Pressure Ulcers Donna Long Grand Canyon University NRS 433V Introduction to Nursing Research
February 11, 2012 Shahin E. S. M., Dassen T., Halfens R. J. G. (2009). Incidence, prevention and
treatment of pressure ulcers in intensive care patients: A longitudinal study. International Journal of
Nursing Studies 46: 413 421 Introduction Pressure ulcers refer to damage that occurs to the skin of a
patient. Pressure, shear and friction are among the known causes (Shahin, Dassen Halfens, 2009).
Pressure ulcers mostly affect the lower part of the body, the elderly and patients with spinal injuries
(Shahin et al, 2009). They are expensive to treat, require long periods of time and numerous
treatments to heal. As a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A total of 224 patients were approached for the study but only 121 patients consented (Shahin et al,
2009). Some patients refused to participate in the study, while others agreed to participate but failed to
sign the consent form. All the patients admitted to the intensive care unit during the month of April to
October 2006 were eligible to participate in the study and a questionnaire was used as the tool to
collect data. The privacy of the patient was maintained at all times while the nurses collected the data.
Patients provided information of their own will. Patients were tested on admission and on discharge.
The researchers conducting the study held a high level of confidence in each of the hospitals involved.
The incomplete information was discarded and was not used in the analysis. Finally, the collected data
was analyzed using the Statistical Package of social Science (SPSS) to give the following data.
Results of study The number of patients who complied with the study was 121. 56.2% are males and
43.8% are female (Shahin et al, 2009). Out of the 121 patients, 23 were admitted in a coma. The
average length of stay for the 121 patients was one week. Sixteen patients were found to have pressure
ulcers on admission. The final results showed a decrease in the number of pressure ulcers. Six people
obtained pressure ulcers during their stay in the intensive

Truman s Mom Research Paper
It is, and always has been a parent s job to raise their child; to bring them up into the world as best
they can to become functioning members of society. Truman s mom, like my mom showed him the
way the world worked. Unlike my mom, Truman s lied to him throughout the process which gave him
a twisted idea of what the real world is.
When looking at the way Truman s mom impacted him throughout his life, most would see it as
negative. She fundamentally lied to him his entire life in order to cover up the truth. Our parents are
the main people in our lives who both introduce us to the world, and help us to understand how things
work in it. My mom has significantly shaped the way I view the world because from the beginning she
has tried to steer me right by telling me what she believes to be the truths of the world. We all trust our
parents to tell us what is right in the world. When Christof is explaining why Truman has never
questioned his surroundings he says, We accept the reality of the world with which we re presented. It
s as simple as that. Because this is a true statement, it becomes clear that Truman s mom was the main
person who made him become acclimated to this fake ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

nature, I know that it is God rather than a person. The person who tells me this and helps me to know
the truth is my mom. In the movie, Truman s mom lets him know what he believes to be the truth
about the world and who is in charge but lies about it. My mom is the one who started me on my path

The Master Of Suspense And Alfred Hitchcock
Brian De Palma, Sam Raimi, George A. Romero, Dario Argento, William Friedkin, David
Cronenberg, Quentin Tarantino, and Steven Spielberg all have two attributes in common; the tactful
use of suspense and Alfred Hitchcock. Each person in the list above has, at one point, named Alfred
Hitchcock as an influence for their works (IMDb). Hitchcock has been known as, the master of
suspense, throughout his career and it shows, not only in the movies that he directed personally, but in
the movies of the other directors and producers who aspire to compare to him. Hitchcock s auteur, or
reoccurring themes within movies that can be traced back to a director s life and personality to identify
parts of him within his own movies include themes such as: an icy blonde female character, personal
disabilities and phobias of the main (male) lead, the use of sound studios rather than a natural setting,
and a theme of mommy issues associated with the main character.
To further look into the auteur of Alfred Hitchcock we must focus on a couple of specific movies and
we must know a little bit more about Hitchcock s life. The movies, Vertigo and Rear Window are both
the works of Hitchcock, and can both be evaluated in order to find some reoccurring themes
associated with this master of suspense. Often, the first theme noticed about these movies is the dark
plot and, you guessed it, suspense. In Vertigo the movie begins with a literal cliffhanger, the main
character is left dangling off

Examples Of Colonialism In Don Delillo
In Surfacing, Margaret Atwood used the two kinds of theories such as, Colonialism and Post

Atwood wrote Surfacing at a time when the cultural differences between Quebec and the rest of
Canada were manifesting themselves in terms of rising Quebec nationalism. The 1960s saw the Quiet
Revolution in Quebec: a series of economic and educational reforms coupled with a secularization of
society. The Quiet Revolution afforded Quebec greater political and economic autonomy, giving
Quebec s French citizens a sense of nationalism and a desire to separate from Canada. Atwood marks

Tiny Smiling Daddy
In Tiny, Smiling Daddy, the main conflict is that Kitty becomes a lesbian at a young age and her father
doesn t approve of it. He shows his disapproval, by trying to compare the sullen, morbid Kitty of
sixteen with the slender, self possessed. He calls her names and makes her feel depressed about
herself.
The mother in the story plays the good parent that supports her daughter, but her husband does not. So
she is eventually leaving him because he puts her down as well. She tries to be the mediator between
her daughter and husband, but she can not change what he is thinking.
Kitty s essay causes Stew to confront her because he remembered when she was a happy little girl

The Ibo Culture
The Ibo culture was structured to where men were dominant power seekers, and the women were
feeble caretakers for the diligent men and young kin. I, for one, was a part of the Ibo society, but my
identity was stripped away from my soul the day I fled my home. A handful of years ago, I was just an
ordinary baby that had a father and a mother. My father was a middle class worker, and he was
decently respected by the people of his faction. All of the population known the parent figure as
Deuhwa, and he was popular for his snuff. The woman who brought me into this devastating world
ceased to live before I could reach the age of one. Her name was Yve, and Deuhwa maliciously played

Yve was rooted in my dark, unconscious thoughts from time to time, and it would seem to be eerie if I
spouted that she communicated with her son on several occasions. If I had these dizzy hallucinations
and spooky nightmares, I couldn t be the only mere being who embraced the abnormality of life. It
was impossible! How could these imbeciles carry on with their robotic routines so oblivious to the
corruption of their heartbeat. I have witnessed a plethora of events, but those didn t come to par with
this childhood tale that now new mothers would hush in the developing ears of the baby s womb.
Because I have little time left in my heart capsule, I will be elated to share the story to foreigners,
wanderers, and mercenaries. May the rest of time be passed through the fable of Dear Oh Nwoye.

