Grace is conducting secondary research for her EPQ on surveillance and needs to start planning her artefact. She will be exploring artists and existing works for inspiration. Her current artefact idea is to secretly photograph her EPQ manager, Mr. Darby, over 8 months without him knowing, to see if people are truly aware of being watched. She will display the photos to examine attitudes towards surveillance. Grace met with her photography teacher to discuss ideas. Potential options discussed include creating a photo mosaic portrait of Mr. Darby using many photos, or presenting photos in a sketchbook. Installation-style display was also considered but space may be an issue. Further research on installation artists could provide guidance.

2. Introduction:
As well as my secondary research for my research consisting from surveillance,
it is also important to note that I need to start looking towards producing my
artefact for my surveillance. So along with my secondary for my surveillance
studies I shall also be conducting my artefact research into artists and work that
I could become influence from and start working on my artefact.
Again, my artefact shall carry most of my marks for this project as it shall be the
end result of my studies.This along with my 2000 word essay shall help to
demonstrate my effort throughout the last 8 months within the EPQ course.
I have decided to start prepping my time now as I have entered this December
month to begin planning my final artefact in good time for myself to present to
everyone at the end of March/start of April next year.Thinking about time
constraints, I am hoping to spend 2 weeks planning my initial ideas on my
artefact than throughout the 2 week Christmas Holidays creating a draft
artefact to estimate how much time I would truly need to spend on my work and
if I need to make any adjustments on my final idea or if it could be possible
enough to do or not.
Within this presentation, I shall be exploring into potential artists and existing
pieces of work that can help guide my own studies into a specific area of work in
which I can show off my effort and time that has gone into this project.With this
I have additionally searched for further guidance and help with the photography
teacher to help guide me with ideas.

3. MyArtefact
Idea:
Currently, for my artefact, I have been following my EPQ manger,
Mr Darby around school times, documenting his life throughout the
8 months with photographs, exposing what he is doing throughout
the days. My main aim: is to do this without him realising or
knowing my actions, I need to be secretive, observant and vigilant
to prevent him from knowing what I am up to. My main aim is to use
all my favourite photographs of my EPQ manager and display them
for my artefact at the end of the presentation.This idea came to
mind for determining the question of do we really know we are
being watched, so by following Mr Darby without him realising will
expose the question of are we aware we are being watched
constantly or does society know we are under surveillance.
Conducting this experiment in which to determine surveillance and
see if people notice that they are truly being watched will aid within
my 2000 word report, responding to attitudes based upon this
subject. I think that surveillance has become such a big topic now
that it is hard to evade it and by myself creating something visually
rather than a report will display meaning more to others and will
show off something more dramatic and eerie to go in sync with my
project.

5. Installation
Meaning to take up an area of space in which to present my findings
and photos of my Darby surveillance throughout the school and pin
them up around for all to observe.
I like this idea, I can display all my photos in an eerie manner but also
allow people to freely walk about and observe my documented
photos of Darby.
The only problem I face however is to where exactly I would use
space to display my Darby photos, I thought a place like the corridor
where potentially people can walk down and observe Darby's life
throughout the 7 months that have been documented upon my
camera starting from October.
As well as this I don’t think this will be strong enough over all but I
still like the idea of presenting specific photos for people to see so I
may invest in a sketchbook and include the best Darby shots into
here to present in my presentation and go well with my artefact so
people can get a better look at the photos I took.
I could also look into potential artists to explore that look into
installation that can aid within my research.

7. Photo Mosaic
This idea is of a photo mosaic is of worth for me to go down, I really
loved this idea in which a thousand Darby photos can be used to
produce one big portrait of Darby to display the months of stalking I
have done for my percipient to determine the question of do we
really know we are under surveillance.
I think with the gathered amount of photos I have, I can produce
mock ups and how I can go about and make a final piece such as
this, it would really demonstrate my skills and dedicated time and
effort gone into this project.
The only problem is that it will test my skills to the extreme as I shall
be relying a lot on Photoshop to help produce this and I need to
ensure I am skilled and prepared to spend time learning this skill
whilst also going out for more Darby photos, as I already see that I
would need a lot from this –so could this be the best idea? I don’t
know but I am still liking this idea and think that I would be able to
do this.
