Essay about Jane Addams
An American pragmatist and feminist, Hull House founder Jane Addams (1860 1935) came of age
in time of increasing tensions and division between segments of the American society, a division
that was reflected in debates about educational reform. In the midst of this diversity, Addams saw
the profoundly interdependent nature of all social and political interaction, and she aligned her
efforts to support, emphasize and increase this interdependence. Education was one of the ways
she relied on to overcome class disparity, as well as to increase interaction between classes. Her
theories about the interdependent nature of living in a democracy provided a backdrop for her
educational theory. Education, she thought, needed to produce people who... Show more content on

They have no common, collective faith. The labor movement in America displays this mark of
its youth and immaturity (Addams 61). In the same tone, she believed that the working class
and capitalists were not warring classes, but part of the same democratic society. The character
of American unions was predicted by Addams to be limited and disappointing. She supported the
workers goals of a shorter workday, increased wages, better industrial and general education, and
worker protection in the marketplace, but qualified her support when she wrote that the
movement does not want to lose sight of the end in securing the means, nor assume success, nor
even necessarily the beginnings of success, when these first aim are attained (Addams 62).
Addams saw the definition of society as warring classes as one that damned society as a whole.
The literal notion of brotherhood demanded a beginning of universal kinship: before this larger
vision of life there can be no perception of sides and battle array (Addams 64). Labor unions
became, in fact, the tools of capitalists by reducing their talks to single industry issues. Addams
clearly did not support the Marxist vision of labor, although she frequently read writers adopting
this perspective. As a pragmatist, Addams advocated a number of laws to protect the worker,
especially women workers, which

The On Neural Tube Deficiency
Neural tube deficiency happens in about 80,000 and 100,000 pregnancies in China. It causes the
offspring to be born with defects of the brain, spine, or spinal cord. They happen in the first month
of pregnancy and both genetic and environments contribute to the cause. Numerous prospective,
retrospective and controlled trial studies have suggested proper folic acidsupplementation for
pregnant women can reduce the incidence of NTDs in their offspring. Association between folic
acid supplementation or dietary folate intake and NTDs risk may be affected by maternal body
mass index. Studies have suggested the risk of NTDs in offspring among obese mothers have
not decreased. Body mass index greater than 31kg is at risk of delivering an offspring with
NTDs. Other studies find more than 400mg of folate intake from diet per day is only protective
against NTDs in women who weigh less than 154.3Ibs. A total of 459 pairs of participants took
part in the study: 259 pairs were from Shandong Province and 200 pairs were from Shanxi
Province. Mothers who gave birth to healthy infants in the same area, same hospital and within the
same time as the another group was the controlled groups. The mothers were separated by
Underweight/normal weight BMI less than 24.0 and overweight/obese mothers BMI greater than
24.0. Given folic acid was defined as taking 0.4mg of a folic acid tablet and categorized folic acid

Charles Manson Neglect
Other Contexts of Neglect and Abuse Manson s grandparents. When Kathy Maddox was
arrested and imprisoned in 1940 for an armed robbery, 6 year old Manson was sent to live with
his grandparents who were perceived as overly obsessive religious fanatics. According to Hickey
(2003), Manson s grandmother dominated the household with both a stern and unwavering
interpretation of what she believed to be God s plan and some of her strictly religious practices
included intense prayer sessions both before and after meals, as well as at bedtime. There was
no drinking, smoking, or swearing allowed, and Manson was told to turn the other cheek to any
violent or aggressive act initiated by some of the other kids at school. His grandmother also
demanded that everyone living in her house must abide by her rules or else suffer the
consequences, and this included her own husband as well. As Hickey (2003) explains, Manson
never witnessed any display of affection between his grandparents. His grandfather was... Show

Adler s theory of individual personality doesn t necessarily account for individuals with two
unique sides personality, which is evident throughout the context and background of his life. On
one hand, he was a magnetic and loving person that drew in others with his intelligence and self
proclaimed talent. On the other hand, the persona he presented to others was not his true self.
Deep within the depths of Manson s charming personality hides a villain, a manipulator, a
criminal, and a murderer. In addition to the many lies that he has told about both himself and his
life, as well as the manipulative behavior he displays, it s exceptionally hard to decipher what is
fact and what is just simply untrue, making the application of any psychological theory nearly
impossible. However, Adlerian theory does provide a probable explanation for why Manson turned

Canada is one of the wealthiest companies and have a strong import and export to United States and

Freedom Of Choice In Walt Whitman s I Hear America Singing
Being in American isn t standing up for the pledge, not just taking a moment of silence, and not
just celebrating the 4th of July. Being an American means having freedom in choosing your own
path, opportunity in creating your own destiny, and a hard working mentality to achieve your
goals. Since the beginning of the establishment of the United State; people have wanted the
freedom of choice. Immigrants long for it, and Americans have the ability to carry it out. We
first see freedom of choice in I Hear America Singing by Walt Whitman. The poem sates, The
shoemaker singing as he sits in his bench, the hatter singing as he stands, the woodcutter s song
(12). The following excerpt displays the freedom of choice in the lower class, or the blue collar
jobs. They might not have the ideal job that everyone wants, but the great thing about America is
that you are free to choose whatever job you want. Secondly we see this idea of freedom of choice

writes, I got up early. I worked till late. All that my soul hungered to give I put into the passion

displays that despite her current predicament she is willing to do whatever it takes to have a better
life for herself; she inherits a hard working mentality just like an American has. Next example of
hard working mentality in Americans is in the poem I, Too Sing America by Langston Hughes. In
the poem Langston Hughes writes, Tomorrow, I ll be at the table when company comes (3). This
shows that he s not satisfied with his current situation and despite his predicament he still wants
better for himself and doesn t stop his admirations. This is what it means to be an American; having

factors that made the University of Alabama s performance stand out to me including the