Enframing
In this quote Heidegger is expressing what the essence of modern technology is. The essence of
modern of technology is Enframing. Enframing is way of revealing, it is an imposition in which
humans view the world as ready to use, standing reserve, and disposable. The reason why Enframing
is challenging is due to the notion that we view nature as a force that can not only be subdued, but be
used to for our benefit. Nature no longer just exists but rather can now be viewed as a potential power
source than can be harnessed, but stored for later use. This notion of standing reserve has only become
more prevalent with the rise of renewable energy, especially when one considers solar energy. The
main benefits of solar power is not only something than can be extracted for usage while the sun is
out, but the fact that it can be stored and exploited when the sun is not readily available. ... Show more

Heidegger initially states that technology has a instrumental and anthropological definition. The
instrumental definition asserts that technology is a means to an end, while the anthropological
definition states that technology is a human activity. Heidegger makes a move separating the correct
from the true. While they may both be correct definitions of technology, he claims that the
anthropological and instrumental definitions of technology are not its true definitions. Which leads us
to question what is the true definition of technology and is there a distinction between technology and

for no reason at all, he gets put on trial for his crimes in public. Meursault s murder trial shifts away
from the murder itself and goes to Meursault s personal life and beliefs. Meursault s lack of grief

Summary Of The New Science Of Mind By Kandel
The brain is a very complex organ that conducts several mental processes. Kandel s article The New
Science of Mind describes how scientist are now able to describe the way brain processes are linked to
mental disorders. I recall learning about the different functions of the parts of the brain in anatomy
class. The hypothalamus regulates important body s systems, the amygdala has to do with our
emotions, the hippocampus helps us remember things, and the prefrontal cortex which enables
personality expression and moderates social behavior, as Kandel portrays in his research. As a
psychology major I am interested in the way the brain plays a role in mental disorders. He states that a
dysfunction in brain processes is what causes mental illnesses.

In recent years, the legalization of Cannabis has become a popular issue and conversation topic in
canada. Other countries, such as the Netherlands and Canada s neighbour, the United States of
America have begun to legalize the use of Cannabis for medicinal and recreational purposes. As a
result, other nations across the globe, including Canada, are also looking towards the legalization of

beyond bodily consumption have been discovered, and may provide excellent alternatives to other

The Privatization Of Temporary Assistance For Needy...
Introduction The privatization of Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) services has
occurred in all except one of 50 states (McConnell, Burwick, Perez Johnson, Winston, 2003). There
are substantial differences as to the size and extent of services that are privatized. This paper will first,
analyze study provided by the Mathematica Policy Research, Inc. (MPR) to discuss the benefits and
conversely the problems of contracting out. Secondly, this paper will discuss important factors and
pitfalls towards contracting effectiveness. Finally, this paper will recommend contracting out while
recommending assurances for accountability. Background Over the past two decades, the contracting
out of welfare facilities has grown and extended into new services. In 1996, the Personal
Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) was enacted into federal law
(McConnell, Burwick, Perez Johnson, Winston, 2003). The PRWORA began the stimulus towards the
desire of having the privatization of welfare programs. The act transferred the attention of the welfare
system away from programs like cash assistance, and instead focused on programs where recipients
are situated with jobs (McConnell, Burwick, Perez Johnson, Winston, 2003). The program also began
transferring autonomy to states so they may design in state policies that follow TANF. States as well
as localities thus began altering the services offered as well as the organizations which would provide

Lawsuit for Wrongful Death, Negligence and Breach of Warranty

The plaintiff Michael Aloe, widower of Robin Aleo, brought a suit individually and on behalf of his
wife s estate in Massachusetts/ U.S. First Circuit, against SLB Toys, Amazon.com Inc., Toys R Us,
and Amazon.com Kids, Inc., after his wife dies from injuries sustained when an inflatable pool slide

A consumer should be able to assume that when they follow the instructions properly, a slide pool
should remain inflated when they use it, without causing any unreasonable danger or harm.
Secondly, Aloe can allege for negligence which lead to the wrongful death of his wife because Toys R
Us did not follow the required testing procedures for compliance with Federal Safety Standard. In
addition, Toys R Us are negligent for having only one employee in their safety assurance department
who received approximately 4,000 certificates of this kind per month.
Furthermore, Aloe could also make a strong argument by imposing strict liability in tort on Toys R Us
for personal injuries that result from selling a defective product with design defect that is unreasonably
dangerous to the consumer without proper testing and compliance with Federal safety standard for
such products. Aloe could also appeal for both compensatory and punitive damages for the loss which
could be economic (such as lost income, medical expense) or non economic (such as pain and
suffering and loss of consortium, meaning the loss of someone s active presence and enjoyment in
their life).
Discussion from plaintiff s side
Aloe could argue that the cause of death of his wife is due to the defective and unreasonably
dangerous product that Toys R Us knowingly sold in the market. The regulation

Crowd Control In Iraq
Additionally, journalists report tear gas related fatalities occurring from time to time. McCoy (2014)
wrote about pyrotechnics in a tear gas canister burning down a house in the United States with dozens
inside, 3 Palestinians in a protest getting killed as a result of concussions or direct inhalation, and 37
political prisoners in Egypt suffocating from the gas while trapped in a vehicle. Physicians for Human
Rights (2012) reported that in Bahrain, where the gas is used frequently to wound, harm, harass, and
intimidate protestors, an asthmatic died from lung failure after repeated exposure. The military or
police often deny that tear gas had any connection to the fatalities whenever they can. To admit the
opposite would inconvenience them with legislative restrictions on their favored method of crowd
control.
Is tear gas effective as a means of crowd control?

