With Malice Toward None
With Malice Toward None Essay In the history of the United States of America many men have
made contributions to our nation, whether it be small or large. Our founding fathers John Adams,
Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George
Washington helped give birth to our nation by successfully guiding us through a revolution and our
country s infancy. Franklin D Roosevelt led the nation through a war on two fronts eventually
defeating the Axis powers of Nazi Germany and Japan. The list could go on and on about legendary
men that made important contributions to the United Statesof America, however one man that seems
to always come out on top of all these men is none other than our sixteenth president Abraham
Lincoln. This man guided a nation through a Civil War that saw six hundred and twenty thousand
people die. Signed the Emancipation Proclamation declaring that all persons held as slaves
within the rebellious states are, and henceforward shall be free. And gave one of the most famous
speeches in American history with is Gettysburg Address. The amount of things Lincoln
accomplished in his lifetime could go on and on, but one thing is for certain he was one of the
greatest Americans to ever live. However what type of man was Lincoln? Noble? Driven? Stephen
B Oates gives us the best interoperation of the man Lincoln really was in his book With Malice

Racial Disparities Essay
Racial and Socioeconomic Disparities
While the ACA has been successful in reducing the rate of uninsured, it has failed in a number of
other areas. Data organized by age reveals significant problems when it comes to groups who are
uninsured, we can see a stark contrast between age groups. Among the 15.7% of Americans that
are uninsured, approximately 55.2% of those are comprised of Americans aged 19 to 34 years of
age. This is relatively unsurprising as young people have always been less likely to purchase health
insurance as the result of what many have described as some sort of invincibility complex. The data
on uninsured Americans becomes truly interesting when analyzing the data as it relates to race and
ethnicity. Whites compromise 64.3% ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In a political climate exemplified by partisan conflict and lack of compromise, it will be difficult
to pass either the more conservative or progressive plans. However, certain scenarios could occur
that would allow for significant policy change. If a Republican were to win the presidency, and
Republicans maintained the House and Senate, the political climate could allow for change in a
more conservative direction. Similarly, if a progressive like Bernie Sanders were to win the
election and Democrats retook Congress, a policy window could be opened to implement a

Character Analysis Of Richard Wright s Native Son
Richard Wright composes the short story How Bigger Was Born to explain why he wrote the novel
Native Son. He expresses his experiences, thoughts and feelings in the short story, which further
leads to the creation of the novel. Wrights expressions and ideas correspond to the events that
occurred in the noveland I consider my thoughts compatible with fulfillment. The short story, How
Bigger Was Born , is the foundation of the character Bigger Thomas and his told life. In How
Bigger Was Born , Wright tells of a memory he has of something he once read. Lenin turned to
Gorky and, pointing, said Here is their Big Ben. There is their Westminster Abbey. There is their
library (page 5 paragraph 6). The significance of this memory is to demonstrate that the two men
felt as though there were not living in a world of their own, they felt they were just a part of
someone else s universe. This supports the novel because Bigger has similar feelings to the two
men in Wright s memory. In a discussion between Bigger and Gus, they are talking about life
and wondering what it would be like to not live on their side of the line. Bigger then goes on to
state: They got things we ain t. They do things and we can t. It s just like living in jail. Half the
time I feel like I m on the outside of the world peeping in through a knothole in the fence... (Wright
20). I feel as though Wright used Bigger to portray his memories, therefore supporting the short

Race And Social Class Inequality Essay
Race+Social Class+Economic Class=Value? As shown throughout history, race and social class
have played a large role in determining people s values this is based on the specific culture and
the societal values fostered by their environment. In the case of the United States, as a result of
the enslavement of people of color, white people were seen to have the most value . The higher up
socio economically white people were, the more they were considered valuable. In the 1920 s,
racismwas still enforced by laws (such as Jim Crow) and this idea of blackness correlating with no
value was emphasized by society through segregation and stigma stemming from slavery. One way
that people of color went around their raceduring this time period to escape the prejudice that
correlated was through the method of passing as white. This method and its implications can be
seen in Nella Larsens Passing through looking at the characters Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry,
who mobilize themselves on each side of the color line. In the novel, Irene and Clare have very
different reasons for passing Irene passes for convenience, while Clare passes to alter her lifestyle
and identity completely. This shift in identity as a means of changing societal implications aligns
with Women on the Market by Luce Irigaray, which sheds light on the idea of the exchange of
women. According to Irigaray, women are commodities their value is dependent on their social,
economic, and marital statuses. The most

Analysis Of Love Medicine By Louise Erdrich
Faith is an exceptionally broad term. It can imply more than a few things. It could be confidence
or trust in a person or thing, or belief in God or in the doctrines or teachings of religion, or belief
in anything, as a code of ethics, standards of merit, fidelity, etc. There are plenty of different
definitions, but what they all have in common is the idea of believing. Belief is what guides us
through life, having faithis essential and brings good to our lives. It helps us reach our goals in
life, it aids us when we re sick, it gives us something to live for when we have nothing else. Love

I would have to agree, he did believe the love medicine would work and rekindle Grandpa s
relationship with grandma. Even Lipsha believed that his medicine failed, however, Grandma
says otherwise. About a week after they bury Grandpa, Lipsha enters Grandma s room to talk to
her. She explains to him that Grandpa is not completely gone, she can still feel his presence. It s
the love medicine, my Lipsha, she said. It was stronger than we thought. He came back even
after death to claim me to his side. (Erdrich, P. 296). She elucidates to Lipsha that the love
medicine had brought Grandpa s spirit back to Grandma. Lipsha feels Grandpa s presence as
well after that and begins to tell grandpa to leave this world, and to rest in peace. Grandpa was
never able to say goodbye and Grandma believes that the love medicine had brought Grandpa back
once more to embrace her and remind her how much he loved her. Even though the Love medicine
killed Grandpa, it did, however, bestow the love Grandma sought after from him. This was the true
purpose behind the medicine. Lipsha later states, that it wasn t the love medicine that brought him
back, but his true feelings for Grandma that did. The maturity that Lipsha has in this situation really
shows how he has grown as a person. Instead of taking credit, and going along with the idea that

