Complete FMP Development Diary

Week 1 – Initial Research and Proposal
I feel confident about writing my proposal as my ideas have similarities with last years FMP in which I created a double page spread
and front cover for a magazine. Due to magazines and fanzines sharing many similarities I feel I will be able to a strong proposal for
this project.
I think I have enough knowledge in multiple aspects for creating my fanzine. I feel very confident with using photoshop which is
where I will be creating most of my artwork for my fanzine. Also after last years FMP I gained a lot of knowledge with photography
which is important for this topic as I will be taking all my own pictures for my fanzine. I have also researched artists that I feel are
very relevant to the art style I will be producing and have gained enough knowledge in their area of art.
I feel I need to do more research on some other graphic designers in order to get a wider inspiration for the work I will be producing.
By doing this I will be able to produce a larger variety of pieces to showcase within my fanzine. I also feel I need to research
designers and artists of a different style as I will be able to incorporate their ideas into my own work creating a more unique finished
product.
I feel I have produced enough work in terms of my proposal however for my initial research I feel I could add at least one more
designer to research in order to widen my knowledge in key areas. To do this I feel I will research a designer/artist/photographer
that isn’t from the same style as what I wish to create instead something similar. By doing this I will be able to show a wider
spectrum of knowledge.

Week 2 – Research
So far throughout my research I have mainly learned about pre existing fanzines of the same topic in order to get a good idea of
how my final piece should look. I have also learned how I can adapt photography look book magazines to a vaporwave genre by
researching the likes of aesthetic magazine.
I feel I need to conduct some focused primary research in order to get a good understanding of what people would like to see from
my fanzine. By doing this I can gather research that is tailored exactly for what I am after and can be applied directly to my work. I
also feel I need to research more into the location and photography side of my project as this is something I am less confident in.
I feel I can take a good understanding of how my fanzine should look as well as the things it should include. I will also take forward
inspiration that I have got from other fanzines of the same topic.
I don’t feel my research has changed much about how I will approach my project as I already had a good idea. However, my
research has given me more ideas for the actual creation for my project.
The only problem my research has highlighted is the creation of a tshirt design and how I might go about getting this design out into
the public. I have a few ideas on how to combat this such as using redbubble which is free to use when creating tshirt designs.
I feel the most successful aspects of my research so far has been the analysis of the existing fanzines and magazines. This is
because I feel have highlighted areas that relate to the vaporwave genre and why they work.

Week 3 – Research
In the final week of my research I learned of multiple locations which I could use for the photography aspect of my project. I also did
primary research by sending out a survey I made to my classmates. This has given me a good understanding of what kind of stuff I
should include in my fanzine.
I feel I may need to do more initial research into other graphic designers in order to get more inspiration for my project. I also feel
like a focus group for people who know what vaporwave is would be very beneficial.
I feel I can take forward some of the results from my survey despite some of the answers being from people who have no idea what
vaporwave is. Even though they don’t know what vaporwave as a genre is they sill gave me a god idea for what the teenage
demographic would like to see in a fanzine.
The research I have done wont really effect how I approach the project. It has however supported some of ideas for example I knew
I wasn’t wanting to put long worded articles in and my primary research supported this claim.
My research hasn’t highlighted any major problems. It has however highlighted that vaporwave as a genre isn’t very popular and not
many people know about it. Therefor with this information I am going to try and make pieces that have vaporwave influence
however can be appreciated by people who don’t understand that genre.
I feel the most successful part of my research is still the analysis of pre existing magazine designs. This has given me a very good
understanding of how id like my fanzine to turn out and the kind of quality that is expected from me.

