Next PLC
Next plc designs, manufactures, and distributes clothing and home furnishing and accessory items to
nearly 330 Next retail stores and through the company s Next Directory mail order sales catalog.
Almost all of Next company owned stores are located in England and Ireland. After ending a brief
international expansion in 1999 the company closed its seven company owned foreign stores,
including its five U.S. retail stores Next has shifted its international strategy to brand expansion
focused on franchising. Next operates franchises in some 20 international markets, especially in the
Middle Eastern and Far East Asian markets. The difficult economic climate in the Asian markets in the
late 1990s has curtailed the Next franchise expansion, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The company would long remain a mainstay of the United Kingdom s high street shopping districts.
Hepworth Son s continued expansion led the company to go public in 1948. By the late 1970s,
however, Hepworth Son had begun to suffer from old age pains and, especially, from its conservative
image. Led by chairman Terence Conran, however, Hepworth Son made a bold move to remake itself
completely at the start of the 1980s.
In 1981 the company acquired the Kendalls retail store chain. The Kendalls chain, with some 80
locations, catered to the womenswear market, complementing the Hepworth Son menswear line. If
Kendalls also complemented Hepworth Son s somewhat stuffy image, the acquisition would serve as a
strong stepping stone for the company s move to transform itself into a full line clothing retailer.
With the Kendalls acquisition, Conran brought in a new chief executive, George Davies, and gave
Davies instructions to reinvent the Kendalls chain. While remaining in the womenswear segment,
Davies turned the company toward sales of company designed and branded merchandise. This
merchandise would be sold under a new name and retail store concept, Next, at the former Kendalls
locations.
The first year of Next brand operations would see a turnover of more than £82 million. By the end of
1982, more than 70 Kendalls locations had been converted to the Next concept. The Next sales

The Juvenile Justice System Is The Primary System Used
The Juvenile Justice System is the primary system used to handle youth who are convicted of criminal
offenses. It is just over 100 years old. Over time it has gone through several changes and its unlikely
to disappear anytime soon. We as Americans are still trying to find different ways to approach juvenile
justice vs. approaching it as adult justice. Throughout most of history, young adults and or children did
not have a separate status between juvenile and adults. Once you reached the ages of 5 or 6, you
became apart of the adult society. There was no separate system for dealing with youth offenders. In
the early 1800s, problems with how to deal with youth offenders began to come about due to society
going through economical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
All juveniles under the age of 16 could be handled by the court. Between 1960s and the 1980s,
attention and speculation began to rise about the concern of the juvenile delinquency and court
system. During this time, this era was characterized by distinctly harsh punishments for youths. They
were also wanting to focus on providing minors with due process and legal counsel in court. Even
though they were trying to provide help to youth offenders, criticism during this time, focused on
racial discrimination, gender disparities and discrimination towards children with mental health
problems or learning disabilities. Through out the years, crime rates rose and the misrepresentation
from the media began around the 1960s and went through the 1980s. Today in America, no population
poses a larger threat to public safety than juvenile offenders. Juvenile justice system deal with three
types of case; Delinquents, status offenders, neglected, abused or dependent youth. Over the years,
many states have established family courts to deal with offenders and cases with the status of neglect.
Throughout the years, there has always been some type of tension between police and young
offenders. In my personal opinion, I think this comes from the music that the youth listens to. Most
state statues provide some guidance for arrest procedures. As an officer, you have the discretion in
deciding when to arrest juvenile offenders.

The Election Of The United States
None of the Above
For the election of the President of the United States of America there should be an option of No
Confidence or None of the Above as a selection on the ballot because the voters should have the right
to indicate that the listed candidates are unacceptable, then the National parties should find and
present new candidates that are more acceptable to the American public if neither can win a majority
vote.
I will explain how the current system for a presidential election is flawed in that if the political parties
present candidates for the election which a voter finds unacceptable, the voter is reduced to voting for
the candidate that they dislike the least or voting for a third party candidate which they know can t
win. In other words, in a two party system, they are voting for the lesser of two evils, or throwing
away their vote as a protest on a third party candidate. An option of None of the Above could paint a
clear picture of growing voter dissatisfaction and encourage the parties to clean up their acts or even
force them to present better candidates in new election.
In the current system a voter can write in None of the Above but few do. They just choose to vote for
one of the third party candidates as a protest or a display of dissatisfaction for the candidates presented
by the two major parties. This is not only a vote that is thrown away, but is also misrepresents the true
voting percentages. For example, let s say that the election shows

The, Contingency, And Game Theory Lenses Essay
Davis Lundberg 1. VRIN, Contingency, and Game Theory Lenses VRIN Resources From a VRIN
perspective, Elizabeth Arden (EA) has at least one intangible asset that is a key source of competitive
advantage: strong brand equity. In the prestige perfumes and cosmetics market, having this key
resource provides an edge over competitors when it comes to understanding, attracting and retaining a
loyal customer base. Furthermore, having a strong brand allows EA to innovate and launch successful
new products and enter new markets. Using VRIN, EA should focus more internally by expanding
product development and maintaining a VRIN brand portfolio to keep up with fast moving trends
within the cosmetics industry. Contingency Theory In contrast to the VRIN framework, contingency
theory focuses on EA s environment and the types of opportunities and threats that the company
should adapt to. The key to contingency theory is that EA scan for first mover opportunities as well as
mitigate potential risks in order to maintain its competitive advantage. EA s greatest opportunity is the
increasing international demand for cosmetics within developing regions. Using the contingency
theory, EA should respond by widening its geographic presence through expansion of its distribution
channels. In relation to the VRIN framework, EA should also respond by leveraging its brand equity
as a VRIN resource to access preferred distribution channels by engaging in new joint ventures,
acquisitions, and

Hplc Analysis of Capsaicin Essay
HPLC Analysis of Capsaicin Eric Sorenson Work Completed on 11/28/12 Quantitative analysis of
Capsaicin was analyzed in three peppers that were expected to differ greatly in their capsaicin content
and thus their relative spiciness. The idea was to have a nice range of capsaicin concentrations to
clearly reflect the subjective pain one experiences from biting into a chili. Fresh Habanero, Jalapeno
and Red Bell Pepper were purchased from the local Family Fresh grocery store to be analyzed via
HPLC. This capsaicin project consisted of three stages to ensure proper and accurate analysis. The
first stage was the preparation of the three samples for injection into the HPLC. One gram of fine
powder of each pepper was obtained by ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
UV lamp detector set at 215 nm. Injection volume of 20 µL and a flow rate of 2.0 mL/min. The total
run time was eight minutes. Solvent A consisted of 100% water with 0.1% TFA. Solvent B was a 80%
ACN/20% water solution with 0.1% TFA. A gradient elution was programmed for 20% to 100%
solvent B in five minutes then return to 20% solvent B for the last three minutes. The last stage of the
project was the actual sample analysis. The HPLC was programmed to run a reinjection of the
calibration standard, a reinjection of the blank, then two injections of each sample A, B and C
respectively under the same conditions as described above. Once the chromatograms were obtained
and assistance from Dr. Marchand was needed in order to identify significant peaks. Calculations were
then done on all three samples to quantitate the amount of capsaicin in each pepper. See calculations
page. The concentration of capsaicin in the habanero pepper was calculated to be 207 µg of capsaicin
per gram of pepper. Jalapeno was 70.9 µg of capsaicin per gram of pepper and red bell pepper was
8.033 µg of capsaicin per gram of pepper. The results of this analysis seemed to live up to my
expectations and what I wanted to demonstrate by analyzing three different peppers spanning a wide
range of capsaicin content. Habanero peppers are notoriously known for their high scoville heat value
and usually one plump habanero pepper

