The Understanding Of Reading Comprehension
Abstract Reading is the process of constructing meaning through the self motivated interaction
among the reader s knowledge and the material proposed by the written language and the context
of the reading situation. The understanding of reading comprehension is to teach reading to
students acquire reading skills to become independent learners. The strategies of teaching will be
used to help students achieve their reading goals. In areas such as mathematics, developing teacher
content knowledge has been a major concern because it is generally accepted that teachers who
know these subjects are better able to teach them. As teachers, we need to research strategies that
can be used to teach students how to read in every content area. Our focus in this literature review
will be on mathematics and how teachers can find different strategies and activities to use to help
students learn to read and also to use prior knowledge as they implement these strategies.
Keywords: Knowledge Content, comprehension, mathematics Introduction Reading is a natural life
skill, and students must be able to read in order to function in society. Even in our everyday
responsibilities such as working, grocery shopping, driving, banking, and reading the newspaper,
we are required to do some sort of reading. One of the ways in which teachers can help students
improve their reading skills is through strategy instruction (Duke Pearson, 2002). Strategy
instruction involves teaching

Acute Stroke Case Studies
The primary purpose of non enhanced CT in acute stroke is to exclude haemorrhage and
neoplasm and to asses the extent of cerebral ischemia which would render thrombolysis
contraindicated due to the significant risk of doing more harm than good. Once the non enhanced
CT has confirmed absence of these findings thrombolyic agent should be administered to the
acute stroke patient in the radiology department. If the extent of cerebral ischemia extends to
greater than one third of the distribution of middle cerebral artery thrombolysis may be
contraindicated. Time is Brain there should be no delay in reperfusion. 1 2 In Figure 1 above it

Canterbury Tales Essay
Canterbury Tales Wife of Bath is Not an Attack on Women and Married Life
Feminists have proposed that the Prologue of the Wife of Bath is merely an attack on women and
married life. The Prologue is spoken by a woman with strong opinions on how married life should
be conducted, but is written by a man. It is important to examine the purpose with which Chaucer
wrote it. This is especially so as many of the pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales condemn themselves
out of their own mouths, such as the Monk and the Friar. While the Wife spends most of the
Prologue arguing in favour of the deceit and deviousness that wise wives will execute, the argument
is often illogical and can approach ridiculousness in its vehemence. Are we to agree with ... Show

However, the vitality and forcefulness of the Wife forces us to avoid coming to so neat a
conclusion. Dame Alison is frightening and dangerous, true. By the moral codes of society, she has
sinned by committing adultery, and strictly speaking, should not have married so many times.
However, the language that Chaucer has her speak is not that of right and wrong, it is that of
total amorality and self service. The Wife does not pretend to better behaviour, nor does she
accuse anyone else of sinning, and so we cannot accuse her of hypocrisy. In contrast, the Monk and
Friar [good] are clearly the targets of irony, as they do not seem to be aware of the contradictions in
their arguments. The Wife s contradictions are so staggering and frequent: confusing bigamy with
remarriage, using God s commandment to go forth and multiply although she is childless, and
especially, her frank admission that in previous showdowns with her old husbands, al was false that
she accused them of. She is not a hypocrite; on the contrary, she glories in her irrationality and
manipulation of her material. It is difficult, therefore, to see her as being attacked through irony, as
the Monk and Friar are.
The Wife s view of married life as a continual battle for maistrie

Franz Kafka s The Metamorphosis Of My Existence
The Metamorphosis of Franz Kafka
A picture of my existence... would show a useless wooden stake covered in snow... stuck loosely
at a slant in the ground in a ploughed field on the edge of a vast open plain on a dark winter night .
Franz Kafka
The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung 1912), Franz Kafkas best known short story, is a master
work of incredible psychological, sociological and existential malaise. Although his points are
simple and straightforward, this richly layered and textured story is open to many interpreta tions,
making it complex, yet critical to decipher. There is an incredible amount of theories based off of
what this story could possibly symbolize or represent, but it is of the autobiographical in
terpretation that is undeniably the most enlightening. This interpretation allows the reader to gen
uinely understand the tale on an intense level that would not be able to be reached, otherwise. In
order to gain true insight on the autobiographical approach to The Metamorphosis, a brief
examination of his life is required; his thoughts, his beliefs, the acknowledgment of the cruel
circumstances of his life, especially his home life, must be made clear that the anguish of his own
world is the model for the themes in his stories. Born on July 3, 1883, in the Jewish ghetto of
Prague in the Czech Republic, Franz Kafka was the eldest son in his Jewish middle class, German
speaking, family. From the start he was shaping out to be an outsider which was

The French And American Revolutions
The French and American Revolutions were pivotal in setting up new societies. Economic, social,
and political tensions leading up to the revolutions caused citizens to want change in the way their
government worked and functioned within society. Those who wanted the most change within the
government were called the radicals; those who wanted the least amount of change were called the
conservatives (Baradat 19; 24). The amount of change in their government was a part of the
political spectrum which grouped events and people into five groups according to how much
change they wanted. Both of the changes resulting from the two revolutions can be classified
within this political spectrum as well. While the changes in government resulting from... Show more

The British government did not have a formal constitution, but the government was run by two
sections: the monarch, and the parliament. Neither had absolute control as the parliament was able
to curb the power of the monarch and the parliament could not pass any bills or taxes without the
agreement from the monarch. Therefore, the British government had created some checks and
balances so that no one group of government would become omnipotent. An example of this can be
seen in the English Bill of Rights written in 1698 which states, the raising or keeping of a standing
army within time of peace, unless it be with the consent of Parliament, is against the law, (English
Parliament). This shows the Parliament had some power over the monarch. Later on, this idea of
checks and balances would be put into the American government. While the Americans did not
create this idea themselves, they believed in its value to society. Due to tensions between the
American colonists and the British, the colonists wanted to break away and form a government
where their ideas were heard. The primary tension was caused by the problems in the economy.
Britain was left with a lot of debt after the Seven Years War. The colonists were blamed for this
because they were clashing with the Native Americans and the French who had other settlements
further inland a space the American settlers wanted to occupy. Fighting the Natives and the French

Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Research Paper
Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is an extremely rare, deleterious disease caused by a
type of viral pathogen called a coronavirus. The disease first appeared among residents of
southern China, near Hong Kong, in 2002. Over the course of eight months, the disease spread
to up to 8,000 individuals, 10% of which died. As a contagious viral pandemic, SARS diffused
to nearly 30 countries by 2003, including Germany, Canada, and the United States. However, by
2004, all cases of SARS disappeared and have not reappeared anywhere since then. After
considerable research, scientists discovered that the infection was caused by a single stranded
RNA coronavirus. The virus was so named due to the several corona like spikes that were known
to protrude from the molecule. Because SARS suddenly attracted widespread attention when it was
first identified in China in 2002, the virus was classified as an emerging infectious disease.... Show

Symptoms that commonly afflict people with SARS are flu like symptoms such as fever, fatigue,
weakness, chills, muscle ache, and migraine headaches. It is not until after the onset of these
symptoms when the virus begins to attack the respiratory system. Some of the most severe clinical
respiratory symptoms include breathing difficulties, dry coughing, and a sharp reduction of oxygen
levels in the blood. In some instances, the respiratory symptoms of SARS are fatal. After
contracting SARS, people typically develop terminal pneumonia soon thereafter. Because it can be
extremely difficult to breathe, SARS patients usually require a mechanical respirator or some other

Hollywood Rating System
In order for us to stop the constant bombardment of uninspired adaptations, sequels, prequels,
remakes, and reboots we need to create a new rating system, one which doesn t stifle the creativity
of talented filmmakers by slapping their films with arbitrary ratings. This new rating system would
also abolish the supervisory role for movie theaters. The rule that kids must be accompanied by a
parent or adult guardian to an R rated filmis based on the notion that a 14 year old can be shielded
from worrisome material by an 18 year old. This is such a ridiculous concept seeing as we live in
a time where it s unbelievably easy to get access to much more explicit content on the internet than
anything you d find in a standard R rated film. Speaking of, this new rating system would also end

original films. That means being cautious on how we educate about piracy with a younger
demographic since a lot of teenagers and young adults today don t see illegal piracy in quite as
black and white terms as people use to. Instead of lecturing about the legality of piracy, content
creators should instead try to focus on forming a genuine, connected relationship with their
audience. They should also choose to share some of their work with the public free of charge.
Creators who have done this in the past have received plenty of financial support from the
communities that they built. As I mentioned before, piracy is unlikely to go away altogether but
in order for it to be reduced, filmmakers who are opposed to piracy and people who engage in it
need to find common ground and this can be done by the creators understanding their audience s

Laura Mullvey The Male Gaze
Laura Mulvey created the male gaze theory in one of her essay s she wrote in 1975. The theory
suggests that the media such as movies and advertisements were made to grab heterosexual male
s attention and pleasure their perspective of women. She says that women are objectified and that
their bodies are often centered as the attention grabber. The use of slow motion, certain camera
cuts and angels are done in order to make a women s body more admirable as seen from a man s
perspective. From the slideshow source given, it is suggested that male gazing causes hegemonic,
visual pleasure, enforced genderroles, scopophilia, and femaleobjectification.
In the movie Focus, I have seen male gaze occur. The two main characters in the movie Focus are
Will Smith as Nicky and Margot Robbi as Jess. Jess is this beautiful woman that caught the
attention of Nicky by her beauty. During the movie she would always wearing tight clothing and

