Crafting an essay on the topic "Chinese Essay Sample" can be a challenging endeavor, requiring
a delicate balance of cultural insight, historical understanding, and linguistic proficiency. To
begin with, delving into the vast and rich tapestry of Chinese culture demands a thorough
exploration of its multifaceted aspects, including language, traditions, philosophy, and social
norms.
One of the primary difficulties lies in navigating the intricacies of the Chinese language. The
complexity of Chinese characters, the tonal nature of Mandarin, and the nuances embedded in
expressions pose a formidable challenge for non-native speakers. Translating the essence of
Chinese thought into English while preserving its cultural integrity adds an additional layer of
complexity.
Moreover, tackling the historical dimension of China involves navigating a vast timeline that
spans millennia. From ancient dynasties to modern revolutions, comprehending the historical
context is crucial for providing a nuanced perspective. It requires a careful examination of pivotal
events, influential figures, and the evolution of Chinese society over time.
Additionally, addressing the cultural diversity within China presents a daunting task. The
country's vast geographical expanse has given rise to a myriad of regional customs, dialects, and
traditions. Striking a balance between generalizations and specific details becomes imperative to
offer a comprehensive portrayal of the Chinese cultural mosaic.
Furthermore, engaging with contemporary issues in China requires a nuanced understanding of
its political, economic, and social landscape. Negotiating sensitive topics while respecting
diverse perspectives demands a thoughtful and well-researched approach.
In conclusion, crafting an essay on the topic "Chinese Essay Sample" demands a careful
synthesis of linguistic competence, historical awareness, and cultural sensitivity. Successfully
navigating these challenges can result in a rich and insightful exploration of one of the world's
oldest and most influential civilizations.

Rene Descartes Discourse On Method
The Two Tests Rene Descartes in, Discourse on Method, states that there are two test
that we can use to tell whether or not someone is human or a machine. The first is
that they could never use words or other signs arranged in such a manner as is
competent to us in order to declare our thoughts to others...The second test is, that
although such machines might execute many things with equal or perhaps greater
perfection than any of us, they would, without doubt, fail in certain others from
which it could be discovered that they did not act from knowledge, but solely from
the disposition of their organs. (Descartes 22). Plainly put the two tests that Rene
Descartes proposes here are that if a machine were able to use language in the same
manner... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Epiphenomenalism simply put, is the theory that mental events are not physical
events, but mental events are caused by physical events, and the mind is the
immaterial product of the complex interactions between the brain, nervous system
sense organs. Epiphenomenalism agrees with the notion that Qualia is a necessary
component in a machine having consciousness. Qualia is defined as the special
indescribable, inner experiences that we all have. A philosopher by the name David
Chalmers was quotes as saying To be conscious in this sense is roughly
synonymous with to have qualia, to have subjective experience, (Chalmers 3).
Qualia itself is so necessary to consciousness that if a machine were able to
demonstrate the ability to solve problems and use language, but could never have
experiences or feelings than how could it be conscious? The Chess room signifies the

The Causes Of Tim Howard s Tourette Syndrome
Tim Howard Tourette Syndrome Tim Howard, an amazing soccer player, also has
Tourette syndrome. Tourette s is a disease where people have tics and cannot
concentrate on objects or things for a long time. Howard says, Sports were my
sanctuary. Being outside, playing soccer or basketball, I wasn t focused on my tics,
just on the opponent. I couldn t even tell you if I dealing with tics. Sports were my
escape (Zuckerman 11). The main symptoms of Tourette syndrome are tics,
involuntary muscle movements (Bjorklund 12). Although unpredictable, tics are
more likely to happen when people are sick or anxious (20). The two types of tics,
physical and vocal, can range from mild to severe (12). Mild vocal tics include:
spitting, sneezing, throat clearing, coughing, sniffing, and grunting. There are mild
physical tics also such as sticking out the tongue (21), shoulder shrugging, eye
blinking, and head twitching (20). Tourette syndrome is most often inherited
genetically. Tourette s is a result of a genetic mutation in the brain s basal gangliaor
from a gene mutation in the cerebral cortexof the brain. Scientists also believe this
disease can be a result of environmental factors (12). People can get Tourette
syndrome from a brain injury or bacterial infections (38).
Tourette syndrome is hard to diagnose because there is no test to positively diagnose
the disease(14). Tourette syndrome can be a comorbid condition which means that it
can be combined with another disease or condition. ADHD is one that can be
associated with Tourette syndrome. Doctors diagnose ADHD or other comorbid
condition before Tourette syndrome for reasons like it easier to diagnose and it more
common to see ADHD than Tourette. OCD, ODD, and Asperger syndrome are
comorbid conditions that are often associated with Tourette syndrome (24).
Therefore, kids in school with the disease have trouble focusing and need help in
school in various ways. In school people with Tourette syndrome can get
accommodations through a 504 plan or an Individualized Education Plan (Bjorklund
23). Students may need personal education aid to monitor behavior. Accommodations
a student with Tourette syndrome may receive include exemptions from certain

Bank Of Americ Talent Management Program
Assignment 1: Bank of America Talent Management Program The talent management
program that facilitates the realization of the objective of improving efficiency in
operations at the Bank of America entails the use of an integrative system in
preparing individuals for leadership. According to the program, the management
prioritizes global consistencies as the first step in the identification of talent for
retention at the bank. The subsequent considerations are cultural distinctiveness and
individual owners. As part of its strategy, the bank infuses the three elements to
facilitate the recruitment of the employees with the ability to fulfill the organization s
objectives. When commencing the process, the organization emphasizes on... Show

There is also the utilization of the scientific tools in the simulation of situations. For
this reason, the program tests individual s competencies; thus making it easier for the
administration to retain best in the organization for longer periods. Strengths of the
program The advantages of the program are that it enables the institution to broaden
its scope to target employees from different parts of the globe unlike the situation
before in which the management relied on domestic talent in running operations.
Aside from facilitating consensus in decision making, the program enhances
flexibility in operations. For instance, after its integration in human resource
administration at the Bank of America it became the norm for the organization to
customize its goal in line with the needs of the employees. Additionally, it presents
management the opportunity to employ a diverse array of tactics in the selection of
personnel to serve the organization in various capacities. Courtesy of its existence at
the Bank of America, the institution has the chance of searching talent beyond
borders, thus creating the opportunity for the most competent individual to serve the
organization in various capacities. Another maverick of the program is that it
emphasizes on the continuity in the advancement of talent nurturing,
History Of Sam Phillips
Sam Phillips founded Memphis Recording Services in the early 1950s to record
any and every artist interested in performing at his studio, he had no particular
limits on who the artists were expected to be or what they were supposed to be
singing as long as they made him money. The early years would be spent primarily
recording bluesartists such as B. B. King, Rufus Thomas, Rosco Gordon, Joe Hill
Louis, and Howlin Wolf. Sam Phillips vision was to bring artists as well as genres
together and work alongside them with the objective to create an entirely new style
of music. The studio s name was later changed to Sun Studios, a name that would
end up leaving a legacy that introduced the world to some of the founding fathers and
mothers of rock and roll. Of the countless artists recorded... Show more content on

His philosophy was similar to that of Sam Phillips in that he was willing to accept
artists from anywhere on his way to the top, if he could profit from an artist, a deal
could be made. He differed from Sun Studios with his approach to as well as
appreciation for artists though as he was careless and burned relationships with
supremely talented artists. He grew up in the Bronx playing guitar and piano and
composed music while still in his teenage years, all of which proved to be
important tools in his producing studio. He reportedly had the extraordinary ability
to organize music with artists to perfection in addition to a recording technique that
some referred to as the Wall of Sound. Basically, the wall of sound was a unique
style resembling a raucous roar which was created by many instruments being played
as loudly as possible, mixed with an echoing effect. Phil Spector s success is
evidenced by the many top hits he orchestrated though his studio by artists such as the

Nature And Its Effects On Children
Nature is an important part in the lives of many people. From the simple serenity it
lends to the lives of those who are willing to experience it, or the way its resources
allow everyone to live their lives the way they do, nature plays this important role.
But as civilization has advanced, nature has become a lesser part of everyone s
lives, including children, who are growing up in a more structured environment and
aren t given as much experience with the outdoors as many people before them had.
This is a problem because of the vital role nature plays in the development of
children, including the role it plays in ADHD, mental, and physical health. We know
that children have drastically reduced the amount of play timein their lives. Meaning
the time they spend outside in nature, or experiencing stimuli that are important to
their development. This amount was an estimated 25% from 1981 to 1997 and has
not increased since (Burdette and Whitaker). This is simply an example of how
children are slowly becoming more accustomed to more structured environments for
growth, and how they experience less and less green spaces in their lives. What is
meant by this is the lack of time spent in the natural outdoors and wilderness by
children as more technology and more structured environments is developed. There is
a termthat was coined by Richard Louv in his book Last Childin the Woods that aptly
describes this relatively new phenomenon in children, Richard calls it
Trial and Death of Socrates
Benjamin Jowett. The Trial and Death of Socrates (Dover Edition). New York:
Dover Publications, 1992 What is the charge? Well, a very serious charge, which
shows a good deal of character in the young man, and for which he is certainly not
to be despised. He says he knows how the youth are corrupted and who are their
corruptors. And I fancy that he must be a wise man, and seeing that I am anything
but a wise man, he has found me out, and is going to accuse me of corrupting his
young friends. And of this our mother the state is to be the judge. Of all our political
men he is the only one who seems to me to begin in the right way, with the
cultivation of virtue in youth; he is a good husbandman, and takes care of the shoots
first... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Socrates begins by stating that, since Meletus claims to know who is corrupting the
youth, he must know who improves them. After some back and forth between the
two men, Socrates gets Meletus to say that all Athenians improve the youth and that
Socrates is the only one who corrupts the youth. Socrates continues to use Meletus
own words against him throughout and thus making him look quite foolish in front
of the court. I have said enough in answer to the charge of Meletus: any elaborate
defence is unnecessary; but as I was saying before, I certainly have many enemies,
and this is what will be my destruction if I am destroyed; of that I am certain; not
Meletus, nor yet Anytus, but the envy and detraction of the world, which has been
the death of many good men, and will probably be the death of many more; there is
no danger of mine being the last of them. (p. 29). Here Socrates, in my opinion, shows
the court again that he will turn the other cheek to his accusers and not blame them,
but instead chooses to blame what I would like to call the human condition. That is,
putting your own self interests before that of others to further your gain. This is why
Socrates struggles with anyone giving him a definition of piety, because I think that
to Socrates piety means acting altruistic. Since the human condition is that of self
serving your own interests, he sees through peoples definitions because he knows that