Introduction
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a tasteless, odorless, and colorless toxic gas that is produced primarily
as a result of incomplete combustion of carbon material. Due to humans inability to perceive this
gas CO it is commonly referred to as silent killer. Inhalation of CO is the leading cause of
accidental deaths in the United States. Excluding deaths caused by fires, there are around 2,700
deaths as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning annually. The Center for Disease Control and
Prevention (CDC) reports that around 450 deaths are caused by accidental CO toxicity every year.
While the total number of deaths seems low, an estimated 50,000 people in America visit the
emergency hospital departments showing signs of CO poisoning. Exposure to CO results ... Show

It causes death by the CO binding rapidly to the haemoglobin (Hb) resulting in the
carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) formation. As a result, the blood s oxygen carrying capacity is reduced
leading to tissue hypoxia (Chand Meena, 2014). The presence of COHb changes the Hb s oxygen
affinity by altering oxyhemoglobin dissociation reducing the oxygen delivered to the tissues,
leading to tissue hypoxia. More importantly, other oxygen carrying hemeproteins such as
cytochrome P 450, myoglobin, and cytochrome c oxidase also compete with oxygen for binding
sites (Caughey, 1970). It has been demonstrated that cytochrome oxidase oxygen affinity causes
impairment of mitochondrial respiration. Even though the level of COHb is a vital clinical
measure of carbon monoxide exposure, the most crucial mechanism by which carbon monoxide
causes toxicity is its combination with cytochrome oxidase. In addition, carbon monoxide may
produce toxicity by binding to myoglobin causing impairment of the cardiac output and leading to
cerebral ischemia. The dissociation of carboxymyoglobin is slower compared to COHb because of
CO s increased affinity for myoglobin (Myers, Linberg, Cowley,

On January 20, 1961, John Fitzgerald Kennedy gave his inaugural address in front of thousands of
anticipating Americans. Fear and uncertainty was imbedded in the minds of all Americans as the
Cold War neared its climax. The United States were also struggling with racial tensions and social
inequalities, leading into the presidential election of 1961. With severe consideration for the
ongoing national and international turmoil, President Kennedy sought to invoke a sense of unity in
the American people. Furthermore, Kennedy=s inaugural address uses pathos to flatter and

Detection Of Optic Disc Location
Automatic Detection of optic disc location in Color Fundus Retinal Images Using Circle Operator
Abstract In this work a method is proposed to detect optic disk (OD) automatically in color retinal
fundus image without using background mask and blood vessels. Based on the properties of OD,
an idea of circle operator is presented here. This method has been applied on six public databases
and the promising results are obtained. The experimental results indicate that this proposed method
of automatic OD detection has good accuracy and is also time efficient.
In modern ophthalmology, detection of optic disk is a very important step for retinal image
analysis. It is one of the main feature of extracting the anatomical structure of the retina as
illustrated in Fig. 1(a). Optic disk can be defined as the circular brighter region in retinal fundus
image where blood vessels converge and optic nerve is formed. OD detection is very indispensable
for the computer aided diagnosis of different eye diseases such as glaucoma detection and diabetic
retinopathy [1]. Fig. 1(b) represents the fundus image with retinal lesion.
Many optic disc detection methods have been proposed ear lier. In [4] [6], image brightness based
methods are proposed. In these methods it is expected that the OD usually resembles according to
the brightest pixels within fundus images. In [7] and [8], image variation based methods are
proposed based on the statement that the OD has a high image variation due to the

Descriptive Essay On My Grandmother
Granddaughter Peeping through the blinds, I wave goodbye to my mom in her red, Mercedes
Benz, and to my dad in his white, Toyota van, watching them go opposite directions towards
work. I stumble across the couch, leaving indents from my knees, and walk into the kitchen
where my grandmother stands with her familiar gray mug filled with steaming coffee and two
cubes of sugar. As I walk to her side at the counter, I reach into a pink, plastic fruit basket
containing ripe treasures purchased from Lion s Supermarket. Two fruits: an apple and an
orange, immediately sit upon my two hands. Shoving the round red into my grandma s eyes, I
await an answer. She squints, wrinkles deepening on her forehead, as if the apple was the
challenge question on a math test. Or...ange, she says. I shake my head, and sound out the
beginning letters of the fruit I was offering, until the word, apple, struggles out of her mouth. We
both smile at the accomplishment as she points down at the orange and correctly states its name,
confident in fashion. This calls for celebratory peeled orange and sliced sweet apple. Two weeks
and two fruits, teaching my Chinese grandma some English words marks the biggest
accomplishment of my first grade self. My first vivid memory of her, back when she wore floral
button ups from China, cooked egg fried rice for our summer lunches, and washed my hair in the
sink. I was her granddaughter. She was my mother s mДЃmДЃ.We did not have the typical

Evolution of Cars from 1970s-2010
The automobile industry is known for its constant remodeling and change from year to year. While
there are not generally drastic changes, there are societal and cultural changes that affect the styling
of the automobiles that companies produce. Beginning in the 1970 s there were drastic changes in
society that completely altered the products car companies were distributing, such as the change
from muscle cars to smaller fuel efficient economy cars. As time progressed the evolution of
popular cars such as the station wagon, minivan, and SUV, were influenced by social, political, and
economic factors that inevitable dictated the progression of the automobileindustry. The 1970 s

the 1970 s due to the need for performance with high fuel efficiency. Designs such as the
Volkswagen Golf and Passat, BMW 3, 5 and 7 series, and Mercedes Benz S Class appeared at the
latter half of the decade. The designs of Giorgetto Giugiaro became dominant, along with those of
Marcello Gandini in Italy. These smaller more streamlined cars took over the market because of
their fuel efficiency as well as its innovative design for the time (Volkswagen). The Japanese
automobile industry also flourished during the 1970 s compared to other major auto industries. It

fuel efficiency, which had a high appeal to American customers due to the oil embargo. Japanese