The indiscriminate nature of the weapon makes even the protestors who are peaceful feel antagonized

despite efforts by police to use minimal force, and the people of Kashmir responded by throwing rocks

paramilitaries numbered in the hundreds . The worsening reputation of the local police as a result of
their own methods also negatively affects their ability to actually control crowds in their

The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis
In The Great Divorce, C.S. Lewis provides an allegorical description of a dreamers journey from hell
to heaven. The Narrator of the book takes a journey on a bus from the grey town, hell, to just outside
of heaven. While he is making this trip from the grey town to heaven, he converses with some of his
fellow travelers. These travelers are all different, yet all have the mindset of not being able to leave the
darkness of the grey town and go to the joy that is heaven. Through his talent in story telling and
writing, C.S. Lewis provides many thoughts and questions to be discussed and pondered upon. He
leaves ideas open for interpretation through allegorical writing, providing room for the reader to be
brought into the story through thought. He gives the reader a thought of what Heaven and hell are like,
and how they relate to each other; along with images of how God works in the world and afterlife, and
what is waiting for us after we die through the images of the afterlife. The opening of the book brings
the reader into the story through the eyes of the narrator. It is as if the reader is the narrator and is
going through the grey town himself. We see the book and the images of heaven and hell by the way
that the narrator experiences and describes it. This is a great way to go about writing this story,
because it has a more intimate connection between the reader and the story. The narrator goes around
the grey town and into the bus talking to all the characters he sees.

The Influence of Patronage on Jackson Pollock Art History Scott Mathew Jan. 21st, 2018 Introduction
Jackson Pollock, a famous artist representing the summit era of abstractionism, witnessed that
America took place of Paris in art world. However, his artworks were utilized as an American political
weapon during the Cold War to justify the impression on Western polities. This essay focuses on the

liked them, but no one really considered them, let along buying them. Surprisingly, just in next year,
forty his paintings were purchased, of course, in very high prices, and fifty two were bought in the
year after that year. Therefore, some attribute this phenomena to the governmental propaganda. With
this, America not only attacked arts and polities in the USSR, but also gained the reputations in art
world that there would be the new art movement leading by the US. As a result, Pollock earned a lot
of money and prestige, and pressure too. For entire four years, Pollock had drip painted again and

sketching skills, he could not draw something else. The only thing he could do was drip paintings. He
had tried some new inventions, but, like paintings he draw before, no one was willing to spend any for
those. After the four year, he stopped painting and hated it. The aura shackled him to be a drip

Carnival Cruise Line Fire Essay
1. Summary Carnival Cruise Line is one of the best cruise brands, but one of its ship faced severe
voyage challenge due to the fire on its largest vessel splendor weigh 113,000 ton and 952 feet long.
On the early morning, November 8, 2010, thick smoke and smell was reported by the ship crews and
the guests, later on inspection, the smell was reported to come from the engine room, the most critical
part for any ship. The fire accompanied with electrical failure, and all other contingency arrangements
catastrophically failed, and that resulted in complete blackout in the ship. The probable cause of the
fire was ignition in the diesel generator, which spread. Usually the seizure of one engine does not
result in complete disability of ship propulsion; however, this incident resulted in overall failure of
propulsion and movement in the ship when the ship was 200 miles away from the coast of San Diego,
dead in the water. 2. critical issues and their implications When the incident of fire occurred,

Physics Of Boiling Point Elevation
Introduction
The experiments studied here were used to help shed light on the importance of molality.
Understanding how molality impacts colligative properties is important to understanding solutions.
Concepts like entropy can only be seen through experimentations, and visually seeing entropy on a
graph helps make the concept easier. The data collected from other groups and data found by this
group are all meant to help find correlations between molality and the colligative property of boiling
points. Studying boiling point elevation is a key concept that can only be truly understood through
hands on experimentation.
Materials
The materials used for the experiment include: hotplate, temperature probe, data collection interface,
ring stand, two utility clamps, paper towels, mass scale, cupcake paper, scoopula, graduated cylinder,
stirring rod, beaker, 2.415g of table salt (NaCl,) 7.46g of glucose (C6H12O6,) 400.00ml of distilled
water (H2O)
Procedure
The hot plate was set on the base of the ring stand with both utility clamps attached to the ring stand.
They were attached so that one was hanging over the hot plate, while the other clamp faced directly
away from the hot plate. After the initial setup was done, a graduated cylinder was used to measure
out 100.00ml of distilled water into a beaker. For the three non control tests, glucose and table salt
were added to the distilled water at this step. Before placing the beaker of solution onto the hotplate,

Pros And Cons Of The Kyoto Protocol
By 2008, more than 29 millions of carbon dioxide emissions had been produced to the earth and the
number keeps rising drastically each year. The irony is that this carbon dioxide itself is only one of the
all greenhouse gases that emit, affect our earth, and become a major environmental problem. This
problem that may lead us to the brink of destruction would probably become the reason on why there
is Kyoto Protocol from the very first time.
Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement that aims to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the
presence of greenhouse gases. Countries that ratify the Kyoto Protocol are assigned different
maximum carbon emission levels and can participate in carbon credit trading. Demanding more than
the assigned limit will result in a penalty for the violating country in the form of a lower emission
limit in the following period.
The Kyoto Protocol separates countries into two groups. Annex I includes developed countries while
the Non Annex I refers to developing countries. In this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Women s Role In Ww2
On December 7, 1941, Japanese planes attacked Pearl Harbor, killing thousands at the base and
prompting the United States to declare war against Japan. The United States joined the Allied Powers
in World War II and their presence helped to turn the tides against Germany and the Axis Powers.
Upwards of 16 million American men left their homes and joined the military to fight for their
country. To fill their places, women took on a multitude of new responsibilities in order to keep the
homefront stable and prosperous while the war waged abroad. Encouraged by the likes of Rosie the
Riveter , women took jobs in industries that were previously exclusive to men, including factories that
created weapons and aircrafts used by the military. As needs for soldiers abroad increased, product