A Case for Olympic Games
Olympic Games and World Unity
The Olympic Games is considered as the biggest sporting event across the globe that attracts a huge
number of participants and viewed by billions of people across the globe. The games not only generate
a great deal of enthusiasm worldwide but it also creates a platform for people from various cultures
and nationalities to interact. The modern Olympic Games were founded in 1896 with high
expectations that they may assist in uniting countries of the world in understanding and peace. These
expectations have formed the basis of the notion that the Olympic Games are still the best platform or
opportunity for the entire world to be united as one. However, the realization of these expectations has
been hindered by the international politics that have relatively never been distanced from the surface.
There are various Olympic Games that have been held in different cities across the globe that have
generated much politics rather than excitement associated with the games themselves. Despite of the
seeming inability to keep the international politics from the surface of these games, they still provide
the best opportunity for the unity of the entire world.
The Case for Olympic Games: As previously mentioned, modern Olympic Games with a history that
stretches back to 1896 were initiated with a view and high hopes of uniting the countries of the world
(Norton, 2008, p. 730). The expectations were mainly driven by that fact that the world was

Crazy Insane
Crazy. Insane. Nuts. All words to describe someone who is mentally ill. But the thing about mental
illness is that it is not physically apparent. In our world it is easier to have a broken bone than a broken
mind. Past and present methods of treating people with mental illness are barbaric, impersonal and a
gross mixture of over and under diagnosing. We as humans have complex brains so it shouldn t come
as a surprise that things sometimes go wrong. But from lobotomies to mental asylums and turning
innocent people with minor conditions into zombies with the use of medication ,the people and system

be removed from society, to a social acceptance that almost diminishes the importance and severity of
mental illness. We need more social programs available for everyone suffering from mental illness and

Liz Holt Strictly Ballroom
The characters in Strictly Ballroom are largely caricatures. This topic will be explored with reference
to the characters Fran and Liz Holt in the film.
Liz Holt is portrayed as the dumb blonde as well as extremely shallow within the film and this is
executed in a variety of ways. Being Scott s dance partner she is used to being in the lime light and her
use of colourful costumes contributes to this too. She wears yellow majority of the time and this is
evident of her character as she is selfish, cowardice and attention seeking. Her make up is also well
overdone further depicting this idea. Liz is also portrayed as the mean girl and drops Scott as her
dance partner the second someone better comes along. Many of the camera angles used ... Show more

She wears many pastels and more dull colours giving us the impression that she is lacking confidence
and is hiding behind her appearance, being her glasses and unattractive clothing. As she progresses
through the film she begins to wear clothing and colours that make a greater statement, however, in
this growth of confidence she does not wear the costumes to attract attention but rather because she is
comfortable with the person that she has become. At first she hides behind her glasses which
stereotypically portrays her as lacking an amount of incite towards given situations. Fran also has
terrible posture, this too is linked to her lack of confidence. She does not take pride in her hair which
shows us how little she cares about her appearance. She develops from being the stereotypical ugly
duckling to a beautiful swan . When we see Fran throughout the movie initially the camera angles that
are used are high angles to show us how inferior and a lot less dominant she is and as she further
develops the use of low angles make her come across as a lot more powerful than what she initially

Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP)
A recently graduated working paramedic is referred to as an Advanced Care Paramedic, or an ACP. An
ACP follows a clinical structure, the first aspect of the format is called a primary survey which
collects all emergency patient information. This compulsory technique aims to identify and control
catastrophic medical events to ensure patients have the best outcome possible (Hodegetts et al., 2011).
When conducting a primary survey of a patient an ACP would follow the basic structure of danger,
response, airway, breathing and circulation; usually shortened into the acronym DRABC (Woo, 2000).
To begin the primary survey, DRABC should be started as soon as possible (QAS reference). It is

Developing Technology Systems From Cyber Criminals

business functions. To effectively compete in a fast paced, multifaceted, global economy,
organizations are employing new technologies at an unprecedented rate. In most cases, either ignoring
or not fully understanding the increased exposure to their business. The difficulty s facing
organizations today in this global market is how they will protect new technology systems from cyber

There could also be a power failures that can disrupt operations. The intention of every organization
should be to have a contingency plan in place throughout its business units to help enterprise business

In addition to continuity planning organizations must maintain a current security policy that enforces
employee training. Human threats either intentionally or unintentional can have a significant effect on
an organization. Physical security is only half the battle organizations must also have those logical
controls in place. Threats come from outside influences that want to penetrate the business the reasons
range from stealing data to hacktivism. As corporations continue to face new risks they also have to
contend with the difficult task of protecting both internal and external customers against identity theft.
Logical controls are used to safeguard against unauthorized access to computing resources. Logical
controls are a combination of hardware and software used to detect and prevent intruders on the
corporate network. There are also detection systems that focus on suspicious activity on the host based
to fight against insider threat. When a company has systems in place to monitor network behavior, it
can flag anomalies in traffic traversing the network. Target Corporation had this type of software

The Golden Age Of Heian

The Golden Age of Heian
Periods of time with peace and stability politically and religiously, paired with flourishing arts, are
called Golden Ages . One thriving, revolutionizing time like this occurred in Heian, Japan from 794 to
1185 C.E., under the rule of the Fujiwara family. Succeeding the Nara period, many aspects of the
Heian culture, such as Buddhism and the writing system, were borrowed from China. However, in this
time, Japan took those preconceived ideas and really made them their own, adding many new ones
along the way. The peace and stability, as well as influential literature greatly contributed to this
period s golden legacy. Poetry during this time, most importantly Lady Murasaki s novel, Tale of
Genji , reflected this time period and forever changed today s writing, making this era a truly
prosperous golden age.
This thriving golden age might have flourished, but it started out small, just like any other era. The
Heian period began when the capital was moved from Nara to Heian, modern day Kyoto. Many noble
families moved along with it (Charles). The Nara period had just ended, and aristocrats violently
fought for power. Therefore, for the sake of peace, that s why the capital was moved. The Fujiwara
family rose to power, and the golden age began. As Japan s second great period of Japanese culture
arose, it brought many accomplishments with it (Fitzgerald).
Peace and stability, especially politically,

Analysis Of Frank And Juliette s Music
Frank and Juliette, both discussed their own spiritual experiences, or version of as being related to
music. This presents the idea that music,in some ways, could be a secular alternative to religious
practices and understandings or simply a way of experiencing spirituality in secular spheres.
Frank:... listen to songs where I ve felt emotions and feelings that run past the specific context of the
song ... this applies to more of my life than it should... a lot of people have had that with music...
Ideas of transcendence and deep personal connection are apparent here.
Juliette: Concert, not a gig ... a concert where you ve been a fan for ages. There s all these people, you
re all in the same vibe... this person that you like, idolised. . . Florence and The Machine, her music is
very spiritual... it s really deep...and relatable. . . . I don t know if I d call myself spiritual because I go
to concerts and feel deep about it.
. . . I guess [I listen to music] pretty much every day . . . If you compare it to religion, is like praying
every day and then going to Church. So like, listening to music every day and then going to the
concert.
Initiation into a subculture, reflects initiation into religious rituals, thus, similar themes of spirituality
emerge. Participants can accept or reject concepts of spirituality upon attending a subcultural gig. This
is the space where individuals are most likely to engage with meaning in the music, captivate feelings

Dorigen s Pledge With Aurelius
Dorigen s Pledge With Aurelius has Trapped her In a World of Pain I will be looking at the Franklin s
tale, lines 1359 66 and 1479 86. In the first passage Dorigen is torn between sleeping with Aurelius an
act of infidelity, and kill herself to keep from staining her body. Her conflict is due to her having given
her word to both Aurelius and Arviragus (foolishly and willingly). In the second passage, Arviragus
tells his wife to keep her promise with Aurelius and then threatens to kill her if she tells anyone about
the act she will be committing. It is the third promise that puts her in the tension about not knowing
what to do.

and indecisiveness. As Dorigen states, I levere and my body, she reiterates her uncertainly on her
pledge with Aurelius and how she has to choose to sacrifice her body or her marriage (1360 61).
Dorigen does not have a clue about what step to take. She recapitulates how this tension is cluttered
with unending confusion and indecisiveness about what actions to take, the pledge she made and her
life, which ties back to her husband, who is part of her life. She is in constant conflict with herself as
she repeats herself in her words stating, myselven...my name...my deeth (1362 63). Dorigen s
repetition of my increases the tension among herself as she continues her own conversation of what to
do with herself and weighing all results. She swings back and forth unsteadily, with no good place to
fall back

