The Visual Recognition Of Image Patterns
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
1.1. Background to the Study
As a scientific discipline, computer vision is concerned with the extraction of information from
images to be employed in a decision making process. The image data can take many forms, such as
video sequences, still images, digitized maps, diagrams and sketches. These images may be in colour
format, grey scale or in binary format. The common approach is to extract characteristic features from
the image either in the spatial domain or in some suitable transform domain. Whether the goal is
classification or recognition, a measure of similarity or distance must be formulated and the success
rate of the system evaluated. Some of the application areas of computer vision are:
1.1.1. Robotics
The visual recognition of image patterns is a fundamental human attribute that uses the eye as a sensor
and dedicated parts of the brain as the decision making processor. The visual recognition enables
humans to perform a variety of tasks such as target identification, ease of movement, handling tools,
communication among others. Advances in sensing and visual perception techniques have enabled
some of these attributes to be transferred to robots. For example, identification of colour is a useful
asset in a robot in an industrial automation process that involves sorting. [1], [2], [3]
1.1.2. Industrial Inspection
Industrial inspection is an area in which pattern recognition is of importance. A pattern recognition
system captures images

Essay on Envy and Beauty in Snow White
Envy, Beauty, and Snow White Few people can grow up within today s society without knowing the
tale of Snow White. From the Grimm Brothers to Disney, it has been told and retold to children
throughout the ages. However, what is often overlooked are the true meanings within the story.
Fairytales typically have underlying messages that can be found written between the lines, generally in
terms of the key themes. Snow White discusses the themes of envy and beauty, and shows how
humans obsessions can lead to their own downfall as well as the harm of others. When focusing on the
relationship between Snow White and her step mother the Queen, it is evident that the combination of
these two themes results in a power struggle in which beauty ... Show more content on

Trina Schart Hyman reiterates this point in her analysis of story, particularly in examining the Queen,
where the ?only power was her beauty. She didn?t think about [Snow White] as a person. She hated
only what Snow White symbolized, which was youth and the power and beauty of youth? (Haase,
2003). It is interesting to note that when the Queen receives Snow White?s heart, she eats it. ?And [the
heart] was salted and cooked and the wicked woman ate it up, thinking that there was an end of Snow
White? (Grimm and Grimm 168). This is a remnant of a primitive cannibalistic belief that one
receives power and characters through what is consumed. By devouring what she is told to be Snow
White?s heart, the Queen believes she is capturing Snow White?s beauty and power within herself
(Sale, 1979). These instances show that the Queen was driven to act by her envy of Snow White?s
beauty, which was said to be more beautiful than her own. As she saw Snow White?s beauty as a
threat to her own (and through it, her power), she saw the need to eliminate Snow White completely.
In consuming Snow White?s heart not only is she celebrating her triumph over Snow White, but she is
reinforcing her own beauty and vitality. However, as those who are familiar with the story know, this
was not the end of Snow White. When the Queen finds out Snow White escapes death from the
huntsman and ends up living with seven dwarfs, she still considered Snow White a

There Have Been Numerous Historical Evidences Shown About
There have been numerous historical evidences shown about the Pre colonial history of Black
kingdoms in Africa. Many historians have concluded that the people that inhabit Pre colonial Africa
were anthropologically Black. However, there has been so much controversy and misconception about
the ethnicity of ancient Egyptians by many historians. The controversy is due to many ethnocentric
historians and anthropologists attributing the development of the Egyptian civilization to the
Caucasian people. Dr. Herbert J. Foster, historian from Staten Island Community College, argues that
significant amounts of people inhabiting Egypt were black; they were major contributors to the
development of the Egyptian civilization. Dr. Herbert utilizes ... Show more content on

There were many quotes throughout the article by anthropologists that echoed the sentiment that it
was the Hamites who settled and helped develop Egypt. One notable anthropologist that Dr. Herbert
wrote about was C. G. Seligman. Seligman solidified the new Hamitic Hypothesis by praising the
success and accomplishments that happened in Africa and Egypt to the Caucasian Hamites. Dr.
Herbert then noted that Seligman s theory, still persists in the writings of numerous anthropologists
and historians. Dr. Herbert was able to use evidences from different fields such as anthropology and
history to understand the controversy surrounding the Hamitic Hypothesis.
Dr. Herbert uses scientific, archeological and historical evidences to argue that the ethnicity of
Egyptians was black; and that they were major contributors to the Egyptian civilization. Historical
evidence was used to support the argument that there were blacks contributing to the expansion of
Egypt. Dr. Herbert quoted an author of African History, Basil Davidson, who argued, that the ancient
ancestors of present day Africa were an important and perhaps dominant element among the people
who fathered early Egyptian civilization. Herbert used scientific studies to help support the claim that
Davidson made. Dr. Herbert first talked about the study done in 1905 by Randall McIver and
Thompson who surveyed ancient Egyptian skulls. Randall McIver and Thompson

Nazi Aryan Race Theory Essay
In the Holocaust not only were the Jews killed so were a group of people called the Gypsies. 1 million
to 4 million Gypsies were killed in the worst ways with no remorse. But why would this happen to the
Gypsies if they didn t do anything? They didn t consider the Gypsies Germans. The reason all this
started was because of a theory that the Germans made. Nazi Aryan Racial Theory is known as a racial
designation; Houston Stewart Chamberian was the first to use the term Aryan to mean the white race it
was the Aryans who invaded the conquered ancient India from the north. The Aryan Race Theory was
a way that Germans were segregated in many different ways. This started in the 1700s when scholars
discovered Sanskrit was closely related to the European ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Gypsies were also different because they didn t let their kids go to public schools. Or they didn t go to
local churches. Romany was also a group of people that were in tribes, not all the tribes were the same
they each had their own different costoms, beliefs, leaders, and dialects. The Germans started this
theory because they changed the word Aryan into a noun. Gypsies were the most effected because
even before the Nazis took over the government, they wanted to find a good reason why they should
eliminate the Gypsies wether they had the power or not. The Nazis found that calling the Gypsies
asocial elements and also making them irrelevant to normal society, could help in eliminating them.
Germans were also told that they would endangered the purity of Aryan blood and the public health.
But it all got worse when in 1920 they had changed the label of the Gypsies to worthless life. Later on
in 1928 when Weimar constitution was still ruling Germany, everyone had equal rights. But the
Germans had passed a law that all Gypsies were under permanent critical police observation.
Rehabilitation camps were the first places where Gypsies older than 16 would be placed, so they

Post-Civil War America and Policies
After the Civil War, which culminated in 1865, the government of United States needed to reunify
southern and northern states back together, and the only solution for that were reforms in South. The
new political developments began In 1863 when president Abraham Lincoln suggested Ten Percent
Plan which indicated that a southern state could be readmitted to the Union as soon as ten percent of
its voters asseverated the oath of allegiance to the Union. Lincoln ensured southerners that
government will protect their private property, but not their slaves. After Lincoln was assassinated on
April 14, 1865, the new President of United States continued following his Ten Percent Plan.
Also Lincoln proposed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, promulgated that all persons held as
slaves within any State, or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion
against United States, shall be then, thenceforward and forever free. Nevertheless, Emancipation
Proclamation did not end slavery in the states. Lincoln hoped to inspire all the slaves in the
Confederacy with the Proclamation. Especially to support the Union Cause and keep European
countries, in particular England and France, from politically giving the confession and military aid to
Confederacy.
Out of all the Era s in the in United States, Reconstruction was the one which consisted of many
values, leaders, and objectives. In 1864, two Radical Republicans, Senator of Ohio Benjamin Wade

