Competition Is Bad Essay
Losers are always in the wrong ,it is a Chinese traditional saying. In a society where the places have
people, competition is unavoidable. Competition is a part of life that can t (cannot) be avoided.
Competition is a situation in which two or more people or groups are trying to get something which
not everyone can have. Competition is all around us. When we are students and still studying in
school, we need to compete with our classmates and schoolmates for better grade. Also, when we are

contents with paying a lot of money.Their parents wish they can learn faster than what they learn at
school. Furthermore, during the vacations, students study abroad to learn English for a month instead
of playing video games at home. If they have this experience such as summer school in American
university, it is one of the greatest bonus point to apply a university in western countries. What is
more,we have one national examination to decide which college that you can enroll. The circumstances
are full of competitiveness in China now because China has salient characteristic of a large population
base. Obviously, only the highest 15% can go to the good quality colleges. Students try to learn as

Sarah Gristwood s Blood Sisters
Blood Sisters is a fascinating look at seven of the most prominent women in fifteenth century England
during the tumultuous War of the Roses. Many historians of this time focused on the
accomplishments, and downfall, of the men involved in this war. Sarah Gristwood gives us a glimpse
into the lives of these amazing women who influenced how this war would shape history just as much,
if not more, than the men who were in power at the time.
Gristwood weaves the stories of these women s lives in such a way that you get a real sense of the
love and dedication that drove these women to do whatever they had to do to uphold their family
name and make sure that their children carried on their legacy.

Emergency Department Staffing
In a hospital, the Emergency Department is the most crucial area (Girija Bhat, 2013). With many
challenges, the Emergency Department must operate efficiently in an effort to deliver quality care in a
timely manner while meeting the patient demand based on volume size (Richard Jarvis, 2016). If there
is an unbalanced match with the patient demand with the Emergency Department capacity and staffing
to deliver care within a timely manner, it can reflect on the patient flow and can create crowding and
long throughput times (Richard Jarvis, 2016). As a result, it can lead to poor quality of care and patient
outcomes (Richard Jarvis, 2016). On the other hand, the shortest throughput time while operating
efficiently with the needed staffing can lead to good patient satisfaction and better outcomes (Richard
Jarvis, 2016). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With this goal, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital created a fast track team consisting of a nurse
practitioner, nurse, and a tech for signage at the entrance to reduce throughput time (McHugh, Van
Dyke, McClelland Moss, October 2012). However, this takes way staffing in the Emergency
Department treatment area that can help to reduce additional excessive throughput time.
To improve the Emergency Department patient flow with having sufficient staffing without the
signage fast track team, I will reduce the throughput time, even more using process measurements of a
predictive model, sensitive analysis, and lean six sigma improvement process as follows:
With a Predictive Model, data will be obtained from the electronic health record system for a two year

Kingdom Of Heaven Analysis
The movie Kingdom of Heaven tries to portray the crusades that occurred in the 12th century while at
the same time describing the middle age era. Some of the movie content contains truth of that period
as well as fiction. The movie follows Balian of Ibelin and his journey from being a blacksmith to
defender of Jerusalem. Although the movie has manipulated some of the real events to appeal to a
broader audience, make it more Hollywood like, it does a decent job in portraying the battle over
Jerusalem and some of the circumstances around it.
The church played a significant role during the middle ages. In fact, the church reached the height of
its power in the high middle ages: the 11th, 12th, 13th centuries. It was during this period that the
crusade battles occurred. The movie tries to portray the events that led to one of the battles, the Battle
of Hattin 1187. The idea that God wills war was apparent in both the movie and real life. Crusaders
became consumed with fighting and killing the Muslims which was clear in Guy de Lusignan and
Reynald de Chatilon actions. On the other hand, Baldwin and Balian, in the movie, represented the
crusaders who wanted to maintain a peaceful relationship between the Muslims and the Christians.
Another concept that appears in the movie that is linked to reality is the ideas of becoming a crusader
in order to repent your sins. One of the main reason why Balian became a crusader is to repent his sin,
of killing a priest, and his wife

Essay On The Confessions By St. Augustine
In St. Augustine s The Confessions, St. Augustine discusses his interpretation of evil and the ways in
which it changed throughout the course of his life. Prior to becoming a Christian, Augustine viewed
evil from the Manichean perspective as a substance or mass that opposed good. Later in life, when
Augustine converted to Christianity, he discovered that evil was not a substance, but rather the
absence of good. I found Augustine s Christian view of evil helpful in understanding real life evils
because it provides optimism in that it shows that everything was made for good. St. Augustine first
began investigating evil in Carthage when he stumbled upon the Manicheans. At this point in
Augustine s life, he was in search of truth and began exploring different philosophies that would
provide him with answers. After observing the beliefs of the Manicheans, Augustine found their views
enlightening and started incorporating their ideas into his own life. The Manicheans believed evil was
a substance that opposed good. Augustine describes how they envisioned evil as a dark, deformed
mass, [] creeping about through the earth (5.10.20). They challenged the Christian belief that God was
all powerful by saying that if this were true, then evil would not exist because God would have
destroyed it. These views repelled Augustine from the Catholic faith. When reflecting on these views
later in life, Augustine explains their flaws and how his power of sight was restricted to seeing

It s Portion Distortion That Makes America Fat
Ask any person on the street what is the one issue that consumes more than half of the nation and the
answers will vary from cancer to the outcome of the 2016 presidential election. Most Americans are
blind to the modern day plague that consumes even the nation s youth. What is this black death that
promises health complications in the future, obesity affects more than two thirds of American adults
and one third of American children. The term obesity is defined as the condition of being grossly fat or
overweight. The American diet of processed foods is the root of the problem. The nation s health
conditions have declined since the 1970 s and reached an all time low in the early 2000 s. The solution

In It s Portion Distortion That Makes America Fat, Shannon Brownlee addresses the difference from
when fast food was introduced to now. Before burger, small fries, and a 12oz drink was considered a
filling meal and was considered treat because it was not something that happened often. Now it s
know as a kids meal. The medium, large, and super size sizes were attempts from the fast food
corporations to maximise on small minded Americans willing to believe anything that is said by
advertisements. A nation of the gullible believing that bigger is better. The extreme intake of saturated
fat, sodium, and high fructose corn syrup is leading even the health people of America down the rabbit
hole full of health complications, that promise to shed years that could have been full of joyful
memories for family and friends off one s life. Obesity is not just about being overweight and eating
unhealthy. Obesity is accompanied by diseases like heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and
some cancer. Obesity can cut someones life expectancy by ten years. Even the nation s youth are not
safe. Zinczenko also explains the gravity of rise in childhood obesity Before 1994, Diabetes in
children was generally caused by a genetic disorder only 5 percent of childhood cases were obesity
related, or Type 2, diabetes. Today, according to the National institute of Health, Type 2 diabetes
accounts for at least 30 percent of all new childhood cases of diabetes in this country. The customary

Well, well, well. Where do I even start?
Grades I guess overall, I had a pretty good year, in terms of academics. I ve kept all As throughout the
whole year, which in nice. I even got a perfect attendance award one time, (2nd Nine Weeks) which is
shocking, because I get sick really easily, and i m pretty sure I was absent. Hey, i m in no position to
complain. School is a relatively easy thing for me, grades, teachers, etc. Personally, I really enjoy
school. It s something i m good at, and something that I can understand easily. My only problem is
being surrounded by idiots who think they are entitled to more than the average student.