I do believe that there is the male gaze in the film industry, because I see it so often when women
are being sexually objectified and the center of attention goes to their looks. I could name a list
of movie names that have male gazed . There aren t money movies that concentrate on what a
female character offers intellectually but instead their physical attributes are valued more. I
think the male gaze is problematic because it allows men to continue to objectify women and
only see them as important by the way they look. This also influences women to look at
themselves and other women in a man s point of view. The male gaze also form an unrealistic
view of what women look like and what they should look like. I feel like this effect women s self
esteem and give them the idea that they should aspire to look like these women shown on movies

Analysis Of Storm Warnings By Adrienne Rich
No storm is experienced the same. Seeing a storm on the horizon has the power to stir up gripping
memories, introspective thoughts, and convoluted emotions. The poem Storm Warnings , by
Adrienne Rich, applies a predictable structure paired with flowing syntax, and ambiguous diction
speaking both of weather and emotions to illustrate that one cannot avoid the tribulations of life,
embodied as the approaching storm, but instead prepare for their arrival. Storm Warnings, true to its
literal subject matter, possesses flowy sweeping syntax created by the strategic use of commas and
phrasing to draw parallels between the physical oncoming winds and the gales of life. The author
crafts a long run on sentence that spans the first stanza and carries on into the latter portion of the
second to mirror the continuous flowing of windy weather and the forward motion of life. Once the
speaker notices the brewing storm, they walk from window to closed window, watching boughs
strain against the sky. In this portion of the affromented run on sentence, alliteration, rhythm, and
the repetition of words all contribute to the impression of movement. The various w sounds at the
beginnings of words and the repetition of the word window create a sensation of continuously
flowing forward, especially when read aloud; the comma adds a small swirling pause to the rhythm,
which is then soon after resumed with the word watching. Just as the poem rhythmically moves
forward with its long phrases connected with frequent commas, so must life carry on with each
additional experience, whether it be misfortunes or joys. The elongated syntax allows all these
elements to work together within sentences to highlight the similarities between physical storms
and emotional struggle and to stress the inevitability of predicaments in life.
Despite the flowing syntax, the poem has a clear and predictable structure to replicate the persona s
calm familiarity with experiencing and answering to storms in their life. It is interesting to note that
even though parlous weather is on its way, there is a lack of panic, chaos, and anomalies in the
structure of the poem. There continues to be seven lines in each stanza throughout the piece;

Dropping Of Nagasaki Research Paper
Dropping of the bomb Nagasaki
On August 9th, 1945 at 11:02 A.M., another B 29 bomber, Bock s Car, piloted by Charles
Sweeney was sent by the United States to drop over Nagasaki. The bomb, called Fat Man, was
dropped because of the devastation at Hiroshima being insufficient in persuading the Japanese War
Council to accept Potsdam Conference s demand for unconditional surrender. Planning to drop the
atomic bomb on August 11th, the United States had to push forward the date to August 9th
because of bad weather. At 1:56 A.M., Bock s Car took off, dropping the bomb at 11:02 A.M. at
1650 feet above the city. The equivalent force of the atomic bomb explosion was equal to 22,000
tons of TNT. Although the surrounding hills around Nagasaki contained a good amount of the
destructive force, about 60,000 to 80,000 people were killed. ... Show more content on

communication has come a long way since weighing around 1.1 kg in 1983 to the myriad of
smartphones available in the market today that are lightweight and loaded with endless features.
But it all began towards the 20th century, when telegraph and radio technology were evolving
tremendously. The transatlantic telegraph was built by 1866. An affinity towards wireless
communication was growing for a number of reasons: (i)Increased mobility. (ii)No wiring.
(iii)Remote access. (iv)Innovative solution. (v)Defence strategies. The concept of mobile phones
is based on a very sophisticated radio. Mobile phones have power run transmitters in them. This
power is supplied by a battery. A low power phone requires smaller battery that allows use of hand
held sets, which are not overly bulky. Transmitters convert voice/sound into electrical signals sent

What The Homestead Act Is Through Its Powerpoint Slideshow...
I found a great lesson to work off of for my lesson plan on history of the Homestead Act. The
original lesson was well organized but very short. I chose to focus on Domain 2 Conceptual
Understandings because this lesson plan only had one assessment and I felt that the assessment was
weak in whether a teacher could gage students understanding of the material. This lesson did a
below average job of explaining what the Homestead Actis through its powerpoint slideshow and
worksheet activities. I also didn t like how the lesson plan was designed to show a video clip of
the Western Expansion at the very end of the lecture. I feel that by showing this video is pointless
and students might lose interest by the end of the lesson.
Overall, I agree with the lesson objective but modified it to make it fit my lesson. I also thought
that the opening question was a good way to start a discussion of what the Homestead Act is and
why settlers moved west. I think this question really gets students thinking and is a great segway
to the powerpoint lecture. After the class discussion the lesson plan went right into the the
powerpoint lecture. I think this is a great next step but the powerpoint was very dry and boring.
There is no way a class of 4th graders could sit for 20 minutes listening to the provided
powerpoint. The worksheet packet is a great idea but it did not follow along with the powerpoint
and at points is confusing. I believe if a teacher is going to provide a worksheet packet

Techniques In The Darkling Thrush
The Structure, style and poetic techniques of a poem contribute greatly to the development of the
central idea of a poem. Three poems with central ideas that stood out to me were The Darkling
Thrush by Thomas Hardy, Days by Philip Larkin, and Remembrance by Emily BrontГ«. The
central idea of each of these poems revolve around the idea of time and change. Firstly, I will
discuss how in The Darkling Thrush the simple and traditional structure, the bleak yet
straightforward style and techniques such as vivid imagery and capitalisation combine to develop
the central idea of change. The same can be said for the simple structure and style used in Days
which combine with poetic techniques such as metaphors to develop Larkin s argument against
time and change. Finally I will discuss how the idea of time is developed through techniques such
as vivid imagery and symbolism in Remembrance along with changing styles and a slow, consistent
rhythm.
The Darkling Thrush is a poem written by Thomas Hardy that explores the regular life changes a
person must endure throughout their lifetime. The structure of the poem is very traditional and
simple. It starts off with a structure of ABABCDCD and repeats this structure for the next three
stanzas. Perhaps Hardy thought that a jagged rhyme scheme or untraditional ... Show more content

Athenian Imperialism and her Changing Relations with Allies
Nature of Athenian Imperialism
Changing Relations with Allies
Lars Hoogvliet
After the conclusion of the Persian Wars (492 479BC) with Athens being the true victor, and before
the Peloponnesian War, a period of prosperity covered Athens, and they needed to devise new ways
to protect themselves and expand their wealth, and how this would affect their relations with allies.
The Athenians and their Allies was an organisation led by the Athenians in the 5th century, but is
now referred to as the Delian League or the Confederacy of Athens.
The official aim of the League was, according to Thucydides, to compensate themselves for their
losses [of the Persian War] by ravaging the territory of the King of Persia. The long term aim of...

The besiegement of Thasos revealed Athens true motivations behind the League and the future
plans for her allies. According to _Ancient Greece Using Sources_ Thasos was one of the largest
and richest members of the Delian League, and a conflict broke out between Athens and Thasos
over the gold mining on the island. Thasos then attempted to withdraw from the League, as the
Persians were no longer a threat in the Aegean, and Athens was demanding too much for too little in
return.
The League, under the control of Cimon, then besieged Thasos for two years, and destroyed their
city walls, confiscated their navy, closed their mint and annexed their possessions on the mainland.
According to Thucydides, the period from the revolt of Thasos to the ostracism of Cimon (465
461BC) was the time when the main friction between Sparta and Athens occurred and eventually
led to their war.
If Sparta really was willing to attack Athens, an apparent ally, then their relationship must have
been weak and forced. Was Sparta jealous of Athens wealth and power? Did they feel threatened by
the Athenians sudden harshness against their own allies ? Or it could have been a combination of
reasons. Thucydides didn t help either when his pro Athenian feelings got the better of him, this
was a time when Sparta was particularly friendly to Athens because of the courage displayed by
Athens against the Persians.