In this chapter Jalan! Jalan! , there are so many small details which help the reader to understand what
Carl Hoffman is doing and what is he going through. There are so many facts in this chapter about
Indonesian. On page 124, in the middle of the page, he talks about facts of the two ferries sunk and it
killed more than 800 people and many more facts. I just say the few things about this that Indonesia is
huge but not only Indonesia, there are so many other countries in Asia which thousand of people died
every day because of this type of accidents. This is really sad because people take risk and government
do nothing about it.
Then on the next page, Carl Hoffman talks about aviation s disaster, including Air Flight KI 574,

the 6th day. Until then more than 1000 of people were dead, people lost their house and their shop and

Factors in Calculating Emissions
ANSWER 1:
I have noticed that I can make significant reductions to my carbon footprint by making some small
changes in the following aspects:
a) Heating Cooling: Insulating and caulking the roof/walls, ventilation and shading/awning can reduce
the usage heating and cooling systems, which reduce carbon emissions significantly. Having efficient
Energy star rated equipment also helps.
b) Refrigeration: Maintaining the freezer (above 15 degrees Celsius) and fridge temperatures (between
3 and 5 degrees Celsius). With some proper planning, I can ensure that the fridge is not stuffed with
food and food is cooled before being put in the fridge, which reduces the load and time for the motor
to run.
c) Food and Shopping: Reducing the consumption of meat, dairy products like cheese and take away
food seems to bring large reductions in carbon emissions for me
ANSWER 2:
The Greenhouse emissions are calculated separately for direct and indirect emissions. For direct
emissions, carbon emissions are calculated using (Direct) Emission Factors for each fuel type, which
is the ratio of carbon dioxide generated for a given quantity of fuel. Indirect emissions from electrical
power consumption are estimated through the use of (Electrical) Indirect emission factor, which is
varies based on the method of the electricity purchased or consumed. This number varies by region
and location.

Hearing Concepts Of Group Dynamics Essay
Within Group Dynamics, there are many factors that goes into structured group, and as an observer I
feel this was a very rewarding experience. I feel that hearing concepts of group dynamics, and then
seeing the concepts in action expands an individual s knowledge on the subject. Seeing the leadership
s skill and the processes of a facilitator can influence aspiring facilitators, and give them the
experience they need. For my structured group, I decided to go to Greenleaf, and observe an
adolescent depression group. This was most definitely a treatment group, because its main focus was
looking at meeting the participant s goals, which was to decrease depressive thoughts and behaviors.
This therapeutic group worked as an inpatient facility, and I think this is different from most other
treatment groups. It s different, because it was dealing with adolescents struggling with depression,
and had an indefinite stay at Greenleaf. There are many factors and concepts from our class present in
this treatment group. One of the first concepts that I found in this group was its group work values.
Many of the participants found a positive value from coming to the group. This makes handling
groups easier, because it causes less stress on the facilitator to keep control of derailers and whiners.
Another group value that I saw was that cooperation and democracy. I feel like this ideal was
embodied in each group member, because from my perception they felt as though they had thought

Nanacha s Digger
There is a fierce competition going on every night in the woods, a secret ritualistic meeting of
disenfranchised businessmen. Each armed with a shovel they challenge is to dig for as long as you
can. The nightly competition attracts a nameless and silent protagonist, an office worker who spends
his days fantasizing about the act of digging. He must face some fierce competition in order to make it
to the top and beat the man who silently watches over the event. Digger is an example that in the
world of the absurd anything can become a competition. This short film which features no dialogue
and a lot of digging is more fun in execution than concept. The late night rituals the men perform in
the short makes it feel as if this is just an event that has been and always will be, steeped in a deep
tradition with synchronized dances and an unspoken language that you have to dig to prove your
worth. Although it is hard to imagine this drawn out into feature length as a short film it is very
successful at creating this odd, funny yet endearing culture of a bunch of businessmen digging holes in
the middle of the forest while being cheered on by their peers. Digger is a comedic gem with an ideal
runtime that is bound to entertain audiences. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

On the Matter of Hell

The Collective Inferno: A Look into Dante and Others Views on Hell Though for some a subject far
too heavy to be spoken of but in hushed tones, Hell has been the topic of much debate and speculation
by theologians and philosophers, both Christian and otherwise. They have pondered such questions as
whether or not hell is a real place, and if so whether it is divided into different sections or if it is one
homogenous lake of fire. Even for those who may not believe in Hell, the idea of a place of eternal
torment as punishment for ones sins is a fascinating one. It causes one to contemplate the nature of sin
and humanity, whether some sins are worse than others, and if so, does ... Show more content on

However, in the original Hebrew writings, the usage of hell in these verses refers to sheol, or the
grave. The Greek word for hell, genna, occurs only 11 times in the Bible, none of which refer to a
place under the Earth. In fact, all the references to under the Earth refer to either sheol (Hebrew) or its
Greek equivalent (Hades). (Deem) Perhaps, then, damnation does not take place in the center of the
earth. Either way, such was the belief of many in the Christian and political world throughout Europe,
as seen in the Inferno.
Whether or not certain sins are more grievous than others, all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God. (Romans 3:23) Eternal torment of any degree is undesirable, and can be avoided through
repentance and acceptance of Christ s grace. However, it is a worth topic of study, and helps us as we
are to find meaning in God s word, and the writings of Classical authors such as Dante. Lastly, it aids
in refining our meaning of sin and helping us to improve our morality, a daunting task for believers

Japanese Internment Camp
Photograph #1 shows a large group of Japanese Americans lining up behind a table, for what appears
to be their registration into a Japanese internment camp. Within the group, you can see looks of
confusion and distress on most of the adult faces, as well as looks of confusion and crying from the
children. Many of the Japanese Americans are carrying few belongings other than the man to the left
with one bag in his hand, and the woman in front of him who has an item in her hands; it is implied
that after registering their names with the United States government representatives at the table, they
will be sent to the internment camps with what they have. With the confusion on their faces as well, it
could be assumed that some people did not even know that they could take belongings with them to
the camps. It could also be assumed that many in the line are not sure why they have to register in
these camps, as they have been living normal American lives up until this point in 1942. The idea for
these camps was brought on by propaganda, creating fears amongst not only regular citizens, but
government officials as well ( Japanese American Internment 2016). Over 127,000 Japanese
Americans were imprisoned when the camps had first been developed, up until the last camp was

The Striped Blanket
In 1911 Louie B. Felt was walking through the park when she saw a handicapped child. After seeing
the handicapped child it inspired Louie to dedicate a hospital to help children. That hospital is now
called Primary Children s Hospital. Thousands of individual children receive extraordinary care each
year at Primary Children s, provided in an atmosphere of love.
Primary Children s Hospital had been serving in the Salt lake City area since the early twentieth
centuries. The hospital first began as a church sponsored organization that opened a 33 bed facility.
The 33 bed facility opened in an old home that was located across the road form the Latter Day Saints
temple square. When the hospital first opened its doors it was called the LDS hospital due to the fact
that it was sponsored by the LDS church( History Primary Children s Hospital).
When the children would have their surgeries they would be done at the main hospital and soon after
they were done they would be moved to the primary facility to heal. If a patient was critically ill or
chronic they would be hospitalized in the main hospital. If the patient was hospitalized the parents
would rarely get to see their child which was heartbreaking. Parents weren t allowed to see their child
due to the chance of infections or diseases. When the hospital first opened it had to be very careful
with diseases because medicine was not as advanced as it is now. (History Primary Children s

