This document summarizes a study on the computational analysis of heat sinks using finite element analysis. Heat sinks with different fin configurations were modeled and analyzed using ANSYS Fluent software to evaluate heat transfer characteristics. The results were validated by comparing with previous studies and analytical solutions. Key findings include that increasing the number of fins and base-to-ambient temperature difference leads to higher convective heat transfer. An optimum fin spacing was identified that balances heat transfer and pressure drop, and this agreed with results from other studies. In conclusion, finite element analysis was found to be an effective method for evaluating heat transfer in heat sinks with different parameters.

Abstract The requirement of energy in any processing industry is not only a need but it is indeed a most wanted utility. In a typical processing or manufacturing industry the most common utility are steam and cooling water. However the cost of these utility are no longer cheap, in fact they are expensive. Therefore saving these utility or minimizing the usage of these utilities is one of the most needed practice in a processing industry. Pinch technology is the most common method, which is aimed at minimizing the requirement of utilities by maximizing the process to process heat transfer. In the present study temperature interval diagram or TID is used to identify the targets for minimum utility requirement and maximum process to process heat transfer in a processing facility. The targets for heat exchanger network are presented and minimization of number of heat exchangers are provided using stream splitting technique. EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF HEAT TRANSFER FROM PLATE FIN ARRAY IN MIXED CONVECTION ...ijiert bestjournal
The work summarized in this paper presents an exper imental study of heat transfer from plate fin in mixed convection mode enhancement by the us e of plate fins is presented. After a brief review of the basic methods used to enhance the hea t transfer by simultaneous increase of heat transfer surface area as well as the heat tran sfer coefficient,a simple experimental method to assess the heat transfer enhancement is p resented. The method is demonstrated on plate fins as elements for the heat transfer enhanc ement, but it can in principle be applied also to other fin forms. That is varying various paramet ers (height, spacing). The order of the magnitude of heat transfer enhancement obtained exp erimentally,it was found that by a direct comparison of Nu and Re no conclusion regarding the relative performances could be made. This is because the dimensionless variables are int roduced for the scaling of heat transfer and pressure drop results from laboratory to large scal e but not for the performance comparison. Therefore a literature survey of the performance co mparison methods used in the past was also performed. Experiments will carried out on mix ed convection heat transfer from plate fin heat sinks subject to the influence of its geometry and heat flux. A total of 9 plate fins were pasted into the upper surface of the base plate. Th e area of the base plate is 150mm by 150mm. The base plate and the fins were made of alu minum. For all tested plate fin heat sinks, however, the heat transfer performance for h eat sinks with plate fins was better than that of solid pins.

Steady heat transfer enhancement has been studied in helically coiled-tube heat exchangers. The outer side of the wall of the heat exchanger contains a helical corrugation which makes a helical rib on the inner side of the tube wall to induce additional swirling motion of fluid particles. Numerical calculations have been carried out to examine different geometrical parameters and the impact of flow and thermal boundary conditions for the heat transfer rate in laminar and transitional flow regimes. Calculated results have been compared to existing empirical formula and experimental tests to investigate the validity of the numerical results in case of common helical tube heat exchanger and additionally results of the numerical computation of corrugated straight tubes for laminar and transition flow have been validated with experimental tests available in the literature. Comparison of the flow and temperature fields in case of common helical tube and the coil with spirally corrugated wall configuration are discussed. Heat exchanger coils with helically corrugated wall configuration show 80–100% increase for the inner side heat transfer rate due to the additionally developed swirling motion while the relative pressure drop is 10–600% larger compared to the common helically coiled heat exchangers. New empirical Co-relation has been proposed for the fully developed inner side heat transfer prediction in case of helically corrugated wall configuration.

Shortage of detailed and accurate experimental data on fuel-air mixing in furnaces is due to the difficulty and complexity of measurements in flames. Although it may be possible with infra-Red camera to obtain an indication of what happens in the furnace by graphical image resolution this is not expected to be sufficiently detailed because it contains only the temperature gradient. More detailed information, however, may be obtained from the simulated resolution using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) technique where the total number of elements/points defines the detailed level that can be displayed or captured in graphical image. Simulation resolution studies two aspects of the momentum effects on flame which are the forward momentum normally associated with the average outlet velocity of the combustion products and the lateral momentum caused by swirl. Following the American Petroleum Institute guidelines (API 560) for combustion adjustment in furnaces, it may be possible to have less emission and a maximum efficiency, but the potential interaction between the several operation and design factors are not thereby considered as in a mathematical model of CFD.

