Advantage Of Competitive Intelligence
The concept Competitive Intelligence has a rich tradition (Juhari and Stephens, 2006), and it has
strong bases in military science and holds a rich history dating back to more than 5,000 years (Tao
and Prescott, 2000)..
In the recent history, especially in the management field, this concept has been examined for many
times under different titles. For example, Aguilar (1967) and Fahey and King (1977) invented the
phrase environmental scanning, which concentrated on how the executives scan their organizations
environment.
Likewise, over time other labels have been utilized in prior studies to identify competitive
intelligence. Like:
Business intelligence (Cleland and King, 1975; Pearce, 1976).
Competition analysis (Ghoshal and Westney,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In center, Competitive Intelligence helps strategists to understand the forces that act upon the
business environment and, more significantly, to develop appropriate designs to compete
successfully (McGonagle and Vella, 2002).
Guimaraes (2000) provides us with a summary of the benefits of Competitive Intelligence practice
in strategic planning: bringing to light business opportunities and problems that will enable
proactive strategies; providing the basis for continuous improvement; omit light on competitor
strategies; improving speed to market and thereby supporting rapid globalization; improving the
possibility of company survival; increasing business volume; providing better customer assessment;
and improving understanding of external influences .
For the present research, Competitive Intelligence is defined as a Systematic and ethical process for
gathering, analyzing and managing external information that can affect the company plans,
decisions and operations (Saayman, et

I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings Literary Analysis
Author Information: Maya Angelou, both the writer and protagonist of I Know Why the Caged
Bird Sings, spent the majority of her childhood in Stamps, Arkansas in the wake of her parent s
divorce at the age of three. She, along with her older brother, lived with their grandmother
(Annie Henderson), whom they call Momma, at the only black store in the segregated town of
Stamps. Annie later became a big influence in her life and helped her develop self confidence
and pride. Growing up, Maya had to deal with her insecurities over her looks and the rejection
and abandonment of her biological parents. Southern racism is also a concern and appears
throughout her life in the form of humiliation and lynch mobs. From Momma s store, Maya
watches the pitiful cotton pickers as they travel to and from work every day. At the age of eight,
Maya s father (Annie s son) unexpectedly shows up to take her and her brother Bailey to live with
Vivian, their mother, in St. Louis, Missouri. Vivian makes a living off of gambling parlours. One
morning Vivian s... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At the age of ten she takes a job for a white woman who calls her Mary because she cannot be
bothered to learn or say her full real name. In anger, Maya breaks the woman s fine china. At her
grade eight graduation, a white speaker from the prestigious white school informs the black
students that they are expected to become only athletes or servants. When Maya gets a tooth
ache, Momma drags her across town to the only dentist in Stamps (who happens to be white),
and he proceeds to insult her, saying he would rather place his hands in a dogs mouth than in
hers. An example of indirect racism would be when Bailey encounters the body of a dead, rotting
black man and witnesses a white man s satisfaction at seeing the body. Momma soon becomes
concerned and fears for her children s safety. She saves up money to take them to Vivian, who now

Strategic Choice and Evaluation of Target Corporation
Strategic Choice and Evaluation
Target Corporation is one of the most major merchants store in the world. Target is recorded to be
the sixth largest retailer within the United States. Founded by, George Dayton in the early 1900 s

of products, which includes everything from clothing to shoes, health and beauty, and even

When a business can provide a lower cost, then the business can have the ability to lower their
price. Providing a better pricing system, along with sharp value products can only increase the
chance of growth and customers overtime.
Grand Strategy
A grand strategy is a master long term plan that provides a basic direction for major actions
directed toward achieving long term business objectives (Pearson Robinson, 2011, p. 187).
Nonetheless, the goals that are defined above recommended that the organization will need to
apply two strategies in order to be effective. Target will need to pledge on applying human resource
improvement as well as providing cost leadership to effectively expand the company competitive
advantage all around.
Human Resource Development
Human Resource Development (HRD) is essential, and applies an important factor to maximizing
employee proficiency to accomplish the main goal of a company. HRD has provided employees
with current proficiency. HRD supplies a way to kept track of increasing cultured information as
well as production technologies. HRD will provide ways to enhance overall employee ability.
Therefore, once competitive advantage is attained, Target marketplace can swiftly take a down fall
without the company identifying methods to withstand their current advantage. Nevertheless, it is
important that Target has the most

The Problem Of Prison Population
After decades trying to prevent it, prison population continued to increase. Mandatory minimum
sentences and the privatization created more prisoners, rather than cutting down on the amount
incarcerations. Since the 1980 s, the prison population has quadrupled and today one in every one
hundred adults are in prison(Mandatory Minimums (HBO)). Infact, America leads the world in
prisoners with 20% of the earth s prison population (The Prison Crisis). In a study done by The
American Prospect, charts and graphs provide information about the overpopulation crisis. The
data from the charts show that while the crime rate has decreased, the rate of incarceration has
been on a steady incline since 1990 (Waldman). America also leads the world in the number of
prisoners 760 prisoners per 100,000 population (Waldman). Not only does America have more
prisoners than developed countries, like Russia, the united states beats undeveloped countries as
well. Rwanda, which has the highest amount of prisoners in Africa, has 595 prisoners per 100,000
population (Waldman). The overpopulation of prisons in America creates poor conditions for the
inmates and with each prisoner, more money has to go into the prison system, hurting the economy.
When a person convicted of a crime cannot pay the set bail, they are forced to stay in prison while
their trial goes on. This means that a person could be completely innocent but would still have to
face the same punishments that an actual criminal would

Avian Bornavirus Research Paper
Avian Bornavirus The Bornavirus was first recognized in 1885 in cavalry horses in the town of
Born in Saxony, Germany. Since then the disease has made itself known in many species
including birds, horses, cattle, sheep, dogs, and foxes. Which is how we have all the different
genotypes of this disease. In 1995 it was found in cats who have staggering diseases and in 2000
a researcher found the Borna virus in an ostrich farm and in other wild birds. Avian Bornavirus
(ABV) it is also a RNA virus meaning it not only affects the digestive system but it also damages
the spinal cord and the brain. Researchers believe that ABV is one of the main causatives of PDD
in birds and can lead to Macaw Wasting Disease. The Bornavirus triggers an autoimmune

Nickel And Dimed By Barbara Ehrenreich
There are many families out there who are currently struggling to make ends meet. Regardless of
their hard work and commitment, the economy will not take pity. I wish I could say that it was
not always like this. Unfortunately, no real change has taken place within the past few years. It
may not be as difficult as the time of the Great Depression, but who s to say that we have
recovered from it? My claim is supported by Barbara Ehrenreich, an American author, who
published a novel called Nickel and Dimed which digs deep into the economic situation in the early
90 s. Ehrenreich decided to run an experiment becoming a blue collar worker to see if she can
manage to make a living on low wages. She later blogs of Nickel and Dimed in 2011 to see... Show

