9. COMMUNICATIVE
STYLES
It refers to the individual’s preferred style of
communicating which he thinks is effective with
others. We all have different preferences for both
communicating with others and interpreting
communications from others.
We have five communicative styles! These are: frozen,
formal, consultative, casual, and intimate.
10. FROZEN STYLE
It is also known as fixed speech and it does not
require any feedback from the audience.
It uses the complex grammatical sentence
structure (complex sentence meaning adding one
or more dependent clauses to the independent
clause using conjunctions)

THESE SITUATIONS
Any formal ceremonies, national
pledges, school creeds, national
anthem, and Miranda rights.

You have the right to remain
silent. Anything you say can and
will be used against you in a
court of law. You have a right to

13. FORMAL STYLE
The speaker is expected to use formal words
and expressions. It delivers in complete
sentences with specific word usage.
It shares information that follows professional rules,
standards, and processes. The speaker is also
prohibited to use slang terminologies.
14. FORMAL STYLE
It is mostly seen in writing other than
speaking.
Formal style disallows the use of ellipsis (omissions),
contractions, and qualifying modal adverbials
(probably, possibly, evidently, surely, certainly, and
subjectively, ends in -ly).

Business meetings, speeches, school
lessons, job interviews, school
application interviews, and research
papers.

17. CONSULTATIVE
STYLE
It is also known as the unplanned speech and
is considered the most practical among other
styles. It uses listener participation and
feedback.
There are two defining features of this style:
• The speaker supplies background information.
• The listener participates continuously.
18. OFTEN USED IN
THESE SITUATIONS
Semi-formal communication, group
discussion, business meetings, trade,
asking someone who is more
knowledgeable than you about certain
matters such as Doctors, Lawyers,
Pharmacists, and Teachers.
19. Pharmacist: Good morning. How can I
help you?
Example:
Customer: Good morning, I have this
prescription.
Pharmacist: Let me see. Okay, I think
we have it. Let me get that for you!
Customer: Thank you, and can you tell
me how I should use it?
Pharmacist: Certainly! You need to take these pills once
a day before you go to sleep. It's important that you
finish all the packages, if you forget to take it at night,
you need to take two in the morning.
20. CASUAL STYLE
It is also known as the informal style. It is used
in conversations between friends and people
who have something to share and have
shared background information.
It allows the use of ellipsis, slang, and
unconventional (unusual) English words. There is
free and easy participation of both the speaker and
listener.
21. OFTEN USED IN
THESE SITUATIONS
Phone calls, everyday conversation with
classmates or friends, chat, and text
messages.
22. Mingyu: Hey dude! Wassup?
Example:
Hoshi: Hey man! I’m gonna
play some video game. U up for
it?
Mingyu: Yah sure. BRB! Gotta
buy some snacks first.
Hoshi: Hurry up! The game is
about to start in a minute.
24. INTIMATE
STYLE
It is used in conversations between people
who are very close and have known each other
quite well because they have the maximum
shared background information
It uses personal language codes, nonverbal
communication such as gestures, facial expressions,
and eye contact. That means even short utterances,
can also be a form of communication.
25. OFTEN USED IN
THESE SITUATIONS
Couple talking about their relationship
goals, family sharing things about each
other, best friends sharing secrets, special
moments, and so on.
26. Mother: Dear, You are currently
reasonable for marriage. So we feel that
you need to get married.
Example:
Daughter: Mom, however, I need to finish
my graduation and afterward should
work.
Mother: But you have arrived at the
period of marriage.
Daughter: Mom I need to seek after my
goal and afterward I can wed.
Mother: You can wed and afterward
continue ahead with your studies.