Character Analysis Of Hippolytus
The play Hippolytus was written by Euripides, the same writer as the play in Medea. In some ways,
this is a story of lies and misunderstandings. I don t really have a character that I liked the most, I
thought that Hippolytus, Phaedra, and Theseus all have different good and bad, likeable and unlikable
traits. At the first part of the play, we are introduced to Aphrodite. She is the goddess of love and
something. In her introduction, she also mentioned the part of the problem which cause all the event to
start. Aphrodite took notice on one of the mortals who disrespects her greatly Hippolytus, who said
that Aphrodite is was the worst of all gods. Hippolytus, who vowed to himself to never marry a
woman, worships the virgin goddess Artemis instead. But what fuels Aphrodite s anger is that
Hippolytus has no disrespect for the goddess of love. As a god, I think this is a great insult to their
power, especially to an Olympian gods and gods whom are loved by many. Because of that, Aphrodite
decides to punish Hippolytus and started her plan. Next, enter Hippolytus, the child of Theseus and the
Amazonian, Hippolyta. In the beginning, Hippolytus doesn t seem to be an arrogant man, he seemed
to be an honorable and honored the gods properly, mainly Artemis. But, when the goddess Aphrodite
was mentioned, his distaste of women started to peak out of the cover. But I think his point of view
comes from spotlighting the negative things of women. When the Nurse went against the Queen s
wishes, Hippolytus mentioned how stupid women wouldn t be so much trouble while smart women
(maybe like Medea) would go behind their husband s back and plot some things while the servant
execute the plot. Other characteristics of Hippolytus that made him such a likeable character in the
play was that he is an honorable man. After the horrifying fact given by the Nurse, and the accusation
from his father of defiling Theseus marriage bed, Hippolytus still kept his oath to stay quiet. Even
when he was exiled and his reasoning were all rejected Hippolytus goes willingly. Phaedra is
somewhat the main victim of the play, even though it can easily be argued that Hippolytus is the main
victim. From the reading, I think Phaedra s main fault was to

The Invention Of Television Has Impacted American Society
I. Introduction:
The first commercial to ever air in America was a 10 second ad for Bulova clocks and watches. This
commercial cost nine dollars. Today, a typical commercial costs around two hundred dollars to a
thousand dollars (Luckin). Both society and television have drastically changed from when television
was first invented to today. Few inventions have had as big of an impact on American society as the
television has. The invention of television has impacted American society positively, because it helps
spread information faster and influences the way people think about important social issues, it
provides cultural experiences and can help broaden viewer s perspectives, and it entertains and brings
communities together.
II. Background:
The invention of television did not happen overnight. Different experiments by various inventors and
scholars immersed in the fields of electricity and rado resulted in the development of the basic
technologies and ideas that later became the groundwork for the invention of television ( The History
Of Television ). Paul Nipkow was one of the first inventors that had a huge impact on the future
invention of television. Paul discovered television s scanning principle, which is when the light
intensities of small portions of an image are analyzed and transmitted. In 1884, Nipkow invented a
rotating disk, with one or more spirals of openings that passed across a picture, called the Nipkow disk
( Paul Gottlieb Nipkow ). This invention

To What Extent Was Alexander The Innovator
Alexander the Innovator Alexander III of Macedon, the innovator, created new and most time better
ways to complete a task. From figuring out how to defeat an opponent with a herd of elephants, to
being able to conquer what was believed to be unconquerable, Alexander the Innovator could innovate
a technique that would bring success. For example, in order for Alexander and his troops to cross the
Hydaspes River, Alexander had to think of a way in which they will get by the elephants. According to

Eventually, Porus no longer reacted, therefore Alexander and his troops were able to cross the river.
The distraction in which Alexander created occured because he devised an idea, which was not done
or even attempted before, to have success. Furthermore, the innovations Alexander III of Macedon
generated did not stop here. While Alexander was conquering, many cities would surrender without a
fight. However, when in came to Tyre, a majority of citizens refused to surrender. Explained in
Document C The Destruction of Tyre, Alexander had ordered that all [expect] those who; sought

During the process of conquering cities, which Alexander treated rather kindly, had a problem with
Tyre. The citizens of Tyre declined to surrender, thus forcing Alexander to determine a way in which
he will conquer Tyre. After some time, Alexander organized a procedure that would allow Alexander
to conquer Tyre. Alexander put his plan in the test, buildings were burned and seven thousand Tyrians
died. Over a period of time, the city of Tyre was utterly destroyed, remaining survivors were either

Gracile Features
Introduction
The more gracile features that denote a female typically include the smaller size or often nonexistence
of certain features found on the skeleton including but not limited to the nuchal crest, mastoid process,
and brow ridges. Also, the average height of a female is shorter than that of the average male. Due to
this difference in skeletal structure, most of the bones in the female skeleton should in some form be
sexually dimorphic. The trend of smaller features is of course excluding the pelvic girdle, on which
most female features are larger and rounder due to the skeletal requirements of childbirth. Given the
above statement, it is reasonable to predict that there would be a distinguishable difference between
the metacarpal of a male and a female. Studies have proved that metacarpals are sexually dimorphic,
and can be used to identify the sex of a skeleton in both Egyptian and Tai populations. Due to these
past studies, it is logical to assume that the same sexually dimorphism can be found in the European
population. If successful this study could develop an algorism to help determine the sex from just a
single bone. This advancement in our knowledge of sex identification could propel cases, in which the
sex of the induvial was undeterminable from the bones recovered.

The Importance Of Building A Rapport And Earning Trust Is...
African American women generally have mistrust for therapists or a fear for being stigmatized when
being treated for mental illness or AOD disorders. Unfortunatly, almost 25% or 7.5 million African
Americans have been diagnosed with a mental illness (Ward, Clark, Heidrich, 2009, p.1589). The
scope of the problem will be discussed in this paper and statistical information will also be provided
regarding the African American population. Many African Americans, especially in rural
communities, do not seek treatment for psychiatric mental health disorders, including AOD disorders,
and when they do seek treatment it is often with primary care providers (Boyd, Berger, Baliko,
Tavakoli, 2009, p.383). This paper will provide information regarding the signs and symptoms of
addiction and the barriers to treatment for the African American population. The importance of
building a rapport and earning trust is essential for retaining the African American population in
treatment.
Scope of Problem African American women that have substance abuse issues are related to severe
problems that may stem from childhood. African American women are more likely to use the most
severely addictive drugs and incur the highest rate of drug use related emergencies and alcohol use
mortalities (Davis Ancis, 2012, p.662). Some research concluded that African American women use
substances as a response to stressful life events that may have been grounded in their adolescence.

Qhetorical Analysis Of Isabella Bird s Lake Tahoe
Journalist, Isabella Bird, in her journal, Lake Tahoe, expresses her feelings about Lake Tahoe and the
journey there. Bird s purpose is to outline her trip and journey to Lake Tahoe. She adopts a nostalgic
tone in order to express her feelings to her readers.
Bird opens her journal, on September second, by describing what Lake Tahoe looks like in her eyes. It
was not lovable, like the Sandwich Islands, but beautiful in it s own way! she is saying that Lake
Tahoe is not beautiful in looks however, it is more beautiful than what meets the eye. Lake Tahoe is
before me, a sheet of water twenty two miles long by ten broad, and in some places 1,700 feet deep. It
lies at a height of 6,000 feet and the snow crowned summits which wall it in are from 8,000 to 11,000
feet in altitude. The air is keen and elastic. There is no sound but the distant and slightly musical ring
of the lumberman s axe. She is describing how Lake Tahoe looks and the atmosphere. Bird is
describing her emotions about Lake Tahoe by using diction with the words keen and elastic when
describing the air.
Shifting to the journey to Lake Tahoe Bird uses comparison by using details that describe what she
sees on her journey to Lake Tahoe. driving to the Oakland ferry through streets with side walks heaped
with thousands of cantaloupe and water melons, tomatoes, cucumbers, squashes, pears, grapes,
peaches, apricots all of startling size as compared with any I ever saw before. Other streets were piled

