Contextual Research video (Script)
1. Contextual Script
Written by George Wetton
Today I will be going through the importance of the roles of being a
director, producer, a graphic designer, a film, and of course
established company. The first thing I looked over however was the
various methods when it comes to using a piece of equipment on
set and everything else that is built around the scene. Whether this
was through a camera shot or the things that build up the scene like
the costume/props. The first director that I had took a look at
first was Tim burton because his dark gothic style was something
that I wanted to replicate with the added uses of comedy in the fil
the most interesting thing I found when researching him was the many
different elements in his life that had inspired him in his life.
Such as the drawing when he was a child inspiring him to make the
character of Edward Scissorhands and having a lot of influences when
growing up. With Vincent Price being a big one. When analysing these
people. I looked through their backgrounds. Any small minor details
whether its hinting to something or something else. This will show
you why these directors have their chosen themes and why they been
so successful because something will have been needed to inspire
them whilst they are building their career. Looking through various
patterns. It gives them that element of being unique and creating
their own world. I had also dedicated a slide of quotes to each
person I looked at because I feel like this is where their
personalities come out the most and you can really see who they are
trying be or what messaging they are trying to get across. For
Burton its that feeling of being weird and the odd one out. For
Raimi it’s the practical usage of making a film and how you don’t
need big budget ones in order for it to be good. The messages come
through best in the quotes that can be found in interviews. Another
person who I had looked at was Jordan Peele. He had a particular
interesting carer because he started into comedy and has lately
adapted into more serious work of working on horror films. This
writer however was bit more difficult to research because he didn’t
have a massive legacy and is still working towards getting horror
films out like ‘Candyman’. Another director that I looked at was
Alfred Hitchcock, his films were a lot older than the previous
people that I looked at. Earning himself the title ‘the master of
suspense’. His films relied a lot less on jump scares and more
acting that was placed into the dialogue. By looking at this
different variety I have been able to compare the different ages in
which horror seemed to fit. John Alvin is another person that I
looked at. His profession is a graphic designer, and he has created
many different film posters. I feel like seen as I am doing some
poster work. It will be beneficial to look into people who have
alternative roles. Whilst I know a few digital artists. I haven’t
looked into them in closer detail. As well as this I am in the
position of being a young graphic designer. Whilst I am more of a
2. freelancer as I am not working for an actual company. Finding out
how Alvin got into the role. I found it to be very inspiring.
I also picked a film company into which I could research. I picked
A24 because they are mostly associated with horror films and have
worked on such projects like ‘Midsommer’ and ‘Hereditary’. Straight
away I was already surprised at how early the business was
established with it opening up in August 2012. Showing how it come
in a short amount of time. The final thing which I looked into was
the film ‘evil dead’ this was originally intended to be a student
film, but the budget was raised, and investors wanted to see more.
In the finical stages I break down the various ways in which the
camera movements were created and what cheap practical effects were
used. This gave me an insight as to what I could do with my project.
Bearing in mind that I have a smaller budget.
Overall, my contextual was an insightful overview as to what themes
I can place in my story. As well as gathering up enough information
that will help my project experiment on something that has worked
and been done before. However, I do have to be fitting originality
into the story too.