The hygienist uses a small mirror and a dental probe or explorer to check around your teeth and
gums to make sure there is no sign of decay. They also check for signs of gingivitis (inflammation
of the gums,) periodontal disease (disease of the gums,) and/or oral cancer. Prior to getting this
done, the hygienist goes over your medical history, taking notes about any heart problems, diabetes,
past surgeries, and medications, that may impact your oral health. After the hygienists do all of
this, she/he may proceed to the second step. The second step is removing the plaque, tartar, and

Once the hygienist removes the larger pieces of tartar, they will switch to a hand instrument called

smaller pieces of tartar and plaque. Each tooth is done individually to ensure that all bacteria,
plaque, and tartar is sufficiently removed. Once the hygienist is finished with the past step and

Analysis Of Robin Thicke s The Summer
In 2013, Robin Thicke, a relatively unknown but well seasoned R B singer, found major success
in his upbeat song Blurred Lines, which featured the big named artists Pharrell Williams and T.I.
(McKinley). The hit song broke records by spending 16 weeks on top of Billboard s Hot R B/Hip
Hop Song chart, its popularity earning it the title of Billboard s Song of the Summer (Ramirez).
The uncensored video on Vevo features three female models wearing nothing but shoes and nude
colored underwear dancing and strutting around Thicke, Williams, and T.I., who are fully dressed
and frequently seen looking at the women s bodies. Although Blurred Lines garnered extreme
popularity, it didn t go unnoticed that the lyrics and video, especially when paired together, tended
to be off putting for women, even though there was supposedly no intention of sexist allusions.
When viewed through the lens of Stuart Hall s Encoding/decodingmodel, the stark contrast between
the creators intended meaning of the Blurred Lines video and the way in which the audience
perceived it illustrates??? In Encoding/decoding, Stuart Hall provides audiences with an alternate
process of communication. Instead of following the sender/message/receiver structure, Hall
examines what he describes as a complex structure of dominance which considers the distinctive

Analysis of The Book of Deutoronomy Essay
The book of Deuteronomy was written in the time as the Israelites were making their way into
the Promised land. The Book of Deuteronomy was written for many reasons. One of them being
that, since during tha time Moses was used as a messenger to the people, he was needed to give
the Israelites retrospective on what God has accomplished for them thus far. The book was also
used for the constant mention of what the Lord our God has truly done for them. The name of the

My Passion Of Reading
Being able to read and write is arguably the most essential skill needed in life. I was able to
begin mastering the skill of reading at a very young age and to some individuals it may become
later in life because it seems boring to them. I did not have an interest in reading until I watched
the movie Pearl Harbor the one with Ben Affleck in it. This movie created my passion of reading
by learning about the second world war. Also, I read books to learn new information on
material. I did not do it for any type of approval from someone contradictory to Cisneros who
always wanted the approval of her father (102). At a young age, I never enjoyed reading because
it seemed boring, pointless, and a waste of time, but when I started to read about World War II I
started to read more and more articles and books whenever I had the opportunity. First, the
second world war ignited the flame that started all the reading over the last nine years of my
life. The first book that I read was With the Old Breed: At Peleliu and Okinawa, this book was
about the journal entries the author, Eugene Bondurant (E.B.) Sledge, kept inside of his pocket
sized Bible. He carried the journal entries with him during the events he fought in at Okinawa and
Peleliu. While reading the book there were many words that I did not understand or did not make
sense with the context of the sentence. I was able to use a dictionary to look up the words and
learn the words that previously had no meaning to me in any

Richard Wilbur s The Death Of A Toad
Richard Wilbur s poem, The Death of a Toad, powerfully describes the death of a toad chewed and
clipped by a power mower in a gardening accident. Wilbur extends the incident to be metaphoric
and symbolic of death and our inability to prevent it. The poem reflects on the appearance and
thoughts that even a toad might have when approaching death. As the speaker ponders over the
incident it becomes clear that the toads death is seen as more than just death itself but rather this
mystical journey from start to finish.
The poem is divided into three stanzas, each with six lines of varying lengths. The form and
balance of the stanzas create a visual and formal precision. Each stanza tells of the events in a

Similarities Between Good Night And Good Luck And The...
Have you ever been blamed for something that you never took part in, or something you didn t
do? How awful did it make you feel? Pretty terrible, I know. This is what was happening
everyday in 1950 s when the second red scare occurred. The movie Good Night, and Good Luck
and The Crucible by Arthur Miller display the many false accusations that were brought upon the
plethora of people in the society that were said to be people they weren t. This made the public
aware of what was really going on at the time, and to show that history was repeating itself.
There are two people who were falsely accused that were definitely surprising when reading and
watching the two forms of entertainment were Edward Murrow and John Proctor. These two
characters are very similar in the sense that they both were wrongfully alleged to be people that
they weren t. Mary Warren, a weak follower in the novel, says to Proctor in front of the judges
Don t touch me don t touch me! You re the Devil s man! (Miller 1212) Because of this, Proctor
gets arrested and is hung in Act IV. However, what Mary Warren said was not true. John wasn t
the most perfect person in Salem, but he was not a witch, nor working with the devil! John
proctor tried to help those who were falsely accused as well. He did everything in his power to

Judith Beheading Holofernes Analysis
Conflict and Art: Renaissance to Modern Day The three works selected in this paper are: Judith
Beheading Holofernes, The Death of Lucretia, and Le Dejeuner Sur I herbe. Each artwork comes
from a different era; the three eras being Baroque, Neoclassical, and Modernism.
Judith Beheading Holofernes is a painting by Artermisa Gentileschi during the Baroque era of art in
Italia. This painting is her visual of a scene told in The Book of Judith. In the scene Judith has
gained access to Holofernes s tent and he later passes out from being intoxicated giving Judith
the advantage to be able to decapitate him in turn saving her home land (Buckley, Peter J., M.D.
American Journal of Psychiatry). This painting shows the conflict men bring on to the countries
without a thought on their actions. Judith took control of the situation by getting rid of
Holofernes but by her look. It shows how a man can easily be fooled by a women s looks that he
doesn t see the woman as any kind of threat towards him. With the help of her looks Judith was

