Miss Zuleika Winfrey
Simple Definition
• Communication between two or more people
via any kind of electronic device.
Transmission
• There are two methods of transmitting computer-
mediated communication.
• These two methods are known as synchronous and
asynchronous transmissions.
• Synchronous communication happens in real-time.
• Asynchronous communication occurs in delayed
time.
Benefits
• Communication may continue regardless of time or
geographical location.
• CMC allows users anywhere to collaborate with each
other.
• It gives intimidated groups the opportunity to
participate in communication (e.g. Introverts & people
with special needs)
• This kind of communication can be very economical for
individuals, learning institutions, businesses and
governments.
• For example: Web-conferencing is cheaper than flying
employees to another country for a meeting.
Challenges
• Many forms of CMC do not cater to non-verbal cues
such as facial expressions, body gestures and tone of
voice.
• Because of this, CMC often leaves room for
misinterpretation.
• Vulnerable users may be at higher risk of danger (e.g.
kidnapping, theft, stalking, robbery, drugs)