Building A Montessori Trade School Essay
I have been super interested in Africa since I was a young child. I used to watch the National
Geographic channel and documentaries more than cartoon network or the Disney channel starting at
around the age of six years old. I believe this greatly contributed to my fascination for the cradle of
civilization and indigenous societies. Hopefully one day I plan to build a Montessori trade school
somewhere in Africa teaching aquaponics, organic farming, coding, CAD and other specialized trades.
Therefore, I chose the ancient ruins of the Great Zimbabwe to learn more about the people and history
of South Africa.
The city s name comes from the Shona term dzimbabwe which means houses of stone. The Great
Zimbabwe Ruins are made of hand hewn granite and are located five hundred miles north of Victoria

size which is equivalent to one thousand eight hundred acres. It is the largest ancient structure south of
the Sahara Desert. The ruins are made up of three main structures. The Hill Complex, The Great
Enclosure and The Valley Ruins. The people of Great Zimbabwe most likely worshipped Mwari the
most powerful god in the Shona religion. The Hill Complex is believed to have been the spiritual and

Margaret Atwood Rape Fantasies
From phrases boys will be boys to she was asking for it society creates a blase approach to the topic of
rape and makes people feel ashamed and inadequate when it does happen. These phrases perpetuate
rape culture and makes it possible for this crime rate to remain high. In 1977, Margaret Atwood
published Rape Fantasies in Dancing Girls, a collection of short stories. Atwood spins a story
revolving around one woman, Estelle, and her coworkers. The co workers tell their fantasies about
rape when in actuality it s only anonymous sex and Estelle calls them out on this. She then tells her
fantasies which are about her thwarting the rapist. Rape Fantasies creates a reverse in the definition

Estelle, the narrator, contradicts her colleagues by telling them their fantasies are too safe and sexual
to be actual rape fantasies, but her fantasies were a different kind of safe. They gave Estelle the power
and allowed for her to be in control of the situations. The rapists were very accommodating in that. In
her first fantasy, Estelle thwarts the rapist by using a plastic lemon, but the rapist helps thwart himself.
So I hand it to him and he s very obliging, he twists the top off and hands it back to me, and I squirt
him in the eye (Atwood 105). The rapist is too obliging in this scenario which shows Estelle s naivety
and innocence. Truly, Estelle s rapists are as unrealistically obliging and polite as her coworkers
rapists were romantically accommodating (Walter). This is done because she does not was to admit
what she fears. Her own mother gave the advice that one shouldn t dwell on unpleasant things
(Atwood 108). Estelle takes this too seriously and in doing so she makes her fantasies too safe in fear
that she won t admit she has. Estelle may not want to admit it, but she humanized her rapists, so that
she does not live in terror (Walter). The rapists humanization is humorous and this is also a coping
mechanism for Estelle. When describing her boss, Estelle says I m sure he couldn t rape his way out of
a paper bag, poor old thing (Atwood 110).

Argumentative Essay On Technology
Technology Research When people think about the word technology, most people think about
computers, cell phones, ipads, and the latest versions we are lucky enough to play with if we are
willing to pay the high price. Technology such as computers, have been around since the early 1940 s.
According to Spicer, the first computer made was called The Z3, built by German engineer, Konrad
Zuse. The Z3 computer was used for aerodynamic calculations, but was later destroyed in a bombing
in 1943. Technology has always been a benefit for physical education and special education classes.
Rosengard stated on the SPARK website, that Teaching physical education can be challenging for any
number of reasons, from a lack of equipment to keeping students engaged. He later then stated that To
meet these challenges, some educators are turning to technology to create more dynamic classes that
work for students with a wide range of fitness levels. Physical education classes have been lucky to be
able to use pedometers, heart rate monitors, stopwatches, etc to be able to physically see and record
how healthy their body is. When physical education classes started, teachers were lucky enough to
have a pencil, notepad, and a clock on the wall that they used for a stopwatch. Before technology
exploded, it was hard to record much of the information we are able to record and chart with
technology today. With nearly 100% of public schools and colleges having access to the internet,

Supernatural Intervention In H. P. Lovecraft s Dagon
Divinely Inspired or Divinely Insane: Supernatural Intervention in Literature Throughout various
genres of literature, divine or mystical intervention has played a pivotal role in revealing truths to
man. In many cases, these truths prove to be too complex for the human mind to comprehend,
resulting in characters to slowly become insane. The characters of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and
Hamlet from their respective Shakespeare plays as well as the unnamed narrator in H.P. Lovecraft s
short story Dagon express this belief as they each struggle to maintain sanity after their experiences
with powerful, unknown forces. Supernatural beings play significant roles in several of Shakespeare s
plays, but take on detrimental roles in many of his tragedies. They can be seen most prominently in
what can coincidentally be considered his two most famous tragedies, Macbeth and Hamlet. While
paranormal beings appear in forms of the Weird Sisters in Macbeth and the ghost of King Hamlet in
Hamlet, John Gibson argues that they contribute to their plots differently. In his essay, Shakespeare s
Use of the Supernatural, he argues that Hamlet s supernatural elements confirm a truth from the past,
whereas in Macbeth to the future. Dr. John Charles ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the first act of Scene Five, she believes that she can see and smell blood on her hands, constantly
washing away stains that are not actually there. This blood could symbolize the possible recognition
of wrongdoing that she feels after the deaths of Duncan, Banquo and others who were murdered
because of her actions. Soon after this scene, Lady Macbeth is found dead. The cause of death is
heavily alluded towards suicide although it is left ambiguous. The death of Lady Macbeth mirrors the
death of Duncan that was committed in order to fuel her desire for power. (Van

Tc Morrie Humor
While doing an Interview for the nightline show; the reporter compliments Morrie, You look fine .
Morrie replied, unexpected from a dying person, was That s what everyone tells me . The importance
of humor is the most familiar way in which reframing is used. We tend to see problems like problems,
but humor helps us see situations differently through amusing lens. Your emotions can easily shift and
your effectiveness increase, while bringing humor to your perceptions. Morrie used his humor as a
weapon to battle his illness. While chatting with Mitch, he mentioned that someone pretty soon was
going to have to swipe my ass... after all, I get to be a baby one more time . Humor helped him to
reframe his life after illness. It was like a pain killer, humor can do that and more! Through laughter
you are able to relieve stress, depression, pain, recover, and increase your immune system. Every time
that Morrie was asked about his illness and the effects, he would always answer with a joke. He wasn t
making fun of him, or offending people; rather he was having fun in the long process of death.

When he was younger, they two would spend hours chatting. Mitch would tell him his sorrows, or
whatever would come to mind. Morrie would sit there to listen what he had to say. An active listener,
also known as reflective listening, is a person that gives the speaker nonjudgmental responses as a way
of checking the accuracy of what you have heard, and whether you fully understand the message the
speaker is trying to communicate. An active listener does not interrupt the speaker, rather they wait
until they finish clarifying that they understood the main points. Also, they give honest, immediate,
and supportive responses. Mitch would always wait until the end of their conversations just to hear his

The Association Between Moral Foundation and Political...
The association between moral foundation and political orientation in Australia: Do the American
studies carry over to an Australian Population? HAYDEN TIPPING 100594202 Swinburne University
of Technology Psych 101 Assesment 1 Due Date: 31st August 2015 Tutorial: Thursday 4.30 5.30
Introduction Political preferences seem an obvious topic of research, as the findings of such research
are highly sought after. As such any research relating to what motivates political orientation would be
very useful. For this reason a great deal of research into the relationship between moral foundation and
political orientation has been done in recent years. For this study political orientation is measured
using a 7 point scale from liberal to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Whereas a strongly conservatives averaged neutral on Ingroup / loyalty statements, while agreeing
with fairness / Reciprocity, Harm / Care and Purity / Sanctity and strongly agreeing with Authority /
Respect(Graham, Haidt and Nosek 2009). In an earlier paper Haidt and Graham(2007) found that for
extreme liberals, Harm / Care and Fairness / Reciprocity where almost always relivent, however those
who are extremely conservative find that they value all five more equally when making moral choice.
This correlates almost perfectly with the earlier paper from Graham, Haidt and Nosek(2009), showing
that the findings seem highly reliable. Haidt and Graham(2007) go on to say that the recognition of the
final three moral foundations(Ingroup / Loyalty, Authority / Respect and Purity / Sanctity) is key to
allowing more fair and even discussions between the two political standpoints. Furthering on this
Tyran (2004) found that when a person is presented with a voting option in a referendum where the
result would be of financial cost to themselves, but would be morally right, specifically relevant to the
Harm / Care and Fairness / Reciprocity foundations, voters tended to vote for the morally right option.
This demonstrates that the connection between moral

NASA Persuasive Essay
David J. Eicher, editor of Astronomy magazine, said, The next time you reach for your phone, thank
NASA. If your doctor recommends an MRI, thank NASA...And think of NASA when a smoke
detector blares to save your life (Leone). NASA has helped to advance technology and educate the
human race ever since it was founded. NASA was there to protect humans and warn them of an
asteroid that could have wiped out the human race, and even, most of the things people use everyday
are thanks to NASA. If the government funds NASA, then we will push human knowledge and strive
to learn more about space and continue to push technology s borders. The government should fund
NASA to extend our knowledge on space, keep Earth out of danger, and to encourage the study ...