Symbolism Of Water In Big Fish Essay
In Big Fish , Daniel Wallace utilizes water as a recurring theme to reveal that Edward Bloom truly
represents the book s title. The story of Big Fish has had a great deal of meaning in my life because I
was just in the First Stage production last spring which was a retelling of the 1998 tale. The novel Big
Fish revolves around Edward Bloom, a well known teller of tales, and his middle aged son William, a
pessimistic businessman who is out on a quest to find the true meaning of his father s massive stories.
Edward Bloom was to a sense a golden child, he remembers every man s name, he could run fast,
speak in front of crowds, and was a mighty charmer with the ladies. But the thing that William cannot
wrap his head around is why his father must always be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
William will soon come to realize that his father s stories were not far from the truth. He really did
tame a giant, he meets a so called mermaid and meets and marries the girl of his dreams, Sandra. The
object which I brought in, a water bottle, is used to signify the many water symbols in the novel.
Water could well be one of the most present and identifiable concepts in the Big Fish story line. I
believe the active motion symbolizes Edwards ambition to see every continent and meet everyone in
the world. I also found that it represents the quiet, steady personality of Will. Edward is somehow
always finding his way back to water throughout the novel. The first scene of the novel begins at the
banks of a river where Edward and Will are resting after a hike. He sets his feet in the water and
smiles, a smile that William proclaims he has never seen before. Edward then says this reminds me...
but never finishes his thought, leaving the reader hanging as to what the story would have been.
Another water reference was when Edward sees the beautiful women, the supposed mermaid, in the
water and saves her from a snake. This tale occurs in a river near his hometown of Ashland Alabama.

The Tale Of True Grit
Set in the American frontier in the latter half of the eighteenth century, the tale of True Grit reads like
the diary of a precocious, headstrong, and mature fourteen year old girl. Mattie Ross, the main
character, recruits the callous, no nonsense U.S. Marshal Rooster, Cogburn to aid her in tracking down
Tom Chaney, her father s killer. Cocky, Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, needs Cogburn to guide him through
Indian Territory because he too seeks justice, as well as a monetary reward, for capturing the same
outlaw. Mattie demonstrates her strength of will as well as her resourcefulness, as the troupe takes on
the unexpected in their adventurous wilderness journey. The three main characters; Mattie Ross,
Rooster Cogburn, and Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, all demonstrate true grit in some similar and some
dissimilar ways in both the 1968 novel by Charles Portis and the 2010 film adaptation by the Coen
brothers.
After the Civil War, American society began to move into a new direction and expand. The mid
western and southern states growth is by the production of cotton and tobacco, while the distribution
of alcohol begins to become prohibited across the nation. In the later 1800 s males and females gender
roles were very distinct at this point in history. However in our story, Mattie Ross bends the rules and
becomes a modern day feminist voice who insists on having her way. Throughout the film and the
novel this is a consistent character quality of hers. In the very beginning of the film, she

Paraphilic Behavior
I believe that there is no way to definitively explain how people become interested in certain sexual
desires, although an argument can be made for those who were sexually exploited as a child, which I
will also discuss. I think that people are constantly evolving, and as we change through the years, our
sexual interests and desires change as well. Things that we liked as children we have a tendency to
outgrow as adults, to expect that we will have the same desires at age 40 that we did at age 20 is naive.
Things we believe in and lifelong friends we have may be a constant in our lives, but most things have
a propensity to evolve. Therefore, you have to ask yourself why sexuality would not be one of the
things to evolve as well. People have long debated that most sexual preferences are ... Show more

may only engage in this behavior occasionally and may have many other sexual interests. I am leaning
toward one developing a paraphilia due to a habit they had early in life that may not have been of a
sexual nature but when being repeatedly associated with the activity they become sexually aroused
because it was pleasurable. On the other hand, exposure at an early age to inappropriate sexual
behavior a child will learn to mimic the behavior, they become conditioned to enjoy the behavior and
therefore see it as normal. Since they were deprived of normal sexual contact, they continue to seek
gratification through less acceptable ways. This differs from paraphilic behavior because it becomes a

The Defence Of Poesy By Sir Philip Sidney
Sir Philip Sidney argued for the positive value of imaginative literature in The Defence of Poesy, in
which he claimed that literature should teach and delight . The influence of Sidney s claim can be seen
in John Skelton s work The Bowge of Courte and Thomas Nashe s The Choise of Valentines . Skelton
s The Bowge of Court , has been described as a fifteenth century dream vision built on the model of
the morality play and The Choise of Valentines as an Ovidian erotic poem , which elaborates a tale of
impotence and erotic substitution. While both poems are rich in their differences, due to the satiric and
erotic genres, they share the similarity of belonging to a very specific time. By examining the origins d
interpreting Sidney s presentation of the phrase teach and delight , the ways in which Skelton and
Nashe s texts maintain Sidney s claim can be discussed. Skelton teaches through The Bowge of Court
, by employing allegory as a way to critique the court, and uses satire as a form of poetic council.
Nashe teaches in The Choise of Valentines by presenting his text and an example of originality and
satirising the idea of performance. Skelton delights in his text by using the symbol of the ship as an
ornament added to the truth of the poem. Nashe delights in his text by the freshness of language used
and the originality of his poetry.
Sidney uses the phrase teach and delight consistently throughout The Defence of Poesy, which he

Hegemonic Masculinity In Sports
The sports industry is one controlled by organizations that are large, powerful, and old. At times, the
public can have powerful effects on these behemoths, but these behemoths can also have powerful
effects on the public. The sports industry influences the next generation, and The presentation of sport
in the media tends to emphasize behaviors that include certain values, attitudes, and beliefs that mirror
the history of sport and maintain the status quo. (Woods 100) I will refer to this as a premise.
We start with the status quo of hegemonic masculinity. Without much argument, it can be said that
ideas power, dominance, and violence can be associated with sports. These characteristics are
traditionally considered masculine. (Woods 103) Therefore sports are associated with masculinity. In
addition to the idea that sports are masculine, there is a history of male domination of sport; ...male

the masculinity of sport creates an environment for sport media wherein male dominance is able to

Members of the Nations speak Iroquoian languages that are distinctly different from those of other
Iroquoian speakers. This suggests that while the different Iroquoian tribes had a common historical
and cultural origin, they diverged as peoples over a sufficiently long time that their languages became
different. Archaeological evidence shows that Iroquois ancestors lived in the Great Lakes region from
at least 1000 A.D.
After becoming united in the League, the Iroquois invaded the Ohio River Valley in present day
Kentucky to seek additional hunting grounds. According to one pre contact theory, it was the Iroquois
who, by about 1200, had pushed tribes of the Ohio River Valley, such as the Quapaw (Akansea) and
Ofo (Mosopelea) out of the region in a migration west of the Mississippi River. But, Robert La Salla
listed the Mosopelean among the Ohio Valley peoples defeated by the Iroquois in the early 1670s,
during the later Beaver Wars. By 1673, the Siouan speaking groups had settled in the Midwest,
establishing what became known as their historical territories. Just as the Siouan peoples were
displaced by the Iroquois, they displaced less powerful tribes whom they encountered, such as the
Osage, who moved further west.

