Burtynky s Irony In Relation To The Sublime
A resolution to this problem, and a further refinement of Burtynsky s relation to the sublime, appears
in Timothy Morton s discussion of irony. Morton writes that, Irony involves distancing and
displacement, a moving from place to place, or even from homey place into lonely space (Morton 98).
This description of irony provides useful tools for understanding how Burtysnky s photographs in OIL
function in relation to the sublime. Though these descriptors typify many of Burtysnky s photographs,
examining his aerial photographs of the Alberta Oil Sands, such as Alberta Oil Sands #10 Fort
McMurray, Alberta, Canada, 2007 (Fig. 3) will be most productive. These photographs are devoid of
humanity yet replete with their residuum tailings ponds. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Returning to Benjamin, he writes that, Even the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking
in one element: its presence in time and space (Benjamin II) which corroborates the speaker of the
poem s stance that, Meaning takes place in time (Solie 38). Although Benjamin s thoughts focus more
on the ubiquity and lack of authenticity that occurs with mass image production and reproduction,
Bitumen shares some of these concerns, tracing the development of modern proliferation of images
from the first imagining techniques of Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, to the photochrome postcards (32) of
late 19th century, up to video sharing websites. The speaker of Bitumen looks to construct a timeline
of image mediation alongside the aestheticization of catastrophe. Even calamitous weather events,
which Bitumen ties to the unseasonable (34) weather that results from global warming, becomes a
sublime, photogenic spectacle with the ubiquity and quotidian character of modern image and film:
tornados on YouTube relieve us of our boredom ( Bitumen 33). The speaker of Bitumen argues that
these mediations pacify rather than invigorate, and replace what should be fear and action with awe

Critical Reflection In Nursing
When reflecting on the past few weeks of clinical experience, there is known to be many events in
which I can critically reflect upon in order to improve my clinical practice. During my second week of
clinical, I had been assigned with a tough patient. My patient was in his late 50 s, was a chronic
alcoholic and was an avid smoker. He has a medical history of COPD, hypertension, and liver
cirrhosis resulting from his alcoholic background. However, he had been recently diagnosed with a
right sided stroke. He was homeless as he lived in the motel in town, and had no family or friends to
lean on for support. In particular to my personal critical reflection, my patient had signed a DNR with
limited interventions. According to his wishes, he requested not to receive any artificial nutrition by
tube and refused antibiotics. As a nursing student, wishing to help people recover, this was a specific
component in which I could not wrap my head around. During the morning of report from the night
nurses, I had been surprised to hear that my patient had been unresponsive and had not been
responsive to stimuli. Prior to this, I was unaware that my patient had been in such horrible shape. I
did research the previous day and there was no significant evidence within the chart that indicated my
patient had been in this vegetative state. Upon entering my patients room, I was lost at what to do in
order to assess my patient, as he could not respond to me in any way, shape or form. I

Development Challenges Of The Vietnam War
Development Challenges
Vietnam is one of the fastest developing countires in the world, however it still faces many
development challenges.
The Vietnam War that began in 1955, is the main factor to why Vietnam is a developing country. The
war lasted almost 20 years and took over 2 million lives, 3 million were wounded and too many
children were left as orphans.
From 1960 1975 (during the war) life expectancy was very low. The average age varied between 59.07
61.54 years. Now they average to around 75.61 years.
Having low levels of litracy and education can delay the economic development of a country.
Vietnams literacy rate is, 15 24 years are able to read.
The infant mortality rate per 1000 live births is 18 (last recorded in 2012).

Lessons Learned In Non-Camp Counseling
Over the summer I spent the entire month of July as a leader in training at a Girl Guide camp. I
learned many essential skills for being an effective camp counselor, but not all of those skills were
applicable in non camp life. Yet there was one lesson I learned that has stuck with me; and I try to
keep it in mind everyday. Everyday at camp we did a variety of sessions where we would do an
activity that would teach us a lesson about leadership in an enjoyable and engaging way. The activity I
remember the most is an activity we did on one of the very first days. We had been told to wear
running shoes that morning, and after breakfast we trekked through the forest and arrived in a clearing
with many different low ropes courses. All of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, self care was still incorporated into my day to day life. That started to change bit by bit as I
started to get back into the swing of things. I started spending time with my friends I hadn t spoken to
in weeks, I started a job far away from home and soon after I started school. Once my life started to
get busy, I started to get too busy for self care. I forgot about my egg like I had forgotten about it on
the ropes course. I would stay an hour or two late at work if they needed help even if that meant I
wasn t going to be getting home until very late at night; even though I was scheduled for the day shift
again the next day. I started to take my friends personal issues to heart and did my best to try and fix
everything for them. As a result of this I was tired, stressed, anxious and generally just in a despondent
state of mind, even though I put forth the appearance that everything was amazing. I was putting
everyone else s desires above my

Canada Economy Vs Mixed Economy Analysis
An economy is the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services; the way an
economy is organized is called an economic system. There are three types of economic systems:
planned, market, and mixed. A planned economy is an economic system where the government
decides what should be produced, how much it should cost, and how much people should be paid. A
market economy is a type of economic system where there is competition and prices are set by supply
and demand. There is little government involvement. A mixed economic system is a mix of these two.
Canada is more of a planned economic system, leaning towards mixed, and the United States of
America (USA) is a market/mixed economic system. Many people believe that the economies of the
two countries should stay separate, but Canada and the USA would greatly benefit by banding
together and forming a market economy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The partnership between them would be stronger as well. Trade and other relations between the
countries would be reinforced, and there would be more trust. Having a common economic system
would help make things simpler. There would be less confusion about how the two countries are
operated. Since both countries depend on each other already, this would make it easier for all
agreements between them. A market system would work well for a common system between Canada
and the USA because it encourages employees to work harder so they can be a contributing member of
society. A market economy has competition, and that is part of why it succeeds. In a planned economy,
people can easily cheat the system by working the bare minimum and still getting paid, whereas in a
market economy the competition drives workers to do their best. The competition allows people to
thrive and move up the system, which is just what the two countries

It was a cool Sunday afternoon at Candlestick Park. The San Francisco 49ers faced 3rd down and 3
yards to go on the Cowboys 6 yard line. The play was called Red Right Tight Sprint Right Option .
Rookie quarterback Joe Montana was under center ready to start the play with 56 seconds left in the
game. The pass was intended for Fred Solomon but was fully covered by the Cowboy s defense. Being
chased by legendary linemen, Montana back pedaled toward the sideline, and it was almost certain
that he would either go out of bounds or he would get sacked. By a miracle, Montana pump faked and
threw the ball to the back of the end zone; where Clark was reaching at full extension to make the