Next Year s Goals My goals for next year are simple: Get in shape, join ROTC, and make new friends
at my new school. I ll be changing schools because Master Sergeant is moving his jib to McLain, and
my mom is dating him so it s only natural i d go. The only goal i d have problems with would be
making new friends, because by now everyone has their own clicks and circles.
Conclusion In conclusion, my year was pretty good. I had fun on a few trips, I made excellent grades,
and I sorted out some issues I had at home. I had a lot of great moments that meant a lot to me, like
getting my dog and being with my friends and very few bad moments. I will be changing schools once
this custody thing is sorted out, and hopefully make new friends and enjoy the school. In short, I had a
pretty good year. That s

book Fifth Business is testimony of events in the life of the main character
Dunstable (later renamed Dunstan) Ramsay. Dunstan feels that his whole
life has been spent as the quot;fifth business quot; in the lives of others. There is a lot
of truth and relevence to this. Dunstan was the quot;fifth business quot; in the lives
Paul and Mary Dempster, and Boy Staunton because he altered their lives
without it ever being distinctly for the better or worse. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A lot of the events that changed Pauls life also effected that of Mary
Dempster. The same quot;snowball quot; that caused the premature birth of Paul also
greatly altered the life of Mary. Mary suffered mentally and was said to have
gone quot;simple quot;(24) after Pauls shockingly sudden birth. Dunstan s daily visits
to Mary Dempster seemed to help Reverend Amasa Dempster cope with his
wife s illness. If it wasn t for work that Dunny did for Mary then the
Reverend would not have been so ignorant of his wife s condition for such a
long time. Ramsay had a large effect on Mary s life without his presence
ever being that of a main character.
Unlike the alterations Dunny caused on the lives of Mary and Paul
Dempster, those of Boy Staunton were a lot more subtle. Dunny and Boy
always had a rivalry between them that was occasionally unintentional.
Dunny and Boy spent years of their life competing for Leola Cruikshank. If
this rivalry had not been there, it is possible that Boy would not have been as
attracted to Leola and therefore would not have the incentive to marry her.
This same rivalry caused the two to argue the night that the snowball was
thrown. This is the first time that Boy has used the method of denial to deal
with a problem. Boy, after noticing how well he coped with this situation,
used this method to deal with almost all his problems later in life.

Circuses are loved all around the world, the audience loves seeing the animals do all the crazy tricks.
What they do not know is that circuses are treating their animals terribly. Protestors are a voice for the
animals. The animals can not say what is on their minds, so the protests are doing it for them. They
have been trying to get animals out of the circuses The way animals act in the wild and circuses are
two completely different things. Protests have been going around all across the world to stop having
animals in the circus.
Even though circus protestors have been arounds for years, one event that was striking to everyone
was, in 2009 whistleblower Sam Haddock was shared photos of how a baby elephant was trained with
the circus. What these photos showed were acts of animal abuse; using sharp metal tools to get them
to do poses and tying them up their limbs and trunks. In an article written by Compassion Works

whipping tigers or making elephants stand on their heads is normal , when those activities are
anything but normal (Compassion Works International). Protestors do not understand why they think
doing this to animals is okay, causing animals pain and discomfort is not a good thing. The audience
does not see what it s like behind the scenes, that is why there is protests going on across the world so

A1. Reconnaissance
The Initial phase in cyberattack is reconnaissance. In reconnaissance phase, attackers gather
information about target s vulnerabilities which can be exploited further.
Reconnaissance are of two types:
1. Active Reconnaissance
Active reconnaissance is the information collection process in which attacker gains access to the target
system and performs port scans or check ways to go around the firewalls and routers. Since in an
active reconnaissance attacker must enter or probe the target s network, there is a possibility that target
might get information about attacker like attacker s IP address. (Mike Chapple, 2014)
2. Passive Reconnaissance
Passive reconnaissance is the process of information collection in which attacker is in passive mode
and target will not know about attacker. It generally involves research about target by using open
source information gathering tools like Google. (Czumak,2014)
In Western power grid attack, APT was well organized. They used both active and passive
reconnaissance methods to gather information. We have found the traces of attackers IP in the network
logs provided by Intelligence services. This tells us that attackers had used Active Reconnaissance to

Survey Analysis On Writing Styles
Survey Analysis
Introduction:
As someone who has a fairly unusual writing method, I set out to find other students methods of
writing styles and compare them to mine and each other s to see if my methods are unusual or if they
are actually common among my peers. My survey consisted of five simple questions that asked about
the writing process, the difficulties of writing, and how the process of revision. When I write, I dive
right into the paper; I do not outline, and I do not write with a clear organizational structure, which
comes back to haunt me sometimes. I often just write from the top of my head and then come back to
fix paragraphs that I know are weak. For the most part, my organization is based off of the assignment

Additionally, I would like to note that all the respondents were males that happened to be my friends.
However, I did ask them to answer seriously and to elaborate as best they can. Some additional
information about my methods of surveying: The survey was printed out on paper and the respondents
answered with a pen on the paper. I asked the respondents to elaborate on their answers and give me
as much information as they were willing; however, since they were my friends, they did not take my
request that seriously. Therefore some answers only respond directly to the question with little else.
This is partially my fault for not creating questions that prompted more specific responses, and this is
an important note to my findings and results.
Data Analysis: To begin the survey analysis, I will start with the results of the first question, which
was: What is the first step you take to begin writing? The responses to this question were very
straightforward and exactly what I expected. Four out of five respondents answers were related to
brainstorming or making a structured outline with a thesis and supports;; however, one said they dive
right into the introduction, just like I do. The second question asked if they spaced out their writing
over the course of a day(s) or if they preferred to write an entire assignment in one sitting. The
responses to this question was a mix of

The Ideal American Family Analysis
As stated in an article by Kimi Kennedy entitled Television: The Ideal American Family, most
American families portrayed on television in the late 40s and early 50s consisted of a husband, wife
and 2.5 kids (Kennedy). In Arthur Miller s Death of a Salesman, the Loman family seems to perfectly
fit the mold of a family living the American dream; however, the actions of the family show that
everything is not what it seems. Although the Lomans appear to be the ideal family of the time, the
way in which the family treats each other directly contrast with other fictional families of the time.
The family s treatment of Happy exemplifies the lack of attention given to some children within
American families. Throughout the play, Happy often takes a back seat to Biff when it comes to
getting his parents attention. In Act I on pages 1851 1853 Happy says multiple times, I m ... Show

Willy is conflicted about his feelings toward Biff. On page 1844, while talking to Linda, Willy goes
from saying, The trouble is he s lazy... to saying That s one thing about Biff he s not lazy in a matter of

loves his father or not. On page 1864, Biff is confident in his love toward his mother yet, the love he
feels for his father seems to be an afterthought (Miller).
The Loman family seems like the ideal American family based on television in the 1940s and 50s.
Willy, Linda, Biff, and Happy, however, do not get along very well and most they all have secrets that
they keep from each other. The Lomans first appear to be a typical fictional family of the time
consisting of a mother, father, and two children, but soon show their flaws. Arthur Miller breaks the
mold for the fictional families of the time in his play Death of a Salesman by highlighting the flaws
and downfalls of each member of the

Essay on Federalist 10 Summary
Summary Analysis of Federalist #10 Summary:
Madison begins perhaps the most famous of the Federalist papers by stating that one of the strongest
arguments in favor of the Constitution is the fact that it establishes a government capable of
controlling the violence and damage caused by factions. Madison defines that factions are groups of
people who gather together to protect and promote their special economic interests and political
opinions. Although these factions are at odds with each other, they frequently work against the public
interests, and infringe upon the rights of others. Both supporters and opponents of the plan are
concerned with the political instability produced by rival factions. The state governments have ...