Irregular Warfare Mindset Needed for Our Modern World Essay
Since World War II, there have been over 80 irregular conflicts, including civil and guerrilla wars,
rebellions or insurgencies. The United States has been involved in several of these conflicts, some of
which are still ongoing, such as the conflict in Somalia. The conflict in Somalia, widely seen as
unsuccessful, saw a significant change from the conventional mindset to one of irregular warfare.
While threats from conventional forces still exist in today s environment, irregular warfare has
become a mainstay across the globe.
The United States needs to adopt and maintain an irregular warfare mindset, above that of
conventional, to ensure adaptable economic, political and military capabilities in an ever evolving
global environment. In ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Backed by the international community, including the UN, the U.S. attempted to provide basic
services to the people of war torn Somalia. Although these stability operations ultimately failed, the
U.S. has been able to capitalize on the lessons learned from Somalia. Somalia greatly changed the way
the U.S. conducted irregular warfare activities, such as stability operations and two other significant
ones.
Counterinsurgency (COIN) and Counterterrorism (CT) operations have been used extensively in
Somalia since 1992, especially since the failed use of stability operations. While neither of these
operations has had success in creating a stable Somalia, both have been instrumental in keeping
Islamic militants in check, particularly those with ties to al Qaeda (i.e. al Shabaab). Fighting terrorist
organizations such as al Shabaab and al Qaeda have been dominated by irregular warfare, which has
spawned numerous military and academic studies regarding irregular warfare. In cases such as
Somalia, Afghanistan, and other global hotbeds for terrorism, the U.S. has refined the way irregular
warfare is conducted.

counterterrorism) have led front pages since Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan. COIN, in particular,
defines the way the U.S. approaches irregular warfare, but the U.S. is ultimately

Laboratory Summary Comparing a material s initial treatment and the microstructures that are formed
from different processes, an engineer can accurately understand why certain treated materials of the
same family can be stronger than another. In this experiment annealed and cold worked specimens of
AISI 1018 STEEL are used, along with a Hardness tester, a grinding and polishing process, and a

This can be confirmed by comparing data from the experiment to accepted data for non treated AISI
1018 steel. During the experiment, two metal specimens were tested on the hardness testing machine,
using the HRB scale. From these values the hardness and tensile strength of the specimens can be
calculated and compared. After this, the two specimens were put through a polishing process. This
process leaves the specimens with a mirror like finish. A 2% Nital solution, a combination of nitric
acid and methanol, is then put on the polished faces. The specimens are then ready to be viewed under
the microscope where the grain structures can be observed. The treatment these metals have
experienced should affect certain properties of their microstructure. It is expected that the fully
annealed specimen will be softer than the untreated specimen because larger grains are produced in
the annealing process, unlike that of the cold worked specimen. This specimen will be harder and have
a higher strength than the untreated specimen because the cold working makes the grains smaller and
more compact. There may be some error associated with the results obtained in this experiment due to
imperfections in material handling and flaws in the specimens, but it is expected that this experiment
accurately illustrates how the treatment process affects the properties of metals.

Spirit Empowered Living
9 September 16, 2015 Summary and Interaction of Celebration of Discipline by Richard J. Foster
In the beginning of Celebration of Discipline, Richard J. Foster undergoes a thorough explanation of
our ages most desperate need; deep people. He proclaims how our superficiality and lack of common
sense regarding spiritual life has crippled us and left us living in the surface rather than depts. He
mentions how we have gotten accustomed to relying on our own willpower ultimately not containing
the correct attitude or reasons for practicing the classical disciplines. Therefore, we lack the pieces of
our inward and outward life as believers of Christ. Foster ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This brings the second inward discipline, prayer. Prayer is mentioned as one of the most central
disciples due to its intimacy of conversation between us and god himself. Foster describes prayer as
our ability to ask for change in circumstances, to pray is to change (P.33). He explains how Jesus often
withdrew from the crowds to pray to his father. like so, we should withdraw from time to time. Our
disciplines can coincide just as fasting does with prayer; thus being the third discipline prescribed.
Fasting is the abstaining from food for scriptural purpose. (p.48) and is said to be seen as a desperate
measure for emergency. Foster goes deeper into how and why a Christian should fast, but mostly
focuses on its meaning of self control and its centrality being god. Foster s final inward discipline is
the practice of study. Study is the focus to our total transformation from our old selves. It is a specific
experience aimed to form Christian habits. With that, Foster breaks down study into four steps;
repetition, reflection, understanding, and experience which ingrain those habits. In the second part of
the book, Celebration of Discipline, Foster outlines the four outward disciplines. These being;
simplicity, solitude, submission, and service. Simplicity as foster states is an inward reality that results
in an outward life style. (p. 80) which is meant to live out. He says we should be

Capital Punishment in the Work of George Orwell, H.L....
Capital Punishment in the Work of George Orwell, H.L. Mencken, and Norman Mailer
Capital punishment in the essays by George Orwell, H.L. Mencken, and Norman Mailer was a
necessary evil to deter crime. These authors incorporated the use of alcohol or drugs as mind altering
chemicals to relieve the pressures of the characters involved in death due to capital punishment.
Chemicals such as drugs and alcohol can be used for the pleasure of relieving stress, a means to forget,
or a way to subdue personal beliefs as the authors have illustrated. The pleasure of relieving stress in
George Orwell s essay A Hanging was detailed by his thoughts written as one of the executioners. This
character drank alcohol to relieve ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The uses of mind altering chemicals, H.L. Mencken s essay Hangings I have Known illustrates the
repression of memory using a young journalist precisely eighteen years, ten months and sixteen days
old (pg 92) when he witnesses his first execution as a reporter. He narrates the inebriated state of the
sheriff whose responsibility it was to spring the trap . (pg 92) The sheriff s drinking was to diminish
mental anguish he put on himself to a point where he became virtually helpless, the other sheriffs
would help pull the trap, but the sheriff was quite unable to tie the knot, bind the candidate, or carry on
with the other duties under his responsibility . (pg 92) After the hangings the sheriff was assisted out
of the jail yard by his deputies, and departed at once for Atlantic City, where he dug in for a week of
nightmare (pg 92). The sheriff was written as a person not able to accept the act of capital punishment
or his memories so he attempts to suppress them with alcohol.
The final use of chemicals was by Gary Gilmore in Norman Mailer s essay Let s Do It to suppress his
personal beliefs. Unable to say anything profound to the warden due to the amount of