Married To The Mamo Character Traits
A dominant auteur trait that Jonathan Demme helps to display in Married To The
Mob and Something Wild are characters learning how to act in new surroundings.
In Married To The Mob, the lead female character, Angela de Marco, has to give up
everything she owned in Long Island after her husband, Frank de Marco, died. She
wanted to get away from the life of the mob, however, Tony The Tiger Russo wasn
t going to let her get away that easy. There is a scene where Angela, Lil Joey, and
their dog arrive at their crappy apartment. Joey says how they can t live in here,
however, Angela has no other option and this was their only choice. Angela and Joey
now had to conform to a new style of living in this apartment with a bathtub in the
middle... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Married To The Mob, there are many scenes where the lead female character,
Angela de Marco, shows strength despite the many hardships of being married to a
mobster starting with no free will. Where Angela finally realized her worth and
wasn t having it anymore, there was a scene in which Angela and her husband,
Frank, were arguing about how everything in their house was tainted and achieved
only through his dirty work. Among this conversation, Angela manages to slip in
how she s tired of bailing Frank out of jail and wondering when Frank would get
home. The two proceed to the living room and sit on their couch and start throwing
words at each other. Frank starts off by saying, I don t have to sit here and listen to
this, and Angela responds back by saying, Neither do I. After many NO s are
exchanged, we reach the climax of this argument after Frank says, What are you
gonna do bout it? The camera centers on Angela s teary eyed face, and we hear her
first words of strength, I want a divorce. She knows the strength of Cucumber
Frank de Marco. He s a mobster after all and just discreetly killed a man in the
beginning of the film. From the portrayal of Frank through Angela s eyes, we
already know that Frank is capable of anything, therefore, if a divorce were to
happen, the aftermath would most likely not be pretty. This is something that shows
not a breaking point of a character so early in the film, but rather the start of an
internal growth for Angela. In Something Wild, even from the start of the movie, the
lead female character, Audrey, shows a very bold and confident personality. Jonathan
Demme was notoriously known for showing this auteur trait in his films, and it stood
out in this one particular scene in Something Wild. A suspicious friend of Audrey s,
Ray, shows up to their high school reunion and starts getting

Carl Sagan s On Nuclear Disarmament By Carl Sagan
On Nuclear Disarmament is a brilliant piece of work by Carl Sagan detailing the
costs of nuclear war. From the mass destruction and finality of nuclear weapons, to
the fool s bargain we ve made, and how we only reconcile after lives have been lost
it is evident we must do everything in our power to prevent a nuclear war. We, as
the human race, have made so many technological advancements to better our lives
and improve our environment. However, when it comes to our weapons, it seems
we may have gone too far. In the hopes of keeping us safe we ve developed
stronger, better weapons. Whether it s to protect us from each other or from
others, safety has always been the number one concern. Yet, with the use of
nuclear weapons our safety is no longer ensured. A thousand times a thousand,
times a thousand is a billion; in less than a century, our most fearful weapon has
become a billion times more deadly (Sagan 656). As said by Sagan, our weapons
have become exponentially stronger in such a short amount of time. We ve done
this under the belief that it ll make us safer when, in fact, we don t really possess
the knowledge to use such a destructive force. When it comes to nuclear weapons
there is no going back. After the damage has been dealt it can t be undone. Some of
them had an explosive yield equivalent to ten million tons of TNT; enough to kill a
few million (Sagan 656). We hold the power to kill a few million people, when less
than a century ago we only had enough power
Examples Of Isolation In The Great Gatsby
In the Metamorphosis and the Great Gatsby, Gregor Samsa and Jay Gatsby isolate
themselves from others showing immense forms of social isolation. In the
Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor Samsa has recently underwent an
enormous transformation that has spark his need for isolation. One example that
shows Gregors isolation is when he thinks, Well, leaving out the fact that the doors
were locked, should he really call for help? In spite of all his miseries, he could not
repress a smile at this thought (Kafka 948 49). Gregor has yet to present himself to
anyone, but he feels ever more isolated that before. He is thinking that everyone will
reject him and knows the effect that his new body will have on his family. Similar to

Photography and The Gothic
The photographs taken by Terry Evans in the collection Heartland show a range of
perspectives of the Midwest prairie. Heartland displays characteristics of the
traditional Gothic through the combination of wide landscapes and dilapidated
factories. Photos from three collections portray the transition of the untouched
landscape to an overgrown and gothic scene. The first photos of the gothic transition
come from the Prairie Images of Ground and Sky collection. The collection shows
untouched nature that gives a feeling of the sublime. It shows wide green expanses,
bathed in warm light, that shows a raw beauty and goodness created by nature. This
feeling of the sublime is a major aspect of the gothic due to its ability to provide...

This feeling is better reflected in the Matfield Green collection that depicts the
green expanse that is similar to the Prairie Images of Ground and Sky collection but
also includes things such as railroads and power lines that show that the area is
populated. This collection adds an aspect of the isolated landscape and fear of
isolation because there is a sparse dotting of humans across the large expanse that
gives the viewer the knowledge that there are inhabitants around, but not seen or
directly noticed. The element of isolation in nature is demonstrated in The Mysteries
of Udolpho and The Turn of the Screw by Udolpho and the House at Bly through
their setting in isolated landscapes with weak tethers to the rest of civilization. The
idea of overcoming this isolation is also present in the novels. Emily in The
Mysteries of Udolpho escapes the isolation to safety. The Governess in The Turn of
the Screw hopes to do the same by connection with the Man from Harley Street but is
not as lucky. The effect of the isolated landscape with an unknown element causes the
reader and viewer to become suspicious of their surroundings and uneasy with the
sublime landscape due to the possibility that something evil is residing within it and
give a more traditional gothic feel. The third collection that completes a gothic
picture of the Midwest shows the ruins of the prairie. Steel Work
Cull On Seagull
Should there be a Cull on Seagulls?
I despise seagulls. Out of all the birds that we see lots of in our lives why does it
have to be the most noisy, disruptive, ugly birds that populate our city? Wouldn t it be
better if we had beautiful, little birds that call with adorable little tweets? Quite
frankly, seagulls make the town we live in unwelcoming. With their booming
squawks, troublesome rebellious lifestyles and aggressive behaviour; I think that we
would do a lot better without them.
People say that it gives you good luck to have a bird poop on you, but it is the
complete opposite in my opinion. How lucky must one be to have stinky, gooey
gunk on their body? Seagulls, being the creatures that they are, just let their load
drop whenever they feel the need: landing on cars, buildings, nature and also our
washing hanging outside. I remember a particularly wonderful memory when I
was walking down the street and a seagull pooped right on the spot where my
cheek and hair meet. Which made it much more convenient that I was out with my
friends, so I had to ask the nearby shop owners for a tissue to clean it with. It would
be so very pleasant to have one day looking at the clear blue sky, rather than the flock
of gulls flying above me.
Seagulls tend to enjoy hanging out at the beach. You could just be having a nice
meal at a cafe with your family, but see them at the next table robbing food. How
ridiculous! They did not pay for the food and we don t want them interrupting us

funding for long term care facilities is lacking in terms of proper caregiving and

Differences Between Chinese Medicine And Western
Medicine
On the Development of Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine in China Today
from the Differences between Chinese Medicine and Western Medicine Chinese
medicine and Western medicine are two different branches of medical field, these two
medical systems respectively originate in China and Europe. But with the
introduction of Western medicinein China, the debate on the two has never stopped.
In fact, Chinese medicine and Western medicine are completely different academic
systems, the two in the theoretical basis, diagnostic methods, therapies, the nature of
drugs, etc. are significantly different. Moreover, in the practice of modernday China,
Chinese medicine and Western medicine binary coexist.