To Madison, there are only two ways to control a faction: one, to remove its causes and the second to
control its effects. The first is impossible. There are only two ways to remove the causes of a faction:
destroy liberty or give every citizen the same opinions, passions, and interests. Destroying liberty is a
cure worse then the disease itself, and the second is impracticable. The causes of factions are thus part
of the nature of man and we must deal with their effects and accept their existence. The government
created by the Constitution controls the damage caused by such factions. The framers established a
representative form of government, a government in which the many elect the few who govern. Pure
or direct democracies (countries in which all the citizens participate directly in making the laws)
cannot possibly control factious conflicts. This is
because the strongest and largest faction dominates, and there is no way to protect weak factions
against the actions of an obnoxious individual or a strong majority. Direct democracies cannot
effectively protect personal and property rights and have always been characterized by conflict. If the
new plan of government is adopted, Madison hopes that the men elected to office will be wise and
good men the best of America. Theoretically, those who govern should be the least likely to sacrifice
the public good to temporary condition, but the opposite might

Asian Women
Nevertheless, many Asian women in particular struggle to adopt status within the society as they are
not heteronormative enough. There are many reasons why Asian women perform cosmetic surgery in
order to look white in an attempt to attain the framework of heteronormativity. One of the reasons why
Asian women want to look white is through gaining benefit in finding a partner. Based on a study of
692 undergraduates, the study has found that white women are more likely to be asked out compared
to non white women. White women have a staggering percentage of 40 percent while non white

The media seeks to reinforce the framework of heteronormativity through the lifestyle held by
hegemonic social norms. The public s attitude to cosmetic surgery is heavily influenced by the crucial
role of the sociocultural in particular to the promotion of the body and beauty in the mass media
(Moon, 2015). Within the global media, the image of Asian women is fixed towards depicting social
qualities as exotic, feminine, and seductive. Due to these depictions of Asian women in the media,
Asian women are seen as dolls. In addition, Asian women are not portrayed as humans compared to
white women (Hall, 1995). This negative image of observing Asian women as inferior humans further
affect Asian women status within the concept of heteronormativity. Therefore, Asian women perform
cosmetic surgery to look white in order to alter their image and gain their power. The role of the mass
media contributes strong self images that correspond with the consumer culture, in regard to the desire
to buy the ideal beauty commodity (Askegaard, Gertsen, Langer, 2015). Since western beauty is
strongly penetrating within almost every edge of the media in Asia. The beauty ideal of Asia is largely
westernized through the extent where most models or celebrities are western or look western. With

Socrates s Influence On The Youth
Socrates claims that he could not have harmed the youth of Athens willingly, and his claim that all
desire is for the good, are interconnected with each other. For Socrates claim about his influence on
the youth to be true, the claim that everyone desires for virtuous things and not wicked, must also be
true. The Meno states that: It is clear then that those who do not know things to be bad do not desire
what is bad, but they desire those things that they believe to be good but that are in fact bad. It follows
that those who have knowledge of these things and believe them to be good clearly desire good things
(Meno 77e). The key point in the above statement is that sometimes someone does something morally
wrong with the belief that their action are upstanding. They may justify their action by their feelings
that they feel at the moment when otherwise they would know that that action is bad. This is an
acceptable point of view because Socrates never said that it has to be a true belief. As long as one has
it in their mind at the moment that the action is a justified one then they follow Socrates example. The
above quote leave the question then what happens to those that acknowledge the things that they do
are immoral? The answer there are no such people. Comparable to the eastern philosophy of karma,
Socrates proclaims that those who do bad believe that detrimental things will come back to harm them
too. That being harmed leads a person to be miserable and unhappy, and no

Making A Criteria For Accepting Books
in charge to develop a criteria for accepting books. Once this committee evaluates which books could
be a good option to be used, the committee sends a list of the books that the teachers might use. Then
it becomes of matter of each teacher s preference; however, Mrs. Espinoza addressed that changes
have been made since the implementation of the Common Core Standards. What is occurring
nowadays, she said, each teacher take the Common Core and apply it to current lesson plans using the
Basal or whatever they use, and for a whole year, just to see, what they are already doing and how it
falls under the Common Core . Mrs. Valencia pointed that material selection is very different in the
5th and 6th grades. She explained that since it is novel based program, these grades do not follow any
basal reader or reading series type of textbooks. The students are the ones who select the books they
plan to read during the school year. To select these book, the students complete an interest inventory at
the beginning of the school year; then, Mrs. Valencia and the Literature teacher, Mrs. Jacob plan
together the activities that they will deliver; however, the students are guided through the process of
their book selection and they complete this inventory with the teacher guidance; the materials are
based on 5th and 6th grades reading skill levels, the possibility of using their content in the Language
Arts classroom, and if they are a good example of the genre that the material pertain

Essay On German Boy A Child In War
Book Reflection: German Boy: A Child in War
Overview
As the allies and the Soviets continually make ground against Nazi Germany, the realm in which the
term victims would be used equally makes deviations. This state lasted for more than a decade, but is
minutely appreciated by many particularly because many refute to perceive the people of Germany as
victims from any angle. After all, very few casualties were from this region when compared to those
that experienced the full extent of depravity in the hands of the Nazi Germany. The distinction
between the Nazi aspect of this country and the bit of it that did not hold such a burly conviction is an
issue many at the time were not interested appreciating; every German was viewed as a Nazi.
German Boy: A Child in War by Wolfgang Samuel is a book based on the true story of the plight of
the German people as the Third Reich crumbled in the 1940s. It tells of a side of the story that many
readers could not have found anywhere else as not many would tell it as Wolfgang has.
Themes Used
There are voices that need to be heard, there is so much to communicate yet no ears are there to satisfy
such yearnings. The work by Wolfgang revolves around the plight of the people of Germans as the
Third Reich crumbled. It is a side of the repeatedly told tale that very few are aware of; people,
including children like Wolfgang, paying the price for depravities they did not take part in or even
know of. All through the work, the plot

Mechanics: The Stanley Parable has very limited set of control mechanics. The player is given W,A,S,

very sterile and warm colored environments, to messy and colorless places. In some of the
environments there are weenies in the form of light that help guide the player along potential paths
that they can make. Dynamics: I felt very at home with the controls in The Stanley parable. It was
pretty much the standard setup for a pc game. The one Control that is missing that I always want to

An instance of this was when the narrator and I followed the adventure line and then decided to create

may be ahead of all of us if we don t take life into our own hands. We could be spending the rest of
our life living the exact day over and over again waiting for excitement to be presented to us. Noone
wants to live in a groundhogs day. I think that when you notice that you don t have the reins to your
own life you become more motivated to make your own excitement. This is why i enjoyed ignoring
everything that the narrator told me to cause the world to collapse or staying the closet. Narrative The

Unit 21 Data Analysis and Design
All about Databases
Databases, we use them most of the time in our lives from organising files to storing music on our
computers.
What are databases?
Databases are an organised way of storing data.
Before computers many databases were stored in paper folders. The disadvantage of this was that
searching for files was very time consuming.
Now that we have computers life has become much easier for people. We are able to store lots of data
through software, allowing people to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A simple way to show the uses of flat file databases are using spread sheets. Looking at the table
above the rows contain particular information about the person and the columns contain the different
categories, this is known as the field.
What are the benefits of Flat file databases?
The main benefits of using a flat file data base is that they are easy to setup. This means that you don t
need expert knowledge on PCs to understand how to use them. They are also easy to understand as
they have a simple design and layout. Users can access information from them simply when you have
small amounts of data.
What are the negative of using a flat file database?
One of the main negatives about flat file databases are that data is often repeated as there is no
referential integrity. Referential integrity means that there is a direct link of two different attributes in
a database. This helps the computer understand that certain data does not need to be repeated
continuously. Without this, to be able to change information about a particular person or item, then
you have to update each entry you have made about the item. This can also be very time consuming.
Another negative about flat file databases is that you can make errors that can cause many problems
with finding information. Looking at the example below, this table shows the number of purchases a
single customer has

