Presentation on:- Method of Insect Collection
METHODS OF COLLECTION
• Insects belong to various habitats.
• Can be collected by different methods.
• These methods are mentioned below:
1. Hand Picking
2. Sweeping
3. Beating
4. Aerial Netting
5. Trapping
6. Aspirator
7. Berlese funnel
HAND PICKING
oThe soft bodied insects are collected.
oForceps or hand brush is used to handle
insects, to avoid damaging insect body.
oE.g.: Ants, Larvae, termites etc.
SWEEPING
oSweeping nets are used for
collection from herbage.
oIt must be of tough cloth.
oE.g.: Insects in flowers, bushes
or near groung.
BEATING
oBeating is used to dislodge
insects from foliage or trees.
oA long stick is used for
beating & insects are collected
in tray.
oE.g.: Bugs, small beetles etc.
AERIAL NETTING
oAerial nets are most widely
used to collect free living
flying insects.
oAfter netting the net should be
turned to prevent the escape of
captured insect.
oE.g.: Dragonfly, Moths,
Butterflies , Wasps, Bees etc.
TRAPPING
oTraps are an easy & often effective method of collection.
oThe attractive material is used to attract insects & are trapped.
oThe trap depends on the type of insects one wants to collect.
oSome common traps are enlisted below:
I. LIGHT TRAP
II. BAIT TRAP
III. WIND TRAP
TRAPPING
Ligt Trap
o An artificial light source is
used as attracting material.
o Electrical lamp is placed
adjacent to white muslin cloth
in field.
o E.g.: Grasshoppers, Crickets &
Moths etc.
Bait Trap
o In this trap a particular type
of odour.
o The odour of food or
pheromones are used.
o E.g.: Flying insects, No. of
insects present on near by
field, etc.
Wind trap
o The wind traps may be range
between a simple clothe attached
to pole.
o This is in the direction of wind
or an electrically operated
suction device.
o E.g.: Aphids are often trapped by
wind trap.
Light trap Bait Trap Wind trap
ASPIRATOR
o It is a very simple device & if used with
little patience may yield desirable results.
o One has to suck the air by rubber tube,
which would draw the insect into the
main tube through glass tube.
o E.g.: Small active insects Like leafhoppers
, white flies , etc.
BERLESE FUNNEL
oBerlese funnel is used to separate
insects from soil or leaf litter.
oInsects are collected along with
the part of habitat & separated in
laboratory.
oE.g.: Larvae in soil , Ants ,
Termites , etc.
