Welcome to the English 9Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Communicative
Styles!
This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both
from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping
the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming
their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling.
This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help
learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their
needs and circumstances.
In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the body of

What I Need to Know
This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help you
master the communicative styles in various situations. The scope of this
module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The
language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons
are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in
which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are
now using.
This module is all about communicative styles for various situations. After
going through this module, you are expected to:
1. Identify different communicative styles in various situations.
2. Determine how communication styles help in effective
communication.
3. Employ/use the appropriate communicative styles in various
conversations.
4. Create a comic skit for each communicative styles.
5. Classify statements based on their communicative style.
6. Write scenes and apply communicative styles for the actors’ lines.

Lesson
1 Communicative Styles
Every day in our lives, we talk with different people. But do you know
how to communicate with them properly? As we go on with this module, we
will understand what type of communicative style we should use for various
situations. With this understanding, it will help us become an effective
speaker.
What’s In
To achieve our goal in becoming an effective speaker, the first thing you
need to understand is what communication is. In this activity, you will gain
the knowledge that will aid you throughout this module. Good luck and have
fun answering the activity!
ACTIVITY NUMBER 1: CARICATURE ANALYSIS
A. Look closely at the photo below. List down your observations on your
notebook.

B. Answer the following questions to understand the image above.
1. What can you see in the image?
2. What do you think they are doing?
3. What about the bubbles that come out from their mouths? What do
they symbolize?
4. Do you think having a “good communication skill” is important?

Keep in your mind that communication is the act of transferring
information from one place, person or group to another.
Every communication involves (at least) one sender, a message and a
recipient. This may sound simple, but communication is actually a very
complex subject.
The transmission of the message from sender to recipient can be
affected by a huge range of things. These include our emotions, the cultural
situation, the medium used to communicate, and even our location. The
complexity is why good communication skills are considered so desirable by
people around the world.

Also, in life, one of the must-learn skills is to have a good
communication skill. It will aid us in all aspects of life whether it is in school,
work, community, and even our personal life. It will help you in exchanging
ideas as well as understanding them. And as we communicate with different
people, it requires a level of understanding to whom you are talking to, what
is their background, status and position. Communicative styles will play a
vital role in making each communication more meaningful. Hence, making
you an effective speaker.

ACTIVITY NUMBER 2: TALK TO ME
Now that we have understood what communication is and how important
it is to have good communication skill, we will test how you will communicate
depending on the various situations you are in. After doing this activity, it is
expected that you will understand how various situations affect the way you
communicate with the person or the people around you.
Instructions:
Below are different images of the scenarios we encounter in our lives.
Beside each picture, you will notice the certain scenarios and a series of
underlines. Now, what I want you to do is to think of what you will say to this
person depending on the present situation you are both in. The first item will
serve as an example to guide you how to do this activity.
1stScenario: Your mother asked you to buy some
vinegar and soy sauce to the Sari-Sari Store.
You: Good morning, Aling Nena! Do you have any
vinegar and soy sauce?
Aling Nena: Yes, I do have. How many would you like?
You: One pouch each for vinegar and soy sauce.
Aling Nena: Here are your vinegar and soy sauce
pouches.
You: How much does it cost?
Aling Nena: That would be P30.00.
You: Thank you Aling Nena! Here is my payment. Good
bye!

What is It
We are halfway there! Good job for coming this far. Now that you have
recognized that it requires different communicative styles depending on whom
you are talking to and the situation you are both in, it is best to understand
fully what are the different communicative styles and its definitions. As you go
along with this section, you are expected to grasp the concepts of each
communicative style.
Communicative Styles Defined
Communicative Style refers to the individual’s preferred style of
communicating he thinks that is effective with others. Individuals have
various preferences for both communicating with others and interpreting the
communications from others.
These are the five communicative styles: Frozen, Formal, Consultative,
Casual, and Intimate.
Frozen style is also known as the fixed speech. It uses the complex
grammatical sentence structure and vocabulary that are only known by
experts in field. The use of language is fixed and does not require any feedback
from audience.
This type is often used in
respectful situations or formal
ceremonies such as weddings,
funerals, national pledges, school
creeds, national anthem, and
Miranda rights.

