Research
As a part of my research, I thought up the names of some of the podcasts and radio
shows that I regularly listen to and searched for similar ones that could be used as
inspiration. Once found, I picked them apart and began looking at the different
elements of each show and took note on how they are built up (microphones,
headphones, scripted/unscripted, news, etc) and thought about how they could be
integrated into my project and how they could be made to work together. The
strengths of my research were that I was able to grab a foothold on what things I
wanted in my show. I could begin to experiment with what went well and what went
not so well together.
The weaknesses of this research is that it did not necessarily give me any fresh ideas
and the features and thoughts I came up with gave an extremely similar resemblance
to features on shows that already exist. Few of the ideas were new and it felt almost
recycled in some cases.
To tackle this obstacle, I could have used the information I had gathered a bit better
and tried to create a whole new idea. This would help keep a ‘new’ feel to my show
and could appeal to a bigger audience as it would have bared a resemblance to
existing popular features and shows as well as being new and inventive.
Planning
The strength of my planning was that I was able to set a time to finish certain
parts of the project due to knowing exactly what I had to do. It helped me get
everything together and made it easier for me to find what I had to add or
change next.
The weaknesses of my planning were that I didn’t go into enough detail on
the specifics of the show (features, etc) so it ended up being more improvised
than planned. This made the show end up sounding more amateur.
To improve my planning, I would make sure that I include more detail and give
it more of a structure so that I don’t end up confusing myself and making
changes that impact the plan in a negative way. Next time, I need to make
sure that I am happy with what I have planned out so that I do not end up
going on a tangent.
If I’d have done what I stated above, I would have stuck to the plan more and
been more to the point with the recording sessions.
Time Management
I feel that I could have managed my time a bit better. I found myself having to
rush parts of the projects every once in a while due to poorly managed time.
The schedule was wasted in a way because I did not learn of it until a few
days in. Even then, I did not stick to it properly therefor in the next project, I
will make sure that I do.
I believe that my project would have increased in quality given more time
because there were various different features that I had in mind but could not
add due to having less than sufficient time such as interviews for the news
section to make the stories feel more real, interviews with 'artists' and maybe
even an interactive section where people could 'phone in' and play along with
games or request songs.
Technical Qualities
Similarities:
• My product has weird and bizzare stories in it and goes in to detail about
the event(s) as does the podcast that i took some inspiration from (The
Joe Rogan Experience Podcast)
• My product has a way for listeners to 'contact' the show in more than
one way and submit song requests or reactions to the news given by the
presenter(s). This feature took inspiration from all of the breakfast shows
of our time that promote radio to audience communication.
Differences:
• My product only gives the news and does not talk about them as the Joe
Rogan Podcast would. They would give the story then talk about it,
giving each other's personal opinions on the matter and arguing their
point. The podcast also talks about personal stories/updates which my
product does not do.
• My product doesn't actually have anyone phoning in to the show - it just
gives the number to call/text whereas the breakfast shows have
frequent calls and requests. Mine did not include any communication
with the audience.
Aesthetic Qualities
Overall, i would say my product sounds rather well made. I have used plenty of
tools and skills that i have learnt along the way which have helped increase the
realistic feel of the show. I have used cutting tools to add in small parts of tracks
that I thought fitted rather well at certain points, fading tools to create as much a
smooth transition as possible between songs, pitch changing to make small
sections of songs sound correlated with others that are incoming (also was used
to change my voice towards the beginning), and also looping tools for when the
news was in progress to gain that original news feeling. If i could improve
anything with my product's sound design, i would attempt to make the transition
between the presenter and the start of the mix work together better because,
listening back at it now, the presenter's voice seems to almost be cut off before
moving on the mix. This is also a re-occuring problem in a couple of the other
files in the mix when transitioning. I would improve these simply by spending
more time on them. Things like this could easily be fixed with the correct amount
of certain tools being used: it just takes time for that perfect blend to be found.
Audience Appeal
In the end, I feel like i began to stray from my target audience a bit and started going
on a tangent. However, the bits that would appeal to my target audience would
definitely be the news section and also the type of music played. In my proposal, I talk
about how my target audience would be laid back people who like some comedy. I
feel that my product ticks both of those boxes with the stories used on the news and
the music choices. The music is mainly older but is light hearted and up-beat, giving
the listener a happy and peaceful vibe.
In my questionnaire, i found that most people do not like talkative presenters on their
ideal shows and instead prefer it when the presenter is more to the point so i made
sure not to ramble too much and got straight to the parts that would matter to the
audience: the news and music. I also made sure not to include anything to do with
radio dramas as, again, most people disliked them.
As shown by the answers on my questionnaire, most of my audience is in the age
group of 16-20. Because of this, i ensured that the stories given in the news were
funny or had an odd tone to them because i know from myself what that particular
generation prefers.