Romance Embodied through Figurative Language in Taylor Swift s Red The song Red was
written and recorded by famed singer/songwriter Taylor Swift for her album of the same name. It
is a song that is full of figurative speech; the songstress makes use of similes, metaphors, and
imagery. These three techniques work together to convey the many emotions the singer feels when
she looks back at the end of relationship. Red is a song that is about remembering a relationship
and thinking about the emotions good or bad that it brought on. The first two lines of the song,
Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street /Faster than the wind,
passionate as sin, ending so suddenly, provide an example of how Swift uses similes in this song.
The artist is writing about how passionate, wild and reckless this progressing relationship was,
even though it eventually came to an abrupt halt. Swift again makes use of the simile when she
writes, Loving him is like trying to change your mind once you re already flying through the free
fall. This line can be interpreted to mean that Swift began to have second thoughts about the
relationship, but she was already in love, so it was too late to back down. ... Show more content on

of eliciting help from preoccupied parents. Preoedipal and oedipal issues appear to be at the root
of many of these problems (Sours, 1980; Schulman, 2002). Sours (1980), one of the first theorists
to study the role that oedipal and preoedipal issues played in eating disorders, noted that his
anorexic patients demonstrated separation anxieties as well as fear of control. Additional research
offers confirmatory evidence that oedipal and preoedipal issues are salient for women with bulimia
(Sperling, 1978; Wilson, 1992; Schulman, 2002). Therefore, bulimia nervosa(BN) can appropriately
be conceptualized as reflecting both oedipal and preoedipal pathology, depending on the individual

Like Water For Chocolate Feminism Essay
Feminism can be defined as the belief that women and men should have equal rights and
opportunities.
I think Like Water For Chocolate is a feminist novel because the two main characters in the novel
exhibit characteristics that represent what a feminist is. Feminism is the belief that women and
men should have equal rights and opportunities. Tita and Gertrudis show through their behavior,
actions, and language that they believe that women should be able to live a life with the same rights
and opportunities as men.
The first reason Tita supports my belief that Like Water For Chocolateis a feminist novel is that she
demonstrated her feminism by rejecting conforms to social norms for female behavior and
choosing instead her equal right to fully love Pedro by having an ... Show more content on

There are many fun and exciting games in the winter Olympic. There is snowboarding, figure

goal of the game is to hit a round puck into a guarded goal. Each team has six players and one
goalie on the court at one time. Each player has protective gear like helmets and pads. They also
have a hockey stick that they use to hit the puck into the goal. The goalie s gear is a little different
than the players. The goalie has very thick pads that cover his entire body, a large helmet, and a

carefully and logically constructed, but addresses its themes fully and effectively. The play
communicates different ideas on war, materialism, family, and honesty. However, the main focus,
especially at the play s climax, is the issue of personal responsibility. In particular, Miller
demonstrates the dangers of shirking responsibility and, then, ascribing blame to others.
Nearly every character in All My Sons, in one way or another, fails to take responsibility. The
Keller family, as a whole, is severely dysfunctional in that they keep secrets and ... Show more

The ramifications of his action is that not only did young men die in the war but his friend and
business partner, Steve, was sent to prison for the crime.
Meanwhile, Joe continues to live as a free, but possibly haunted, man. There is great irony in his
speech about his return home from jail:
The story was, I pulled a fast one getting myself exonerated. So I get out of my car, and I walk
down the street. But very slow. And with a smile. The beast!. I was the beast; the guy who sold
cracked cylinder heads to the Army Air Force; the guy who made twenty one P 40 s crash in
Australia. (628)
His cool words of innocence seem to belie the fear of being found out and the continual struggle to
convince himself that he really is not guilty. He does, as the saying goes, protest too much. The
truth, when revealed at the end, really is more than he can live with. When others recognize what
he has known in his heart all along, Joe kills himself.
As mentioned above, All My Sons is not just about the failure to be responsible; it is about
blaming others for one s own wrongs, that includes giving responsibility to another for one s own
life. This, too, is a facet of almost every character s personality. While Joe, again, is the major
character to give blame, others do as well.
Steve s children, George and Ann, place much responsibility for their own actions on Chris. George

Cowboy Vs. Samurai
Despite being titled Cowboy vs. Samurai, there is no literal cowboy or samurai, or a physical
showdown between the two; instead it is an ideological clash between the two extremes in what
they represent: identities. Set in a present day town Wyoming, Golamco presents to us the desperate
struggles of Travis and Chester in defining their own identities and find a sense of true belonging,
during which they must both turn to reference and reiterate the conventions of meaning that define
communities, societies or nations (Lee, 185).

As the species that depends on sight more than any other scent, seeing so often has certainly
become much more than believing, which is only further reinforced by this age of intense and
numerous visual stimuli. Upon my recent visit to New York City, I could easily see that the line
for the virtual city ride at the Empire State building was much longer than that for the
observation deck. This mania for visual experience has taken over, increasing our conviction in
what we see as what is, despite their crucial differences. Yet, this is no newfound novelty. The
human tendency to take things at their face value is ancient and persisting. This excessive
dependence on visual stimulation has led to an excessive false belief in the falsity of
appearances; a belief that causes the casual classification of people that is so rigid and narrow in
its function that failure to fit into them results in losing one s sense of identity, even when
identity is itself such a fluid and complex concept. I have always contended that human beings
have a tendency to classify what we experience into categories and assign them with labels. With
our dependence on visual stimulation, we generate concepts and categorizations based on what
we see, and file them away to be used on a wider scale, allowing those who live in China and
those who live in the UK to synthesis the signified through a similar signifier. As our world

