This document summarizes research from various sources on different art styles for an induction project. It discusses Optical Art, De Stijl, and Pop Art. For Pop Art, it provides details on its emergence in the 1950s in the UK and US, how it challenged fine art traditions by using popular culture imagery, and relevant artists like Peter Blake and Andy Warhol. Examples of Peter Blake's work customizing portraits are described. Books on Pop Art and the artist Jason Mercier are also summarized.
The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

2. Task 1 - Research
• OP ART
• Short for optical art, uses optical illusions
• Associated artists – Victor Vasarely, Bridget Riley
• Better known pieces often use black and white
• They aim to give impressions of movement, vibration, hidden images and warping
• DE STIJL
• Founded in 1917 by two artists – Piet Mondrian & Theo van doesburg
• De Stijl means style in dutch
• The magazine for De Stijl was a vehicle for Mondrian's ideas on art.
• POP ART
• Emerged in UK & US during mid to late 50s
• Challenged fine art traditions
• Uses images from popular 7 mass culture, such as advertising and comics
• Relevant artists – Peter Blake, Andy Warhal.

3. Task 1 – Research – Web source
• Pop art emerged in the United Kingdom and the United states in
the mid 1950s. Pop art uses imagery from popular mass culture.
Pop art uses objects seen in advertisements and comic books. It
uses a large amount of bright solid colours to give an abstract
gimmicky look to the finished product.
• This is a piece of art by Sir Peter Blake, this piece is showing a
customised portrait of model Marilyn Monroe, this piece shows
her in a different way than we are used to, she has unusual
coloured facial features such as dark red lips, pink and shadowed
skin, bright yellow hair and bright turquoise eyes. The artist has
also made the background a bright orange. These features make
the picture stand out because the artist has taken a well known
iconic image and made it into his own unique style.

4. Task 1 – Research – Web source
• This is a piece of art by Sir Peter Blake, this
piece is showing a customised art piece of his
own name, this art piece shows Peter Blake's
name in his own pop art style, he has used
his own limited range of colours that he has
used in his past products. The artist has also
fitted his name in front of shapes of various
colours. He has also used repetition of
different flags that represent different
countries and communities such as the
French and the LGBT flags.

5. Task 1 – Research – Book source
• Pop Art Book by black dog productions is a book that
shows work by various artists of the pop art movement,
it shows how the movement began with a group of
independent artists from journalism architects and
writers who, met regularly.
• In this book the different artists who did pop art as a
career became very iconic artists. In the book there is a
design at the very beginning of the introduction which
shows 2 people who were cut out of another black and
white picture and printed into a picture of a living room.
This caught my eye because of how clever it looks by
taking an object from an image and placing it into
another.

6. Task 1 – Research – Book source
• Pop trash is a book showcasing the art of Jason Mercier,
in this book it shows quotes of what inspired and
helped Jason to create these designs. The reason I
chose to research the art of Jason Mercier is because his
art is mainly portraits and he uses a various selection of
colours. The effect he uses in his portraits are less comic
like than other artists pop art such as Peter Blake who I
presume was inspired by the comic like pictures. Jason
used a sort of watercolour effect, this made his portraits
look highly contrasted and older than other pop art
designs.

7. Task 2a – Idea Generation [individual]
I have added the images in the slide above for my individual idea generation because I really like how these specific images look,
the style of these images give me an effect of a mix between 1950s and 80s, this is what effect I would like my product to give
across, I really liked how each artists use repetition of similar colors in each of their products, these are also the type of colors I
would like my product to have. The main element that all of these images have are the uses of famous bands, characters,
musicians and celebrities. I would like to make my product on a famous celebrity or iconic movie character.
8. Task 2a – Idea Generation [group]
• The font styles I would use are texts that have been in comics, i want
to make my design like traditional pop art products, they all use fonts
used in comic books and comic films, the fonts I would like to use are
called “adventure” and “badaboom”
• These specific fonts are most commonly used in comic films, books
and original pop art designs
9. Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule
Session Activity Who is responsible
Day 1 On the first day we discussed the different art styles in lesson and wrote
down some notes for our research. we started researching the different arts
online and we had to decide which style we were going to make our posters,
I chose pop art.
Day 2 On day 2 I began my planning, I had a look at different images to give me an
idea on what I wanted my project to look like.
Day 3 On day 3 I started my production, I had 2 poster ideas in mind, I decided to
go with one idea but I eventually decided it was not as good as I was hoping
it to be.
Day 4 On day 4 I tried to finish my first poster idea but I decided it was best to start
again from scratch with my other poster idea, I chose to turn a picture of
Tommy Shelby into a range of lots of colours.
Day 5 on day 5 I decided to make 3 versions of the colourful Tommy Shelby picture
and mix up the colours in each one, I also added my text with the name of
the exhibition in and also the date.
Day 6 on day 6 I had finished my poster, I then moved onto the evaluation to
explain how I made my poster and how the planning and research helped
me.