In fact, Chinese medicine has been marginalized, and western medicine has become
the status of mainstream medicine in China and world. But according to the statistics
from World Health Organization, 4 billion people across the world use Chinese
herbal medicine in their medical treatment, which account for 80% of the world
population. Being representative of purely natural medicine, Chinese medicine has
become the medicine with the most promising future of development. Some well
known medicine companies in western countries, therefore, take advantage of the
bountiful resource of Chinese medicine, plentiful TCM prescriptions of Chinese
patent medicine without much sense of protecting their intellectual property rights,
abundant resource of Chinese herbal medicine, and low cost human resources in
China, and trap all kinds of technical hindrance to prevent Chinese patent medicine in
China from entering international markets to compete; while at the same time, the
western companies import from China the low priced raw materials of Chinese

Abortion Is A Social Issue
Good evening, in a landmark ruling today the Supreme Court Legalized Abortions.
The majority in cases from Texas and Georgia said that the decision to end a
pregnancy during the first three months belongs to the woman and her doctor. Not
the government. Too many the debate over the concerns of abortion begin with Roe
vs Wade, but the controversy has been with us for centuries. Ancient cultures
addressed it. Even Plato and Aristotle spoke of terminating pregnancies both for and
against depending on the mother s health and when life begins. In the 1700 s America
under British common law permitted abortionbefore quickening or, before fetal
movement could be detected. But by the mid 19th century nearly all states had

There are so many different beliefs about when human life begins. These beliefs and
ideas have all affected the morality of this issue. It is obvious why abortion is such a
socio ethical issue with both sides continuously fighting each other over its legality.
After research I believe that women should have the choice when it comes to
surrendering their bodies to hindrance of pregnancy.
In the US around, fifty one percent of pregnancies are unintended. With thirty one
percent of those being unwanted. This statistic comes from the CDC. It is an
unfortunate thing that, that many pregnancies go unwanted, but within those
unwanted pregnancies rape does play a role. Five percent of rape victims do occur
an unwanted. In the United States there are options and one of those options is of
course giving your child away for adoption, but women should have more options.
Women should have the option to have abortion and other pro life choices. They
should have the right to choose the options they want. There are numerous things that
could assist them. There s medical, financial disadvantages that come along with
having a child dealing with a pro nine months and very large social stigmas that affect
their lives.
According to the Colorado Department of Health and impairment unexpected
pregnancies have a higher risk of birth defects and can cause long term development
issues. These include low birth rate, child abuse, postpartum depression, lower

Research Paper On Wine Cocktails
From Sangria to mimosas, wine cocktails make great party starters. And why not?
Wines like Cabernet Sauvignon take on the rich taste of the oak barrels in which
they re stored. Champagnes bring us the taste of the champagne region of France.
And that doesn t even begin to cover the great local wines you can use as your
cocktails base. If you re planning a party and need some recipes for winecocktails, I

Here s some trivia for you.
What s the difference between Champagne and sparkling wine?
If you said that Champagne comes from Champagne, France, you d be right. The
sparkling wine that we know of as Champagne is called that because it s named after
the region where it s made. If the drink is not made in Champagne, then it s just
sparkling wine.
Got it? Good.
If you re fortunate enough to have Champagne that s a real celebration, right? then
use that as your base. Otherwise, sparkling wine will do. Here s how you make this
simple sparkling wine cocktail.

Instructions:
Drop the sugar cube into the glass. Add drops of bitters to the sugar cube. Slowly,
pour champagne into the glass and then serve. It s not necessary to stir this drink.

On Saturday November 4th, I visited Maine South High School to observe the
athletic training room facility. I had emailed the Head Athletic Trainer, Jerry
Bornhoff prior to my attendance to make sure I was allowed to shadow him for
the day. A Maine South football game was scheduled for the afternoon, and the
facility was packed with football players. Throughout the time I was there, I made
sure I noted the whole process of an athlete from when they first arrived and when
they left the training room facility. The Maine South football game was scheduled
for 2 o clock, and players were arriving two hours prior to get taped up and rolled
out. When players first arrived, they were directed to the sign in sheet where they

integrate new and effective means of running their respective businesses. In turn,
these strategies results in an increased profit of sales, stable market position and
greater levels of customer loyalty. In the fast food industry, businesses such as

Despite some issues being raised against the company and the changing of
marketing strategies, McDonald s has remained in the status of being one the
most successful big companies during this recession. On May 9, 2012, the fast
food giant posted February sales results that most chains would envy (Adamy,
2009). Even in this tough economy, McDonald s was able to maintain profitability

certain items to try to create a healthier image for itself. The company is also
planning other menu changes such as switching the size of some of its menu
items. All of these changes in the menu are part of its strategy to provide a range
of choices that supports a balanced lifestyle. McDonald s also has a diverse market
to include not only fast food but also children s wear. The McKid s products include
footwear, videos, toys and casual clothes. Strategies in other areas of the organization
were also made, such as the three wheeled vehicle that is used to collect discarded
cups and burger wrapping in the neighborhoods around some of the restaurant

advantage. These are customer convenience, customer value, and optimal operations.
Together with new innovative digital strategies, McDonald s creates new and bold
ideas for the company. Currently the major focus areas are nutrition
Nutella Makes Up for Cocoa Shortage During World War II
The period was World War II there was a shortage of cocoa at the time; Mr. Pietro
Ferrero, a pastry maker founder of the Ferrero company thought that using hazelnuts
and mixing it with skim milk and a little of chocolate would be a good way to
appease the short supply of cocoa by allowing chocolate to last longer. This still being
the product s two main ingredients today; hazelnutand cocoa. In Italy, during the
1940s; Mr. Ferrero created the Nutellaspread. In its earliest form, Nutella a hazel nut
and chocolate spread was originally called pasta Gianduja this of course was the
Italian term, pasta means paste and the Gianduja was the name of a famous
character in the region in Italy. The paste was first introduced by being made in
the loaves of bread wrapped in tinfoil, used to make sandwiches. A product popular
to children, the bread was tossed away and the paste was most favored. Later
workers decided it would be best if the spread was made easier to spread on the
bread then being known as Supercrema Gianduja , thus being processed in large
jars with a yellow sticker on the middle and a red lid. Soon after in 1964 Pasta
Gianduja or Supercrema Gianduja the product was named Nutella: nut being the
origin of the product and ella a soft Italian term.
Nutella rapidly became popular among Italy. Just 25 years ago, in 1983 the Ferrero
Company introduced the product to the United States market and it was first
imported to the Northeastern part of America and
Christian Kingship
The king must be able to take charge of the appointed persons while also working
to limit the wickedness of the people subject to him (Aquinas 115). He must also
protect his people. A kingship, more specifically a Christian kingship, is able to
meet the temporal and spiritual needs of the people. This provides for a healthier,
longer lasting, and better liked government. Christian kings are able to move beyond
ensuring that their people have the basic necessities needed to live. They also have a
greater incentive to ensure the happiness of those they rule over because their
personal reward of happiness, which is given my God, is directly affected by the
people s satisfaction. This reality keeps the king somewhat reliant on the people which

This allowed for the better understanding of individuals in society, to a certain
extent. The Church also was able to take up the role of checking the state to ensure
that it was not allowed to too harsh or aggressive to the people.
Christianity was able to reconnect the bonds of sincerity and justice which had
been broken as people distanced themselves from the Church and the mindset that
the Church was able to instill in its believers (Bede 32). When service to God was
voluntary, the beliefs were more effective in altering how a person chose to act and
understand the world because the individual desired this way of life and also did not
resist those in charge.
The way that Christian kings were portrayed shows that this compassion that
followed being part of or appreciating the Church caused rulers to be less feared and
more respected due to their altered ways of ruling. The cohesive nature of the Church
and state working in unison caused people to live better lives under the crown and
while living amongst each other due to this new understanding or exposure to

Behavior Involved in Mate Selection and Attraction Essay
Behavior Involved in Mate Selection and Attraction
Reproduction in Homo sapiens, as in all animals, is a primary driving force and has
been elaborated upon since the beginnings of society. Humans must take part in
sexual reproduction to produce offspring, thus initiation behaviors can be studied.
Commonly, the male makes advances and the female is the selector, or chooses the
mate. For humans, this holds true and behavior is modified to maximize competitive
receptability. This phenomenon carries across all cultural boundaries and is deeply
rooted in the overall behavior patterns in the people of the culture. People try to refine
their natural appearance to maximize mating opportunity. The males attempt to

These activities are part of the initiation process that leads to mate selection and
sexual reproduction. The participants in the mate selecting group also sported
various forms of adornment to increase mate reception. For the males, clothing

than females. Females displayed facial coloring (make up), clothing (some revealing
of body), scents, jewelry on hands, around neck, and in ears, and coloration of
fingernails. Females could pose an inviting body posture to promote initiation and
took part in selecting which males are acceptable. These types of behaviors witnessed
were all part of the American cultural style of initiation of mate selection. Some of the
activities and patterns listed can cross cultural boundaries. Face painting, ornate dress,
and scent proliferation have been witnessed in many societies at different times
The Effects Of Global Warming On The Environment And...
The phenomena of global warming are the main factors that lead to the world climate
change. The phenomena give a bad impact on the environmental quality that includes
uncertainly of world temperature and a rising sea level (Maslin, 2004). According the
Smith (2005) the other bad impact on global warming is, increased a greenhouse
gaseous emissions, higher atmospheric temperatures, intense precipitation, and
increased indoor discomfort. The environmental problem and pollution is becoming a
global nightmare and commonly affects the urban areas. This also gives many

