Outline
Introduction
• Activity 1:Testing different kinds of ice
• Activity 2: Hunting for composite materials
• Activity 3: Exploring the difference between
strength and stiffness
• Activity 4:Testing a foam composite for strength
and stiffness
• Design Project :Designing a fishing pole
• Product Idea: Garbage container for electronic
waste
Introduction
• A composite material : is a material made
from two or more constituent materials with
significantly different physical or chemical
properties that, when combined, produce a
material with characteristics different from
the individual components
Activity 1: Testing different kinds of ice
We took 3 sample
Sample (1): water
Sample (2): water + tissue
Sample (3): water + tissue + cotton
Result:
Sample (3) is the strongest one and sample (1) is
the weakest one.
Activity 2: Hunting for composite
materials
Natural Composites:
wood
Industrial composites
Concrete
Activity 3: Exploring the Difference
between strength and stiffness
We tested different materials for
strength and flexibility
Strong → weak
1-iron
2-nylon cord
3-plastic
4-wood
5-pasta
Most flexibility → least flexibility
1-nylon cord
2-iron
3-plastic
4-wood
5-Pasta
Activity 4:Testing a foam composite
for strength and stiffness
Result:
Sample (3) is the strongest one and sample (1) is the
weakest one.
Foam composite is stronger than plain foam
Activity (5) : Designing a fishing pole
1}strong
2}flexible
3}light
We designed a fishing pole
from different materials
The fishing pole must be:
Final Project:
Garbage container for electronic waste
• Introduction and Rationale:
Electronic waste cause serious health and pollution problems if
not disposed in a safe way. Rapid Changes in Technology have
resulted in a fast-growing surplus of electronic waste around the
globe. The chemicals in the mobile phones can leach from
landfills into the groundwater system and cause hazards . Our
product will help to protect the environment from the hazards of
the electronic waste by specifying a Garbage Container for the
electronic waste to be easily separated from the non electronic
waste and recycled.
Garbage container for electronic waste
Hypothesis:
• Specifying a certain container for the
electronic waste will help us to separate it
from the non electronic waste and to be easily
recycled.
Garbage container for electronic waste
Methods and Materials
This electronic waste container will be
joined to the main garbage container
and made from:
1- the inner layer : foam
2- the middle Layer : Heat insulator
3- the outer layer : Iron
Garbage container for electronic waste
Results:
• Our product will help to separate the electronic waste easily
from the non electronic waste
• The separated electronic waste can be used for recycling
• Our product will help to reduce the hazards of the electronic
waste on the environment
Garbage container for electronic waste
Recommendations:
• We recommend our product to be used
everywhere .
• We recommend that every building has a
garbage container for the electronic waste
Conclusions
We had knowledge from Albairaq workshops
about the composites and the importance of
Composites in our lives. We trained on how to
do a presentation and how to think of creative
ideas.
Acknowledgment
Many thanks to AL-Bairaq team from Center for Advanced
Materials (CAM), Qatar University for supporting us during our
journey with a AL-Bairaq.
Also, we would like to thank the sponsors UNESCO, Qatar