The cost for places to live like hotels, motels, or trailer parks may be within reason, but not
enough for a blue collar worker s salary. The difficulty in securing a place to live is not
uncommon, and many have made ways to work around it like sharing apartments. Ehrenreich
details these types of situations in her novel like Tina, another server, and her husband [who]
are paying $60 a night for a room in the Days Inn...[or] Joan... [who] lives in a van parked behind
a shopping center at night and showers in Tina s motel room (pg. 25). Examples taken from
Ehrenreich s novel shows us the struggles that many have had to go through to secure a place to
live. It isn t to say that these people don t work hard, but, unfortunately, this is the best they get
for the work they put in and the pay they receive. Now it becomes difficult, if finding a place to
live during a prosperous age wasn t hard enough, try finding one during the time of recession.
Job losses are very common during this age, and with that comes the difficulty to afford proper
housing. Most end up on the street, and others barely struggle to stay sheltered whether it be in
their car, assuming they still have one or staying in public shelters. Ehrenreich mentions in her
2011 blog that, Housing expert Peter Dreier says that people who ve lost their jobs, or, at least,
their second jobs, cope by doubling or tripling up in overcrowded apartments, or by paying 50 or 60
or even 70 percent of

Thornton Research Paper
An increase in the production of domestic magazines, primarily aimed at women, coincided with
the stricter expectations of female behaviour. The Lady s Magazine, in which the exposГ© of
Thornton appeared, was the first to survive any length of time. It was issued monthly and
contained news but largely consisted of poetry, sheet music and stories. Its cost made it largely an
upper class magazine, as it was the equivalent of a full day s pay of a skilled artisan. Lower class
literature too experienced a large growth in production. Street literature, including broadsides and
ballads, had long been popular since the sixteenth century and by the early nineteenth were sold in
the thousands on every city street corner. Both had firm backgrounds... Show more content on

By the early nineteenth century, newspapers were an integral part of daily life for both men and
women. Both sexes would have read about Thornton s story in the newspaper. While it is clear
that women read newspapers, the size of the female readership remains extremely unclear . It
was this female readership that the articulators of separate spheres ideology were concerned
with reaching. The basic premise of the separate spheres was that the public sphere of political
life and employment was naturally the space of men and the domestic sphere of the home was
the realm of women. The conscious articulation of this idea in the media of the nineteenth century
was the product of fears of societal instability, of which the breakdown of familial and sexual
order became a striking metaphor . Domestic magazines and newspapers worked to create and
proliferate a baseline of acceptable behaviour for women and offered definitions of what would be
tolerated. The attempts in the print media to reflect the model behaviour for the sexes is apparent
the representations and phrasing of Thornton s appearances, as seen in Chapter

Why Did Britain Enter Ww2 Research Paper

The Prime Minister announced today in a message broadcast to the Empire, that as from 11 o

1939.) Britain must know the pain of war, but why it still joined the WW2 in 1939. I am going to
talk about the three reasons why Britain entered the ww2.
The First reason Britain entered ww2 is Germany occupation of Czechoslovakia. After the ww1,

Anglo Polish Agreement with Poland. It was agreed that the two countries were prepared to enter
into an agreement of a permanent and reciprocal character to replace the present temporary and
unilateral assurance given by His Majesty s Government to the Polish Government. (Anglo Polish

Britain and Poland. Also Britain and France promise they will help Romania and Greece. Germany
think they are going to surrounded by these countries, so it declare abolition the treaty about not

Soviet Union secretly. Germany said Poland is a unstable country, so it have to obey Germany, or it

Farmer V Pilot Essay
Does Farmer have any claim(s) for damages against Pilot based on intentional tort? Discuss.
Rule of Law :
The essential requirements of intentional torts are the elements of intent, injury, damages and
causation.
The concept of intention does not require that Defendant (D) know that his/her act will cause harm
to the Plaintiff (P), but must know with substantial certainty that their act will result in certain
outcomes (landing of the plane on the P s land).
To successfully make a claim against D, P must prove that D acted with purpose when he landed
the plane on P s property, that the act was intentional and it lead to the injury suffered by P (loss
of land and crops) and the resulting damages to P s land and crops.
It is clear ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
IV.P was in possession or was entitled to immediate possession of the land when the trespasstook

V.Trespass was caused by the D s act.
Based on the facts, it is clear that the Pilot has a prima facie case for trespass to land . The facts
are clear that the i) Pilot intended to land on the Farmer s land; ii) Pilot did land on the Farmer s
land; iii) the Farmer had not expressly authorized the entry. [3]
However, as a defense privilege we have to review the law in terms of implied consent (implied
in fact and implied in law) and the application of necessity case law. The urgent nature of the
circumstances and the availability of limited options (sub division of homes, trees of vacant
land) provide a basis for implied consent. Implied in fact consent would be an objective
manifestation as a reasonable person would consent under the circumstances especially when
taking into account the loss of life against the loss of property. Per case law, the courts have
ruled that loss of life over shadows loss of property. Similarly, implied in law consent would need
to be reviewed under the rule of law and the benefit of the public, considering the options between
landing on a housing tract versus landing on a vacant farm where the potential of damages would
be significantly lower.
The same elements of urgency and limited available options also provide the defense privilege
under the rule of law of necessity . If the defense falls under the preview of public

Budget Transition
A Brief Historical Review of Budget Transitions
Given the size and intricacy of the federal government, transition planning is a formidable task. An
incoming president is responsible for making more than 4,000 appointments and managing an
organization with a budget of nearly $4 trillion and more than 2 million civilian employees
performing missions as diverse as national defense, education, preventing the spread of disease and
managing an energy infrastructure. Any candidate for the presidency must be ready to handle the
demands of leading a massive organization on day one.
The presidential budgetary transition can be broken down into 3 distinct phases; pre election
planning, post election transition and post inaugural handover. Each of these stages takes a
differing and increasingly in depth approach to the budget.
Pre planning, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The appointment of Cabinet positions solidifies the President Elect s budget proposals by

Lastly, the post inaugural or handover period, which works in a more managerial role within the
budget process, including managing the budget s first 100 days in office, developing policy
priorities and working on urgent issues, and conducting agency assessments to review the budget
that the incoming President has preordained with his Cabinet.
The complexity of the presidential transition process is simplified when it is broken down into
manageable work streams such as policy implementation, agency review, presidential appointments,
and operations.