(in adults) with the total body fat content.
A body mass index of less than 20 is considered to be underweight, while a body mass index
between 20 and 25 is considered healthy. A body mass index in the range of 25 to 30 is regarded as
overweight. A body mass index over 30 is regarded as obese. A body mass index of 100 or greater
is regarded as morbidly obese. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Blue Man Group Essay
The off the wall antics and odd, but entertaining music style of the Blue Man Group has brought
them to be one of the most popular and successful theater groups in the world today.
The Blue Man Group came into play in 1987. Creators Matt Goldman, a software producer, Chris
Wink, and Phil Stanton, both working as waiters, say the Blue Man Group started as a weekend
get together in which they would invite their friends over and talk about art, science, and whatever
else interested them. The three saw their home city of New York to be a cultural wasteland. We
heard about this art world thing happening, but you d go and look, and it was like you were

To fully understand the Blue Man Group, one must come to understand the Blue Man himself.
The character is dressed in all black and painted a special shade of blue created exclusively for
the group but, this is only a very small part of the true Blue Man. The character is very complex.
He is part philosopher, part clown, and part teacher. The three blue men take the audience through a
journey of complex ideas, concepts, and contradictions of life. One finds out how the Blue Man
perceives being human. The blue men have a great amount of positive energy and are very
welcoming but, the character does not speak in the way one may think. The blue men communicate
through their eyes and bodily expressions. The character stands for the human spirit, even though
he has the emotional range of Mr. Spock on a particularly self controlled day (Richheimer, 2). The
character is timid, but passionate. The group worked to create a slightly strange but not frightening
character, one that was loveable but not boring.
We decided early on that he wouldn t have much facial expression, that he wasn t going to emote.
But at the same time it was important that we impart Blue Man s love and spiritual core. We try to
do it through our eyes. The small portals of emotion, and we try to keep the rest of the face
impassive (Richheimer, 2).
When asked Why blue? , Wink replied,
Blue just felt right from the start. But after we started performing, people began pointing

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Analysis
If you re a human who s ever been bored, you ve probably taken a Buzzfeed quiz. If not, you re

Which Disney princess are you? to Will your choice of bread reveal how lonely you are? But let
s be real. Do these tests actually tell you anything? Most likely, the results are similar to a weekly
horoscope just vague enough to apply to almost anyone. However, if there was a quiz that could
analyze your personality and make well researched predictions about your future, would you take it?
The Myers Briggs Type IndicatorВ®, MBTIВ®, is said to do exactly that. According to opp.com,
the questionnaire was developed by Katherine Briggs and Isabel Myers, mother and daughter

Students, particularly those looking to choose a career path, could benefit from taking this quiz. It

Although this test is interesting, what everyone must realize is that people are way more complex

Reality and Illusion
Postmodern literature draws attention to its status as fictional to break down barriers between
reality and illusion. The boundaries between real and fake are no longer clear, because identity is
socially constructed. In White Noise and Nights at the Circus, characters such as Sophie Fevvers
and Jack Gladney have fabricated personas, and they exaggerate these roles so that their audiences
cannot tell the difference between what the characters perform and their true nature. There are
many Matryoshka principles in Nights at the Circus, adding many layers of fictionto the story. This
emphasizes the constructed identities of the characters by the authors and the characters
themselves. This essay will examine how performance, mise en abyme, fabulation, and hyperreality
all indicate how identity is constructed. In Nights at the Circusand White Noise, the audience is not
supposed to be able to tell whether the characters are performing a certain role. Instead, they tend
to step into a role, as if this is their true nature, but they know what is adorned. In Nights at the
Circus, when Walser meets Fevvers, he runs through diverse processes of belief and disbelief as
he talks to and observes her. When he is watching her on the trapeze, he starts as quite rational, he
whimsically reasoned with her status as a winged woman and analyzes her anatomy in a scientific
manner comparable to Darwinism by all the laws of evolution and human reason . He represents the

Good Country People by Flannery O Connor
Flannery O Connor was a southern belle born in Savannah, Georgia in 1925. She was a Catholic
girl living in the Bible belt of the country. She lived in two different worlds (Meyer, 421); the
fictional world that she created for her stories and her personal life. In her stories, she used
exciting characters so that she could live through them and live an interesting life. She uses her
stories to portray totally unanticipated, but totally plausible things. O Connor s stories present
complex experiences that cannot be tidily summarized; it takes the entire story to suggest the
meanings (Meyer, 426). She uses her characters to show irony, private experiences, fears, and
diverse parallels into her story Good Country People . One of the strongest parallels that I saw in
the story was between O Connor and the character Joy. She was the main protagonist of the
story, written as an unpleasant and lonely woman who has moved home to wait for her
imminent death. O Connor s life was much like Joy s life in many ways. Joy was a young girl in
her thirties, who had to move home because she had a weak heart which kept her from her the
life that she desired. She was not able to teach at a university using her degree in philosophy. She
lived at her childhood home in the country with her mother, reading books all day, every day. O
Connor, who also had to move home because she was getting sick with lupus, could not follow her
life dreams. Lupus can sometimes be confused with a heart

Temporal Trends and Geographic Patterns of Teen Suicide in Alaska, written by Bradford D.
Gessner, reported the findings of a study on teen suicide rates in Alaska. Using death certificates and
U.S. census data to record trends in suicide rates among Alaskan teens ages 14 19, it was found
that the teen suicide rate was 31.5 per 100,000 persons each year. The study tested three
hypotheses, the first being that the overall suicide rate of Alaska teens ages 14 19 during 1979

Gessner used correlational research (directly stated) in his study, as he examined the effect of
different variables. For example, the two variables teen suicide and gender were found to
covary together. Besides determining suicide rates by census area, the correlation was
determined between these rates and several census area level demographic variables.
Correlational research involves chi square and linear regression tests univariate, multivariate, and
square root transformation all of which were used in this study. Risk ratios and Taylor series 95%
CIs as well as chisquare tests for trend were calculated using Epi Info computer software (Dean,
Dean, Burton et al., 1995). Linear regression analyses were conducted with SPSS (Norusis, 1993).
Descriptive research was also employed in this study, as it involved the use of many statistics (e.g.,
suicide rate, number of Alaska teens ages 14 19.) Obtaining information about the current status of
various phenomena allows one to describe what exists with

Historical Critique on The Canterbury Tales The Canterbury Tales by Geoffrey Chaucer is one of

Summary Of Zooman And The Sign
Since the rise of storytelling, one of the most important themes has been the conflict between
good and evil. Often, a person s role in society helped the audience understand what side they
were on. Princes, kings, knights, these were the good characters. Tax collectors, witches, and
other villains were quite obviously evil. In modern times, we consider law enforcement officers
to be on the side of good. However, whenever a character who clearly belongs to one side or the
other makes an appearance, we expect them to do something. Witches don t just pass through
town, they throw fireballs and put curses on people. Knights don t simply gallop by, they stop
and rescue damsels in distress. If a character who clearly belongs to one side or the other appears

It argues that the police are not simply incompetent, but even apathetic to the problems of the
community they have sworn to protect and serve. This is evidenced in that, while investigating
the murder of a young girl, the police go door to door a single time canvassing for witnesses.
When everyone claims that they didn t see anything, the police move on. The play suggests that
this, along with picking up the usual black suspects for questioning, is about the extent of their
investigation. The police don t appear to spend much time gathering evidence from the scene.
They don t come back to see if anyone has remembered anything since the shock wore off. In
fact, they seem to be trying to avoid the scene of the crime. Zooman himself calls the police

Man Against Nature In Jack London s To Build A Fire
Man against Nature: A Look Into To Build a Fire by Jack London
Introduction
The human being has in most instances tried to outdo nature through creativity and innovation.
Man s fight against nature is endlessly continuous and determined. It is of great significance that
man understands that this competition with nature in the face of such overwhelming odds is
insignificant. A clear cut example of this unproductive struggle is a story by Jack London, To Build
a Fire whereby he uses man versus nature to support his primary theme that our struggle against
nature is vastly unequal one that leaves little or no margin for error (London, 25).
To prove this theme Jack London, in his book puts a man in an environment he is unfamiliar with.

than 70 below. It was 75 below zero. Because the freezing point is 32 above zero, it meant that
there were 107 degrees of frost , the extreme temperatures that led to the death of the man. The
man also despite the warning of the likely dangers of such cold weather, he had his argument. He
in his mind stated, All a man had to do was to keep his head, and he was all right (London, 71).
Any man who was a man could travel alone. In this instance, the man backing on his intellect and
reasoning power to overcome nature. The fact that he is unable to overcome the adverse weather
conditions at his disposal is an indication of why man cannot outwit nature. Despite his knowledge
and reasoning ability, the man is trapped, and even his attempts to light a fire to warm himself are
thwarted by the same nature. He freezes to the point that he cannot do anything.
The dog in the story is seen to be much concerned and worried about the weather than the man
who can think and make decisions. London says, But the animal sensed the danger. Its fear made
it questions eagerly every movement of the man as if expecting him to go into camp or to seek

The Power of the Moral Ideal in The Fountainhead Essay
The Power of the Moral Ideal in The Fountainhead
The Fountainhead is a novel of gigantic proportions. It deals with great talent and great mediocrity,
with great love and great hatred, with great ambition and equally great complacence. It
unpretentiously chooses to steer clear of the much hyped common man, with his commonplace
dreams and aspirations.
The theme of The Fountainhead can be summarized in the famous line by the author man s ego is
the fountainhead of human progress . The novel exalts egotism, which is generally looked upon in
our world with great dislike. The protagonist, Howard Roark, is a man used by the author to