Meursault s Indifference in The Stranger, by Albert Camus
In The Stranger, Albert Camus allows the main character to tell the story in order to give the reader an
experience of his own. Obviously, with a novel also comes language, which Camus incorporates
cleverly as a way to indirectly illustrate Meursault s thoughts about certain situations. Although the
novel represents a postmodern setting, the author shifts the overall meaning. In The Stranger, Camus
applies a unique literary style as a power that deflects blame from Meursault, the antiheroic character.
In order to disclaim the fault of Meursault, Camus incorporates several instances in which he leaves a
greater sense of authority to nonliving objects, while further drawing attention away from the main
character. Based on the implication of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore, he covers the Arab s intentions when talking about the same blade that persists in
bringing Meursault pain. He describes the stabbing as a scorching blade [that] slashes at [his]
eyelashes and stabs at [his] stinging eyes (59). The moment that the blade brings itself to Meursault s
face and slashes at his eyelashes, of course, is the point at which Meursault acknowledges that
everything is beginning to reel. Finally, under the influence of the sea s fiery breath and the sun s
scorching attitude, Meursault admits that the trigger gave when reminiscing on the death of the Arab
(59). Not until after he blames the trigger for the mishap does he use first person to describe the
negative actions, as he shoots the Arab four more times. At this point, perhaps, he realizes his own
fault within the situation as he continues to set himself in place for the remainder of part one. The
simple sentences in The Stranger reveal Meursault s emotional detachment from society, while the
more complex sentences are assigned to objects with authority. Throughout the entire novel,
Meursault s simplicity and disinterest in the world can be identified with the incorporation of his
simple statements. Especially in this particular passage, Meursault finds it unimportant to challenge
himself in a way that makes sense. Although Meursault recognizes the sensibility of walking

Examples Of Lack Of Self Confidence In The Wizard Of Oz
In today s society, there are about 6.375 billion people affected by a lack of self confidence, in other
terms, this is about 85% of the world s current population of 7.5 billion people. Why does the majority
of the world s population suffer from a lack of self confidence? There is a simple answer to this
question, and it can be found in the book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum. Baum
through the use of 3 characters portrays the lack of self confidence. Baum uses the Scarecrow, the Tin
Woodman and the Lion prove that a person/character s own strengths go un noticed by him/her. The
way to reach these strengths would be through self confidence. The 85% of the world s population

It in fact was a possibility, allowing the rest of the travelers to climb the lion s back and make it across
the ditch. Once across this ditch the group encountered another ditch to cross, which was so large,
even the lion was unable to leap across. Realizing this the Scarecrow told the Tin Woodman to cut
down a large tree from the close by forest and asked the Lion to push it down towards the ditch once it
was cut. This created a bridge for not only the travelers to cross but also the dreaded Kalidahs. The
Kalidahs are dreaded beats that were ferocious and could kill the lion if they wanted to and turning
back the Lion realizes that there are two Kalidahs following them across the bridge. Once everyone

Hurricane Katrina Case Study
1. Did human activity contribute to the severity of the storm, or was it an entirely natural disaster?
Support your answer with evidence and citations. The severity of Hurricane Katrina was impacted
largely by the location of its landfall. The storm was well tracked by the National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The NOAA noted that the high pressure of the storm at
landfall, the strength of the system and shallow waters offshore all were contributing factors to the
severity of the storm. (Graumann, Houston, Lawrimore, Levinson, Lott, McCown, Stephens, Wuertz:
2005, pg 4). When the storm struck, however, it was found that those who were financially better off
were able to evacuate easier, leaving those in lower income areas to remain amidst the devastation.
Nearly a half million people were excluded from the cities, when FEMA camps were implemented as
a means to reconstruct public housing. (Smith, 2006). The human activity leading up to the storm,
including levees constructed on the shore as well as the NOAA announcement of a hurricane warning,
had been intended to protect the residents of Louisiana and Mississippi. Unfortunately, efforts to
prepare those who would be most devastated by the storm failed. The governmental response in the
wake of the storm greatly worsened the devastation of the storm. What is called glory seeking was the
government s way of encouraging the private sector to get involved with disaster relief. However, the

The Lemur and the Gibbon Essay
Where did we come from? A question that will always be asked by every human on this planet. Some
say that we are of God s creation and some say that we have gone through a long process called
evolution and that humans and apes share a single common ancestor. Here I am going to compare and
contrast between two of my favorite types of animals: The Lemur and the Gibbon. What is a Lemur?
Ask someone that question and you ll be surprised how silly the answer may be. From being a fruit to
a body part, it is sad how the general public does not know that the Lemur one of our oldest primates,
an order which includes monkeys, apes, and us humans. There are about 32 different types of lemurs
on our planet today. They originated from Madagascar, a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Some of them have rings on their tails and are called Ring Tailed Lemurs. They live mostly in trees
and are quadrupedal. They use their hands and tails to get from one tree to the other and they live in
groups from 3 to 20. And the female lemur is dominant. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;Lemurs are
known to be very intelligent. They are highly adaptable to our climate and conditions. They eat a lot
and try to get a bit fat before the harsh winter arrives. And they have a cool excellent sense of balance.
nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; But since humans arrived in Madagascar some 1,500 years ago they
have been endangered. Sixteen different species of lemurs have gone extinct because of habitat
destruction to hunting by humans. I personally think its very unfair because these gentle non
aggressive animals were their before humans and even before monkeys. Prosimians first appeared
about 55 million years ago while apes been around for only 35 million years. In 1987, World Wildlife
International declared that the lemurs are the most gravely endangered group of primates in the world.
nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; The Gibbon is a truly unique animal. Gibbons are anthropoids like
humans and gorillas. They look somewhat like the Lemur but it has special features that make it
different from the Lemur. nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp; nbsp;Gibbons apes come from Southeast Asia and

In this tragic tale, a young black woman grew up in a sexually, emotionally, and physically abusive
household without the support a stable adult. Precious grew up in the ghetto of Harlem, New York city

own daughter over his wife. In short, her mother s insecurities allowed her to be impregnated not once
but twice with her husband. While she was a mother she was also a target into bullying for her weight.
During all the abuse Precious felt a loss of control in her daily life. To put her mind at ease she
indulged in compulsive eating, and escaping into fantasy fascinations. These self destructive habits

Omnivore Research Paper
By nature, humans are omnivores. According to scientists, animals can either be herbivores (plant

scientific classification, humans are said to be omnivores. Humans can derive their energy and
nutrients from a diet consisting of plant and animal origin. For the body to be healthy, people need to
consume foods with high nutrient density. Food and beverages supply nutrients, classified into

Vegetarian diets are said to be comprised of plant source and some animal products, but excludes all
red meats. Beezhold, Bonnie, Cynthia Radnitz, Amy Rinne, and Julie DiMatteo confirm that plant
based diets have an impact on adult s moods and lower anxiety in their report written in the article
Vegans Report Less Stress and Anxiety than Omnivores. The authors report a study carried out to
investigate the mood and factors that influence mood of Vegans, Vegetarians, and Omnivores. A total
of 620 adults mood, diet, and lifestyle factors were surveyed in an online sample. The number of
Vegans were 283, vegetarians were 109, omnivores were 228 and 78.5 percent of the volunteers were
women. The authors record that vegetarian males and vegan males were found to have lower anxiety
scores than omnivore males. Lower anxiety and lower stress were found to be related to a vegan diet
and lower intake of sweets. The authors assert that a strict plant based diet may not have a negative
impact on mood, rather reducing animal based diets may promote mood improvement. They conclude
by saying that eating more of plant based diets with lower intake of animal products might be
associated with better mental health. According to this research, it is obvious that vegetarianism is
associated with lower anxiety and mood

