Tiny House Housing
Just as many people across the country are looking to tiny homes as an affordable housing option,
there are also many communities that are looking to tiny house villages as a method of providing
affordable living options for the homeless in their cities. These small villages of tiny homes, usually
built by volunteers, answer many of the housing issues faced by cities with little affordable housing
options and overwhelming homeless populations. These tiny house villages, however, are often
plagued with challenges such as conflicting city ordinances, building codes, and zoning plans. Tiny
Houses for the Homeless: An Affordable Solution Catches On by Ericka Lundahl, published in Yes!
Magazine, February 2014 looks at the costs, solutions, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

First, in these cases land for the villages, labor for construction, and many of the materials to build
were donated and volunteered. Second, the long term cost of operation and maintenance of the
villages is not addressed. While neither of these issues are unsurmountable obstacles, they need to be
considered by communities proposing tiny house villages as long term solutions to homelessness.
Solving a Community Issue
Cost of Homelessness
As Lundahl points out, the cost of homelessness to communities can be quite substantial. The scope of
the problem affects communities from the local neighborhood and city levels all the way up to state
and federal levels. While her article points out that Denver, CO estimates that each homeless person
costs over $15,000 per year, the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness states that some
studies have shown areas where this cost can reach $30,000 to $50,000 per year (Ending, 2017).
Whichever value is considered, it becomes clear that when comparing the cost of providing affordable
housing solutions to the cost of addressing homelessness, there is much more community value in
providing long term housing solutions than to continuously pour money on the homeless problems.

Pros And Cons Of Lowering The Driving Age
Personally I am very excited to receive my driver s license within the next year, but if all of the
sudden instead of waiting one year I had to wait three to four years because the legal driving age was
raised to either eighteen or twenty one I would wonder why. So should the legal driving age raised?
Driving opens up a whole new world for teenagers. Driving let s teenagers understand what the life of
adulthood is like and the responsibility behind driving, buying food, getting groceries, getting gas, and
so much more. Driving also gives teenagers the responsibility to do things on their own and not rely
on their parents if they want to do something.
Driving to school is a common theme for high school students especially nowadays. Some high school
students don t have access to a school bus and rely on a parent to take them to school. High school
student, Shawn Peterson has said he must scramble for a ride to school each morning because his
mother works. Shawn Peterson is not the only student who relies on driving to school or getting drove
to school and if all of these students now didn t have a car then transportation to school become a
major issue in the U.S (Keilman).
Without driving many teenagers social lives would go down and would prevent teens from having
other activities like a job (Keilman). Driving ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The only real negative of teenage driving is how dangerous it is when all people do is blow it up in the
media when there is so much that can be done to prevent the dangers like improving the drivers ed

is healthy for any teenager and this is just one of the many benefits or positives I have been talking

Pros And Cons Of Assisted Suicide
Debate Paper
On the positive side of assisted suicide, it is strongly believed that the right to assisted suicide allows
the terminally ill to have a clean and fair death. No one wants to live with pain and sorrow. From their
perspective, doctor s help the suffering and terminally ill to die when they choose is nothing wrong.
From what they had argued, the First Amendment to the United States Constitution allows people the
right to freedom of speech, press, petition, religion. With this logic, it would be reasonable to believe
that you are allowed to have the right to die. The right to assisted suicide can help the patients with the
terminally ill to release from pain and suffering, reduce the damaging financial effects of hospital care
on their families, and preserve the individual right of people to determine their own fate.
However, on the negative side of the assisted suicide debate, It is argued that a physician s goal is to
help their patient get the proper care and help they need in order to get better and heal; it should not be
through killing them. From Procon.org, In Compassion in Dying v. State of Washington, it was stated
that physician assisted suicides acts as a slippery slope to those who aren t terminally ill and will take
advantage of it. Once we allow assisted suicides, it opens the way to offering it to people who are no
longer mentally competent. And then to people who are in distress but not terminally ill. So this is
saying that if anyone suffered

Grizzly Man And The Cove Analysis
Final Doc Review
Grizzly Man and The Cove both share a common, fascinating theme: humans relationship with the
wild lives and the nature world. Both films centre on this theme but The Cove explores the slaughter
of dolphins in Taiji, Japan while Grizzly Man focuses on Timothy Treadwell s attempt to live with
grizzly bears. Both have a certain tragic plot about them, The Cove because of the cold blood
slaughter and Grizzly Man because of Treadwell s death. Both choose to focus on one species, for The
Cove its dolphins, Grizzly Man, its grizzly Bears. They may be both focused on the same topic but are

The enemies in The Cove are obvious. They re the committees set up to bring about change but who
get so caught up in legislation that they create little progress. They re the fisherman and multi million

With all these enemies for the activists to face, it s good that we have a hero to root for and in this film
it s Ric O Barry. For years, O Barry was known as the best dolphin trainer in the world, having trained
many of the dolphins who appeared in the Flipper TV series. It was this particular job that convinced
him that dolphins were not meant to be kept in captivity but to be free in the

Automotive Technology. Currently, he is in the Health and Fitness Program at Sandhills Community

Essay on Asher Lev and The Window
Looking Beyond the Glass Could humiliation and pain come from something as simple as a glass in a
wooden frame? Throughout the novel, My Name Is Asher Lev by Chiam Potok, much of inner
characters are revealed through the symbol of the window. The mother, the father, and Asher all face
many struggles and the use of the window helps one to understand them. To begin with, the mother,
Rivkeh, is shown a great deal by the window. Potok writes, About an hour after supper, it began to
snow heavily. My mother and I stood at the living room window, watching for my father. I hate this,
my mother murmured, staring out the window (79 80). This expresses the worry that she has for her
husband, Aryeh, and his journey back home. For example, the ... Show more content on

The father s troubles are also shown through the symbol of the window. Aryeh spends a great deal of
time traveling for the Rebbe. In book one, He [goes] to the window and stood gazing out at the busy
parkway. He paced the floor. He [seems] caged. He saw me looking at him, I m not made for desks,
Asher. He rubbed the side of his face, I should be there, not here (26 27). This shows how the window
is a barrier for his father. Aryeh thinks that he should not be behind it, but instead, out helping people
and continuing to travel for the Rebbe. Also in book one, Potok writes, He stood looking through the
window at the street outside, quietly singing his father s melody... He held his hands to both sides of
his head. Standing there, with the room in shadows and his faintly illumined features reflected in the
window that looked out onto the dark street... (15). As well as a barrier, the window also serves as a
passage way to the master of the universe. To show the passage way again, Potok says, He was
standing in front of the window chanting softly from the Book of Psalms (26). For the father, the
window is ultimately a way out of the apartment into the religious world. Many of Asher s
characteristics are exposed through the window as well. When Asher is on the train with Jacob Kahn,
he sees his reflection in the window. He tells that, I spent the rest of the journey looking at my
reflection in that dark window of the