Peer
Feedback
Feedback 1
• What did you like about the product?
– The music in the mix was good.
– The stories on the news section were interesting.
• What improvements could have been made to
the product?
– Make the news stories more to the point and
shorter.
Feedback 2
• What did you like about the product?
– The style of the vocal delivery was well paced and clear.
The editing was also very smooth with great transitions
and overall it produced a very professional production
• What improvements could have been made to the
product?
• Use of other people in the interviews or stories would
have livened up the delivery and also interview Q&A
with call ins or a studio visit inviting the public to
comment online and respond to the stories would
make the radio show more current, overall the content
was good but could have had more variety
Feedback 3
• What did you like about the product?
– It appealed to the audience well enough to attract
more people in.
– It had a nice blend of comedic parts and music.
What improvements could have been made to the
product?
– It could have included more modern music.
– The news stories could have been shortened to
get the most important parts of the news in less
time.
Peer Feedback Summary
• What do you agree with from your peer
feedback?
– That I should add more of an interview into the
project with other people to give it more life.
– That i should shorten the news stories to get the
point across without boring the listeners.
• What do you disagree with from your peer
feedback?
– I feel that the mix and sound files could have been
blended and transitioned better than they said it
was .
Peer Feedback Summary
Based on my feedback, i would make the following changes:
• The news section as a whole needs to be shortened so it
can keep the listener's attention and not go off on a
tangent.
• I will use other people or a voice changing tool to
simulate an interview with a person related to the stories
on the news to give it more 'life'. Also have a 'call in'
section to make the whole thing seem more realistic.
• Adding more variety into the show so it isn't just a plain
product with no new or innovative aspects to it.

I have used cutting tools to add in small parts of tracks that I thought fitted rather well at certain points, fading tools to create as much a smooth transition as possible between songs, pitch changing to make small sections of songs sound correlated with others that are incoming (also was used to change my voice towards the beginning), and also looping tools for when the news was in progress to gain that original news feeling. If i could improve anything with my product's sound design, i would attempt to make the transition between the presenter and the start of the mix work together better because, listening back at it now, the presenter's voice seems to almost be cut off before moving on the mix. This is also a re-occuring problem in a couple of the other files in the mix when transitioning. I would improve these simply by spending more time on them. Things like this could easily be fixed with the correct amount of certain tools being used: it just takes time for that perfect blend to be found.
  • 8. Audience Appeal In the end, I feel like i began to stray from my target audience a bit and started going on a tangent. However, the bits that would appeal to my target audience would definitely be the news section and also the type of music played. In my proposal, I talk about how my target audience would be laid back people who like some comedy. I feel that my product ticks both of those boxes with the stories used on the news and the music choices. The music is mainly older but is light hearted and up-beat, giving the listener a happy and peaceful vibe. In my questionnaire, i found that most people do not like talkative presenters on their ideal shows and instead prefer it when the presenter is more to the point so i made sure not to ramble too much and got straight to the parts that would matter to the audience: the news and music. I also made sure not to include anything to do with radio dramas as, again, most people disliked them. As shown by the answers on my questionnaire, most of my audience is in the age group of 16-20. Because of this, i ensured that the stories given in the news were funny or had an odd tone to them because i know from myself what that particular generation prefers.
  • 10. Feedback 1 • What did you like about the product? – The music in the mix was good. – The stories on the news section were interesting. • What improvements could have been made to the product? – Make the news stories more to the point and shorter.
  • 11. Feedback 2 • What did you like about the product? – The style of the vocal delivery was well paced and clear. The editing was also very smooth with great transitions and overall it produced a very professional production • What improvements could have been made to the product? • Use of other people in the interviews or stories would have livened up the delivery and also interview Q&A with call ins or a studio visit inviting the public to comment online and respond to the stories would make the radio show more current, overall the content was good but could have had more variety
  • 12. Feedback 3 • What did you like about the product? – It appealed to the audience well enough to attract more people in. – It had a nice blend of comedic parts and music. What improvements could have been made to the product? – It could have included more modern music. – The news stories could have been shortened to get the most important parts of the news in less time.
  • 13. Peer Feedback Summary • What do you agree with from your peer feedback? – That I should add more of an interview into the project with other people to give it more life. – That i should shorten the news stories to get the point across without boring the listeners. • What do you disagree with from your peer feedback? – I feel that the mix and sound files could have been blended and transitioned better than they said it was .
  • 14. Peer Feedback Summary Based on my feedback, i would make the following changes: • The news section as a whole needs to be shortened so it can keep the listener's attention and not go off on a tangent. • I will use other people or a voice changing tool to simulate an interview with a person related to the stories on the news to give it more 'life'. Also have a 'call in' section to make the whole thing seem more realistic. • Adding more variety into the show so it isn't just a plain product with no new or innovative aspects to it.