Theme Of Autolycus In The Winter s Tale
Shakespeare, in The Winter s Tale, invents Autolycus as an implementer of satire, playing a
fundamental function in the context of the play as the counterpoint, however playful, to the first act.
Furthermore, Autolycus serves as the chief instrument for the introduction and advancement of
comedic themes and acts of trickery as a rogue, thief and master of masks. Therefore, as the
implementer of satire, Autolycus furnishes as a crucial counterpoint to the play, which warrants his
significance in relation to the play in its entity. As the passage of time marks its quick ascent, the
sudden shift from winter to spring and youth into age is marked by the passage of Autolycus as he
enters the play singing. When the daffodils begin to peer, with heigh, the doxy over the dale, why, then
comes in the sweet o the year, for the red blood reigns in the winter pale (Act IV, Scene 3, Lines 1 4).
Autolycus not only signals the shift from tragedy to comedy, but emphasizes the juxtaposition from
winter to spring; a time of rebirth. Therefore, Autolycus serves as the epitome of transformations as
the play sharply diverges from the common, albeit serious, tales of tragedy to a shift of miraculous
harmony. Moreover, Autolycus continues to contradict the social hierarchies, according to historical
sources, placed during Shakespearean period as well as the characters. Autolycus stated, I have served

Reflection On The Field Of Organizational Psychology
Reflection Before the start of this class I had little experience with research and little knowledge
regarding the components of each research approach. Additionally, I had preconceived notions that
qualitative research would be my approach of choice because I assumed it was an easier choice so to
speak because it did not include numeric data. This course has definitely changed my mind on being
open to the other approaches. I have learned that quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods
approach all involve a lot of time and effort when it comes to planning, executing, and analyzing.
Another thing I learned is that each approach is not interchangeable.
Just because an individual is more comfortable with one approach over another, does not mean that
approach is most suitable for the issue being researched. Even though I learned a lot from this
Research Theory course, there are still opportunities for improvement in certain areas. The areas I
would like to see improvement is: knowledge of theories in the field of organizational psychology,
becoming more fluent in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approach, improvement in
writing skills, planning and timing just to name a few. According to Banna, knowing theories by
researchers who have paved the way in a specific field of study will be an important part of the
research process(Laureate Education, Inc., 2009b). This is an area that will be beneficial to me moving
forward in the research process because it gives

Comparing Islam And Christianity And Islam
Every religion consists of separate beliefs that determine how they view the world and how they
approach situations. Although some beliefs may overlap, there are still details that will be different
due to preconceptions and fundamental beliefs. Comparing and contrasting Islam and Christianity, is a
wonderful example of these differences based on fundamental beliefs. This concept is explored in the
rest of this work through critically accessing Christian and Muslim views on the question of origin,
identity, meaning and purpose, morality, and destiny. Islam and Christianity are in agreement that the
origin of both living things and man were created by God himself. The Qu ran states that Allah (God)
created the heavens and earth in six ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This means that man is above animals, but they are meant to respect and care for them. Muslims are
taught that animals should be respected and they should only slaughter them in a proper Islamic
manner (Abdul Rahman, 2004). It is also explained to them that they may only bring harm to animals
that may be eaten, or else they must seek forgiveness from Allah (Abdul Rahman, 2004). In the bible,
it is explained that man was created above the earth and animals, but it is importance that man
appreciates his creations (Gutierrez, 2014). It is inferred that Christians should be activists for animal
rights, but it is not clearly stated (Weider Gutierrez, 2014). Although Christians are meant to do good
and treat Gods creations well, they believe they are destined to stray from this because of the original
sin of man (Nigosian, 2004;2003). Therefore, many Christians explain that being human means that
you are an imperfect sinner. Muslims do not share this idea. Islam explains that sin is not innate and
that individuals have the ability to either do good or bad and that it is their responsibility to make the
right decision (Nigosian, 2004;2003). Their ideas of predestined sin, lead to many fundamental
differences in beliefs. Although both religions state that humans were created to be rulers of earth,
they have differing beliefs on man s capability of doing good and different expectations. Allah accepts

I cannot remember the first time I read Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. I read it at about
age ten, and I have lost count of how many times I read it since. It was a period in my life when

differentiate one diagnosis from the other as well as the distinguishing mental disorder, from the
situation, such as mental distress. DSM is not visibly clear on how experiences and behaviors cited
within the diagnostic criterion justifiably can consider as substantiation of mental disorder as
distinctive from rejoinders to life events (Crowe,