As the CO2 in the atmosphere increases, the ability of the earth s surface to reradiate
heat to Deforestation is believed to be another major cause of global warming. The
cutting and burning of about 34 million acres of trees each year resulted in an
increase of 25% carbon dioxide entering the atmosphere Ismail et al. (2010).
Environmental pollution is becoming more common in the urban areas and has
produced many negative environmental impacts to society. One of the effects is an
urban heat island phenomenon in which the temperature in urban areas is higher than
the surrounding area. Climate change not only gives impact to the environment but
also to the natural heating and cooling processes of buildings. The warmer outside
temperature will affect the indoor temperature and thermal comfort of buildings.
When the outdoor air temperature increases, buildings will experience indoor
discomfort and this situation will lead to a higher demand for mechanical ventilation
and increased energy consumption in buildings. Various studies have shown that
passive and low energy cooling are the most preferred techniques used to minimise the
solar load and conductive daytime heat gain through the building. Climate change
does not only give an impact on the
Taking a Look at Joe Flacco
A professional sport is a sport in which the players get paid to play and gets drafted
from either college or high school. A professional sport is that player s job and they
are the best of the best, like Joe Flacco (Baltimore Ravens Quarterback (NFL)). Joe
Flacco was born Joseph Vincent Joe Flacco in Audubon, New Jersey on January
16, 1985. He was born to Karen and Steve Flacco and is of Irish and Italian descent.
He played football, baseball and basketball at Audubon High School and was the
starting quarterback. Flacco was listed as No. 39 among quarterback prospects in
the class of 2003. Flacco s college career started in Pittsburgh where he was
redshirted for a team that went 8 5. In 2004, he became the backup quarterback
that limited his playing time behind starter Tyler Palko. He only played in three
games against Ohio, Nebraska, and South Florida. He finished the season with one
completion for 11 yards. At Delaware Flacco saw his first full time action in the 2006
season. He threw for 2,783 yards, and 18 touchdowns with 10 interceptions and
Delaware struggled to a 5 6 record. They missed the FCS Playoffs. In the 2007

Icarus built a giant maze to hold the Minotaur close to Minospalace in Knossos. The

seven to nine years the people of Athens had seven guys and seven girls taken from
their families as sacrifices to the Minotaur. Theseus volunteered to kill the Minotaur,

I do not know how someone could ever have sexual relations with an animal. I have
tried to wrap my head around it and I just cannot begin to feel pity for Pasiphae or
the Minotaur. Minos was selfish and was only thinking of himself and not the
consequences of his actions. Not once did it probably cross his mind that by going
against Poseidon and not sacrificing his best bull that his wife would have a curse
placed on her. Causing her to lust after the bull he refused to sacrifice. His first
child to be born, even though it was not his biologically the child still came from
his wife. He never had the father son relationship from the simple fact of the child
being cursed as well. Having a bull face on a human body is horrifying. He sent his
own family to a maze to stay for eternity. So Minos actually ended up sacrificing
something much greater. His wife, his life, and his first child experience. This story
shows how one selfish act can have a ripple effect on the ones you love while you
are not even realizing it. You need to be careful with your decisions and actions; you
never know who they could
My Passion In Sports
My passion is playing sports. I have always been athletic as I grew up playing all
different types of sports. I did gymnastics, basketball, and I continue to play on
multiple soccer teams. However ,I have become a lot more passionate about track
and field. Track and field is more of a laid back sport compared to others as it goes
on in an order of events. The events I participate in are various sprinting events and
the pole vault. Pole vault is my favorite of the two events because there are not
many people who compete and it is like a little family amongst competitors. My
teammates and I have a lot of fun hanging out and cheering each other on. Along
with the people I also enjoy the competition and the thrill of beating your personal
record whether it is in a race or in pole vault.
I pole vaulted for the first time when I was ten years old. My neighbor, who
coincidently is the pole vault at the high school, invited my brother, my neighbors
and I to try it one day during the summer. I ended up not being horrible at it so
when I got to high school I figured I would try it again and see how it went. It went
very well. My neighbor who is the pole vault coach is now very old so he is not
able to make it to practice very often. The pole vaulters and I do have the head coach
of the whole track team assist us from time to time but mostly we all, the four of us
that is, critique and help each other reach new heights, literally, when we vault. My
teammates are my most constant

Monetary and Fiscal policies as adopted in Nigeria have four broad objectives. The

The Iliad By Homer And With The Old Breed
When reading the Iliad by Homer and With the old Breed by E. B. Sledge, the two
stories that revolve around warfare are surprisingly different. Not because of the
time period but because of how warfare is viewed in each of these works. In the
Iliad, warfare is not only conducted differently but it is viewed as a very heroic and
noble thing. Throughout the Iliad, Homer avoids all of the gruesome or evil topics of
warfare and simple shows the noble aspects, so much so that he ensures that most
of the important characters get a heartfelt and heroic monologue before they die.
On the other hand With the old Breed by E. B. Sledge shows warfare to the exact
opposite of what Homer has portrayed, a mentally taxing experience that most of
the time breaks the soldiers to the point where they would never be the same.
According to Shay, The Iliad is a work of poetry, not sociological or historical
scholarship (Shay, 121). Seeing as how the Iliad focuses more on only positive
aspects of war, Shay is correct in his statement. These two works are vastly
different from one another through their descriptions of the various aspects of
warfare. One difference of the two works is the kind of weaponry that was used.
Not the fact that one book had guns and the other had swords, but the impact of
having those types of weapons. In the Iliad, the only kind of long range weapons
were bows and arrows which could not shoot too far so you could always see who
was attacking you. However, in With the old
Descriptive Essay About Breakfast
Every morning, my son Pete wakes up at 6:30 AM. I have 2 ВЅ hours to get us both
ready for the day, which seems like it should be plenty of time. But each day the
nanny arrives at 9, and I m never ready to leave! So I started making these freezable
breakfast sandwiches to help me get out the door faster.
I m a personal chef, so I m really fast in the kitchen. Before I had Pete, I never really
understood why people said that they didn t have time to cook breakfast in the
morning. Scrambling an egg takes no time at all! But now I realize, you have to
clean the pan, the spatula, your plate, and also eat the eggs with a fork in your
kitchen, all while trying to wrangle the baby in the other arm. In this new reality,
minutes matter.
Finding a quicker breakfast solution
So I wanted a quicker and cleaner way to get my fuel in the morning. While
oatmeal and granola can be nice occasionally, my go to breakfast will always include
eggs. They give me longer lasting energy, plus I almost always prefer savory to
sweet. I needed a way to have my eggs quickly, without having to do any of the
actual cooking in the morning. Ideally, something that could be made in a big batch
and frozen in individual portions.
Strata was an early contender. This Vegetable, Egg and Cheddar Strata recipe is
one I make for clients often and it freezes beautifully. But there s a lot of up front
prep, a long cook time, and it still requires a plate and fork. I also considered
quiche, my personal brunch favorite. It didn t make the cut for the same reasons.
So then I started thinking of the breakfast sandwiches they serve at Starbucks. They
re pre made, pretty tasty, and always hit the spot when I need a quick breakfast. I
decided to make my own version that I could enjoy at home for a third of the price
per sandwich.
The beautiful thing about these breakfast sandwiches is that they are completely
customizable. Ham, sausage, bacon, turkey bacon, and veggie sausage are all great
options. Cheddar is my favorite cheese choice, but you can use any sliced cheese
that melts well. You can even mix cooked veggies into the eggs to increase your
morning fiber intake. Once you get the overall method down, it s easy to switch it up.

What Does Moral Relativism Means
Relativism is the idea that some element or aspect of experience or culture is
relative to (or dependent on) some other element or aspect. Therefore, as Aristotle
expressed it, things are what they are only relative to other things, and nothing is
what it is simply in virtue of itself. (Basic Philosophy) Moral Relativismis the position
that moral or ethical propositions do not reflect objective and/or universal moral
truths, but instead make claims relative to social, cultural, historical or personal
circumstances. (Basic Philosophy) Relativism claims that ethics are relative to
individuals, groups, cultures, and societies. Relativism resists universal norms and

because different societies have different codes and the moral code of a society
determines what is right or wrong in that society. Calling the action right in that
society makes it right, at least within that society. There is no objective standard that
can be used to judge one society s code against another. Is it arrogant to judge other
cultures are should we be tolerant of them? We need to ask the question: but is it
true? One way to get at the truth is realizing it is self defeating. We cannot criticize
know other culture judgement if they are following their moral code. But according
to moral relativism, there is not a single true or just morality. We tend to believe that
what is good for some people is not necessarily good for others. On the other hand,
we also argue with one another all the time about what actually is right and wrong.