Legal Liberalism Calls For Equality
Legal liberalism calls for equality before the law; it was a manner to ensure that there shall be equality
before all citizens, protecting them from unjust statutes or acts the state may incorporate. However,
despite the protections in our constitution, there are instances in American history where the Supreme
Court has endorsed other branches to violate or limit its citizens economic freedom. In this essay I will
cite court cases and documents that incited conflict, most notably substantive due process and liberty
of contract. In light of these cases it prompted a massive transformation in constitutional jurisprudence
such as Equal protections clause, right to privacy, and criminal defendants rights that moved the nation

In reaction, the butchers filed a lawsuit claiming that this Louisiana law violated their fundamental
rights to pursue happiness and to pursue their calling as butchers. They argued that the right was
protected under the privileges or immunities clause of the 14th amendment, which had been ratified in
1848. In a 5 4 decision, the supreme Court conflicted with the butchers reasoning. The Supreme Court
ruled that the monopoly inflicted by the state did not violate the 13th and 14th amendments (privilege
and immunities clause); in other words, the claim did not forbid limits on the rights to use one s
property (Lecture). Essentially, the Supreme Court rendered the privileges and immunities clause of
the 14th amendment insignificant. In the Field and Bradley dissent, they argue that the purpose of the
immunities clause was to limit state action, Bradley went so far as to incorporating the Bill of Rights
into the dissent. The Slaughter house case is one of the Supreme Court s worst decisions plus an
example of the U.S. violating its Constitution. The 14th amendment, privileges and immunities clause
states: No State shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of
citizens of the

Essay on Time for New Ways of Hiring
There s a trend that is making it difficult to get a job for a certain company. Companies now a days are
mainly hiring people based on their looks, attractive people who fit a certain image such as
Abercrombie Fitch. There are many ways to make money. Greenhouse, in his article, Going for the
Look, but Risking Discrimination, shows that some stores hire people who fit the company image.
While many people will argue that hiring based on looks is discriminating, this trend seems to be
working at the moment and is making a lot of money for companies. Hiring based on looks may seem
wrong, but is necessary for companies to make money and compete against other companies. Marshal
Cohen, a senior industry analyst, states, Being able to find ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Many companies are making money because they hired good looking people who seem to be
successfully attracting people into their doors, buy problems are starting to arise. People who apply for
jobs are being turned down just because they don t fit the company s image and people are starting to
feel discriminated. Donna Harper, a supervisory attorney, states, We all can t be Anglo, athletic and
young. This shows that not everybody will fit a certain image that a company is looking for and
people with good retail experience seem to be losing job opportunities to young, good looking people.
Companies are hiring incompetent workers and people are getting fed up with it. There have been
many companies getting sued and therefor losing money to these lawsuits. Companies should start
thinking twice before they turn down good workers. In conclusion, companies need to stop hiring
based on looks because it is not going to keep working. Hiring smarter people who can find many
ways to attract people into a store who will probably not fit the company image but most likely will fir
the company s bottom line and that is to make money. No more incompetent workers or lawsuits
becoming a company s problem. A company can finally make money the correct way and will not be
risking that people will feel discriminated. Companies will improve and make many benefits by hiring
more knowledgeable people. It will also be a fine stop into

Summary Of The Laughing Heart And The Journey
Life is full of decision making, and many obstacles that will come in your way to try and stop your
path and prevent you from achieving what you must achieve. In the poems A Laughing Heart, by
Charles Bukowski, and The Journey, by Mary Oliver, the authors both meet at describing what life is
like and how to live life like the fullest, even though there will be things to stop you, and you may stop
yourself. Both of these poems point out that you have to be the main character in your life, you have
to beat everybody or every obstacle that will trouble you, you must overcome it to achieve the highest
points of your life. In The Laughing Heart, the author says and the more often you learn to do it, the
more light there will be. (14, 15). Charles Bukowski is saying that if you learn to successfully
overcome your obstacles, your life will continually get better because there are less problems to face.
A similar line in The Journey, is ...as you left their voices behind,/ the stars began to burn through the
sheets of clouds,/ and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own, (24 29). The
author is saying that as you started to seize opportunity, solve problems and face challenges in your
life, you became stronger, and you became the main character in your life. The theme of these two
poems is that your life is your life, and even though you will have to overcome obstacles and face
challenges, you must be the main character in your life to live your

Arranged Marriage in Bread Givers, by Anzia Yezierska
Arranged Marriages have been around since time can remember. An arranged marriage is a marital
union between a man and a woman who were selected to be wedded together by a third party.
Historically, arrange marriages were the main way to marry. In certain parts of the world, it is still the
primary approach. There are two types of arrange marriages. The first is a traditional marriage where
the children can, with strong objections, refuse to marry their soon to be spouse. In a forced marriage,
the children have no say in the matter. Bread Givers shows an excellent representation of the pressures
on children from their parents to be married against their will.
The factors of arranged marriages are chiefly superficial. The most ... Show more content on

In North America, people will argue that love needs to happen before marriage but, historically, this is
actually a very new notion. Mr. Smolinsky was in shock when his daughters wanted to marry for love.
He asked his wife if they even looked at each other before the engagement and she replied, Maybe if I
had the sense of my daughters in America, I would have given you a good look over before the
wedding (76). This implies that if she had the choice, she would have married for love or perhaps a
different man at least.
Dowries are extremely important to consider when it comes to arranged marriages. A dowry is a gift
that could be goods, money, or land that a bride s family will give to the groom to marry the bride.
Dowries could be used to bring two powerful families together by having their children marry, for
example, royal arranged marriages. In the Biblical sense, a girl who is still a virgin is more of prize
than one who is not. In a way dowries make the daughter or son feel as property as told by Sara
Smolinsky, to [my father] I was nothing but his last unmarried daughter to be bought and sold (205).
Mr. Smolinsky stated, It s not enough to take my Bessie without a dowry. You must pay me yet (47).
Mr. Smolinsky, being the stubborn man he is, decided when Berel Bernstein asked for Bessie s hand in
marriage without the need of a dowry, that Mr. Smolinsky should get a bride price as well. A bride