In Judith Beheading Holofernes Judith used her beauty to her advantage to get access to

Essay about Comparison of Maupassant s Short Stories
Comparison of Maupassant s Short Stories A Vendetta is a short story written by Guy de
Maupassant pre 1914. It is set in Bonifacio, Corsica and is about Antoine Saverini who was
savagely murdered and his mother who swore over his dead body that she would seek revenge.
After an argument, Nicolas Ravolati murders Antoine Saverini by stabbing him in the back.
When his mother sees her son s dead body for the first time, brought to her house by passers by,

He crams A Vendetta full of descriptive writing giving the reader a better understanding of
where the story is set and the characters that are in the story. The first two paragraphs only
describe Bonifacio, where A Vendetta is set. Maupassant gives a very negative image to
Bonifacio, describing its ramparts and its bristling reefs . It is a dangerous channel into which
few ships venture . By using dramatic imagery he manages to give the impression that Bonifacio
is a very dangerous and unwelcoming place. I like Maupassant s use of similes especially They
look like the nests of wild birds clinging to the rock looking down on this dangerous channel .
This helps the reader to visualise the pebble dashed cottages literally clinging onto the
mountainside. Throughout the story Maupassant uses imagery in a very dramatic way.
Maupassant makes clever use of personification, The wind harasses the sea remorselessly giving
the impression of a turbulent storm, it is as if the sea has got a life of its own. Maupassant s use
of the word harasses is very powerful and it conjures up an atmosphere of storms, thunder and
lightning, again portraying that Bonifacio is a dangerous place. He describes Saverini s house as
clinging to the very edge of the cliff once again using personification to describe Bonifacio. The
two main characters in A Vendetta are the old woman and Frisky.

The Beauty Of Motherhood And Breastfeeding
In this paper I will evaluate two artworks that share the same theme of motherhood and
breastfeeding. In the last few years, the sexualization of breastfeeding has become a big issue. This
is due to people see breast as sexual objects and think that women are being exhibitionist, and are
doing it just to flaunt their breasts in public. Breastfeedingmothers are faced with the public
criticism as they struggle to breastfeed their child, although it is the most natural and healthy
method of feeding. The first artwork is by Mary Cassattand is titled MotherRose Nursing her Child.
This painting was created in the 1900s and it depicts a woman breastfeeding her child. The
second piece is a contemporary portrait created by Catherine Opie titled Self Portrait Nursing.
The portrait depicts a modern mother also nursing her child. When comparing both of these
pieces of art I plan to focus on the beauty of motherhood and the bond between mother and child.
In this paper I will discuss the social issue of mother s being criticized for breastfeeding in
public. Now more than ever women s breasts are being overly sexualized when they are not a
sexual organ, but in fact a part of their body used to feed another human being. Mary Stevenson
Cassatt (May 22, 1844 June 14, 1926) was an American painter and printmaker. She lived most of
her adult life in France. She was born in Allegheny City, Pennsylvania, which is now part of

Reflection Of Consumer Chemistry

Everything is science. There are different branches of science. Including Biology, Botany, Zoology,

Biophysical Ecology and Pattern Recognition Essay
Biophysical Ecology and Pattern Recognition
Abstract:
This study was undertaken to investigate behavioral adaptations of a lizard, Lacertilia, to its
environment. Twelve peeps, representing the lizards, were placed in a habitat with two
microhabitats of different temperatures. Six peeps were placed in one microhabitat, and six in the
other. The internal temperature of these lizards was measured over a period of 20 minutes to see if
their body temperatures matched that of their environment and to make inferences about the
behavioral adaptations the organism might acquire to maintain its body temperature. One
microhabitat was on a tree and under the branches; the other was at the base of the tree. We

simulate the organism. Groups chose one habitat and put 6 peeps in each microhabitat, which
differed in temperature. The I buttons were inserted into each peep and groups waited 20 minutes
until taking the I buttons out. Observations about each microhabitat were recorded. For our
experiment, we tried to find a habitat that had microhabitats of very different temperatures so that
we could clearly see how the organism reacts to different temperatures. Our microhabitats were on
a tree. One of them was on the actual tree, near the leaves. The other was at the base of the tree on
the soil, and we used a lizard, Lacertilia, as our organism.
Data Analysis
After conducting the experiment, statistical analysis was done to see how the observed results
compared to expected results (hypotheses). ). The data was obtained from blackboard and put it

The Pros And Cons Of Corporate Social Responsibility
In this global dispensation, corporate social responsibility has been a topical issue for companies in

no day that passes by without hearing the society or the media reporting of environmental pollution
and unethical misconduct or corporate misbehaviour. This is because of the companies operating in
the oil industry, chemical industry, tobacco industry and mining industry, for example, they directly

that companies that are involved in CSR are more profitable than their peers who are not socially

attention of managers from the objective of the organization. Managers are stewards of
organization and their task is to invest the assets received from creditors and stockholders to
increase profits and dividends. However, when they turn their attention to activities that are in the

Thomas Aquinas Fourth Argument
While quite a bit of Aquinas framework is worried about uncommon disclosure the principle of the
Incarnation of God s Word in Jesus Christ the Five Ways are cases of characteristic religious
philosophy (Vidali, 2017). The arguments are known as argument from motion, argument from
efficient cause, argument from necessary being, argument from gradations of goodness, and
argument from design (Lander University, 2012). The argument that has caught my attention and
goes with my beliefs is the argument from gradations of goodness. Aquinas fourth argument is that
from degrees of goodness. Everything display more noteworthy or lesser degrees of goodness.
There must subsequently exist an incomparable flawlessness that every blemished being approach