How Can High School Science Teachers Create An...
The number one reason preventing high school science teachers from doing full inquiry based labs is
lack of time. Effective time management is essential in creating an inquiry and argument based
classroom. However, there are many strategies that can help teachers make time for inquiry. One of
these strategies is using essential questions. The teacher can post a starter (essential) question on the
board before the students enter the classroom. This will help avoid in students wasting time asking
what they will be doing in class today. This strategy aids in getting the students to work bell to bell.
Teachers should communicate to their students that class begins on time and they are expected to be
there when the bell rings. Most teachers allow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Classrooms need to be a place where students feel comfortable. Llewellyn believes that a classroom
that is a safe environment can contribute to less anxiety and more effective learning (p. 156). There
are ways to create the right classroom atmosphere. One of these ways is to clean up the clutter. A
cluttered classroom can suggest a sense of disorder and confusion. Textbooks, papers, etc always need
to have an assigned place so the classroom will stay neat and organized. To create energy in the
classroom, teachers should use natural sunlight. Whenever possible, teachers should let the natural
light shine through the window shades. It also helps to show flexibility to rearrange the students desks
periodically. Science classrooms should be nature friendly settings. This means science teachers
should use plants, aquariums, or maybe a mini waterfall to incorporate nature in their classrooms. The
color of the room can also influence certain behaviors during class. For example, earth tone colors
encourage calming emotions. When possible, ask if the walls may be repainted if the walls are white
in the class. Also, Llewellyn believes music has the power to calm the mind, body, and soul (p. 157).
Although these are very helpful ways to create the right atmosphere in the classroom, no one
classroom setting fits all

The Pros And Methods Of Recidivism
As a nation that constantly strives to progress, there is a consensus that those who commit unlawful
behavior should be sent to correctional institutions, yet the United States government fails to question
whether their traditional prison system legitimately works. One method scholars utilize to measure a
nation s public safety and criminal justice effectiveness is by analyzing the recidivism rate, which is
defined by the National Institute of Justice as the number of released inmates that return to crime
within three years. According to sociologist Victor L Shammas, for every 100,000 people in the
United States, there are 707 incarcerated, with over 75% released relapsing back into crime. The way
minor criminals are stripped of opportunities within society following their release turns them to
harder crime, which transforms into a viscous cycle. It appears that Norway has found the correct
formula for breaking this cycle, a nation in which for every 100,000 people, only 75 are imprisoned,
and only 20% released relapse into crime. The 2016 Legatum Prosperity Index rated Norway as the
sixth safest country globally, and the United States as the fifty second, clearly demonstrating that the
United States government needs to reform its prison policy. Norway s method of imprisoning a
significant portion of offenders into minimum security prisons decreases the crime rate through
implementation of educational and occupational rehabilitation programs and quality healthcare during

Appeal to Emotions is when an ad is created specifically for drawing on the viewers emotions in order
to get them to make a donation to a specific organization or cause. The first thing you notice when
looking at this advertisement is the sad expression on the child and the tears running down its face.
When most people see the face of a sad child they begin to feel empathy for the child or feel sadness
themselves about the situation this child is in. Because of these feelings of empathy there is a good
chance this will make them want to help the child if they can. The viewer would most likely then

Analysis Of Nathaniel Bacon s The Name Of The People
In Bacon s Declaration in the Name of the People , Nathaniel Bacon lists every major offense of Sir
William Berkeley, many of which collide with one another to display how the governor s actions and
inactions built upon each other to create turmoil for the people of Virginia. However, Berkeley
defends himself and proclaims Bacon a traitor in, The Declaration and Remonstrance of Sir William
Berkeley his most sacred Majesties Governor and Captain Generall of Virginia . In order to gain the
king s favor, both men write separate declarations, but one has everything to lose while the other has
everything to gain.
The first of the offenses listed by Bacon is the demanding of unjust taxes which are not being used to
better the colony at least not for the underclass; thus, Berkeley has also been accused of abusing his
power as governor. With the purpose of monetary gain, Bacon applies for a trading license but is
denied by Berkeley and the council, which consists of many of Berkeley s cronies. This leads Bacon
to make the allegation that Berkeley has made a monopoly of the beaver trade which is true but
Berkeley only denied Bacon s request because he knew Bacon wanted more power and where there is
money, there is power.
In the midst of the two men s quarreling, the lower classes of Virginia are demanding land. They begin
to migrate to Indian Territory and are consequently murdered by the Indians. Though there is an army
at his command, Berkeley does not use them against the

Commentary
The article discusses the environmental issues that Australia faces as a result of numerous companies
emitting greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide. Thanks to that, a negative externality occurs
because the production of goods and services in Australia has a major effect upon a third party. For
example, a company is set up next to a residential area; this will have a negative effect on the residents
living in that region. For this reason the Australian government is deciding whether to impose taxes on
carbon emissions for the worst polluters
Figure 1 shows that the marginal private costs of the Australian firms are below the marginal social
costs, the pollution created has caused an extra cost to the society, such as respiratory ... Show more

Welfare Loss In figure 2, the deadweight burden had been reduced, because the tax is not identical to
the external cost, therefore the externality has not been eliminated, but it is less than previously when
there was no government intervention.
Although taxes are seen as a way of making polluters pay, there are some problems with this solution.
First, the Australian government will find it very difficult to measure accurately the pollution created
by firms and give a value to it, in which it can be regained by tax. Second, it is also very hard to
identify which firms are polluting and to what extent are they responsible for the pollution. Third, it is
often argued that tax do not actually stop the pollution from taking place. Furthermore, putting taxes
on those firms will lead to inflation because they have higher costs to pay for, and to compensate for
that, they will increase consumer prices.
The shortage in domestic investment could lead to the closure of many firms or movement abroad and
that will doubtless cause unemployment in Australia. Furthermore, while Australia imposes this tax to
help alleviate a global concern, it doesn t necessarily mean its competitors will and the extra
production costs for Australian firms will give it an unfair disadvantage. The

Themes Of Flowers For Algernon
Flowers for Algernon Essay by Matthew Duran
Flowers for Algernon Essay by Matthew Duran In Flowers for Algernon, numerous themes appear
throughout Charlie Gordon s journey. Charlie Gordon, the story s protagonist, is considered to be used
as a test subject for an original experiment that can potentially change the face of science. After many
tests, Charlie undergoes an operation, as a result, a slow progression begins in his overall intelligence
levels.
In the excerpt Flowers for Algernon written by Daniel Keyes, the theme conveyed is that people
should try to modify nature s course for the benefit of science. Daniel Keyes first expresses this by the
characters dialogue, at first when Charlie spoke, he was lost, he spoke with no emotion and did not
truly nor fully understand the concept of his conversations, but after the surgery, he communicated
with a passion he knew what he was saying and could get is point across to other people. The second
thing Keyes asserts is Algernon, without the operation Algernon would just be a normal mouse eating
and sleeping, doing what all other pet mice do, but with the surgery, Algernon became important, he
was the foundation for the experiment and there was a more important point in his life, but Algernon
did eventually decline and pass away but without him the experiment would have been in question and
Algernon helped answer those questions, Algernon also served as a friend and representation of
Charlie, this is due to the fact that both Algernon and Charlie were the only ones who received this
special surgery, so in a sense they both were connected. Charlie really loved Algernon and Algernon
sort of understood that, him and Charlie were connected mentally and physically, with our the
operation this bond would no have been possible so this whole operation helped Charlie receive a
good friend not a regular companion. The final example Keyes provides is Charlie Gordon s progress
reports, at first, Charlie wrote incorrectly and with no emotion, bland, but after the operation, he wrote
correctly and with feelings because he was experiencing life he felt sadness, a bit of happiness and
love something he could not have felt without the surgery, people may argue that he