If the government does not fulfill NASA s needs, science and math with eventually fall. NASA needs
to be revived to focus our minds on math and science. Scientists can possibly discover more elements,
which will draw the attention to current scientists and hopefully draw the public to look for jobs in the
science/math field. Jobs in these fields are the most important, and hardest jobs. Everything in the
universe is centered on math and science. Without it, we are nothing. More and more jobs in theses
areas are being taken each day and NASA needs their help. One article says that NASA was not
created solely for the purpose of scientific research. Part of its objective is to eventually colonize
space ( It is impossible to colonize space in the first place. The universe it massive and it is too much
for NASA to do that. NASA s goal is to learn as much as they can about space and earth while they
have the time. They care more about science and discovery than beating other countries to certain
landmarks/challenges. The revival of NASA will catch everyone s attention and bring back thousands
of jobs that were lost when they shut down in

Social Media On Real World Friendships And Interactions
Social media does impede on real world friendships and interactions because it takes away from one
on one emotional experience with close friends which is vital for a happier and healthier life. Social
media is ruining true friendships and conversation. Social media takes away from face to face
relationships that are so important. Face to face relationships requires commitment, time, and
nurturing. Social media sites impede on relationships by threating true friendships. Face to face
relationships are very important because through contact we are getting live interaction, trust, honesty,
and integrity. Face to face conversations are more positive and more reliable than friendships online.
In cyber space you convers ate with friends but some will not acknowledge the friendship in public.
Social media is slowly taking away from face to face relationships, because we contact our family and
friends on the computer screen. We are typing while looking at the screen instead of seeing facial
expressions. Therefore, we aren t sure if they are interpreting what we are saying in a negative or
positive way. Social media such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, Instagram, and Flicker was invented
to keep us in touch and keep us closer to our family and friends. But according to How Facebook ruins
Friendships we took our friendship online (Bernstein). First we began communicating more by email
than by phone and then switched to instant messaging or texting. By joining social Medias online

The Media And Popular Culture
Media and Popular Culture Popular culture is different from traditional culture; it is based on the
timeline of the significant characteristics of a culture. Popular culture is the ideas, attitudes, thinking,
memes, images, and other phenomena that are in the mainstream of a given culture, especially the
western culture in the early 20th century to the middle 20th century and the emerging global
mainstream in the early 20th and the 21st century. Deeply influenced by the mass media, this
collection of ideas permeates daily life of the society (Wikipedia 2014). Mass media is conceived and
designed to reach a very large media audience. It may need to be in the form of broadcast media, in
television and radio, or print media, such as newspapers and magazines. Internet media can also obtain
the status of the mass media; actually, with so many ways out there provided by internet media, mass
media has been more accessible than ever before. Some people also call it the mainstream media ,
refer to the fact that it tends to give prominent coverage to the news that are cater for the interest of the
public, while ignores the controversial news. Most people around the world are dependent on
mainstream sources for most of their news, so globally, it has already been a huge industry. But there
could be some problems with mass means too, as it could devour the diversity and have negative
effect on popular culture.
The continuous development of communication technology, especially the