Mexican And Mexican Americans During The War Of Texas And...
The Unit explains the hardships many Mexican and Mexican Americans have carried and continue
to carry till this day due to their ethnicity and roots. The inequality and struggles rooted from the
invasion of Texas and the wrongful won over Mexican territory by the Euro centric American who
then expanded their border down south unjustly colonizing the Northwest of Mexico. Along with
land many Mexicans who resided in this land were now living in among a strange new
government and environment that was once their land. This began the expectation of having
Mexican Americans being able to assimilate into the Euro Centric culture. These assimilations
they were presume to make caused for many to lose touch of their own culture. Mexican
Americans continued to be oppressed even when serving their own country. Many young Mexican
Americans turned to joining the military due to financial hardships, like many due this day.
Although these young men were risking their life they were still wrongfully treated and racially
discriminated while in service. Having men risking their life for a country and still be
discriminated because of their ethnicity shows how progressed the hatred for Mexicans was

An Essay About A Mate
Mate. My mother used to tell me the definition of mate was your destined love true love to say
the least. A person that will stick with you through the thick and thin, no matter the destination.
A mate is supposed to protect you from the harmful ways of the world. A mate was supposed to
fight with you side by side. A mate is supposed to love you no matter the cost. I never really
thought about mates or well superficially my mate. I thought I was always going to be alone,
fighting my own battles and defeating my own wars with no else s help but only my own. But I
guess life has its mysterious ways of confusing the living life out of me and possibly my mate to.
The hand on my shoulder sent bolts of electricity to run out through my body starting from the
tip of my toes to all the way to the tip of my fingers. My body fell on infinite bliss. Even though
this touch erupted fireworks in my stomach this touch also calmed me, comforted me in many
ways than one Physically, Mentally and Emotionally. I felt safe and free but that didn t last long.
The hand on my shoulder slipped off slowly and gently but that action only ripped away all the
bliss and comfort from it, bringing back the cold to my body. I turned around slowly facing the
owner of the hand that was touching me only moments go but it felt like his last touch was months
ago, what was this person touch doing to me? The owner of the hand had its mouth slightly open

Writing is told from within ones self through expressions and thoughts. Creating stories are what
people do as they walk through life, opening and closing doors, and creating history. Becoming

Nobel Prize winner of Literature in 2009, Herta Muller has done this. Her intense, descriptive

country which forced labor and banned her from publication is why she won. Herta MГјller has

The Cartographer Wasps And The Anarchist Bees Summary
The Cartographer Wasps and the Anarchist Bees by E. Lily Yu tells the fictional story of the
relationship between an overpowering wasp community and a docile bee community. The
wasps take over the bees, basically rule over them, and instill their very different way of life on
them. A group of anarchist bees that oppose the wasp government secretly escape and begin a
new community. The story abruptly ends though when both the cartographer wasps and
anarchist bees die from humans and the cold. Throughout The Cartographer Wasps and the
Anarchist Bees, Yu creates tension to build toward the climax. Simply put, tension is trouble on
the page. Writers use it to create conflict and make readers uneasy, off balance, worry or hope. Yu
employs tension multiple times in this piece. One being on page 23, when the foundress wasp
has the first two ambassador bees killed upon arrival and then finally meets with the third and has
a very aggressive conversation. In this scene the foundress wasp lays out what she demands from
the bees, like a portion of their food and some of their larvae. The ambassador bee replies I don t...

goes on to explain how anarchism is a heritable trait, thus as the anarchist bees reproduced, more

hopeful that the bees will be able to escape their wasp rulers. When one anarsist bee is explaining
to her sister about anarchy she says this: In order to imagine a new existence, we must free

Can Officers Effectively Prosecute Domestic Violence...
When prosecuting criminal domestic violence cases too many officers constructed their entire case
only on statements made by the victim. However, victims of domestic violence are more likely
than victims of other violent crime to recant or refuse to cooperate in prosecutorial efforts
(Breitenbach, 2008, p. 1256). Officers must consider that victims of domestic violencemay refuse to
testify because of fear of retaliation, intimidation, financial dependence, emotional attachment, and
/or because they reunited with the batterer. If the victim refused to testify during court, their
statement against the abuser becomes hearsay evidence. Several recent cases have had a huge

Thus, any out of court statements made by witnesses and/or victims to law enforcement must be
excluded unless the defendant had prior opportunity to cross examine the unavailable witnesses
(Byrom, 2005). The only non testimonial statements that would be utilized in court, without direct
testimony from the witness and/or complainant, were the taped 911 phone calls reporting the
incident. If the victim testified, their previous statements would be allowed as evidence without
limitation because the witness was subjected to cross examination. However, if the victim refused
to testify, any testimonials made to law enforcement were not allowed as evidence in the court
proceedings.
In light of these legal changes, officers needed to construct their domestic violence cases under the
assumption that the victim would not be participating in the prosecution. The case commenced at
the time the call was received by dispatch up until the case was presented to a judge or jury.
Therefore, officers needed to complete the proper procedures to secure recordings of the calls made
to the 911 dispatch center to report the domestic situation. In addition to having the subject, victim
and/or witnesses complete written and/or video statements, the officer must diligently identify,
collect, and photograph evidence at the crime scene (Ellison, 2002). This required officers to visit
the victim several days later to photograph bruising, because some bruising

Psychological Abuse In Slavery By Harriet Jacobs
Psychological abuse is characterized by non physical acts to affect inner thoughts. As a slave,
Harriet Jacobs experienced a great amount of pain and suffering while her and her family members
were slaves of Dr. Flint. She narrated her experiences after realizing she was a slave at six years
old. From an analysis of Harriet Jacobs experience in slavery, she suffered more from psychological
abuse because she was treated like property, manipulated by Dr. Flint, and emotionally depressed.
One of the reasons why Harriet Jacobs suffers more from psychological abuse was because she
was treated as property. Upon the death of her generous mistress, Harriet Jacobs was later
relocated into her mistress niece s house. The mistress niece was only five years old which made
Jacobs the property of her father, Dr. Flint who made Harriet Jacobs life a living hell while being
a slave in his house. From the time that Jacobs and her brother William first walked into their
new master s home, they knew their lives were about to get worse: When we entered our new
home we encountered cold looks, cold words, and cold treatment, (Ch.2). From the start, Dr.
Flint and his wife treated Jacobs as property. As Jacobs said in chapter four, he occasionally tried to
sell her for high prices but said she wasn t his property to sell: She don t belong to me. She is my
daughter s property, and I have no right to sell her. Once Jacobs was 15 years old and Dr. Flint was

Anime Of Anime And Anime
Period 1/4 History of Anime
Manga and anime are a huge part in American and the Japanese culture. Anime and Manga were
once used for war, propaganda, and recruitment, but is now used for entertainment and leisure.
Anime was not just created by one man but by many working together. Anime has had a long line
of history causing it to become more and more loved throughout the years. It not only caused
Japan a great deal of money and working jobs but it also influenced more people to see the brighter
things in life. Manga was not only just important in anime s history but it was the cause of it. The
time line of huge success in anime started in 1914 with the first manga being created.
World War II was a big part in anime history with the nation being mobilized in which the anime and
manga industry evolved quite a lot. The war caused that government to force people to conform to
the government or pay a high price. Those that didn t cooperate were banned from writing, given
preventive detention, and sometimes even social ostracism. People who spent most of their lives
criticizing and judging the government did an about face and offered support to militarists. Those
who followed the government s command Were rewarded with support from their community and

Figurative Language In Alice In Wonderland
An author frequently exemplifies different messages and conflict within a story or novel. More
often or not, an author portrays certain types of literary devices to convey a message between
the setting and characters. In Lewis Carroll s novel, Alice in Wonderland, Alice s curiosity and
innocence as a child in the Victorian Era leads to her exploring another world called Wonderland.
She is challenged to find the true meaning of exploring outside of an ordinary world which leads
her to question her own identity. The depths of wonderland and many influences Alice stumbles
across changes the dynamics of her inner self from a child to an adult. The white rabbit resembles
her escape outside of reality into a new world that ultimately creates a... Show more content on