Big Brother Is Watching You On It Chapter Summary
The book opens with a description of our protagonist. He is a middle aged man
with obvious health problems. His home, a run down apartment building that can
hardly hold itself together. One of the first setting descriptions the readers encounter
is about a large billboard with a man s face on it with the text, Big brother is
watching you on it. The book s details establish a world that comes off as threatening
and unsafe, these ideas are supported by later information given that explains what
the Thought Police are and what a Telescreen is. Thought police are said to scrutinize
every action made by the people of Oceania, the state in which Winston Smith, the
protagonist lives.
Winston s fears are further shown later in the book when his neighbor comes over.
At first he believes it is the thought police coming to take him away but instead it
was Mrs. Parson, his neighbor. This event does a good job of showing readers the
kind of fear that the people of Oceania live in. At home, a place where people should

The Effects of Burning Carbon Dioxide Essay
The Effects of Burning Carbon Dioxide
The main waste product of fuel we burn is carbon dioxide, which is thought to
have been the main factor in the gradual rise of global temperatures of the last
hundred years. The rise is called Global Warming . The mechanism used to explain
the rise in temperature is the greenhouse effect. Infrared radiation is trapped by
atmospheric gases. Sunlight easily passes these gases on it way into the earth s
atmosphere but on its way out the gases reflect the radiation back towards earth.
Therefore as these gases increases the amount of radiation kept in the atmosphere is
increased. Caron dioxide is one of the main green houses gases. Carbon dioxide is a

He suggests that rather than cutting carbon dioxide emissions, it would be more cost
effective to reduce the amount of sunlight entering the atmosphere by scattering the
sun s rays. Fine metallic nets deployed in the stratosphere should do the trick
according to Mr. Teller. This would help slow or even stop global warming.
Carbon Monoxide:
Carbon monoxide forms during incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. It is
extremely hazardous as things such as gas central heating boilers which are badly
maintained can leak the gas causing carbon monoxide poisoning which would result
in death. Carbon monoxide reacts irreversibly with haemoglobin. In red blood cells
haemoglobin normally reacts with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin, which is then
transported from our lungs to all our body cells. When carbon monoxide is breathed
in it combines with haemoglobin to form carboxyhaemoglobin where the oxygen is
not released from the haemoglobin therefore causing a lack of oxygen which can
result in death.
The solutions to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning are to give the odorless gas a
distinct smell so that people can smell when there are gas leaks in their appliances.
Another solution is to install carbon monoxide detectors which act in the same way
as fire alarms and give off a signal when they detect carbon monoxide. There are other
precautions which can be taken such as maintaining your
Class Dismissed Analysis
The Media Education Foundation (n.d.) documentary Class Dismissed discusses
the representations of America s working class from the early days of television to
the sitcoms of present day. The idealized middle class or the American dream was
and is depicted in ways that have molded the public perception of social class. The
film identified class intersections with gender, race and sexuality and the portrayal of
these roles through popular iconic characters and shows on TV throughout its history.
Televisionmainly financed by advertisers was and still is a subliminal means of
increasing product sales by influencing viewers to make purchases that enable them
to identify with being part of the desirable Middle class American Dream .
As the television evolved and reached more and more people. TV producers
disregarded the fact that Television s representations of people, class and their

entertainment. The majority of TV Shows are commercially financed with

What Are The Arguments Related To The Declaration Of...
In 1776, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence which don the

constituents is important for assessing the physiological status and the health of
animals. The present study was carried out to find out whether the estrus affects the
concentrations of ghrelin, interleukin 1ОІ (IL 1ОІ), and IL 6 in Murrah buffaloes.
The result indicated that serum ghrelin concentrations were higher in luteal phase
compare to other phase, the highest concentrations of IL 1ОІ and IL 6 were observed
at the end of the luteal phase. Keywords: ghrelin, cytokine, buffalo, estrus period
Introduction Ghrelin is a 28 amino acid, octanoylated peptide which is secreted
primarily by cells in the abomasum in ruminants. Ghrelin concentrations increase
prior to scheduled meals and in response to fasting in ruminants, and feeding
suppresses ghrelin secretion (Bradford and Allen, 2008). Ghrelin is expressed and
produced in several tissues, but the gastric mucosa is the major source of circulating
ghrelin. Ghrelin is a hormone with multiple functions and diverse biological actions.
The acylated ghrelin is the only known
Ardennes Offensive Advantages And Disadvantages
The Allies faced various disadvantages during the Ardennes Offensive: пѓ Since the
Allies had reached the German border after the Normandy landings by this time, they
faced an important intelligence disadvantage. The Germans used only telephones and
tele printers within the German borders. Radios were not used as the Allies had
cracked Enigma by then. пѓ The Allied aircraft reconnaissance suffered due to the
autumn fog and withheld them from making optimum use of air power especially the
tank busting Typhoons of the RAF or Mustang fighters from the USAAF which
would have been used against German tanks. Though the weather was typical for the
Ardennes in winter, the ground was hard enough for military vehicles to cross and
this suited the armored attack Hitler envisaged. пѓ Germans used charcoal instead of
wood to reduce smoke detection. The Battle of Bulge Military Situation maps: 16th
December 1944 On the morning of 16th December, the Germans launched an attack
on the Allied forces through the Ardennes. The plan for Dietrich s 6th Army was for
the three infantry divisions to punch a hole on either side of Udenbrath, and then
swing north west to form a hard shoulder facing north while the four armored
divisions drove through the... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Lack of fuel and manpower on the western front made it inevitable had the German
offensive would fall through unless Allied supplies could be captured intact and
that was a long shot in any case. Hitler had been defeated by Allied air superiority,
by the defenders of Bastogne, by poor coordination among his own forces
(especially between the Fifth and Sixth Panzer Divisions) and by a new weapon,
the proximity fuse which could make a shell go off at a distance from its target
through the use of radars. However, in the end it was his extreme military belief that
attack is the best defense , that proved fatal to the German

P1 Describe how marketing techniques are used to market products in two
organisations.
Marketing is the term where companies create their products or services awareness
into the market. This goes ahead with identifying the customer s needs and then
working on purpose. The customers found to be in the centre of the whole process as
they help in profit making. Marketing techniques can be defined in to different
strategies which are:
Growth strategies It is the strategy which always aims high and tries to get as larger

Critical Reading
I. Introduction
The original owner had highlighted the entire bookВ—literally. Every line on every
page had been drawn through with a bright green Magic Marker. It was a terrifying
example of a mind that had lost all power of discrimination.
Florence King
Being a student requires readingВ—and a lot of it. Some love it, some hate it.
Nonetheless, we can t escape it. Reading is part of a student s life, and the length
of time spent on it defines the kind of student one is. It is a challenge to even start
going through the first page, all the more to finish it until the end. And yet, to
understand is completely a different story. Reading has been described as a gateway
to explore new worlds, a key to unlock the treasure of infinite ... Show more content

The four techniques mentioned undoubtedly reduces the length of time you spend
on reading, but you ve got to know when to use it and when not to. Skimming
involves locating the main idea of a text. Once located, this main idea would give
you an overview for the supporting statements that you would have to read
afterwards. Remember that skimming is used only when your purpose for reading
allows you to read for general concepts rather than specific information
(McWhorter, 453). If you already know the text that you are about to read, then
apply scanning. Aside from going directly to what you need, other words that pass
through your scanning fingertips would somehow flash to your brain. Thus, you
are exposed to the other information of the text. Glancing may be used to detect
organizational pattern of a text as you basically go over the text in no particular
order. Lastly, you could skip some parts of a text because either you feel that it is
not too relevant or you already know the details of what is being discussed. There are
two things that we need to possess to get things going: motivation and self discipline.
Motivation gives you the drive to pursue what is needed to be done. It eliminates
negative thoughts that hinder the fulfilment of your goals. Self discipline, on the
other hand, is the controlling factor to your pursued objective. If motivation gives
you the head start, self discipline helps you continue what you have started.

African Slave Trade in American History
African Slave Trade in American History
Slavery has taken place throughout the world since before ancient times, and the act
of trading slaves was a common act throughout the world for centuries. Slavery
previously existed in certain parts of Africa, Europe, Asia, and also in America before
the beginning of the Trans Atlantic slave trade. What initially started out as an
enormous search for trade in gold, spices, and etc., ended up turning into an callous
human trading system of exporting African slaves, which would continue for well
over 400 years. In the late 15th century, Europeans and Arabs removed slaves from
the West, Central and Southeast Africaoverseas during the African slave trade era.

In most cases the original people that were chosen for labor had proved that they
were unreliable and most of them were dying from diseases brought over from
Europe. The Europeans were unequipped to become acclimated to the different
climates in which they suffered very major tropical diseases. Africans, on the other
hand, were outstanding workers: they often had experience of agriculture and
keeping cattle, they were used to a tropical climate, resistant to tropical diseases, and
they could be worked very hard on plantations or in mines.
The Portuguese proceeded to the kidnapping of men, woman, and children from
many African tribes from the west coast of Africa and to take those that were
captured to Europe and various other countries. By the seventeenth century the Trans
Atlantic slave trade was in full operation, reaching its peak towards the end of the
nineteenth century. More than 15 million Africans were forced to leave Africa to
cross the Atlantic to be sold into slavery. In addition, millions of Africans lost their
lives because of slave retaliation or during their forced transportation to the ships
where they would be transported to the Americas. Many of the Africans that were
enslaved were previously prisoners of war or became prisoners from slave attacks
that took place during their capture. As the need for slaves increased, so did the
practice of organized slave attacking, which increased in scope and

Except these tools, normal PMs are based on CBM strategy. Although it is very
important to determine how often PM should be done, the decision making
process for PM cycle is still rely on engineering experience. As shown in figure 1, the
decision flow of PM cycle for the tool has two phases, and are connected by extension

the guaranteed is expired, extension test will be applied to the stabilized tool, and
followed by a successful extension test, the PM cycle will go to Phase II period.