Week 4 – Problem Solving
So far I have identified multiple potential issues such as the camera and lens getting damaged, using incorrect software, software
being out of date, models not showing up and potential issues with the location. All of these highlighted problems have had
solutions noted if they were to occur.
To solve these problems I have looked into all the software's I could be using and made sure I have them available on wither my
laptop or the college macs, I have spoken to my potential models and noted down ways to prevent the camera getting damaged. I
have also looked into ways of backing up my data and looked into possibly buying a mass storage USB drive in order to back my
work up.
The initial bit of problem solving hasn’t really influenced my project much as the problems I have highlighted have all been problems
that I have looked at in the past on previous projects and isn’t exactly anything unique to this project.
I will note the solutions to any problems that arise in coming weeks in my weekly and daily development diary's.
I feel overall I am quite good at highlighting and solving potential problems however I feel I could improve by looking into more
potential problems and looking at a wider array of problems.

Week 5 – Problem Solving
Problem solving has been very successful this week as I completed the section by experimenting with 3 different design styles. I
followed 3 different YouTube tutorials on edits I have never attempted before. I am very happy with how all the edits turned out.
The problem I was faced with this week was using Adobe Lightroom as this is program I've never used before and I had little to no
knowledge on how to use it. However with the help of a YouTube tutorial I have been able to create an edit I am very happy with
and I will be using the edit style again in future work throughout this project.
I have learned many practical skills this week. One of the most notable is understanding how to use Lightroom as this is something
I've never done before. I now have a rough understanding of the features in Lightroom and how to adapt them to my own images. I
have also used many distortion filters which will be very useful throughout the whole of my project as distortion is a frequently used
effect in vaporwave style artwork.
I feel I am ready to start planning my overall fanzine as I feel I have learned enough through my experiments. For example I now
feel I am ready to start using Lightroom for my main project as the experiments have shown me how to use it to a good quality. I
also feel the other experiments have furthered my knowledge on photoshop to put me in a good position for the creation of my
fanzine.

Week 6 – Planning
So far planning has been very successful this week. I have looked into locations, models, finance, health and safety and time
management.
I have already made plans on where my possible locations will be and why they are good locations to use. I have spoken to
potential models to confirm their availability. I have also looked into the financial aspect of this project and how much it is going to
cost me. These figures are also relevant to one or more of the models as they will have to pay for train fair as some of the shots will
be taken in the likes of Sheffield/Manchester. Other plans I have made look into the health and safety of my project and how to keep
everyone safe whilst in college and outside of college and finally I have created a Gannt chart in order to help with time
management.
I still need to plan the content side of y project for example style sheet, image style, colour scheme, potential fonts and layout plans.
I feel my planning is quite good as I look at a range of outcomes. For example when planning the location I didn’t just look at 1
location, I looked at 3. This is because I might only be able to make it to a couple of locations or some locations may not work out
depending on cost. By looking at multiple locations I have multiple options to choose from and back up plans in place.
I feel the planning that is going to be most difficult is the style sheet as the vaporwave genre takes inspiration from many different
styles and I'm going to have to create on single unique style that captures all of the other styles.

Week 7 – Planning
I feel the colour scheme aspect of my planning worked really well as I have looked at a variety of different vaporwave images and
using Adobe Color I created a main colour scheme from each of these images. Using these colour schemes I now have a good idea
of the colours that repeat. The repeating colours are common in vaporwave artwork and will be used in my own project.
I still have to complete a few more layout plans because at the moment I only have a front cover and 2 double page spreads. I hope
to create at least a few more double page spreads so I have a better idea of the rough designs I will be going for instead of going in
blind when creating my work.
I have created a Gannt chart which will act as a rough production schedule. I also have my proposal which has a production
schedule. This will be very useful if I stick to it as I feel I have given myself enough time in order to complete the fanzine and still
have enough time left over to make any necessary improvements
I feel I will review my planning sometimes however it will mainly be to look at fonts, colours and layout plans as these are the areas
I will be following most closely
So far nothing has gone wrong because of poor planning and I am hoping nothing will go wrong when production starts.
I feel I have done enough planning and have enough faith in my own personal ability that nothing major should go wrong in the
coming weeks during production.
During the planning stages of my work I learned the importance of creating detailed layout plans and looking in detail at colour
schemes and font styles as this will make production a lot smoother as I already know what I want and where.