Because of an injury Walsh was working with an inexperienced player he, installed a new offensive
system... a philosophy emphasizing quick reads, intricate crossing patterns, precision timing, and
much more (Bill Walsh). Walsh used philosophies that he learned from his college career plus some
NFL experience to learn something new. This unique offense would later help him land better
opportunities in his career. After Cincinnati Walsh would go on to become the head coach of Stanford,
where he achieves a 13 3 season and gets the attention of Eddie DeBartolo and the 49ers. With the San
Francisco 49ers, Walsh made a major impact to the players, coaches, and organization. From 1976 to
1978 the 49ers were in the worst possible situation any professional team can face in sports. They
were considered the worst team in sports, not just football. Bill Walsh knew something needed to be
done in order to not only keep his job but also save a whole franchise. In his autobiography, Walsh
would write and exhaust his idea that his prime directive was the full and total implementation
throughout the organization of the actions and attitudes of the standards of performance (The Score
Takes Care of Itself). Walsh wanted full and total control of the whole organization. No other head
coach had done this; no other person, except the owner, has full control of the organization. It was

The Closed-Open Continuum
Writing is a skill that is learned, taught and most importantly dreaded by most students. This includes
students of all ages but however if you have trouble with writing or coming up with a thesis statement
you can always use the closed open continuum. The closed open continuum is a structure
demonstrating different levels of determining how to propose your thesis and structure your writing.
The closed side of the continuum is top down thesis based prose, this means that you introduce your
thesis at the beginning of the introduction. Top down thesis based consists of your typical five
paragraph essay. This also means that you will be introducing your thesis in the introduction
paragraph. On the other side of the continuum is theme based narrative

Catch 22 Themes
In Joseph Heller s satirical novel Catch 22, Yossorian, an American bombardier soldier in World War
II, is stationed on an island off the coast of Italy with his fellow comrades. Everyone there is frustrated
and upset as most of them have completed the amount of missions that are needed to be sent back
home, but catch 22 is a law that is interpreted different ways throughout the book that ultimately is
there to keep soldiers from going on leave. The war gradually takes a severe toll on Yossorian,
especially when his friend Nately is killed in combat. After this, Yossorian refuses to fly anymore
missions and gets caught in Rome illegally. With this, the officers over Yossorian give him two
choices: be court martialed or receive an honorable discharge by voicing his approval of raising the
amount of missions to eighty before a soldier can be sent home. Yossorian, however, had other plans
as he decides to get away from the catch 22 once and for all by escaping to neutral country of Sweden
to take control of his life once again. There are many different elements that Joseph Heller utilizes to
portray the horrors of war such as the characterization of Yossorian, the characterization of Milo
Minderbinder, and the theme of the absurdity of war presented throughout the novel. Unlike many
other characters in the book, Yossorian is characterized as a realist who sees all the horrors of the war
when many others cannot. This is portrayed in a conversation between Clevinger and

Schindler s List Comparison
The feature film Schindler s List was the movie adaptation of the novel, Schindler s Ark by Thomas
Keneally. It was said that the story was told to the author by the Pfefferberg family, survivors and
members of Schindler s Jews. This black and white docudrama was a fictional film that has a high
degree of factuality. Steven Spieldberg s purpose of creating the movie in this fashion was to
document the atrocities of the Holocaust of World War II, while giving the film a connection to the
audience. THESIS Oskar Schindler was the hero of the tale, but he didn t start out that way. He was a
businessman that looked for the easiest way to make a buck. He enlisted many others in his failed
schemes along the way until he found a sure fire way to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These moments defined him as a businessman. They truly didn t touch him. His moment came during
the cleansing of the ghetto. He was atop the hill looking down on all that lay beneath. The gun shots,
the shouts and cries echoed for all to hear. And out of the darkness he saw a young girl in a red coat.
This was the only color in the entire film. It was his pivotal moment. That young girl represented the
innocence and the humanity that the Jewish people had been denied. The realization had dawned on
Schindler as the full weight of the reality hit him. From that moment on during the film, Schindler was
a changed man. His efforts to secure his people went from a purely economic standpoint, to a more
altruistic motive. Schindler created the list in the film, although through the research of many it has
been found that the full story isn t as cut and dried. The original list was created by Raimund Tisch,
parts were edited, lost and recreated with substitutions. The quote by Itzak Stern The list is an absolute
good. The list is life. All around its cramped margins lies the gulf, was the reality of this list. No
matter the true creation origins, the list saved over a thousand

African Americans and the Civil War
December 15th 2013 AP US History Unit 7 Essay African Americans and the Civil War Slavery
affected many of the political reasons that contributed to causing the Civil War in 1961. Most in the
Northern states including President Lincoln were more concerned with preserving the Union rather
than fighting for the freedom of all. On the other hand the South fought to preserve what they believed
to be absolute state rights. However the overall goals of the war were altered significantly by the
willingness of African Americans during war. This also later contributed to the new culture and
politics that followed. There was always a constant controversy with the issue of fugitive slaves
throughout the time of the Civil War. Major Butler ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the beginning, the concern of popular sovereignty in new territories and the reformation of the
United States was a very important issue; however, now the government was faced with different
issues involving the South. It was said by the Republican Party that the thirteenth amendment was
expected and essential but if the African Americans had not been so persistent, this would not have
been the case. Also the addition of the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments further more angered the
Southern people (Doc H). This resulted in the majority of Johnson s presidency to be focused on
Reconstruction. Black s participation and involvement in the constitutional conventions showed their
endless support to the Reconstruction (Doc J). Even though grandfather clauses and poll taxes would
soon cut the blacks off from their involvement, they were able to gain full citizenship and suffrage.
These particular triumphs would have been impossible if they had not altered the outcome of the war.
Not only were African Americans majorly involved in political issues, but they were also very major
contributors to social changes in the years that followed the Civil War as well. Many blacks
disregarded Southern discouragement and many joined colored regiments or found jobs of their own
(Doc F). It was alarming to most Southerners, but after the war African Americans started attending
school and the once

Comment: I read this book and finished it in 3 weeks, short and fast for someone like me who doesn t
like to read. But I found this book very interesting; I usually read mystery books with crimes and
investigation because I like searching into the unknown. I found this book very interesting because it
was a crime and investigation novel, not only that. It opened up more Chinese knowledge for me. I
learnt a bit more about Chinese traditions and their beliefs and through this book I could say that it
was funny and suspending at the same time. I loved the plot as well; especially the part where in the
end we find out that the survivor who got shot in the chest was actually the whole mastermind behind
the crime was not foreseeable. It came totally out of the blue for me, it wasn t one of those read the
beginning of the book and then you could guess the rest of the story type, it kept me guessing the
whole way through the story. So I really enjoyed this book. But the worst part about it was the ending,
where the United States government allowed this to happen secretly in its waters so that it could have
a better relationship with China is just absurd, they need a better