Dust Bowl Case Study
All through in the 1930s, eastern Colorado alongside most of the Southern Plains states, experienced
outrageous dry seasons. Baca County was among the regions hardest hit, close to the focal point of
what was named the Dust Bowl. Southeastern Colorado got just 126 aggregate creeps of dampness for
every one of the years somewhere around 1930 and 1939. This was 205 inches not exactly the earlier
decade, and well beneath the 18 inches yearly expected to develop wheat. No rain implied no

Clean was normal in the semi dry territories of Colorado when the high fields winds blew, so nobody
was truly amazed to see a couple of dusters in eastern Colorado in 1931. They returned the following
year with more energy, and by 1933 the clean tempests were intense to the point that regular daily

The Black Cat Insanity Analysis
Edgar Allan Poe shows his insanity in the Black Cat through irony. The narrator says in the begining
of the story; My immediate purpose is to place before the world, plainly, succinctly, and without
comment, a series of mere household events (1). Later readers discover the fact that the events are in
no way mere household events, buts much more gruesome and highlights the narrator s perverseness.
Later, the narrator buries his wife in a very loosely constructed wall, yet when the police come by he
tells them; By the bye, gentlemen, this this is a very well constructed house (5). As he tells them this
he knocks against the wall and the cat cries. This stirs the policemen and we soon realize it was not a

are in middle school I will have better people to talk to, and never have to talk to him again. During
middle school I remember not speaking my thoughts because of fear of how they would react, so I just
didn t say much. Eventually they stopped talking to me or inviting me to do stuff with them. I guess I
was no different to them than the boy walking down the street. This experience

Essay On Juvenile And Juvenile Justice System
Throughout the 18th century, juveniles and adults were subject to the same criminal justice system.
Children and adolescents were regarded as adults and treated as such in court and correction. In the
19th century, a reform took place which aimed at addressing the issue of juveniles being incarcerated
in adult jails. A new perception of juveniles surfaced. They were no longer regarded as adults, but
instead as persons who have not yet reached adult cognitive and moral development. This new
perception has led reformers to create a new system, one that focuses on child and adolescent
offenders exclusively and that viewed adolescents and children as more open to rehabilitation. The
first juvenile court was established in 1899 in Cook County, Illinois. It shifted the focus away from
punishment and instead aimed at identifying the underlying causes of the delinquent behavior ... Show

between both systems and discuss the principles that build the basis for the different approach which

which can be explained by the fact that the juvenile system grew out of the criminal justice system at
the end of the 19th century. Until this day, both systems hold

An Essay On Ender s Journey
In the novel Ender s Game by Orson Scott Card, the main character, Ender, undergoes a journey to a
secret battle school in space. Ender is recruited by the government to fight a war against an alien race
trying to invade Earth. Is he violent and war driven like his brother or is he nice and peace seeking like
his sister? In the story his fear of becoming like his brother begins to turn Ender into his brother. This
fear is finally realized at the end of the book when he unknowingly killed millions of people in order
to commit the genocide of the alien race and end the war.
Ender takes many journeys throughout the book, his literal, and most obvious, being his trip to the

Catabolism In Soccer
The Virtues of Injury Catabolism and anabolism. The first breaks down; the second builds back up. If
I were a molecule, soccer would be a catalyst for my body. Soccer has broken me down and built me
back up several times over. Soccer has taken away bits and pieces of me, and it has replaced my
perspective on the world in exchange. Although I share a love/hate relationship with the sport, I am
grateful to have soccer in my life; it has helped guide and mold me into a better person. Injuries are
usually not something to be grateful for, but I love mine. From the earliest days of playing soccer,

As a smaller player on the field, most of the time my ankles were getting assaulted by kids one and a
half times my size. Fortunately, two consecutive years included a nasty ankle injury for me. Thanks to
other players, soccer had the opportunity to reteach me. The first injury occurred between eighth and
ninth grade, right before I moved up to high school soccer. I was playing indoor soccer between
outdoor seasons, since my friends from school made a team, and during one fateful game, I jumped to
head the ball before an opposing player could and ended up drawing the short end of the stick in the
ordeal. I was successful in reaching the ball first, but he decided to push me just before I landed,
causing me to plant my right foot improperly on the ground and place my full weight on the side of
my foot. There was an immediate pop. It felt as if my foot detached and I was standing on the bare
nub of my ankle. There was blinding pain, yet no pain at all. Just pin pricks of blood flowing
furiously. Before anyone could ask why I was limping, I was off the field and icing my ankle. After a
late night visit to the emergency room when the swelling continued to grow and I could no longer put
any pressure on my foot, it was discovered that I had a high ankle sprain. The doctors ordered me to
wear an air cast for the following two to three months with a strict ban on running, along with minimal
walking to get to class only patience is a virtue. However, the following season I managed to hurt the
same ankle all over again during practice. While going to shoot the ball, I had the unfortunate
circumstance of a defender trying to clear the ball at the same moment. Our feet hit the ball at the
exact same time, and the earth shattering force of contact left both of us on the ground holding our
ankles as the pain throbbed each time blood pumped through our injured veins. At this point, I

Personal Legend InThe Alchemist, By Paulo Coehlo
To achieve one s Personal Legend, one must work hard to accomplish it. This is not an easy task to do,
especially when you are a young shepherd boy. The Alchemist is a novel written by Paulo Coehlo. The
main character is a boy, Santiago, which seeks out his Personal Legend and the alchemist helps him
discover himself along the way. In the novel, Coelho uses symbols, character development, and setting
to create a deeper meaning. Santiago does not use his own motivation to pursue his Personal Legend,
but it is through the efforts of others that his Personal Legend is fulfilled.
In the novel, Coelho uses symbols of love, Urim, and Thummim, and sheep to create meaning and
emotion in the novel. Coelho uses the symbol of love, or Fatima to show her efforts in Santiago s
Personal Legend. My father went away one day, but he returned to my mother, and he has always
come back since then. (Coelho, 122). Santiago has a decision to make: stay in the oasis, or go to the
pyramids. Fatima tells him to go find his treasure and assures him she will be waiting. Coelho
demonstrates through Fatima Santiago s great love for her, which becomes a motivational factor to
return to when Santiago is on his journey. Without the help of Fatima, he would have stayed in the
oasis. Coelho uses Urim and Thummim to model Santiago s benightedness and ignorance. I promised
that I would make my own decisions, (Coelho, 41). Santiago is given a gift of Urim and Thummim,

Compare And Contrast The Hindu Creation Story
There are many creation stories, which try to tell us about the beginnings of life, but there is only one
true creation story. Hindu creation story takes many similarities from, the Bible. The Bible creation
story starts with nothing. The earth was void and darkness roamed the surface of the waters. Then God
commanded there to be light and light filled the atmosphere. The Hindu creation story takes many
features from the true creation story, the Bible. But once further examined, man takes a different path
from the real creation story and the Hindu creation story will start to develop its own personality.