Carroll uses the food and drinks as a way of representing Alice s curious appetite for growing up
in her societal role. As she wanders around Wonderland, her curiosity often leads to her eating or
drinking an object in order to satisfy her curiosity. When she drinks the Drink Me substance she
says, Curiouser and curiouser! Cried Alice she was so much surprised, that for the moment she
quite forgot how to speak good English (Carroll 6). Many times throughout the novel, Alice
adventures revolve around food and drinks such as sweet baked snacks, potions and tea to appease
her curiosity. Alice begins to lose control of her eating and drinking habits of Wonderland which
demonstrates her maturity as she looks towards adulthood in the reality world. The more food and
drinks Alice applies to herself, Carroll establishes the metaphor of growing up results in
unpredictable events and changes that are irreversible. Alice stumbles across the Cheshire Cat who
portrays the opposite of growing up as he believes taking short cuts are better than asking for
advice. The Chesire cat exclaims to Alice, Then it doesn t matter which way you go (Carroll 49).
The metaphor from the Cheshire Cat resulted from Alice asking about visiting the Mad Hatter. In

Helicobacter Pylori Research Paper
Helicobacter Pylori at Tight Junctions
Prior to the isolation of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori} by Robin Warren and Barry Marshall in
1982, it was theorized that peptic ulceration, an ailment first described in 1857 by William Brinton,
stemmed from poor diet, tobacco use, and stress due to the failure to definitively identify a
causative agent as well as the belief that the inhospitable environment within the human stomach
resulted in its sterility (Tanenbaum 2005). Because physicians were ignorant to the existence of
H. pylori, individuals suffering from peptic ulcerations underwent ineffective treatments for
over a century. The successful isolation of H. pylori and identification of its role in gastric
diseases earned Warren and Marshall a joint Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005
(The Nobel Prize 2005). Despite the passage of thirty two years, modern medicine has been
unable to definitively eradicate H. pylori, but research continues in hopes of developing a more
permanent cure as well as effective methods of preventing initial peptic ulceration, as occurrence is
linked to an increased risk of developing gastric carcinomas.

The science of politics, however, like most other sciences, has received great improvement. The
efficacy of various principles is now well understood, which were either not known at all, or
imperfectly known to the ancients, wrote Alexander Hamilton in Federalist Paper number 9. In The
Federalist Papers, which Thomas Jefferson described as the best commentary on the principles of
government, which was ever written, writers Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay
sought to articulate and defend the integrity of the new Constitution, and to demonstrate the ways
in which it fulfilled the requirements necessary to establish a Republican form of government.

First to be explored is Aristotle s Politics. It this work, Aristotle portrays man as an inherently
political animal, with logos and the ability to distinguish injustice from justice. He purports that
the purpose of humanity within nature is to live together and seek justice. Since human beings
live as political animals, the polis arises naturally. The purpose of the polis is not merely to help
humans live, but to help them live well, as morally sound, well educated citizens (Nederman
287). Speaking of the democratic state specifically, he says, the basis of a democratic state is
liberty...one principle of liberty is for all to rule and be ruled in turn....another is that a man
should live as he likes (Book 6.2). In other words, freedom based upon equality (Book 6.2). This,
alongside his the purpose of the polis itself (to educate and assist citizens in living well and seeking
justice) forms the foundation of the promise of democracy within the selections from Aristotle s
Politics. However, what threatens the institutions of democracy according to Aristotle? First, he
finds weakness in democracy s definition of justice: that to which the majority agree (Book 6.2). In
contrasting it with the oligarch s definite ( that to which the wealthier class ), he states there is
some inequality and injustice within each. Each places the democracy in danger of tyranny, whether

The Gallup Poll
The Gallup Poll
When Gallup conducts a national opinion poll, the starting place is where all or most Americans
are equally likely to be found. That place is in their home, which is the starting place for nearly all
national polling. The actual target audiences, referred to as national adults , are aged 18 and over,
living in telephone households within the United States. What I don t understand is that Gallup
excludes college students living on campus, armed forces living on military bases, prisoners,
hospitalized people, and anyone else who is living institutionalized. I think these exclusions are
unfair. The article explains that the reasoning for not including the people who live in the places
mentioned above is because of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Another thing I found interesting in this article is that Gallup as well as other major
organizations use sample sizes of 1,000 1,500 because these sample sizes are enough to give a good
balance of accuracy opposed to much larger samples which would be very expensive. I hadn t
considered expense when it comes to collecting a sample but apparently it can be very costly. For
instance, if a sample size of 4,000 were selected each time there was a poll, the increase in
accuracy would be very small, and would not justify the increase in cost. Now, I believe this to
be true because I do think that the people behind things like the Gallop Poll are very smart
statisticians and would not lie when it comes to what effects the sample size has on the accuracy
of results. It makes absolute sense to me that specific ways of measuring the accuracy of samples
have been done for many years and the processes and results have been analyzed thoroughly with
each design.
The poll of such a small number of people do not invalidate the results since for instance, as stated
in the article, if the sample size was raised to 2,000 instead of 1,000, for a Gallup Poll there would
be a gain of only 1% in terms of accuracy, and a 100% increase in terms of cost. I can understand
that looking at results with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points is reasonable
compared to spending a lot more money and only change the margin of error by

Gas Line Repair Fort Worth
For household s that depend on gas for heating, cooking and hot water, safe gas lines are
essential. If you are not a professional trained in gas line repair in Fort Worth, trying to work with
a gas line can be a dangerous and costly mistake.
Gas is a clean and efficient fuel that is relatively safe, but gas line leaks are extremely dangerous,
and can be deadly. The risks of a gas leakare suffocation, explosion and fire. When repair or
installation is provided they require specialized equipment to test for leaks, equipment a Benjamin
Franklin licensed plumber uses routinely.
For the homeowner, the best means to determine if you have a gas line leak is by the odor. An
additive is added to naturally odorless natural gas that is similar to rotten eggs. The scent is added
to help people identify a gas leak. If you detect the odor of gas, get everyone out of the house, and
when you are safely away from your home, and the odor of gas, call 911 and your gas provider.