Almost all of Next company owned stores are located in England and Ireland. After ending a brief international expansion in 1999 the company closed its seven company owned foreign stores, including its five U.S. retail stores Next has shifted its international strategy to brand expansion focused on franchising. The company would long remain a mainstay of the United Kingdom s high street shopping districts. Hepworth Son s continued expansion led the company to go public in 1948. By the late 1970s, however, Hepworth Son had begun to suffer from old age pains and, especially, from its conservative image. Led by chairman Terence Conran, however, Hepworth Son made a bold move to remake itself completely at the start of the 1980s. In 1981 the company acquired the Kendalls retail store chain. The Kendalls chain, with some 80 locations, catered to the womenswear market, complementing the Hepworth Son menswear line. If Kendalls also complemented Hepworth Son s somewhat stuffy image, the acquisition would serve as a strong stepping stone for the company s move to transform itself into a full line clothing retailer. With the Kendalls acquisition, Conran brought in a new chief executive, George Davies, and gave Davies instructions to reinvent the Kendalls chain. While remaining in the womenswear segment, Davies turned the company toward sales of company designed and branded merchandise. This merchandise would be sold under a new name and retail store concept, Next, at the former Kendalls locations. The first year of Next brand operations would see a turnover of more than £82 million. By the end of 1982, more than 70 Kendalls locations had been converted to the Next concept. The Next sales ... • 3. The Juvenile Justice System Is The Primary System Used The Juvenile Justice System is the primary system used to handle youth who are convicted of criminal offenses. It is just over 100 years old. Over time it has gone through several changes and its unlikely to disappear anytime soon. We as Americans are still trying to find different ways to approach juvenile justice vs. approaching it as adult justice. Throughout most of history, young adults and or children did not have a separate status between juvenile and adults. Once you reached the ages of 5 or 6, you became apart of the adult society. There was no separate system for dealing with youth offenders. In the early 1800s, problems with how to deal with youth offenders began to come about due to society going through economical ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... All juveniles under the age of 16 could be handled by the court. Between 1960s and the 1980s, attention and speculation began to rise about the concern of the juvenile delinquency and court system. During this time, this era was characterized by distinctly harsh punishments for youths. They were also wanting to focus on providing minors with due process and legal counsel in court. Even though they were trying to provide help to youth offenders, criticism during this time, focused on racial discrimination, gender disparities and discrimination towards children with mental health problems or learning disabilities. Through out the years, crime rates rose and the misrepresentation from the media began around the 1960s and went through the 1980s. Today in America, no population poses a larger threat to public safety than juvenile offenders. Juvenile justice system deal with three types of case; Delinquents, status offenders, neglected, abused or dependent youth. Over the years, many states have established family courts to deal with offenders and cases with the status of neglect. Throughout the years, there has always been some type of tension between police and young offenders. In my personal opinion, I think this comes from the music that the youth listens to. Most state statues provide some guidance for arrest procedures. As an officer, you have the discretion in deciding when to arrest juvenile offenders. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Election Of The United States None of the Above For the election of the President of the United States of America there should be an option of No Confidence or None of the Above as a selection on the ballot because the voters should have the right to indicate that the listed candidates are unacceptable, then the National parties should find and present new candidates that are more acceptable to the American public if neither can win a majority vote. I will explain how the current system for a presidential election is flawed in that if the political parties present candidates for the election which a voter finds unacceptable, the voter is reduced to voting for the candidate that they dislike the least or voting for a third party candidate which they know can t win. In other words, in a two party system, they are voting for the lesser of two evils, or throwing away their vote as a protest on a third party candidate. An option of None of the Above could paint a clear picture of growing voter dissatisfaction and encourage the parties to clean up their acts or even force them to present better candidates in new election. In the current system a voter can write in None of the Above but few do. They just choose to vote for one of the third party candidates as a protest or a display of dissatisfaction for the candidates presented by the two major parties. This is not only a vote that is thrown away, but is also misrepresents the true voting percentages. For example, let s say that the election shows ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The, Contingency, And Game Theory Lenses Essay Davis Lundberg 1. VRIN, Contingency, and Game Theory Lenses VRIN Resources From a VRIN perspective, Elizabeth Arden (EA) has at least one intangible asset that is a key source of competitive advantage: strong brand equity. In the prestige perfumes and cosmetics market, having this key resource provides an edge over competitors when it comes to understanding, attracting and retaining a loyal customer base. Furthermore, having a strong brand allows EA to innovate and launch successful new products and enter new markets. Using VRIN, EA should focus more internally by expanding product development and maintaining a VRIN brand portfolio to keep up with fast moving trends within the cosmetics industry. Contingency Theory In contrast to the VRIN framework, contingency theory focuses on EA s environment and the types of opportunities and threats that the company should adapt to. The key to contingency theory is that EA scan for first mover opportunities as well as mitigate potential risks in order to maintain its competitive advantage. EA s greatest opportunity is the increasing international demand for cosmetics within developing regions. Using the contingency theory, EA should respond by widening its geographic presence through expansion of its distribution channels. In relation to the VRIN framework, EA should also respond by leveraging its brand equity as a VRIN resource to access preferred distribution channels by engaging in new joint ventures, acquisitions, and ... Hplc Analysis of Capsaicin Essay HPLC Analysis of Capsaicin Eric Sorenson Work Completed on 11/28/12 Quantitative analysis of Capsaicin was analyzed in three peppers that were expected to differ greatly in their capsaicin content and thus their relative spiciness. The idea was to have a nice range of capsaicin concentrations to clearly reflect the subjective pain one experiences from biting into a chili. Fresh Habanero, Jalapeno and Red Bell Pepper were purchased from the local Family Fresh grocery store to be analyzed via HPLC. This capsaicin project consisted of three stages to ensure proper and accurate analysis. The first stage was the preparation of the three samples for injection into the HPLC. A gradient elution was programmed for 20% to 100% solvent B in five minutes then return to 20% solvent B for the last three minutes. The last stage of the project was the actual sample analysis. The HPLC was programmed to run a reinjection of the calibration standard, a reinjection of the blank, then two injections of each sample A, B and C respectively under the same conditions as described above. Once the chromatograms were obtained and assistance from Dr. Marchand was needed in order to identify significant peaks. Calculations were then done on all three samples to quantitate the amount of capsaicin in each pepper. See calculations page. The concentration of capsaicin in the habanero pepper was calculated to be 207 µg of capsaicin per gram of pepper. Jalapeno was 70.9 µg of capsaicin per gram of pepper and red bell pepper was 8.033 µg of capsaicin per gram of pepper. The results of this analysis seemed to live up to my expectations and what I wanted to demonstrate by analyzing three different peppers spanning a wide range of capsaicin content. The games not only generate a great deal of enthusiasm worldwide but it also creates a platform for people from various cultures and nationalities to interact. The modern Olympic Games were founded in 1896 with high expectations that they may assist in uniting countries of the world in understanding and peace. These expectations have formed the basis of the notion that the Olympic Games are still the best platform or opportunity for the entire world to be united as one. However, the realization of these expectations has been hindered by the international politics that have relatively never been distanced from the surface. There are various Olympic Games that have been held in different cities across the globe that have generated much politics rather than excitement associated with the games themselves. Despite of the seeming inability to keep the international politics from the surface of these games, they still provide the best opportunity for the unity of the entire world. The Case for Olympic Games: As previously mentioned, modern Olympic Games with a history that stretches back to 1896 were initiated with a view and high hopes of uniting the countries of the world (Norton, 2008, p. 730). One thriving, revolutionizing time like this occurred in Heian, Japan from 794 to 1185 C.E., under the rule of the Fujiwara family. Succeeding the Nara period, many aspects of the Heian culture, such as Buddhism and the writing system, were borrowed from China. However, in this time, Japan took those preconceived ideas and really made them their own, adding many new ones along the way. The peace and stability, as well as influential literature greatly contributed to this period s golden legacy. Poetry during this time, most importantly Lady Murasaki s novel, Tale of Genji , reflected this time period and forever changed today s writing, making this era a truly prosperous golden age. This thriving golden age might have flourished, but it started out small, just like any other era. The Heian period began when the capital was moved from Nara to Heian, modern day Kyoto. Many noble families moved along with it (Charles). The Nara period had just ended, and aristocrats violently fought for power. Therefore, for the sake of peace, that s why the capital was moved. The Fujiwara family rose to power, and the golden age began. As Japan s second great period of Japanese culture arose, it brought many accomplishments with it (Fitzgerald). Peace and stability, especially politically, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. Dorigen s Pledge With Aurelius Dorigen s Pledge With Aurelius has Trapped her In a World of Pain I will be looking at the Franklin s tale, lines 1359 66 and 1479 86. In the first passage Dorigen is torn between sleeping with Aurelius an act of infidelity, and kill herself to keep from staining her body. Her conflict is due to her having given her word to both Aurelius and Arviragus (foolishly and willingly). In the second passage, Arviragus tells his wife to keep her promise with Aurelius and then threatens to kill her if she tells anyone about the act she will be committing. It is the third promise that puts her in the tension about not knowing what to do. Not only does Dorigen drag her husband into her unfaithful pledge, but she puts herself in a position of instability and indecisiveness. As Dorigen states, I levere and my body, she reiterates her uncertainly on her pledge with Aurelius and how she has to choose to sacrifice her body or her marriage (1360 61). Dorigen does not have a clue about what step to take. She recapitulates how this tension is cluttered with unending confusion and indecisiveness about what actions to take, the pledge she made and her life, which ties back to her husband, who is part of her life. She is in constant conflict with herself as she repeats herself in her words stating, myselven...my name...my deeth (1362 63). • 23. Factors in Calculating Emissions ANSWER 1: I have noticed that I can make significant reductions to my carbon footprint by making some small changes