The issue of women involved in armed conflict has been a reoccurring problem in countries that are
plagued by war for decades. Due to this problem women are taken in by soldiers and are sexually
violated, and sold as sex slaves. Also they are faced with economic, abduction s, and healthcare
problems. They have a lack nutrition, physiological problems such as depression, and sexual
transmitted diseases. After being sexually violated they have become outsider and are later rejected by
their families and society. In many countries that in present day are in war face many of these issues
and they are reoccurring events that happen every day in these peoples lives. The most well known

Effect Of Emulsifier On Ice Cream
In this experiment, we would like to prepare ice cream by using milk, cream, sucrose, stabilizer and
emulsifier. We will prepare ice cream by using two sets of formula. Group B1 and B2 will add the
emulsifier into their ice cream whereas group B3 and B4 do not add any emulsifier into ice cream. In
this experiment, our group (B3) will prepare the ice cream without adding emulsifier. Therefore, we
can study the effect of adding emulsifier on the ice cream. Firstly, we will mix the ingredients in the
orderly manner by using high speed mixer. The stabilizer is not added in this step, it is added only
during pasteurization process. After mixing, we will carry out pasteurization process. This step is
conducted by heating the ice cream mix at 71oC ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The mouth coating is affected by three dimensional network structures of air cells. Emulsifier can
provide semblance of richness sensation of mouth coating by contributing to a formation of small,
uniformly dispersed air cell and protects against texture deterioration due to heat shock. (Clark,
Costello, Drake, Bodyfelt, 2009). We also study the defects present in our ice cream. Based on table 5,
both ice cream with and without emulsifier have defects in its flavor. Both ice cream taste too sweet.
This is due to imbalance of the ingredients used during ice cream making. This defects can be
overcome by reduce the amount of sucrose used. For defects in body, ice cream with emulsifier has
gummy body. It is an indication of pasty and sticky body. This is probably due to over stabilization,
very high solid content and low overrun. Excessive stabilizer and sucrose content will contribute to
this defect. For the ice cream without emulsifier, it has a heavy body. It is indication of soggy, doughy
and putty like body. The factor causing this defect is almost same as gummy body which is high total
solid, over stabilization and low overrun. Therefore, we can overcome both defects by reducing
amount of stabilizer and sucrose as well as incorporate more air into ice cream mix during freezing

When making objectives for the next year they should be agreed upon by both parties.
If a manager has 20 employees this doesn t leave enough time to do a proper evaluation and they
really only have 9 months to base their evaluations on. I suspect managers with large number of
employees to evaluate will not remember what you have achieve unless was stellar or grievous.
Therefore, it would be wise for employees to keep their own records of agreements and deliveries to
those pre set agreements and objectives.
How Evaluation are Determined
In the previous year managers and employees agree upon performance objectives for the next year.
They have a mid year review to talk about how well those objectives are being met in the June or July
time frame. In September, depending on how well an employee is meeting those objectives, a manager
must come up with a justifiable performance rating.
Comp ratio describes the position of an employee s salary relative to the salary range midpoint. The
salary range includes a minimum, a midpoint and a maximum. The midpoint represents a 1.0 (100%).
Comp ratio is calculated using the employee s salary divided by the midpoint of the salary range. If
the CR is .90 (90%), the employee is to be paid 10% below the salary range midpoint. If the CR is
1.00 (100%), the employee is to be paid at the midpoint of the salary range. If the CR is 1.15 (115%),

Finding Truth In The Allegory Of The Cave By Plato
The Allegory of the cave is a story written by Plato an ancient philosopher who presented this work in
The Republic to describe the truth about reality. Plato believed that reality and the truth are both hard
to find. One must find knowledge of himself, discovering truth that is a process and to make known
self understanding. Plato wrote this story as a discussion between two greek philosophers, Socrates
and Glaucon. Socrates asks Glaucon what would it be like if people lived in the dark where all they
could only see shadows from the fire behind them. One of Plato s first points found in The Allegory of
the Cave is that the pursuit of truth grants man knowledge of himself. Man can never force someone
into recognizing light and or truth . Socrates says to Glaucon, And supposed once more, that he is
reluctantly dragged up a steep and rugged ascent, and held fast until he s forced into the presence of
the sun himself, is he not likely to be pained and irritated? (Plato 3). Once someone is introduced the
light for the first time it will be difficult to understand truth ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It takes both time and effort. Finding truth can be hard and could be hidden in the deepest darkest of
places. In this quote , Socrates says to Glaucon, He will require to grow accustomed to the sight of the
upper world. And first he will see shadows best, next the reflections of me and other objects in the
water, and then the objects themselves; then he will gaze upon the light of the moon and the stars and
the spangled heaven. And he will see the sky and stars by night better than the sun or the light of the
sun by day (Plato 3). It takes time to see truth, but once one does they will be shocked at what comes
with it. Obviously, maturing takes time and more important experience. Plato already shared with
readers that the truth journey must be a personal one. Therefore there is no set way to gain knowledge,
thus, man cannot

The Visit by Friedrich Durrenmatt
Friedrich Durrenmatt, like Samuel Beckett, became a prominent writer that wrote about human nature
after World War II. The Visit, for instance, is about an impoverished town that is in need of money.
The town realizes on Ill, who is a main character, to call a friend and ask for a favor, and he does.
Claire, Ill s friend, places an ironic twist on the requirement in order to get the money, which is
someone must kill Ill, but by the end of the play someone does kill Ill. In general, the play depicts the
idea that it is human nature to do anything in order to survive. Due to Friedrich Durrenmatt s various
techniques when writing the play, the reader gets a town comparable to Germany during the 1930s and
1940s. Friedrich Durrenmatt s techniques were used to foreshadow the play and to depict the
condition and choices of Germany before and during World War II from a logical view. For example,
the black panther, which is one of the most profound symbols throughout the play, is Claire s pet. She
brings it with her to Guellen in a cage. The panther is the symbolic foreshadow of Ill s life in this play,
and Claire refers to Ill several times by the nickname black panther . The butler proclaims, The black
panther escaped, Madam. (58) The black panther escapes around the same time she offers the million
dollar. Like the black panther, Ill is trying to escape Guellen before someone kills him, which is
similar to Jews trying to escape Germany during the 1930s before Hitler s

The House Of Mirth And The Awakening Essay
While feminist ideologies in both The House of Mirth and The Awakening are quite controversial and
maybe to some nonexistent, it is quite evident that there are these two women who want to fight
against their societal norms and patriarchal society. Lily Bart from House of Mirth tries to manipulate
societal norms in order to achieve success, and Edna Pontellier from The Awakening actively tries to
become and independent woman. In the end, I think they both succeed in becoming independent
women and ideal feminists because of how they fight against their societies. Even though both Edna
and Lily are suppressed by their society, they not only use their knowledge of society to fight against
it, but they prove in the end of both novels that they are truly independent women and can be just as
free willed as the men. Both Edna Pontellier and Lily Bart understand what society expects of them,
and they use that knowledge later to manipulate conventional societal norms to try to become
individuals. Albeit, it does not end ideally for them, but throughout both The Awakening and The
House of Mirth Edna and Lily fight the suppressive nature of their societies. Edna is different from
Lily in this sense, however, because Edna eventually actively rejects the ideal mother woman. When
the novel first begins, we get a glimpse of what Edna was like when she was younger, which continues
during her marriage to Mr. Pontellier. Knowing what she was like earlier on in her life shows how she