Effects Of Obesity On Obesity And Obesity
As aforementioned, many people believe that obesity is caused by just overconsumption of
fatty foods, but there is more to it. Definitely overconsumption of fats is a major factor and
recipe to obesity, but also calorie intake and amount of exercise has a lot to do with becoming
overweight. If a person s diet includes a greater amount of calorie than the amount of daily
exercise, then that excess calorie will be stored as fat. It is not necessary to take in more calories
than what the body usually uses up after daily exercise because this will disrupt the balance and
cause an unhealthy imbalance with food proportions thus, leading to weight gain. It is best when

Also, not having good programs that bring local fruits and vegetables to schools, businesses, and
communities may determine the quantity of obese people living in that community or
environment (CDC, 2012). Not having communities set up to facilitate and encourage exercise
and healthy living may lead to this prevailing disease called obesity. In some disorders, genetics
can be a direct cause of obesity. On the other hand, genetics is one factor that may increases the
likelihood of the disease. Studies have proven that genes have a great deal to do with obese
persons. Treuth (2003) states that Obesity tends to regularly follow children who have obese
parents, however parents with regular body weight can still have obese children (p. 1212 1218).
Genetics can cause obesity, but it is not a major recorded factor of obesity. It is easy for one to
say that, obesity runs in my family, but according to (CDC, 2012) what is happening is although
obesity is greatly determined by genetics, and a population s genetic structure does not change
overnight. Hence, an increase in . . .[obesity] will have to show drastic changes of non genetic
determinants. Results If a person is affected by obesity, it is not the end of the world. It can be

The Epidemic Is Sweeping The Nation
An epidemic is sweeping the nation. Rapidly more cases of STD s are being noted to appropriate
health officials and are steadily increasing instead of declining. The Centers for Disease Control,
commonly known as the CDC, have vigorously tracked HIV numbers and an estimated 1,218,400
persons aged 13 years and older are living with the HIVinfection ( HIV in The United States: At A
Glance ). This doesn t include the amount of people clueless to being infected at all: a whopping
156,300. Discouragingly and surprisingly enough, a factor contributing to this number is that
people aren t being informed when they engage in relations with another person who has the virus.
The risk of transmission from one to the other is excruciatingly high if one party isn t given the
opportunity to take the appropriate precautions to protect themselves. Furthermore, when a person
is warned that their partner has a transmittable disease, they aren t really equipped to make an
informative decision because of lack of information. Every citizen has an undeniable duty to take
action to reduce the spread of STD s in Arizona so that eventually these harmful diseases can be
altogether eradicated for future generations to come.

The Digestive System Of Digestion Essay
Digestion is the breaking apart of foods into smaller and smaller units and absorbtion is the
movements of those small units from the gut into the bloodstream or lymphatic system for
circulation. (1) The digestive system is what keeps you going from day to day because without the
digestive system you wouldn t be able to consume anything. You also wouldn t be able to absorb
the necessary nutrients you need for your body to keep functioning correctly. The organs that play a
role in the digestive systemis the mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine,
appendix, rectum, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and the anal canal. The mouth is where it all starts.
Before you even take a bite of your food, the smell of the food is what triggers your salivary
glands which include the parotid, sublingual, and submandibular glands in your mouth making it
start to water. Your saliva increases when you taste the food. When you chew the food into smaller
pieces the enzyme amylase breaks food into small sugar molecules. To start fat digestionanother
enzyme is released at the base of the tongue called lingual lipase. A bolus is easy to swallow and is
formed when saliva and other fluids in the mouth mixed with mucous. Bolus slides past the
epiglottis and then goes through the esophagus and to the stomach where it is then digested. The
esophagus is a muscular tube connecting the pharynx to the stomach that is part of the upper
gastrointestinal tract. (4) This organ carries the

The reform of the British constitution remains unfinished...
In this essay, I would like to analyse why the reform of the British constitution is seen as unfinished
business. Constitutional reform is when the system of government and how government institutions
interact is changed. This has also meant the codification of some components of the constitution in
the UK. Between 1997 and 2007, there were a considerable number of constitutional reforms
introduced by the Blair governments. These reforms included devolution in Scotland, Wales and
Northern Ireland, decentralisation, reform of the House of Lordsand Commons, creations of new
legislation granting greater freedom and rights within the UK, and so on. However, some of them
are yet to be accomplished or in progress related to the electoral and... Show more content on

Until now, the content of the constitutional reform has not covered any electoral reform yet as the
constitution was prone to manipulation by single party governments.
The reform of the Human Rights Act can illustrate that the constitutional reform did not go far
enough. In 1998, the Blair government announced that the citizens rights would be safeguarded and
strengthened through incorporating the European Convention on Human Rights into UK law.
However, this created a problem as the UK now has two sets of rights those built up under
Common Law and those in the Human Rights Act. These two sets of rights may conflict and, in
addition, cases can be taken using these rights to both the UK Supreme Court and the European
Court of Human Rights (which is the supreme court for the European Convention on Human
Rights). The UK judiciary is divided on how to resolve this issue.
The centrepiece of Labour s programme of constitutional reform was undoubtedly devolution.
This was achieved with remarkably few problems. There now seems no likelihood that the new
arrangements could be reversed, even by a Conservative administration. The election on 6 May
1999 of a Parliament in Scotland, with extensive powers of primary legislation as well as tax
raising, and an Assembly in Wales, with powers of secondary legislation only, will have a profound
impact on governance within the UK. In

characteristic in the play. Puck is a mischievous sprite, involved with most magical events in the
play. Often playing tricks for his own enjoyment or by his master, Oberon s, commands, Puck is
depicted as a young, deceptive character. When first discovered as Robin... Show more content on

Being the only character, other than Bottom, to enter both the human and fairy world, the play
makes Puck to be the protagonist. While there his trickery and trouble are antagonistic in nature,
his vital part is that of a positive character, ultimately resolving all problems. Puck treats the
entire idea of love as madness, the idea Shakespeare was conveying with his trickery. Helena is
portrayed as a desperate character, her passion being for the love of Demetrius. Helena spends
most of the story pursuing Demetrius in hope of receiving any form of affection in return, only
receiving affection due to magic. While chasing Demetrius, Helena says What worser place can
I beg your love, And yet a place of high respect with me, Than to be usГЁd as you use your dog?
(II.i.208 210) Helena, knowing demeaning herself to the position of a dog, believes that she is not
worthy enough for such authority, therefore hoping she will be given the honour. Helena compares
herself to a dog in the sense that the more Demetrius rejects her, the harder she will try to receive
any emotion from her master. Although heartbroken by Demetrius hatred for her, Helena showers
Demetrius with comments, only to be continuously beaten down. This is explicitly shown when
Helena comments on Demetrius demeanor and is, again rejected, saying, You draw me, you hard
hearted adamant; But yet you draw not iron, for my heart Is true as steel: leave you your power

Hester Prynne Heroism
One of the most enduring conflicts concerning Nathaniel Hawthorne s novel The
Scarlet Letter is over whose story is primarily being told: Hester Prynne s or Arthur Dimmesdale s.
Hester s feminine heroism tends to domineer the novel in contrast to the distraught clergyman, so
often at a loss in the complexities of human existence. Hawthorne illustrates Dimmesdale s
relentless strive towards immortality brought on by the strict repression of Puritan society, all the
while maintaining the transcendental impression that protests his irrational means of coping with
guilt. Hawthorne establishes Hester Prynne as the immediate heroine of the novel, but as one
observes the story of Arthur Dimmesdale unfold, it becomes clearer that his struggle is that ... Show

Dimmesdale only does this halfway when he announces People of New England!...ye, that have
loved me! ye, that have deemed me holy! behold me here, the one sinner of the world! At last! at
last! I stand upon the spot where, seven years since, I should have stood; here, with this woman,
whose arm, more than the little strength wherewith I have crept hitherward, sustains me, at this
dreadful moment, from grovelling down upon my face! (220). Dimmesdale s confession, though
theatrical and heartbreaking at first glance is, in the end quite selfish and reveals that his nemesis
an event that cannot be avoided, usually as a result of the hero s hamartia could have been
prevented entirely. Unlike the tragic heroes of Macbeth or Oedipus, whose lives were doomed from
the start and therefore unalterable, Dimmesdale has the power to change his fate. The minister
recognizes this frequently throughout the novel that he should have ...[stood] upon the spot where,
seven years since... here, with this woman... (220) but he chooses not to. For Dimmesdale, it was
not too late he had every opportunity to admit his guilt, to relinquish himself from the chains of his
guilt and prevent it from ultimately destroying him, but he chooses to suffer quietly.