Comparing Afterlife With Archie
Afterlife with Archie was one of my favorite pieces we viewed throughout the semester. It was
separated from the other works before it because it used visual horror within a book. Many of the
works in the internet horror module are visual but different because they are short films. The Black
Hole was one of the works we viewed that showed a different kind of horror than any of the other
pieces we viewed. The works have similarities, but very different stories. Both works are similar in the
fact that they use a visual media to convey the story. The types of media are different, Afterlife with
Archie is a book and the visual media being utilized is comic drawings. The Black Hole is a short film
and uses video. Although the media sources are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The other works had no visual aid and the pages were restricted to words on every page. Afterlife with
Archie had dialogue to aid in the book, but was unique from the first page. The book used different
shades of red and blue that helped in setting the mood. The first page of the book is blacked out with
red paint splattered on it like blood, the words This is how the end of the world begins... (Aguirre
Sacasa 1.) sets the mood for the book and gives the idea that this will be an intense journey through
the pages. The Black Hole is a short film and uses video and sound as the only means of
communication to the audience. There is no dialogue since the man in the film is the only person in
the office. This film relied heavily on using video to convey the message flickering lights and dark
shadows add a scary feeling in the film. All the other works we viewed had dialogue, since this film
did not it stood out among the others. Visualizing the horror lets the audience see exactly what the
author and artist envisioned. It allows the viewer to see the raw image the artist wanted us to see. In
other works, monsters and places are described to the viewer and the viewer can make visual images,
but that varies among every individual. Visual aid deletes the variation among viewers and captures
the horror the way it was

Dear Ms. Sharpe:
RE: PORTFOLIO ANALYSIS ON VANGUARD, REYNOLDS AND HASBRO
Investment decision is an intricate process that requires careful analysis of individual investment
options available for continued profitability. Different financial analyses provide different
perspectives. While ratio analysis of an individual company offers the financial health of that
company, its comparison with other key investment opportunities may be limited when comparing
across different industries. This analysis seeks to utilize a number of statistical and financial results
emerging from the analysis of 5 years of data. The results will be analyzed and discussed per
individual subheading used in the analysis to provide a broader picture.
The mean of Vanguard is 0.57433 as compared to RJR and Hasbro whose means are significantly high
at 1.87483333 and 1.18383. However, the standard deviations of the three variables indicate that
Vanguard has the lowest standard deviation at 3.60171 as compared to 9.36645828 and 8.11583 for
RJR and Hasbro respectively. The lowest standard deviation as in the case of Vanguard indicates that
the data is more reliable and provides a more realistic data set than the other data sets. Thus, Vanguard
provides the best investment opportunity. The median of the data may not provide a very accurate
description of the variables although Vanguard s

George Lakoff s Anna Nicole On The Brain
In George Lakoff s book The Political Mind , in an excerpt entitled as Anna Nicole on the Brain , he
talks about our mind is our brain. Values, thoughts and principles come from within. They come
exactly deep inside our brains and form there. Our life shapes us by the narratives that we live in.
These narratives are the different parts of our lives that people defined us. And these parts are
structured in what we call frames . Every frame of our life has a role. For example, Lakoff says, when
Anna Nicole Smith died, she is seen with different narratives such as Rags to Riches narrative,
American Redemption narrative, and Troubled Life narrative and the list goes on; each narrative
conveys how people see and judge her through her ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
shows. Audiences become more aware of continuing story lines, erratic character development and
never ending problems. Here, complex narratives of characters are formed in front of the audience so
they would crave for some more story telling. Lakoff s complex narrative can be seen in the show for
example, 24 . First, it is about an anti terrorism organization narrative which surely a must view for
the people s consciousness about a huge problem today. Second, the character development of the
protagonist using combinations of narratives is used so that it would greatly impact the audience
through the protagonist s actions. Lastly, the writers use cliffhanger narratives for each episode to
build more momentum, which is needed to create a marathon series. Television shows are only one of
the many uses of complex narratives. Complex narratives can be used from entertainment to politics to
our personal lives and several others. Narratives can be used to see through the lens of a person s life.
Narratives let us judge how to view a person based on his or her life story. People s views change
depending on what narrative either with a positive or negative motif we see a person fits in, especially
when people see themselves living in that person s narrative. Through neural bindings, the blending of
simple narratives create complexity, it is where it produces emotional experiences that mend people s

How Does Saving Affect The Economy
CHAPTER 1
AN INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
1.1 Statement of the Research Problem
Consumption and saving play an important role in the world economy and what determines
consumption and saving is income. As Keynes pointed out, When individuals are saving their money,
they are actually hurting the economy because saving reduces aggregate demand and thus reduces
company revenue . From this study, it is seen that one s expenditure becomes another s income. On the
other hand, saving is also important because of future consumption which has to be maintained for
meeting any kind of emergency or to be able to face any level of risks and uncertainties. For this very
reason precautionary saving has become very essential for migrants since migrants face higher risks
and uncertainties than the local people who do not have to worry so much about their future.
In today s scenario, the study shows that with increase in migration, there is an increase in the total
spending within the economy which leads to an increase in the supply of labour and increase in
demand. Therefore, an increase in spending within the economy brings about an increase in the GDP.
Generally individuals or households look at the prices of the products and the quality before making a
purchase because price of commodities determines their consumption behaviour. How much they save
depends on how much they earn and how much they consume. Consumption and saving behaviour
differ from place to place. A person

Why People From Europe And Asia Have Developed Faster...
Prologue: Yali s Question
In this chapter, Diamond discussed why people from Europe and Asia have developed faster than
people from the Americas, Australia, and Africa. He asserts that it is not because of any genetic
superiority that the current unequal distribution of wealth and power exists. Diamond was inspired to
write this book because of a question posed to him by a Papua New Guinean named Yali. Yali inquired
as to whom white people have more cargo (material possessions) than Papua New Guineans. Many in
Papua New Guinea are still hunter gatherers while Europeans, North Americans, and the East Asians
have industrial societies with high levels of wealth, power, and technology. In Papua New Guinea,
survival is more of an intelligence ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Chapter 1: Up To The Starting Line
This chapter starts off by explaining the evolution of the first human ancestors, which originated
around seven million years ago. Historians and scientists were able to conclude that the closest living
relatives of humans are the gorilla, bonobo, and the chimpanzee. All humans from the start originated
and evolved in Africa. Of the many evolutionary stages of humans, Homo erectus was the first to
migrate outward into other areas. Neanderthals have constantly been portrayed as unintelligent,
desolate, and inconsiderate creatures, from past and present points of perspective, but evidence from
archeological digs show they essentially cared for their sick and buried their dead. The Great Leap
Forward is what Jared Diamond calls the earliest signs or evidence of uniform tools, bone tools,
jewelry, and much more. This great leap was estimated to be around 50,000 years ago. Around the
same period, hominids began to spread to New Guinea and Australia. As hominids adapted to their
new surroundings, large animal species were wiped out because they weren t evolved to defend
themselves against hominids and other predators. The extinction of many large animal species in
Eurasia occurred shortly after

