Cholecystitis is an inflammation of the gallbladder most often caused by gallstones obstructing bile flow. Left untreated, it can lead to gallbladder necrosis or rupture. Risk factors include being female, overweight, and over 40 years old. Symptoms include abdominal pain, nausea, and fever. Diagnosis involves ultrasound, HIDA scan, or cholangiography. Treatment is usually laparoscopic cholecystectomy to remove the gallbladder. Post-operatively, nurses monitor for bleeding or infection and teach patients how to prevent pain with movement. Prognosis is generally good with prompt surgical treatment.