Development Diary – Front Cover
I began by using the gradient tool to create a pink to aqua
colour gradient from the top right to the bottom left. The
reason I chose to go from corner to corner and not top down
is because I feel it adds a more unique feel to my front cover
and shows the transition better as it is wider. The font I have
chosen to use on the masthead and the footer is Dolce Vita.
I chose to split the word vaporwave as I feel it adds an effect
of distortion to the front cover, distortion being a common
theme within vaporwave artwork.
The second screenshot shows the centre box which is going
to contain the main images for my front cover. I flipped the
gradient colour so it goes in the opposite direction in order to
emphasise the separation between the centre box and the
rest of the page. To create the grid I found a standard square
grid on google images and using the warp tool gave the
effect that they are converging on 1 area.

One of the most common images that is used in vaporwave artwork is the Greek Helios statue. Because I want people to get a very
strong vaporwave vibe from my fanzine I decided I’d have the statue as one of the main images. Here are three different designs I
came up with to showcase the Helios Statue. The first is a standard black and white effect. To do this I selected the layer and then
added a threshold adjustment layer which removed the colour and gave it the black and white line work effect. With the second
screenshot I used the filter gallery setting and used the poster edges setting in order to get a outline effect yet still keeping the colour of
the image. With the third screenshot I didn’t change anything except adjust the hue and saturation of the image slightly. I feel the one
that will work best is the hue and saturation one as this is going to have other edits added on top of it and the other 2 options would be
too cluttered with everything else.

Here I added a plaint splatter cut out to the face of the Helios
statue. To achieve this I simply found a splatter effect on
google images, placed it over the Helios face and then using
a clipping mask I cut out the holographic effect to fit the
splatter perfectly.
I then added the classic vaporwave sun that is frequently
used in many other vaporwave art pieces. To create this I
made a circle on photoshop and filled it in with an orange to
purple gradient. These are colours that give a vaporwave
feel. I then used the multiple marquee tool to select multiple
rows at the bottom of the circle and cut them out as these
are very common in vaporwave art.
The final image I added to the front cover was a glitch effect
hand. I found the hand on google images as a mannequin
hand and then using the wave filter I displaced some
sections of the hand. I then took a copy of the original hand
and added a pink colour overlay to it and then placed the
pink hand behind the broken up hand. By doing this it gives
the effect of the colours in the image being displaced.

Development Diary – Page 1 & 2
Here is the picture of one of my models Tom. I chose to use the pink bucket hat as a prop as I feel it gives off a vaporwave aesthetic. To
edit this photo I took the forest image which can be seen below and then using the wind effect I stretched it out to give very distorted,
pixelated effect. When applying this effect to the image of my model I created a clipping mask around his face and then straight down
from his face. I then added the distorted forest image to the clipping mask which can be seen in the second screenshot. The third
screenshot shows the effect with a change to the colours. The reason I chose to change the colour was because it would fit better with
the image it was being added to. To change
the colour I created a hue saturation
adjustment layer and then edited the sliders
until I achieved a strong blue colour
throughout

Here I added the edited image of Tom on to the double page spread that will become my contents page and page 2. I found a basic
purple sky image on google to use as a background and then added the image of Tom to it. Using the wave filter I distorted the image of
Tom to make it look like areas of the image have been displaced. This gives the effect of distortion which is a running theme throughout
my fanzine. The second screenshot shows a reflection effect added to the bottom of the image. I created a ripple displacement image
using the stylize, emboss feature and flipping the image upside down and lowering the opacity. By doing this it gives a realistic look to
the image.

Here I added 2 Arizona Iced Tea cans to the background of the image. I did this because the original Arizona Iced Tea can is a very
common image used in vaporwave artwork due to its light teal colour and aesthetic flower design. I chose a can image on google that
showed the can open and then I found a water fall png which I could add to the image. After transforming the waterfall to fit the can
mouth I changed the colour of the waterfall to match the colour of the pixelated effected on Tom’s face. I did this using the hue and
saturation adjustment layer.