Abstract Heat sinks are commonly used for cooling of electronic devices. Heat sinks, an array of heat fins, remove the heat from the surfaces of the chips by enhancing the heat Transfer rate through heat conduction process. Heat can also be removed from the chip surfaces through forced convection heat transfer. In this project work, CFD and conjugate heat transfer analysis is carried out for various fin geometries with Zigzag, Fluted, Slanted mirror, Custom pin fin and staggered array configurations for low thermal resistance and minimum pressure drop. Numerical simulations are carried out for each of the above mentioned fin geometries with common base plate thickness of 2 mm, fin height of 28 mm and fin thickness of 1 mm for three different heat loads namely 50 W, 75 W and 100 W with air flow of 3.933 m/s (15 ft3/min or 15 CFM) and air inlet temperature of 25oC. The results are compared for thermal performance of a heat sink for each of above geometries and it is observe that the fin with Slanted Mirror geometry gives the best performance among all the other geometries for minimum Pressure drop. The average heat transfer coefficients for fins with slanted mirror geometry, zig zag configuration, fluted type, custom pin fin and staggered array are found to be 215 W/m2K, 164 W/m2K, 164 W/m2K, 157 W/m2K and 145 W/m2K respectively Keywords: Fin geometries of Heat sinks, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Conjugate heat transfer.

NUMERICAL ANALYSIS TO OPTIMIZE THE HEAT TRANSFER RATE OF TUBE-IN-TUBE HELICAL...Netha Jashuva
Heat exchanger is a device which is used to transfer heat between two fluids which may be in direct contact or may flow separately in two tubes or channels. We find numerous applications of heat exchangers in day today life. For example condensers and evaporators used in refrigerators and air conditioners. In thermal power plant heat exchangers are used in boilers, condensers, air coolers and chilling towers etc. Similarly the heat exchangers used in automobile industries are in the form of radiators and oil coolers in engines. Heat exchangers are also used in large scale in chemical and process industries for transferring the heat between two fluids which are at a single or two states. Main aim of our project is to maximize the heat transfer rate with minimum power loss. We know that with increase in Reynolds number Nusselt number increases hence the heat transfer coefficient. But with increase in Reynolds number pumping power also increases but increase in power requirement is more compared to increases in heat transfer coefficient. So there exist a particular Reynolds number or (Dean Number) for which both the curve intersects, which is the optimum point for that particular (D/d) condition.
CFD Analysis of Plate Fin Tube Heat Exchanger for Various Fin InclinationsIJERA Editor
ANSYS Fluent software is used for three dimensional CFD simulations to investigate heat transfer and fluid flow characteristics of six different fin angles with plain fin tube heat exchangers. The numerical simulation of the fin tube heat exchanger was performed by using a three dimensional numerical computation technique. Geometry of model is created and meshed by using ANSYS Workbench software. To solve the equation for the fluid flow and heat transfer analysis ANSYS FLUENT was used in the fin-tube heat exchanger. The fluid flow and heat transfer are simulated and result compared for both laminar and turbulent flow models k-epsilon and SST k-omega, with steady state solvers to calculate heat transfer, flow velocity and temperature fields of variable inclined fin angles (Ɵ = 00,100 , 200, 300, 400,500). Model is validate by comparing the simulated value of velocity, temperature and colburn factor with experimental and numerical results investigated by WANG [1] and GHORI KIRAR [10]. Reasonable agreement is found between the simulations and other results, and the ANSYS Fluent software is sufficient for simulating the flow fields in tube fin heat exchanger.

CFD Analysis of Concentric Tube Heat Exchanger Using Twisted TapesIJARIIT
In this paper, the three dimensional CFD modeling studies on heat transfer, friction factor and thermal performance
of concentric tube heat exchanger using twisted tapes (Plain, V-cut, , Jagged V-cut) with different twist ratios (y=2.0, 4.0) are
used. Twisted tapes are used to augment the heat transfer by creating turbulence in the fluid flow. Various methods are applied
to increase thermal performance of heat transfer devices such as treated surfaces, rough surfaces, swirling flow devices, coiled
tubes, and surface tension devices. Out of these twisted tape method is used to increase the thermal performance. Twisted tape
inserts on effectiveness of heat exchanger has analyzed for different Reynolds Number. The maximum thermal performance
factor was obtained by the Jagged V-cut twisted tape (H=50) insert compare to other twisted tapes. Simultaneously the friction
factor has been analyzed