Romantic Comedy Analysis
Romantic Comedies. We all know of at least one. Chances are we all have one that we could watch
over and over again. But, why? What makes romantic comedies so appealing? Why do so many
people like them? The Incredible Jessica James is a romantic comedy, that is also an adult s coming of
age movie, but not your typical one. A typical romcom plays love as an almost insignificantly light
hearted joke. While love is still joked about, it isn t quite as light hearted in The Incredible Jessica
James. When people think of a rom com we typically think of one like: Sleepless in Seattle, You ve
Got Mail, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, 10 Things I Hate About You, or Pretty in Pink. The
Incredible Jessica James doesn t match up to those movies in a couple of ways. The Incredible Jessica
James doesn t completely shy around the politics of today s society, it starts off light but gradually
becomes a little more serious, shows the struggles of dating when two people start out not completely
over their exes, and is even relatable to some people whose parents have had a rough divorced. Jessica
Jones was made to be relatable more than the idealistic romantic comedy where they always end up
together. Politics; it is everywhere so why shouldn t we expect it in our movies? Jessica James is
passionate about three things in this movie: her opinions (politics), theater, and honesty. Her political
views are showcased in one particular scene: her sister s baby shower. Her gift while thoughtful is

also important to keep in mind what a child is capable at a certain age.
It s very remarkable to not be a quitter. Having perseverance helps you to find success in things. But it

Even parents get very worried about their children not working hard or their kids quit more often. The
solution to this problem is assigning chores (5 Reasons Kids should do chores). Assigning chores help

Katharine Berry and Zora Neale Hurston are two outlandish storytelling authors. Although, the two
authors create myths, each women writes about completely different stories. Individually they write
about how something came to be using the creativity in their minds. Both through storytelling.
Though, they are in the same genre of writing, each has a distinct style which gives the readers, the
chance to open up their imagination, with all of it s creativity, cleverness and unlikeness. Katharine
Berry reports the characteristics to the reader with words in relation to the setting. She chooses words

In my frantic surge to escape from my nightmare, I grasped my lantern and tossed it across the

lantern when light failed to exist? My mother swept the pieces to the side of the household and sat by
my side As I glance upon her face filled with emotion, nothing but darkness watched down on me. It
was a silent reminder that I would never see her expression again; that I would never see her giggle at

Ballerina Persuasive Speech
Ballerinas Do Not Jump High Because They Are Light weighted, It Is Because They Know How to
Recently an advert for the TTC had triggered protest from plus sized people: all the beautiful
ballerinas doing elegant posts and jumps being slim and tall are featured in the We Move You advert,
promoting the superior beauty of slimness. Many people may think that only slim people can do the
ballet jumps, especially the classic one featured: the grand jeté, a split in the air. But in reality, it s not
the slimness in working, it s the physics. The word, grand jeté, meaning big throw in French, is used
to describe the move of the dancer throwing and hanging themselves in the air. In preparation of the
jump, the dancer would run for a few steps or do a smaller jump to get their body in motion
horizontally, and get their knees bent more to store energy that is used to push the whole body up, like
jumping with a spring on, and take off. When the dancer s legs are off the ground, the real challenge
starts. Any object off the ground, no matter how much it weighted, near the Earth surface is subjected
to the constant gravitational force, which pulls the object, including the ballerina s body, down to the
ground. So how does a ballerina stays in the air as if they were hanged mid air? The answer is in the
split. But first, we have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of Dalton Conley s You May Ask Yourself
Dalton Conley s book, You May Ask Yourself, defines sociological imagination as, The ability to
connect the most basic, intimate aspects of an individual s life to seemingly impersonal and remote
historical forces (Conley 2015, pg. A 11). Sociological Imagination is the idea of being able to step
outside of the box, and evaluate society from an alternative point of view. Symbolic Interactionism,
norms, socialization, and the idea of understanding yourself vs. understanding the social aspect of
society, are some of the key concepts mentioned throughout this paper, to help break apart what the
sociological imagination consists of. Society is changing a lot, and change can sometimes make it hard
to cope with the world around us. Sociological imagination is a lot deeper than just common sense.
Author of The Sociological Imagination, C. Wright Mills states, Talking about sociological
imagination is what makes us feel more grounded in the face of all these changes (C. Wright Mills). If
I keep an open mind, and pay attention to the larger world around me, I am better to understand the
connections of what is going on in my individual life, and what is going on in the social world. The
sociological imagination has two lenses to it, the individual lens, and the society lens. The individual
lens deals with personal troubles; Individuals comparing themselves to everyone around them. For
example, with the media, we see all these commercials, and ads that portray false

believe that an intruder loses their rights when engaging in unlawful conduct, conversely, the person
who s fall victim to the invasion is entitled to protect their rights to whatever extent needed, even if

sense that, the criminal act was a threat to their livelihood, considering that the store was their main

Recommendation On Future Policy For The 30 % Solar...
TO: American Public
FROM: Schuyler Ream, PPD 225 Student
DATE: 11/18/2015
SUBJECT: Recommendation on future policy for the 30% Solar Investment Tax Credit
I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY:
Created in the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the 30% Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is the solar
industry s most important and only public policy that supports the deployment of solar energy in the
United States to both the residential and commercial sectors. The 30% ITC has been successful in
increasing deployment and lowering costs of solar energy. Since the eight year extension created by
the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, solar prices have consistently fallen year after
year while installation rates and efficiencies have continued to rise, thus equaling the average cost of
solar energy dropping by more than 73% and a 6500% annual growth rate since 2006, as reported by
an independent analysis done by Bloomberg New Energy and Finance dated September 15, 2015,
commissioned by the Solar Energy Industries Association. However, the ITC is set to expire
December 31, 2016, and a failure to extend the ITC, according industry experts reported by PR
Newswire July 22, 2015, would result in 90 percent of all solar companies going out of business and
thousands of jobs lost . In response to the looming expiration date, Ari Natter, Bloomberg Energy
Reporter, reports the solar industry is launching an all out push starting in 2015 to extend the
investment tax credit . At this point, there are 3