Flash Of Genius Relates To Intellectual Property
The movie Flash of Genius relates to Intellectual Property in that the intermittent windshield wipers
were Robert Kearns own intellectual property. The movie has strong ties to patent laws of the United
States as well as the 1941 Supreme Court case of Cuno Engineering v. Automatic Devices Corp which
requires that a new device must reveal the flash of creative genius, not merely the skill of the calling
(JUSTIA).The movie relates to this because Ford infringed on Kearns patent (that was still under

blink like a human eye?). Because of this flash of genius, he came up with the idea for the intermittent
wiper and it was not merely created as

Advantages Of Direct Democracy
Direct Democracy There is a lot of controversy over which government is the best, and honestly I don
t think there really is a best form of government but I believe there that some are better than others.
Direct Democracy definitely has its flaws, it is the best option open to us at this time. It gives the
people the power to get what they want. America is already a form of Democracy, it s a Representative
Democracy. So direct Democracy is not too far fetched.
Direct democracy, also known as pure democracy, is where the people vote to on or form consensus
on policy initiatives directly. The word democracy literally means rule by the people . The United
States today is a representative democracy. Which is a democracy in which the people ... Show more

From 1995 to 2005 swiss citizens voted over 30 different times, while the french citizens only voted
twice. In direct democracies the citizens have most of the power.
We want rights, freedom, and equality. But we also need some sort of structure. As people we need a
say in how we live our lives but we cannot just do as we please. We can t have the government gaining
too much power but we need to still be controlled. Harmony in all aspects is what we are sought after,
we want and need a balance. Direct democracy is a way to get citizens involved and united. It helps
keep the government transparent, you cannot make promises to the people and then not keep them
because you run the risk of the people removing you from power. It holds everyone accountable, the
officials to do what they promised and to fix the problems within society and the people to keep their
government going in the right direction. The individual is foolish, the species is wise. (Burke).
Together we are better. There are also some pros to having a direct democracy, when the people want
to see change, they appeal and they vote. Which would truly be a government for the people, by the
people , protecting our interests. There is a checks and balances system that makes sure the power gets
distributed. Democracy also promotes equality, allows for change, doesn t put too much power in the

Essay about The Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club
Almost 150 years ago, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., expressed the following sage but sad observation
in his book The Professor at the Breakfast Table : Society is always trying in some way or other to
grind us down to a single flat surface. Unfortunately, this is still true today. Last week I saw the movie
The Breakfast Club written and directed by John Hughes which expressed a similar theme.

How To A Failure In College
Experiencing a Failure Once when I experienced failure I was a junior in high school and I made the

One of my biggest goals as a kid was to make the varsity team and play and it was an amazing feeling
knowing that I did make the team, however, I didn t play. I ve always wanted to be on that varsity
court, so knowing that I didn t start motivated me to do better next year. So for the past year I ve been
working extra hard in and outside of practices just to make the extra effort to make sure I will get to
play my final year of high school. It affected me because I ve always wanted to play and I started all

Loud Music from Night Clubs and Hearing Damage Essay
Amplified music from night clubs can lead to hearing damage
Shifts in hearing thresholds can result in excessive exposure to any kind of sound. It not matters
whether the sound is pleasant or not nor the music genre, the degree of noise induced hearing loss
(NIHL) depends on the intensity and frequency characteristics of the noise, along with its duration and
the intermittency of the exposure. Individual genetic and environmental factors also play important
part(Bovo, Ciorba, Martini, 2007).
Hetu and Fortin (1995) studied the characteristics of highly amplified music in discotheques from
psychoacoustic and phenomenological points of view. They found that the amplified music is
characterized by strong pulsations (≈ 2 Hz), a narrow dynamic ... Show more content on

Recreational noise exposure (nightclubs and music players) is unlikely to cause the above direct
damage. Rather than direct mechanical injury, the process is a combination of metabolic and
mechanical changes. The music is more damaging when it is impulsive (energy is highly concentrated
in the time domain) and contains spectral energy peaks (over stimulation of local specific frequency
region of the cochlea), the stereocilla of the hair cells are the most vulnerable organ(Dobrucki et al.,
2013).
Several mechanisms have been proposed for TTS. This includes increased shearing force of the hair
cells, synaptic fatigue, metabolic exhaustion of the outer hair cells (OHCs) and inner hair cells (IHCs)
due to overload, and changes in blood supply to the cochlea(Yamasoba, Pourbakht, Sakamoto, Suzuki,
2005). The internal amplification system of the cochlea is thus impaired as shown in LePage and
Murray (1997) s research by studying otoacoustic emissions. Yamasoba et al. (2005) suggested that
constant overstimulation of the metabolic process could result in production of by products like
reactive oxygen species and free oxygen radicals, which triggers cell necrosis or apoptosis. They also
found pathological changes of the hair cells along with TTS, such as hair cells disorganisation and
fusion, floppy stereocilia, collapsing of the pillar bodies and swelling of the afferent nerve endings.
For IHCs, in addition to

The Ecological Catastrophe Of The Dust Bowl
Between the 1930s and 1940s, the southwestern Great Plains region of America suffered a severe
environmental disaster known as the Dust Bowl, that resulted from the combination of a huge water
shortage and harsh farming techniques. The drought stricken plains experienced relentless dust storms
that swept through Texas to Nebraska, killing crops, livestock and people. The Dust Bowl further
intensified the devastating economical impacts of the Great Depression and drove hundreds of
families to migrate in search of work and better living conditions all the while capturing the nation s
artists, musicians, and writers.
This ecological catastrophe was caused by both agricultural and federal factors. These factors would

Equilibrium Constant Lab Report
Introduction The purpose of this lab was to find an equilibrium constant. The equilibrium constant was
for a reaction between propan 1 ol and ethanoic, or acetic, acid that formed water and the ester,
propylethanoate. A titration reaction was used to be able to calculate the concentrations of each
solution at equilibrium, and ultimately the equilibrium constant.1 In a titration, a solution with a
known concentration is added to a solution of an unknown concentration that contains an indicator. In
this experiment, phenolphthalein is used which is colorless in acidic solutions and red in basic
solutions. At its equivalence point, it is pink. In an experiment, this point marks when the
concentrations of hydronium and hydroxide are equal, so the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This was done by subtracting the acid correction value from the final acid concentration:
[ethanoic acid] = [H+ total] [H+ correction]
[ethanoic acid] = 6.90 M 0.64 M
[ethanoic acid] = 6.26 M
Next, it is known that at equilibrium, the concentrations of ethanoic acid and propan 1 ol are equal.
Because of this, it was known that the concentration of propan 1 ol was also 6.26 M.
From the overall reaction, it was also known that as the reaction progressed, ethanoic acid was
converted into propylethanoate. Because of this, the concentration of propylethanoate at equilibrium
could be calculated:
[propylethanoate] = [initial ethanoic acid] [equilibrium ethanoic acid]
[propylethanoate] = 10.71 M 6.26 M
[propylethanoate] = 4.45 M
Also from the formula, it was seen that the concentrations of water and propylethanoate would be
equal. Because of this, the concentration of water was also 4.45 M at equilibrium.
Finally, to calculate the equilibrium constant, all of these values were plugged into the equilibrium
constant expression:
Keq = [propylethanoate][water] / [ethanoic