  • 2. The Visual Recognition Of Image Patterns CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1. Background to the Study As a scientific discipline, computer vision is concerned with the extraction of information from images to be employed in a decision making process. The image data can take many forms, such as video sequences, still images, digitized maps, diagrams and sketches. These images may be in colour format, grey scale or in binary format. The common approach is to extract characteristic features from the image either in the spatial domain or in some suitable transform domain. Whether the goal is classification or recognition, a measure of similarity or distance must be formulated and the success rate of the system evaluated. Some of the application areas of computer vision are: 1.1.1. Robotics The visual recognition of image patterns is a fundamental human attribute that uses the eye as a sensor and dedicated parts of the brain as the decision making processor. The visual recognition enables humans to perform a variety of tasks such as target identification, ease of movement, handling tools, communication among others. Advances in sensing and visual perception techniques have enabled some of these attributes to be transferred to robots. For example, identification of colour is a useful asset in a robot in an industrial automation process that involves sorting. [1], [2], [3] 1.1.2. Industrial Inspection Industrial inspection is an area in which pattern recognition is of importance. A pattern recognition system captures images ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Essay on Envy and Beauty in Snow White Envy, Beauty, and Snow White Few people can grow up within today s society without knowing the tale of Snow White. From the Grimm Brothers to Disney, it has been told and retold to children throughout the ages. However, what is often overlooked are the true meanings within the story. Fairytales typically have underlying messages that can be found written between the lines, generally in terms of the key themes. Snow White discusses the themes of envy and beauty, and shows how humans obsessions can lead to their own downfall as well as the harm of others. When focusing on the relationship between Snow White and her step mother the Queen, it is evident that the combination of these two themes results in a power struggle in which beauty ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Trina Schart Hyman reiterates this point in her analysis of story, particularly in examining the Queen, where the ?only power was her beauty. She didn?t think about [Snow White] as a person. She hated only what Snow White symbolized, which was youth and the power and beauty of youth? (Haase, 2003). It is interesting to note that when the Queen receives Snow White?s heart, she eats it. ?And [the heart] was salted and cooked and the wicked woman ate it up, thinking that there was an end of Snow White? (Grimm and Grimm 168). This is a remnant of a primitive cannibalistic belief that one receives power and characters through what is consumed. By devouring what she is told to be Snow White?s heart, the Queen believes she is capturing Snow White?s beauty and power within herself (Sale, 1979). These instances show that the Queen was driven to act by her envy of Snow White?s beauty, which was said to be more beautiful than her own. As she saw Snow White?s beauty as a threat to her own (and through it, her power), she saw the need to eliminate Snow White completely. In consuming Snow White?s heart not only is she celebrating her triumph over Snow White, but she is reinforcing her own beauty and vitality. However, as those who are familiar with the story know, this was not the end of Snow White. When the Queen finds out Snow White escapes death from the huntsman and ends up living with seven dwarfs, she still considered Snow White a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. There Have Been Numerous Historical Evidences Shown About There have been numerous historical evidences shown about the Pre colonial history of Black kingdoms in Africa. Many historians have concluded that the people that inhabit Pre colonial Africa were anthropologically Black. However, there has been so much controversy and misconception about the ethnicity of ancient Egyptians by many historians. The controversy is due to many ethnocentric historians and anthropologists attributing the development of the Egyptian civilization to the Caucasian people. Dr. Herbert J. Foster, historian from Staten Island Community College, argues that significant amounts of people inhabiting Egypt were black; they were major contributors to the development of the Egyptian civilization. Dr. Herbert utilizes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There were many quotes throughout the article by anthropologists that echoed the sentiment that it was the Hamites who settled and helped develop Egypt. One notable anthropologist that Dr. Herbert wrote about was C. G. Seligman. Seligman solidified the new Hamitic Hypothesis by praising the success and accomplishments that happened in Africa and Egypt to the Caucasian Hamites. Dr. Herbert then noted that Seligman s theory, still persists in the writings of numerous anthropologists and historians. Dr. Herbert was able to use evidences from different fields such as anthropology and history to understand the controversy surrounding the Hamitic Hypothesis. Dr. Herbert uses scientific, archeological and historical evidences to argue that the ethnicity of Egyptians was black; and that they were major contributors to the Egyptian civilization. Historical evidence was used to support the argument that there were blacks contributing to the expansion of Egypt. Dr. Herbert quoted an author of African History, Basil Davidson, who argued, that the ancient ancestors of present day Africa were an important and perhaps dominant element among the people who fathered early Egyptian civilization. Herbert used scientific studies to help support the claim that Davidson made. Dr. Herbert first talked about the study done in 1905 by Randall McIver and Thompson who surveyed ancient Egyptian skulls. Randall McIver and Thompson ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Nazi Aryan Race Theory Essay In the Holocaust not only were the Jews killed so were a group of people called the Gypsies. 1 million to 4 million Gypsies were killed in the worst ways with no remorse. But why would this happen to the Gypsies if they didn t do anything? They didn t consider the Gypsies Germans. The reason all this started was because of a theory that the Germans made. Nazi Aryan Racial Theory is known as a racial designation; Houston Stewart Chamberian was the first to use the term Aryan to mean the white race it was the Aryans who invaded the conquered ancient India from the north. The Aryan Race Theory was a way that Germans were segregated in many different ways. This started in the 1700s when scholars discovered Sanskrit was closely related to the European ... Romany was also a group of people that were in tribes, not all the tribes were the same they each had their own different costoms, beliefs, leaders, and dialects. The Germans started this theory because they changed the word Aryan into a noun. Gypsies were the most effected because even before the Nazis took over the government, they wanted to find a good reason why they should eliminate the Gypsies wether they had the power or not. The Nazis found that calling the Gypsies asocial elements and also making them irrelevant to normal society, could help in eliminating them. Germans were also told that they would endangered the purity of Aryan blood and the public health. But it all got worse when in 1920 they had changed the label of the Gypsies to worthless life. Later on in 1928 when Weimar constitution was still ruling Germany, everyone had equal rights. But the Germans had passed a law that all Gypsies were under permanent critical police observation. • 9. Post-Civil War America and Policies After the Civil War, which culminated in 1865, the government of United States needed to reunify southern and northern states back together, and the only solution for that were reforms in South. The new political developments began In 1863 when president Abraham Lincoln suggested Ten Percent Plan which indicated that a southern state could be readmitted to the Union as soon as ten percent of its voters asseverated the oath of allegiance to the Union. Lincoln ensured southerners that government will protect their private property, but not their slaves. After Lincoln was assassinated on April 14, 1865, the new President of United States continued following his Ten Percent Plan. Also Lincoln proposed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, promulgated that all persons held as slaves within any State, or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against United States, shall be then, thenceforward and forever free. Nevertheless, Emancipation Proclamation did not end slavery in the states. Lincoln hoped to inspire all the slaves in the Confederacy with the Proclamation. Especially to support the Union Cause and keep European countries, in particular England and France, from politically giving the confession and military aid to Confederacy. Out of all the Era s in the in United States, Reconstruction was the one which consisted of many values, leaders, and objectives. • 10. Symbolism Of Water In Big Fish Essay In Big Fish , Daniel Wallace utilizes water as a recurring theme to reveal that Edward Bloom truly represents the book s title. The story of Big Fish has had a great deal of meaning in my life because I was just in the First Stage production last spring which was a retelling of the 1998 tale. The novel Big Fish revolves around Edward Bloom, a well known teller of tales, and his middle aged son William, a pessimistic businessman who is out on a quest to find the true meaning of his father s massive stories. Edward Bloom was to a sense a golden child, he remembers every man s name, he could run fast, speak in front of crowds, and was a mighty charmer with the ladies. But the thing that William cannot wrap his head around is why his father must always be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... William will soon come to realize that his father s stories