Ethics
• The historical value shall be remain
• Maintain the authenticity
• Broken or half-decayed original work is of infinitely more value
than the smartest and most perfect new work.
• Projects should not be undertaken by persons who are
insufficiently trained or experienced unless they obtain sufficient
training and advice.
• Proper finance must be granted
• It is recognized that some projects are unique.
• In such cases, any intervention must be governed by allowing due
respect for the aesthetic, historical and physical integrity of the
cultural property.
Ethics of Conservation
1) Before introducing any intervention, the condition of the building must be documented.
2) Historic evidence, if available must not be destroyed, falsified or removed, without full
documentation.
3) Any intervention must be to the minimum extent.
4) All interventions must be fully documented and made available for future conservators.
5) Any proposed intervention should be:
a) Reversible if possible.
b) Not prejudice future interventions should these be necessary.
c) Not hinder access to all the evidence incorporated in the object.
d) Allow the maximum original material to be retained.
e) Harmonious in colour, tone, texture, form and scale if additions are necessary while
being less noticeable than the original material while at the same time being identified to
an expert.

Consciousness towards authenticity
• It may be pointed out that the best conservation often involves the least work and can be
inexpensive
• The conservation should involve the least possible physical intervention.
• The cultural significance of a monument must be retained
• Provision must also be made for its security, maintenance and future.
• The cultural significance of a monument is not impaired
• No conservation work should be undertaken unless adequate resources are available
• While conserving a monument, all aspects of its cultural significance be taken into account
• An appropriate visual setting e.g. form, scale, colour, texture and materials in a monument be
maintained
• No new construction, demolition or modification which would adversely affect the original
setting should be allowed
• All the disciplines of conservation may be used which can contribute to the study and
safeguarding of a monument.
• Techniques employed must be traditional