Newark, New Jersey Neighborhoods, Real Estate and Rental Markets
Newark is the most populous city in the state of New Jersey, and one of the nation s largest
shipping hubs. It is the sixty seventh most populous city in the country and has just over two
hundred seventy five thousand residents. This makes it the second most populated city in the New
York metropolitan region, after New York City
. It is the largest port on the Eastern Seaboard,
location of several corporate headquarters, and several universities. It is a diverse city, made up of
five wards containing many neighborhoods that vary greatly, from urban business and industrial
districts, to quiet near rural areas on the outskirts of the city.
Newark, New Jersey Neighborhoods
Newark s residents usually identify themselves by which of the five political wards in they make
their home in, and occasionally by the individual neighborhood in which they live. The East and
South Wards of the city are mostly given over to industrial use and contain most of the airport
and seaport lands. The city s residential areas are largely concentrated in the North, Central, and
West Wards. The size of the wards is dictated by New Jersey State Law. The largest ward in the
city may not be more than ten percent of the average ward size larger, by population, than the
smallest. This requirement necessitates the redrawing of ward boundaries on a somewhat regular
basis.
The Central Ward, which many locals still call by its old name the old

In late 2008, many developed economies where in or close to recession, with growth slowing
noticeably in the emerging economies. These events prompted an easing of monetary policy and
expansionary fiscal measures in many countries (Reserve Bank of Australia, 2008).
The policy rate is the target cash rate set by central banks. This is also the market interest rate on

The nominal interest rate is the rate quoted that does not consider inflation. The rate that takes
inflation into account is known as the real interest rate (Mishkin, 2013). The real interest rate is
more accurately defined from the Fisher equation. The Fisher equation states that the nominal
interest rate i equals the real interest rate r plus the expected rate of inflation ПЂ^e:

Rearranging terms, the real interest rate equals the nominal interest rate minus the expected

John Paul II Essays
JOHN PAUL II
JOHN PAUL II was the first non Italian pope since 1523, whose energetic, active approach to his
office, unprecedented world travel, and firm religious conservatism have enhanced the importance
of the papacy in both the Roman Catholic church and the non Catholic world. The pope is also the
head of the independent state of VaticanCity.
Born Karol WojtyВіa on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland, he studied poetry and drama at the
University of KrakГіw. During World War II he worked in a stone quarry and in a chemical
factory while preparing for the priesthood. Ordained in 1946, he earned a doctorate in theology at

Despite recurrent health problems in the 1990s, John Paul maintained an active schedule. In
September 1993 he traveled to the Baltic republics, the first papal visit to countries of the
former Soviet Union. His journey to Lebanon in May 1997, to give his support to the Christian
minority and to heal religious divisions there, was followed by a visit to Brazil in October. On a
five day visit to Cuba in January 1998, he denounced U.S. trade sanctions against that country and
pressed Fidel Castro s government to release political prisoners and ease restrictions on religious
and political rights. He also pressed Nigeria on human rights issues during a three day visit two
months later; while there, John Paul beatified a Nigerian priest. Emphasizing a central theme of
John Paul s papacy, that of Jewish Christian reconciliation, the Vatican issued a statement in mid
March apologizing to Jews for the Church s failure to take decisive action against Nazi Germany;
the document received a mixed reception from Jewish groups, in part because it defended the
actions of Pope Pius XII during the Holocaust. Concerned with the mission of Roman Catholicism
in the Americas and the problem of increased Protestant proselytism in Latin America, the pope
visited Saint Louis, Mo., and Mexico City in January 1999. In June of that year, in the spirit of

The Most Enjoyable Activity For Children

For centuries, the most enjoyable activity for children to partake in is playing outside. Playing
outside develops fundamental social skills, engages all five senses, stimulates creativity and
imagination, and encourages cooperative play with others. Throughout the years, outside play has
become increasingly competitive. Now, every child is encouraged to sign up for competitive
sports teams as soon as they start going to school. Parents encourage these teams now instead of
sending their child into the backyard to explore on their own. In the aspect of staying healthy, this

Pan s Labyrinth As A Fairy Tale
Pan s Labyrinth was a fairytale that took place during the Spanish Civil war. This movie was a
good example of a fairytale for many different reasons. One reason why Pan s Labyrinth is a
good example of a fairy tale is because of the use of the fairytale characters: faun, fairy, and evil
human eating monster. In a fairytale is usually has unexpected monsters or creatures and this
movie has a bunch of mythical creatures. Another example of how Pan s Labyrinth is a good

with the army leader and the doctor alone. Interrogated him, and eventually killed him for doing

makes this movie a fairytale is the items that are used throughout the movie to change or alter the
outcome of events. In the beginning a stone was missing an eye, eventually the little girl found

Essay about Organization Structures
Organization Structures The mechanistic view of an organization began with the industrial
revolution. The view is a reflection of society s radical change from a rural agricultural base to
one more impersonally based on centralized urban industry employing great numbers of people.
The first changes began in the late 1600 s and early 1700 s with rudimentary machines replacing
manual labor or accomplishing things not previously possible because of size, weight, or sheer
numbers. The greatest industrial growth was during the 1800 s period, which was exponential at its
end and the outset of our century.

Mechanistic structures are designed to induce people to behave in predictable, accountable ways.
Decision making authority is centralized, subordinates are closely supervised, and information
flows mainly in a vertical direction down a clearly defined hierarchy. In a mechanistic structure the
tasks associated with a role are also clearly defined. There is usually a one to one correspondence
between a person and a task (figure 1 depicts this). Each person is individually specialized and
knows exactly what he or she is responsible for, and behavior inappropriate to the role is
discouraged or prohibited.
The mechanistic structure is the traditional or classical design, common in many medium and large
size organizations. Mechanistic organizations are somewhat rigid in that they consist of very
clearly delineated jobs, have a well defined hierarchical structure, and rely heavily on the formal
chain of command for control. Bureaucratic organizations, with their emphasis on formalization, are
the primary form of mechanistic structures. According to Max Weber, bureaucracyis a form of
organization characterized by a rational, goal directed hierarchy, impersonal decision making,
formal controls, and subdivision into managerial positions and specialization of labor. Bureaucratic
organizations are tall consisting of hierarchies with many levels of management. In a tall structure,