To summarize this argument there are diverse degrees of goodness in various things, there are
distinctive degrees of being in various things the all the more being, the more goodness, for there to
be degrees of being by any stretch of the imagination, there must be something which has being in
the most elevated degree, in this way, a being in the Highest Degree or Perfect Being exists (Lander
University, 2012). Thomas contends that to clarify the presence of this degree in being, there must
be something which is uttermost being (Thomas Aquinas: The Fourth Way, 2013). This is obviously
Aristotle s God, a being that is unadulterated fact. This being totally needs privation and
probability, and is as such impeccable in its being (Thomas Aquinas: The Fourth Way, 2013). I do

“The Police Who Killed Walter Scott And Laquan Mcdonald
The police who killed Walter Scott and Laquan McDonald now face criminal charges largely due
to video cameras that captured the shootings. (No Tape, No Testimony) Police body cameras are
used in some police departments as a way to record any interaction between an officer and a
citizen. Some Americans today seem to think that police body cameras interfere with their right to
privacy, because they record sensitive situations. Other Americans believe that the cameras serve as
evidence in case something doesn t go as planned. Police body cameras should be used nationwide
because they provide direct evidence, stop police misconduct, build trust, and protect the innocent

Luckily, Police body cameras prevent those situations from happening. They capture the entire
interaction to keep things fair. With today s advanced technology, police body cameras have
proven to be very useful. They are crucial in putting an end to unnecessary police misconduct. In
2012, the Rialto Police Department in California implemented police body cameras and
recorded the outcome. The results showed that the number of complaints filed against officers
fell by 88 percent compared with the previous 12 months. Use of force by officers fell by almost
60 percent over the same period (Lovett). Without a doubt, police body cameras do the trick to
prevent potentially dangerous situations from occurring. As William A. Farrar, the Rialto police
chief once stated, When you put a camera on a police officer, they tend to behave a little better,
follow the rules a little better. And if a citizen knows the officer is wearing a camera, chances are
the citizen will behave a little better. I strongly agree with this statement because if the interaction
between the officer and the citizen is being recorded, neither of the two will want to behave
badly. The citizen knows that their bad behavior could result in consequences and the officer
knows that their misconduct could result in punishment or even the loss of their job. The cameras
record every detail that can be looked back on if there was a complaint filed against the officer that
was wearing it. Clearly, police body

Clinical Reasoning Model Essay
Incorporating theory into practice is very important aspect in nursing profession. Nurses employ
analytical thinking and reasoning to evaluate health assessments and physical examinations. Core
essences of this concept include cognition, metacognition and discipline specific knowledge
(Simmons, B. 2010). The clinical reasoning model aids nurses to make clinical judgments. In the
scenario of Mrs Alice Palmer, numerous investigation where taken and due to limited information
more subjective data was needed as well as objective data had to be monitored constantly. Effective
clinical reasoning depends upon the nurse s ability to collect the right cues and to take the right
action for the right patient at the right time and for the right reason (Levett Jones, Hoffman,... Show

The application of critical thinking and clinical reasoning are crucial fundamentals in everyday
life of nurse s clinical practice. Like most skills, the more the nurses train, the more natural and
easier it becomes. Encouraging comparisons with similar presentations help learners widen their
differential diagnosis (Pinnock, R., Welch, P. 2014). Critical thinking is a purposeful, goal
directed thinking process that strives to problem solve patient care issues through the use of
clinical reasoning (Estes, M., Calleja, P., Theobald, K., Harvey, T. 2016). Clinical reasoning
whereas is a disciplined, creative and reflective approach used together with critical thinking to
establish potential strategies to assist patients in reaching their desired health goals (Estes, M.,
Calleja, P., Theobald, K., Harvey, T. 2016). Both these skills are vital and failure to grasp and
master these abilities result in adverse patient outcomes such as improper patient care, incorrect
diagnose and inappropriate treatment. In other words, critical thinking and clinical reasoning leads

Epigenetic Modifications on Histones
Epigenetic modifications on histones and DNA exercise precise regulation of gene expression, and
thus have a profound influence on cellular differentiation and function. The most widely studied
modification on DNA is 5 methylcytosine (5mC) that frequently occurs in a CpG dinucleotide
context. Initially, the de novo DNAmethyltransferase (Dnmt) enzymes Dnmt3a and 3b mediate the
transfer of the methyl group to cytosine, while the maintenance Dnmt1 ensures subsequent
propagation of this mark through cell replication cycles. Because of prominent roles in gene
repression, retro element silencing, X chromosome inactivation and gene imprinting, 5mC was
initially thought to be irreversible. Thanks to burgeoning evidence, it is now clear that the
methylcytosine can be removed through a number of mechanisms. Passive demethylation is
proposed to remove 5mC over several cell replication cycles, through exclusion of the maintenance
machinery from the replication fork. Active demethylation on the other hand constitutes removal of
5mC through enzymatic hydrolysis. The discovery of Ten Eleven Transclocation (TET)
dioxygenase proteins was revolutionary. The TET proteins catalyze hydroxylation of 5mC to
5hmC, and conversion of 5hmC to 5 carboxylcytosine and finally to 5 formylcytosine. These 5mC
derivatives enter the base excision repair pathway (BER), resulting in replacement of the
methylcytosine with an unmodified cytosine. Second, although the role of deaminases is debated,
these enzymes

Immigration Process Essay
Millions of people have the desire to become citizens of the United States, but never consider
working with the department of US citizenship and immigration services. A lack of proper
understanding can keep you and your family from becoming citizens, so it is important to educate
yourself. With this guide, you will understand the truth behind these common myths regarding
immigration.
The Process Is Expensive
The cost of filing your application for citizenship may seem shocking, but it is actually a smart
investment to show you are sincere. In addition, the filing fee is a great deal less than paying
every 10 years to renew your green card.
Invest in your future up front and you will understand that the process is not really expensive.