Roark is a man who lives up to the word man . He believes that man alone has power over
himself He does not believe in God or in destiny, simple because he doesn t need to. In order to be
truly great a man must be physically, mentally and spiritually be involved in his work, the way
Roark was. Roark treats his work with the respect and reverence that other men lavish over God. To
him, insincerity towards one s work is the worst blasphemy possible. This is the line of thought that
runs throughout the novel.
The hallmark of Roark is work is his complete irreverence for all precedents, traditions and
conventions. His ideas are too revolutionary to be accepted, but he refuses, at any point of time to
compromise with his ideals, no matter what his compulsions may be. He is a man of such immense
integrity, that he would rather break stones in a quarry than make a substandard building. which is
what the world demands of him.
The reason why some people seek to destroy Howard Roark is that his very presence evokes an
unreasonable fear in their hearts. This quest to destroy the genius within him started from the very

Genocide In The Armenian Genocide
At the beginning of the fourth century Armenia transitioned from being an independent country, to
a part of the Ottoman Empire. The Armenians were Christian, unlike the Turks, who were Muslim.
This led to unequal treatment of Armenians. For example, they had to pay higher taxes, yet had
fewer political and legal rights. However, Armenians were very successful in the Ottoman Empire,
which is another reason they were treated badly. They also were thought of as traitors because they
might join the Russians in the war since they are also Christians. These were some of the reasons
why the massacres began. Other reasons include the start of WW1 which allowed them to hide the
massacres from the outside word, and made Turk suspicious of Armenians loyalty. Also the new
government called the Young Turks saw the Armenians as a threat to the new state. The massacres
that took place in the Ottoman Empire between 1914 1918 exhibited the ninth and tenth Stages of

Analysis Of The Play Macbeth

Macbeth
There are many conflicts found in the play Macbeth by Shakespeare both external and internal.
There is man vs. society, man vs. self, man vs. man, and even man vs. supernatural. In my opinion, I
believe that the central conflict in Macbeth s plot is man vs. self, an internal conflict. This internal
conflict begins when Macbeth overhears the three witch sisters, also known as the Weird Sisters,
making a prediction that one day he will be become King and rule. From this point on in the
play, he (Macbeth) is conflicted about murdering Duncan, King of Scotland, in order to gain
power. Macbeth starts of the play as a good, honest warrior and the well trusted captain of King
Duncan. Macbeth begins to experience the conflict of man vs self because of his wise to become
king (as well as his trust in the witches prediction) which directly goes against his loyalty to King
Duncan. Even though he goes through internal conflicts with himself over committing this crime
many times his ambition wins, and he becomes a killer. His conscience seems to overcome
everything else by the end, and this is also true for other characters in the play. This ambition
combined with guilt creates a man vs self conflict all throughout the play. Ambition has severe
consequences as seen when Macbeth is slain and branded a tyrant. Shakespeare does not give his
character the chance to enjoy what he has done as a way possibly to imply that it is more

Why Is Canada A Mixed Economy
The United States debt is over thirty times higher than that of Canada, which may be explained by
the fact that the two countries have different types of economies. Currently, the United States

history of these two countries, there have been many ups and downs, however the United States
debt is currently rising at a very high and constant rate. Many countries all over the world are
currently using a mixed economy and there is many obvious reasons why. For each economy type

bodies. If our bodies loose too much water we become dehydrated. During exercise, our bodies
sweat out a lot of the water in our bodies. Too much water loss can lead to dehydration, which can
potentially decrease the athletic performance, physically and mentally and lead to serious injury
and illness (1). Will hydrating before exercise really improve athletic performance? Discussion
Hydration is very important and plays a major role in athletic performance, both the physical and
mental (4). In order to function at peak performance our bodies must have sufficient amounts of
water in order to work properly.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A person becomes dehydrated when the fluid loss in their body exceeds two percent of that
person s body weight (2). Even the lowest level of dehydration can have major effects on athletic
performance; a loss of just two percent body loss can lead to a reduction in performance by ten to
twenty percent (6). Dehydration greater then three percent of body weight extremely disturbs
physiological function, and increases that risk for heat related illness (1). If you are going to let
your body become dehydrated while working out, there will be more harm then good that comes
from it, and it would defeat the purpose of working out in the first place. Dehydration impairs
training quality and also increases stress levels in that individual

WE WERE SOLDIERS
It s a known fact that that the Vietnam War was fought by young American soldiers that bled and
died next to one another in the jungles of Vietnam. With many wins and loses throughout the war
there were over 58,000 American casualties by wars end. The movie, We Were Soldiers focuses on
the role of the United State s 7th Calvary Regiment in the Battle of Ia Drang, which was the first
large unit battle of the Vietnam War. Lt. Col. Hal Moore commanded the 7th Calvary Regiment
that landed a helicopter in an area named X Ray located in the Ia Drang Valley of Vietnam. LT.

The production team also made sure the weapons and vehicles were historically correct as well.
To me, those are two of the things I would notice when it comes to viewing historically re
enacted war movies. I have seen too many movies where the weapons or vehicles that are from
the wrong era ruin the movie and therefore destroying its historic value. However, in this movie,
the production team hired a company called Cinema Weaponry who furnished and restored
some 250 weapons for the Air Calvary soldiers including M 79 40mm grenade launchers, M 60
machine guns, 45 calibur pistols and M 16E1 assault rifles. The Vietnamese used anything from
French and Russian surplus rifles including the MAT 49 submachine gun and PPS 43 rifles. Since
few actual AK 47 were around, they made custom replicas of the Ak 47s. Over all, the costume
and prop departments for this movie did an extraordinary job to simulate and recreate the Battle of
Ia Drang in 1965.
One of the few differences I could find that historically never happened in the real Battle of the Ia
Drang, but happened in the final battle scene of the film, was Lt. Col. Moore s bayonet charge into
the oncoming North Vietnamese. According to the book, We Were

Inclusion Essay
I am extremely in favor of inclusion of students with disabilities. Inclusion can be defined as an
option in which the education of a child is taken into consideration. For example, it involves the
students with disabilities pursuing most or all of their education within an ordinary school setting
with their other classmates that do not have disabilities. Inclusionhas many objectives, but the most
important objective of inclusion would definitely have to be in that it is a program that supports
children with special needs having equal educational conditions. Inclusion attempts to accomplish
this by giving those students various resources that will help them succeed in school, such as
greater access to the general educationcurriculum.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Students with disabilities should feel that they belong in the classroom. They should not feel like if
the school and teachers are doing them a favor by letting them be in the regular classrooms. They
should feel like they belong there. I agree with the two initiatives that were started in 2002 and
2004. They are The No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) and the Disabilities Education Improvement
Act (IDEA). Thanks to the start of those two initiatives many students with disabilities have
positively benefited. Those initiatives have enable them to receive the majority of their instruction
in a general education setting. There has been a trend that researchers have noticed that is
occurring. In the last ten years, there has been an increase in educating the students with disabilities
in the general education settings. There has also been a trend in the teachers being prepared to
work with all types of students (McCray, 2011). From what I have learned from the teacher
preparation program in my university, I feel slightly prepared to work with students with
disabilities. I have learned many things such as different methods to accommodate those students
with disabilities. In the various courses, I have learned many important techniques to help students
with disabilities. For example, I have learned that I need to try various alternatives such as

Common Childhood Diseases Essay
Common Childhood Diseases
1.1 Introduction
Children are more prone to diseases. They catch disease easily and recover fast too. You must
learn to protect your children from diseases and also from many other problems which can be
prevented, if you care a little.
In this lesson, you will learn about some diseases which are more likely to affect a child in the first
few years of life.

availability of the vaccine and ability of the person to pay.
As you can see, immunisation for certain diseases is given in more than one dose, spread over a
few months. Each one of these doses is essential for complete protection. The second dose is
called the booster dose . Remember, if at any stage you miss out on even one dose, the
immunisation will not be effective and will have to be started all over again.
Immediately after the child has been immunised, you may find that the child has mild fever.
However, there is no reason to worry as the fever will not last longer than a day or two.