were not far from the truth. He really did tame a giant, he meets a so called mermaid and meets and marries the girl of his dreams, Sandra. The object which I brought in, a water bottle, is used to signify the many water symbols in the novel. Water could well be one of the most present and identifiable concepts in the Big Fish story line. I believe the active motion symbolizes Edwards ambition to see every continent and meet everyone in the world. I also found that it represents the quiet, steady personality of Will. Edward is somehow always finding his way back to water throughout the novel. The first scene of the novel begins at the banks of a river where Edward and Will are resting after a hike. He sets his feet in the water and smiles, a smile that William proclaims he has never seen before. Edward then says this reminds me... but never finishes his thought, leaving the reader hanging as to what the story would have been. Another water reference was when Edward sees the beautiful women, the supposed mermaid, in the water and saves her from a snake. This tale occurs in a river near his hometown of Ashland Alabama. • 11. The Tale Of True Grit Set in the American frontier in the latter half of the eighteenth century, the tale of True Grit reads like the diary of a precocious, headstrong, and mature fourteen year old girl. Mattie Ross, the main character, recruits the callous, no nonsense U.S. Marshal Rooster, Cogburn to aid her in tracking down Tom Chaney, her father s killer. Cocky, Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, needs Cogburn to guide him through Indian Territory because he too seeks justice, as well as a monetary reward, for capturing the same outlaw. Mattie demonstrates her strength of will as well as her resourcefulness, as the troupe takes on the unexpected in their adventurous wilderness journey. The three main characters; Mattie Ross, Rooster Cogburn, and Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, all demonstrate true grit in some similar and some dissimilar ways in both the 1968 novel by Charles Portis and the 2010 film adaptation by the Coen brothers. After the Civil War, American society began to move into a new direction and expand. The mid western and southern states growth is by the production of cotton and tobacco, while the distribution of alcohol begins to become prohibited across the nation. In the later 1800 s males and females gender roles were very distinct at this point in history. However in our story, Mattie Ross bends the rules and becomes a modern day feminist voice who insists on having her way. Throughout the film and the novel this is a consistent character quality of hers. In the very beginning of the film, she ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 12. Paraphilic Behavior I believe that there is no way to definitively explain how people become interested in certain sexual desires, although an argument can be made for those who were sexually exploited as a child, which I will also discuss. I think that people are constantly evolving, and as we change through the years, our sexual interests and desires change as well. Things that we liked as children we have a tendency to outgrow as adults, to expect that we will have the same desires at age 40 that we did at age 20 is naive. Things we believe in and lifelong friends we have may be a constant in our lives, but most things have a propensity to evolve. Therefore, you have to ask yourself why sexuality would not be one of the things to evolve as well. People have long debated that most sexual preferences are ... They may only engage in this behavior occasionally and may have many other sexual interests. I am leaning toward one developing a paraphilia due to a habit they had early in life that may not have been of a sexual nature but when being repeatedly associated with the activity they become sexually aroused because it was pleasurable. On the other hand, exposure at an early age to inappropriate sexual behavior a child will learn to mimic the behavior, they become conditioned to enjoy the behavior and therefore see it as normal. Since they were deprived of normal sexual contact, they continue to seek gratification through less acceptable ways. • 13. The Defence Of Poesy By Sir Philip Sidney Sir Philip Sidney argued for the positive value of imaginative literature in The Defence of Poesy, in which he claimed that literature should teach and delight . The influence of Sidney s claim can be seen in John Skelton s work The Bowge of Courte and Thomas Nashe s The Choise of Valentines . Skelton s The Bowge of Court , has been described as a fifteenth century dream vision built on the model of the morality play and The Choise of Valentines as an Ovidian erotic poem , which elaborates a tale of impotence and erotic substitution. While both poems are rich in their differences, due to the satiric and erotic genres, they share the similarity of belonging to a very specific time. By examining the origins d interpreting Sidney s presentation of the phrase teach and delight , the ways in which Skelton and Nashe s texts maintain Sidney s claim can be discussed. Skelton teaches through The Bowge of Court , by employing allegory as a way to critique the court, and uses satire as a form of poetic council. Nashe teaches in The Choise of Valentines by presenting his text and an example of originality and satirising the idea of performance. Skelton delights in his text by using the symbol of the ship as an ornament added to the truth of the poem. Nashe delights in his text by the freshness of language used and the originality of his poetry. It was the Algonquin name iroqu which meant rattle snakes that the French started referring to as the Iroquois after adding ois , a Gallic suffix. Members of the Nations speak Iroquoian languages that are distinctly different from those of other Iroquoian speakers. This suggests that while the different Iroquoian tribes had a common historical and cultural origin, they diverged as peoples over a sufficiently long time that their languages became different. Archaeological evidence shows that Iroquois ancestors lived in the Great Lakes region from at least 1000 A.D. After becoming united in the League, the Iroquois invaded the Ohio River Valley in present day Kentucky to seek additional hunting grounds. According to one pre contact theory, it was the Iroquois who, by about 1200, had pushed tribes of the Ohio River Valley, such as the Quapaw (Akansea) and Ofo (Mosopelea) out of the region in a migration west of the Mississippi River. But, Robert La Salla listed the Mosopelean among the Ohio Valley peoples defeated by the Iroquois in the early 1670s, during the later Beaver Wars. By 1673, the Siouan speaking groups had settled in the Midwest, establishing what became known as their historical territories. The United States has been involved in several of these conflicts, some of which are still ongoing, such as the conflict in Somalia. The conflict in Somalia, widely seen as unsuccessful, saw a significant change from the conventional mindset to one of irregular warfare. While threats from conventional forces still exist in today s environment, irregular warfare has become a mainstay across the globe. Although these stability operations ultimately failed, the U.S. has been able to capitalize on the lessons learned from Somalia. Somalia greatly changed the way the U.S. conducted irregular warfare activities, such as stability operations and two other significant ones. Counterinsurgency (COIN) and Counterterrorism (CT) operations have been used extensively in Somalia since 1992, especially since the failed use of stability operations. While neither of these operations has had success in creating a stable Somalia, both have been instrumental in keeping Islamic militants in check, particularly those with ties to al Qaeda (i.e. al Shabaab). Fighting terrorist organizations such as al Shabaab and al Qaeda have been dominated by irregular warfare, which has spawned numerous military and academic studies regarding irregular warfare. In cases such as Somalia, Afghanistan, and other global hotbeds for terrorism, the U.S. has refined the way irregular warfare is conducted. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This can be confirmed by comparing data from the experiment to accepted data for non treated AISI 1018 steel. During the experiment, two metal specimens were tested on the hardness testing machine, using the HRB scale. From these values the hardness and tensile strength of the specimens can be calculated and compared. After this, the two specimens were put through a polishing process. This process leaves the specimens with a mirror like finish. A 2% Nital solution, a combination of nitric acid and methanol, is then put on the polished faces. The specimens are then ready to be viewed under the microscope where the grain structures can be observed. The treatment these metals have experienced should affect certain properties of their microstructure. It is expected that the fully annealed specimen will be softer than the untreated specimen because larger grains are produced in the annealing process, unlike that of the cold worked specimen. This specimen will be harder and have a higher strength than the untreated specimen because the cold working makes the grains smaller and more compact. There may be some error associated with the results obtained in this experiment due to imperfections in material handling and flaws in the specimens, but it is expected that this experiment accurately illustrates how the treatment process affects the properties of metals. ... Prayer is mentioned as one of the most central disciples due to its intimacy of conversation between us and god himself. Foster describes prayer as our ability to ask for change in circumstances, to pray is to change (P.33). He explains how Jesus often withdrew from the crowds to pray to his father. like so, we should withdraw from time to time. Our disciplines can coincide just as fasting does with prayer; thus being the third discipline prescribed. Fasting is the abstaining from food for scriptural purpose. (p.48) and is said to be seen as a desperate measure for emergency. Foster goes deeper into how and why a Christian should fast, but mostly focuses on its meaning of self control and its centrality being god. Foster s