Similarities Between Tattoos And Motion Pictures
Tattoos versus Motion Picture
Arguably what comes to mind when a person is intrigued by a tattoo, is curiosity behind the purpose
of it, and most importantly the reasoning. Like a motion picture or short film, there has to be a story
behind it, otherwise there would be confusion. Although tattoos and motion pictures both share many
similarities in story lines, genres, and depth, they have a plethora of differences.
Undoubtedly, these two concepts share story lines. Moreover, the process in development is very
different. Tattoos have a story line that is commonly very sentimental, the meaning is real and deep,
which is why an individual permanently places such kinds of expression on their skin. Although, not
all tattoos are this way, some tattoos might not have any meaning and have been placed upon the skin
for no logical reason. Tattoos have a very different development process, and often mean more to
individuals than movies. Often times when someone is watching a preview to a new movie, their
involvement falls deeper the more they find themselves fascinated by the story line. The story line is
what draws them in, and the more it relates personally, or strikes their imagination on a pathway of
fascination, the more likely they are to continue watching that genre of movie. Therefore, movies only
come to an in mind standpoint, although it has a story line, the display is not nearly as permanent as a
tattoo would be considered.
Arguably both areas have increasingly changed

or to make someone or something different. When used in its noun form, change can be the money
someone gives you back when you pay more money than an item costs to buy or a process by which
something becomes different, like there is going to be a change in the weather. These are denotative or

Don t resist them that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in
whatever way they like. If we start manipulating or trying to control destiny in life we may change the
mysterious flow that controls the way our life should go. Change can be the natural a way of talking or
thinking in an easy natural way, without any pauses or difficulties of life. Things don t have to change
the world to be important. ~ Steve Jobs Importance is relative to the person who is viewing it at a
given moment in time. Change can affect one person and it can be as monumental to that person as a
revolution to the rest of the world. Change can be intimate and personal. Some change is private.
Nelson Mandela once said, Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the
world. Knowledge is the foundation of education, and the tool people need to bring about a difference
in the way the world thinks. Mandela is best known for working to free the blacks in South Africa by
battling peacefully for the rights of the people. After years of personal sacrifice fighting for

The Pros Of Dunkirk
German military successes in the spring of 1940 saw the British Expeditionary Force (BEF), along
with French and Belgian troops, surrounded at the beaches of Dunkirk. With the possibility of a
breakout impossible, the defeated armies were eventually evacuated to the British Isles during
Operation Dynamo. While the withdrawal of British Forces from Continental Europe marked a
military defeat of the BEF, news media surrounding the event showed a story opposite to this. Rather,
the Dunkirk evacuation was presented as a miraculous victory which was achieved through the
resilience and ingenuity of the British spirit. This heavily propagandized viewpoint, although created
initially to maintain homefront moral amidst German successes, would continue to exist into the post
war years and help contribute towards the creation of the myth that Britain, during late 1940 and early
1941, stood as the lone Allied bastion against Nazi Germany. However, in the decades following the
Second World War, historians/many have challenged the contemporary British accounts of Dunkirk by
offering a less romanticized view of the events; thereby challenging the Anglocentric perspective
Dunkirk. [INSERT THESIS STATEMENT HERE] As a evacuation which occurred due to the success
of german troops in the battle of France, the perspectives of Dunkirk in regards to wether it was a
success, the little ships, and the overall role of French forces has largley evolved from contemporary
accounts during the twentieth

Governmental Involvement In The War On Drugs
As a person uses drugs, the brain adjusts to excesses of dopamine, subsequently reducing the amounts,
in turn lowering the ability of cells in the reward circuits in response. Consequently this reduces the
high quality in comparison to the initial usage. The effect, known as tolerance, causes users to increase
their dosage to achieve a similar high leading to addiction. Long term use causes a change in chemical
systems, and massive health issues such as birth defects, HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis and other infectious
diseases, cardiovascular effects, respiratory effects, gastrointestinal effects, musculoskeletal effects,
other organ damage, neurological effects, mental health effects, possible amputations due to infected
cites, and death (WebMD). So why would anyone do drugs? Other than coping mechanisms, curiosity,
and peer pressure, governmental involvement may indirectly help stabilize drug trade, leading to more
drug popularity. While genetic and environmental factors such as economic status, etc., interact with
critical development stages concerning addiction, the factors above are a general overview found in
textbook. More concerning however, is governmental involvement. As their presence contributes
largely to addiction, such as the legalization of alchol, nicotine, and prescription drugs, the media,
glorifying usage, and their strategies in the War on Drugs. Legal intoxication are a huge problem as
the drugs are either completely legal or not commonly prohibited, which can

Essay on Carol Ann Duffy and Liz Lochhead Explore Memories
Compare and contrast how Duffy and Lochhead explore memories
Both Carol Ann Duffy and Liz Lochhead provide an exploration of their childhood memories, and
how these memories have changed and developed with age into analysis of social expectations of men
and women in the 1960 s. In Duffys poem Litany and Lochheads poem 1953, both poets reflect on
their childish perceptions of their parents conformity to social convention. Duffy and Lochhead
excellently implement a dramatic monologue form to convey their feelings towards their parents
conventional roles within the home. In Duffys Litany, the poem is narrated by Duffys younger self
who naively recounts women obsessed with social class and identity. The irregularity of the ... Show

Both poets expertly use language to explore their childhood memories and communicate their feelings
towards them now as adults. Duffys title Litany is ambiguous, she skilfully leaves allows the reader to
provide their own interpretations of the title and its meaning and how it relates to the poem, this
allows the reader to connect with the poem on a personal level. Duffys use of negative word functions
in the second stanza disclose Duffys own conception towards these women. Duffys reference to their
marriages as terrible are a clear indication of her distaste towards the social expectations of women to
marry, care for their husbands and children and basically never really fulfill very much in their lives.
Duffys imaginative description of the woman s hands as sharp reveal her impression of them as acute
and incisive creatures, consumed with a desire to portray the image of the model house wife , with
very little other ambition. Duffy superbly transmits a tone of pity towards these women as their only
real accomplishments will be owning candlewick bedspread three piece suite display cabinet .
Furthermore through her creative use of very descriptive verbs, which greatly appeal to the readers
sences, Duffy conveys a tone of distain towards these women. Throughout Litany Duffy creates
fantastic images for the reader from her imaginative use of imargery.

Racial Stereotyping Of African Americans Essay
Introduction What does it mean to be stereotyped? The definition of stereotype is Stereotyping may be
defined as the tendency to attribute generalized and simplified characteristics to groups of people in
the form of verbal labels, and to act towards the members of those groups in terms of those labels
(Kanahara, 2006) When asked to pick a topic and do a research study, I decided that the topic of racial
stereotyping would be efficient. As I began to watch movies I started to see a trend. I saw African
Americans being portrayed as being violent, uneducated, and ghetto. European Americans were
portrayed as being self absorbed, materialistic, and privileged. What I want to know is if different
races are being stereotyped in media for the sake of entertainment. Over time it seemed like the media
would perceive African Americans as thugs. Not only were African American s stereotyped as thugs,
but they re also seen as being ghetto. African American s are not the only ones stereotyped, but so are
Hispanics and Asians. Hispanics in media are portrayed as being illegal immigrants, uneducated, and
housekeepers. Asians are portrayed as foreigners, geeks, and kung fu fighters. Literature Review A
study over social issues done by Mastro mentions that in our history we have yet to experience a
world free from complications of race. One thing she mentions that contributes to race complications
is the mass media. Not only are we influenced by movies and television, but from the