Fast cars, taking drugs, listening to loud music, and going to parties were many activities that
teenagers from the 1980 s did to enjoy their youth and have a fun filled night. Less Than Zero contains
many of these activities and more in a fast paced, fictional autobiography about the life of a wealthy,
college boy during his winter break. This novel shows how life is like growing up as a wealthy

Summary Of Lynch Law In All Its Phases By Ida B. Wells
2. One of the texts most focused on educating readers about race and the challenges it presents to
American culture is Ida B. Wells Lynch Law in All its Phases. As discussed in previous reading
responses, Wells speech is made up primarily of evidence due to the limitations placed on women of
colors speech but even more so due to her deep seated conviction that the country at large does not
know the extent to which lynch law prevails in parts of the Republic (189). In this way, Wells
endeavours to educate the US both about lynching and about the repercussions of allowing lynch law
to prevail. That is, Wells forces audiences to acknowledge the fact that lynching, and thus white
supremacy and racism, actively threaten the moral pillars that the United States is built on. ... Show

Here, Wells recounts the way that racism seizes the American dream, seizes any conception of a
meritocracy, and instead punishes any African American regardless of their success. Furthermore,
Wells extends this threat on the American dream to a threat on the constitution (specifically the 14th
amendment), stating, It should be already established as a fact . . . that every human being must have a
fair trial for his life and liberty (202). Again, Wells demonstrates the way that lynch law and racism
supersedes the supreme law of the United States, thus threatening the very foundation of American life

Three Technological Changes To Photography In The Last 200...
________________________________________________________________
What have been three technological changes to photography in the last 200 years?
1. Color Photography, known as the first durable color photograph taken by Thomas Sutton, but James
Clerk Maxwell did the real work. James Clerk Maxwell was a mathematical physicist, he worked out
everything to take this photograph of The Tartan Ribbon, Thomas simply pressed the shutter button.
2. The Polaroid, the first real camera ever made, (meaning you didn t need a long exposure time, as
well as didn t have to develop the photo in a dark room.) The first Polaroid was the model 95 Land
Camera, made in 1948, by Edwin Land.

How can the changes in technology inspire your practice of photography?
Before photography was very hard to create; now we can easily take a picture with the click of a

computer.

How do you use technology to improve your art, such as photographs

us make our photographs better, we can crop, brighten, auto fix, add filters and so many other things.
You can focus, and blur. Things you might not consider while taking the photograph.

Rowe Rational Justification Analysis
The notion of rational justification needs to be clarified in order to understand the theism atheism
debate and the categories of friendly and unfriendly theist, atheist and agnostic. For something to be
rationally justified, as in a belief, simply means, according to Rowe, to have good reasons supporting
the belief , and that it is possible to rationally justify a belief that is false. Based on this theory, even
though a theist and atheist have opposite beliefs, they can agree upon the possibility of the false belief
to be justified. In our text, we are presented with six (6) definitions, namely a friendly and unfriendly
theist, atheist and agnostic. The friendly versions of these categories define those who can rationally

I feel there are many occasions where labeling is inappropriate, such as in the case of race, description
of body type, cognitive abilities and with those that have disabilities. An exception to this would be for
recording of the census or needing to report on the demographics of a particular area of the country.
As I mentioned above, for the sake of proposing a theory, these religious labels of friendly or
unfriendly theist, atheist, or agnostic would be acceptable. But we have to be very careful in general
terms. The dangers of labeling are significant, as labels put limitations on individuals by restricting
their behaviors in a certain way by not enabling that person to experience personality changes

When I was young, I was naive, and also pretty arrogant, as was everyone I presume. But, on the other
hand, I also had two sides to define me: the first was this quiet, curious, and almost peculiar being

selfless child who cared about others well being more than his own. For as long as I can remember, I
ve always been this way. Good or bad, that s me. Unlike most children my age, instead of playing
outside with friends in the neighborhood, I d be inside or alone in solitude with my thoughts. I ve

Loyalty, By George Orwell
Loyalty Questioned, and Humanity Revealed Loyalty is a bond a mutual trust, the most personal and
sacred bond in human history. You must have loyalty before you can have friendship, or love. Loyalty
means someone can count on you, someone can trust you to be there when in need. Loyalty is a major
theme of George Orwell s novel 1984. In a totalitarian world where loyalty, love, and any other
personal feelings are outlawed by the vicious Party, some are still trying to find the strength to rebel.
Winston, a silent rebel of the party, lives in constant fear of being captured and tortured for his
suppressed protest. He yearns to live, to feel, and to make love. After he meets a beautiful girl named
Julia, who shares his disdain for the Party, he knows she is the key to his dreams. The love story
between these two revolves around loyalty and rebellion. This novel focuses on the importance of
loyalty, and why it must be suppressed if a totalitarian society is to be achieved. It also focuses on how
even the strongest of loyalties can be broken under extreme stress. No loyalty is safe when torture, and
constant torment are forced on an individual. This is a heartbreaking and depressing novel that sheds
some harsh reality on loyalty and betrayal. The importance of loyalty, and the breaking point of trust
are both major themes of the novel 1984. Loyalty is incredibly important to any kind of relationship,
and it is of particular importance to Winston and Julia in 1984. The love

Youth Reflection Paper
Even in 2017 social injustice is very real. Many before have taken measures against this issue, but it s
still there. Over the past couple of week s, I ve taken notice to the events that have been going on in
the world. While keeping the question how can I change that in mind. It occurred to me that many of
the oppressors committing social injustices were victims themselves. They were not properly educated
when they were younger. Growing up thinking something is right your whole life is hard to change.
So, I knew that s where I would start. The youth is the future and should be an improvement from the
previous generation. I ve been fortunate enough to experience different cultures, and people my whole
life. From going to Laotian New Year, to participating in Muslim community programs, etc. the list

union is, an organized association of workers formed to protect and further their rights and interests.