FROZEN STYLE

Below is an example of marriage vows for the catholic wedding rights.
In this communicative style, the speaker is expected to use formal
words and expressions. It delivers in complete sentences with specific word
usage. Also, elaboration of complex sentences and noun phrases are evident
with strong coherence, well-structured and logically sequenced.
Formal Style disallows the use of ellipsis (omissions), contractions, and
qualifying modal adverbials such as probably, possibly, evidently, surely,
certainly, and subjectively marks. It intends to share information that
conforms to professional rules, standards, and process. Also, the speaker is
prohibited to use slang terminologies.
This style is usually used

FORMAL STYLE
Groom:"I, ___, take you, ___, to be my wife. I promise to be true to you in good times
and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love and honor you all the days of my
life."
Bride: "I, ___, take you, ___, to be my husband. I promise to be true to you in good
times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love and honor you all the days of
my life."

Below is an example of a lifted part from a research paper. Since it is
a research paper, the language used is formal and it follows a logical order
in presentation.
Consultative style is also known as the unplanned speech. This is used
in semi-formal communication and is considered as the most operational
among the other styles.
This type of communicative style uses listener participation and
feedback. There are two defining features of this style – a.) Thespeaker
supplies background information, and b) the listener participates continuously.
This style is usually used in
group discussion, business meetings,
trade, and asking someone who is
more knowledgeable than you about
certain matters such as Doctors,
Lawyers, Pharmacists, and Teachers.

Below is an example conversation between a Doctor and her patient.
Notice how the doctor uses specific terms (jargons) to describe the patient’s

The purpose of the study is to investigate the correlation between

1. What is the reading performance level of grade 9 students in terms
of: accuracy, fluency, and automaticity?
2. What is the writing competence level of grade 9 students in terms of
vocabulary use, sentence structure, and grammatical structure?
3. Is there a significant relationship between reading performance level
and writing competence level of grade 9 students?
CONSULTATIVE STYLE

condition. Lung Carcinoma and premalignant are medical terms which meant
Lung Cancer and it’s precancerous. Furthermore, notice the active interaction
between the speaker and listener.
Casual style is also known as Informal Style. This communicative style
is used in conversations between friends and people who have something to
share and have shared background information. This type does not follow any
structure unlike Formal Style. There is free and easy participation of both
speaker and listener. It allows the use of ellipsis, slang, profanity and
unconventional English words.
This style is usually used in phone
calls, everyday conversation with
classmates or friends, chat, and text
messages.

Below is an example conversation of two friends. Observe how they used
casual words and phrases such as dude (a person), whassup? (What’s up),
and BRB (Be Right Back).
CASUAL STYLE
Doctor: How long have you been experiencing these symptoms?
Patient: It is hard to breathe for the past few days. I always gasped for
air.
Doctor: Let me check your X-RAY results. The result shows that you
have Lung Carcinoma and it is premalignant.
Patient: Is there something we can do about it, Doc?
Doctor: Yes! Since it is in premalignant state, we could try
Chemotherapy. Also, from now own, you should start minding
your lifestyle.

Other casual words and phrases include:
• “Slay!” (Own it)
• “Bae” (Lover)
• “nope” (No)
• “freaking out” (getting
scared)
• “puke” (throw up)
• “watchagonna do?”
(What are you going to do?)
• “Lemme go!” (Let me go!)
• “I’m doin’ it my way!” (doing)
This type of communicative style is used in conversations between people
who are very close and have known each other quite well because they have
the maximum of shared background information.
The intimate style uses personal language codes, nonverbal
communication such as gesture, facial expressions, and eye contact. That
means even short utterances, can also be a form of communication. Just like
casual style, there is a free and easy participation of both speaker and listener.
This style is usually used in couple
talking about their relationship goals,
family sharing things about each other,
and best friends sharing secrets, special
moments and so on.

Below is an example conversation between husband and wife. Notice
how they call each other with endearment. It is evident that they have a strong
connection between the two of them.
Andrew: Hey dude! Whassup?
Miguel: Hey man! I’m gonna play some video game. You up for it?
Andrew: Yah sure. BRB! Gotta buy some snacks first.
Miguel: Hurry up! The game is about to start in a minute.

Instructions: Below are statements used in different situations. Copy the
statements and write them in the appropriate column. The first one is done
for you.
STATEMENTS:
1. “I will send to your e-mail the Budget Proposal regarding this event, Mr.

2. “By the power vested in me, I shall now pronounce you husband and wife.”
3. “Will I experience any side effects while taking these pills, Doc?”

REEL WRITER
Imagine you are hired to become a writer for a famous movie company. You are
tasked by the Director to write a highlight scene for the upcoming movies he will
make. Remember that writers use effective communication skills in expressing
their emotions. Be sure it will reflect on your scenes.
Instructions: Using the learnings that we got from the previous activities, below
are movie titles that will give you a hint what it is all about. What you have to do
is to write the actors’ lines and use appropriate communicative styles needed for
each scene. Refer to the sample scene below.