Unfortunately, these tests can be frightening to some individuals, especially for those who do not
speak English well. However, the tests do not have to be overwhelming, since you will have a
good amount of time to prepare.
There are many free resources available that can help you understand your English language and
civics tests. Most people will pass the citizenship tests on their first try, but you will be able to take
the test again if necessary.
The Process Is Not Worth It In many cases, you are already living as a permanent resident of the
United States. This allows you to live and work in the United States legally. Unfortunately, being a
permanent resident does not offer you the same benefits as being an actual citizen. Putting in the
effort to become a citizen of the United States may actually be worth the process for you and your
family.
If you invest the time and energy into receiving your citizenship, you can rest easy in knowing
you will not be deported or lose your status as a citizen. You will be able o vote in elections and
travel in and out of the United States without any serious complications. Lastly, your family will be
given priority if they decide to immigrate to America.
Considering these enormous benefits, investing in becoming a citizen is definitely worth the process.

Sex Crimes And The Law Essay
The topic that we talked about in the class, Sex Crimes and the Law that really interested me
was the topic of rape. After having the guest speaker that was a Temple student really bothered
me and I thought about it for days. For starters, I think it is absolutely scary that she was rapped
on Temple University s campus, to be exact in Peabody hall and absolutely nothing was done to
help her. This is bothering me the most because I am a Temple student, this happened in her own
room, no one helped her, and her rapist is still out there. I feel horrible that no one even tried to
help and most people even made it seem like it was her fault by saying things such as you know
you wanted it . No one wants to be rapped and the victim should never be to blame. This poor girl
tried to kill herself multiple times. I believe that no one should go through this trauma alone or
even go through it at all. Since our guest speaker, I have gone on a binge of watching Law Order:
SVU and even through about becoming a special victim unit detective for my career. Another
reason that the topic of rapped bothered me was because just recently one of my friends came
out and said that she was raped by her boyfriend. No one even knew this happened until she
made it public on Facebook. For the longest time she was drawn back and really did not hang out
with the group and now I know why. The guest speaker really helped me to understand, just to be
there for her. When she wants to talk she will and not

Essay on Sir John Reith
Sir John Reith Sir John Reith was the first Director General of the BBC, and he had particularly
strong views on broadcasting as having a cultural and moral responsibility as a means of educating
and informing the masses. He once famously stated
It is occasionally indicated to us that we are apparently setting out to give the public what we think
they need and not what they want but few know what they want and very few what they need. In

The idea of the BBC as a public service meant that the provision should be public goods rather than
a private commodity (Curran, 2000). The funding of the service was based upon the license fee and
their agreement with parliament, and this was decided when it was felt that advertising could limit
the number of programmes they would be able to broadcast. They maintained the view that our
responsibility is to carry into the greatest possible number of homes, everything that is best in every
department of human knowledge, endeavour, or achievement (cited in Smith, 1998).
That the BBC kept a firm degree of independence from the government was always at the forefront
of Reith s aims, and the fact that it also gained a reputation for its impartiality meant that it came to
be, and to some extent, still is a respected institution throughout the world. Nowadays, the BBC still
pride themselves on being free of commercial interests and political bias (2002).
During his reign on the BBC throne, Reith came under much criticism on his views of
overestimating the mentality of the public, and providing a service that contained the matters that
he thought should be most important to society. He was often accused of being elitist in his
approach to programming policy. Many of the working class began to feel alienated by the

Native American Art And European Art
Native American culture was a great influence on newly introduced western art when settlers first
came to North America. Not only did Native Americans have their own style of art, sculpture,
basket weaving, and other fine arts. Their artistic styles helped influence some European art and
gave them a different outlook on not only art itself, but a brand new culture that they have not seen
before. This paper will talk about the different styles of Native American art and compare it to
European art styles and artist, as well as going into detail about how their culture influenced artistic
styles. There are many different types of Native American tribes located in the United States, and
there were even more when Europeans/settlers first arrived on the shores of the East coast. In
the Subarctic and Arctic area (Alaska, Canada, and south of Canada) the only known surviving
art is the Petrgoglyph site in Ontario. A lot of these art were painted hides from caribou and
moose which were used to make bright colored clothing, tipi s, and beaded boxes. When
Europeans finally met these Native Americans, moose hair tufting and floral glass beadwork
became popular in that area greatly as they were influenced by the Grey Nuns which was a
Canadian religious institute from the Roman Catholic Religious sisters founded in 1783. The Yup
ik of Alaska had a long tradition and remarkable style of carving masks for their rituals. These mask

Summary Of Sully And The Imitation Game
Intro
Even though Sully and The Imitation Game are set more than 50 years apart, they both examine
the phenomenon of surviving against all odds, and the fascination the public has with any such
hero. Both Eastwood and Tyldum develop this theme in presenting their characters as national
heroes. Eastwood s story of protagonist Chesley Sully Sullenberger depicts how ex army now
commercial pilot Sully ditches a plane in the Hudson river as an emergency landing, saving the
entire crew and passengers. The essence of this story is that not only is Sully cast as an instant
national hero, but ironically is revealed behind the scenes as somewhat of a rogue and accused of
endangering lives. The fascination of a hero, is not always shared by others. ... Show more content

