TMJ dislocation typically occurs after extreme mouth opening during activities like eating or yawning, and results in painful immobilization of the jaw in an open position. The condyle is displaced from the fossa in front of the articular eminence, and examination reveals spasming muscles of mastication as well as an inability to close the mouth and excessive salivation. Treatment focuses on manually relocating the condyle back into the fossa.