It can be assumed that due to his intensive lifestyle and lack of emotional expression, Mill
suffered from severe depression. In the midst of his depressive state, Mill began utilizing arts as
a way to explore his feelings, before overcoming his state (King et al., 2009). After establishing a
friendship with Harriet Taylor, Mill was able to express his emotions, while furthering his
intellectual work (King et al., 2009). Eventually, they married and Mill attributes much of his
philosophical work to Taylor (Schultz Schultz, 2011). The main themes of Mill s philosophical
life work, regarding the advancement of psychology, are centred utilitarianism (King et al.,
2009). As a result of the work of Jeremy Bentham, utilitarianism is regarded as a principle of
moral basis, which states that actions should provide the greatest good for the largest amount of
people (King, et al., 2009). However, Mill differed in his views of utilitarianism, focusing on the
consequences of an act and judging its worth based on the happiness it provides (Shiraev, 2011).
Futhermore, Shiraev (2011) describes Mill s view of utilitarianism as a basis for determining if
an action is correct, and if and only if, it affords pleasure for all who are influenced by the event.
Mill regarded only those individuals who were knowledgeable, as having the ability to decide
whether an action is in the best interest of all (Shiraev, 2011). In Mills book On Liberty , Mill
expounds his concept of individual freedom within the context of his ideas on history and the state.
On Liberty depends on the idea that society progresses from lower to higher stages and that this
progress culminates in the emergence of a system of representative democracy. It is within the
context of this form of government that Mill

When parents know the fetus is special , they may be chosen to terminate the pregnancy. Thus, in
general prenatal screening helps to detect congenital disabilities but is also thought to be the
remedy selective abortion (Seller, 1976).
One of the benefits of prenatal screening is to enable early detection of the developmental defect
embryology. This embryology developmental defect may be due to the mutation or genetic
inheritance. Mutation is a condition characterized by permanent change in the DNA sequence that
makes up a gene. It can range in different sizes from a single DNA building block (DNA base) to a
large segment of a chromosome. On the other hand, genetic inheritance is a condition whereby
parents pass traits such as height and other characteristics to the children by chromosomes.
Sonograms, genetic tests and a new test called pre implantation genetic diagnosis which is a genetic
test conducted on embryos for people attempting pregnancy through in vitro fertilization allow
women to better predict if the infant will have a genetic defect (New York Times Magazine, 2006).
Thus thorough these tests, medical practitioners are able to identify and make early preparation
toward any abnormalities of the fetus.
Besides that, prenatal screening also improves lives. This is because prenatal screening is able to

Melting Points Lab Report Essay
Melting Points
Elizabeth McGrail
Organic Chemistry I

ABSTRACT
The objectives of this lab are, as follows; to understand what occurs at the molecular level when a
substance melts; to understand the primary purpose of melting point data; to demonstrate the
technique for obtaining the melting point of an organic substance; and to explain the effect of
impurities on the melting point of a substance. Through the experimentation of three substances,
tetracosane, 1 tetradecanol and a mixture of the two, observations can be made in reference to
melting point concerning polarity, molecular weight and purity of the substance. When comparing
the two substances, it is evident that heavy molecule weight of tetracosane allowed ... Show more

Once the range is obtained, remove the thermometer and beaker. Pour out the hot water and allow
both the thermometer and the beaker to cool. Once cool, repeat the previous steps with the second
compound, tetradecanol. At the conclusion of the second experiment, repeat the steps for a third
and final time using an equal mixture of both compounds. Be sure to record the melting point range
for all three experiments. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
Melting point range for tetracosane: 49 51 degrees Celsius
Melting point range for 1 tetradecanol: 37 40 degrees Celsius
Melting point range for mixture: 34 37 degrees Celsius
I was instructed to record a melting point range for each compound, rather than a single temperature
melting point. The reason for this instruction is that polymers and unpure substance melt over a
range of several degrees. Based on the melting point ranges for both substances, it is difficult to
differentiate the two based on its melting point data alone. The ranges of the substances are close
enough to one another that one could argue for experimental error when presenting the data as a
solo identifying property.
Based on these conclusions, I do not believe the tetracosane is a pure substance because I observed
the compound melt over a range of degrees Celsius. If both compounds in the mixture were
composed of tetracosane, its melting point would be theoretically, identical to the melting

Emmanuel Kant Research Paper
Before critical theory was fully developed and defined, many philosophers played a part
influencing future thinkers in the way we critique reason, ourselves, society, and ultimately how we
can strive towards autonomy and freedom. These four German historical figures were: Emmanuel
Kant, J.G. Fichte, G.W.F. Hegel and Karl Marx. Emmanuel Kant was born in 1724 and died in
1804 in Konigsberg, Prussia. He was one of nine children and grew up in a strict religious
household. From the age of 16, Kant spent most of his years in life at the University of Konigsberg
as a student and completing his own research. As a youth, he studied philosophy, sciences, and the
works of Isaac Newton. Although Kant is known for his philosophical contributions, he made major
contribution to astronomy in the 1750 s and 60 s by theorizing about our solar system and the Earth
s rotation.
Kant became interested in the structure and limits to our own knowledge. Three critiques were