Ho How The Other Half Lives Summary
Riis, Jacob How the Other Half Lives New York: Charles Scribner s Sons, 1890. In 1890, Jacob
Riis, a Danish immigrant worked as a police reporter and photographic journalist in New York
City. How the Other Half Lives, prompted legislative reforms, focused attention on the desperate
lives of poor urban immigrants and left an enduring mark on the history of documentary
photography. (NY TIMES). During this time, America was going through social and economic
stress due to rapid industrialization. It was a time full of greed and neglect from the wealthier
class leaving the middle and poor class helpless and suffering day to day. Jacob Riis used his
photography to document real lives that were being affected by this crisis and presented these
photos to the public to open their eyes to what was going on. The economy, society, and
government started to be controlled by large corporations who were owned by immigrants filled
with greed and materialism. With this industrialization, Riis documented the over worked lower
class who were given low wages and placed in overpriced slums. The real world did not notice the
truth behind this madness until Riis s photography opened their eyes.... Show more content on

Disadvantages Of Mobile Technology
Mobile technology gives people the power to build community and bring the world closer
together, as we can connect our loved ones far and near. Regardless of where one resides,
communication and strong community can be possible with the help of mobile technology.
When I came to the United States back in 2012, I was homesick. There was not a lot that I could
do to connect with my friends and relatives back home, other than send them texts or call them.
Now, with more advanced technology that I am exposed to, I can video call on Facebook
Messenger. I have been video calling my friends and relatives back home since 2013. Although
we are living different lives, with the help of the Facebook Messenger, we are able to share our
experience with one another. I am used to this feature, and I cannot imagine myself losing touch
with my friends and relatives back home, as I learn from their experiences just as I tell them
about mine. The reason I have not gone back home since 2012, is because of Facebook s video
calling feature. I did not feel a need to go see my friends and relatives because I was able to see
them through video calling. When I video call, I am usually with my friends. That way I am able
to connect my Indian friends with my American friends and form community between the two.
With the help of mobile technology, we are able to build community across a broader area. When
some crisis happens, the public is made aware of it through social media. Due to this awareness, we

Comparing Le Bonheur And St. Jude Children s Hospital
In order to be a volunteer, one must first realize that volunteering is a serious matter. The work put
in is supposed to be for the benefit of others, not the volunteer. Therefore, it is important that, when
choosing an organization for which to volunteer, each and every option is considered. Many
nonprofit organizations such as the Red Cross, the Susan G. Komen foundation, and St. Jude
Children s Hospital are all highly regarded options to consider. Le
Bonheur Children s Hospital, however, was the organization I was attracted to for more reasons
than one. By choosing to volunteer at Le Bonheur, a nonprofit children s hospital, I have
experienced miracles and benefited greatly from my contributions.

This generosity is Le Bonheur s primary foundation, so for more than 50 years, children from
around the world have received exceptional care at Le Bonheur Children s Hospital, said Alan
Graf, the executive vice president and CFO of FedEx Corp., which makes donations to Le
Bonheur to provide housing for the families of patients (Le Bonheur). All of this is only one of
many reasons why Le
Bonheur is well worth any volunteer s time. Furthermore, Le Bonheur does not require volunteers
to have any particular skills or training in order to be eligible for a position.
My experience as a volunteer for Le Bonheur includes painting faces at Blue Springs, working a
silent auction for the Family Affairs Fundraiser, and helping work Le Bonheur s annual Walmart
Day. For some activities, I volunteered only a few hours of my time; however, others, such as
Walmart Day, required nearly eight hours. Time should not be an issue as long as he or she have
some to give. Le Bonheur does, however, have certain traits they expect their volunteers to have,
though they are not exactly the kind that can be taught. Katrina Patty is a perfect example of these
traits. She is a volunteer for not one, but multiple

The Pros And Cons Of Age Discrimination
To critically and comprehensively address this case, it is convincingly important to assess the laws
that forbids age discrimination and wrongful termination in workplace. Under the law, age
discrimination can involve treating an employee or applicant less favorably because of her or his
age. In accordance to the Age Discriminationin Employment Act, it is unlawful to discriminate an
employee on basis their age. The law is categorically clear that an employer not discriminate
individuals who are 40 years old and above (Walsh, 2013). It should be noted that the Act provide
for protection for the people/workers below 40 years. However, some states in the United States
have laws in place that protect young employees against age discrimination. It is unlawful or illegal
for employers or any other entity to consider hiring/favoring an older worker over the younger one.
This withstands even if both employees are 40 and above. The law strongly prohibits age
discrimination in any aspect of employment including firing, hiring, pay, promotions, job
assignments, trainings, layoffs, benefits, and any other condition or term of employment.
The law also strongly (and word strongly should be emphasized here) prohibits against harassment
of a worker basing on her or his age. Harassment can range from derogatory or offensive remarks
about an individual age to promotion denial. Nevertheless, the law does not prohibit offhand
comments, simple teasing, isolated incidents that are not serious.

Norse Mythology Vs Greek Mythology
Everyone loves stories, we love to go into another s perspective and see their world and what
they believe in, and stories from Greek and Mesopotamian are ones to hear. They believed in the
gods that lived in heaven and they used them to explain some of the unexplainable things in life,
using stories and background to explain why things happen.in all these stories there is something
different between the Norse Myths and the Greek Myths. If you step back and look at the whole,
you can see the difference between the character s personalities and their morality. After reading
many of stories from each collection I see that Norse Mythology has higher morals than Greek
Mythology because Norse Mythology recognizes an individual s choices and the advantages of
choosing right over wrong, they can also recognize the importance... Show more content on

Cyber Security, By Mark Rasch
The ISSA conference was very enlightening and interesting. Mark Rasch introduced cyber security
to us from a very different perspective that I haven t had anyone explore before. To some extent it
clears and clarifies some of the decisions that have been taken resulting in the many different cases
that I have read in the news regarding cyber security. The closest example that comes to mind is
the Snowden case in regards to privacy and security laws.
In addition to that, I concur with Mark regarding the laws that are stated that in terms of privacy
are not as transparent and certain loopholes change the way these laws can have effect upon an
individual, organization or an employee. As per what I understood from his initial remarks about
lawmaking from his early work experience.
The scenarios that Mark jumped into, being that conference a room of senior officials who have all
the authority and power that they need to take certain kinds of decisions that will change things
beyond our borders. It was an on the spot exercise that actually made me think harder and allowed
me to grasp better the basic knowledge and understanding of cyber security that I have gained
throughout this semester.

You re told the level s unfinished and you re asked to complete the level for your tutorial.
Silhouettes of where to place enemies and blocks are strewn about, and you re walked through

Mutations In MSX1 Case Study
Mutations in MSX1 gene cause a verity of diseases. Mutations hit different sites on msx1 that
resulted in different phenotypes. It has been identified some mutations locations such as in frame

some of these mutations disturb the homeodomain and some don t but located in N terminus

Another type is oligodontia, which is six or more, represented by 0.1%. They analyzed three

at 7bp instead of the normal splicing site which is the exon 2, resulting a C terminal truncated gene

Another study conducted in Japan family with non syndromic tooth agenesis. The authors
identified a novel frameshift mutation by using mice with CRISPR/Cas system. The mutation
occurred in a highly conserved C terminal domain of MSX1, (MH6). Homozygous mice at E16.5

agenesis of the upper third molars and the lower second and third molars. Besides, the upper second
molars were small (12). Furthermore, a study involved six Japanese families with non syndromic
tooth agenesis. There was a novel nonsense mutation in exon 1 in a family with oligodontia. This
mutation made a termination codon in the first exon, which led to truncated W139X at the C

The Fight For The Survival Of The Fatherland
Life was different, you have to understand, the choices I made, they were because I had to, for
the survival of the Nation. People do not seem to understand that, the fight for the survival of the
fatherland, the idea is lost among people nowadays. There was a pressure amongst everyone,
inbred in our bones, the need to fit in, to join the Party, if you refused...you could not refuse.
Change became a constant that was always drastic. You did not make your own decisions
anymore, I remember that even as a young boy, my decisions were all made for me, in the name
of the National Socialist Party, in the name of our Fuhrer. My father made the choices for me
when I was young. For that, I blame what I became on him, for the path he led me down, but my
actions, they were my own, forced upon me like a pawn in a larger game than life, but still my
own. My father was a cold man, his love was for his country and his job. He was the kind of man
that looked for an excuse to use his belt, I remember the thrashing I would receive as a child... I
feared him, and for that, he earned my respect. My father was a large supporter of the Regime,
having worked as an officer for several years he rose quickly through relations with Reinhard
Heydrich. I remember many nights when he and father would drink and smoke cigars in the study.
He moved quickly by greasing hands and soon I remember that we moved from our small house
into a much larger one, closer to my father s new office. That is when the

Animal Vivisection
Live animal dissection have been recorded in ancient Greek writings from as early as 500 BC.
Vivisection (dissection of living organisms) was first practiced on humans in ancient Rome, but it
was soon prohibited and thus the need for animal subjects.
During the early stages of animal testing, Many philosophers debated on animal vivisection,
Aristotle argued that animals lacked intelligence, and so the meaning of right and wrong had no
meaning to them. Theophrastus, Aristotle s successor, disagreed and objected to the vivisection of
animals on the idea that like humans, they can feel pain, and causing pain to animals was an insult
to the gods. Descartes knew that animals could feel, but lacked a conscious, thus he argued that
they were unable to consciously experience those feelings. Many others believed that animals were
automata and that the way they experience pain and feelings is not the same as humans. Not until
animals as pets were becoming more common did people start to really question the morality of
animal vivisections, and thus, the birth of animal rights groups started popping up in 19th century
England.
Theodora Capaldo is president of the New England Anti Vivisection Society(NEAVS). An animal
rights organization with a goal to end the use of animals in research, testing and science. NEAVS is
dedicated to giving outreach and education for helping replace animals with more modern
alternatives that are more efficient, ethical and humane. In Capaldo s article

