because they are safe from hunters. Also data on breeding and reproduction can be
collected which is impossible to get in the wild. However, orcas live unhealthy, shorter lives in
captivity. According to the article ( Should Orca Whales Be Kept in Captivity ) it states, Orca
whales in the wild have a lifespan equal to that of a human. In

In the past decade, network television has been bombarded by crime shows attempting to make

general set up of a male lead with a hot head who is complemented by his team of FBI agents. As a
loyal viewer and fan of Bones, I often wonder what makes it stay afloat with so many shows out
there like it. Could it be that Bones isn t like any of the other crime shows? Through its crimes
and unsolved murders, Bones helps its viewers make sense of the disastrous world around them.

scenario. The chemistry between them is undeniable, and as we have seen in the most recent
season, Booth has accepted his feelings for Brennan and, in the early episodes of season five,
has been trying to tell her how he feels. In the real world, many crimes remain unsolved, but in
Bones every murder is solved and the killer is brought to justice. As Letizia, the author of a TV

Brennan], working in tandem, to solve them. The viewer begins to trust these two characters and
think of them as real people they have let into their lives. Another difference, pointed out by Letizia,
that Bones offers is
Where an episode of CSI leaves one with the feeling that evil exists no matter what we do about it,
Bones makes the case that there is also good. Granted, truly happy endings are rare when it comes
to murder investigations, but the victims depicted in Bones often find some sort of redemption at
the end even if it simply means their families learn what really happened to them.

Analysis Of Street Art Of Israel And Palestine
Before the study of street art in Israel and Palestine can begin, first, one must understand why
these artworks are there a basic principle in any art theory. For instance, taking Picasso s
Guernica (see fig. 1.1) as an example, it appears at first glance to be a disturbing painting, very
abstract in style and chaotic in its composition. The appeal of abstract art is that it is less
superficially explicit. I would argue that this conveys deeper meaning to the viewer because of the
personal journey required to untangle what it is that he is seeing. When one learns that Picasso
painted Guernica in response to the bombing of his hometown, the namesake of the work, an
element of the celestial emerges, and Picasso s ability to express this... Show more content on

Therefore, it is widely recognised that the partition should stand upon, or be situated inside, the

Project A Satire
The action hero who does all his own stunts , that is what American audiences started calling
famous Chinese director, actor, and martial arts expert Jackie Chan. His movies are known to be
action packed, full of hand to hand combat, as well as having some comedic moments. The films
analyzed in this paper will be Project A (1982), Project A 2(1987), as well as Police Story (1985).
All of these take place in Hong Kongand are filled with satirical comedy as well as many martial
arts scenes. During the 1980 s, Hong Kong was known for its wealth, and it was recognized for its
politics, expensive real estate prices, as well as their entertainment. During that time, the

However, when it comes to satirical comedy, I noticed a clear distinction between the three
movies. The first two parts of Project A, give the impression of trying to portray a more serious
role. On the other hand, Police Story, has plenty of satirical moments as well as some sarcastic
ones. My conclusion to this is because Jackie Chan is trying to make fun of the Hong Kong society
at the time. During the 1980 s, crime in Hong Kong was abundant, and because of it, the director of
the film tried to ridicule the drug cartel portrayed in the movie. They are played as clumsy, and
easily defeated by Jackie Chan s incredible martial arts skills. During the whole movie, the astute
policeman, played by Jackie Chan, constantly outsmarts the Hong Kong drug cartel. In other
words, the Hong Kong cartel is portrayed as stupid and incompetent. During the Project A films

apparent. Sanpao, as well as his followers, play a powerful and intimidating role in this

argue drunk driving kills each year, and there needs to be tough polices to prevent it. Opponents
argue that aggressive methods needed for drunk driving violate suspects rights if they are under the
influence of alcohol. In the article Drunk Driving, the author reminds us that 39% of all traffic
related deaths are related to alcohol. Thus, the drunk driving rates is high, and must be stopped
because it leads to death of the driver and other innocent victims on the roads. The public safety
threat presented by drunk driving, and the thousands it kills each year, explains the use of tough
policies to prevent it. Opponents argue aggressive methods violate suspects rights. Drunk driving
checkpoints measures set a dangerous precedent for abuse of authority. Drunk driving checkpoints
waste time and effort stopping motorists who have not shown signs of intoxication in their driving.