Yet, Eastwood and Tyldum differ in their interpretation of what makes a national hero. Eastwood
initially represents Sully as a symbol of the average American male, through a range of
establishing camera angles, which perpetuates Sully as a calm mannered and methodical pilot.
Tyldum s use of shadows and lighting accentuates a half lit face of Alan Turing in a police
interrogation room, making him appear helpless and troubled. Furthermore, this half lit lighting of
his face symbolises that there is another side to Alan, where he is a prisoner inside himself, and
now his sexuality, later revealed to the police. Sully is constructed as a reserved man who believes
that I am not a hero , his actions later dubbed the miracle of the Hudson . Unlike Eastwood, Tyldum
s narrator is identifiable only through thought and action. While the text is primarily first person
showing the accomplishments and setbacks of Alan Turing faces and his team, it frameshifted
forward after the war and backwards to his childhood. The narrator Alan Turing occasionally shifted
to 2nd person talking directly to the audience affording an insight into his motivations and concerns.
The narrator shares his dissatisfaction in his monotonous existence shown by are you paying

When treating a physical illness, the cause is typically identifiable and standard procedure

The Role Of Recidivism In Prisons
Routinely in the news are stories of ex convicts being arrested again, and sometimes for even more
serious crimes than they had been convicted for. Currently he overall recidivism rate for Oklahoma
Department of Corrections (ODOC) stands at 21 % (Oklahoma Department of Corrections, 2014).
The recidivism rate is calculated on the number of Oklahoma Inmates that reenter the corrections
department within three years of release. Faith based programs ministering within the prisonwalls,
and partnering with local churches to aid the convicted with reentry do make a difference
(Dodson, Cabage, Klenowski, 2011). The desired effect is not only a change in the life of the
offender, but for their children, and in turn can reduce crimein the community.
Indeed the overall recidivism rate is 21%, however the rate for offenders twenty five and younger

It is clear that the film is directed at young children and family viewers with the purpose of
educating the audience of ancient Greek mythology in a modernised, child friendly method.
This is clear in the portrayal of the gods in their common modern American apparel instead of
traditional Greek clothing(see appendix A and B). A further example of this is when Percy
Jackson uses the reflective back of an iPod for combat with Medusa, as it allowed him to view
her indirectly. In mythology, Perseus used the reflective shield of Athene for the same purpose.
The switching of the shield to an item of modern technology emphasizes the modification of
Greek myths in the film. Additionally, Hermes winged boots were portrayed as winged Converse
sneakers(See appendices C and D), given to Percy by Luke, demigod son of Hermes/Hermes
archetype. Converse sneakers are extremely popular in the most recent generations/children of the
modern day world, along with iPods, so the overall effect of this modernisation of mythology is that
no piece of equipment looks out of place. Moreover, since the mythology in this movie has been
modernised, it is a great way to entertainingly educate people about ancient Greek mythology. To
conclude, the target audiences of the film determined how it adapted and modernised mythology

Reforms in the Economic Espionage Act (EEA) of 1996
There are two important major reforms that the U.S. established, the Economic Espionage Act
(EEA) of 1996 and the Theft of Trade Secrets Act of 2012. The U.S. established the EEA of 1996
to protect companies with industrial espionage, theft of trade secrets, fraud, transfer of custody, and
penalties on offenses(ECONOMIC ESPIONAGE ACT OF 1996). The EEA of 1996 is an act that
makes theft or misappropriation of trade secretsa federal crime (LaMance). Activities that are
punishable under the EEA of 1996 if the person:
steals, or without authorization takes, carries away, or by deception obtains a trade secret without
authorization copies, downloads, uploads, alters, destroys, transmits, or conveys a trade secret,
receives, buys, or possesses a trade secret, knowing that the trade secret has been stolen or
obtained wrongfully attempts to do any of the aforementioned activities , attempts to commit
economic espionage are punishable under the same penalties. The EEA is particularly severe
with people or corporations who steal trade secrets in order to benefit foreign countries or foreign
agents (LaMance). Penalties under the EEA of 1996 if a person is found guilty can be fined up to

high performance torque control and thereby controlling the speed of induction motor. The
principle is based on simultaneous decoupling of stator flux and electromagnetic torque of AC
drive system. DTC drives use hysteresis comparators and they suffer from high torque ripple and
variable switching frequency problem. The proposed SVM based DTC reduces torque ripples.
The basis of the SVM DTC methodology is the calculation of the required voltage space vector to
compensate the flux and torque errors and its generation using the SVM at each sample period. The
performance of this method is demonstrated by simulation using MATLAB/Simulink software.
Simulation results presented in this paper show the torque, flux linkage and stator current ripple
decreases with the proposed SVM DTC algorithm. Keywords: Direct Torque Control, Space vector

Pros And Cons Of Blackberry
All Sabrina wanted to do was to live and she will do whatever it takes to survive. Although... That
was the hope of every other teenager in this place of extremely hideous beauty.
Watching one tribute after another go into the training center to show off their dominance and
strength in the training center was nerve racking, but nothing could even compare to what she felt
when the robotic voice finally got to her. By the time she gets to go inside of the room that
everyone has trained in for several days, many of the weaponry stations, as well as the ropes have
already been used.
She had already planned on what stations she would be going to before she entered the room. In
the games, everyone seems to believe that being aggressive and always ... Show more content on

She obviously spent too much time searching for the plants and dragging the berry bush out
instead of just plucking a few leaves and berries off the plant instead, but she wanted a larger visual
to display than just a few minute plant pieces.
The girl no one seems to care about clears her throat before speaking, stuttering slightly as she
begins to talks. Once again, all that she can hope for is that her flora knowledge will give her
somewhat of an OK score. T this is a b b blackberry p plant. She begins, taking a deep breath to

All you ll be m making is an infusion by pouring boiling water on the leaves and to let it steep for

