2. Definition
• Clause is a group of related words that contains at least one
subject and one verb and is used as a sentence and a part of a
sentence. All sentences are made up of clauses.
• When clause has complete meaning on its own,it can be used
as a sentence. But when it has incomplete meaning, it is used
as a part of sentence .
• Ex.
• 1.He is a news reporter(as a sentence )
• 2. when he went to Puna( as a part of a sentence)
3. SENTENCE
A sentence is a group of words which makes
complete sense .

4. SUBJECT AND PREDICATE
• The part of a sentence which names the person or thing that we
talk about is called the subject.
• The part which contains a verb and tells something about the
subject is called the predicate.
• Ex.
1. Kangaroos(sub) live in grassland areas.(predicate)
2. The child (sub)cried.(predicate)

2. Dependent Clause
6. INDEPENDENT CLAUSE
• A group of words that can stand on its own as a sentence: it has
a subject a verb and is a complete thought.
Ex.
• 1.She works there.
• 2.I was attending the conference.
7. DEPENDENT CLAUSE
• A group of words that contains a subject and a verb but, it is not a
complete thought. Because it is not a complete thought ,a dependent
clause can not stand as its own as a sentence.
• Because I woke up late this morning …(so what happened )
• When she went there…(so what happened )
• And Rita called me….(for what)
• So she scolds me….(for what)

clause from the given sentence.
1. Though he was ill he attended classes.
2. He got up and walk away.
3. The child cried when the doctor appeared.
4. Keep silence or you will be punished.
5. It was too dark to go on,so we camped there.

10. Subordinating Conjunction
(joining words)
Dependent clause connects to an independent clause by using
subordinating conjunction.
The subordinating conjunction introduces dependent clauses.
It can be said as connecters.
ex. and,if,but,or,nor,yet,for,after, as, because, before,
if,once, since, that, though, until, unless, where and while.etc.
11. • Underline the main clause and enclose the subordinate clause in
brackets
a. Kavita broke her glasses when she fell off her bike.
b. We arrived after the movie started.
c. The fans in the stadium were quiet while the batsmen batted.
d. When the smoke cleared, we saw the charred remains of the
building.
e. Shah Rukh Khan waved as he entered the studio.
f. He wiped his hands after washing them with soap.
