This document compares different types of motors used for ceiling fan applications, including single phase induction motors, universal motors, and brushless DC (BLDC) motors. It finds that BLDC motors provide benefits over traditional induction motors used in ceiling fans, including higher efficiency, better speed regulation, and ability to achieve higher energy efficiency ratings. A MATLAB model of a BLDC motor-driven ceiling fan is presented and analyzed, showing performance advantages in starting torque, speed control, and airflow compared to single phase induction motors commonly used in ceiling fans. While BLDC motors have a higher cost, the document concludes they can provide better performance and increased energy efficiency compared to traditional ceiling fan motors.