PM Cycle Extension Test
When the tool is brought in for the first time, the supplier will suggest a determined
PM cycle. Each tool will have one to three year s warranty, which is offered by that
supplier. After that, the PM cycle will be re determined according to the cleaning,
repair and replacement cycle of the parts that are conducting to the tool. For the
stabilized tool, its period is extended by using the evaluation test of PM cycle

The evaluation test for extension is an engineering determination process, in which

engineer will extent it s PM cycle to bi monthly for one certain tool. If no
Pet Pets And Pet Owner
Every animal lover and pet owner has a desire to give his or her pets the best life
possible. I for one know that I am supremely guilty of pampering all of my pets to

that when their wallet is not as full as it used to be. Comprised in this article is a list

If you live in the Los Angeles area and have had a beloved pet die, you might be
wondering if there is a pet cemetery where you can lay your faithful friend to rest.
Fortunately, one of the oldest pet cemeteries on the West Coast is located in the
Los Angeles area. It s long and colorful history make it a unique haven for pet
owners. Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park, nestled in the rolling hills of Calabasas,
consists of 10 acres of peaceful, beautifully landscaped grounds. This pet cemetery,
founded in 1928, was once threatened to be turned over to land developers. A
committed and passionate group of pet owners formed S.O.P.H.I.E. (Save Our
Pets History in Eternity), a non profit group dedicated to preserving the grounds.
They were able to raise enough funds to buy the grounds and were responsible for
the passing of the first ever State law in California to protect pet cemeteries. In
1986 S.O.P.H.I.E. dedicated the Park in perpetuity. As such, you can be assured
your pet will rest in peace in this lush sanctuary. Los Angeles Pet Memorial Park is
a full service pet cemetery that offers a 24 hour pick up service and assistance in

Al Qaed Terrorist Groups Essay
Founded by Osama bin Laden around the late 1980 s, one of the largest, most
terrifying, terrorist groups known worldwide is the Islamist organization, Al Qaeda.
According to the Council on Foreign Relations, Jayshree Bajoria and Greg Bruno
examine Al Qaeda as an international terrorist network that seeks to free Muslim
countries of profane influence, and replace governments with fundamentalist Islamic
regimes. Originating back to around 1988, Al Qaeda grew out of a Service Office,
run by Osama bin Laden and Abdullah Azzam. The Services Office would recruit
international Muslims from more than fifty countries, training, and financing them
into foreign mujahedeen and holy warriors. Although Al Qaeda does not operate at a
single headquarters, the bases of all operations are constructed either within
Afghanistan, Pakistan or along the boarder (par. 2, 3, 4). Known as one of the most
notorious terrorist groups in the world, Al Qaeda is considered a terrorist group
because of their ideologues and goals, along with their extreme use of violence.
Forming as an effort to support Muslims against the Soviets in the Afghanistan war,
developed a strong hatred towards non Islamic governments. As a growing
organization, Al Qaeda maintained officers in countries including Pakistan,
Afghanistan and the United States. The FBI s Testimony on Al Qaeda presented by
J.T Caruso reveals that US citizens were recruited through the Western world to
engage in financial transactions and to deliver
Global Capitalism And Its Impact On The United States
It is not just the arbitrary concepts of capitalism which have a tendency to expand,
under the Marxist understanding of the state, capitalist states will make foreign
policy decisions for the benefit of global capitalism. The increased intervention by
western states in the Marxist view is about the sole purpose of the expansion of
capitalismin the search of profit for the companies, using the state as a mobiliser for
action towards such an end. Mark Rupert brought forward a case study of such
imperialism in action, in the case of the US. Global capitalist activities require
huge amounts of energy, and the cheapest or most efficient form is petroleum.
Despite not being a democracy and not practising equality, or respecting human
rights, all core values to the US, Saudi Arabia remains one of the US s closest
allies. If the actions of the US abroad primarily concerned democracy promotion,
human rights and core liberal values, this alliance does not make sense, but when
you use a Marxist lens, and consider that alliances are about capitalism, you quickly
understand why Saudi Arabia, a large producer of oil is a huge geopolitical ally of
the US. This also applies to explaining enemies, for example Cuba and Qaddafi s
Libya. Cuba on the one hand is one of the few countries which still ideologically
rejects capitalism as a form of organising society, which has resulted in a ban on all
trade with Cuba. Alternatively, Qaddafi, who was the leader of an oil rich Libya for
many years
Summary Of Steven Pinker And The Language Of Instinct
Elise Brown

Language and Learning
Individual paper: Steven Pinker and The Language of Instinct
Language is not a cultural artifact that we learn the way we learn to tell time or how
the federal government works. Instead, it is a distinct piece of the biological makeup
of our brains. Language is a complex, specialized skill, which develops in the child
spontaneously, without conscious effort or formal instruction, is deployed without
awareness of its underlying logic, is qualitatively the same in every individual, and is
distinct from more general abilities to process information or behave intelligently. For
these reasons, some cognitive scientists have described language as a psychological
faculty, a mental organ, a neural system, and a computational module. But I prefer the
admittedly quaint term instinct (4 5). In the book, The Language ... Show more

Pinker describes language as a human instinct and discusses the evolution of
language. Pinker, a psychology professor at Harvard University, provides a
thorough description of research he has done with children and animals to prove
how language is created, how it develops throughout life, and how it came to be in
the first place. Much of Pinker s book discusses developments made by Noam
Chomsky, an American linguist, and reproduces these developments in a more clear
and understandable form. Within The Language Instinct, Pinker discusses many
complicated topics like the idea of universal grammar, the separation between
language and thought, the difference between oral language and written language
and the evolution of language as well as

  • 2. Rene Descartes Discourse On Method The Two Tests Rene Descartes in, Discourse on Method, states that there are two test that we can use to tell whether or not someone is human or a machine. The first is that they could never use words or other signs arranged in such a manner as is competent to us in order to declare our thoughts to others...The second test is, that although such machines might execute many things with equal or perhaps greater perfection than any of us, they would, without doubt, fail in certain others from which it could be discovered that they did not act from knowledge, but solely from the disposition of their organs. (Descartes 22). Plainly put the two tests that Rene Descartes proposes here are that if a machine were able to use language in the same manner... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Epiphenomenalism simply put, is the theory that mental events are not physical events, but mental events are caused by physical events, and the mind is the immaterial product of the complex interactions between the brain, nervous system sense organs. Epiphenomenalism agrees with the notion that Qualia is a necessary component in a machine having consciousness. Qualia is defined as the special indescribable, inner experiences that we all have. A philosopher by the name David Chalmers was quotes as saying To be conscious in this sense is roughly synonymous with to have qualia, to have subjective experience, (Chalmers 3). Qualia itself is so necessary to consciousness that if a machine were able to demonstrate the ability to solve problems and use language, but could never have experiences or feelings than how could it be conscious? The Chess room signifies the question of
  • 3. The Causes Of Tim Howard s Tourette Syndrome Tim Howard Tourette Syndrome Tim Howard, an amazing soccer player, also has Tourette syndrome. Tourette s is a disease where people have tics and cannot concentrate on objects or things for a long time. Howard says, Sports were my sanctuary. Being outside, playing soccer or basketball, I wasn t focused on my tics, just on the opponent. I couldn t even tell you if I dealing with tics. Sports were my escape (Zuckerman 11). The main symptoms of Tourette syndrome are tics, involuntary muscle movements (Bjorklund 12). Although unpredictable, tics are more likely to happen when people are sick or anxious (20). The two types of tics, physical and vocal, can range from mild to severe (12). Mild vocal tics include: spitting, sneezing, throat clearing, coughing, sniffing, and grunting. There are mild physical tics also such as sticking out the tongue (21), shoulder shrugging, eye blinking, and head twitching (20). Tourette syndrome is most often inherited genetically. Tourette s is a result of a genetic mutation in the brain s basal gangliaor from a gene mutation in the cerebral cortexof the brain. Scientists also believe this disease can be a result of environmental factors (12). People can get Tourette syndrome from a brain injury or bacterial infections (38). Tourette syndrome is hard to diagnose because there is no test to positively diagnose the disease(14). Tourette syndrome can be a comorbid condition which means that it can be combined with another disease or condition. ADHD is one that can be associated with Tourette syndrome. Doctors diagnose ADHD or other comorbid condition before Tourette syndrome for reasons like it easier to diagnose and it more common to see ADHD than Tourette. OCD, ODD, and Asperger syndrome are comorbid conditions that are often associated with Tourette syndrome (24). Therefore, kids in school with the disease have trouble focusing and need help in school in various ways. In school people with Tourette syndrome can get accommodations through a 504 plan or an Individualized Education Plan (Bjorklund 23). Students may need personal education aid to monitor behavior. Accommodations a student with Tourette syndrome may receive include exemptions from certain assignments,