Cold War Nuclear Weapons
Due to the fear of being attacked by multiple atomic bombs, Stalin backed down. In defense, he
started the development and research of the atomic bomb. Later on this would catch the attention of
the U.S. One of the ways the U.S helped Germany during this blockade, was the creation of the North
Atlantic Treaty Organization, a military alliance, on April 4, 1949. NATO was a mutual defense treaty
that was set up to provide Western Europe with military aid. The U.S, Canada, and 10 Western
European nations were the ones who signed the treaty. The goal of the treaty was to prevent the
expansion of the Soviets, and to protect West Germany. This lead to the nuclear arms race between the

The U.S and Soviet Union were starting to develop weapons such as intercontinental ballistic missiles
(ICBM s) and submarine ballistic missiles (SLBM s), which both were armed with nuclear warheads.
The creation of these missiles lead to biological warfare because they were used as threats between the
U.S and Russia. And knowing what treacherous effects the nuclear weapons had, both countries used
that to each his advantage to scare each other. After constantly increasing their numbers of missiles
being made, both the U.S and Russia had enough missiles to destroy themselves and the world over

development of spy satellites, the planes didn t need to be used because the satellites provided more

Osteocytes s Role In Bone Homeostasis
Osteocytes are the most abundant cell type in human bones and play a fundamental role in bone
homeostasis. Representing 95% of all mature bone cells and have the longest lifespan in all bone cells,
up to decades, osteocytes are the key to bone integrity1. They are initially derived from osteoblasts,
residing within bones and take part in bone metabolism through excessive communication with other
bone cell populations, including osteoblasts, osteoclasts and most importantly, osteocyte progenitors.
Osteocytes secrete soluble signalling factors that regulate both bone formation and bone dissociation.
Osteocytes have a stellate shape, with cell body of around 15 micrometers. In mature bones,
osteocytes form circular structures termed osteons, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Invasive Species Invasive Species
An organism that is non native to an ecosystem can be defined as an invasive species. Animals, plants,
and fungi can all be considered invasive, exotic, or alien species if they are not originally from that
habitat. These intruders alter the pathways of native organisms by competitive exclusion, niche
displacement, hybridization, introgression predation, and in severe cases extinction (Mooney 2001).
Invasive species can severely and adversely affect populations of native species. Foreign organisms
can be studied around the globe and dedicated ecologists have the responsibility of studying how these
non native species are impacting ecosystems. There are many ways that a species may become
introduced into a new ecosystem. Human activity has long played a role in the translocation of many
types of plants and animals. Throughout time humans have transported species across land, sea, and
sky for recreational purposes, medicinal purposes, and aesthetic purposes. Though the human species
is largely responsible for species translocation, we are not the only cause. Abiotic forces like the wind
and sea play a large role in transporting various organisms and seeds to new and far lands. Not all
introduced species are bad and some have proven to be quite beneficial to new ecosystems. Though
there are beneficial introduced species, more tend to hurt existing ecosystems rather than help it.
When introduced species exploit a specific species trait or fill a vacant niche in an

Chapter 20: Replay and Critique of David King s Reframing _______________
There is value in having students compare their own thinking about the RFK High case with the
reframing process depicted for David King in the chapter. One way to do this is to ask students to read
the case, stop there, and engage in their own effort to reframe using the same questions David King
used. (This can be done either individually or in groups.) Once students have developed their own
diagnoses, they can read the remainder of the chapter and compare their thinking with David King s.
Another option appears in Exercise 20.1.
Chapter 20: Applying Reframing to Cases or Personal Experience_________
The chapter focuses on putting it all together: integrating everything learned about organizations and
leadership into more comprehensive and powerful understanding and action. The reframing process
illustrated in the chapter can be applied to almost any case or experience: students personal cases,
published cases, films or fiction, or class experiences (role plays, experiential activities, team
experiences, the course). Instructors can, for example, have students study a challenging case
(multiple suggestions are offered elsewhere in this instructor s guide) and then, either individually or

Essay on Ap World Similarities and Differences China and Rome
Han China and Rome The Han Dynasty and the Roman Empire both had a great influence not only on
its people but the world as a whole. The two had similar and different methods of political control.
Both ruled their people under a bureaucracy, they had civil servants to maintain their large empires,
and their foundations were made of great and strong rulers. Aside from the similarities they also had
several differences. Take China for example, they focused more on Confucianism and they had a
Mandate of Heaven. Rome on the other hand used entertainment to distract and control the masses of
its population.

Civilians could obtain government jobs by taking examinations. Loyal followers were also rewarded
government posts by their emperor. Now what would The Han Dynasty and The Roman Empire do
without their great and strong emperors? The emperors are pretty much the building foundations of the
empire. Rome had the one and only Octavian who later took the title of Augustus. Augustus was Julius
Caesar s grandnephew and adopted son. He became the Roman Empire s first emperor after defeating
the combined forces of Mark Anthony and Queen Cleopatra. He brought the empire to a long and
peaceful period which is known as Pax Romana. He also glorified Rome and created a form of
government which is known as a bureaucracy that survived for centuries. There were other great
emperors of Rome like: Nerva, Hadrian, Trajan, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelias. Nerva began
the custom of adopting heir. Hadrian consolidated earlier conquests and reorganized the bureaucracy.
Trajan help the empire reach its greatest extent; he undertook vast bulding programs and enlarged

Marcus Aurelias brought the Roman Empire to its height of economic prosperity, defeated invaders,

Santa Is Real Essay
Is Santa real? This is the one question that everyone asks at some point in their life. I have been asking

But secretly, I had a small feeling that Santa was not real. Every year I would see more kids stop

But I knew one day the day would come where I would be told that Santa wasn t real and I would join