Assyrian Art Essay
Assyrian Art
The reliefs from the palace of King Assurnasirpal II at Nimrud play an important role in
portraying the power and importance of the Assyrian king. These reliefs are similar to other
Assyrian reliefs in terms of their purpose; however, there is a contrast in the methods used to
glorify the king. By examining such factors as style, iconography and historical significance, we
find many similarities and differences between the ceremonial reliefs and the more common reliefs
depicting war and hunting.
The reliefs belonging to the sacred or ceremonial category consist of panels depicting a sacred
tree, a human headed genius fertilizing a sacred tree, a griffin fertilizing a sacred tree, and a scene
of King Assurnasirpal (whose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In term of stylization, both the human headed deities and Assurnasirpal have very stylized hair
falling in straight locks to the back of their necks; furthermore, they possess highly stylized beards
of intricate waves and ringlets which end evenly at the bottom.
Because these features are similar to that of Assurbanipal and the mythological bullmen at the
palace at Khorsabad, it can be construed that it is a coiffure characteristic of royalty and divinity
alike (Art History Anthology 28).
Moving on to the facial expression, we find that all the human headed figures contain large
eyebrows, large eyes that are deeply undercut, an elongated nose, conventionalized ears, and highly
conventionalized lips which appear as a simple slit. On the other hand, the beardless griffin has an
eagle s head adorned with a feather headdress and a curved beak with a long tongue. To show the
strength of the deities and Assurnasirpal, the artist depicts muscles within the arms and legs through
simple lines and curves. This style of depicting the facial and body features is common in other
Assyrian reliefs including the hunting scenes of Assurbanipal.
Although there are many similarities in body structure, there is also a distinctive element that
separates the deities and the king. Each deity possesses a set of four highly stylized wings made up

How Do The Influences Affect Poe s Life
Edgar Allan Poe was born January 19th, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts. His father abandoned
him in 1810 and his mother died of tuberculosis the year after. He was taken in by John and
Frances Allan and grew up in Richmond, Virginia. He attended the University of Virginia for one
semester but dropped out due to lack of money. However, while there he made a name for himself
due to his high performance. He posted his first collection of poems while in the army but later
left the army, after being promoted to sergeant major status, to continue writing full time. He
married in 1835 in Baltimore to Virginia Clemm, his thirteen year old cousin. Ten years later Poe
published his poem The Raven, and it was an instant success. Two years after The Raven... Show

Before Poe died, Poe began to become progressively depressed and started drinking to a greater
extent. Subsequently, this led to the main characters of his poems to also be alcoholics. This is
shown in The Back Cat, where the narrator assaults a cat while he is drunk. This poem shows
how the narrator was overpowered from the alcohol, much like Poe was in some instances.
Alcohol is also shown in another of Poe s poems, The Cask of Amontillado, where the narrator is
kidnapped because his assailant was able to take advantage of him since he was drunk. Henceforth,
Poe s usage of alcohol shaped his writing style, by introducing the subject matter into his

Maya Angelo Essay
If I could have the honor of meeting that one person it would be Maya Angelo. She was an
inspirational and phenomenal woman of her decade. Not only was she an actress and poet, she
was a mother too. Maya Angelo was a beautiful black woman in her time that stood for what was
just. She experienced slavery, and even endured it. Her legacy and history is passed on through
many of her books like I know why the caged bird sings , or through her poems such as A raisin in
the sun and phenomenal woman.
Thanks to her tenacity and considerateness this younger generation that I am growing up in can
visit the past time and time again through her magnificent writings. Maya Angelo style of writing
was very different from the many black authors ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Her words always leave me in deep thought while stimulating my brain. Maya Angelo s readings
are full of advice and wisdom that comes from a woman who is three times my age. That s
priceless information, Right? I can remember when I was an even younger girl growing up in grade
school and in church. Every time there was a talent show or some major event where one would
have to stand in front of a crowd and prove themselves. I would always choose one of Maya
Angelo s sassy, tongue twisting poems that was sure to get the audience excited and involved.
One thing my sister and I were sure of was that choosing a selection by Ms. Angelo we couldn t
go wrong or embarrassed. In my opinion, Maya Angelo is a strong and witty African American
woman who blessed the world with her thoughts through different writing pieces. She is a role
model to me, because she speaks the truth. Maya Angelo has been the winner of the Noble Peace
Prize and is a renowned best selling author. I say ask anyone about her and they will know of her,
or at least her writings.
I would defiantly love the opportunity to meet Maya Angelo to really try and pick her brain. I
would ask her how she endured the hard times, or what her inspiration as a young woman
growing up was. I would even try and ease a few personal informal questions in such as, what did
you do for fun on a Friday night, or what was your dream career. I could only imagine how
delighted, encouraged and uplifted I would feel