Effects of Gangsta Rap Essay example
Obviously rap music is too violent. It serves as a musical accompaniment to the entire
underclass culture of violence, says the author of See No Evil , David Klinghoffer, in an article
in the National Review. This extremely narrow minded philosophy has neglected to discover
what rap music really is and what it means to its millions of buyers, who are mostly of upper
class status. Rap is not only music, it is also a black cultural expression that prioritizes black
voices from urban America, and it is a form of rhymed storytelling accompanied by highly
rhythmic, electronically based music. Rap music is a form of art or expression like any other
type of music. Rap music in itself is not violent. Rap music of today is merely a reflection of...

Take the late Tupac Shakur for example. The deaths of Tupac Shakur and the events surrounding
his death had and still have many people believing that rap music and the industry in general
played a part. Everyone that was against rap music used his death as an excuse to blame rap for
violence. They were saying that his violent lyrics are part of the reason that he was murdered. C.
Delores Tucker, a very famous anti rap music advocator, was quoted as saying Mr.Shakur always
talks about violence and now it has come back to him. What type of thing is that to say about
someone who has died? Shakur did talk about violence in a lot of his music but he also has just
as many positive lyrics. He has made songs about teen pregnancy, suicide, and one of his all time
bests was a song called Keep Ya Head Up. This is a song dedicated to black women. He tells the
black woman that he loves her and begs other men to honor and respect her as a mother,
sister,etc... The point of this brief on Tupac is that yes he talked about violence but rap music is
not to blame for his death. Shakur grew up in a terrible environment which caused him to have a
negative outlook on life. Tupac like many other rappers was educated and wanted to be positive
all of the time. He said, Yes, that s what I want to do. I want to move people. I want to heal them,

An Ethnographic Study On American Ethnic Identity
African Americans have been suffering a lot through continuous involvement in their lives and
activities since they were treated as slaves in the past. Today, prejudice against Black people is still
a complicated issue. In examining how people in a small group interpret and reinterpret their
identities, my thesis for this ethnographic study aims to illuminate how the ethnographic record
provides claims about African American ethnic identity in order to counter the impact of
discrimination.
I have figured out that attendant observation is beneficial to immerse myself into a community, in
order to gain a better information about the intricacies and inner psychology which could not be
obtained from literature or any other methods where information is simply provided. The selected
informant is known as a sample and is highly important for the research that characterizes an
ethnographic survey.
In addition, I will draw on my Profile essay where I interviewed one of my professors. The person
that I wrote about might be considered one of the most accurate model of how to deal with daily
experiences as an African American.
This essay is based on my personal experience at a Black Student Association. At this conference,
the speakers spoke about issues that African American deal with today. During the conference, I
was figuring out how much Black people have been going through from their daily activities. The
conference held by Black people gives me impression that I can never

Behavioral Finance By Daniel Kahneman And Amol Tversky
1.8. BEHAVIORAL FINANCE
The whole concept of Behavioural Finance was introduced by Daniel Kahneman and Amol
Tversky in late 1960s. They are called as the father of Behavioural Finance. Their observation
began to kick off a whole range of discoveries, with ramifications that investors cannot afford to
ignore. Later, Tversky and Kahneman began to uncover previously searched series of behavioural
bias that causes investors to act irrationally. In 2002, Daniel Kahneman received the Noble
Memorial Prize for his contribution to the study of rationality in economics. Understanding
Behavioural Finance and how it affects the markets is the key to a successful investment strategy.
Behavioral Finance is the new emerging science that explains the irrational behaviour of investors.
Behavioral Finance unwind the usual assumption of traditional finance by incorporating systematic,
observable and human departures from rationality into models of financial markets and behaviour.
It helps us to understand the actual the behaviour of investors versus theories of investors behaviour.