With many challenges, the Emergency Department must operate efficiently in an effort to deliver quality care in a timely manner while meeting the patient demand based on volume size (Richard Jarvis, 2016). If there is an unbalanced match with the patient demand with the Emergency Department capacity and staffing to deliver care within a timely manner, it can reflect on the patient flow and can create crowding and long throughput times (Richard Jarvis, 2016). As a result, it can lead to poor quality of care and patient outcomes (Richard Jarvis, 2016). On the other hand, the shortest throughput time while operating efficiently with the needed staffing can lead to good patient satisfaction and better outcomes (Richard Jarvis, 2016). ... • 5. Kingdom Of Heaven Analysis The movie Kingdom of Heaven tries to portray the crusades that occurred in the 12th century while at the same time describing the middle age era. Some of the movie content contains truth of that period as well as fiction. The movie follows Balian of Ibelin and his journey from being a blacksmith to defender of Jerusalem. Although the movie has manipulated some of the real events to appeal to a broader audience, make it more Hollywood like, it does a decent job in portraying the battle over Jerusalem and some of the circumstances around it. The church played a significant role during the middle ages. In fact, the church reached the height of its power in the high middle ages: the 11th, 12th, 13th centuries. It was during this period that the crusade battles occurred. The movie tries to portray the events that led to one of the battles, the Battle of Hattin 1187. The idea that God wills war was apparent in both the movie and real life. Crusaders became consumed with fighting and killing the Muslims which was clear in Guy de Lusignan and Reynald de Chatilon actions. On the other hand, Baldwin and Balian, in the movie, represented the crusaders who wanted to maintain a peaceful relationship between the Muslims and the Christians. Another concept that appears in the movie that is linked to reality is the ideas of becoming a crusader in order to repent your sins. One of the main reason why Balian became a crusader is to repent his sin, of killing a priest, and his wife ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Essay On The Confessions By St. Augustine In St. Augustine s The Confessions, St. Augustine discusses his interpretation of evil and the ways in which it changed throughout the course of his life. Prior to becoming a Christian, Augustine viewed evil from the Manichean perspective as a substance or mass that opposed good. Later in life, when Augustine converted to Christianity, he discovered that evil was not a substance, but rather the absence of good. I found Augustine s Christian view of evil helpful in understanding real life evils because it provides optimism in that it shows that everything was made for good. St. Augustine first began investigating evil in Carthage when he stumbled upon the Manicheans. At this point in Augustine s life, he was in search of truth and began exploring different philosophies that would provide him with answers. After observing the beliefs of the Manicheans, Augustine found their views enlightening and started incorporating their ideas into his own life. The Manicheans believed evil was a substance that opposed good. Augustine describes how they envisioned evil as a dark, deformed mass, [] creeping about through the earth (5.10.20). They challenged the Christian belief that God was all powerful by saying that if this were true, then evil would not exist because God would have destroyed it. These views repelled Augustine from the Catholic faith. When reflecting on these views later in life, Augustine explains their flaws and how his power of sight was restricted to seeing ... The medium, large, and super size sizes were attempts from the fast food corporations to maximise on small minded Americans willing to believe anything that is said by advertisements. Essay on Federalist 10 Summary Summary Analysis of Federalist #10 Summary: Madison begins perhaps the most famous of the Federalist papers by stating that one of the strongest arguments in favor of the Constitution is the fact that it establishes a government capable of controlling the violence and damage caused by factions. Madison defines that factions are groups of people who gather together to protect and promote their special economic interests and political opinions. Although these factions are at odds with each other, they frequently work against the public interests, and infringe upon the rights of others. To Madison, there are only two ways to control a faction: one, to remove its causes and the second to control its effects. The first is impossible. There are only two ways to remove the causes of a faction: destroy liberty or give every citizen the same opinions, passions, and interests. Destroying liberty is a cure worse then the disease itself, and the second is impracticable. The causes of factions are thus part of the nature of man and we must deal with their effects and accept their existence. The government created by the Constitution controls the damage caused by such factions. The framers established a representative form of government, a government in which the many elect the few who govern. Pure or direct democracies (countries in which all the citizens participate directly in making the laws) cannot possibly control factious conflicts. This is because the strongest and largest faction dominates, and there is no way to protect weak factions against the actions of an obnoxious individual or a strong majority. Direct democracies cannot effectively protect personal and property rights and have always been characterized by conflict. If the new plan of government is adopted, Madison hopes that the men elected to office will be wise and good men the best of America. Theoretically, those who govern should be the least likely to sacrifice the public good to temporary condition, but the opposite might ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 22. Socrates s Influence On The Youth Socrates claims that he could not have harmed the youth of Athens willingly, and his claim that all desire is for the good, are interconnected with each other. For Socrates claim about his influence on the youth to be true, the claim that everyone desires for virtuous things and not wicked, must also be true. The Meno states that: It is clear then that those who do not know things to be bad do not desire what is bad, but they desire those things that they believe to be good but that are in fact bad. It follows that those who have knowledge of these things and believe them to be good clearly desire good things (Meno 77e). The key point in the above statement is that sometimes someone does something morally wrong with the belief that their action are upstanding. They may justify their action by their feelings that they feel at the moment when otherwise they would know that that action is bad. This is an acceptable point of view because Socrates never said that it has to be a true belief. As long as one has it in their mind at the moment that the action is a justified one then they follow Socrates example. The above quote leave the question then what happens to those that acknowledge the things that they do are immoral? The answer there are no such people. There are ways to create the right classroom atmosphere. One of these ways is to clean up the clutter. A cluttered classroom can suggest a sense of disorder and confusion. Textbooks, papers, etc always need to have an assigned place so the classroom will stay neat and organized. To create energy in the classroom, teachers should use natural sunlight. Whenever possible, teachers should let the natural light shine through the window shades. It also helps to show flexibility to rearrange the students desks periodically. Science classrooms should be nature friendly settings. This means science teachers should use plants, aquariums, or maybe a mini waterfall to incorporate nature in their classrooms. The color of the room can also influence certain behaviors during class. For example, earth tone colors encourage calming emotions. When possible, ask if the walls may be repainted if the walls are white in the class. Also, Llewellyn believes music has the power to calm the mind, body, and soul (p. 157). The Pros And Methods Of Recidivism As a nation that constantly strives to progress, there is a consensus that those who commit unlawful behavior should be sent to correctional institutions, yet the United States government fails to question whether their traditional prison system legitimately works. One method scholars utilize to measure a nation s public safety and criminal justice effectiveness is by analyzing the recidivism rate, which is defined by the National Institute of Justice as the number of released inmates that return to crime within three years. According to sociologist Victor L Shammas, for every 100,000 people in the United States, there are 707 incarcerated, with over 75% released relapsing back into crime. The way minor criminals are stripped of opportunities within society following their release turns them to harder crime, which transforms into a viscous cycle. It appears that Norway has found the correct formula for breaking this cycle, a nation in which for every 100,000 people, only 75 are imprisoned, and only 20% released relapse into crime. The 2016 Legatum Prosperity Index rated Norway as the sixth safest country globally, and the United States as the fifty second, clearly demonstrating that the United States government needs to reform its prison policy. Norway s method of imprisoning a significant portion of offenders into minimum security prisons decreases the crime rate through implementation of educational and occupational rehabilitation programs and quality healthcare during ... In order to gain the king s favor, both men write separate declarations, but one has everything to lose while the other has everything to gain. The first of the offenses listed by Bacon is the demanding of unjust taxes which are not being used to better the colony at least not for the underclass; thus, Berkeley has also been accused of abusing his power as governor. With the purpose of monetary gain, Bacon applies for a trading license but is denied by Berkeley and the council, which consists of many of Berkeley s cronies. Thanks to that, a negative externality occurs because the production of goods and services in Australia has a major effect upon a third party. Although taxes are seen as a way of making polluters pay, there are some problems with this solution. First, the Australian government will find it very difficult to measure accurately the