The Four Layers Of The Respiratory System
The respiratory system is made up of two different parts, the upper respiratory tract which includes
the nose, mouth and the beginning on the trachea. This is the part that is in charge of taking in the
air and letting it back out again, and then the lower respiratory tract which is made up of the trachea
and the lungs.
There are four different layers that make up the trachea, these include the mucosa which is the in
most layer. This consists of ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelium tissue which contains
goblet cells that secrete a tacky mucus that lines the walls of the inner trachea so that it catches any
debris breathed in via the air before it hits the lungs.
Ciliated pseudostratified columnar epithelial cells are a rectangular

21st Century Journalism Student Journalists
To succeed in 21st Century Journalism student journalists will need to have a thorough
understanding of the potential contribution journalism has to their audience. Journalists should
have accredited qualifications and skills such as NCTJ shorthand and law; to report stories
accurately and ethically according to the values of a democratic society. As well as being self
motivated with a good reputation; gaining work experience and blogging regularly.
In the past, the publication of diverse facts and stories was helpful to develop the idea of a
democratic society in news culture. However, last century s end editors defined the news within a
business context, in order to maintain or increase their profits (Nuttal et al, 2011, p15). Jay ... Show

The first piece of print Journalism in the United Kingdom was called coranto , which started in
1620 and was published in Amsterdam. After that point several other newspapers were developed
such as The Times (1785), Observer (1791), Sunday Times (1822) and the News of the World
(1843) (Holmes et al, 2013, p3).
In the late 20th century, publications would take on trainees every year on top of the staff they had.
Whereas, in the 21st century most companies will only recruit where there are vacancies (Holmes
et al, 2013, p285). This is because now employers expect student journalists to have real world
work experience. And so, contacts are considerably valuable to get into the industry as it allows
the student to have previous experience on a more casual basis, but will look impressive to future
employers. Therefore, those without experience are less likely to get a job as others will be
favoured. For example, todays newspaper editors were in newsrooms doing journalism, rather than
studying it as a degree (Synge, 2010, p17). Previously job apprenticeships were common, but now
there is a trend towards formal pre entry qualifications and post graduate programmes such as the
NCTJ (Holmes et al, 2013, p280). And so, having a degree does not guarantee a lasting successful
journalism career (Synge, 2010, p17).
Additionally, the essential qualities a journalist should have are curiosity, self motivation,

Effects Of The First Great Awakening Dbq
There were many events that occured prior to the American Revolution and aided in bringing it to
fruition. The First Great Awakening in the 1730s and 1740s presented a new logic that had people
begin to reflect on the spirituality in daily life, causing a majority of colonists to question the rule
of Great Britain over them. The religious impact in the colonists from the Great Awakening caused
the ministers to lose authority among those who now studied the Bible in their own homes. With
this change in the authority in religion, it also changed the way some people political authority, as
if they did not need to rely on the higher power of a minister, the there is no need of a higher power
ruling over the government. This thinking also caused the The long term effect of the American...

Unfortunately, the Americans victory and Native Americans support for the British created a
pretense for justifying the rapid, and often brutal expansion into the western territories. Native
American tribes would continue to be displaced and pushed further west throughout the nineteenth
century. Ultimately, American independence marked the beginning of the end of what had

Winston s Distortion Of Family In 1984 By George Orwell
Within the novel 1984, the Party has perverted many traditional human values. The Party has
distorted the minds of the citizens of Oceania so that they believe what is happening is right.
The Party has destroyed the value of true family, honesty, loyalty and love. For example, the
Party encourages the breakup of families. In fact, the protagonist in 1984, Winston Smith, drifted
apart from his wife, Katherine, due to the Party s distortion of family. The Party told Oceania
citizens that the only recognized purpose of marriage was to beget children for the service of the
Party (65). Katherine took this advice to heart. Katherine did not enjoy the sexual act of marriage,
she did it as she called it our duty to the party (67). However, because she could not bear a child

it; they made you believe it. Honesty was ripped apart within the walls of the cells. For example,
Winston was tortured because he was being honest in saying that 2+2=4. O Brien held up four

