The document discusses film certification and ratings for sci-fi films in the UK. It explains that the British Board of Film Classification decides on film ratings based on levels of sex/nudity, violence, language, drugs, and other content. It finds that most sci-fi films receive a PG-13 rating due to frightening or intense scenes, violence/gore, or sex/nudity. It then defines the various film rating classifications used in the UK - U, PG, 12A, 15, 18, and R - and provides sci-fi movie examples for some of the ratings.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2. Film certification
Q: Who decides what certificate a film is given?
A: The British Board of Film Classification
Q: How do they decide?
A: They decide on the levels of:
- Sex & Nudity
- Violence & threat
- Discrimination
- Language
- Drugs & imitable behaviour (Very few of
these; if they are, they have to have a clear
negative effect or moral lesson)
3. Film Certifications of Sci-Fi
films
Sci-Fi films usually don’t have a set certification
but having done research I found that most Sci-Fi
film’s have a certification of PG 13.
This is usually because of many reasons but when
broken down; mostly comes to
Frightening/Intense Scenes, Violence & Gore or
Sex & Nudity as stated by the IMDB.
4. What does each film certificate
mean?
In order to protect children from unsuitable and
even harmful content in films and videos and to
give consumers information they might need
about a particular film or video before deciding
whether or not to view it, the BBFC examines and
age rates films and videos before they are
released. This independent scrutiny prior to
release ensures the highest possible level of
protection and empowerment.
Examples of the film classifications are as follows…
5. U - UNIVERSAL
The U symbol stands for Universal. A U
film should be suitable for audiences
aged four years and over.
Eg: Wall-E is amongst
those Sci-Fi films that
are suitable for all
audiences aged 4+
6. Pg – Parental Guidence
PG stands for Parental
Guidance. This means a film is
suitable for general viewing,
but some scenes may be
unsuitable for young children.
Eg: Star Wars: Episode V -
The Empire Strikes Back
was rated PG for sci-fi
action violence.
7. 12 / 12A
Films classified 12A and video works
classified 12 contain material that is not
generally suitable for children aged under
12. No one younger than 12 may see a
12A film in a cinema unless accompanied
by an adult. Includes mid violence, threat,
sex but is usually discreet.
Eg: Avatar was rated PG 12+
because of it’s intense epic battle
sequences and warfare, sensuality,
language and some smoking.
8. 15
No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a
15 rated video. 15 rated works are not suitable for children under 15
years of age. Includes Moderate presence of factors but usually will not
dwell on detail.
9. 18
Films rated 18 are for adults. No-one under 18 is allowed to see an 18
film at the cinema or buy / rent an 18 rated video. No 18 rated works
are suitable for children. Includes very strong violence, strong sexual
activity, strong blood & gore, strong horror etc…
10. R - Restricted
These films are Restricted and are
only for adults. Children are not
allowed to watch these movies.
Include strong horror, strong nudity
and sexual activity.
Eg: Alien was rated as an
R rated film because of it’s
sci-fi violence/gore and
language