Reflective Commentary On Alison Bechdel s Fun Home
Creative Response Reflective Commentary
I reworked Daniel Defoe s Roxana in the graphic novel style of Alison Bechdel s Fun Home. Initially,
the reason I chose the two novels was to see how well the oldest text on the course could be adapted
into the newest. Interestingly the texts proved to be quite similar in narrative; both are versions of
autobiography (although one fictional and one true), both feature a retrospective first person, self
conscious narrator (Booth 155), and both centre around a female protagonist deviating from societal
norms of the time. Fittingly enough Roxana also mentions her father in the beginning, although she
leaves him dead quite quickly. Adapting a novel into a graphic novel is a drastic stylistic change, and
my biggest concern was to keep my adaption steadily tied with the two texts, whilst trying not to get
too carried away in the creative process.
I based my process of making the comic on an interview with Alison Bechdel, where she explains how
she planned the text in Adobe Illustrator, sketched and inked by hand, and finally rendered the panels
digitally ( Alison Bechdel ). Like Bechdel, I relied extensively on Google images for various details of

The italicised words and German capitalization gets lost in the all caps form of the graphic novel, yet
something lingers in terms of autonomy of the author. It has a disregard of normal stylistic
considerations affected not only by Defoe as a writer but also a progress towards a more factual prose
in the late seventeenth century (Watt 105). Nowadays, the fixed structure of grammar allows for little
waywardness in format, apart from in the graphic novel. Like Defoe, the individual artist has a certain
freedom of choice, affected only by general conventions, of where to place the text and how to guide
the reader it is an interesting case of a rare anarchic individuality in

Established on April 4, 1975 to develop and sell BASIC interpreters for the Altair 8800, Microsoft

A black African young man Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a photographer and his white girlfriend Rose

In the beginning of the scene where deer get hits from the car, the camera literally focuses on Chris
shoes as he walks closer to the deer to find out if the deer is dead or not. Chris is wearing a blue
shoelaces. There is a long history behind what colored shoelaces do you wear and each color has a
specific meaning. For instance, red color shoe laces are used by neo nazi skinheads symbolize that
they had killed someone. But, by researching on blue shoelaces I found out that it is used to symbolize
the opposite that wearing blue shoelace makes someone thinks you are opposing racism(Citation). In
fact, Chris ends up killing Jeremy(Caleb Landry Jones). These red and blue color shoe laces can be
viewed differently throughout the film. What I saw from the film that all the white people are wearing