Using a tutorial I found on YouTube I created a 3D ring in photoshop. This was very confusing to create and I would most likely struggle
recreating it as the tutorial I used wasn’t very helpful so I tried my best to create an accurate ring using what little 3D knowledge I had.
Unfortunately I couldn’t get any screenshots of me creating the ring in the 3D maker as I wasn’t sure it was even going to work and then
by chance it ended up turning out better than I could of hoped. Using this ring I added a dolphin image that I found on good and the
same holographic effect that was used on the front cover. All of these assets together create the iconic dolphin ring image that can be
seen in many other pieces of vaporwave artwork.

Here I duplicated the dolphin in the ring and flipped it over to the other side of the page. By doing this I have filled in the bottom half of
that image however I haven’t made it too cluttered with images. I also added some Japanese text which is very common within the
vaporwave genre as it takes a lot of inspiration from Japanese culture. I added a white stroke at size 7pt to the dark purple text in order
to make the text stand out. I then added a aqua blue outer glow to the text with blend mode normal and softer technique. By doing this I
feel the text fits in with the overall image as there is a common link of the aqua blue colour throughout the image.
After completing the Arizona waterfall page I then went on to create the contents page for my fanzine. I chose to add the flowers from
the Arizona Iced Tea which created a link between the 2 pages. I then added the contents title in the Walkway font using the same
colour scheme as the Japanese lettering however with the contents title there is no outer glow and the stroke is aqua instead of white.

As shown in my layout plan on my planning PowerPoint, the main image for my contents page will be contained in a circle which can be
seen below. To create the background for the circle I got a mountain image and added a zigzag line of colour along the centre of the
mountain range in teal. I then used the liquify filter to create a marble effect which would be used as the background. I again decided to
use the Helios statue due to its relevance in vaporwave artwork. I changed the colour settings of the statue to give a purple hue. I did
this using the colour balance and the hue and saturation adjustment layers. In order to achieve the distorted effect I simply used the
wave effect which can be seen throughout my fanzine. I then added a paint brush effect that I found on google images and layered it
across the eyes of the statue. Then using the VCR OSD font I wrote out “I SEE YOU” and then made a layer via cut of the top half of
the text and moved it slightly to the right. This gives a more controlled distortion effect instead of using the wave filter. I also slightly
warped the text to fit the brush swipe. The final thing I added to the contents page was the artwork titles which can be seen at the
bottom of the page. I wanted them to
be quite small and not the main
focus of this page which is why
they are only in black and haven’t
been edited

For this double page spread I used the same grid from my front page and warped it to give a 3D effect on the page. I changed the
colour of this grid to a bight aqua and added it onto a black background. The aqua stands out of the black background and also looks
very similar to the colours seen in the 1982 Tron film. Due to vaporwave taking a lot of inspiration from the 80’s and 90’s I feel this is
very fitting for my project. I then added a line across that back edge of the grid in the same aqua colour and added an outer glow to the
line to give the effect that the grid is going back forever. I finally added a light lilac border around the image as these colours contrast
each other well. Adding the border was something I said id do in my planning PowerPoint as it separates the image from the double
page spread.

Here I added the circle which again can be found on the front cover of my fanzine. This circle was centre and was cut off slightly at the
bottom to give the effect the circle rising from the back of the grid. I used the same method of cutting out the bottom of the circle as this
is how the design can be seen in other pieces of vaporwave artwork. The gradient I chose to add to the circle went from light blue to
purple with the light blue being at the top so it matches closely with the grid colour. I then added an outer glow around the circle which I
feel links the circle well with the glow on the grid.

Finally I added the main subject of this image which is the text. I used the exact same style of text as my Outrun Retro experiment.
When I created my Outrun Retro experiment I used smart filters in order to keep the same style. When creating this I simply had to
change what the text said in the smart filters and it would change the overall image. I chose the word vaporwave as it is the most
obvious link to the vaporwave genre. I opted to keep the same colour scheme as the experiment as well as the pink for the word Vapor
contrasts the blue from the sun and the grid very well. This text style also further supports the 80’s Tron theme with the chrome style
bottom text.

