Organic compounds can be classified into two main categories: acyclic or open-chain compounds and cyclic or closed-chain compounds. Acyclic compounds have carbon atoms arranged in an open chain that can be straight or branched, while cyclic compounds contain one or more closed rings of carbon atoms with or without other atoms. Cyclic compounds are further divided into homocyclic compounds containing only carbon in their rings and heterocyclic compounds containing one or more heteroatoms in addition to carbon in the rings.