Trauma And Secondary Trauma
Trauma is an experience copious amounts of people have encountered or will encounter within their
lifetime. As many think about various traumatic experiences, one may think solely of victims of the
trauma. As we think of the victims of traumatic experience, it is easy for the general public
population to overlook the professionals who respond to traumatic incidents such as natural
disasters, accidents, and intentional acts of harm or terror are not always brought to mind.
According to the Wisconsin EMS Association statistics provided on their website, during the year
2011, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) reported to 598,416 emergency calls. Just in the state of
Wisconsin, EMS workers as a whole were exposed to thousands of potentially traumatizing
incidences. Exploring the impacts of trauma and different treatments for workers who are impacted

  • 2. The Understanding Of Reading Comprehension Abstract Reading is the process of constructing meaning through the self motivated interaction among the reader s knowledge and the material proposed by the written language and the context of the reading situation. The understanding of reading comprehension is to teach reading to students acquire reading skills to become independent learners. The strategies of teaching will be used to help students achieve their reading goals. In areas such as mathematics, developing teacher content knowledge has been a major concern because it is generally accepted that teachers who know these subjects are better able to teach them. As teachers, we need to research strategies that can be used to teach students how to read in every content area. Our focus in this literature review will be on mathematics and how teachers can find different strategies and activities to use to help students learn to read and also to use prior knowledge as they implement these strategies. Keywords: Knowledge Content, comprehension, mathematics Introduction Reading is a natural life skill, and students must be able to read in order to function in society. Even in our everyday responsibilities such as working, grocery shopping, driving, banking, and reading the newspaper, we are required to do some sort of reading. One of the ways in which teachers can help students improve their reading skills is through strategy instruction (Duke Pearson, 2002). Strategy instruction involves teaching ... Acute Stroke Case Studies The primary purpose of non enhanced CT in acute stroke is to exclude haemorrhage and neoplasm and to asses the extent of cerebral ischemia which would render thrombolysis contraindicated due to the significant risk of doing more harm than good. Once the non enhanced CT has confirmed absence of these findings thrombolyic agent should be administered to the acute stroke patient in the radiology department. If the extent of cerebral ischemia extends to greater than one third of the distribution of middle cerebral artery thrombolysis may be contraindicated. • 4. Canterbury Tales Essay Canterbury Tales Wife of Bath is Not an Attack on Women and Married Life Feminists have proposed that the Prologue of the Wife of Bath is merely an attack on women and married life. The Prologue is spoken by a woman with strong opinions on how married life should be conducted, but is written by a man. It is important to examine the purpose with which Chaucer wrote it. This is especially so as many of the pilgrims in The Canterbury Tales condemn themselves out of their own mouths, such as the Monk and the Friar. While the Wife spends most of the Prologue arguing in favour of the deceit and deviousness that wise wives will execute, the argument is often illogical and can approach ridiculousness in its vehemence. Are we to agree with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, the vitality and forcefulness of the Wife forces us to avoid coming to so neat a conclusion. Dame Alison is frightening and dangerous, true. By the moral codes of society, she has sinned by committing adultery, and strictly speaking, should not have married so many times. However, the language that Chaucer has her speak is not that of right and wrong, it is that of total amorality and self service. The Wife does not pretend to better behaviour, nor does she accuse anyone else of sinning, and so we cannot accuse her of hypocrisy. In contrast, the Monk and Friar [good] are clearly the targets of irony, as they do not seem to be aware of the contradictions in their arguments. The Wife s contradictions are so staggering and frequent: confusing bigamy with remarriage, using God s commandment to go forth and multiply although she is childless, and especially, her frank admission that in previous showdowns with her old husbands, al was false that she accused them of. She is not a hypocrite; on the contrary, she glories in her irrationality and manipulation of her material. It is difficult, therefore, to see her as being attacked through irony, as the Monk and Friar are. The Wife s view of married life as a continual battle for maistrie ... • 5. Franz Kafka s The Metamorphosis Of My Existence The Metamorphosis of Franz Kafka A picture of my existence... would show a useless wooden stake covered in snow... stuck loosely at a slant in the ground in a ploughed field on the edge of a vast open plain on a dark winter night . Franz Kafka The Metamorphosis (Die Verwandlung 1912), Franz Kafkas best known short story, is a master work of incredible psychological, sociological and existential malaise. Although his points are simple and straightforward, this richly layered and textured story is open to many interpreta tions, making it complex, yet critical to decipher. There is an incredible amount of theories based off of what this story could possibly symbolize or represent, but it is of the autobiographical in terpretation that is undeniably the most enlightening. This interpretation allows the reader to gen uinely understand the tale on an intense level that would not be able to be reached, otherwise. In order to gain true insight on the autobiographical approach to The Metamorphosis, a brief examination of his life is required; his thoughts, his beliefs, the acknowledgment of the cruel circumstances of his life, especially his home life, must be made clear that the anguish of his own world is the model for the themes in his stories. Born on July 3, 1883, in the Jewish ghetto of Prague in the Czech Republic, Franz Kafka was the eldest son in his Jewish middle class, German speaking, family. From the start he was shaping out to be an outsider which was ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. The French And American Revolutions The French and American Revolutions were pivotal in setting up new societies. Economic, social, and political tensions leading up to the revolutions caused citizens to want change in the way their government worked and functioned within society. Those who wanted the most change within the government were called the radicals; those who wanted the least amount of change were called the conservatives (Baradat 19; 24). The amount of change in their government was a part of the political spectrum which grouped events and people into five groups according to how much change they wanted. Both of the changes resulting from the two revolutions can be classified within this political spectrum as well. While the changes in government resulting from... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The British government did not have a formal constitution, but the government was run by two sections: the monarch, and the parliament. Neither had absolute control as the parliament was able to curb the power of the monarch and the parliament could not pass any bills or taxes without the agreement from the monarch. Therefore, the British government had created some checks and balances so that no one group of government would become omnipotent. An example of this can be seen in the English Bill of Rights written in 1698 which states, the raising or keeping of a standing army within time of peace, unless it be with the consent of Parliament, is against the law, (English Parliament). This shows the Parliament had some power over the monarch. Later on, this idea of checks and balances would be put into the American government. While the Americans did not create this idea themselves, they believed in its value to society. Due to tensions between the American colonists and the British, the colonists wanted to break away and form a government where their ideas were heard. The primary tension was caused by the problems in the economy. Britain was left with a lot of debt after the Seven Years War. The colonists were blamed for this because they were clashing with the Native Americans and the French who had other settlements further inland a space the American settlers wanted to occupy. Fighting the Natives and the French cost the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Research Paper Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is an extremely rare, deleterious disease caused by a type of viral pathogen called a coronavirus. The disease first appeared among residents of southern China, near Hong Kong, in 2002. Over the course of eight months, the disease spread to up to 8,000 individuals, 10% of which died. As a contagious viral pandemic, SARS diffused to nearly 30 countries by 2003, including Germany, Canada, and the United States. However, by 2004, all cases of SARS disappeared and have not reappeared anywhere since then. After considerable research, scientists discovered that the infection was caused by a single stranded RNA coronavirus. The virus was so named due to the several corona like spikes that were known to protrude from the molecule. Because SARS suddenly attracted widespread attention when it was first identified in China in 2002, the virus was classified as an emerging infectious disease.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Symptoms that commonly afflict people with SARS are flu like symptoms such as fever, fatigue, weakness, chills, muscle ache, and migraine headaches. It is not until after the onset of these symptoms when the virus begins to attack the respiratory system. Some of the most severe clinical respiratory symptoms include breathing difficulties, dry coughing, and a sharp reduction of oxygen levels in the blood. In some instances, the respiratory symptoms of SARS are fatal. After contracting SARS, people typically develop terminal pneumonia soon thereafter. • 9. Hollywood Rating System In order for us to stop the constant bombardment of uninspired adaptations, sequels, prequels, remakes, and reboots we need to create a new rating system, one which doesn t stifle the creativity of talented filmmakers by slapping their films with arbitrary ratings. This new rating system would also abolish the supervisory role for movie theaters. The rule that kids must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian to an R rated filmis based on the notion that a 14 year old can be shielded from worrisome material by an 18 year old. This is such a ridiculous concept seeing as we live in a time where it s unbelievably easy to get access to much more explicit content on the internet than anything you d find in a standard R rated film. Speaking of, this new rating system would also end R ratings for multiple uses of the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We also need to cut down on piracy so that Hollywood studios have more of a reason to produce original films. That means being cautious on how we educate about piracy with a younger demographic since a lot of teenagers and young adults today don t see illegal piracy in quite as black and white terms as people use to. Instead of lecturing about the legality of piracy, content creators should instead try to focus on forming a genuine, connected relationship with their audience. They should also choose to share some of their work with the public free of charge. Creators who have done this in the past have received plenty of financial support from the communities that they built. As I mentioned before, piracy is unlikely to go