  • 2. Burtynky s Irony In Relation To The Sublime A resolution to this problem, and a further refinement of Burtynsky s relation to the sublime, appears in Timothy Morton s discussion of irony. Morton writes that, Irony involves distancing and displacement, a moving from place to place, or even from homey place into lonely space (Morton 98). This description of irony provides useful tools for understanding how Burtysnky s photographs in OIL function in relation to the sublime. Though these descriptors typify many of Burtysnky s photographs, examining his aerial photographs of the Alberta Oil Sands, such as Alberta Oil Sands #10 Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada, 2007 (Fig. 3) will be most productive. These photographs are devoid of humanity yet replete with their residuum tailings ponds. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Returning to Benjamin, he writes that, Even the most perfect reproduction of a work of art is lacking in one element: its presence in time and space (Benjamin II) which corroborates the speaker of the poem s stance that, Meaning takes place in time (Solie 38). Although Benjamin s thoughts focus more on the ubiquity and lack of authenticity that occurs with mass image production and reproduction, Bitumen shares some of these concerns, tracing the development of modern proliferation of images from the first imagining techniques of Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, to the photochrome postcards (32) of late 19th century, up to video sharing websites. The speaker of Bitumen looks to construct a timeline of image mediation alongside the aestheticization of catastrophe. Even calamitous weather events, which Bitumen ties to the unseasonable (34) weather that results from global warming, becomes a sublime, photogenic spectacle with the ubiquity and quotidian character of modern image and film: tornados on YouTube relieve us of our boredom ( Bitumen 33). The speaker of Bitumen argues that these mediations pacify rather than invigorate, and replace what should be fear and action with awe and ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Critical Reflection In Nursing When reflecting on the past few weeks of clinical experience, there is known to be many events in which I can critically reflect upon in order to improve my clinical practice. During my second week of clinical, I had been assigned with a tough patient. My patient was in his late 50 s, was a chronic alcoholic and was an avid smoker. He has a medical history of COPD, hypertension, and liver cirrhosis resulting from his alcoholic background. However, he had been recently diagnosed with a right sided stroke. He was homeless as he lived in the motel in town, and had no family or friends to lean on for support. In particular to my personal critical reflection, my patient had signed a DNR with limited interventions. According to his wishes, he requested not to receive any artificial nutrition by tube and refused antibiotics. As a nursing student, wishing to help people recover, this was a specific component in which I could not wrap my head around. During the morning of report from the night nurses, I had been surprised to hear that my patient had been unresponsive and had not been responsive to stimuli. Prior to this, I was unaware that my patient had been in such horrible shape. I did research the previous day and there was no significant evidence within the chart that indicated my patient had been in this vegetative state. Upon entering my patients room, I was lost at what to do in order to assess my patient, as he could not respond to me in any way, shape or form. I ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Lessons Learned In Non-Camp Counseling Over the summer I spent the entire month of July as a leader in training at a Girl Guide camp. I learned many essential skills for being an effective camp counselor, but not all of those skills were applicable in non camp life. Yet there was one lesson I learned that has stuck with me; and I try to keep it in mind everyday. Everyday at camp we did a variety of sessions where we would do an activity that would teach us a lesson about leadership in an enjoyable and engaging way. The activity I remember the most is an activity we did on one of the very first days. We had been told to wear running shoes that morning, and after breakfast we trekked through the forest and arrived in a clearing with many different low ropes courses. All of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, self care was still incorporated into my day to day life. That started to change bit by bit as I started to get back into the swing of things. I started spending time with my friends I hadn t spoken to in weeks, I started a job far away from home and soon after I started school. Once my life started to get busy, I started to get too busy for self care. I forgot about my egg like I had forgotten about it on the ropes course. I would stay an hour or two late at work if they needed help even if that meant I wasn t going to be getting home until very late at night; even though I was scheduled for the day shift again the next day. I started to take my friends personal issues to heart and did my best to try and fix everything for them. As a result of this I was tired, stressed, anxious and generally just in a despondent state of mind, even though I put forth the appearance that everything was amazing. I was putting everyone else s desires above my ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Canada Economy Vs Mixed Economy Analysis An economy is the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services; the way an economy is organized is called an economic system. There are three types of economic systems: planned, market, and mixed. A planned economy is an economic system where the government decides what should be produced, how much it should cost, and how much people should be paid. A market economy is a type of economic system where there is competition and prices are set by supply and demand. There is little government involvement. A mixed economic system is a mix of these two. Canada is more of a planned economic system, leaning towards mixed, and the United States of America (USA) is a market/mixed economic system. Many people believe that the economies of the two countries should stay separate, but Canada and the USA would greatly benefit by banding together and forming a market economy. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The partnership between them would be stronger as well. Trade and other relations between the countries would be reinforced, and there would be more trust. Having a common economic system would help make things simpler. There would be less confusion about how the two countries are operated. Since both countries depend on each other already, this would make it easier for all agreements between them. A market system would work well for a common system between Canada and the USA because it encourages employees to work harder so they can be a contributing member of society. A market economy has competition, and that is part of why it succeeds. The San Francisco 49ers faced 3rd down and 3 yards to go on the Cowboys 6 yard line. The play was called Red Right Tight Sprint Right Option . Rookie quarterback Joe Montana was under center ready to start the play with 56 seconds left in the game. The pass was intended for Fred Solomon but was fully covered by the Cowboy s defense. Being chased by legendary linemen, Montana back pedaled toward the sideline, and it was almost certain that he would either go out of bounds or he would get sacked. Catch 22 Themes In Joseph Heller s satirical novel Catch 22, Yossorian, an American bombardier soldier in World War II, is stationed on an island off the coast of Italy with his fellow comrades. Everyone there is frustrated and upset as most of them have completed the amount of missions that are needed to be sent back home, but catch 22 is a law that is interpreted different ways throughout the book that ultimately is there to keep soldiers from going on leave. The war gradually takes a severe toll on Yossorian, especially when his friend Nately is killed in combat. After this, Yossorian refuses to fly anymore missions and gets caught in Rome illegally. With this, the officers over Yossorian give him two choices: be court martialed or receive an honorable discharge by voicing his approval of raising the amount of missions to eighty before a soldier can be sent home. Yossorian, however, had other plans as he decides to get away from the catch 22 once and for all by escaping to neutral country of Sweden to take control of his life once again. There are many different elements that Joseph Heller utilizes to portray the horrors of war such as the characterization of Yossorian, the characterization of Milo Minderbinder, and the theme of the absurdity of war presented throughout the novel. Unlike many other characters in the book, Yossorian is characterized as a realist who sees all the horrors of the war when many others cannot. Most in the Northern states including President Lincoln were more concerned with preserving the Union rather than fighting for the freedom of all. On the other hand the South fought to preserve what they believed to be absolute state rights. Also the addition of the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments further more angered the Southern people (Doc H). This resulted in the majority of Johnson s presidency to be focused on Reconstruction. Black s participation and involvement in the constitutional conventions showed their endless support to the Reconstruction (Doc J). Values, thoughts and principles come from within. They come exactly deep inside our brains and form there. Our life shapes us by the narratives that we live in. These narratives are the different parts of our lives that people defined us. And these parts are structured in what we call frames . Every frame of our life has a role. First, it is about an anti terrorism organization narrative which surely a must view for the people s consciousness about a huge problem today. Second, the character development of the protagonist using combinations of narratives is used so that it would greatly impact the audience through the protagonist s actions. • 17. How Does Saving Affect The Economy CHAPTER 1 AN INTRODUCTION TO RESEARCH METHODOLOGY 1.1 Statement of the Research Problem Consumption and saving play an important role in the world economy and what determines consumption and saving is income. As Keynes pointed out, When individuals are saving their money, they are actually hurting the economy because saving reduces aggregate demand and thus reduces company revenue . From this study, it is seen that one s expenditure becomes another s income. On the other hand, saving is also important because of future consumption which has to be maintained for meeting any kind of emergency or to be able to face any level of risks and uncertainties. For this very reason precautionary saving has become very essential for migrants since migrants face higher risks and uncertainties than the local people who do not have to worry so much about their future. In today s scenario, the study shows that with increase in migration, there is an increase in the total spending within the economy which leads to an increase in the supply of labour and increase in demand. Therefore, an increase in spending within the economy brings about an increase in the GDP. Generally individuals or households look at the prices of the products and the quality before making a purchase because price of commodities determines their consumption behaviour. How much they save depends on how much they earn and how much they consume. Consumption and saving behaviour differ from place to place. A person ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It not matters whether the sound is pleasant or not nor the music genre, the degree of noise induced hearing loss (NIHL) depends on the intensity and frequency characteristics of the noise, along with its duration and the intermittency of the exposure. Individual genetic and environmental factors also play important part(Bovo, Ciorba, Martini, 2007). Recreational noise exposure (nightclubs and music players) is unlikely to cause the above direct damage. Rather than direct mechanical injury, the process is a combination of metabolic and mechanical changes. The music is more damaging when it is impulsive (energy is highly concentrated in the time domain) and contains spectral energy peaks (over stimulation of local specific frequency region of the cochlea), the