As a part of our new change framework the Change Journey (http://www.changejourney.org), we want to explain some of the theoretical background. This presentation is about the topic of complexity in organizational change.
Co-operatives become isomorphic to capital-based companies in aspects they do not notice. One of them is co-operative auditing and diagnosis. Although we know, they are personal and not capital partnerships we usually diagnose them and report to the board about the organizational results as venture capital companies do. If persons and not capital are main goals of co-operatives, we should diagnose persons and report to the persons how they are meeting their goals with the co-operative. After presenting a few slides of CoopIndex 1.0, I invite all interested to participate in the development of a new tool CoopIndex 2.0 which is sponsored by my EU research fellowship. According to me, such diagnosis is indispensable for the development of competency to solve many participation dilemmas of our century. I present nine of them and try to prove that they are deeply rooted in our human nature, and our culture and we really have to be highly competent in seeing their complexity. The historical evidence gathered by Eugeniusz Kwiatkowski proves that the common understanding of the world complexity leads to the development of nations. This law gives us not only hope but also the direction to our efforts.
In this meetup we are going to look at a number of business problems, discuss the type of solutions that we would decide to implement, and then see how those problems were solved. All of the cases are based on real world business problems.
As it is a Sydney Limited WIP Society tradition, this will be a highly interactive and discussion based meetup.

A laboratory model of a dual active bridge dc-dc converter for a smart user n...Alessandro Burgio
The paper presents the application of a dual active bridge DC-DC converter for a smart user network that is a microgrid with a DC-powered local network (or DC bus). In such a microgrid the DC-DC converter connects a battery energy storage system to the DC bus. In a previous paper, the authors demonstrated that the DC-DC converter is able to assure a stable DC bus voltage to a reference value; performance was evaluated by means of numerical experiment using Simplorer. In this paper the DC-DC converter is further investigated using a 400W laboratory model of a smart user network; the laboratory results demonstrate that the converter provides a high level of reliability and resilience against disturbances.

The Change Journey is a radical approach to change. It is based on the paradigm that change in organizations is not a linear path from A to B. As many of us experience, what happens in a change process is largely unpredictable. Our Change Journey Map then helps you to navigate through uncertainty. This Map is inclusive - which means whatever tools and models you are used to can be incorporated. For all of you who are involved in a change process - we invite you to become a fellow traveller! Disaster Recovery
Disaster recovery has been the topic of study this week. What do you think is the most difficult and expensive disaster to plan for? Do you think companies plan adequately? In your experience (or research if you have no experience) what aspect is most lacking in corporate planning? Why do you think this is? What would you do to advise leadership in your company to prepare for a disaster? Be specific and explain your thought processes on this subject based on your learning.

I believe a natural disaster is the most expensive disaster to plan for. Natural disasters could occur at any point and time and location has a lot to do with it. Depending on the businesses geographic location it may have to deal with floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, electrical storms etc. The companies that I have had the pleasure to work for are located globally and have well established disaster recovery plans for natural disasters known to happen in that region. Because of the unpredictable nature natural disasters bring, not one company has a disaster recovery plan that is readily available for every situation. Funding for possible disasters that have a low chance of occurring may be a lacking aspect in corporate planning, since at the end of the day in business investments must make sense. Also advising leadership on shortages or delays of necessary materials can keep bandages, disinfectant, and medicine cabinets up to date in case of an unexpected emergencies.

The Psychological Drivers of Bureaucracy: Protecting the Societal Goals of an Organization
This chapter examines the psychological drivers of bureaucracy and the ways to prevent bureaucracy. It finds that bureaucracy is a recurring theme in most organizations (Janssen, Wimmer, & Deljoo, 2015). The reason it is common in many companies, even in non-bureaucratic organizations, is that it is highly beneficial in some circumstances. It can increase work satisfaction and reduce the feelings of alienation and stress. Despite having numerous benefits, the downsides of bureaucracy outweigh the upsides.
The first driver of bureaucracy is habits. Habits are formed through the repetition of certain behaviors. The first time one encounters a situation, they may not know what to do. But after a few times of practice, they respond automatically to learned behavior. The behavioral patterns one repeats often become automatic when faced with a similar situation. Because habits require minimum cognitive effort, most responses to situations are habitual. The just stated explains in part why breaking the bureaucratic mindset is very difficult in organizations.
The second driver of bureaucracy is authoritarianism. Authority is the ability to influence, create, and maintain oneness in an environment. It eliminates all sources of diversity and focusses on maximizing sameness. Authoritarianism is a trait that is manifested in some situations and not in others. Individuals are more likely to exhibit authoritarian behavior if they are brought into an environment that requires them to act. Bureaucracy is a form of authoritarianism.
One of the ways to prevent bureaucracy is promoting worker professionalism. Workers should not feel inadequate. Instead, they should be empowered to contribute to the realization of the organization goals. While bureaucracy is a problem that affects many organizations, it is a problem that has effective protective measures.

Adani SEBI investigation revealed that the latter had sought information from five foreign jurisdictions concerning the holdings of the firm’s foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) in relation to the alleged violations of the MPS Regulations. Nevertheless, the economic interest of the twelve FPIs based in tax haven jurisdictions still needs to be determined. The Adani Group firms classed these FPIs as public shareholders. According to Hindenburg, FPIs were used to get around regulatory standards.

2. We all carry images of organizations in our mind. Most of us still believe an organization is a machine. please watch the following video clip…
3. The reality is different. Organizations are complex social systems. (from: zeno on Flickr)
4. What makes an organization a complex system? All people have individual concerns, purposes, and circumstances. All people in an organization make many unsupervised decisions, every day. All people in an organization are connected in different ways to other people within and without the organization. There is a close to infinite number of external and internal influence factors that shape the destiny of the organization. Social systems have a strong urge to protect their integrity.
5. 1. All people have individual concerns, purposes, and circumstances. Before you continue, please read more about this model of human needs of Manfred Max-Neefhere. Subsistence Freedom from Want (Income/Livelihood) Protection Freedom from Fear andAbuse (Ground Rules) Identity Freedom To BeProud of Yourself(Self-Esteem) Affection Freedom fromRejection (Dignity/Teamwork) Creation Freedom to Create YourOwn Future (New Ideas) Freedom Freedom fromCoercion (Autonomy) Understanding Freedom fromUncertainty (Information Access) Leisure Freedom fromExhaustion (Stress Reduction) Participation Freedom fromExclusion (Inclusivity)

9. What is, honestly, the expectancy range of what will happen tomorrow, the day after, and beyond? Before you continue, please read more about decision making in uncertain times here

18. …Each of these happenings add to uncertainty. No computer can calculate the effect of these compounding influence factors.
19. 5. Social systems have a strong urge to protect their integrity An organization can be compared with a cell. The main purpose of the cell is to survive and to reproduce. HumbertoMaturana and Francisco Varela called these self-protecting and self-generating behavior “autopoiesis”. Any organization tries to make sure that it is not corrupted, which can easily happen in a change process. This is often felt as “change resistance”, but it is a natural behavior. Here is some reading for you to do before you proceed: Autopoiesis(Wikipedia)Autopoeisis in the business organization (PDF) Autopoiesis in virtual organizations (PDF)
20. How to deal with complexity in organizations? Source: Cognitive Edge Most change processes aresituated in the left quadrant (complex), few are in the knowable sphere, some are in the chaos sphere and none are in the known sphere. This is why the effect of an intervention into a system cannot be predicted. The quicker we accept that, the easier we can find strategies to cope with it.