away altogether but in order for it to be reduced, filmmakers who are opposed to piracy and people who engage in it need to find common ground and this can be done by the creators understanding their audience s ... The theory suggests that the media such as movies and advertisements were made to grab heterosexual male s attention and pleasure their perspective of women. She says that women are objectified and that their bodies are often centered as the attention grabber. The use of slow motion, certain camera cuts and angels are done in order to make a women s body more admirable as seen from a man s perspective. From the slideshow source given, it is suggested that male gazing causes hegemonic, visual pleasure, enforced genderroles, scopophilia, and femaleobjectification. In the movie Focus, I have seen male gaze occur. The two main characters in the movie Focus are Will Smith as Nicky and Margot Robbi as Jess. I do believe that there is the male gaze in the film industry, because I see it so often when women are being sexually objectified and the center of attention goes to their looks. I could name a list of movie names that have male gazed . There aren t money movies that concentrate on what a female character offers intellectually but instead their physical attributes are valued more. I think the male gaze is problematic because it allows men to continue to objectify women and only see them as important by the way they look. This also influences women to look at themselves and other women in a man s point of view. The male gaze also form an unrealistic view of what women look like and what they should look like. • 11. Analysis Of Storm Warnings By Adrienne Rich No storm is experienced the same. Seeing a storm on the horizon has the power to stir up gripping memories, introspective thoughts, and convoluted emotions. The poem Storm Warnings , by Adrienne Rich, applies a predictable structure paired with flowing syntax, and ambiguous diction speaking both of weather and emotions to illustrate that one cannot avoid the tribulations of life, embodied as the approaching storm, but instead prepare for their arrival. Storm Warnings, true to its literal subject matter, possesses flowy sweeping syntax created by the strategic use of commas and phrasing to draw parallels between the physical oncoming winds and the gales of life. The author crafts a long run on sentence that spans the first stanza and carries on into the latter portion of the second to mirror the continuous flowing of windy weather and the forward motion of life. Once the speaker notices the brewing storm, they walk from window to closed window, watching boughs strain against the sky. In this portion of the affromented run on sentence, alliteration, rhythm, and the repetition of words all contribute to the impression of movement. The various w sounds at the beginnings of words and the repetition of the word window create a sensation of continuously flowing forward, especially when read aloud; the comma adds a small swirling pause to the rhythm, which is then soon after resumed with the word watching. Just as the poem rhythmically moves forward with its long phrases connected with frequent commas, so must life carry on with each additional experience, whether it be misfortunes or joys. The elongated syntax allows all these elements to work together within sentences to highlight the similarities between physical storms and emotional struggle and to stress the inevitability of predicaments in life. Despite the flowing syntax, the poem has a clear and predictable structure to replicate the persona s calm familiarity with experiencing and answering to storms in their life. It is interesting to note that even though parlous weather is on its way, there is a lack of panic, chaos, and anomalies in the structure of the poem. There continues to be seven lines in each stanza throughout the piece; ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dropping Of Nagasaki Research Paper Dropping of the bomb Nagasaki On August 9th, 1945 at 11:02 A.M., another B 29 bomber, Bock s Car, piloted by Charles Sweeney was sent by the United States to drop over Nagasaki. The bomb, called Fat Man, was dropped because of the devastation at Hiroshima being insufficient in persuading the Japanese War Council to accept Potsdam Conference s demand for unconditional surrender. Planning to drop the atomic bomb on August 11th, the United States had to push forward the date to August 9th because of bad weather. The emergence of cell phones has been identified as such a case study in this paper. Keywords Technology evolution, innovation, cellular phone, emergence road mapping. INTRODUCTION TO MOBILE PHONES Wireless communication has come a long way since weighing around 1.1 kg in 1983 to the myriad of smartphones available in the market today that are lightweight and loaded with endless features. But it all began towards the 20th century, when telegraph and radio technology were evolving tremendously. The transatlantic telegraph was built by 1866. An affinity towards wireless communication was growing for a number of reasons: (i)Increased mobility. (ii)No wiring. (iii)Remote access. (iv)Innovative solution. (v)Defence strategies. The concept of mobile phones is based on a very sophisticated radio. Mobile phones have power run transmitters in them. This power is supplied by a battery. A low power phone requires smaller battery that allows use of hand held sets, which are not overly bulky. The original lesson was well organized but very short. I chose to focus on Domain 2 Conceptual Understandings because this lesson plan only had one assessment and I felt that the assessment was weak in whether a teacher could gage students understanding of the material. This lesson did a below average job of explaining what the Homestead Actis through its powerpoint slideshow and worksheet activities. I also didn t like how the lesson plan was designed to show a video clip of the Western Expansion at the very end of the lecture. I feel that by showing this video is pointless and students might lose interest by the end of the lesson. Overall, I agree with the lesson objective but modified it to make it fit my lesson. I also thought that the opening question was a good way to start a discussion of what the Homestead Act is and why settlers moved west. I think this question really gets students thinking and is a great segway to the powerpoint lecture. After the class discussion the lesson plan went right into the the powerpoint lecture. I think this is a great next step but the powerpoint was very dry and boring. There is no way a class of 4th graders could sit for 20 minutes listening to the provided powerpoint. The worksheet packet is a great idea but it did not follow along with the powerpoint and at points is confusing. I believe if a teacher is going to provide a worksheet packet ... Three poems with central ideas that stood out to me were The Darkling Thrush by Thomas Hardy, Days by Philip Larkin, and Remembrance by Emily BrontГ«. The central idea of each of these poems revolve around the idea of time and change. Firstly, I will discuss how in The Darkling Thrush the simple and traditional structure, the bleak yet straightforward style and techniques such as vivid imagery and capitalisation combine to develop the central idea of change. The same can be said for the simple structure and style used in Days which combine with poetic techniques such as metaphors to develop Larkin s argument against time and change. Finally I will discuss how the idea of time is developed through techniques such as vivid imagery and symbolism in Remembrance along with changing styles and a slow, consistent rhythm. The Darkling Thrush is a poem written by Thomas Hardy that explores the regular life changes a person must endure throughout their lifetime. The structure of the poem is very traditional and simple. It starts off with a structure of ABABCDCD and repeats this structure for the next three stanzas. Perhaps Hardy thought that a jagged rhyme scheme or untraditional ... The Athenians and their Allies was an organisation led by the Athenians in the 5th century, but is now referred to as the Delian League or the Confederacy of Athens. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The besiegement of Thasos revealed Athens true motivations behind the League and the future plans for her allies. According to _Ancient Greece Using Sources_ Thasos was one of the largest and richest members of the Delian League, and a conflict broke out between Athens and Thasos over the gold mining on the island. Thasos then attempted to withdraw from the League, as the Persians were no longer a threat in the Aegean, and Athens was demanding too much for too little in return. The League, under the control of Cimon, then besieged Thasos for two years, and destroyed their city walls, confiscated their navy, closed their mint and annexed their possessions on the mainland. According to Thucydides, the period from the revolt of Thasos to the ostracism of Cimon (465 461BC) was the time when the main friction between Sparta and Athens occurred and eventually led to their war. If Sparta really was willing to attack Athens, an apparent ally, then their relationship must have been weak and forced. Was Sparta jealous of Athens wealth and power? Did they feel threatened by the Athenians sudden harshness against their own allies ? Or it could have been a combination of reasons. Often, a person s role in society helped the audience understand what side they were on. Princes, kings, knights, these were the good characters. Tax collectors, witches, and other villains were quite obviously evil. In modern times, we consider law enforcement officers to be on the side of good. However, whenever a character who clearly belongs to one side or the other makes an appearance, we expect them to do something. Witches don t just pass through town, they throw fireballs and put curses on people. Knights don t simply gallop by, they stop and rescue damsels in distress. If a character who clearly belongs to one side or the other appears and fails to advance their side s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This is evidenced in that, while investigating the murder of a young girl, the police go door to door a single time canvassing for witnesses. When everyone claims that they didn t see anything, the police move on. The play suggests that this, along with picking up the usual black suspects for questioning, is about the extent of their investigation. The police don t appear to spend much time gathering evidence from the scene. They don t come back to see if anyone has remembered anything since the shock wore off. In fact, they seem to be trying to avoid the scene of the crime. Zooman himself calls the police officers out on their lack of dedication to finding a murderer in this rough neighborhood, claiming, [I]f a black kills a black, and they don t catch you right away, they [sic] liable to forget about it (Fuller 47). Man Against Nature In Jack London s To Build A Fire Man against Nature: A Look Into To Build a Fire by Jack London Introduction The human being has in most instances tried to outdo nature through creativity and innovation. Man s fight against nature is endlessly continuous and determined. It is of great significance that man understands that this competition with nature in the face of such overwhelming odds is insignificant. A clear cut example of this unproductive struggle is a story by Jack London, To Build a Fire whereby he uses man versus nature to support his primary theme that our struggle against nature is vastly unequal one that leaves little or no margin for error (London, 25). The Armenians were Christian, unlike the Turks, who were Muslim. This led to unequal treatment of Armenians. For example, they had to pay higher taxes, yet had fewer political and legal rights. However, Armenians were very successful in the Ottoman Empire, which is another reason they were treated badly. They also were thought of as traitors because they might join the Russians in the war since they are also Christians. These were some of the reasons