Causes Of Economic Inequality
Income inequality is one of the largest fear mongering tactics that the left likes to use in order to
advance their ideology. The differences in income in America can be attributed to many different
factors, however much of the theories presented by the major distribution services do not reflect
reality. Economic inequalityis the difference in income between individuals across the United States
. Sociologists define the social stratification of this as being the upper, middle, and lower classes.
The upper class (the 1%) household makes $380,000+, with the middle class making upwards of
$150,000, with the lower class being at the povertylevel (around $25,000 for a family of 4 and
around $20,000 for a family of three). There have been many solutions presented in order to
tackle this subject, however many of them have not been practical enough to get the job done.
What are the root causes of economic inequality and can it be fixed? This question has been
addressed by numerous people and usually becomes increasingly popular during presidential
campaigns. This past election has brought to light many of the disagreements and divisions
between the country when it comes to dealing with social and economic issues. Liberals believe
that income inequality is due to the faults of the 1% and that wealth should be redistributed.
They believe that there are structures in place that limit the lower and middle lower classes
from rising through the ranks. Conservatives tend to approach income inequality in a different
way. They believe that inequality is one of the things that will always be present in society.
Furthermore, they believe that your income is proportional to the kind of person you are based
on your creativity, work ethic, and resources. Thomas Sowell, one of the leading economists and
prolific authors, states that demographics means you can not have income equality. For example,
Japanese Americans are more than 20 years older on average than Puerto Ricans in the United
States. A 40 year old man, for example, has more than 10 times as much job experience as a 20
year old man, if you start counting from the age of 18 as adulthood. So there was never a reason to
expect equality. So I go through many different

No Child Left Behind Act was created in 2001 by President George W. Bush. The act was created

Secondary Education Act ...established that children from low income homes required more
educational services than children from affluent homes. (Reforming No Child Left Behind http:/

provide, educational opportunities or benefits for the higher advanced learners. It has been said that
the Elementary and Secondary Education Act is the most far reaching federal legislation affecting
education. This act created funds for primary and secondary education, as well as funds for
professional development, common instructional materials, support to educational programs, and
parent involvement within the school system. The ESEA however, forbid a national curriculum for

A movie product is the intellectual property that can be ported to a variety of deliverables: theatrical
exhibit, non theatrical exhibit, video tapes, DVDs, CDs of the soundtrack, collectible editions,
television and cable broadcast, Internet served etc. Then there is merchandising such as clothing,
toys, games, posters. Another product dimension is that of franchise rights, endorsements, product
placements and a host of offshoots that are bought and sold, leased and rented. The movie business
is one of the most complexes in the communications industry because of its creativity, its diversity
and its continual explosions of technological delivery options. PRICE At first glance, pricing in the
movie industry seems very standardized. At any multiplex is cinema hall, a movie ticket costs the
same for all movies, doesn t it? But if we look into the broader definition of the movie product just
defined, then the prices fluctuate widely. A distribution contract can be structured in many ways
that result in very different returns for the producer, the key creative talent, and even the distributor.
Elements that are negotiated include: в™Ј Theatrical release schedules в™Ј Territories and market
segments в™Ј Revenue splits, percentages and order of payment в™Ј Promotion budgets (P A)
Apart from these pre consumer stage pricing differences, we see a wide range of pricing structures

Rhetorical Analysis On Dave Barry
I found Dave Barry s article to be very funny, but true. Throughout this article Dave Barry states
his bias opinion on the way he views college. He is basically making fun of the education
system. Dave Barry uses his humor in a way of arguing the concept of how we are learning
things that we will never use in life. I think this article is similar to the other articles we have read,
but uses a different tone to express it. The other articles we have read were based off the education
system also. Many of the articles were against the system, just as Dave Barry is. The other articles
we read were more persuasive and informative, than an argument. They contained more evidence
and facts. Davy Barry did not have facts in his article, but opinions.