final inward discipline is the practice of study. Study is the focus to our total transformation from our old selves. It is a specific experience aimed to form Christian habits. With that, Foster breaks down study into four steps; repetition, reflection, understanding, and experience which ingrain those habits. In the second part of the book, Celebration of Discipline, Foster outlines the four outward disciplines. These being; simplicity, solitude, submission, and service. • 27. Hurricane Katrina Case Study 1. Did human activity contribute to the severity of the storm, or was it an entirely natural disaster? Support your answer with evidence and citations. The severity of Hurricane Katrina was impacted largely by the location of its landfall. The storm was well tracked by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The NOAA noted that the high pressure of the storm at landfall, the strength of the system and shallow waters offshore all were contributing factors to the severity of the storm. (Graumann, Houston, Lawrimore, Levinson, Lott, McCown, Stephens, Wuertz: 2005, pg 4). When the storm struck, however, it was found that those who were financially better off were able to evacuate easier, leaving those in lower income areas to remain amidst the devastation. Nearly a half million people were excluded from the cities, when FEMA camps were implemented as a means to reconstruct public housing. (Smith, 2006). The human activity leading up to the storm, including levees constructed on the shore as well as the NOAA announcement of a hurricane warning, had been intended to protect the residents of Louisiana and Mississippi. Unfortunately, efforts to prepare those who would be most devastated by the storm failed. The governmental response in the wake of the storm greatly worsened the devastation of the storm. Theme Of Autolycus In The Winter s Tale Shakespeare, in The Winter s Tale, invents Autolycus as an implementer of satire, playing a fundamental function in the context of the play as the counterpoint, however playful, to the first act. Furthermore, Autolycus serves as the chief instrument for the introduction and advancement of comedic themes and acts of trickery as a rogue, thief and master of masks. Therefore, as the implementer of satire, Autolycus furnishes as a crucial counterpoint to the play, which warrants his significance in relation to the play in its entity. As the passage of time marks its quick ascent, the sudden shift from winter to spring and youth into age is marked by the passage of Autolycus as he enters the play singing. When the daffodils begin to peer, with heigh, the doxy over the dale, why, then comes in the sweet o the year, for the red blood reigns in the winter pale (Act IV, Scene 3, Lines 1 4). Autolycus not only signals the shift from tragedy to comedy, but emphasizes the juxtaposition from winter to spring; a time of rebirth. Therefore, Autolycus serves as the epitome of transformations as the play sharply diverges from the common, albeit serious, tales of tragedy to a shift of miraculous harmony. Moreover, Autolycus continues to contradict the social hierarchies, according to historical sources, placed during Shakespearean period as well as the characters. Additionally, I had preconceived notions that qualitative research would be my approach of choice because I assumed it was an easier choice so to speak because it did not include numeric data. This course has definitely changed my mind on being open to the other approaches. I have learned that quantitative, qualitative, and mixed methods approach all involve a lot of time and effort when it comes to planning, executing, and analyzing. Another thing I learned is that each approach is not interchangeable. Just because an individual is more comfortable with one approach over another, does not mean that approach is most suitable for the issue being researched. Even though I learned a lot from this Research Theory course, there are still opportunities for improvement in certain areas. The areas I would like to see improvement is: knowledge of theories in the field of organizational psychology, becoming more fluent in quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods approach, improvement in writing skills, planning and timing just to name a few. According to Banna, knowing theories by researchers who have paved the way in a specific field of study will be an important part of the research process(Laureate Education, Inc., 2009b). This is an area that will be beneficial to me moving forward in the research process because it gives ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Comparing Islam And Christianity And Islam Every religion consists of separate beliefs that determine how they view the world and how they approach situations. Although some beliefs may overlap, there are still details that will be different due to preconceptions and fundamental beliefs. Comparing and contrasting Islam and Christianity, is a wonderful example of these differences based on fundamental beliefs. This concept is explored in the rest of this work through critically accessing Christian and Muslim views on the question of origin, identity, meaning and purpose, morality, and destiny. Islam and Christianity are in agreement that the origin of both living things and man were created by God himself. The Qu ran states that Allah (God) created the heavens and earth in six ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This means that man is above animals, but they are meant to respect and care for them. Muslims are taught that animals should be respected and they should only slaughter them in a proper Islamic manner (Abdul Rahman, 2004). It is also explained to them that they may only bring harm to animals that may be eaten, or else they must seek forgiveness from Allah (Abdul Rahman, 2004). In the bible, it is explained that man was created above the earth and animals, but it is importance that man appreciates his creations (Gutierrez, 2014). It is inferred that Christians should be activists for animal rights, but it is not clearly stated (Weider Gutierrez, 2014). Although Christians are meant to do good and treat Gods creations well, they believe they are destined to stray from this because of the original sin of man (Nigosian, 2004;2003). Therefore, many Christians explain that being human means that you are an imperfect sinner. Muslims do not share this idea. Islam explains that sin is not innate and that individuals have the ability to either do good or bad and that it is their responsibility to make the right decision (Nigosian, 2004;2003). Their ideas of predestined sin, lead to many fundamental differences in beliefs. Although both religions state that humans were created to be rulers of earth, they have differing beliefs on man s capability of doing good and different expectations. Allah accepts a ... • 37. Where the Red Fern Grows Essay Where the Red Fern Grows I cannot remember the first time I read Where the Red Fern Grows, by Wilson Rawls. I read it at about age ten, and I have lost count of how many times I read it since. It was a period in my life when childhood was nearly over, but adolescence had not yet set in, and it was a time when animals were my greatest love. Where the Red Fern Grows is a novel about a young boy and his two dogs, but to an animal lover, it is much more. The story is told in the first person narrative, by an adult reminiscing about his childhood; the reader experiences life through the eyes of an eleven year old boy living in the Ozark Mountains of Arkansas. Over the boy s shoulder, an older narrator frequently ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a child I read Where the Red Fern Grows for its adventures and the profound love Billy has for his two dogs. Billy and his dogs go hunting every night and play in the river during the day. Since I felt I was somewhat of a tomboy, and had two dogs of my own, this greatly appealed to me. The suspense I felt whenever the dogs treed a coon, or the time Grandpa was lost in the blizzard and the dogs found him, never ceased each time I read the book. As I re read it now, however, I can see that there are many more factors that appealed to me, but I did not realize it at the time. This is a book about love not only human love for an animal, but the love of a parent for a child, a man for his home, and a special love between two animals. Billy s family is extremely close knit. His mother teaches Billy and his two sisters to read and write because the school is too far away, and when he turns eleven. Billy s father lets him help out in the fields. To complete the happy nest. Grandpa lives right down the road, and has the family over every Sunday afternoon for supper. There is security in this atmosphere of love. After leaving home for three days to pick up the puppies, Billy s mother breaks down and cries at his return this is punishment enough for Billy, and he ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The present edition of DSM IV published in 1994, offers virtually 400 disorders (Crowe, 2000). The advantage of this is that it enhances diagnostic impartiality by adding decision trees demarcating significant characteristics of disorders, which makes clinicians by collections of questions concerning the presence or the absence of the symptoms. The present DSM IV manual comprises of extensive anthology of information organized into portions for easier reference (Purse, 2009). The first section encompasses instructions on the way to use the tools contained in the DSM IV, while following section contains comprehensive classification systems catalog of the official codes for each single diagnosis. The fourth section comprises of the manual detailing the diagnostic criteria accompanied by a description for each disorder. Despite the advantages highlighted above, there are some disadvantages in the manual compilation. First, the DSM IV compilation lacks the exactitude in diagnostic criterion to evidently, differentiate one diagnosis from the other as well as the distinguishing mental disorder, from the situation, such as mental distress. DSM is not visibly clear on how experiences and behaviors cited within the diagnostic criterion justifiably can consider as substantiation of mental disorder as distinctive from rejoinders to life events (Crowe, ...