Here I began editing an image on Adobe Lightroom along the right of this page you can see the values I used to
create the final image. I lowered the Temp of the image to give it more of a blue-ish hue and then made the Tint
value higher which gave an overall purple hue to the image.
I then lowered the Highlights and Whites to the lowest possible value and then upped the Shadows and the Blacks
to the highest value. This gives a very wide
dynamic range and gives an effect similar to
HDR.
Then in the presence section I increased the
clarity slightly to give a slightly more sharp
effect to the image.
Finally I increased the blacks in the image
slightly using the Tone Curve. This means the
blacks in my image have a bit of colour to them
and aren’t completely black.

Here are the final edits I made to the image as well as the final edit of the image itself.
Here I edited each colour individually on the image which gave me lots of control when
trying to achieve the perfect purple hue image I wanted.
For this image I edited all the colours as all
the colours featured in this image in order
to create an image that gives off a very
purple hue and fits very closely with the
vaporwave theme.
The final setting I edited on this image was
the split toning. By picking the shadows I
could get the best possible looking purple
hue for this image. I chose to not edit the
highlights on this image as it gave too
strong of a purple hue and was too much in
my opinion.

Using the image I edited in the previous slide I began creating
my VHS effect. I started with adding the text in the bottom left
of the image using the VCR OSD font. I then began with
adding 5% noise to give a slight retro feel. Then, using the
single row marquee tool I selected an area at the top of the
image. I then used ctrl + T to transform the marquee and then
whilst holding shift I stretched the marquee up to stretch that
section of the image. Then with this selection I used the shear
distortion in order to create a ripple which only effects the
selected section. I repeated this process 2 more times at the
bottom of the image which gave the effect of the VHS
flickering.
To give the effect of colour distortion I went to the colour
channels and selected just the red channel. I then added a
very slight shear to the red colour channel which shifts the
reds in the image slightly.
The final thing I added to the image was using the single row
marquee tool I made multiple lines across the image and then
deleted the pixels to show the subtle white lines which give the
effectof the image tearing slightly.

Here I began work on another double page spread. I started with the pal tree picture that can be seen at the bottom left of this page. I
edited the hue and saturation as well as the colour balance of this image in order to give it a purple hue which is a common theme
throughout my fanzine. I then added a dark green border round the image. I chose this green because it is the colour of the windows 95
background screen. I then added the wave distortion to the image to split the tree up. I then used the single row marquee tool to delete
single layers of pixels along the image to give the effect of tearing quality. I finally added the windows 95 task bar to the bottom of the
screen giving the image the effect of it being a PC desktop. The final tweak I made was changing the start menu on the left of the
taskbar to say ‘Stop’ using the MS Sans Serif to keep with the theme and look authentic.

Here I added 5 desktop icons that I found on google images. They are the same icons that
would be found on an original windows 95 operating system. Then using the MS Sans Serif font
I added names to the icons however the names make out the phrase ‘They are always
watching you’. This is common theme throughout the vaporwave genre of big brother style
surveillance.
I then began editing image of my model Jack. I again gave him the bucket hat as it fits with the
vaporwave aesthetic and then changed the hue and saturation of the image to give a strong
purple hue for the same reason.
Using the brush tool I added spots of pink
and blue to this eyes and mouth and then
using the liquify tool I created a paint drip
effect which mixes the 2 colours together. I
did this as I will be adding a cut out of his
face to a MS Paint window on this page.

Here I added an MS Paint window which I found on google. I cut out what was on the original image as I will be adding my own image
to the window. After cutting out the middle of the window I added a plain white rectangle to act as the MS Paint canvas in the window
and then added my image of Jack with the paint drops.
Finally I added an error message which was found on google images. Using the grey pen tool, which was set to the same colour as the
background of the window, I removed the error message which was on the original image. Then using the MS Sans Serif font I added
my own text to the error message.