A Telephone Call Monologue Analysis
A Telephone Call by Dorothy Parker is an intriguing inner monologue, that portrays the infatuation
some partners have with their significant other. I personally found the story to be rather compelling,
constantly engaging the readers with Parker s use of repetition. Although it definitely isn t my
favorite story, it had an abundance of interesting aspects. A scene that I found amusing is when the
pemberley femalerole questions whether her concern over the males lack of communication is
reasonable, or not. She asks asks herself whether he won t call, yet rather will come over to her
house, without leaving any verbal message. That idea startles her, for what if he sees she weeping
in her house, what will that cause him to do? Based off of that idea, she wishes that he, himself,
would begin crying too, in a tantrum like fashion. She wishes the worst emotional pain ever would
be inflicted upon him. I found this scene to be rather interesting because it shows the innermost
workings of her mind. It portrays how she have a plethora of positive feelings towards this male, yet
after a few seconds of assuring thoughts, she fall into a fit of blind rage. The idea of back and
forth propositions is very interesting to read, especially when after a scene filled with clashing
statements, a completely different idea is thrown into the character s mind. There are a plentiful
amount of scenes I enjoyed, or was humored by, yet, this one I found to be the most intriguing. At
first, the story frustrated me. I presumed based off of the first couple of paragraphs that it would be
about a stereotypical woman, who is obsessive towards the male. I thought that the idea of the novel
was somewhat patriarchal, because the woman was almost belittling herself for being so
distraught on the idea of the male not communicating with her. Yet, I found the idea of God
interesting in this story. For me, I found that God, in some aspects of the story, wasn t supposed to
have any religious aspect to it, rather God was the female character referring herself. She was
contemplating to herself, asking herself questions, and wishing a plethora of wishes to herself, not
God. As an example, when she says, Oh, God, please don t let me telephone

Soon after a young boy enters, walking to the dinner table asking the father to go for some tea with

Within these three minutes I saw how the director and cinematographer used camera movement
to show the audience the family s dynamic through the eyes of Mui. The opening shot beginning
at 11:00 started off in a low angle, medium wide shot. Which then led the camera to follow the
mistress and Mui from the outdoor kitchen into the house. As Mui got to the dinner table the
camera ended up in a wide shot revealing the father and sons seated at the dinner table all taking
place in one continuous long shot, tilting and panning according to the movement of the actors.
As Mui walked off screen the there was a seamless edit, cutting to Khuyen entering the screen

Alienation Effect In The Resistible Rise Of Arturo Ui
This phenomenon was replicated at the University of Michigan s SMTD performance of The
Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, written by Bertolt Brecht. This play told the story of the rise of
gangster Arturo Ui and the corruption of the cauliflower business in order to satirize the rise of
Hitler. Despite this being a play, rather than a musical, the use of Copland s planes of listening still
apply. Theater goers can still view the work with different approaches either purely surface level,
meaning driven, or technical, like the planes of listening Copland describes.
However, the experience of the spectators was different at this play. The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui
was written to produce an experience known as the alienation effect. The alienation effect, in the
words of Brecht himself, is to make the spectator adopt an attitude of inquiry and criticism in his
approach to the incident (Brecht, 136). In other words, Brecht aimed to separate the viewer from
the plot and sensation of the play in order to allow them to truly understand and analyze the
message. In Arturo Ui, Brecht instigated the alienation effect in multiple ways, the first of which
was introducing the play. An announcer at the beginning makes it clear to the audience what they
are about to see and what the ending will be. The use of an actor within the play teaching Arturo
Ui how to act and the theatricality of the words was meant to further alienate the audience. The cast
and crew of the SMTD also

The Woman Behind Every Man

ENG 3UAA a
16 July 2015 The Woman Behind Every Man Can it be argued that men play a bigger role than
women in life? Through the centuries, women are seen as less valuable than their sexual
counterparts, but time and time again, females have proven themselves as being just as
intellectually capable as men. This concept is present in William Shakespeare s play, Macbeth,
which is a tragic play demonstrating the effects of absolute power and corruption. The characters,
especially the women, are heavily influential and greatly impactful in the growth of others. Lady
Macbeth s actions greatly shape and develop the personality and motivations of Macbeth, leading
to his ultimate demise. Although Duncan dies at the hand of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth plays a
key role in manipulating him to complete the murder. Following the news that her husband will
soon become king, Lady Macbeth realizes she does not want to wait. She wants to be queen as
soon as possible and for Macbeth to be successful, but she is aware that Macbeth is not capable of
killing King Duncan. Thus, Lady Macbeth takes it upon herself to convince her husband that
killing the king is just, which is present in her soliloquy as she says, Hi thee hither, That I may

A DBMS can also provide many perspectives of a single database schema. A perspective