  • 2. Advantage Of Competitive Intelligence The concept Competitive Intelligence has a rich tradition (Juhari and Stephens, 2006), and it has strong bases in military science and holds a rich history dating back to more than 5,000 years (Tao and Prescott, 2000).. In the recent history, especially in the management field, this concept has been examined for many times under different titles. For example, Aguilar (1967) and Fahey and King (1977) invented the phrase environmental scanning, which concentrated on how the executives scan their organizations environment. Likewise, over time other labels have been utilized in prior studies to identify competitive intelligence. Like: Business intelligence (Cleland and King, 1975; Pearce, 1976). • 3. I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings Literary Analysis Author Information: Maya Angelou, both the writer and protagonist of I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, spent the majority of her childhood in Stamps, Arkansas in the wake of her parent s divorce at the age of three. She, along with her older brother, lived with their grandmother (Annie Henderson), whom they call Momma, at the only black store in the segregated town of Stamps. Annie later became a big influence in her life and helped her develop self confidence and pride. Growing up, Maya had to deal with her insecurities over her looks and the rejection and abandonment of her biological parents. Southern racism is also a concern and appears throughout her life in the form of humiliation and lynch mobs. From Momma s store, Maya watches the pitiful cotton pickers as they travel to and from work every day. At the age of eight, Maya s father (Annie s son) unexpectedly shows up to take her and her brother Bailey to live with Vivian, their mother, in St. Louis, Missouri. When Maya gets a tooth ache, Momma drags her across town to the only dentist in Stamps (who happens to be white), and he proceeds to insult her, saying he would rather place his hands in a dogs mouth than in hers. An example of indirect racism would be when Bailey encounters the body of a dead, rotting black man and witnesses a white man s satisfaction at seeing the body. • 5. The Problem Of Prison Population After decades trying to prevent it, prison population continued to increase. Mandatory minimum sentences and the privatization created more prisoners, rather than cutting down on the amount incarcerations. Since the 1980 s, the prison population has quadrupled and today one in every one hundred adults are in prison(Mandatory Minimums (HBO)). Infact, America leads the world in prisoners with 20% of the earth s prison population (The Prison Crisis). In a study done by The American Prospect, charts and graphs provide information about the overpopulation crisis. The data from the charts show that while the crime rate has decreased, the rate of incarceration has been on a steady incline since 1990 (Waldman). America also leads the world in the number of prisoners 760 prisoners per 100,000 population (Waldman). Not only does America have more prisoners than developed countries, like Russia, the united states beats undeveloped countries as well. Rwanda, which has the highest amount of prisoners in Africa, has 595 prisoners per 100,000 population (Waldman). The overpopulation of prisons in America creates poor conditions for the inmates and with each prisoner, more money has to go into the prison system, hurting the economy. When a person convicted of a crime cannot pay the set bail, they are forced to stay in prison while their trial goes on. This means that a person could be completely innocent but would still have to face the same punishments that an actual criminal would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Nickel And Dimed By Barbara Ehrenreich There are many families out there who are currently struggling to make ends meet. Regardless of their hard work and commitment, the economy will not take pity. I wish I could say that it was not always like this. Unfortunately, no real change has taken place within the past few years. It may not be as difficult as the time of the Great Depression, but who s to say that we have recovered from it? My claim is supported by Barbara Ehrenreich, an American author, who published a novel called Nickel and Dimed which digs deep into the economic situation in the early 90 s. Ehrenreich decided to run an experiment becoming a blue collar worker to see if she can manage to make a living on low wages. She later blogs of Nickel and Dimed in 2011 to see... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The cost for places to live like hotels, motels, or trailer parks may be within reason, but not enough for a blue collar worker s salary. The difficulty in securing a place to live is not uncommon, and many have made ways to work around it like sharing apartments. Ehrenreich details these types of situations in her novel like Tina, another server, and her husband [who] are paying $60 a night for a room in the Days Inn...[or] Joan... [who] lives in a van parked behind a shopping center at night and showers in Tina s motel room (pg. 25). Examples taken from Ehrenreich s novel shows us the struggles that many have had to go through to secure a place to live. It isn t to say that these people don t work hard, but, unfortunately, this is the best they get for the work they put in and the pay they receive. Now it becomes difficult, if finding a place to live during a prosperous age wasn t hard enough, try finding one during the time of recession. Job losses are very common during this age, and with that comes the difficulty to afford proper housing. Most end up on the street, and others barely struggle to stay sheltered whether it be in their car, assuming they still have one or staying in public shelters. Ehrenreich mentions in her 2011 blog that, Housing expert Peter Dreier says that people who ve lost their jobs, or, at least, their second jobs, cope by doubling or tripling up in overcrowded apartments, or by paying 50 or 60 or even 70 percent of ... • 8. Thornton Research Paper An increase in the production of domestic magazines, primarily aimed at women, coincided with the stricter expectations of female behaviour. The Lady s Magazine, in which the exposГ© of Thornton appeared, was the first to survive any length of time. It was issued monthly and contained news but largely consisted of poetry, sheet music and stories. Its cost made it largely an upper class magazine, as it was the equivalent of a full day s pay of a skilled artisan. Lower class literature too experienced a large growth in production. Both sexes would have read about Thornton s story in the newspaper. While it is clear that women read newspapers, the size of the female readership remains extremely unclear . It was this female readership that the articulators of separate spheres ideology were concerned with reaching. The basic premise of the separate spheres was that the public sphere of political life and employment was naturally the space of men and the domestic sphere of the home was the realm of women. The conscious articulation of this idea in the media of the nineteenth century was the product of fears of societal instability, of which the breakdown of familial and sexual order became a striking metaphor . Domestic magazines and newspapers worked to create and proliferate a baseline of acceptable behaviour for women and offered definitions of what would be tolerated. The attempts in the print media to reflect the model behaviour for the sexes is apparent the representations and phrasing of Thornton s appearances, as seen in Chapter ... Rule of Law : The essential requirements of intentional torts are the elements of intent, injury, damages and causation. The concept of intention does not require that Defendant (D) know that his/her act will cause harm to the Plaintiff (P), but must know with substantial certainty that their act will result in certain outcomes (landing of the plane on the P s land). To successfully make a claim against D, P must prove that D acted with purpose when he landed the plane on P s property, that the act was intentional and it lead to the injury suffered by P (loss of land and crops) and the resulting damages to P s land and crops. [3] However, as a defense privilege we have to review the law in terms of implied consent (implied in fact and implied in law) and the application of necessity case law. The urgent nature of the circumstances and the availability of limited options (sub division of homes, trees of vacant land) provide a basis for implied consent. Implied in fact consent would be an objective manifestation as a reasonable person would consent under the circumstances especially when taking into account the loss of life against the loss of property. Per case law, the courts have ruled that loss of life over shadows loss of property. Similarly, implied in law consent would need to be reviewed under the rule of law and the benefit of the public, considering the options between landing on a housing tract versus landing on a vacant farm where the potential of damages would be significantly lower. The same elements of urgency and limited available options also provide the defense privilege under the rule of law of necessity . If the defense falls under the preview of public ... • 21. The Cartographer Wasps And The Anarchist Bees Summary The Cartographer Wasps and the Anarchist Bees by E. Lily Yu tells the fictional story of the relationship between an overpowering wasp community and a docile bee community. The wasps take over the bees, basically rule over them, and instill their very different way of life on them. A group of anarchist bees that oppose the wasp government secretly escape and begin a new community. The story abruptly ends though when both the cartographer wasps and anarchist bees die from humans and the cold. Throughout The Cartographer Wasps and the Anarchist Bees, Yu creates tension to build toward the climax. Simply put, tension is trouble on the page. Writers use it to create conflict and make readers uneasy, off balance, worry or hope. Yu employs tension multiple times in this piece. One being on page 23, when the foundress wasp has the first two ambassador bees killed upon arrival and then finally meets with the third and has a very aggressive conversation. • 22. Can Officers Effectively Prosecute Domestic Violence... When prosecuting criminal domestic violence cases too many officers constructed their entire case only on statements made by the victim. However, victims of domestic violence are more likely than victims of other violent crime to recant or refuse to cooperate in prosecutorial efforts (Breitenbach, 2008, p. 1256). Officers must consider that victims of domestic violencemay refuse to testify because of fear of retaliation, intimidation, financial