  • 2. With Malice Toward None With Malice Toward None Essay In the history of the United States of America many men have made contributions to our nation, whether it be small or large. Our founding fathers John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and George Washington helped give birth to our nation by successfully guiding us through a revolution and our country s infancy. Franklin D Roosevelt led the nation through a war on two fronts eventually defeating the Axis powers of Nazi Germany and Japan. The list could go on and on about legendary men that made important contributions to the United Statesof America, however one man that seems to always come out on top of all these men is none other than our sixteenth president Abraham Lincoln. This man guided a nation through a Civil War that saw six hundred and twenty thousand people die. Signed the Emancipation Proclamation declaring that all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states are, and henceforward shall be free. And gave one of the most famous speeches in American history with is Gettysburg Address. The amount of things Lincoln accomplished in his lifetime could go on and on, but one thing is for certain he was one of the greatest Americans to ever live. However what type of man was Lincoln? Noble? Driven? Stephen B Oates gives us the best interoperation of the man Lincoln really was in his book With Malice Toward None. Lyon 2 From the beginning Oates describes Lincoln as ... Data organized by age reveals significant problems when it comes to groups who are uninsured, we can see a stark contrast between age groups. Among the 15.7% of Americans that are uninsured, approximately 55.2% of those are comprised of Americans aged 19 to 34 years of age. This is relatively unsurprising as young people have always been less likely to purchase health insurance as the result of what many have described as some sort of invincibility complex. Wrights expressions and ideas correspond to the events that occurred in the noveland I consider my thoughts compatible with fulfillment. The short story, How Bigger Was Born , is the foundation of the character Bigger Thomas and his told life. In How Bigger Was Born , Wright tells of a memory he has of something he once read. Lenin turned to Gorky and, pointing, said Here is their Big Ben. There is their Westminster Abbey. There is their library (page 5 paragraph 6). The significance of this memory is to demonstrate that the two men felt as though there were not living in a world of their own, they felt they were just a part of someone else s universe. This supports the novel because Bigger has similar feelings to the two men in Wright s memory. In a discussion between Bigger and Gus, they are talking about life and wondering what it would be like to not live on their side of the line. • 7. Race And Social Class Inequality Essay Race+Social Class+Economic Class=Value? As shown throughout history, race and social class have played a large role in determining people s values this is based on the specific culture and the societal values fostered by their environment. In the case of the United States, as a result of the enslavement of people of color, white people were seen to have the most value . The higher up socio economically white people were, the more they were considered valuable. In the 1920 s, racismwas still enforced by laws (such as Jim Crow) and this idea of blackness correlating with no value was emphasized by society through segregation and stigma stemming from slavery. One way that people of color went around their raceduring this time period to escape the prejudice that correlated was through the method of passing as white. This method and its implications can be seen in Nella Larsens Passing through looking at the characters Irene Redfield and Clare Kendry, who mobilize themselves on each side of the color line. In the novel, Irene and Clare have very different reasons for passing Irene passes for convenience, while Clare passes to alter her lifestyle and identity completely. It could be confidence or trust in a person or thing, or belief in God or in the doctrines or teachings of religion, or belief in anything, as a code of ethics, standards of merit, fidelity, etc. There are plenty of different definitions, but what they all have in common is the idea of believing. Belief is what guides us through life, having faithis essential and brings good to our lives. It s the love medicine, my Lipsha, she said. It was stronger than we thought. He came back even after death to claim me to his side. (Erdrich, P. 296). Due to humans inability to perceive this gas CO it is commonly referred to as silent killer. Inhalation of CO is the leading cause of accidental deaths in the United States. Excluding deaths caused by fires, there are around 2,700 deaths as a result of carbon monoxide poisoning annually. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that around 450 deaths are caused by accidental CO toxicity every year. While the total number of deaths seems low, an estimated 50,000 people in America visit the emergency hospital departments showing signs of CO poisoning. Exposure to CO results ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It causes death by the CO binding rapidly to the haemoglobin (Hb) resulting in the carboxyhemoglobin (COHb) formation. As a result, the blood s oxygen carrying capacity is reduced leading to tissue hypoxia (Chand Meena, 2014). The presence of COHb changes the Hb s oxygen affinity by altering oxyhemoglobin dissociation reducing the oxygen delivered to the tissues, leading to tissue hypoxia. More importantly, other oxygen carrying hemeproteins such as cytochrome P 450, myoglobin, and cytochrome c oxidase also compete with oxygen for binding sites (Caughey, 1970). It has been demonstrated that cytochrome oxidase oxygen affinity causes impairment of mitochondrial respiration. Even though the level of COHb is a vital clinical measure of carbon monoxide exposure, the most crucial mechanism by which carbon monoxide causes toxicity is its combination with cytochrome oxidase. In addition, carbon monoxide may produce toxicity by binding to myoglobin causing impairment of the cardiac output and leading to cerebral ischemia. The dissociation of carboxymyoglobin is slower compared to COHb because of CO s increased affinity for myoglobin (Myers, Linberg, Cowley, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Detection Of Optic Disc Location Automatic Detection of optic disc location in Color Fundus Retinal Images Using Circle Operator Abstract In this work a method is proposed to detect optic disk (OD) automatically in color retinal fundus image without using background mask and blood vessels. Based on the properties of OD, an idea of circle operator is presented here. This method has been applied on six public databases and the promising results are obtained. The experimental results indicate that this proposed method of automatic OD detection has good accuracy and is also time efficient. In modern ophthalmology, detection of optic disk is a very important step for retinal image analysis. It is one of the main feature of extracting the anatomical structure of the retina as illustrated in Fig. 1(a). Optic disk can be defined as the circular brighter region in retinal fundus image where blood vessels converge and optic nerve is formed. OD detection is very indispensable for the computer aided diagnosis of different eye diseases such as glaucoma detection and diabetic retinopathy [1]. Fig. 1(b) represents the fundus image with retinal lesion. Many optic disc detection methods have been proposed ear lier. In [4] [6], image brightness based methods are proposed. In these methods it is expected that the OD usually resembles according to the brightest pixels within fundus images. Tochia Hendrix Jordan 6 February 2016 Romance Embodied through Figurative Language in Taylor Swift s Red The song Red was written and recorded by famed singer/songwriter Taylor Swift for her album of the same name. It is a song that is full of figurative speech; the songstress makes use of similes, metaphors, and imagery. These three techniques work together to convey the many emotions the singer feels when she looks back at the end of relationship. Red is a song that is about remembering a relationship and thinking about the emotions good or bad that it brought on. The first two lines of the song, Loving him is like driving a new Maserati down a dead end street /Faster than the wind, passionate as sin, ending so suddenly, provide an example of how Swift uses similes in this song. The artist is writing about how passionate, wild and reckless this progressing relationship was, even though it eventually came to an abrupt halt. Swift again makes use of the simile when she writes, Loving him is like trying to change your mind once you