Jekyll. Someone who suffers from split, or multiple, personality generates their personality or
personalities unconsciously. Typically, the personality is created during a traumatic event in order
to unearth a means to separate themselves from the pain felt during the incident. In order to
suppress the ache, their psyche splits into two where one psyche consumes the pain and evil
while the main psyche suppresses it. Furthermore, personality requires more than the frontal lobe
to operate. In order to function, personality uses the frontal lobe to maintain personality while
also utilizing the temporal lobe to balance the emotions of each personality. To do this, one
personality has to repress the other in order to manifest itself. Because of this, when another
personality takes over, the main psyche cannot recall any events that occurred when the other
personality had taken over, or when the transition between psyches took place. They also have no
recognition of the existence of other personalities unless told by a third party. Dr. Jekyll was
aware of the presence of Mr. Hyde within him and could manipulate when he transformed. That is.
at least before the potion mutated his genetic makeup, causing him to lose control over the
regulation of his conversions. To our knowledge, Dr. Jekyll did not go through a traumatic event
that could have created Mr. Hyde. Rather, he suppressed Mr. Hyde until he found an outlet in
which he could release Mr. Hyde into the world.

Is New York becoming a tale of two cities or has it already claimed that title years ago? New York
is said to be the city that never sleeps, why? Because there are shops and stores owners that are

experience driving. I disagree with it because I do not think it could be safe. I also agree and
disagree with delivery robots. I agree with delivery robots because I think it might help get your
package quicker, but I also disagree with it because I think that people will not use it in a good
way. In the article about driverless cars, I agree and disagree with the idea of it. I agree with the
idea of it because I think it would give the blind, elderly, and others that can not drive to give them
the opportunity to be able to drive just like everyone... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think it could be very unsafe because they haven t been around for a long time and something
could go wrong with the car. I think driverless cars would make people think that texting and driving
would be okay because you are not technically driving. I do not think it is a good idea because I
think driving is fun and I think learning how to drive was so fun. Also, I think: what if something
happened to the car the driver wouldn t know what happened or know how to fix it. I agree and
disagree with the delivery robots. I agree with delivery robots because I think people could get
their mail or packages a lot faster if the consumer needed them quick. I disagree with delivery
robots because I feel like if people saw this robot moving they would want to come up to it and
want to touch it, mess with it and break it and then someone would not get their package. I also
disagree because I think people are going to steal from it. I also think that this robot could get
lost or blow up. I honestly do not think it would work I think it would mess up way too much. I

Plastic Revolutions, Inc.(PRI) is headquartered in Reidsville, North Carolina and operates
primarily on the east coast. The company recycles various grades and forms of plastic scrap and

competitors, we contacted Ed Handy, General Manager at Plastic Revolutions, Inc. He confirmed
that KW Plastics, headquartered in Troy, Alabama and Envision Plastics, also located in Reidsville,
North Carolina, were their main competitors (E. Handy, personal communication, October 14,
2016).
PRI s Strengths Compared to the Competition
Plastic Revolutions, Inc is one of only two companies in the region that can process high molecular