pollution created by firms and give a value to it, in which it can be regained by tax. Second, it is also very hard to identify which firms are polluting and to what extent are they responsible for the pollution. Third, it is often argued that tax do not actually stop the pollution from taking place. Furthermore, putting taxes on those firms will lead to inflation because they have higher costs to pay for, and to compensate for that, they will increase consumer prices. The shortage in domestic investment could lead to the closure of many firms or movement abroad and that will doubtless cause unemployment in Australia. Furthermore, while Australia imposes this tax to help alleviate a global concern, it doesn t necessarily mean its competitors will and the extra production costs for Australian firms will give it an unfair disadvantage. Themes Of Flowers For Algernon Flowers for Algernon Essay by Matthew Duran Flowers for Algernon Essay by Matthew Duran In Flowers for Algernon, numerous themes appear throughout Charlie Gordon s journey. Charlie Gordon, the story s protagonist, is considered to be used as a test subject for an original experiment that can potentially change the face of science. After many tests, Charlie undergoes an operation, as a result, a slow progression begins in his overall intelligence levels. In the excerpt Flowers for Algernon written by Daniel Keyes, the theme conveyed is that people should try to modify nature s course for the benefit of science. Daniel Keyes first expresses this by the characters dialogue, at first when Charlie spoke, he was lost, he spoke with no emotion and did not truly nor fully understand the concept of his conversations, but after the surgery, he communicated with a passion he knew what he was saying and could get is point across to other people. The second thing Keyes asserts is Algernon, without the operation Algernon would just be a normal mouse eating and sleeping, doing what all other pet mice do, but with the surgery, Algernon became important, he was the foundation for the experiment and there was a more important point in his life, but Algernon did eventually decline and pass away but without him the experiment would have been in question and Algernon helped answer those questions, Algernon also served as a friend and representation of Charlie, this is due to the fact that both Algernon and Charlie were the only ones who received this special surgery, so in a sense they both were connected. Charlie really loved Algernon and Algernon sort of understood that, him and Charlie were connected mentally and physically, with our the operation this bond would no have been possible so this whole operation helped Charlie receive a good friend not a regular companion. The final example Keyes provides is Charlie Gordon s progress reports, at first, Charlie wrote incorrectly and with no emotion, bland, but after the operation, he wrote correctly and with feelings because he was experiencing life he felt sadness, a bit of happiness and love something he could not have felt without the surgery, people may argue that he ... In this experiment, our group (B3) will prepare the ice cream without adding emulsifier. Therefore, we can study the effect of adding emulsifier on the ice cream. Firstly, we will mix the ingredients in the orderly manner by using high speed mixer. The stabilizer is not added in this step, it is added only during pasteurization process. Emulsifier can provide semblance of richness sensation of mouth coating by contributing to a formation of small, uniformly dispersed air cell and protects against texture deterioration due to heat shock. (Clark, Costello, Drake, Bodyfelt, 2009). We also study the defects present in our ice cream. Based on table 5, both ice cream with and without emulsifier have defects in its flavor. Both ice cream taste too sweet. This is due to imbalance of the ingredients used during ice cream making. This defects can be overcome by reduce the amount of sucrose used. For defects in body, ice cream with emulsifier has gummy body. It is an indication of pasty and sticky body. This is probably due to over stabilization, very high solid content and low overrun. Excessive stabilizer and sucrose content will contribute to this defect. For the ice cream without emulsifier, it has a heavy body. It is indication of soggy, doughy and putty like body. Finding Truth In The Allegory Of The Cave By Plato The Allegory of the cave is a story written by Plato an ancient philosopher who presented this work in The Republic to describe the truth about reality. Plato believed that reality and the truth are both hard to find. One must find knowledge of himself, discovering truth that is a process and to make known self understanding. Plato wrote this story as a discussion between two greek philosophers, Socrates and Glaucon. Socrates asks Glaucon what would it be like if people lived in the dark where all they could only see shadows from the fire behind them. One of Plato s first points found in The Allegory of the Cave is that the pursuit of truth grants man knowledge of himself. Man can never force someone into recognizing light and or truth . Socrates says to Glaucon, And supposed once more, that he is reluctantly dragged up a steep and rugged ascent, and held fast until he s forced into the presence of the sun himself, is he not likely to be pained and irritated? The Visit, for instance, is about an impoverished town that is in need of money. The town realizes on Ill, who is a main character, to call a friend and ask for a favor, and he does. Claire, Ill s friend, places an ironic twist on the requirement in order to get the money, which is someone must kill Ill, but by the end of the play someone does kill Ill. In general, the play depicts the idea that it is human nature to do anything in order to survive. Due to Friedrich Durrenmatt s various techniques when writing the play, the reader gets a town comparable to Germany during the 1930s and 1940s. Friedrich Durrenmatt s techniques were used to foreshadow the play and to depict the condition and choices of Germany before and during World War II from a logical view. For example, the black panther, which is one of the most profound symbols throughout the play, is Claire s pet. She brings it with her to Guellen in a cage. The panther is the symbolic foreshadow of Ill s life in this play, and Claire refers to Ill several times by the nickname black panther . The butler proclaims, The black panther escaped, Madam. Lily Bart from House of Mirth tries to manipulate societal norms in order to achieve success, and Edna Pontellier from The Awakening actively tries to become and independent woman. In the end, I think they both succeed in becoming independent women and ideal feminists because of how they fight against their societies. Even though both Edna and Lily are suppressed by their society, they not only use their knowledge of society to fight against it, but they prove in the end of both novels that they are truly independent women and can be just as free willed as the men. Both Edna Pontellier and Lily Bart understand what society expects of them, and they use that knowledge later to manipulate conventional societal norms to try to become individuals. Albeit, it does not end ideally for them, but throughout both The Awakening and The House of Mirth Edna and Lily fight the suppressive nature of their societies. Edna is different from Lily in this sense, however, because Edna eventually actively rejects the ideal mother woman. Similarities Between Tattoos And Motion Pictures Tattoos versus Motion Picture Arguably what comes to mind when a person is intrigued by a tattoo, is curiosity behind the purpose of it, and most importantly the reasoning. Like a motion picture or short film, there has to be a story behind it, otherwise there would be confusion. Although tattoos and motion pictures both share many similarities in story lines, genres, and depth, they have a plethora of differences. Undoubtedly, these two concepts share story lines. Moreover, the process in development is very different. Tattoos have a story line that is commonly very sentimental, the meaning is real and deep, which is why an individual permanently places such kinds of expression on their skin. Although, not all tattoos are this way, some tattoos might not have any meaning and have been placed upon the skin for no logical reason. Tattoos have a very different development process, and often mean more to individuals than movies. Often times when someone is watching a preview to a new movie, their involvement falls deeper the more they find themselves fascinated by the story line. The story line is what draws them in, and the more it relates personally, or strikes their imagination on a pathway of fascination, the more likely they are to continue watching that genre of movie. With the possibility of a breakout impossible, the defeated armies were eventually evacuated to the British Isles during Operation Dynamo. While the withdrawal of British Forces from Continental Europe marked a military defeat of the BEF, news media surrounding the event showed a story opposite to this. Rather, the Dunkirk evacuation was presented as a miraculous victory which was achieved through the resilience and ingenuity of the British spirit. This heavily propagandized viewpoint, although created initially to maintain homefront moral amidst German successes, would continue to exist into the post war years and help contribute towards the creation of the myth that Britain, during late 1940 and early 1941, stood as the lone Allied bastion against Nazi Germany. • 50. Racial Stereotyping Of African Americans Essay Introduction What does it mean to be stereotyped? The definition of stereotype is Stereotyping may be defined as the tendency to attribute generalized and simplified characteristics to groups of people in the form of verbal labels, and to act towards the members of those groups in terms of those labels (Kanahara, 2006) When asked to pick a topic and do a research study, I decided that the topic of racial stereotyping would be efficient. As I began to watch movies I started to see a trend. I saw African Americans being portrayed as being violent, uneducated, and ghetto. European Americans were portrayed as being self absorbed, materialistic, and privileged. What I want to know is if different races are being stereotyped in media for the sake of entertainment. Over time it seemed like the media would perceive African Americans as thugs. Not only were African American s stereotyped as thugs, but they re also seen as being ghetto. African American s are not the only ones stereotyped, but so are Hispanics and Asians. Hispanics in media are portrayed as being illegal immigrants, uneducated, and housekeepers.
