CONNECTIVE
TISSUE
TISSUES
In advanced multicellular organisms same cells are
organised into tissues .it is an organisational level
b/w cell and a complete organ a tissue can be
defined as a group of similar cells and their
extracellular matrix form the same origin that
together carry out a specific function .organs are
then formed by the functional grouping together of
multiple tissues
TYPE OF TISSUES
1. Epithelial tissue
2 . CONNECTIVE TISSUE
3 . Muscular tissue
4 . Nervous tissue
JOHANNES PETER MULLER
The term "connective tissue"
(in German, Bindegewebe)
was introduced in 1830 by
Johannes Peter Müller. The
tissue was already recognized
as a distinct class in the 18th
century.
CONNECTIVE TISSUE
Connective tissue is the most widespread and diverse tissue
DEFINITION:
“Connective tissue are a group of tissue which connect or binds
other tissue in the body”
Connective tissue
“Connective tissue is a biological tissue that is important
in supporting ,connecting or separating different type of
tissue and organs in the body. All connective tissue is
made up of cells fibers and extracellular matrix .there are
different type of connective tissue with different function”
NOTE
The composition and structure of extracellular matrix
determines function and character of connective tissue
EXTRACELLULAR MATTER
Cells ,protein fibers ,ground substances are collectively called
extracellular matter
1. Cells
2. protein fibers
3. Ground substances
cont…..
The connective tissue includes several type
of fibrous tissue that vary only in their
density and cellulaties as well as more
specialized and recognizable variants
Group of tissue in the body that maintain
the form of the body and its organs and
provides cohesion and internal support
Function of connective tissues
Protection
Structural support
Connection and binding
Storage
Transport
Immune function
FUNCTION OF CONNECTIVE TISSUE
= Enclosing and separating organs
= connecting tissues to one another(ligament and tendons)
= supporting and moving(joints and cartilage)
= storing(adipose tissue and bones)
= cushioning and insulation (adipose tissue)
= transport and protection(blood)
= protection(cranium and sternum)
Characteristics of connective tissue
● more matrics than cell
* vascular
* can replicate(healing and repair)
* is not present on free surface or body cavities
* innervated
1.Connective tissue proper
Loose connective tissue is a category of connective
tissue which includes areolar tissue, reticular tissue,
and adipose tissue. Loose connective tissue is the
most common type of connective tissue in vertebrates.
It holds organs in place and attaches epithelial tissue to
other underlying tissues
Divided into 3;
1.areolar
2.adipose
3.reticular
.
Dense connective tissue, also called dense fibrous
tissue, is a type of connective tissue with fibers as its
main matrix element. ... Dense connective tissue forms
strong, rope-like structures such as tendons and
ligaments. Tendons attach skeletal muscles to bones;
ligaments connect bones to bones at joints.
Divided into 3;
1.regular
2.irregular
3. elastic

AREOLAR CONNECTIVE TISSUE
Areolar connective tissue holds organs in place and attaches epithelial tissue to other underlying tissues. It also serves
as a reservoir of water and salts for surrounding tissues. Almost all cells obtain their nutrients from and release their wastes
into areolar connective tissue.
Location. The areolar tissue is found beneath the dermis layer and is also underneath the epithelial tissue of all the body
systems that have external openings.
Function=Areolar connective tissue holds organs in place and attaches epithelial tissue to other underlying tissues. It also
serves as a reservoir of water and salts for surrounding tissues. Almost all cells obtain their nutrients from and release
their wastes into areolar connective tissue.

ADIPOSE CONNECTIVE TISSUE
Adipose tissue is a specialized connective tissue consisting of lipid-rich cells called adipocytes. As it comprises
about 20-25% of total body weight in healthy individuals, the main function of adipose tissue is to store energy in the
form of lipids (fat).
Definition: A type of specialized connective tissue...
Types: Depending on location; parietal fat and ...
Function: Energy storing, hormone production, ...
Structure: Adipocytes (white, brown and beige); ...

2.SUPPORTING CONNECTIVE TISSUE
a.CARTILAGE b.BONE
- This is a flexible connective tissue found in many areas in the bodies of
humans and other animals , including the joints b/w bones ,the rib cage
,the ear,the nose,the elbow, the knee, the angle,the bronchial tube,and
the intervertebral discs
- Cartilage is composed of specialized cells called chondroblasts and
,unlike other connective tissues,cartilage does not contain blood vessels
- Cartilage is classified into 3;
- 1.elastic cartilage
- 2.hyaline cartilage
- 3.fibrocartilage
- Which differ in the relative amounts of these 3 main components
a. CARTILAGE
b.BONE
a.BLOOD
3.FLUID CONNECTIVE TISSUE
b.LYMPH
Fluid Connective Tissue
Blood and lymph are fluid connective tissues. Cells circulate in a liquid extracellular matrix. The formed elements
circulating in blood are all derived from hematopoietic stem cells located in bone marrow