  • 2. The Infiltration of Popular Culture in DeLillo s White Noise The Infiltration of Popular Culture in DeLillo s White Noise In Don DeLillo s satirical novel White Noise, we become acquainted with what we might call a postmodern family a group of people loosely bound together by birth, marriage, and common residence. But as we observe this family, we notice that the bonds between them are strained at best, and that their lives have been taken over by some insidious new force. This force is popular culture. For better or worse, pop culture has infiltrated the lives of our fictional family just as it has the lives of real human beings. DeLillo s purpose in the book is best illuminated by Heinrich s comment after the airborne toxic event: The real issue is the kind of radiation that surrounds ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This element of popular culture has thus drastically influenced Jack and Babette s lives. In the novel, the television quite often interferes. It functions as a sort of background voice, always present but never really noticed. It is a source of white noise , essentially random sound and light that is intended only for such purposes. Yet at moments DeLillo allows the television to come to the front, and we are treated to a sentence or two from an entity that, later in the novel, simply becomes the voice . The voice speaks, but the characters do not comment on it. Thus this instrument for delivery of popular culture has so thoroughly infiltrated their lives that they do not even acknowledge its existence. This is, of course, best illustrated by Steffie s Toyota Celica episode (154 155). By the narration leading up to this, we are led to believe that some deep, important and supernatural revelation will follow: Distinct syllables this time, not some dreamy murmur but a language not quite of this world (154 155). Yet all DeLillo gives us is the near nonsense words Toyota Celica. The narrator then goes on to describe this phenomenon as part of some universal consciousness. Perhaps, in some circumstances, a universal human consciousness would be something worth having. But not if it is only able to think of cars! Furthermore, cars are expensive, materialistic objects and materialism is certainly one of the tenets of the religion of pop culture ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Dream Deferred Langston Hughes Dream Deferred, more commonly known as, Harlem, was written by African American poet Langston Hughes in 1951. Hughes used familiar themes and subjects in contrast to his fellow poets that used obscure lines that focused only on a small audience. These themes mainly consist of the Harlem Renaissance and the creation of jazz poetry; both of which were linked to the inequality that was happening in America. He wrote this poem to show the inability of African Americans to achieve the American Dream. This influenced Langston Hughesto use similes and alliteration to illustrate the thought process that one may experience when their dreams are not fullfilled. It shows the various effects that a postponed dream may make happen. To further examine the poem, connections will be drawn, figurative language will be analysed, and close reading will be applied. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... What happens suggests that dreams just sit around and wait (Schaper 23). This means that the aspiration of one person cannot succeed without effort exerted. Based on an essay entitled Deflation and Aggravation in Langston Hughes s Harlem, the author suggests that the poem is about crushing the hopes and dreams thus creating a feeling of defeat in the human being (Grzenia 1). These two conclusions show the readers that desires should be earned or else it will lead to a bigger disappointment when not ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Thus, due to her family s history of getting colorectal cancer, Ms. Wilson should have already been more wary of colorectal cancer. Although her race is not mentioned, the following races have highest occurring colon cancerrates from highest to lowest: Black, White, Asian/Pacific Islander, American Indian/Alaskan natives, and then Hispanic. With the specificity of sex, women are less likely than men to contract colorectal cancer, but do so at roughly the same incidence. In addition, being 61 years old gave her a 0.92% chance of developing colorectal cancer after 10 years, 2.37% after 20 years, and 3.76 after 30 years [5]. In regards to environmental factors, colon cancer shares many similarities with other forms of cancer. For example, some environmental factors for colorectal cancer are diet, tobacco, and lack of exercise. In addition, there are several polyposis disorders, colorectal cancers that are passed on via errors or mutations within the genetic code, that can also contribute to the development of colorectal cancer. This view wasn t necessarily because Romney followed Republican policy to a T but rather because of Obama s disastrous job with the economy in the previous four years. History was well in the minds of most Republicans in that particular matter since no president since Franklin Delano Roosevelt had ever won a presidency after the economy had gone as low as it did and was in a serious struggle to rebound. According to a ABC News poll, conservative support for gay marriage has gone from 10 percent support in 2004 to 19 percent in 2006 and 30 percent currently (Abramowitz). Dracula was written based on Vlad the Impaler (Vlad III), who was the prince of Wallachia during the 15th century. In order to fully understand why Dracula behaves the way he does, it is necessary to look at its linkage with Vlad The Impaler. Vlad III was known to be a very cruel leader. Annie Shepherd wrote an essay named, The Evolution of the Vampirein Fiction and Popular Culture in which she quoted a sentence about Vlad III from Treptow saying, Tales of the historical prince have skewed him as a bloody tyrant who enjoyed having breakfast among the bodies of