- 3. Physical Barriers PhysicalBarriers in the workplace include: Closed office doors, barriers, screens, and separate areas for people of different status. Large working areas or working in one unit that is physically separate from others e.g. a team of colleagues who have a different job from another team. Research shows that one of the most important factors in building strong working teams is being closely allocated to others.
- 4. How to overcome Physical Barriers The easiest way to overcome a Physical Barrier is to get around it. Closed office doors; open them. Separate working locations; walk to the other one.
- 5. Cultural Barriers Whenwe join a group and wish to remain in it, sooner or later we need to adopt the behaviour patterns of the group. Communicating with people from different cultures can be challenging even if they speak the same language. Words or gestures used in your culture could have a different meaning to other cultures.
- 6. How to overcomeCultural Barriers Cultural barriers can be the hardest barriers to overcome. It is important to understand and respect the cultural background of people you may be communicating with. Don’t project your own background onto people.
- 7. Language Barriers Languagebarriers Indicate the difficulty when trying to communicate with someone who doesn’t share a common language. In separate areas of a business, some workers primary language may not be similar to that of other workers.
- 8. How to overcomeLanguage Barriers Gestures are a great way to communicate without the use of words. Many words can be picked up by people who speak different languages through the media. Try using common words, speaking slowly and using gestures to illustrate it if needed. The saying goes “One picture paints a thousand words”. If needs be, draw a picture to project your point.

Work better with people when you feel comfortable round them, as you are not afraid to ask for help, and feel more relaxed within the job.

People who are from a different culture will generally have a different up bringing, if not known some things which don’t effect you could insult the other. Thumbs up in some cultures means good, ok etc. In others it can be offensive.
- #7 Cultural barriers hardest to overcome as it houses many different factors: Belief, taste in music, popularity, race, clothing etc. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. Some people may disagree with your beliefs, prefer different music etc. So don’t project your background as if “right” to you, is right to others.
- #8 Many foreign workers over here do not always speak English. Mainly the jobs these people will fore take are ones which do not require too much communication with others, for e.g. cleaning jobs.
- #9 Most of us have had the problem of being abroad, and trying to order food, or ask for directions from a person who speaks little English, and we often submit to using techniques like so: Gestures: Hand movements, facial expressions are a good way to gesture a point to someone. (A lot of people do talk with their hands). American/English movies, may be shown in other countries who’s primary language is not English. Voice overs are not always used and sometimes subtitles are used instead. Words between the 2 languages can be linked and picked up. You may not always have a pen handy to do this, but pictures are a great way to communicate with someone who doesn’t share a common language.