To have a better grasp of understanding about the current lesson that

  • 4. 1 Introductory Message For the facilitator: Welcome to the English 9Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module on Communicative Styles! This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators both from public and private institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and economic constraints in schooling. This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and circumstances. The scope of this module permits it to be used in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course. But the order in which you read them can be changed to correspond with the textbook you are now using. This module is all about communicative styles for various situations. After going through this module, you are expected to: 1. Identify different communicative styles in various situations. 2. Determine how communication styles help in effective communication. 3. Employ/use the appropriate communicative styles in various conversations. 4.   • 11. 8 Lesson 1 Communicative Styles Every day in our lives, we talk with different people. But do you know how to communicate with them properly? As we go on with this module, we will understand what type of communicative style we should use for various situations. With this understanding, it will help us become an effective speaker. What’s In To achieve our goal in becoming an effective speaker, the first thing you need to understand is what communication is. In this activity, you will gain the knowledge that will aid you throughout this module. Good luck and have fun answering the activity! ACTIVITY NUMBER 1: CARICATURE ANALYSIS A. Look closely at the photo below. List down your observations on your notebook.

Keep in your mind that communication is the act of transferring information from one place, person or group to another. Every communication involves (at least) one sender, a message and a recipient. This may sound simple, but communication is actually a very complex subject. The transmission of the message from sender to recipient can be affected by a huge range of things. These include our emotions, the cultural situation, the medium used to communicate, and even our location. The complexity is why good communication skills are considered so desirable by people around the world.   • 13. 10 What’s New ACTIVITY NUMBER 2: TALK TO ME Now that we have understood what communication is and how important it is to have good communication skill, we will test how you will communicate depending on the various situations you are in. After doing this activity, it is expected that you will understand how various situations affect the way you communicate with the person or the people around you. Instructions: Below are different images of the scenarios we encounter in our lives. Beside each picture, you will notice the certain scenarios and a series of underlines. Now, what I want you to do is to think of what you will say to this person depending on the present situation you are both in. The first item will serve as an example to guide you how to do this activity. 1stScenario: Your mother asked you to buy some vinegar and soy sauce to the Sari-Sari Store. You: Good morning, Aling Nena! Do you have any vinegar and soy sauce? Aling Nena: Yes, I do have. How many would you like? You: One pouch each for vinegar and soy sauce. Aling Nena: Here are your vinegar and soy sauce pouches. You: How much does it cost? Aling Nena: That would be P30.00. You: Thank you Aling Nena! Here is my payment. Good bye! 2nd Scenario: You approached your English Teacher to ask on how to write your reflection paper. Now that you have recognized that it requires different communicative styles depending on whom you are talking to and the situation you are both in, it is best to understand fully what are the different communicative styles and its definitions. As you go along with this section, you are expected to grasp the concepts of each communicative style. Communicative Styles Defined Communicative Style refers to the individual’s preferred style of communicating he thinks that is effective with others. Individuals have various preferences for both communicating with others and interpreting the communications from others. These are the five communicative styles: Frozen, Formal, Consultative, Casual, and Intimate. Frozen style is also known as the fixed speech. It uses the complex grammatical sentence structure and vocabulary that are only known by experts in field. The use of language is fixed and does not require any feedback from audience. This type is often used in respectful situations or formal ceremonies such as weddings, funerals, national pledges, school creeds, national anthem, and Miranda rights. https://www.pexels.com/photo/wedding-1779414/ FROZEN STYLE
  • 17. 14 Below is an example of marriage vows for the catholic wedding rights. In this communicative style, the speaker is expected to use formal words and expressions. It delivers in complete sentences with specific word usage. Also, elaboration of complex sentences and noun phrases are evident with strong coherence, well-structured and logically sequenced. Formal Style disallows the use of ellipsis (omissions), contractions, and qualifying modal adverbials such as probably, possibly, evidently, surely, certainly, and subjectively marks. It intends to share information that conforms to professional rules, standards, and process. Also, the speaker is prohibited to use slang terminologies. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love and honor you all the days of my life." Bride: "I, ___, take you, ___, to be my husband. I promise to be true to you in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health. I will love and honor you all the days of my life."