why the massacres began. Other reasons include the start of WW1 which allowed them to hide the massacres from the outside word, and made Turk suspicious of Armenians loyalty. Also the new government called the Young Turks saw the Armenians as a threat to the new state. The massacres that took place in the Ottoman Empire between 1914 1918 exhibited the ninth and tenth Stages of Genocide; Extermination and Denial. • 37. Analysis Of The Play Macbeth Abigail Castillo WHUM December 2014 Final exam Macbeth There are many conflicts found in the play Macbeth by Shakespeare both external and internal. There is man vs. society, man vs. self, man vs. man, and even man vs. supernatural. In my opinion, I believe that the central conflict in Macbeth s plot is man vs. self, an internal conflict. This internal conflict begins when Macbeth overhears the three witch sisters, also known as the Weird Sisters, making a prediction that one day he will be become King and rule. From this point on in the play, he (Macbeth) is conflicted about murdering Duncan, King of Scotland, in order to gain power. Macbeth starts of the play as a good, honest warrior and the well trusted captain of King Duncan. Macbeth begins to experience the conflict of man vs self because of his wise to become king (as well as his trust in the witches prediction) which directly goes against his loyalty to King Duncan. Even though he goes through internal conflicts with himself over committing this crime many times his ambition wins, and he becomes a killer. His conscience seems to overcome everything else by the end, and this is also true for other characters in the play. This ambition combined with guilt creates a man vs self conflict all throughout the play. Ambition has severe consequences as seen when Macbeth is slain and branded a tyrant. Under the law, age discrimination can involve treating an employee or applicant less favorably because of her or his age. In accordance to the Age Discriminationin Employment Act, it is unlawful to discriminate an employee on basis their age. The law is categorically clear that an employer not discriminate individuals who are 40 years old and above (Walsh, 2013). The law strongly prohibits age discrimination in any aspect of employment including firing, hiring, pay, promotions, job assignments, trainings, layoffs, benefits, and any other condition or term of employment. The law also strongly (and word strongly should be emphasized here) prohibits against harassment of a worker basing on her or his age. If you step back and look at the whole, you can see the difference between the character s personalities and their morality. After reading many of stories from each collection I see that Norse Mythology has higher morals than Greek Mythology because Norse Mythology recognizes an individual s choices and the advantages of choosing right over wrong, they can also recognize the importance... • 51. Cyber Security, By Mark Rasch The ISSA conference was very enlightening and interesting. Mark Rasch introduced cyber security to us from a very different perspective that I haven t had anyone explore before. To some extent it clears and clarifies some of the decisions that have been taken resulting in the many different cases that I have read in the news regarding cyber security. The closest example that comes to mind is the Snowden case in regards to privacy and security laws. In addition to that, I concur with Mark regarding the laws that are stated that in terms of privacy are not as transparent and certain loopholes change the way these laws can have effect upon an individual, organization or an employee. As per what I understood from his initial remarks about lawmaking from his early work experience. The scenarios that Mark jumped into, being that conference a room of senior officials who have all the authority and power that they need to take certain kinds of decisions that will change things beyond our borders. It was an on the spot exercise that actually made me think harder and allowed me to grasp better the basic knowledge and understanding of cyber security that I have gained throughout this semester. I have been recommended to read Sun Tzu s Art of War as it not only covers strategic aspects of only war but the main analogy of it could be applied to an individual s way of living and how he /she deals with the things that are encountered in one s daily life. Keeping that in mind, his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. 10 Mario Game Persuasive Essay (Trying to) Make a Memorable Mario I m well over 20 hours into Super Mario Maker and I have to admit, most of that s making Mario levels, not so much playing them. Maybe that s good since it s Mario maker, not player, but I m getting ahead of myself. The game begins like the old Mario Bros. for Nintendo, but with no enemies and a sudden cliff. You re told the level s unfinished and you re asked to complete the level for your tutorial. Silhouettes of where to place enemies and blocks are strewn about, and you re walked through the basics, like shaking to change a unit s function or hiding power ups in blocks. It s good for the basics, but it doesn t walk players through the concept of good level design. You start out with brick blocks, ? ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Course world gives you 100 in the 100 Mario Challenge, but they both have one important rule: 1 ups don t take effect until you ve beaten a level (but earning one is stored even if you die), and you can t gain more than three 1 Up mushrooms at the end of the level, which helps mix things up for the 10 Mario Challenge, but in levels where a designer has more than three traps, it means you re coming out of that challenge at a loss most of the time. Worse yet, many of the expert level designers use few to no coins or 1 Ups, making your ability to recover from your losses even more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. Mutations In MSX1 Case Study Mutations in MSX1 gene cause a verity of diseases. Mutations hit different sites on msx1 that resulted in different phenotypes. It has been identified some mutations locations such as in frame mutations, including 18 missense mutations and truncating mutations, including 5 nonsense mutations, 5 indel mutations, 1 splice variant, 1 nonstop variant, and 1 entire genedeletion. Farther, some of these mutations disturb the homeodomain and some don t but located in N terminus protein. The indel mutations and the missense mutations severely disturb the DNAbinding domain (4). These mutations in homeodomain are associated with tooth agenesis with or without orofacial clefting. The outside homeodomain mutations are associated with nonsyndromic... They analyzed three generation of tooth agenesis Japanese family by using whole exome sequencing (WES). They found that a novel single nucleotide substitution in the MSX1 intron which makes splicing occurs at 7bp instead of the normal splicing site which is the exon 2, resulting a C terminal truncated gene product . This substitution is inserted between the positions 451 and 452. It is worth notice that insertion is (3). Another study conducted in Japan family with non syndromic tooth agenesis. The authors identified a novel frameshift mutation by using mice with CRISPR/Cas system. The mutation occurred in a highly conserved C terminal domain of MSX1, (MH6). Homozygous mice at E16.5 showed agenesis of lower incisors with or without cleft palate. 4 week old mutant mice showed agenesis of the upper third molars and the lower second and third molars. Besides, the upper second molars were small (12). Furthermore, a study involved six Japanese families with non syndromic tooth agenesis. There was a novel nonsense mutation in exon 1 in a family with oligodontia. This mutation made a termination codon in the first exon, which led to truncated W139X at the C terminus and no homeodomain MH4. Missing MH4 resulted in losing DNA binding, protein protein interaction, and nuclear localization that MH4 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 54. The Fight For The Survival Of The Fatherland Life was different, you have to understand, the choices I made, they were because I had to, for the survival of the Nation. People do not seem to understand that, the fight for the survival of the fatherland, the idea is lost among people nowadays. There was a pressure amongst everyone, inbred in our bones, the need to fit in, to join the Party, if you refused...you could not refuse. Change became a constant that was always drastic. You did not make your own decisions anymore, I remember that even as a young boy, my decisions were all made for me, in the name of the National Socialist Party, in the name of our Fuhrer. My father made the choices for me when I was young. For that, I blame what I became on him, for the path he led me down, but my actions, they were my own, forced upon me like a pawn in a larger game than life, but still my own. My father was a cold man, his love was for his country and his job. He was the kind of man that looked for an excuse to use his belt, I remember the thrashing I would receive as a child... I feared him, and for that, he earned my respect. My father was a large supporter of the Regime, having worked as an officer for several years he rose quickly through relations with Reinhard Heydrich. I remember many nights when he and father would drink and smoke cigars in the study. He moved quickly by greasing hands and soon I remember that we moved from our small house into a much larger one, closer to my father s new office. That is when the ... • 55. Animal Vivisection Live animal dissection have been recorded in ancient Greek writings from as early as 500 BC. Vivisection (dissection of living organisms) was first practiced on humans in ancient Rome, but it was soon prohibited and thus the need for animal subjects. During the early stages of animal testing, Many philosophers debated on animal vivisection, Aristotle argued that animals lacked intelligence, and so the meaning of right and wrong had no meaning to them. Theophrastus, Aristotle s successor, disagreed and objected to the vivisection of animals on the idea that like humans, they can feel pain, and causing pain to animals was an insult to the gods. Descartes knew that animals could feel, but lacked a conscious, thus he argued that they were unable to consciously experience those feelings. Many others believed that animals were automata and that the way they experience pain and feelings is not the same as humans. Not until animals as pets were becoming more common did people start to really question the morality of animal vivisections, and thus, the birth of animal rights groups started popping up in 19th century England. Theodora Capaldo is president of the New England Anti Vivisection Society(NEAVS). An animal rights organization with a goal to end the use of animals in research, testing and science. NEAVS is dedicated to giving outreach and education for helping replace animals with more modern alternatives that are more efficient, ethical and humane. In Capaldo s article ... • 56. Trauma And Secondary Trauma Trauma is an experience copious amounts of people have encountered or will encounter within their lifetime. As many think about various traumatic experiences, one may think solely of victims of the trauma. As we think of the victims of traumatic experience, it is easy for the general public population to overlook the professionals who respond to traumatic incidents such as natural disasters, accidents, and intentional acts of harm or terror are not always brought to mind. According to the Wisconsin EMS Association statistics provided on their website, during the year 2011, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) reported to 598,416 emergency calls. Just in the state of Wisconsin, EMS workers as a whole were exposed to thousands of potentially traumatizing incidences. Exploring the impacts of trauma and different treatments for workers who are impacted through their job of saving lives and responding to often devastating situations is essential to maintain a healthy mental health state....