  • 5. History Of Sam Phillips Sam Phillips founded Memphis Recording Services in the early 1950s to record any and every artist interested in performing at his studio, he had no particular limits on who the artists were expected to be or what they were supposed to be singing as long as they made him money. The early years would be spent primarily recording bluesartists such as B. B. King, Rufus Thomas, Rosco Gordon, Joe Hill Louis, and Howlin Wolf. Sam Phillips vision was to bring artists as well as genres together and work alongside them with the objective to create an entirely new style of music. The studio s name was later changed to Sun Studios, a name that would end up leaving a legacy that introduced the world to some of the founding fathers and mothers of rock and roll. Of the countless artists recorded... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His philosophy was similar to that of Sam Phillips in that he was willing to accept artists from anywhere on his way to the top, if he could profit from an artist, a deal could be made. He differed from Sun Studios with his approach to as well as appreciation for artists though as he was careless and burned relationships with supremely talented artists. He grew up in the Bronx playing guitar and piano and composed music while still in his teenage years, all of which proved to be important tools in his producing studio. He reportedly had the extraordinary ability to organize music with artists to perfection in addition to a recording technique that some referred to as the Wall of Sound. Basically, the wall of sound was a unique style resembling a raucous roar which was created by many instruments being played as loudly as possible, mixed with an echoing effect. Phil Spector s success is evidenced by the many top hits he orchestrated though his studio by artists such as the Crystals, Ronettes, Righteous Brothers, and Ike and Tina
  • 6. Nature And Its Effects On Children Nature is an important part in the lives of many people. From the simple serenity it lends to the lives of those who are willing to experience it, or the way its resources allow everyone to live their lives the way they do, nature plays this important role. But as civilization has advanced, nature has become a lesser part of everyone s lives, including children, who are growing up in a more structured environment and aren t given as much experience with the outdoors as many people before them had. This is a problem because of the vital role nature plays in the development of children, including the role it plays in ADHD, mental, and physical health. We know that children have drastically reduced the amount of play timein their lives. Meaning the time they spend outside in nature, or experiencing stimuli that are important to their development. This amount was an estimated 25% from 1981 to 1997 and has not increased since (Burdette and Whitaker). This is simply an example of how children are slowly becoming more accustomed to more structured environments for growth, and how they experience less and less green spaces in their lives. What is meant by this is the lack of time spent in the natural outdoors and wilderness by children as more technology and more structured environments is developed. There is a termthat was coined by Richard Louv in his book Last Childin the Woods that aptly describes this relatively new phenomenon in children, Richard calls it
  • 7. Trial and Death of Socrates Benjamin Jowett. The Trial and Death of Socrates (Dover Edition). New York: Dover Publications, 1992 What is the charge? Well, a very serious charge, which shows a good deal of character in the young man, and for which he is certainly not to be despised. He says he knows how the youth are corrupted and who are their corruptors. And I fancy that he must be a wise man, and seeing that I am anything but a wise man, he has found me out, and is going to accuse me of corrupting his young friends. And of this our mother the state is to be the judge. Of all our political men he is the only one who seems to me to begin in the right way, with the cultivation of virtue in youth; he is a good husbandman, and takes care of the shoots first... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Socrates begins by stating that, since Meletus claims to know who is corrupting the youth, he must know who improves them. After some back and forth between the two men, Socrates gets Meletus to say that all Athenians improve the youth and that Socrates is the only one who corrupts the youth. Socrates continues to use Meletus own words against him throughout and thus making him look quite foolish in front of the court. I have said enough in answer to the charge of Meletus: any elaborate defence is unnecessary; but as I was saying before, I certainly have many enemies, and this is what will be my destruction if I am destroyed; of that I am certain; not Meletus, nor yet Anytus, but the envy and detraction of the world, which has been the death of many good men, and will probably be the death of many more; there is no danger of mine being the last of them. (p. 29). Here Socrates, in my opinion, shows the court again that he will turn the other cheek to his accusers and not blame them, but instead chooses to blame what I would like to call the human condition. That is, putting your own self interests before that of others to further your gain. This is why Socrates struggles with anyone giving him a definition of piety, because I think that to Socrates piety means acting altruistic. Since the human condition is that of self serving your own interests, he sees through peoples definitions because he knows that they
  • 8. Married To The Mamo Character Traits A dominant auteur trait that Jonathan Demme helps to display in Married To The Mob and Something Wild are characters learning how to act in new surroundings. In Married To The Mob, the lead female character, Angela de Marco, has to give up everything she owned in Long Island after her husband, Frank de Marco, died. She wanted to get away from the life of the mob, however, Tony The Tiger Russo wasn t going to let her get away that easy. There is a scene where Angela, Lil Joey, and their dog arrive at their crappy apartment. Joey says how they can t live in here, however, Angela has no other option and this was their only choice. Angela and Joey now had to conform to a new style of living in this apartment with a bathtub in the middle... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Married To The Mob, there are many scenes where the lead female character, Angela de Marco, shows strength despite the many hardships of being married to a mobster starting with no free will. Where Angela finally realized her worth and wasn t having it anymore, there was a scene in which Angela and her husband, Frank, were arguing about how everything in their house was tainted and achieved only through his dirty work. Among this conversation, Angela manages to slip in how she s tired of bailing Frank out of jail and wondering when Frank would get home. The two proceed to the living room and sit on their couch and start throwing words at each other. Frank starts off by saying, I don t have to sit here and listen to this, and Angela responds back by saying, Neither do I. After many NO s are exchanged, we reach the climax of this argument after Frank says, What are you gonna do bout it? The camera centers on Angela s teary eyed face, and we hear her first words of strength, I want a divorce. She knows the strength of Cucumber Frank de Marco. He s a mobster after all and just discreetly killed a man in the beginning of the film. From the portrayal of Frank through Angela s eyes, we already know that Frank is capable of anything, therefore, if a divorce were to happen, the aftermath would most likely not be pretty. This is something that shows not a breaking point of a character so early in the film, but rather the start of an internal growth for Angela. In Something Wild, even from the start of the movie, the lead female character, Audrey, shows a very bold and confident personality. • 10. Carl Sagan s On Nuclear Disarmament By Carl Sagan On Nuclear Disarmament is a brilliant piece of work by Carl Sagan detailing the costs of nuclear war. From the mass destruction and finality of nuclear weapons, to the fool s bargain we ve made, and how we only reconcile after lives have been lost it is evident we must do everything in our power to prevent a nuclear war. We, as the human race, have made so many technological advancements to better our lives and improve our environment. However, when it comes to our weapons, it seems we may have gone too far. In the hopes of keeping us safe we ve developed stronger, better weapons. Whether it s to protect us from each other or from others, safety has always been the number one concern. Yet, with the use of nuclear weapons our safety is no longer ensured. A thousand times a thousand, times a thousand is a billion; in less than a century, our most fearful weapon has become a billion times more deadly (Sagan 656). As said by Sagan, our weapons have become exponentially stronger in such a short amount of time. We ve done this under the belief that it ll make us safer when, in fact, we don t really possess the knowledge to use such a destructive force. When it comes to nuclear weapons there is no going back. After the damage has been dealt it can t be undone. Some of them had an explosive yield equivalent to ten million tons of TNT; enough to kill a few million (Sagan 656). We hold the power to kill a few million people, when less than a century ago we only had enough power

In the Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka, Gregor Samsa has recently underwent an enormous transformation that has spark his need for isolation. One example that shows Gregors isolation is when he thinks, Well, leaving out the fact that the doors were locked, should he really call for help? In spite of all his miseries, he could not repress a smile at this thought (Kafka 948 49). Gregor has yet to present himself to anyone, but he feels ever more isolated that before. He is thinking that everyone will reject him and knows the effect that his new body will have on his family. Similar to Gregor, Jay Gatsby,

The first photos of the gothic transition come from the Prairie Images of Ground and Sky collection. The collection shows untouched nature that gives a feeling of the sublime. This feeling is better reflected in the Matfield Green collection that depicts the green expanse that is similar to the Prairie Images of Ground and Sky collection but also includes things such as railroads and power lines that show that the area is populated. This collection adds an aspect of the isolated landscape and fear of isolation because there is a sparse dotting of humans across the large expanse that gives the viewer the knowledge that there are inhabitants around, but not seen or directly noticed. The element of isolation in nature is demonstrated in The Mysteries of Udolpho and The Turn of the Screw by Udolpho and the House at Bly through their setting in isolated landscapes with weak tethers to the rest of civilization. The idea of overcoming this isolation is also present in the novels. Emily in The Mysteries of Udolpho escapes the isolation to safety. The Governess in The Turn of the Screw hopes to do the same by connection with the Man from Harley Street but is not as lucky. The effect of the isolated landscape with an unknown element causes the reader and viewer to become suspicious of their surroundings and uneasy with the sublime landscape due to the possibility that something evil is residing within it and give a more traditional gothic feel. The third collection that completes a gothic picture of the Midwest shows the ruins of the prairie. Steel Work