Dragons In J. R. Tolkien s The Hobbit
What does the word dragon mean to us? Generally, if one is asked this question, the response would
be unintelligent dangerous weapons of destruction . However, this is not the case in J.R.R Tolkien s
The Hobbit , nor is it true for the early mythology of dragons. Instead, this modern definition is
replaced with one of, greedy, intelligent beings with human characteristics . Hence, a question arises
as to why the image of dragons has been drastically downgraded throughout literature? To answer this
question, I will first begin by isolating passages from Tolkien s The Hobbit in an attempt to describe
certain features of Smaug the magnificent. Afterwards, I will partake in exemplifying the written style
of dragons in the history of literature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Traditional dragons were portrayed when the certain writers have been able to preserve the wonder of
the creatures. Whereas, modern dragons are illustrated when select stories have implemented new
components that have served as counter productive as depicted by the Harry Potter series which
relegates the true plot potential of these beasts. Additionally, these modern dragons tend to be
obstacles for the main hero to overcome, which is a stark contrast from the traditional dragons.
Therefore, for what reason have writers decided to downgrade the beasts? Unerman (2002) puts forth
the belief that fictional evil is more convincing and more frightening when people, not dragons, are
the true enemy (pg. 100). In addition, another argument could be made in that dragons such as Smaug
will overshadow the main human villain, therefore, by downgrading the beasts to simple plot
obstacles, it allows for the dragons not to overshadow the main villain, and I cannot accept either
argument. Suggesting that humanity allows for more engaging villains is absurd, considering that the
simple task of personifying a dragon in Smaug made for one of the greatest, psychologically
complicated, and utmost captivating villain in all of literature. Nonetheless, one may argue that
Tolkien s Smaug serves as the same purpose as a dragon in the Harry Potter series; a plot obstacle that
cause destruction. Granted that this notion may appear plausible, it proves false in terms of
characteristics of the dragons individually. In other words, the dragon in Harry Potter happens to be
illustrated as regular animal that features no unique qualities, whereas Smaug is categorized as a
complex and unique character, in terms of his motives, intelligence, and the threat he poses to those
who dare challenge

Oodgeroo Noonuccal Essay
Oodgeroo Noonuccal an Australian aboriginal poet and fighter of Aboriginal rights
In my essay I will present an Australian poet from the 20th century who after having discovered her
aboriginal roots had even changed her name and became an activist for the Aboriginal rights.
Oodgeroo Noonuccal was born as Kathleen Jean Mary Ruska on 3 November 1920 on North
Stradbroke Island in South East Queensland. Kath was a descendant of the Noonuccal people of
Minjerribah. Her totem was Kabool the carpet snake, who could not be eaten by his people. She talks
about this in her poem Ballad of the Totems. The young Kath was strongly influenced by her parents.
Her mother, Lucy McCulloch was one of the stolen generation . At the mission school she was not
taught to read or write, of which she bitterly resented, because the nuns taught her to be useful to wash
clothes, cook, clean and iron in order to work as a domestic servant in a white household. She ... Show

collection, The Dawn is at Hand , was published by Jacaranda in 1966. A third collection, My People:
A Kath Walker Collection, contained poems from the first two collections, and in later editions added
new poems and essays.
During the 1960 s not only her reputation as a poet developed but she also became increasingly
engaged in the political sphere.
Although loyal to these organisations, Walker was not convinced they could provide answers to
Australia s deep seated racism towards Aborigines. Her quest for fundamental political solutions to
Indigenous disadvantage soon propelled her into the orbit of the Communist Party of Australia and the

(The land and People of South Africa) This piece of art is written by a South African poet by the name
of Don Mattera. This poem embellished the distress and hardship that South Africa and the people of
this unique and beautiful land had to go through during the times of Apartheid. During these tragic
times of separation people of South Africa, that were against this racial segregation, stood up for their
rights through many ways such as poetry and petition. Others, such as F.W de Klerk expressed his
dislike for this cruel act of disconnection through politics and made it his goal to make South Africa
racially equal and whole. During apartheid in South Africa F.W de Klerk took a stand to fight for
human rights through tough times of racial separation to equality by ending apartheid.
Apartheid was a government system that South Africa used from the years 1948 to 1994 ( Frederik
Willem De Klerk ). The word apartheid means separateness which is exactly what the government

cheaper, albeit less effective, models to $400 for higher quality air purification. Not to mention the
added repair and maintenance costs of anywhere between $20 to $200 for cleaning, replacement
filters, et cetera. To clarify, the cost of breathing easy can add up very quickly, but the cost is not just
financially it is physically too. Air pollution does not come in the form of a giant, flying two headed
dragon and does not typically manifest on the body like a ghastly goiter. Air pollution is invisible to
the human eye. To see it, special equipment from NASA or other research facilities would be required.
But just because it is not visible, does not mean it is not present, air pollution is everywhere and
sometimes more dense and deadly in some places than others. This poisonous air is caused by motor
vehicles, planes, ships, energy plants, and much more, things quite necessary for society to function.
The solution to dirty air cannot be so drastic as to ban automobiles or energy plants, and it would not
happen overnight. However, society can take several meaningful, if small, steps to reduce air pollution
to the point where it can decrease the number of stroke, asthma, and

Menstruation In America
This is a press release from Assemblymember Cristina Garcia that states that she has introduced a bill
in order to make feminine hygiene products exempt from sales tax. She writes that this is being done
in order to eliminate the tampon tax and bring more gender equity to California s tax code. According
to the release, women in California pay over $20 million annually in taxes on tampons and sanitary
napkins, paying on average seven dollars a month for forty years, and Garcia writes that this
especially affects women with less money and that taxing these items is a form of discrimination not
only against women, but also those who are not privileged. The report points out that Viagra is not
taxed, and looking at this and the other items ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This article served as the announcement of Kimberly Clark s launch of the U by Kotex feminine
hygiene product line, which was described at the time as an innovative feminine care solution that
offers bold new packaging, feminine product design and empowers women to change the conversation
surrounding women s health. The company made its packaging more vibrant because it wanted to
switch the conversation surrounding menstruation from one of shame to one of openness and honesty.
Within the article, a vice president of the company is quoted as saying that while advertisers have been
perpetuating the cultural stigma (of menstruation) by emphasizing that the best menstrual period is
one that is ignored, today s Kotex will stand for truth, transparency and progressive vagina care. Kotex
decided to make this move in part due to the results of a survey the company conducted where 70
percent of the females who responded said that it is time to change the way society talks about vaginal

Adam Smith The Wealth Of Nations
In the novel, The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith attempts to construct a new, fresh
understanding of what economics is. Smith was not content with the mercantilist system that
existed at the time of writing the novel (1776), however, he gives a very convoluted but creative
and unique account of an economic system found in the simple nature of mankind. The text is
defined through the use of fact heavy segways, tables and graphs, and Smith s personal research,
establishing his pledge to give evidence for what seem like timeless observations about the
nature of economics.
Books one and two mainly focus on the evolution of the division of labor idea and
describing how this division adds to the wealth of a society by creating a surplus that can be
divided among ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Book three discusses Great Britain s social evolution, which begins, according to Smith,
with hunting and gathering societies and progresses through agricultural stages to ultimately
arrive at a state of international commerce. Smith claims that the fall of Rome and the beginning
of feudalism impeded progression by creating lower efficiency.
LaPenotiere 2
Book four criticizes mercantile commerce that characterized Europe during Smith s time of
writing the novel. Smith s main criticism of mercantilism is that it directly related precious
metals with value and wealth. Smith claims that, the real measure of the wealth of a nation is the
amount of goods and services that the nation creates, which, in today s society, is very true.
Coming to this realization, Smith comes up with the idea of a nation s gross domestic product,
which is an essential component of modern day economics. A nation s wealth isn t increased by
hoarding precious metals, but by expanding the market through production capacity, also simply
known as, increasing trade.
In the fifth and final book, Smith discusses what roles of government are appropriate