his impaled victims, when, in fact, he was a stern but just leader. Marc Lallanilla, the author of the article The real Dracula: Vlad the Impaler, explains the cruelty of Vlad the Impaler by saying, knowing they would challenge his authority had his guests stabbed and their still twitching bodies impaled on spikes. • 12. American Short Fiction And World Story By Alan Cheuse Essay The article American Short Fiction and World Story by Alan Cheuse compares the old tales to the modern short story. To start the article he talks about the old type of stories by famous writer Homer. Here talks about how these books are written by the culture of the time. With that being said, he makes the assumption that the old time tales are only applicable to the time in history they were written. This is pretty obvious because in today s world we rarely see the events that happened in such ages. Next after talking about the period before modernism he starts to contemplate the creation of the modern short story. Here he makes a surprising claim, where he says that the modern story actually started in the United States with the famous poet Edgar Allen Poe. This is surprising to many because in the literature world most people associate modernism with European writers such as Chekov and Flaubert. He actually states the this modern sense of writing started in North America, then went to Europe and finally arrived to the res of the world including North America again. So we are left to ask, what is the modern short story like? Well, Alan Cheuse compares the modern short story to the art story. He says the perfectionists of it such as Hemmingway; owe their credit to writers like Poe because he in fact started it. The art story is a story that is written and can be applicable to any situation within real life. That is Alan Cheuse argument, and main ide of the whole article. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He shapes his morals and values upon those of Dean, letting his life be controlled by the decisions that Dean makes, and even refusing to allow himself thoughts that contradict Dean s. The impact Dean has on Sal s identity is clearly illustrated in Chapter Seven, when, after Sal and Dean have been staying with their friend Old Bull Lee , Dean is ready to leave so Sal takes off with him despite his own desire to stay. He has reached a point where he is unable to make his own decisions, and must blindly follow Dean. His dependence on Dean has isolated him from his own feelings and thoughts, and he has compromised his own independence and power to make decisions. • 24. Causes Of Economic Inequality Income inequality is one of the largest fear mongering tactics that the left likes to use in order to advance their ideology. The differences in income in America can be attributed to many different factors, however much of the theories presented by the major distribution services do not reflect reality. Economic inequalityis the difference in income between individuals across the United States . Sociologists define the social stratification of this as being the upper, middle, and lower classes. The upper class (the 1%) household makes $380,000+, with the middle class making upwards of $150,000, with the lower class being at the povertylevel (around $25,000 for a family of 4 and around $20,000 for a family of three). There have been many solutions presented in order to tackle this subject, however many of them have not been practical enough to get the job done. What are the root causes of economic inequality and can it be fixed? This question has been addressed by numerous people and usually becomes increasingly popular during presidential campaigns. This past election has brought to light many of the disagreements and divisions between the country when it comes to dealing with social and economic issues. Liberals believe that income inequality is due to the faults of the 1% and that wealth should be redistributed. They believe that there are structures in place that limit the lower and middle lower classes from rising through the ranks. Conservatives tend to approach income inequality in a different way. They believe that inequality is one of the things that will always be present in society. Furthermore, they believe that your income is proportional to the kind of person you are based on your creativity, work ethic, and resources. Thomas Sowell, one of the leading economists and prolific authors, states that demographics means you can not have income equality. For example, Japanese Americans are more than 20 years older on average than Puerto Ricans in the United States. A 40 year old man, for example, has more than 10 times as much job experience as a 20 year old man, if you start counting from the age of 18 as adulthood. So there was never a reason to expect equality. So I go through many different ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He is basically making fun of the education system. Dave Barry uses his humor in a way of arguing the concept of how we are learning things that we will never use in life. I think this article is similar to the other articles we have read, but uses a different tone to express it. The other articles we have read were based off the education system also. Many of the articles were against the system, just as Dave Barry is. The other articles we read were more persuasive and informative, than an argument. They contained more evidence and facts. • 32. A Telephone Call Monologue Analysis A Telephone Call by Dorothy Parker is an intriguing inner monologue, that portrays the infatuation some partners have with their significant other. I personally found the story to be rather compelling, constantly engaging the readers with Parker s use of repetition. Although it definitely isn t my favorite story, it had an abundance of interesting aspects. A scene that I found amusing is when the pemberley femalerole questions whether her concern over the males lack of communication is reasonable, or not. She asks asks herself whether