Judith Slaying Holofernes
Judith Slaying Holofernes
Artemisia Gentileschi was not the first to paint Judith Slaying Holofernes. Her father had painted
Judith. Michelangelo, Botticelli and Caravaggio had painted Judith. Donatello had sculpted Judith.
But she was the first to interpret the story of Judith, in a time when women had few rights, as an
allegory for female dominance. In comparison with other contemporary versions, the composition,
dramatic style, and emotions of the characters present a violently feminist view that may have
stemmed from Gentileschi s own experiences. Judith Slaying Holofernes1, by Artemisia Gentileschi
, is an oil painting and was completed in 1620. It retells the Old Testament story of Judith, a Jewish
widow of noble rank. An ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Delilah was a beautiful Philistine who tricked Samson to achieve his ruin. Judith and Delilah both
used their beauty and intelligence against men, and were therefore both determined to be deceitful
and immoral. Judith came to be known as la belle dame sans merci, the beautiful lady without
mercy.
In Cellini s Perseus4, and Giambologna s The Rape of the Sabine Women5, violence towards
women was moralized and perceived as normal. As the antithesis of this attitude, the character and
deeds of Judith were viewed as subversive and offensive. Francesco di Lorenzo, herald of the
Signoria, asked to have Donatello s Judith6 removed from the front of the Palazzo Vecchio in 1504
on the grounds that Judith is an omen of evilВ… it is not proper that the woman should kill the
male.
Artists striving for any appearance of propriety created extremely feminine, quiet and bland
Judiths, perhaps to avoid the controversy Gentileschi wholeheartedly invited. Veronese s Judith7
(1570) is a perfect example of this. Her hair is immaculately braided and her skin a porcelain
white rivaling the delicate pearls around her neck. She gazes into the distance as she daintily
places the head of Holofernes in the bag her servant holds out for her. Simply put, Judith appears as
dead as the head she holds. She is devoid of emotion, intelligence and humanity. Again, she is
nothing but an allegory, a warning for proud and arrogant men.
Carlo Saraceni s Judith8 (1615) has a smiling Judith holding

How Did Julius Caesar Change
Augustus became Rome s first emperor after Rome changed from republic to empire after Julius
Caesar assassination. Julius Caesar is Augustus great uncle and adopted father. He shrewdly
combined military might, institution building and lawmaking to become Rome s sole ruler, laying
the foundations of the 200 year Pax Romana (Roman Peace) and an empire that lasted, in various
forms, for nearly 1,500 years (History.com).
He was born in 63 B.C. and even his adoption he was known as Octavian. At the age of 16
Octavius donned the toga because it was the Roman sign of manhood and was taking on
responsibilities through his family connections (History.com). Octavius went to modern day Spain
to fight alongside Caesar even though his shipwrecked, so he had to cross enemy territory to get
to Caesar. This act impressed Caesar most that Octavian was named heir and successor in Caesar s
will. At the age of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
and then he was granted the name Augustus. They say that Octavian his name changed to Augustus
because he was born in August, like his uncle Julius Caesar changed his name because he was born
in July. In a four year span Octavian secured his rule by using Cleopatra s seized treasure to pay
his soldiers to keep them happy and content, but mostly importantly having their loyalty. Also he
passed laws bring back the traditions of the Roman Republic to mollify the Rome s Senators and
ruling classes. Octavian worked to improve and beautify the city of Rome to make the people
happy and content. During his 40 years reign, Augustus nearly doubled the size of the empire,
adding territories in Europe and Asia Minor and securing alliances that gave him effective rule
from Britain to India (History.com). He also spent much of his time outside of Rome to
consolidate power in the provinces and instituting of system of taxation to integrate the empire s
reaches and goals. He also expanded Rome by updating the roads and by putting in a postal