10. Task 2b – Action Plan/Schedule
3.1
• Add notes here on how you stuck to your plan/had to change your
plan and why
• I had to change my planning because I was not happy with how my
first attempt came out, it didn’t seem as good as I thought It was
going to be. I quickly changed my planning and went with my
secondary option for my poster.
11. Task 2c – Planning
• Use these slides to show your planning of your products, think about
structure and the components for each product [evidence for this
may include storyboards, flat plans, sketches, etc]
3.2
12. Task 4 – Production/Final Products
• Include a link to your blog where you have posted this PP and your
final products – the post on your blog should be titled ‘Induction
Week Project’
3.2
3.4
13. Task 5 – Evaluation – Problem Solving
• Describe three problems you faced in your project and how you solved these
• 1 – one problem I faced when creating my project was choosing the right idea to
stick with, I didn’t have a clear idea on what I wanted to create. I solved this
problem by starting with one idea and I then moved on to the other idea I had if I
didn’t think it was what I wanted to do.
• 2 – another problem I faced when I was creating my project was choosing the
right book to get ideas from in the L2 library, I solved this problem by going to the
library staff and asking where I can find the books suited to my project.
• 3 – another problem I faced when I was creating my project was giving my photo
a cartoon looking effect, I solved this by googling some photoshop tips. This
helped me create my project majorly.
3.3
14. Task 5 – Evaluation – Working with others
• Choose three aspects of your production where you worked well with your team
and this benefited the project
• 1 - one aspect where I worked well with my team was when we were discussing
which task we had to do, it did not take long for us to agree on which part we
were going to take in this project, whether it be acting, filming and editing.
• 2 - another aspect where I worked well with my team was deciding on the scenes
we were going to film, we worked well with the storyboard and get through the
filming at a quick time.
• 3 - another aspect that we all worked well on together was deciding which film
we were going to show to the class, as a group we discussed it and their wasn’t
anything bad said about either of our own 3 short films, we came to a decision on
who’s film we wanted to show easily.
1.2b
15. Task 5 – Evaluation - Feedback
• Discuss the feedback you received from your tutor during the project
and how you used this to improve the project
• I struggled to choose between the two projects I wanted to do, I did
start one at the beginning but I ended up switching because I did not
think it looked as good as I was hoping it to look, I talked to my tutor
about this and he said to try the other idea I had and see how it is.
The second project came out well and my notetaker and tutor agreed
that this was the better choice to chooses from the two. During
creating my second choice project my tutor said I should mix with
more colours to make it stand out more, he also gave me some tips
on what font and text I could use.
3.5
16. Task 5 – Evaluation – Active Engagement
• Define active engagement in your studies and briefly explain how you
used it in this project
• We used active engagement by all three of us discussing what would
be the best rout to take whilst creating this short film, we discussed
scenes together, the script for the scenes, the camera angles and
even the editing style, these things helped us all bring this project
together and to be a successful short film.
1.2a
17. Task 5 – Evaluation
Accessing and storing information
• Explain where the books/resources are for your area in the LC
• The books and resources are on the 1st floor learning centre
• Explain how to take a book/resource out of the LC
• You choose the book you want to take and you go to the front desk by
the learning centre exit and book it out.
2.1
18. Task 5 – Evaluation
Accessing and storing information
• Explain where to store electronic information on the college network
• You store electronic information onto your HDrive, you can find this
on the york college website, you go to student options and you can
see an option where it says “your user area” click this and it will take
you to the HDrive.
• Explain where you upload work when it is completed
• When you finish your work you upload it onto your blog page, you
also email it to the tutor so they can give you feedback.
2.1
19. Task 6 - How do you learn best?
• Explain some of the ways you think you learn best [refer to the VAK
questionnaire results in tutorial]:
• I learn best when working by making notes of things said in my class, this
helps me remember important things I need to learn if I forget, I also like to
take short breaks when studying because I feel it stops me from getting too
tired because then I’ll be able to work more efficiently.
• I learn best by using computers, I tend to make too much mistakes and may
take even longer to finish my tasks if I was writing on paper. Using a
computer allows me to check my spelling and have a more organised
workspace.
• I also learn best by highlighting important information in different colours,
the colours help me enjoy the learning more because it wouldn’t make it
seem as tiring as it would without colours.
1.1
20. Task 6 - How do you learn best?
• What makes it hard for you to study?
• What makes it hard for me to study is that I am easily distracted, if someone opposite me
is having a conversation and is also talking to me it tends to pull me away from my work.
• Completing timed tasks is a struggle for me most times, I find this hard to study because I
tend to have a lot of technical problems and occasionally forget to save my work
progress.
• What strategies do you think would benefit your studies?
• The thing that would benefit my struggles are not to be so easily drawn into
conversations that can affect my workload, to move over to a different computer if it gets
too distracting.
• To be reminded by a member of staff to tell me to save my work will be a huge benefit
on my studies, this will allow me to get through different set tasks at a quicker rate.