Causes Of Hunger
Why do people die of hunger? What are some solutions to this problem?
The world is very small stage in a vast cosmic arena, yet it can easily accommodate the needs of 7
billion; regardless of this fact, one 9 people still go to bed hungry. According to the World Food
Program there are six major causes of hunger in the world. The poverty trap, lack of investment in
agriculture, climate as well as weather, war displacement, unstable markets, and food wastage. Due to
the increasingly interconnectivity of the global community these issues often cross borders and are
increasingly interconnected. This paper will briefly state as well as analyze each cause for global
hunger and it will also list some solutions to this issue.

Climate and Weather
Per the WFP, Natural disasters such as floods, tropical storms and extended periods of drought are on
the increase with calamitous consequences for the hungry poor in developing countries. Drought is
already one of the most common causes of food shortages in the world. In 2011, persistent lack of rain
caused crop failures and heavy livestock losses in parts of Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya. In 2012 there
was an analogous situation in the Sahel region of West Africa. In many countries, climate change is
exacerbating already tough conditions. The world s fertile farmland is under threat from erosion,
salinization, and desertification. Meanwhile, deforestation by human hands accelerates the erosion of
land which could be used for growing food, (WFP, What Causes Hunger?).
War and Displacement
The world has seen less large scale conflict in the 21st century, yet there have been increased small
scale conflicts like the war in Syria. The civil war which is so large it has actually spilled into open
conflict in Iraq and the border of Turkey has displaced millions of people. Conflicts like this can

Manorialism During The High Middle Ages
Manorialism was an economic structure during the high middle ages that consisted of a lord and his
vassals who served him and his wife. The serfs had more rights than slaves but they were tied to the
land of their lord even when their land was captured by another lord. Unlike slaves, serfs could keep
some of their crops and maintain their own family. Cottagers ranked below serfs and were only given
cottage and a small plot of land to work on. At the top of the working class were freeholders. These
peasants owned their own land and were not subjects of a lord. Peasants would work the fields

Sometimes the wife of the lord would preside over the peasants when the lord was away waging war,
indicating some gender equality. Feudalism originated around the ninth century around the collapse of
the Carolingian empire and aided in the rise of manorialism. During these times of anarchy, people
fought alongside warlords to seek protection from invaders. Invaders like the Vikings frequently
raided villages and churches for silver and food that severely damaged the Carolingian empire, which
proved that the bonds between warlords and their followers were stronger than the bond between the
king and his subjects. Eventually, warlords became lords and their followers became their vassals
through an oath and a special ceremony where the vassal kneeled down in front of the lord. Under this
oath, a vassal swore loyalty to their lord while the lord in return offered protection for the vassal.
Vassals would sometimes fight for their lord and help conquer the land of other lords, and help their
lord become the lord of other lords. In return for their services they were granted a fief, or a plot of
land. Knights would often rent out their land to

Introduction Everyday Use is one of the Walker s most anthologized short stories. It stresses on the
bond of the mother daughter which is solely on African American woman identity in the context of her
family and the kind of relationship she has with the kids. Within the book, the author has used gentle
humour to show Dee/Wangeroe s excess of zeal in trying to calm her heritage, and her overlooking of
the truth of African American experience. The speaker in this story as presented by the author is a
mother of two girls Maggie and Dee. The girls are totally different in terms of their relationship with
the mother and how they are behaving within the American environment. Maggie is portrayed to be
staying home with her mother and lives in an old fashioned. Traditional life while Dee has gone to
school and is more sophisticated. Surprisingly, Dee comes home branded new name Wangero and a
new boyfriend, in her thoughts, she is claiming to take her family heirlooms along as part of claiming
her true identity as an African American. She wants the quilts that she is planning to display on the
walls as artworks because of their fine handiwork. The quilts on the other hand had been promised for
her marriage which the author gives them to her even though Dee finds herself to be entitled to them.
In other words, the book brings about the issue of race and urban settlement in another way by
portraying Maggie and her mother not to be learned and failing to understand the impact of

Sublime In Frankenstein Essay
Most Gothic novels aim to show the sinister side of human nature. They depict the dark terrors which
lie beneath the reader s mentality. The term Gothic suggests a genre which deals with frightening and
mysterious settings by giving connotations of ghostly castles and supernatural events. The Sublime
experience as stated by the critic Longinus is, …a matter of treatment. The particular form of the
sublime experience that requires prepossessing objects is not only the form; it is simply the form in
which enthusiasm preponderates over irony [1] . The Castle of Otranto is the first Gothic novel written
by Horace Walpole in which the idea of the Sublime is presented through its physical, transcending
and overpowering imagery. This ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Edmund Burke a theorist stated in his works that, …Whatever is fitted in any sort to excite the ideas
of pain and danger; that is to say, whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about terrible
objects or operates in a manner analogous to terror, is a source of the sublime [2] . The critic attempts
to assemble an authoritative definition of the sublime here. Furthermore Gothic castles were built as
symbols of systematic power; they were definite assertions of ambition that rested on the owner s
control of others. A sense of empowerment is suggested through this idea therefore indicating to the
Sublime having a dominant role in the Gothic genre. Intended to convey a disputing power, Walpole
implies images of force, hierarchy, stability and command in the novel. The Castle Of Otranto,
attempts to capture a sense of realism through its illustration of settings and characters. Burke
commented that: whatever is fitted to produce such a tension must be productive of a passion similar
to terror; and consequently must be a source of the sublime, though it should have no idea of danger
connected with it [3] . Consequently the Sublime is shown to be produced by a passion which is
closely related to terror, this is evident through the tension created by the settings and characters; a
sense of terror is illustrated. The novel was an original Gothic behind the overthrow of the Roman
Empire, therefore Gothic at the time applied to