Summary Of Matty s The Messenger
Imagine a place where one s home town is being altered by a mayor with wrong reasoning. Were a
plan for a local forest with special powers is being destroyed. Matty is curious about what is going on
in the sacred woods down the street and does whatever it takes to find out. The Messenger by Lois
Lowry is a book that the Puritans would obliterate due to law breaking citizens, opposing authority
and being a naturally born sinner The Puritans would despise The Messenger because of law breaking
citizens. When Matty was 15 years old she had obtained a job delivering local mail and newspaper.
She had stumbled across an abandoned factory were they used to make pencils. Behind the factory
was a patch of woods were they used to dump and burn the sawdust. Matty would often go to the
woods to relax and think about her life when she wanted to be alone. She believed that the woods had
a special power for cheering her up when she was feeling down. One day when she was delivering the
newspaper she had dropped it and seen that they had begining plans to logout the forest and knocking
down the factory for a new shopping plaza. Matty knew the mayor was behind all of this and she didn

would sneak out of the house and meet with her friends there. They had agreed on making a protest

logging equipment were being brought in. Her parents knew she was sneaking out at night and went to
confront her about it. When they asked her why she would not say so they grounded her. Needless to
say Matty snuck out that night again to begin her protest plans for the next day. The next day the
construction crew was shocked what they seen when coming into

Analysis Of The Movie I Like The Way You Die
I like the way you die, boy Django said to Big John Brittle as John is shot to death by Django, an
African American free slave. That scene felt very satisfying especially since Big John Brittle was
about to whip a little poor slave girl. Hitler in Inglourious Basterds was killed by a Jewish solider who
got the opportunity to shoot Hitler multiple times in the torso and face; this Jewish solider had a look
of vengeance in his eyes as he shot him. Notice how both these films have a feel good story about how
someone weak was able to kill and defeat their oppressors. Looking at Tarantino s two recently films
from 2012 and 2009, Django Unchained and Inglourious Basterds, you see that Tarantino wanted to
make a film where the setting is in history s worst timeline along with the oppressed in that timeline
take down the oppressor. This notion seems to have a direct appeal to the audience s feelings; it gives
them a sense of justice that the cruel oppressors that controlled the oppressed in that timeline got
punishment and even death by the oppressed. Tarantino more recently films, including Django
Unchained, The Hateful Eight, and Inglourious Basterds, are all set in the past with Django Unchained
and Inglourious Basterds set in history s darkest timelines. Django Unchained is set in the 19th
century in the United States when slavery was legal and African Americans were treated sub human
while Inglourious Basterds setting was during the World War II/the holocaust. Django and

What Is A Fairy Trip Essay
One sunny day, I found myself in a strange city on a mountain covered with something white and
cold. Everything started when I was reading a story about fairy creatures in a forest. While I was
reading, I wished to have a chance to go to the forest and met them. Unfortunately, when I wished
that, one of those fairy creatures achieved my wish. There was only one problem with that, and the
problem was that it is hard to go back home again. Thus, my journey trying to go back had started.
What I needed was a magician, who could give me the wishes box, and so, I would be able to go home
again. Luckily, I had my smartwatch, which could help me think of what to do. Pico, my smartwatch,
told me that the magicians from the Fairyland are brilliant enough to find a wishes box for me. Thus, I
set off to the Fairyland to find the most masterful magician in the world, Mr. Wise Man.
Being there, I had a chance to see how fairies could live above all those years. I realized that those
creatures are clever although they are smaller than us. They worked hard to do their work and
organized everything. They traveled in magical crafts and lived in houses that could shrink to the size
of small capsules. So, they can hide from the human world. Their streets were astonishing as they
were rainbows, and their children and guests used clouds as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Wise Man, who preferred to live alone. Finding him was like looking for a needle in a haystack. No
one helped me because they were all afraid of me because my appearance sounded not familiar to
them. While I was there, it was rumored that a Mr. Evil came to fairyland. Pico told me that the Mr.
Evil was an old and strong man, whose job was to hunt fairies. The rumors developed that Mr. Evil
became a man, who could grow smaller and became a child. So, he can hunt fairies without raising
any suspicion. Anyway, who Mr. Evil was, I did not love that he was fairies hunter. I am NOT hunter!

Intervention In The Restaurant Review
The intervener is the author and publisher of the restaurant review (D Magazine) and the intervention
is the restaurant review itself which attempted to promote the author s negative interpretation of her
dining experience. Hill Agnus s review reveals discrepancy between her actual restaurant experience
and her expectancies. The dominant name proposed by the intervener can be described as a failed
ambitious attempt. The author asserts the restaurant s level of ambition at the beginning of the review
and dismantles their attempts by emphasizing how the restaurant falls short of the author s
expectations. The author compensates for the deviances that anomalies have created by negatively
recategorizing the attributes of her experience, to suggest avoidance behavior. I used the intervention
of attention as entry point for analyzing the original restaurant review because this subsystem
emphasizes the communication patterns used by the author to compensate for the incompleteness of
the interpretative categories assigned to the restaurant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The author uses tactics of threat, exchange, and integry to encourage the acceptance of her
interpretation of experience. Through a threat tactic, more power is distributed to the customers of the
restaurant because they directly contribute to the restaurant s income and hold the potential to
persuade other customers. A power shift in hierarchy is created through the exchange motivation the
author alludes to when she suggests that employees provide services for customers in exchange for
payment. By drawing attention to the fact that customers pay in response to service and can impact the
opinions of potential customers, the tactic of integry is utilized by distributing equal power to
customers and the food critic. The entry subsystem of attention challenges power roles among system
components and increases awareness to non needs meeting