re already flying through the free fall. Preoedipal and oedipal issues appear to be at the root of many of these problems (Sours, 1980; Schulman, 2002). Sours (1980), one of the first theorists to study the role that oedipal and preoedipal issues played in eating disorders, noted that his anorexic patients demonstrated separation anxieties as well as fear of control. Additional research offers confirmatory evidence that oedipal and preoedipal issues are salient for women with bulimia (Sperling, 1978; Wilson, 1992; Schulman, 2002). Therefore, bulimia nervosa(BN) can appropriately be conceptualized as reflecting both oedipal and preoedipal pathology, depending on the individual s central conflicts. With the unmistakable need to restore financial specialist trust in the securities market President Roosevelt pushed for a huge securities regulation and the creation of the Securities Act of 1933 sprouted along with the approval of Congress. Then in a year later in 1934 Congress observed the need to make modifications to the 1933 Act by establishing an independent governmental regulatory body the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC main responsibility came to be to ensure and protect the public against malpractices in the securities and financial markets. Each team has six players and one goalie on the court at one time. Each player has protective gear like helmets and pads. They also have a hockey stick that they use to hit the puck into the goal. The goalie s gear is a little different than the players. The goalie has very thick pads that cover his entire body, a large helmet, and a hockey stick. The Dangers of Shirking Responsibility in Arthur Miller s All My Sons Arthur Miller s All My Sons is a well made play in every sense of that term. It not only is carefully and logically constructed, but addresses its themes fully and effectively. The play communicates different ideas on war, materialism, family, and honesty. However, the main focus, especially at the play s climax, is the issue of personal responsibility. In particular, Miller demonstrates the dangers of shirking responsibility and, then, ascribing blame to others. Nearly every character in All My Sons, in one way or another, fails to take responsibility. The Keller family, as a whole, is severely dysfunctional in that they keep secrets and ... The truth, when revealed at the end, really is more than he can live with. When others recognize what he has known in his heart all along, Joe kills himself. As mentioned above, All My Sons is not just about the failure to be responsible; it is about blaming others for one s own wrongs, that includes giving responsibility to another for one s own life. Upon my recent visit to New York City, I could easily see that the line for the virtual city ride at the Empire State building was much longer than that for the observation deck. This mania for visual experience has taken over, increasing our conviction in what we see as what is, despite their crucial differences. Yet, this is no newfound novelty. The human tendency to take things at their face value is ancient and persisting. This excessive dependence on visual stimulation has led to an excessive false belief in the falsity of appearances; a belief that causes the casual classification of people that is so rigid and narrow in its function that failure to fit into them results in losing one s sense of identity, even when identity is itself such a fluid and complex concept. I have always contended that human beings have a tendency to classify what we experience into categories and assign them with labels. Each person is individually specialized and knows exactly what he or she is responsible for, and behavior inappropriate to the role is discouraged or prohibited. As a result of the work of Jeremy Bentham, utilitarianism is regarded as a principle of moral basis, which states that actions should provide the greatest good for the largest amount of people (King, et al., 2009). However, Mill differed in his views of utilitarianism, focusing on the consequences of an act and judging its worth based on the happiness it provides (Shiraev, 2011). Futhermore, Shiraev (2011) describes Mill s view of utilitarianism as a basis for determining if an action is correct, and if and only if, it affords pleasure for all who are influenced by the event. Mill regarded only those individuals who were knowledgeable, as having the ability to decide whether an action is in the best interest of all (Shiraev, 2011). RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Melting point range for tetracosane: 49 51 degrees Celsius Melting point range for 1 tetradecanol: 37 40 degrees Celsius Melting point range for mixture: 34 37 degrees Celsius I was instructed to record a melting point range for each compound, rather than a single temperature melting point. The reason for this instruction is that polymers and unpure substance melt over a range of several degrees. Based on the melting point ranges for both substances, it is difficult to differentiate the two based on its melting point data alone. The ranges of the substances are close enough to one another that one could argue for experimental error when presenting the data as a solo identifying property. Based on these conclusions, I do not believe the tetracosane is a pure substance because I observed the compound melt over a range of degrees Celsius. If both compounds in the mixture were composed of tetracosane, its melting point would be theoretically, identical to the melting ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Emmanuel Kant Research Paper Before critical theory was fully developed and defined, many philosophers played a part influencing future thinkers in the way we critique reason, ourselves, society, and ultimately how we can strive towards autonomy and freedom. These four German historical figures were: Emmanuel Kant, J.G. Fichte, G.W.F. Hegel and Karl Marx. Emmanuel Kant was born in 1724 and died in 1804 in Konigsberg, Prussia. He was one of nine children and grew up in a strict religious household. From the age of 16, Kant spent most of his years in life at the University of Konigsberg as a student and completing his own research. As a youth, he studied philosophy, sciences, and the works of Isaac Newton. Although Kant is known for his philosophical contributions, he made major contribution to astronomy in the 1750 s and 60 s by theorizing about our solar system and the Earth s rotation. Kant became interested in the structure and limits to our own knowledge. Three critiques were written between 1781 and 1790: Critique of Pure Reason, Critique of ... • 39. Assyrian Art Essay Assyrian Art The reliefs from the palace of King Assurnasirpal II at Nimrud play an important role in portraying the power and importance of the Assyrian king. These reliefs are similar to other Assyrian reliefs in terms of their purpose; however, there is a contrast in the methods used to glorify the king. By examining such factors as style, iconography and historical significance, we find many similarities and differences between the ceremonial reliefs and the more common reliefs depicting war and hunting. The reliefs belonging to the sacred or ceremonial category consist of panels depicting a sacred tree, a human headed genius fertilizing a sacred tree, a griffin fertilizing a sacred tree, and a scene of King Assurnasirpal (whose ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In term of stylization, both the human headed deities and Assurnasirpal have very stylized hair falling in straight locks to the back of their necks; furthermore, they possess highly stylized beards of intricate waves and ringlets which end evenly at the bottom. Because these features are similar to that of Assurbanipal and the mythological bullmen at the palace at Khorsabad, it can be construed that it is a coiffure characteristic of royalty and divinity alike (Art History Anthology 28). Moving on to the facial expression, we find that all the human headed figures contain large eyebrows, large eyes that are deeply undercut, an elongated nose, conventionalized ears, and highly conventionalized lips which appear as a simple slit. On the other hand, the beardless griffin has an eagle s head adorned with a feather headdress and a curved beak with a long tongue. To show the strength of the deities and Assurnasirpal, the artist depicts muscles within the arms and legs through simple lines and curves. This style of depicting the facial and body features is common in other Assyrian reliefs including the hunting scenes of Assurbanipal. Although there are many similarities in body structure, there is also a distinctive element that separates the deities and the king. Each deity possesses a set of four highly stylized wings made up of very detailed ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