Doctor Assisted Suicide And Suicide
Doctor assisted suicide is a topic that has recently become a much larger debated issue than before. A
timeline put together by Michael Manning and Ian Dowbigging shows that prior to Christianity, doctor
assisted suicide was something that was tolerated, and was not heavily questioned (2). Yet, in the 13th
century, Thomas Aquinas had made a statement about suicide as well as doctor assisted suicide, and
his words shaped the Catholic teaching on suicide into what they teach today. Beginning in the 17th
century, Common Law tradition frowned upon suicide, as well as assisting in suicide, and the colonies
had adopted the Common Law principles. (2) In 1828, New York passed a law completely outlawing
the assistance of suicide, and made it to where whomever assisted in the suicide could be tried for
murder. In 1976, California became the first state to allow patients to withdrawal themselves from life
saving medicines, and this Natural Death Act was seen as a gateway to assisted suicide. (3 7) As
controversy about California s Natural Death Act increased, Pope John Paul II released a statement in
1980 which opposed to killing someone out of mercy, but allowed the increased use of painkillers (8).
Although, in 1994 Oregon passed their Death with Dignity act, and with it came incredible amounts of
backlash. Yet, in 2008 Washington state passed the same act to legalize doctor assisted suicide. (10 12)
In most people s lives, they will experience a moment of knowing death is near.

Film Noir Film Analysis
Film Noir is a style that first originated during the early 1940s, influenced by the tumultuous social
and political environment of World War II. These style of films was a subversion from the
conventional gangster films of the 1920s and 1930s. The resurgence of Noir style films in the 1970s
retained the themes of crime, vice and moral ambiguity, but updated the content due to the relaxation
of the Production Code. In this dissertation, the origins of film noir and its techniques will be
examined, with the films The Third Man (Carol Reed, 1949), and L.A Confidential (Curtis Hanson,
1997) contrasted to highlight the impact of the Production Code. According to Paul Schrader s Notes
on Film Noir (1972), there are four catalysts that spawned the film noir style: Post war
disillusionment, a desire for realism, Germanic influences and the hardboiled tradition1. During World
War II, the prominence of dark, brooding Film Noir was overpowered by the American propaganda
produced, but changed after the tragedy of World War II, as American audiences accepted a less
optimistic view of society. This desire for realism is highlighted by the artificial optimism of previous
films pre World War II. Furthermore, The hardboiled narratives of the 1930s influenced Film Noir
through their tough , defeatist attitude of characters who reside in a cynical atmosphere. In terms of
cinema, Film Noir borrows cinematic techniques and style from German Expressionism, which refers
to a film