  • 18. 15 Below is an example of a lifted part from a research paper. Since it is a research paper, the language used is formal and it follows a logical order in presentation. Consultative style is also known as the unplanned speech. This is used in semi-formal communication and is considered as the most operational among the other styles. This type of communicative style uses listener participation and feedback. There are two defining features of this style – a.) Thespeaker supplies background information, and b) the listener participates continuously. This style is usually used in group discussion, business meetings, trade, and asking someone who is more knowledgeable than you about certain matters such as Doctors, Lawyers, Pharmacists, and Teachers. https://pixabay.com/vectors/doctor-lady-examine-child-kid-37707/ Below is an example conversation between a Doctor and her patient. Notice how the doctor uses specific terms (jargons) to describe the patient’s Statement of the Problem The purpose of the study is to investigate the correlation between A and B. Specifically, it seeks to answer the following questions: 1. What is the reading performance level of grade 9 students in terms of: accuracy, fluency, and automaticity? 2. What is the writing competence level of grade 9 students in terms of vocabulary use, sentence structure, and grammatical structure? 3. Is there a significant relationship between reading performance level and writing competence level of grade 9 students? CONSULTATIVE STYLE
  • 19. 16 condition. Lung Carcinoma and premalignant are medical terms which meant Lung Cancer and it’s precancerous. Furthermore, notice the active interaction between the speaker and listener. Casual style is also known as Informal Style. This communicative style is used in conversations between friends and people who have something to share and have shared background information. This type does not follow any structure unlike Formal Style. There is free and easy participation of both speaker and listener. It allows the use of ellipsis, slang, profanity and unconventional English words. This style is usually used in phone calls, everyday conversation with classmates or friends, chat, and text messages. https://pixabay.com/photos/talk-telephone-communication-phone-845619/ Below is an example conversation of two friends. Observe how they used casual words and phrases such as dude (a person), whassup? (What’s up), and BRB (Be Right Back). CASUAL STYLE Doctor: How long have you been experiencing these symptoms? Patient: It is hard to breathe for the past few days. I always gasped for air. Doctor: Let me check your X-RAY results. The result shows that you have Lung Carcinoma and it is premalignant. Patient: Is there something we can do about it, Doc? Doctor: Yes! Since it is in premalignant state, we could try Chemotherapy. Also, from now own, you should start minding your lifestyle.
  • 20. 17 Other casual words and phrases include: • “Slay!” (Own it) • “Bae” (Lover) • “nope” (No) • “freaking out” (getting scared) • “puke” (throw up) • “watchagonna do?” (What are you going to do?) • “Lemme go!” (Let me go!) • “I’m doin’ it my way!” (doing) This type of communicative style is used in conversations between people who are very close and have known each other quite well because they have the maximum of shared background information. The intimate style uses personal language codes, nonverbal communication such as gesture, facial expressions, and eye contact. That means even short utterances, can also be a form of communication. Just like casual style, there is a free and easy participation of both speaker and listener. This style is usually used in couple talking about their relationship goals, family sharing things about each other, and best friends sharing secrets, special moments and so on. https://tinyurl.com/y93psy5p Below is an example conversation between husband and wife.   • 26. 24 REEL WRITER Imagine you are hired to become a writer for a famous movie company. You are tasked by the Director to write a highlight scene for the upcoming movies he will make. Remember that writers use effective communication skills in expressing their emotions. Be sure it will reflect on your scenes. Instructions: Using the learnings that we got from the previous activities, below are movie titles that will give you a hint what it is all about. What you have to do is to write the actors’ lines and use appropriate communicative styles needed for each scene. Refer to the sample scene below. Movie Titles: 1. “Lovers in Roxas Night Market” 2. “High School Life” 3. “The COVID-19 Frontliners’ Stories” 4. “The Wedding of the Century” 5. “Arman and His Adventure in Finding the Ultimate Job” Assessment Movie Title: “My Best friend’s Boyfriend” Jenny: Erickaaaaaaa! How could you do this to me! Ericka: It wasn’t my intention that he fell in love with me. I wish I could dictate his feelings. You are important to me because we’ve been best friends since we were just kids, but this man right here, he is the only man I ever loved. Jenny: You know how this makes me feel. But as your true friend, I also want you to be happy. And I guess he makes you happy. Does he? Ericka: Very much. I hope you could understand us. I don’t want to lose the both of you. Jenny: It hurts but I don’t want to see my only best friend suffer because of my selfishness. I can see that you are both in love with each other. Who am I to oppose? From now on, I will support the both of you. I cherish our friendship more than this silly feelings I have for him. I’m sorry for earlier Ericka. Ericka: I am really sorry too, Jenny. Thank you so much for choosing to forgive me. I love you best friend! (This scene portrays a casual conversation between best friends who manage to settle their misunderstanding and save their friendship.)