  • 2. Tiny House Housing Just as many people across the country are looking to tiny homes as an affordable housing option, there are also many communities that are looking to tiny house villages as a method of providing affordable living options for the homeless in their cities. These small villages of tiny homes, usually built by volunteers, answer many of the housing issues faced by cities with little affordable housing options and overwhelming homeless populations. These tiny house villages, however, are often plagued with challenges such as conflicting city ordinances, building codes, and zoning plans. Tiny Houses for the Homeless: An Affordable Solution Catches On by Ericka Lundahl, published in Yes! Magazine, February 2014 looks at the costs, solutions, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, in these cases land for the villages, labor for construction, and many of the materials to build were donated and volunteered. Second, the long term cost of operation and maintenance of the villages is not addressed. While neither of these issues are unsurmountable obstacles, they need to be considered by communities proposing tiny house villages as long term solutions to homelessness. Solving a Community Issue Cost of Homelessness As Lundahl points out, the cost of homelessness to communities can be quite substantial. The scope of the problem affects communities from the local neighborhood and city levels all the way up to state and federal levels. While her article points out that Denver, CO estimates that each homeless person costs over $15,000 per year, the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness states that some studies have shown areas where this cost can reach $30,000 to $50,000 per year (Ending, 2017). Whichever value is considered, it becomes clear that when comparing the cost of providing affordable housing solutions to the cost of addressing homelessness, there is much more community value in providing long term housing solutions than to continuously pour money on the homeless problems. ... Pros And Cons Of Lowering The Driving Age Personally I am very excited to receive my driver s license within the next year, but if all of the sudden instead of waiting one year I had to wait three to four years because the legal driving age was raised to either eighteen or twenty one I would wonder why. So should the legal driving age raised? Driving opens up a whole new world for teenagers. Driving let s teenagers understand what the life of adulthood is like and the responsibility behind driving, buying food, getting groceries, getting gas, and so much more. Driving also gives teenagers the responsibility to do things on their own and not rely on their parents if they want to do something. Driving to school is a common theme for high school students especially nowadays. Some high school students don t have access to a school bus and rely on a parent to take them to school. High school student, Shawn Peterson has said he must scramble for a ride to school each morning because his mother works. Shawn Peterson is not the only student who relies on driving to school or getting drove to school and if all of these students now didn t have a car then transportation to school become a major issue in the U.S (Keilman). • 4. Pros And Cons Of Assisted Suicide Debate Paper On the positive side of assisted suicide, it is strongly believed that the right to assisted suicide allows the terminally ill to have a clean and fair death. No one wants to live with pain and sorrow. From their perspective, doctor s help the suffering and terminally ill to die when they choose is nothing wrong. From what they had argued, the First Amendment to the United States Constitution allows people the right to freedom of speech, press, petition, religion. With this logic, it would be reasonable to believe that you are allowed to have the right to die. The right to assisted suicide can help the patients with the terminally ill to release from pain and suffering, reduce the damaging financial effects of hospital care on their families, and preserve the individual right of people to determine their own fate. However, on the negative side of the assisted suicide debate, It is argued that a physician s goal is to help their patient get the proper care and help they need in order to get better and heal; it should not be through killing them. From Procon.org, In Compassion in Dying v. State of Washington, it was stated that physician assisted suicides acts as a slippery slope to those who aren t terminally ill and will take advantage of it. Once we allow assisted suicides, it opens the way to offering it to people who are no longer mentally competent. And then to people who are in distress but not terminally ill. So this is saying that if anyone suffered ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Essay on Asher Lev and The Window Looking Beyond the Glass Could humiliation and pain come from something as simple as a glass in a wooden frame? Throughout the novel, My Name Is Asher Lev by Chiam Potok, much of inner characters are revealed through the symbol of the window. The mother, the father, and Asher all face many struggles and the use of the window helps one to understand them. To begin with, the mother, Rivkeh, is shown a great deal by the window. Potok writes, About an hour after supper, it began to snow heavily. My mother and I stood at the living room window, watching for my father. I hate this, my mother murmured, staring out the window (79 80). This expresses the worry that she has for her husband, Aryeh, and his journey back home. For example, the ... He rubbed the side of his face, I should be there, not here (26 27). This shows how the window is a barrier for his father. Aryeh thinks that he should not be behind it, but instead, out helping people and continuing to travel for the Rebbe. Also in book one, Potok writes, He stood looking through the window at the street outside, quietly singing his father s melody... He held his hands to both sides of his head. Standing there, with the room in shadows and his faintly illumined features reflected in the window that looked out onto the dark street... (15). As well as a barrier, the window also serves as a passage way to the master of the universe. To show the passage way again, Potok says, He was standing in front of the window chanting softly from the Book of Psalms (26). For the father, the window is ultimately a way out of the apartment into the religious world. Many of Asher s characteristics are exposed through the window as well. When Asher is on the train with Jacob Kahn, he sees his reflection in the window. He tells that, I spent the rest of the journey looking at my reflection in that dark window of the ... Legal Liberalism Calls For Equality Legal liberalism calls for equality before the law; it was a manner to ensure that there shall be equality before all citizens, protecting them from unjust statutes or acts the state may incorporate. However, despite the protections in our constitution, there are instances in American history where the Supreme Court has endorsed other branches to violate or limit its citizens economic freedom. In this essay I will cite court cases and documents that incited conflict, most notably substantive due process and liberty of contract. In light of these cases it prompted a massive transformation in constitutional jurisprudence such as Equal protections clause, right to privacy, and criminal defendants rights that moved the nation towards ... They argued that the right was protected under the privileges or immunities clause of the 14th amendment, which had been ratified in 1848. In a 5 4 decision, the supreme Court conflicted with the butchers reasoning. The Supreme Court ruled that the monopoly inflicted by the state did not violate the 13th and 14th amendments (privilege and immunities clause); in other words, the claim did not forbid limits on the rights to use one s property (Lecture). Essentially, the Supreme Court rendered the privileges and immunities clause of the 14th amendment insignificant. In the Field and Bradley dissent, they argue that the purpose of the immunities clause was to limit state action, Bradley went so far as to incorporating the Bill of Rights into the dissent. • 10. Summary Of The Laughing Heart And The Journey Life is full of decision making, and many obstacles that will come in your way to try and stop your path and prevent you from achieving what you must achieve. In the poems A Laughing Heart, by Charles Bukowski, and The Journey, by Mary Oliver, the authors both meet at describing what life is like and how to live life like the fullest, even though there will be things to stop you, and you may stop yourself. Both of these poems point out that you have to be the main character in your life, you have to beat everybody or every obstacle that will trouble you, you