in the following aspects: a) Heating Cooling: Insulating and caulking the roof/walls, ventilation and shading/awning can reduce the usage heating and cooling systems, which reduce carbon emissions significantly. Having efficient Energy star rated equipment also helps. b) Refrigeration: Maintaining the freezer (above 15 degrees Celsius) and fridge temperatures (between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius). With some proper planning, I can ensure that the fridge is not stuffed with food and food is cooled before being put in the fridge, which reduces the load and time for the motor to run. c) Food and Shopping: Reducing the consumption of meat, dairy products like cheese and take away food seems to bring large reductions in carbon emissions for me ANSWER 2: The Greenhouse emissions are calculated separately for direct and indirect emissions. For direct emissions, carbon emissions are calculated using (Direct) Emission Factors for each fuel type, which is the ratio of carbon dioxide generated for a given quantity of fuel. Indirect emissions from electrical power consumption are estimated through the use of (Electrical) Indirect emission factor, which is varies based on the method of the electricity purchased or consumed. I feel that hearing concepts of group dynamics, and then seeing the concepts in action expands an individual s knowledge on the subject. Seeing the leadership s skill and the processes of a facilitator can influence aspiring facilitators, and give them the experience they need. For my structured group, I decided to go to Greenleaf, and observe an adolescent depression group. This was most definitely a treatment group, because its main focus was looking at meeting the participant s goals, which was to decrease depressive thoughts and behaviors. This therapeutic group worked as an inpatient facility, and I think this is different from most other treatment groups. It s different, because it was dealing with adolescents struggling with depression, and had an indefinite stay at Greenleaf. There are many factors and concepts from our class present in this treatment group. One of the first concepts that I found in this group was its group work values. Many of the participants found a positive value from coming to the group. This makes handling groups easier, because it causes less stress on the facilitator to keep control of derailers and whiners. Another group value that I saw was that cooperation and democracy. I feel like this ideal was embodied in each group member, because from my perception they felt as though they had thought and ... The nightly competition attracts a nameless and silent protagonist, an office worker who spends his days fantasizing about the act of digging. He must face some fierce competition in order to make it to the top and beat the man who silently watches over the event. Digger is an example that in the world of the absurd anything can become a competition. This short film which features no dialogue and a lot of digging is more fun in execution than concept. The late night rituals the men perform in the short makes it feel as if this is just an event that has been and always will be, steeped in a deep tradition with synchronized dances and an unspoken language that you have to dig to prove your worth. They have pondered such questions as whether or not hell is a real place, and if so whether it is divided into different sections or if it is one homogenous lake of fire. • 30. Character Analysis Of Hippolytus The play Hippolytus was written by Euripides, the same writer as the play in Medea. In some ways, this is a story of lies and misunderstandings. I don t really have a character that I liked the most, I thought that Hippolytus, Phaedra, and Theseus all have different good and bad, likeable and unlikable traits. At the first part of the play, we are introduced to Aphrodite. She is the goddess of love and something. In her introduction, she also mentioned the part of the problem which cause all the event to start. Aphrodite took notice on one of the mortals who disrespects her greatly Hippolytus, who said that Aphrodite is was the worst of all gods. Hippolytus, who vowed to himself to never marry a woman, worships the virgin goddess Artemis instead. But what fuels Aphrodite s anger is that Hippolytus has no disrespect for the goddess of love. As a god, I think this is a great insult to their power, especially to an Olympian gods and gods whom are loved by many. Because of that, Aphrodite decides to punish Hippolytus and started her plan. Next, enter Hippolytus, the child of Theseus and the Amazonian, Hippolyta. In the beginning, Hippolytus doesn t seem to be an arrogant man, he seemed to be an honorable and honored the gods properly, mainly Artemis. But, when the goddess Aphrodite was mentioned, his distaste of women started to peak out of the cover. But I think his point of view comes from spotlighting the negative things of women. When the Nurse went against the Queen s wishes, Hippolytus mentioned how stupid women wouldn t be so much trouble while smart women (maybe like Medea) would go behind their husband s back and plot some things while the servant execute the plot. Other characteristics of Hippolytus that made him such a likeable character in the play was that he is an honorable man. After the horrifying fact given by the Nurse, and the accusation from his father of defiling Theseus marriage bed, Hippolytus still kept his oath to stay quiet. Even when he was exiled and his reasoning were all rejected Hippolytus goes willingly. Phaedra is somewhat the main victim of the play, even though it can easily be argued that Hippolytus is the main victim. From the reading, I think Phaedra s main fault was to ... • 31. The Invention Of Television Has Impacted American Society I. Introduction: The first commercial to ever air in America was a 10 second ad for Bulova clocks and watches. This commercial cost nine dollars. Today, a typical commercial costs around two hundred dollars to a thousand dollars (Luckin). Both society and television have drastically changed from when television was first invented to today. Few inventions have had as big of an impact on American society as the television has. The invention of television has impacted American society positively, because it helps spread information faster and influences the way people think about important social issues, it provides cultural experiences and can help broaden viewer s perspectives, and it entertains and brings communities together. II. Background: The invention of television did not happen overnight. Different experiments by various inventors and scholars immersed in the fields of electricity and rado resulted in the development of the basic technologies and ideas that later became the groundwork for the invention of television ( The History Of Television ). Paul Nipkow was one of the first inventors that had a huge impact on the future invention of television. Paul discovered television s scanning principle, which is when the light intensities of small portions of an image are analyzed and transmitted. In 1884, Nipkow invented a rotating disk, with one or more spirals of openings that passed across a picture, called the Nipkow disk ( Paul Gottlieb Nipkow ). This invention ... • 33. Gracile Features Introduction The more gracile features that denote a female typically include the smaller size or often nonexistence of certain features found on the skeleton including but not limited to the nuchal crest, mastoid process, and brow ridges. Also, the average height of a female is shorter than that of the average male. Due to this difference in skeletal structure, most of the bones in the female skeleton should in some form be sexually dimorphic. The trend of smaller features is of course excluding the pelvic girdle, on which most female features are larger and rounder due to the skeletal requirements of childbirth. Given the above statement, it is reasonable to predict that there would be a distinguishable difference between the metacarpal of a male and a female. Studies have proved that metacarpals are sexually dimorphic, and can be used to identify the sex of a skeleton in both Egyptian and Tai populations. Due to these past studies, it is logical to assume that the same sexually dimorphism can be found in the European population. African American women generally have mistrust for therapists or a fear for being stigmatized when being treated for mental illness or AOD disorders. Unfortunatly, almost 25% or 7.5 million African Americans have been diagnosed with a mental illness (Ward, Clark, Heidrich, 2009, p.1589). The scope of the problem will be discussed in this paper and statistical information will also be provided regarding the African American population. Many African Americans, especially in rural communities, do not seek treatment for psychiatric mental health disorders, including AOD disorders, and when they do seek treatment it is often with primary care providers (Boyd, Berger, Baliko, Tavakoli, 2009, p.383). This paper will provide information regarding the signs and symptoms of addiction and the barriers to treatment for the African American population. The importance of building a rapport and earning trust is essential for retaining the African American population in treatment. Scope of Problem African American women that have substance abuse issues are related to severe problems that may stem from childhood. African American women are more likely to use the most severely addictive drugs and incur the highest rate of drug use related emergencies and alcohol use mortalities (Davis Ancis, 2012, p.662). He later then stated that To meet these challenges, some educators are turning to technology to create more dynamic classes that work for students with a wide range of fitness levels. Physical education classes have been lucky to be able to use pedometers, heart rate monitors, stopwatches, etc to be able to physically see and record how healthy their body is. When physical education classes started, teachers were lucky enough to have a pencil, notepad, and a clock on the wall that they used for a stopwatch. Before technology exploded, it was hard to record much of the information we are able to record and chart with technology today. • 42. Supernatural Intervention In H. P. Lovecraft s Dagon Divinely Inspired or Divinely Insane: Supernatural Intervention in Literature Throughout various genres of literature, divine or mystical intervention has played a pivotal role in revealing truths to man. In many cases, these truths prove to be too complex for the human mind to comprehend, resulting in characters to slowly become insane. The characters of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, and Hamlet from their respective Shakespeare plays as well as the unnamed narrator in H.P. Lovecraft s short story Dagon express this belief as they each struggle to maintain sanity after their experiences with powerful, unknown forces. Supernatural beings play significant roles in several of Shakespeare s plays, but take on detrimental roles in many of his tragedies. They can be seen most prominently in what can coincidentally be considered his two most famous tragedies, Macbeth and Hamlet. While paranormal beings appear in forms of the Weird Sisters in Macbeth and the ghost of King Hamlet in Hamlet, John Gibson argues that they contribute to their plots differently. In his essay, Shakespeare s Use of the Supernatural, he argues that Hamlet s supernatural elements confirm a truth from the past, whereas in Macbeth to the future. Dr. John Charles ... Whereas a strongly conservatives averaged neutral on Ingroup / loyalty statements, while agreeing with fairness / Reciprocity, Harm / Care and Purity / Sanctity and strongly agreeing with Authority / Respect(Graham, Haidt and Nosek 2009). In an earlier paper Haidt and Graham(2007) found that for extreme liberals, Harm / Care and Fairness / Reciprocity where almost always relivent, however those who are extremely conservative find that they value all five more equally when making moral choice. This correlates almost perfectly with the earlier paper from Graham, Haidt and Nosek(2009), showing that the findings seem highly reliable. Haidt and Graham(2007) go on to say that the recognition of the final three moral foundations(Ingroup / Loyalty, Authority / Respect and Purity / Sanctity) is key to allowing more fair and even discussions between the two political standpoints. Furthering on this Tyran (2004) found that when a person is presented with a voting option in a referendum where the result would be of financial cost to themselves, but would be morally right, specifically relevant to the Harm / Care and Fairness / Reciprocity foundations, voters tended to vote for the morally right option. This demonstrates that the connection between moral ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