International Journal of Nursing Studies 46: 413 421 Introduction Pressure ulcers refer to damage that occurs to the skin of a patient. Pressure, shear and friction are among the known causes (Shahin, Dassen Halfens, 2009). A total of 224 patients were approached for the study but only 121 patients consented (Shahin et al, 2009). Some patients refused to participate in the study, while others agreed to participate but failed to sign the consent form. All the patients admitted to the intensive care unit during the month of April to October 2006 were eligible to participate in the study and a questionnaire was used as the tool to collect data. Finally, the collected data was analyzed using the Statistical Package of social Science (SPSS) to give the following data. Results of study The number of patients who complied with the study was 121. 56.2% are males and 43.8% are female (Shahin et al, 2009). Out of the 121 patients, 23 were admitted in a coma. The average length of stay for the 121 patients was one week. Sixteen patients were found to have pressure ulcers on admission. The final results showed a decrease in the number of pressure ulcers. • 4. Truman s Mom Research Paper It is, and always has been a parent s job to raise their child; to bring them up into the world as best they can to become functioning members of society. Truman s mom, like my mom showed him the way the world worked. Unlike my mom, Truman s lied to him throughout the process which gave him a twisted idea of what the real world is. When looking at the way Truman s mom impacted him throughout his life, most would see it as negative. She fundamentally lied to him his entire life in order to cover up the truth. Our parents are the main people in our lives who both introduce us to the world, and help us to understand how things work in it. My mom has significantly shaped the way I view the world because from the beginning she has tried to steer me right by telling me what she believes to be the truths of the world. We all trust our parents to tell us what is right in the world. When Christof is explaining why Truman has never questioned his surroundings he says, We accept the reality of the world with which we re presented. It s as simple as that. • 5. The Master Of Suspense And Alfred Hitchcock Brian De Palma, Sam Raimi, George A. Romero, Dario Argento, William Friedkin, David Cronenberg, Quentin Tarantino, and Steven Spielberg all have two attributes in common; the tactful use of suspense and Alfred Hitchcock. Each person in the list above has, at one point, named Alfred Hitchcock as an influence for their works (IMDb). Hitchcock has been known as, the master of suspense, throughout his career and it shows, not only in the movies that he directed personally, but in the movies of the other directors and producers who aspire to compare to him. Hitchcock s auteur, or reoccurring themes within movies that can be traced back to a director s life and personality to identify parts of him within his own movies include themes such as: an icy blonde female character, personal disabilities and phobias of the main (male) lead, the use of sound studios rather than a natural setting, and a theme of mommy issues associated with the main character. To further look into the auteur of Alfred Hitchcock we must focus on a couple of specific movies and we must know a little bit more about Hitchcock s life. The movies, Vertigo and Rear Window are both the works of Hitchcock, and can both be evaluated in order to find some reoccurring themes associated with this master of suspense. Often, the first theme noticed about these movies is the dark plot and, you guessed it, suspense. In Vertigo the movie begins with a literal cliffhanger, the main character is left dangling off ... • 10. Enframing In this quote Heidegger is expressing what the essence of modern technology is. The essence of modern of technology is Enframing. Enframing is way of revealing, it is an imposition in which humans view the world as ready to use, standing reserve, and disposable. The reason why Enframing is challenging is due to the notion that we view nature as a force that can not only be subdued, but be used to for our benefit. Nature no longer just exists but rather can now be viewed as a potential power source than can be harnessed, but stored for later use. This notion of standing reserve has only become more prevalent with the rise of renewable energy, especially when one considers solar energy. The main benefits of solar power is not only something than can be extracted for usage while the sun is out, but the fact that it can be stored and exploited when the sun is not readily available. ... The Narrator of the book takes a journey on a bus from the grey town, hell, to just outside of heaven. While he is making this trip from the grey town to heaven, he converses with some of his fellow travelers. These travelers are all different, yet all have the mindset of not being able to leave the darkness of the grey town and go to the joy that is heaven. Through his talent in story telling and writing, C.S. Lewis provides many thoughts and questions to be discussed and pondered upon. He leaves ideas open for interpretation through allegorical writing, providing room for the reader to be brought into the story through thought. He gives the reader a thought of what Heaven and hell are like, and how they relate to each other; along with images of how God works in the world and afterlife, and what is waiting for us after we die through the images of the afterlife. The opening of the book brings the reader into the story through the eyes of the narrator. It is as if the reader is the narrator and is going through the grey town himself. We see the book and the images of heaven and hell by the way that the narrator experiences and describes it. This is a great way to go about writing this story, because it has a more intimate connection between the reader and the story. The narrator goes around the grey town and into the bus talking to all the characters he sees. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Therefore, some attribute this phenomena to the governmental propaganda. With this, America not only attacked arts and polities in the USSR, but also gained the reputations in art world that there would be the new art movement leading by the US. As a result, Pollock earned a lot of money and prestige, and pressure too. For entire four years, Pollock had drip painted again and again. At last, he realized that he could not create anything new. Because he did not have great sketching skills, he could not draw something else. The only thing he could do was drip paintings. He had tried some new inventions, but, like paintings he draw before, no one was willing to spend any for those. After the four year, he stopped painting and hated it. • 23. Physics Of Boiling Point Elevation Introduction The experiments studied here were used to help shed light on the importance of molality. Understanding how molality impacts colligative properties is important to understanding solutions. Concepts like entropy can only be seen through experimentations, and visually seeing entropy on a graph helps make the concept easier. The data collected from other groups and data found by this group are all meant to help find correlations between molality and the colligative property of boiling points. Studying boiling point elevation is a key concept that can only be truly understood through hands on experimentation. Materials The materials used for the experiment include: hotplate, temperature probe, data collection interface, ring stand, two utility clamps, paper towels, mass scale, cupcake paper, scoopula, graduated cylinder, stirring rod, beaker, 2.415g of table salt (NaCl,) 7.46g of glucose (C6H12O6,) 400.00ml of distilled water (H2O) Procedure The hot plate was set on the base of the ring stand with both utility clamps attached to the ring stand. They were attached so that one was hanging over the hot plate, while the other clamp faced directly away from the hot plate. After the initial setup was done, a graduated cylinder was used to measure out 100.00ml of distilled water into a beaker. Many people may think that only slim people can do the ballet jumps, especially the classic one featured: the grand jeté, a split in the air. But in reality, it s not the slimness in working, it s the physics. The word, grand jeté, meaning big throw in French, is used to describe the move of the dancer throwing and hanging themselves in the air. In preparation of the jump, the dancer would run for a few steps or do a smaller jump to get their body in motion horizontally, and get their knees bent more to store energy that is used to push the whole body up, like jumping with a spring on, and take off. When the dancer s legs are off the ground, the real challenge starts. Any object off the ground, no matter how much it weighted, near the Earth surface is subjected to the constant gravitational force, which pulls the object, including the ballerina s body, down to the ground. Analysis Of Dalton Conley s You May Ask Yourself Dalton Conley s book, You May Ask Yourself, defines sociological imagination as, The ability to connect the most basic, intimate aspects of an individual s life to seemingly impersonal and remote historical forces (Conley 2015, pg. A 11). Sociological Imagination is the idea of being able to step outside of the box, and evaluate society from an alternative point of view. Symbolic Interactionism, norms, socialization, and the idea of understanding yourself vs. understanding the social aspect of society, are some of the key concepts mentioned throughout this paper, to help break apart what the sociological imagination consists of. Society is changing a lot, and change can sometimes make it hard to cope with the world around us. Sociological imagination is a lot deeper than just common sense. Author of The Sociological Imagination, C. Wright Mills states, Talking about sociological imagination is what makes us feel more grounded in the face of all these changes (C. Wright Mills). If I keep an open mind, and pay attention to the larger world around me, I am better to understand the connections of what is going on in my individual life, and what is going on in the social world. TO: American Public FROM: Schuyler Ream, PPD 225 Student DATE: 11/18/2015 SUBJECT: Recommendation on future policy for the 30% Solar Investment Tax Credit I. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: Created in the Energy Policy Act of 2005, the 30% Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC) is the solar industry s most important and only public policy that supports the deployment of solar energy in the United States to both the residential and commercial sectors. The 30% ITC has been successful in increasing deployment and lowering costs of solar energy. Since the eight year extension created by the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act of 2008, solar prices have consistently fallen year after year while installation rates and efficiencies have continued to rise, thus equaling the average cost of solar energy dropping by more than 73% and a 6500% annual growth rate since 2006, as reported by an independent analysis done by Bloomberg New Energy and Finance dated September 15, 2015, commissioned by the Solar Energy Industries Association. • 41. Manorialism During The High Middle Ages Manorialism was an economic structure during the high middle ages that consisted of a lord and his vassals who served him and his wife. The serfs had more rights than slaves but they were tied to the land of their lord even when their land was captured by another lord. Unlike slaves, serfs could keep some of their crops and maintain their own family. Cottagers ranked below serfs and were only given cottage and a small plot of land to work on. At the top of the working class were freeholders. These peasants owned their own land and were not subjects of a lord. Peasants would work the fields together as a family regardless of sex or age, although mostly men worked with the heavy plows and women wove clothes during the least demanding seasons. The lands ... Feudalism originated around the ninth century around the collapse of the Carolingian empire and aided in the rise of manorialism. During these times of anarchy, people fought alongside warlords to seek protection from invaders. Invaders like the Vikings frequently raided villages and churches for silver and food that severely damaged the Carolingian empire, which proved that the bonds between warlords and their followers were stronger than the bond between the king and his subjects. Eventually, warlords became lords and their followers became their vassals through an oath and a special ceremony where the vassal kneeled down in front of the lord. Under this oath, a vassal swore loyalty to their lord while the lord in return offered protection for the vassal. Vassals would sometimes fight for their lord and help conquer the land of other lords, and help their lord become the lord of other lords. In return for their services they were granted a fief, or a plot of land. Knights would often rent out their land to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