  • 2. Essay about Jane Addams An American pragmatist and feminist, Hull House founder Jane Addams (1860 1935) came of age in time of increasing tensions and division between segments of the American society, a division that was reflected in debates about educational reform. In the midst of this diversity, Addams saw the profoundly interdependent nature of all social and political interaction, and she aligned her efforts to support, emphasize and increase this interdependence. Education was one of the ways she relied on to overcome class disparity, as well as to increase interaction between classes. In the same tone, she believed that the working class and capitalists were not warring classes, but part of the same democratic society. The character of American unions was predicted by Addams to be limited and disappointing. She supported the workers goals of a shorter workday, increased wages, better industrial and general education, and worker protection in the marketplace, but qualified her support when she wrote that the movement does not want to lose sight of the end in securing the means, nor assume success, nor even necessarily the beginnings of success, when these first aim are attained (Addams 62). Addams saw the definition of society as warring classes as one that damned society as a whole. The literal notion of brotherhood demanded a beginning of universal kinship: before this larger vision of life there can be no perception of sides and battle array (Addams 64). Labor unions became, in fact, the tools of capitalists by reducing their talks to single industry issues. Addams clearly did not support the Marxist vision of labor, although she frequently read writers adopting this perspective. In the last few years, the sexualization of breastfeeding has become a big issue. This is due to people see breast as sexual objects and think that women are being exhibitionist, and are doing it just to flaunt their breasts in public. The first artwork is by Mary Cassattand is titled MotherRose Nursing her Child. This painting was created in the 1900s and it depicts a woman breastfeeding her child. The second piece is a contemporary portrait created by Catherine Opie titled Self Portrait Nursing. The portrait depicts a modern mother also nursing her child. They capture the entire interaction to keep things fair. With today s advanced technology, police body cameras have proven to be very useful. They are crucial in putting an end to unnecessary police misconduct. In 2012, the Rialto Police Department in California implemented police body cameras and recorded the outcome. The results showed that the number of complaints filed against officers fell by 88 percent compared with the previous 12 months. Use of force by officers fell by almost 60 percent over the same period (Lovett). Without a doubt, police body cameras do the trick to prevent potentially dangerous situations from occurring. As William A. Farrar, the Rialto police chief once stated, When you put a camera on a police officer, they tend to behave a little better, follow the rules a little better. And if a citizen knows the officer is wearing a camera, chances are the citizen will behave a little better. I strongly agree with this statement because if the interaction between the officer and the citizen is being recorded, neither of the two will want to behave badly. The citizen knows that their bad behavior could result in consequences and the officer knows that their misconduct could result in punishment or even the loss of their job. The cameras record every detail that can be looked back on if there was a complaint filed against the officer that was wearing it. Clearly, police body ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 24. Clinical Reasoning Model Essay Incorporating theory into practice is very important aspect in nursing profession. Nurses employ analytical thinking and reasoning to evaluate health assessments and physical examinations. Core essences of this concept include cognition, metacognition and discipline specific knowledge (Simmons, B. 2010). The clinical reasoning model aids nurses to make clinical judgments. In the scenario of Mrs Alice Palmer, numerous investigation where taken and due to limited information more subjective data was needed as well as objective data had to be monitored constantly. Effective clinical reasoning depends upon the nurse s ability to collect the right cues and to take the right action for the right patient at the right time and for the right reason (Levett Jones, Hoffman,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The application of critical thinking and clinical reasoning are crucial fundamentals in everyday life of nurse s clinical practice. Like most skills, the more the nurses train, the more natural and easier it becomes. Encouraging comparisons with similar presentations help learners widen their differential diagnosis (Pinnock, R., Welch, P. 2014). Critical thinking is a purposeful, goal directed thinking process that strives to problem solve patient care issues through the use of clinical reasoning (Estes, M., Calleja, P., Theobald, K., Harvey, T. 2016). Clinical reasoning whereas is a disciplined, creative and reflective approach used together with critical thinking to establish potential strategies to assist patients in reaching their desired health goals (Estes, M., Calleja, P., Theobald, K., Harvey, T. 2016). Both these skills are vital and failure to grasp and master these abilities result in adverse patient outcomes such as improper patient care, incorrect diagnose and inappropriate treatment. • 25. Epigenetic Modifications on Histones Epigenetic modifications on histones and DNA exercise precise regulation of gene expression, and thus have a profound influence on cellular differentiation and function. The most widely studied modification on DNA is 5 methylcytosine (5mC) that frequently occurs in a CpG dinucleotide context. Initially, the de novo DNAmethyltransferase (Dnmt) enzymes Dnmt3a and 3b mediate the transfer of the methyl group to cytosine, while the maintenance Dnmt1 ensures subsequent propagation of this mark through cell replication cycles. Because of prominent roles in gene repression, retro element silencing, X chromosome inactivation and gene imprinting, 5mC was initially thought to be irreversible. Thanks to burgeoning evidence, it is now clear that the methylcytosine can be removed through a number of mechanisms. Passive demethylation is proposed to remove 5mC over several cell replication cycles, through exclusion of the maintenance machinery from the replication fork. Active demethylation on the other hand constitutes removal of 5mC through enzymatic hydrolysis. The discovery of Ten Eleven Transclocation (TET) dioxygenase proteins was revolutionary. The TET proteins catalyze hydroxylation of 5mC to 5hmC, and conversion of 5hmC to 5 carboxylcytosine and finally to 5 formylcytosine. These 5mC derivatives enter the base excision repair pathway (BER), resulting in replacement of the methylcytosine with an unmodified cytosine. Second, although the role of deaminases is debated, these enzymes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

After having the guest speaker that was a Temple student really bothered me and I thought about it for days. For starters, I think it is absolutely scary that she was rapped on Temple University s campus, to be exact in Peabody hall and absolutely nothing was done to help her. This is bothering me the most because I am a Temple student, this happened in her own room, no one helped her, and her rapist is still out there. I feel horrible that no one even tried to help and most people even made it seem like it was her fault by saying things such as you know you wanted it . No one wants to be rapped and the victim should never be to blame. This poor girl tried to kill herself multiple times. I believe that no one should go through this trauma alone or even go through it at all. Since our guest speaker, I have gone on a binge of watching Law Order: SVU and even through about becoming a special victim unit detective for my career. Another reason that the topic of rapped bothered me was because just recently one of my friends came out and said that she was raped by her boyfriend. No one even knew this happened until she made it public on Facebook. For the longest time she was drawn back and really did not hang out with the group and now I know why. The funding of the service was based upon the license fee and their agreement with parliament, and this was decided when it was felt that advertising could limit the number of programmes they would be able to broadcast. They maintained the view that our responsibility is to carry into the greatest possible number of homes, everything that is best in every department of human knowledge, endeavour, or achievement (cited in Smith, 1998). That the BBC kept a firm degree of independence from the government was always at the forefront of Reith s aims, and the fact that it also gained a reputation for its impartiality meant that it came to be, and to some extent, still is a respected institution throughout the world. A further example of this is when Percy Jackson uses the reflective back of an iPod for combat with Medusa, as it allowed him to view her indirectly. Chatterji Professor Head Electrical Engineering NITTTR Chandigarh, India Abstract This paper proposes direct torque control of induction motor simulation using conventional method and space vector pulse width modulation technique for ripple reduction. Direct Torque Control is a control technique used in AC drive systems to obtain high performance torque control and thereby controlling the speed of induction motor. The principle is based on simultaneous decoupling of stator flux and electromagnetic torque of AC drive system. DTC drives use hysteresis comparators and they suffer from high torque ripple and variable switching frequency problem. The proposed SVM based DTC reduces torque ripples. The basis of the SVM DTC methodology is the calculation of the required voltage space vector to compensate the flux and torque errors and its generation using the SVM at each sample period. The performance of this method is demonstrated by simulation using MATLAB/Simulink software. Simulation results presented in this paper show the torque, flux linkage and stator current ripple decreases with the proposed SVM DTC algorithm.