stereocilla of the hair cells are the most vulnerable organ(Dobrucki et al., 2013). Several mechanisms have been proposed for TTS. This includes increased shearing force of the hair cells, synaptic fatigue, metabolic exhaustion of the outer hair cells (OHCs) and inner hair cells (IHCs) due to overload, and changes in blood supply to the cochlea(Yamasoba, Pourbakht, Sakamoto, Suzuki, 2005). The internal amplification system of the cochlea is thus impaired as shown in LePage and Murray (1997) s research by studying otoacoustic emissions. Yamasoba et al. The equilibrium constant was for a reaction between propan 1 ol and ethanoic, or acetic, acid that formed water and the ester, propylethanoate. A titration reaction was used to be able to calculate the concentrations of each solution at equilibrium, and ultimately the equilibrium constant.1 In a titration, a solution with a known concentration is added to a solution of an unknown concentration that contains an indicator. This was done by subtracting the acid correction value from the final acid concentration: [ethanoic acid] = [H+ total] [H+ correction] [ethanoic acid] = 6.90 M 0.64 M [ethanoic acid] = 6.26 M Next, it is known that at equilibrium, the concentrations of ethanoic acid and propan 1 ol are equal. Because of this, it was known that the concentration of propan 1 ol was also 6.26 M. From the overall reaction, it was also known that as the reaction progressed, ethanoic acid was converted into propylethanoate. Because of this, the concentration of propylethanoate at equilibrium could be calculated: [propylethanoate] = [initial ethanoic acid] [equilibrium ethanoic acid] [propylethanoate] = 10.71 M 6.26 M [propylethanoate] = 4.45 M Also from the formula, it was seen that the concentrations of water and propylethanoate would be equal. Because of this, the concentration of water was also 4.45 M at equilibrium. Here, Wells recounts the way that racism seizes the American dream, seizes any conception of a meritocracy, and instead punishes any African American regardless of their success. Furthermore, Wells extends this threat on the American dream to a threat on the constitution (specifically the 14th amendment), stating, It should be already established as a fact . . . that every human being must have a fair trial for his life and liberty (202). Again, Wells demonstrates the way that lynch law and racism supersedes the supreme law of the United States, thus threatening the very foundation of American life and ... • 30. Rowe Rational Justification Analysis The notion of rational justification needs to be clarified in order to understand the theism atheism debate and the categories of friendly and unfriendly theist, atheist and agnostic. For something to be rationally justified, as in a belief, simply means, according to Rowe, to have good reasons supporting the belief , and that it is possible to rationally justify a belief that is false. Based on this theory, even though a theist and atheist have opposite beliefs, they can agree upon the possibility of the false belief to be justified. In our text, we are presented with six (6) definitions, namely a friendly and unfriendly theist, atheist and agnostic. The friendly versions of these categories define those who can rationally justify ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I feel there are many occasions where labeling is inappropriate, such as in the case of race, description of body type, cognitive abilities and with those that have disabilities. An exception to this would be for recording of the census or needing to report on the demographics of a particular area of the country. As I mentioned above, for the sake of proposing a theory, these religious labels of friendly or unfriendly theist, atheist, or agnostic would be acceptable. But we have to be very careful in general terms. The dangers of labeling are significant, as labels put limitations on individuals by restricting their behaviors in a certain way by not enabling that person to experience personality changes different from that of their current ... • 31. Personal Narrative-Defining Me When I was young, I was naive, and also pretty arrogant, as was everyone I presume. But, on the other hand, I also had two sides to define me: the first was this quiet, curious, and almost peculiar being who was engaged and would absorb everything (quite literally too.) The other being this reckless, yet selfless child who cared about others well being more than his own. For as long as I can remember, I ve always been this way. Good or bad, that s me. Unlike most children my age, instead of playing outside with friends in the neighborhood, I d be inside or alone in solitude with my thoughts. It was perplexing; before that night of endless learning, I had been so numb, arrogant, and naive. When I arose the next morning, I had a completely different mindset than before. I had wanted to know more about space, the stars, formation of planets and our galaxy; our very universe. I wanted to get to the bottom of it and solve all of the mysteries I had burrowed within. I have never been interested in the stereotypical ideas of a career; I didn t want to be a soccer player, nor did I want to become a firefighter, what I wanted was to become a scientist in hopes of studying space more. Not knowing what that career was called until a few years ago, I had continued on with my life, only talking about that topic in detail with my older brother. • 33. Loyalty, By George Orwell Loyalty Questioned, and Humanity Revealed Loyalty is a bond a mutual trust, the most personal and sacred bond in human history. You must have loyalty before you can have friendship, or love. Loyalty means someone can count on you, someone can trust you to be there when in need. Loyalty is a major theme of George Orwell s novel 1984. In a totalitarian world where loyalty, love, and any other personal feelings are outlawed by the vicious Party, some are still trying to find the strength to rebel. Winston, a silent rebel of the party, lives in constant fear of being captured and tortured for his suppressed protest. He yearns to live, to feel, and to make love. After he meets a beautiful girl named Julia, who shares his disdain for the Party, he knows she is the key to his dreams. The love story between these two revolves around loyalty and rebellion. This novel focuses on the importance of loyalty, and why it must be suppressed if a totalitarian society is to be achieved. It also focuses on how even the strongest of loyalties can be broken under extreme stress. No loyalty is safe when torture, and constant torment are forced on an individual. This is a heartbreaking and depressing novel that sheds some harsh reality on loyalty and betrayal. The importance of loyalty, and the breaking point of trust are both major themes of the novel 1984. Loyalty is incredibly important to any kind of relationship, and it is of particular importance to Winston and Julia in 1984. The love ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 34. Youth Reflection Paper Even in 2017 social injustice is very real. Many before have taken measures against this issue, but it s still there. Over the past couple of week s, I ve taken notice to the events that have been going on in the world. While keeping the question how can I change that in mind. It occurred to me that many of the oppressors committing social injustices were victims themselves. They were not properly educated when they were younger. Growing up thinking something is right your whole life is hard to change. So, I knew that s where I would start. The youth is the future and should be an improvement from the previous generation. I ve been fortunate enough to experience different cultures, and people my whole life. From going to Laotian New Year, to participating in Muslim community programs, etc. the list goes on. Also, I have Black, White, Indian, and; Asian, Arabic, Hispanic, and Native American friends. Who I learn from every day. So, how do I give others the education and lessons that I ve been taught? While I was doing my government homework about labor unions it hit me! The definition of a union is, an organized association of workers formed to protect and further their rights and interests. What better way to promote social injustice then to have an organization of likeminded, diverse individuals. Directed at the youth of the world, this organization would be comprised of teens. Through my various connections I would gather a group of individuals from all different walks ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Reflective Commentary On Alison Bechdel s Fun Home Creative Response Reflective Commentary I reworked Daniel Defoe s Roxana in the graphic novel style of Alison Bechdel s Fun Home. Initially, the reason I chose the two novels was to see how well the oldest text on the course could be adapted into the newest. Interestingly the texts proved to be quite similar in narrative; both are versions of autobiography (although one fictional and one true), both feature a retrospective first person, self conscious narrator (Booth 155), and both centre around a female protagonist deviating from societal norms of the time. Fittingly enough Roxana also mentions her father in the beginning, although she leaves him dead quite quickly. Adapting a novel into a graphic novel is a drastic stylistic change, and my biggest concern was to keep my adaption steadily tied with the two texts, whilst trying not to get too carried away in the creative process. I based my process of making the comic on an interview with Alison Bechdel, where she explains how she planned the text in Adobe Illustrator, sketched and inked by hand, and finally rendered the panels digitally ( Alison Bechdel ). Like Bechdel, I relied extensively on Google images for various details of 17th ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The italicised words and German capitalization gets lost in the all caps form of the graphic novel, yet something lingers in terms of autonomy of the author. It has a disregard of normal stylistic considerations affected not only by Defoe as a writer but also a progress towards a more factual prose in the late seventeenth century (Watt 105). Nowadays, the fixed structure of grammar allows for little waywardness in format, apart from in the graphic novel. Like Defoe, the individual artist has a certain freedom of choice, affected only by general conventions, of where to place the text and how to guide the reader it is an interesting case of a rare anarchic individuality in ... Over the summer, my family and I went to North Carolina to celebrate my grand parent s 50th anniversary and my cousins were driving up from Florida to meet us at the beach house. I asked, Ben be quiet Okay I could finally try to sleep but couldn t find a comfortable spot to sleep. When I turned to the left, the seat belt was in my face and when I turned right, I would fall into the middle of the seats. When we finally reached the hotel, we unloaded and when out to dinner at a Texas Steak House that was right across the street from the hotel that we were staying at. When we got back to the hotel, I looked for my bed and it looked like I was sleeping on the pull out couch but that was fine with me. When I woke up, I felt like I slept better on that pull out couch then in my bed at home. I got dressed in clothes that I could wear i n the car for a long time and went down to the main floor of the hotel to eat breakfast with my grandparents. A black African young man Chris (Daniel Kaluuya), a photographer and his white girlfriend Rose (Allison Williams) went to visit her parents house. Chris is worried on the fact that her parents doesn t know that Chris is black because her parents are liberal racist. Chris finds out that her family has a black servant who seems like they are forced to do the work or being controlled by their parents. In the beginning of the scene where deer get hits from the car, the camera literally focuses on Chris shoes as he walks closer to the deer to find out if the deer is dead or not. Chris is wearing a blue shoelaces. There is a long history behind what colored shoelaces do you wear and each color has a specific meaning. For instance, red color shoe laces are used by neo nazi skinheads symbolize that they had killed someone. But, by researching on blue shoelaces I found out that it is used to symbolize the opposite that wearing blue shoelace makes someone thinks you are opposing racism(Citation). In fact, Chris ends up killing Jeremy(Caleb Landry Jones). These red and blue color shoe laces can be viewed differently throughout the film.
