1. Contextual Script
Written by George Wetton
With the exception of my pre-proposal. The first part of my FMP will
be looking into some contextual research. Just so I can get the
general basis of the genre that I am looking into and look into the
people that have perfected some route into having some involvement
in the horror media. I tried to go through different professions
that would benefit in me in the end as opposed to just studying five
directors. I decided to choose a director, script writer, graphic
designer, a company, and a film. This shows that I am keeping my
options to other routes that interest me. Picking a film that has
inspired me and then looking further into that by seeing the camera
techniques that were applied on it with such a small budget. Which
is similar to my project.
Looking into the directors Alfred Hitchcock and Tim Burton were
especially beneficial when looking into how my final product will
look like on film. I don’t want it look as bleak as and as
depressing as the Tim burton films but I do want it to have that
gothic style that he aimed to portray with hints of comedy. So, you
know the type of film that you are watching. This is mostly done
through the dark cinematography, but it is also being empathised
with costumes and with just how the characters react. I didn’t know
that I wanted this was the particular theme that I needed until I
created it, but it is the one that makes the most sense. Alfred
Hitchcock has also influenced me as well. Having looked briefly at
his films. He was really ahead of his time on being reliant on the
suspense of the films. As opposed to the jump scares in the film. If
you watch his films. There isn’t really much scary stuff happening
apart from the situations that he has placed these characters in.
Which I suppose makes it more believable. As there are no
supernatural threats thrown in to scare anyone. Graphic design was
another avenue which I decided to look further upon. As I am making
a film poster. I felt like had to look more into the artist behind
the art. I’ve seen a lot of artwork that I admire, and I do have
specific artists such as Paul Rand, Saul Bass and Alan Fletcher.
Whenever I look at their work, they all have a collective style
which makes their piece recognisable to them, meaning it looks like
something they made. However, I have never researched how they have
got into their position of being an artist and what inspired them.
So that was a very beneficial insight into a profession that I want
to take when I’m older.
I also went as far as to look into the film-based company A24. They
were a starting company that got founded in 2012 and since then they
have produced many different films. With most of them being horror.
Examples being ‘Midsomer’ (2018) and ‘Hereditary’ (2019). Looking
into seeing how the business work and what impact they have had with
2. the advertising of the film. I found t be a rather interesting
insight.
Overall, my contextual has been an insightful stepping look into the
works of creators that have been such a success today. It has put
helped me in being brough into the right direction and for something
that I should be getting influenced in the future when doing my pre-
production. It has already got me thinking about cinemaphotography
and colour palettes for how the overall location is going to look.