It stresses on the bond of the mother daughter which is solely on African American woman identity in the context of her family and the kind of relationship she has with the kids. Within the book, the author has used gentle humour to show Dee/Wangeroe s excess of zeal in trying to calm her heritage, and her overlooking of the truth of African American experience. The speaker in this story as presented by the author is a mother of two girls Maggie and Dee. The girls are totally different in terms of their relationship with the mother and how they are behaving within the American environment. Surprisingly, Dee comes home branded new name Wangero and a new boyfriend, in her thoughts, she is claiming to take her family heirlooms along as part of claiming her true identity as an African American. The quilts on the other hand had been promised for her marriage which the author gives them to her even though Dee finds herself to be entitled to them. • 43. Sublime In Frankenstein Essay Most Gothic novels aim to show the sinister side of human nature. They depict the dark terrors which lie beneath the reader s mentality. The term Gothic suggests a genre which deals with frightening and mysterious settings by giving connotations of ghostly castles and supernatural events. The Sublime experience as stated by the critic Longinus is, …a matter of treatment. The particular form of the sublime experience that requires prepossessing objects is not only the form; it is simply the form in which enthusiasm preponderates over irony [1] . The Castle of Otranto is the first Gothic novel written by Horace Walpole in which the idea of the Sublime is presented through its physical, transcending and overpowering imagery. This ... Edmund Burke a theorist stated in his works that, …Whatever is fitted in any sort to excite the ideas of pain and danger; that is to say, whatever is in any sort terrible, or is conversant about terrible objects or operates in a manner analogous to terror, is a source of the sublime [2] . The critic attempts to assemble an authoritative definition of the sublime here. Furthermore Gothic castles were built as symbols of systematic power; they were definite assertions of ambition that rested on the owner s control of others. A sense of empowerment is suggested through this idea therefore indicating to the Sublime having a dominant role in the Gothic genre. Intended to convey a disputing power, Walpole implies images of force, hierarchy, stability and command in the novel. The Castle Of Otranto, attempts to capture a sense of realism through its illustration of settings and characters. Burke commented that: whatever is fitted to produce such a tension must be productive of a passion similar to terror; and consequently must be a source of the sublime, though it should have no idea of danger connected with it [3] . Consequently the Sublime is shown to be produced by a passion which is closely related to terror, this is evident through the tension created by the settings and characters; a sense of terror is illustrated. The novel was an original Gothic behind the overthrow of the Roman Empire, therefore Gothic at the time applied to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 45. Doctor Assisted Suicide And Suicide Doctor assisted suicide is a topic that has recently become a much larger debated issue than before. A timeline put together by Michael Manning and Ian Dowbigging shows that prior to Christianity, doctor assisted suicide was something that was tolerated, and was not heavily questioned (2). Yet, in the 13th century, Thomas Aquinas had made a statement about suicide as well as doctor assisted suicide, and his words shaped the Catholic teaching on suicide into what they teach today. Beginning in the 17th century, Common Law tradition frowned upon suicide, as well as assisting in suicide, and the colonies had adopted the Common Law principles. (2) In 1828, New York passed a law completely outlawing the assistance of suicide, and made it to where whomever assisted in the suicide could be tried for murder. In 1976, California became the first state to allow patients to withdrawal themselves from life saving medicines, and this Natural Death Act was seen as a gateway to assisted suicide. (3 7) As controversy about California s Natural Death Act increased, Pope John Paul II released a statement in 1980 which opposed to killing someone out of mercy, but allowed the increased use of painkillers (8). Although, in 1994 Oregon passed their Death with Dignity act, and with it came incredible amounts of backlash. Yet, in 2008 Washington state passed the same act to legalize doctor assisted suicide. • 46. Film Noir Film Analysis Film Noir is a style that first originated during the early 1940s, influenced by the tumultuous social and political environment of World War II. These style of films was a subversion from the conventional gangster films of the 1920s and 1930s. The resurgence of Noir style films in the 1970s retained the themes of crime, vice and moral ambiguity, but updated the content due to the relaxation of the Production Code. In this dissertation, the origins of film noir and its techniques will be examined, with the films The Third Man (Carol Reed, 1949), and L.A Confidential (Curtis Hanson, 1997) contrasted to highlight the impact of the Production Code. According to Paul Schrader s Notes on Film Noir (1972), there are four catalysts that spawned the film noir style: Post war disillusionment, a desire for realism, Germanic influences and the hardboiled tradition1. During World War II, the prominence of dark, brooding Film Noir was overpowered by the American propaganda produced, but changed after the tragedy of World War II, as American audiences accepted a less optimistic view of society. This desire for realism is highlighted by the artificial optimism of previous films pre World War II. Furthermore, The hardboiled narratives of the 1930s influenced Film Noir through their tough , defeatist attitude of characters who reside in a cynical atmosphere. In terms of cinema, Film Noir borrows cinematic techniques and style from German Expressionism, which refers to a film ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
