What it’s the
• The British Board of Film Classification is an independent body which has classified cinema
films since it was set up in 1912. videos/ DVDs where also added to their guidelines since the
Video Recordings Act was passed in 1984.
• This website offers guide lines to distribution companies on what age rating the movie
should get it also helps allow them to target a specific target market
• I shall be exploring the different guide lines they pass for their different ages ratings
throughout this presentation at the end I will predict what our group films age rating will
be, why and how it will effect the distribution and content if this film
RESEARCH
CLASSIFICATIONS
Suitable for all
They rate films and videos aimed at very young viewers, such
as Toy Story 3 or Cars, U. Films or videos with this certificate
should raise no issues in terms of discrimination, drugs,,
imitable behaviour, language, nudity, sex, threat or violence.
A U will generally contain positive messages about loyalty,
honesty and friendship amongst children. The film or video
may well have a happy ending for the child and the overall
tone should be one of reassurance.
PG stands for Parental Guidance. This means a film is suitable
for general viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for
young children. A PG film should not unsettle a child aged
around eight or older. Parents should note whether the
content of the film its self may upset younger, or more
sensitive, children.
The 12A requires an adult to accompany any child under
12 seeing a 12A film at the cinema. At 12, moderate
violence is allowed. The BBFC's Guidelines state that strong
language (e.g. 'f***') may be passed at 12, depending on
the manner in which it is used. verbal sex references should
not go past what is considered suitable for young
teenagers
Parental guidance

• strong violence
• frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***').
• portrayals of sexual activity
• strong verbal references to sex
• sexual nudity
• brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to
sexual violence
• discriminatory language or behaviour
• drug taking
If the film is a age rating of 18 then you can expect there to
be scenes of a sexual nature which tries to inform the
viewer with use of some explicit pictures. The violence in a
18 rated film also takes a step up, there will be scenes in
the film where there are high amounts of blood and injury.
Drugs may be also shown freely with detail and
concentration been shown .An example of a 18 rated film
would be Paranormal activity 4

THE VERDICT OF
OUR THEILER
OUR THRILLER MOVIE
Certificate For Our
Movie
The Implications Of That
Certificate
From what I have explored from the research into the
British Board of Film Classification the board has set some
strict guide line that should be met in terms of age
certificates. In regards to thriller films age certificates vary
from age restrictions, how evener they only go as low as 12.
this may be because they may contain some degree of
violence, strong language and sex related subjects, which
may upset younger audiences or expose them to explicit
behaviour or verbal subjects. Take in all of this information
into consideration, our movie may be suited as a 12/15. I
am undecided on which of the two to pick due to the vast
gap in differences each have from on another.
The implications of a 12
Our film being a 12 would have many benefits and draw backs. One of
the benefits would be that we would have a much wider target
audience, as a result of this the film can be marketed to more people
as a result this would help for the film to brake even faster and make a
profit due to the looser much more unrestricted age rating. How ever
this comes with cost of the film makers being given less freedom to
create what they may actually want.
The implications of a 15
Our film being a 15 would have many benefits and draw backs. This
has the opposite benefits such as the film makers being able to use
more profanity than before adding to their freedom. Having a high
rating could also add to the realism of the film. How ever the
distributor would have to market a more specific audience meaning
they wouldn’t make as much of a turn over as they would if they where