Out of all the birds that we see lots of in our lives why does it have to be the most noisy, disruptive, ugly birds that populate our city? Wouldn t it be better if we had beautiful, little birds that call with adorable little tweets? Quite frankly, seagulls make the town we live in unwelcoming. With their booming squawks, troublesome rebellious lifestyles and aggressive behaviour; I think that we would do a lot better without them. People say that it gives you good luck to have a bird poop on you, but it is the complete opposite in my opinion. How lucky must one be to have stinky, gooey gunk on their body? Seagulls, being the creatures that they are, just let their load drop whenever they feel the need: landing on cars, buildings, nature and also our washing hanging outside. I remember a particularly wonderful memory when I was walking down the street and a seagull pooped right on the spot where my cheek and hair meet. Which made it much more convenient that I was out with my friends, so I had to ask the nearby shop owners for a tissue to clean it with. It would be so very pleasant to have one day looking at the clear blue sky, rather than the flock of gulls flying above me. Seagulls tend to enjoy hanging out at the beach. You could just be having a nice meal at a cafe with your family, but see them at the next table robbing food. How ridiculous! They did not pay for the food and we don t want them interrupting us

  • 32. The Iliad By Homer And With The Old Breed When reading the Iliad by Homer and With the old Breed by E. B. Sledge, the two stories that revolve around warfare are surprisingly different. Not because of the time period but because of how warfare is viewed in each of these works. In the Iliad, warfare is not only conducted differently but it is viewed as a very heroic and noble thing. Throughout the Iliad, Homer avoids all of the gruesome or evil topics of warfare and simple shows the noble aspects, so much so that he ensures that most of the important characters get a heartfelt and heroic monologue before they die. On the other hand With the old Breed by E. B. Sledge shows warfare to the exact opposite of what Homer has portrayed, a mentally taxing experience that most of the time breaks the soldiers to the point where they would never be the same. According to Shay, The Iliad is a work of poetry, not sociological or historical scholarship (Shay, 121). Seeing as how the Iliad focuses more on only positive aspects of war, Shay is correct in his statement. These two works are vastly different from one another through their descriptions of the various aspects of warfare. One difference of the two works is the kind of weaponry that was used. Not the fact that one book had guns and the other had swords, but the impact of having those types of weapons. In the Iliad, the only kind of long range weapons were bows and arrows which could not shoot too far so you could always see who was attacking you. However, in With the old
  • 33. Descriptive Essay About Breakfast Every morning, my son Pete wakes up at 6:30 AM. I have 2 ВЅ hours to get us both ready for the day, which seems like it should be plenty of time. But each day the nanny arrives at 9, and I m never ready to leave! So I started making these freezable breakfast sandwiches to help me get out the door faster. I m a personal chef, so I m really fast in the kitchen. Before I had Pete, I never really understood why people said that they didn t have time to cook breakfast in the morning. Scrambling an egg takes no time at all! But now I realize, you have to clean the pan, the spatula, your plate, and also eat the eggs with a fork in your kitchen, all while trying to wrangle the baby in the other arm. In this new reality, minutes matter. Finding a quicker breakfast solution So I wanted a quicker and cleaner way to get my fuel in the morning. While oatmeal and granola can be nice occasionally, my go to breakfast will always include eggs. They give me longer lasting energy, plus I almost always prefer savory to sweet. I needed a way to have my eggs quickly, without having to do any of the actual cooking in the morning. Ideally, something that could be made in a big batch and frozen in individual portions. Strata was an early contender. This Vegetable, Egg and Cheddar Strata recipe is one I make for clients often and it freezes beautifully. But there s a lot of up front prep, a long cook time, and it still requires a plate and fork. I also considered quiche, my personal brunch favorite. It didn t make the cut for the same reasons. So then I started thinking of the breakfast sandwiches they serve at Starbucks. They re pre made, pretty tasty, and always hit the spot when I need a quick breakfast. I decided to make my own version that I could enjoy at home for a third of the price per sandwich. The beautiful thing about these breakfast sandwiches is that they are completely customizable. Ham, sausage, bacon, turkey bacon, and veggie sausage are all great options. Cheddar is my favorite cheese choice, but you can use any sliced cheese that melts well. You can even mix cooked veggies into the eggs to increase your morning fiber intake. Once you get the overall method down, it s easy to switch it up. Cooking the Eggs

The Effects of Burning Carbon Dioxide Essay The Effects of Burning Carbon Dioxide The main waste product of fuel we burn is carbon dioxide, which is thought to have been the main factor in the gradual rise of global temperatures of the last hundred years. The rise is called Global Warming . The mechanism used to explain the rise in temperature is the greenhouse effect. Infrared radiation is trapped by atmospheric gases. Sunlight easily passes these gases on it way into the earth s atmosphere but on its way out the gases reflect the radiation back towards earth. Therefore as these gases increases the amount of radiation kept in the atmosphere is increased. Caron dioxide is one of the main green houses gases. Carbon dioxide is a waste product ... Fine metallic nets deployed in the stratosphere should do the trick according to Mr. Teller. This would help slow or even stop global warming. Carbon Monoxide: Carbon monoxide forms during incomplete combustion of hydrocarbons. It is extremely hazardous as things such as gas central heating boilers which are badly maintained can leak the gas causing carbon monoxide poisoning which would result in death. Carbon monoxide reacts irreversibly with haemoglobin. In red blood cells haemoglobin normally reacts with oxygen to form oxyhaemoglobin, which is then transported from our lungs to all our body cells. When carbon monoxide is breathed in it combines with haemoglobin to form carboxyhaemoglobin where the oxygen is not released from the haemoglobin therefore causing a lack of oxygen which can result in death. The solutions to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning are to give the odorless gas a distinct smell so that people can smell when there are gas leaks in their appliances. Another solution is to install carbon monoxide detectors which act in the same way as fire alarms and give off a signal when they detect carbon monoxide. There are other precautions which can be taken such as maintaining your

Once located, this main idea would give you an overview for the supporting statements that you would have to read afterwards. Remember that skimming is used only when your purpose for reading allows you to read for general concepts rather than specific information (McWhorter, 453). • 51. Al Qaed Terrorist Groups Essay Founded by Osama bin Laden around the late 1980 s, one of the largest, most terrifying, terrorist groups known worldwide is the Islamist organization, Al Qaeda. According to the Council on Foreign Relations, Jayshree Bajoria and Greg Bruno examine Al Qaeda as an international terrorist network that seeks to free Muslim countries of profane influence, and replace governments with fundamentalist Islamic regimes. Originating back to around 1988, Al Qaeda grew out of a Service Office, run by Osama bin Laden and Abdullah Azzam. The Services Office would recruit international Muslims from more than fifty countries, training, and financing them into foreign mujahedeen and holy warriors. Although Al Qaeda does not operate at a single headquarters, the bases of all operations are constructed either within Afghanistan, Pakistan or along the boarder (par. 2, 3, 4). Known as one of the most notorious terrorist groups in the world, Al Qaeda is considered a terrorist group because of their ideologues and goals, along with their extreme use of violence. Forming as an effort to support Muslims against the Soviets in the Afghanistan war, developed a strong hatred towards non Islamic governments. As a growing organization, Al Qaeda maintained officers in countries including Pakistan, Afghanistan and the United States. The FBI s Testimony on Al Qaeda presented by J.T Caruso reveals that US citizens were recruited through the Western world to engage in financial transactions and to deliver
  • 52. Global Capitalism And Its Impact On The United States It is not just the arbitrary concepts of capitalism which have a tendency to expand, under the Marxist understanding of the state, capitalist states will make foreign policy decisions for the benefit of global capitalism. The increased intervention by western states in the Marxist view is about the sole purpose of the expansion of capitalismin the search of profit for the companies, using the state as a mobiliser for action towards such an end. Mark Rupert brought forward a case study of such imperialism in action, in the case of the US. Global capitalist activities require huge amounts of energy, and the cheapest or most efficient form is petroleum. Despite not being a democracy and not practising equality, or respecting human rights, all core values to the US, Saudi Arabia remains one of the US s closest allies. If the actions of the US abroad primarily concerned democracy promotion, human rights and core liberal values, this alliance does not make sense, but when you use a Marxist lens, and consider that alliances are about capitalism, you quickly understand why Saudi Arabia, a large producer of oil is a huge geopolitical ally of the US. This also applies to explaining enemies, for example Cuba and Qaddafi s Libya. Cuba on the one hand is one of the few countries which still ideologically rejects capitalism as a form of organising society, which has resulted in a ban on all trade with Cuba. Alternatively, Qaddafi, who was the leader of an oil rich Libya for many years

Summary Of Steven Pinker And The Language Of Instinct Elise Brown 11/23/14 Language and Learning Individual paper: Steven Pinker and The Language of Instinct Language is not a cultural artifact that we learn the way we learn to tell time or how the federal government works. Instead, it is a distinct piece of the biological makeup of our brains. Language is a complex, specialized skill, which develops in the child spontaneously, without conscious effort or formal instruction, is deployed without awareness of its underlying logic, is qualitatively the same in every individual, and is distinct from more general abilities to process information or behave intelligently. For these reasons, some cognitive scientists have described language as a psychological faculty, a mental organ, a neural system, and a computational module. But I prefer the admittedly quaint term instinct (4 5). In the book, The Language ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Pinker describes language as a human instinct and discusses the evolution of language. Pinker, a psychology professor at Harvard University, provides a thorough description of research he has done with children and animals to prove how language is created, how it develops throughout life, and how it came to be in the first place. Much of Pinker s book discusses developments made by Noam Chomsky, an American linguist, and reproduces these developments in a more clear and understandable form. Within The Language Instinct, Pinker discusses many complicated topics like the idea of universal grammar, the separation between language and thought, the difference between oral language and written language and the evolution of language as well as