After creating the new error message I copied it around 10 times and
positioned each layer to give the effect of the window being opened
multiple times. This is what would happen if the computer was glitching.
I then found another error message and did the same by editing the text
on both the button and the window itself and then copied the window
multiple times and positioned it in a similar way to the previous error
message. I chose to make the window go down toward the task bar and
then back up toward the top as this is what would normally happen on a
real windows operating system.

Here I began editing an image on Adobe Lightroom along the right of
this page you can see the values I used to create the final image. I

Here is the complete double page spread of both my edits side
by side. I chose to have a split down the centre of the image as
they are different images and will be seen on separate pages in
the fanzine. The split gives each image a border and I feel it
creates more of a focus on the image. The block colour I chose
for the background was very a light, pale green as I feel it
contrasts the purple hue from the images very well. Both of
these images were taken by me in the Sheffield Botanical
Gardens

Here I began work on another double page spread. This
double page spread would have a heavy focus on the
windows operating system. I chose the iconic windows
desktop background that is very familiar to anyone who had a
windows desktop. I chose to edit the colours of this
background in lightroom using the values that can be seen
along the right. I opted to give the background a purple sky
and turquoise grass as these are the most common
vaporwave colours. After editing the image in Lightroom I
added it to Photoshop and added the text ‘PLAY’ to give a
similar effect to that of a VHS. I used
the font VCR OSD which is very
similar to the same font that is seen
on original VHS tapes.

Here I began adding palm trees to the grass of the windows background. On the filters section I chose render and then trees which
allowed me to use photoshops built in tree generating feature. After picking the style of tree which would best suit this image I then
began copying the trees all across the grass. To make the trees look more natural and less uniformed I changed the sizes of some and
then put some on different angles to give the effect they aren't all the same.

After editing the trees I then added the windows 95 logo which I found on google. I removed the background of the logo fully so it didn’t
stick out on my image. I then added a small amount of noise to the logo which gave the effect it was of low quality and old. I then used
the distort wave filter over the whole image to create a feel of distortion to the image. This is a common theme within my vaporwave
fanzine. The final thing I added to this image was the subtle white lines that can be seen going across the image. This was done using
the single row marquee tool across the image and then deleting the pixels to give the effect the screen is tearing slightly.

Here I took one of the images I took in the Sheffield Botanical Gardens and placed it onto my double page spread. I started by cutting
out everything that can be seen through the window as I am going to add my own background later. I did this using the lasso tool to
start with and then using the eraser tool to get a more accurate removal of the background.
I decided to give this image a light baby blue border and cut the image down the centre. This is because I want each half separated as
it adds a level of distortion to the image and it doesn’t cut down the middle of my model.

Here I began creating the nebula style background that I will be using on the double page spread that can be seen on the previous slide.
To do this I followed a tutorial on YouTube however I used colours of my choice that fit with my image.
To create this nebula background I began with a full black background and then added 30% noise to the image to give the effect of starts.
I then added a levels adjustment layer and then set the first value on the left of the histogram to 150. I then used the screen overlay over
this layer and then duplicated the layer and resized it to get some lager stars.
Finally I selected a large soft brush and picked 3 different colours that work well together. I chose pinks and purples as they fit well with
my colour scheme. I then placed several single brush strokes along the image. I then added a gaussian blur filter over the top of the
colour strokes at a radius of 300 pixels.

I then used the eclipse marquee tool to create an oval in the centre of the page and then used the render clouds filter option which
created a large mess of white and black clouds inside the oval. I then used the render, difference clouds filter option which added a bit
more depth to the cloud in the oval. Then using the filter overlay I set it colour dodge which added some lighter cloud looking areas on
the image. I used the difference cloud filter again which created a much more realistic and noticeable nebula effect.
Finally, I used the warp transfer tool which allowed me to create a unique wave-like shape with the cloud effect. I then used the puppet
warp tool in order to get more control over the warping and bend it into more of a squiggle going along the image.