he won t call, yet rather will come over to her house, without leaving any verbal message. That idea startles her, for what if he sees she weeping in her house, what will that cause him to do? Based off of that idea, she wishes that he, himself, would begin crying too, in a tantrum like fashion. She wishes the worst emotional pain ever would be inflicted upon him. I found this scene to be rather interesting because it shows the innermost workings of her mind. It portrays how she have a plethora of positive feelings towards this male, yet after a few seconds of assuring thoughts, she fall into a fit of blind rage. The idea of back and forth propositions is very interesting to read, especially when after a scene filled with clashing statements, a completely different idea is thrown into the character s mind. There are a plentiful amount of scenes I enjoyed, or was humored by, yet, this one I found to be the most intriguing. At first, the story frustrated me. I presumed based off of the first couple of paragraphs that it would be about a stereotypical woman, who is obsessive towards the male. I thought that the idea of the novel was somewhat patriarchal, because the woman was almost belittling herself for being so distraught on the idea of the male not communicating with her. Yet, I found the idea of God interesting in this story. For me, I found that God, in some aspects of the story, wasn t supposed to have any religious aspect to it, rather God was the female character referring herself. She was contemplating to herself, asking herself questions, and wishing a plethora of wishes to herself, not God. As an example, when she says, Oh, God, please don t let me telephone ... • 34. Alienation Effect In The Resistible Rise Of Arturo Ui This phenomenon was replicated at the University of Michigan s SMTD performance of The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui, written by Bertolt Brecht. This play told the story of the rise of gangster Arturo Ui and the corruption of the cauliflower business in order to satirize the rise of Hitler. Despite this being a play, rather than a musical, the use of Copland s planes of listening still apply. Theater goers can still view the work with different approaches either purely surface level, meaning driven, or technical, like the planes of listening Copland describes. However, the experience of the spectators was different at this play. The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui was written to produce an experience known as the alienation effect. The alienation effect, in the words of Brecht himself, is to make the spectator adopt an attitude of inquiry and criticism in his approach to the incident (Brecht, 136). In other words, Brecht aimed to separate the viewer from the plot and sensation of the play in order to allow them to truly understand and analyze the message. In Arturo Ui, Brecht instigated the alienation effect in multiple ways, the first of which was introducing the play. An announcer at the beginning makes it clear to the audience what they are about to see and what the ending will be. The use of an actor within the play teaching Arturo Ui how to act and the theatricality of the words was meant to further alienate the audience. The cast and crew of the SMTD also ... • 35. The Woman Behind Every Man Matthew Lee Mrs. Wong ENG 3UAA a 16 July 2015 The Woman Behind Every Man Can it be argued that men play a bigger role than women in life? Through the centuries, women are seen as less valuable than their sexual counterparts, but time and time again, females have proven themselves as being just as intellectually capable as men. This concept is present in William Shakespeare s play, Macbeth, which is a tragic play demonstrating the effects of absolute power and corruption. The characters, especially the women, are heavily influential and greatly impactful in the growth of others. Lady Macbeth s actions greatly shape and develop the personality and motivations of Macbeth, leading to his ultimate demise. Although Duncan dies at the hand of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth plays a key role in manipulating him to complete the murder. Following the news that her husband will soon become king, Lady Macbeth realizes she does not want to wait. She wants to be queen as soon as possible and for Macbeth to be successful, but she is aware that Macbeth is not capable of killing King Duncan. Thus, Lady Macbeth takes it upon herself to convince her husband that killing the king is just, which is present in her soliloquy as she says, Hi thee hither, That I may pour my spirits in thine ear, And Chastise with the valour of my tongue All that impedes thee from the golden round, (1.4.24 27) Macbeth has the ambition for power. Jekyll. Someone who suffers from split, or multiple, personality generates their personality or personalities unconsciously. Typically, the personality is created during a traumatic event in order to unearth a means to separate themselves from the pain felt during the incident. In order to suppress the ache, their psyche splits into two where one psyche consumes the pain and evil while the main psyche suppresses it. Furthermore, personality requires more than the frontal lobe to operate. In order to function, personality uses the frontal lobe to maintain personality while also utilizing the temporal lobe to balance the emotions of each personality. To do this, one personality has to repress the other in order to manifest itself. Because of this, when another personality takes over, the main psyche cannot recall any events that occurred when the other personality had taken over, or when the transition between psyches took place. They also have no recognition of the existence of other personalities unless told by a third party. Dr. Jekyll was aware of the presence of Mr. Hyde within him and could manipulate when he transformed. That is. at least before the potion mutated his genetic makeup, causing him to lose control over the regulation of his conversions.