dependence, emotional attachment, and /or because they reunited with the batterer. Thus, any out of court statements made by witnesses and/or victims to law enforcement must be excluded unless the defendant had prior opportunity to cross examine the unavailable witnesses (Byrom, 2005). The only non testimonial statements that would be utilized in court, without direct testimony from the witness and/or complainant, were the taped 911 phone calls reporting the incident. If the victim testified, their previous statements would be allowed as evidence without limitation because the witness was subjected to cross examination. However, if the victim refused to testify, any testimonials made to law enforcement were not allowed as evidence in the court proceedings. In light of these legal changes, officers needed to construct their domestic violence cases under the assumption that the victim would not be participating in the prosecution. The case commenced at the time the call was received by dispatch up until the case was presented to a judge or jury. Therefore, officers needed to complete the proper procedures to secure recordings of the calls made to the 911 dispatch center to report the domestic situation. In addition to having the subject, victim and/or witnesses complete written and/or video statements, the officer must diligently identify, collect, and photograph evidence at the crime scene (Ellison, 2002). As a slave, Harriet Jacobs experienced a great amount of pain and suffering while her and her family members were slaves of Dr. Flint. She narrated her experiences after realizing she was a slave at six years old. From an analysis of Harriet Jacobs experience in slavery, she suffered more from psychological abuse because she was treated like property, manipulated by Dr. Flint, and emotionally depressed. One of the reasons why Harriet Jacobs suffers more from psychological abuse was because she was treated as property. Upon the death of her generous mistress, Harriet Jacobs was later relocated into her mistress niece s house. From the time that Jacobs and her brother William first walked into their new master s home, they knew their lives were about to get worse: When we entered our new home we encountered cold looks, cold words, and cold treatment, (Ch.2). Helicobacter Pylori Research Paper Helicobacter Pylori at Tight Junctions Prior to the isolation of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori} by Robin Warren and Barry Marshall in 1982, it was theorized that peptic ulceration, an ailment first described in 1857 by William Brinton, stemmed from poor diet, tobacco use, and stress due to the failure to definitively identify a causative agent as well as the belief that the inhospitable environment within the human stomach resulted in its sterility (Tanenbaum 2005). Because physicians were ignorant to the existence of H. pylori, individuals suffering from peptic ulcerations underwent ineffective treatments for over a century. The successful isolation of H. pylori and identification of its role in gastric diseases earned Warren and Marshall a joint Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2005 (The Nobel Prize 2005). It this work, Aristotle portrays man as an inherently political animal, with logos and the ability to distinguish injustice from justice. He purports that the purpose of humanity within nature is to live together and seek justice. Since human beings live as political animals, the polis arises naturally. The purpose of the polis is not merely to help humans live, but to help them live well, as morally sound, well educated citizens (Nederman 287). Speaking of the democratic state specifically, he says, the basis of a democratic state is liberty...one principle of liberty is for all to rule and be ruled in turn....another is that a man should live as he likes (Book 6.2). In other words, freedom based upon equality (Book 6.2). This, alongside his the purpose of the polis itself (to educate and assist citizens in living well and seeking justice) forms the foundation of the promise of democracy within the selections from Aristotle s Politics. I hadn t considered expense when it comes to collecting a sample but apparently it can be very costly. For instance, if a sample size of 4,000 were selected each time there was a poll, the increase in accuracy would be very small, and would not justify the increase in cost. Now, I believe this to be true because I do think that the people behind things like the Gallop Poll are very smart statisticians and would not lie when it comes to what effects the sample size has on the accuracy of results. It makes absolute sense to me that specific ways of measuring the accuracy of samples have been done for many years and the processes and results have been analyzed thoroughly with each design. The poll of such a small number of people do not invalidate the results since for instance, as stated in the article, if the sample size was raised to 2,000 instead of 1,000, for a Gallup Poll there would be a gain of only 1% in terms of accuracy, and a 100% increase in terms of cost. In 1998, the Blair government announced that the citizens rights would be safeguarded and strengthened through incorporating the European Convention on Human Rights into UK law. However, this created a problem as the UK now has two sets of rights those built up under Common Law and those in the Human Rights Act. These two sets of rights may conflict and, in addition, cases can be taken using these rights to both the UK Supreme Court and the European Court of Human Rights (which is the supreme court for the European Convention on Human Rights). The UK judiciary is divided on how to resolve this issue. The centrepiece of Labour s programme of constitutional reform was undoubtedly devolution. This was achieved with remarkably few problems. There now seems no likelihood that the new arrangements could be reversed, even by a Conservative administration. The election on 6 May 1999 of a Parliament in Scotland, with extensive powers of primary legislation as well as tax raising, and an Assembly in Wales, with powers of secondary legislation only, will have a profound impact on governance within the UK. • 41. Passion in A Midsummer Night s Dream Essay Passion in A Midsummer Night s Dream Shakespeare s A Midsummer Night s Dream may come off as a simple comedy but is a complex play with many interesting aspects. Passion, a significant characteristic, is often expressed through the play. Characters in the play show passion for different reasons; Puck passions for mischief, Helena for Demetrius love and Bottom for theatrics, are a few of the many examples. Passion shows much significance, being the most important characteristic in the play. Puck is a mischievous sprite, involved with most magical events in the play. Often playing tricks for his own enjoyment or by his master, Oberon s, commands, Puck is depicted as a young, deceptive character. When first discovered as Robin... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Being the only character, other than Bottom, to enter both the human and fairy world, the play makes Puck to be the protagonist. While there his trickery and trouble are antagonistic in nature, his vital part is that of a positive character, ultimately resolving all problems. Puck treats the entire idea of love as madness, the idea Shakespeare was conveying with his trickery. Helena is portrayed as a desperate character, her passion being for the love of Demetrius. Helena spends most of the story pursuing Demetrius in hope of receiving any form of affection in return, only receiving affection due to magic. While chasing Demetrius, Helena says What worser place can I beg your love, And yet a place of high respect with me, Than to be usГЁd as you use your dog? (II.i.208 210) Helena, knowing demeaning herself to the position of a dog, believes that she is not worthy enough for such authority, therefore hoping she will be given the honour. Helena compares herself to a dog in the sense that the more Demetrius rejects her, the harder she will try to receive any emotion from her master. Although heartbroken by Demetrius hatred for her, Helena showers Demetrius with comments, only to be continuously beaten down. This is explicitly shown when Helena comments on Demetrius demeanor and is, again rejected, saying, You draw me, you hard hearted adamant; But yet you draw not iron, for my heart Is true as steel: leave you your power ... Hester Prynne Heroism One of the most enduring conflicts concerning Nathaniel Hawthorne s novel The Scarlet Letter is over whose story is primarily being told: Hester Prynne s or Arthur Dimmesdale s. Hester s feminine heroism tends to domineer the novel in contrast to the distraught clergyman, so often at a loss in the complexities of human existence. Hawthorne illustrates Dimmesdale s relentless strive towards immortality brought on by the strict repression of Puritan society, all the while maintaining the transcendental impression that protests his irrational means of coping with guilt. Hawthorne establishes Hester Prynne as the immediate heroine of the novel, but as one observes the story of Arthur Dimmesdale unfold, it becomes clearer that his struggle is that ... Dimmesdale s confession, though theatrical and heartbreaking at first glance is, in the end quite selfish and reveals that his nemesis an event that cannot be avoided, usually as a result of the hero s hamartia could have been prevented entirely. In the late 20th century, publications would take on trainees every year on top of the staff they had. Whereas, in the 21st century most companies will only recruit where there are vacancies (Holmes et al, 2013, p285). This is because now employers expect student journalists to have real world work experience. And so, contacts are considerably valuable to get into the industry as it allows the student to have previous experience on a more casual basis, but will look impressive to future employers. Therefore, those without experience are less likely to get a job as others will be favoured. For example, todays newspaper editors were in newsrooms doing journalism, rather than studying it as a degree (Synge, 2010, p17). Previously job apprenticeships were common, but now there is a trend towards formal pre entry qualifications and post graduate programmes such as the NCTJ (Holmes et al, 2013, p280). And so, having a degree does not guarantee a lasting successful journalism career (Synge, 2010, p17). The First Great Awakening in the 1730s and 1740s presented a new logic that had people begin to reflect on the spirituality in daily life, causing a majority of colonists to question the rule of Great Britain over them. The religious impact in the colonists from the Great Awakening caused the ministers to lose authority among those who now studied the Bible in their own homes.