must overcome it to achieve the highest points of your life. In The Laughing Heart, the author says and the more often you learn to do it, the more light there will be. (14, 15). Charles Bukowski is saying that if you learn to successfully overcome your obstacles, your life will continually get better because there are less problems to face. A similar line in The Journey, is ...as you left their voices behind,/ the stars began to burn through the sheets of clouds,/ and there was a new voice which you slowly recognized as your own, (24 29). The author is saying that as you started to seize opportunity, solve problems and face challenges in your life, you became stronger, and you became the main character in your life. The theme of these two poems is that your life is your life, and even though you will have to overcome obstacles and face challenges, you must be the main character in your life to live your ... • 11. Arranged Marriage in Bread Givers, by Anzia Yezierska Arranged Marriages have been around since time can remember. An arranged marriage is a marital union between a man and a woman who were selected to be wedded together by a third party. Historically, arrange marriages were the main way to marry. In certain parts of the world, it is still the primary approach. There are two types of arrange marriages. The first is a traditional marriage where the children can, with strong objections, refuse to marry their soon to be spouse. In a forced marriage, the children have no say in the matter. Bread Givers shows an excellent representation of the pressures on children from their parents to be married against their will. The factors of arranged marriages are chiefly superficial. Mr. Smolinsky was in shock when his daughters wanted to marry for love. He asked his wife if they even looked at each other before the engagement and she replied, Maybe if I had the sense of my daughters in America, I would have given you a good look over before the wedding (76). This implies that if she had the choice, she would have married for love or perhaps a different man at least. Dowries are extremely important to consider when it comes to arranged marriages. A dowry is a gift that could be goods, money, or land that a bride s family will give to the groom to marry the bride. Dowries could be used to bring two powerful families together by having their children marry, for example, royal arranged marriages. In the Biblical sense, a girl who is still a virgin is more of prize than one who is not. In a way dowries make the daughter or son feel as property as told by Sara Smolinsky, to [my father] I was nothing but his last unmarried daughter to be bought and sold (205). Mr. Smolinsky stated, It s not enough to take my Bessie without a dowry. You must pay me yet (47). Children and adolescents were regarded as adults and treated as such in court and correction. In the 19th century, a reform took place which aimed at addressing the issue of juveniles being incarcerated in adult jails. A new perception of juveniles surfaced. They were no longer regarded as adults, but instead as persons who have not yet reached adult cognitive and moral development. This new perception has led reformers to create a new system, one that focuses on child and adolescent offenders exclusively and that viewed adolescents and children as more open to rehabilitation. Also in 1960, the U2 incident occurred. The U2 incident gets its name from the U2 spy plane. The U.S would use the spy planes to monitor the Soviet Union. But because of the development of spy satellites, the planes didn t need to be used because the satellites provided more information. Because of these technological advancements, both superpowers were confident that they had the capability to destroy one another with a nuclear attack and also to monitor one another. At that point in time, the Soviet Union and the U.S knew that they could destroy each other and were worried about the fact, so they held each other hostage instead. This ability lead to the creation of Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD). MAD exists when no matter how much damage one side does to the other by using nuclear weapons the victim of the opening attack can launch a devastating retaliatory strike, destroying the state that initiated the ... Representing 95% of all mature bone cells and have the longest lifespan in all bone cells, up to decades, osteocytes are the key to bone integrity1. They are initially derived from osteoblasts, residing within bones and take part in bone metabolism through excessive communication with other bone cell populations, including osteoblasts, osteoclasts and most importantly, osteocyte progenitors. Osteocytes secrete soluble signalling factors that regulate both bone formation and bone dissociation. Osteocytes have a stellate shape, with cell body of around 15 micrometers. Animals, plants, and fungi can all be considered invasive, exotic, or alien species if they are not originally from that habitat. These intruders alter the pathways of native organisms by competitive exclusion, niche displacement, hybridization, introgression predation, and in severe cases extinction (Mooney 2001). Invasive species can severely and adversely affect populations of native species. Foreign organisms can be studied around the globe and dedicated ecologists have the responsibility of studying how these non native species are impacting ecosystems. There are many ways that a species may become introduced into a new ecosystem. Human activity has long played a role in the translocation of many types of plants and animals. Throughout time humans have transported species across land, sea, and sky for recreational purposes, medicinal purposes, and aesthetic purposes. Though the human species is largely responsible for species translocation, we are not the only cause. Abiotic forces like the wind and sea play a large role in transporting various organisms and seeds to new and far lands. Not all introduced species are bad and some have proven to be quite beneficial to new ecosystems. Though there are beneficial introduced species, more tend to hurt existing ecosystems rather than help it. When introduced species exploit a specific species trait or fill a vacant niche in an ... • 37. Dragons In J. R. Tolkien s The Hobbit What does the word dragon mean to us? Generally, if one is asked this question, the response would be unintelligent dangerous weapons of destruction . However, this is not the case in J.R.R Tolkien s The Hobbit , nor is it true for the early mythology of dragons. Instead, this modern definition is replaced with one of, greedy, intelligent beings with human characteristics . Hence, a question arises as to why the image of dragons has been drastically downgraded throughout literature? To answer this question, I will first begin by isolating passages from Tolkien s The Hobbit in an attempt to describe certain features of Smaug the magnificent. Afterwards, I will partake in exemplifying the written style of dragons in the history of literature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Traditional dragons were portrayed when the certain writers have been able to preserve the wonder of the creatures. Whereas, modern dragons are illustrated when select stories have implemented new components that have served as counter productive as depicted by the Harry Potter series which relegates the true plot potential of these beasts. Additionally, these modern dragons tend to be obstacles for the main hero to overcome, which is a stark contrast from the traditional dragons. Therefore, for what reason have writers decided to downgrade the beasts? Unerman (2002) puts forth the belief that fictional evil is more convincing and more frightening when people, not dragons, are the true enemy (pg. 100). In addition, another argument could be made in that dragons such as Smaug will overshadow the main human villain, therefore, by downgrading the beasts to simple plot obstacles, it allows for the dragons not to overshadow the main villain, and I cannot accept either argument. Suggesting that humanity allows for more engaging villains is absurd, considering that the simple task of personifying a dragon in Smaug made for one of the greatest, psychologically complicated, and utmost captivating villain in all of literature. Nonetheless, one may argue that Tolkien s Smaug serves as the same purpose as a dragon in the Harry Potter series; a plot obstacle that cause destruction. Granted that this notion may appear plausible, it proves false in terms of characteristics of the dragons individually. In other words, the dragon in Harry Potter happens to be illustrated as regular animal that features no unique qualities, whereas Smaug is categorized as a complex and unique character, in terms of his motives, intelligence, and the threat he poses to those who dare challenge ...