Using the custom brush I created which can be seen along the right I added a single stroke of white
which goes through the centre of the nebule scene. I then lowered the opacity and set it to overlay over
the other layers. This adds more depth to the image in my opinion.
I then edited the overall colour of this nebula scene using a curves adjustment layer in which I made the
image slightly more purple instead of hot pink which fits better with the theme of my fanzine.
Finally I added a stock nebula image just to complete the image and give it a splash of extra colour. To
make the nebula stock fit in with the rest of the image I set the overlay to linear dodge which meant the

Here I added the nebula background to the image of amber next to the
doorway. After I added the background in and positioned it in the doorway
I began experimenting with different colour effects to add to the whole
image. The bottom left screenshot has no filter and as you can see it
doesn’t tie the piece together very well. The bottom right screenshot has
the hues and colour balance edited to give off a more blue hue to the
image. This still didn’t fit with the background as well as id like so I edited
the colour balance and the hues one more time and I got a hue I was
happy with. The top right screenshot shows the complete double page
spread with a purple hue over the
whole image which gives the effect

Then in the presence section a increased the saturation slightly to
give a slightly more saturated effect the image and lowered the
vibrance slightly.

For this image I edited all the colours as all the colours featured in
this image in order to create an image that gives off a very purple
hue and fits very closely with the vaporwave theme.
picking the shadows I could get the best possible looking purple hue
for this image. I chose to not edit the highlights on this image as it
gave too strong of a purple hue and was too much in my opinion.

Here is the complete double page spread of both my edits side
by side. I chose to have a split down the centre of the image as
they are different images and will be seen on separate pages in
the fanzine. The split gives each image a border and I feel it
creates more of a focus on the image. The block colour I chose
for the background was very a light, pale green as I feel it
contrasts the purple hue from the images very well. Both of
these images were taken by me in the Sheffield Botanical
Gardens

Here I began editing an image on Adobe Lightroom along the right of this page you can see the values I used to
create the final image. I lowered the Temp of the image to give it more of a blue-ish hue and then made the Tint
value higher which gave an overall purple hue to the image.
I then lowered the Highlights and Whites to the lowest possible value and then upped the Shadows and the Blacks
to the highest value. This gives a very wide
dynamic range and gives an effect similar to
HDR.
Finally I increased the blacks in the image
slightly using the Tone Curve. This means the
blacks in my image have a bit of colour to them
and aren’t completely black.

Here are the final edits I made to the image as well as the final edit of the image itself.
Here I edited each colour individually on the image which gave me lots of control when
trying to achieve the perfect purple hue image I wanted.
For this image I edited all the colours as all
the colours featured in this image in order
to create an image that gives off a very
purple hue and fits very closely with the
vaporwave theme.

Using the image I edited in the previous slide I began creating
my VHS effect. I started with adding the text in the bottom left
of the image using the VCR OSD font. I then began with
adding 5% noise to give a slight retro feel. Then, using the
single row marquee tool I selected an area at the top of the
image. I then used ctrl + T to transform the marquee and then
whilst holding shift I stretched the marquee up to stretch that
section of the image. Then with this selection I used the shear
distortion in order to create a ripple which only effects the
selected section. I repeated this process 2 more times at the
bottom of the image which gave the effect of the VHS
flickering.
To give the effect of colour distortion I went to the colour
channels and selected just the green channel. I then added a
very slight shear to the green colour channel which shifts the
reds in the image slightly.
The final thing I added to the image was using the single row
marquee tool I made multiple lines across the image and then
deleted the pixels to show the subtle white lines which give the
effectof the image tearing slightly.

Development Diary – Back Cover
Here is my complete back cover for my fanzine. I wanted this to be quite a minimalistic page to finish off the fanzine. I took the same
gradient as my front cover and simply placed a column which I found on google images and cut out the background so it fits onto the page. I
then cut out the background from an old Macintosh computer and placed it on top of the column. The column and Macintosh computer are
both heavily linked to the vaporwave genre.
