MEDIA EVALUATION
Question 4 – Who would be the
audience for your media product?
THE AGE CLASSIFICATIONS
Classification Description
The U symbol stands for Universal. A U film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and over. At U
they only allow infrequent use of very mild bad language. Potentially dangerous or anti-social behavior
which young children may copy, must be clearly disapproved of.
PG stands for Parental Guidance. This means a film is suitable for general viewing, but some scenes may
be unsuitable for young children. A PG film should not unsettle a child aged around eight or older.
Parents should consider whether the content may upset younger, or more sensitive, children.
Films classified 12A and video works classified 12 contain material that is not generally suitable for children
aged under 12. No one younger than 12 may see a 12A film in a cinema unless accompanied by an
adult. Adults planning to take a child under 12 to view a 12A film should consider whether the film is
suitable for that child.
No-one under 15 is allowed to see a 15 film at the cinema or buy/rent a 15 rated video. 15 rated works
are not suitable for children under 15 years of age.
The following could be shown in 15 rated films:
• strong violence
• frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***').
• portrayals of sexual activity
• strong verbal references to sex
• sexual nudity
• brief scenes of sexual violence or verbal references to sexual violence
• discriminatory language or behaviour
• drug taking
Films rated 18 are for adults. No-one under 18 is allowed to see an 18 film at the cinema or buy / rent an
18 rated video. No 18 rated works are suitable for children.
The following may be shown in 18 rated movies:
• very strong violence
• frequent strong language (e.g. 'f***') and / or very strong language (e.g. ‘c***’)
• strong portrayals of sexual activity
• scenes of sexual violence
• strong horror
• strong blood and gore
• real sex (in some circumstances)
• discriminatory language and behavior
EXAMPLES OF 12/12A RATED MOVIES
The Amazing Spiderman 2 – This film contains
moderate violence and threat, it is rated 12A
because nobody over the age of 12 can
watch it unless accompanied by an adult.
In comparison, with our product, this movie
contains some elements that we have
intended to include, some examples of these
are moderate violence, this is used when the
victim Is getting beat up. Also threat is used
throughout our product with the gang
threatening the victim.
Now You See Me – This movie contains moderate sex references, violence, threat
and strong language, it is rated 12A because nobody over the age of 12 can
watch it unless accompanied by an adult.
In terms of elements in this film that make it an 12/12A rated movie, our product
contains some elements but on the other hand, some elements are missing. The
two elements that we have included in our product are threat and violence, this is
included when the fighting scene is taking place. However, the elements of this
12A rated movie that we haven’t included are strong language and sexual
references as we produced our product in college and were unable to include
these.
EXAMPLES OF 15 RATED MOVIES
Montana - This movie contains strong bloody violence,
strong language, sex references and drug use, it is
rated 15 by BBFC because it contains many of the 15
classification elements.
In comparison with our product, this movie contains
elements that we have not included in our video. The
reason for this is because we were unable to include
any drugs, sexual references or strong language in our
opening sequence.
Black Sea - Black Sea contains strong language and
violence, it is rated 15 because some elements are for only
15 year olds and above to watch. One element within this
movie that we have included in our product is violence,
however we didn’t include strong language and do not
feel as though we have included enough aspects for our
product to be classed as a 15.
EXAMPLES OF 18 RATED MOVIES
Sin City – this movie contains strong bloody violence, strong
sex, nudity and drug use. It is rated an 18 movie because
anybody under this age can not view this movie because
of the content within it. In comparison, with our product,
we have not included any elements of this 18 movie
because our product was created in college and the
content within it can be offensive to some people.
Kidnapped - this movie contains strong bloody violence,
threat and sexual violence. We have only included one
element of this 18 rated film in our product, we have used
an element of threat throughout our product, this is
included when the victim is wanted by the gang.
However, we have decided not to include the other
content of an 18 movie in our product because it can
cause offense amongst some people.
EXAMPLES OF CLASSIFIED SUB-GENRE MOVIES
Fight Club 18 - This movie is
a physiological thriller sub-
genre and contains strong
Violence which makes it a
18 rated movie, it was
released in 1999.
The shining 15 – The Shining is a
15 rated movie because of the
strong violence and language
that is used throughout the film.
This movie was released in 1980.
This movie is also a physiological
thriller sub-genre.
Rear Window PG –
This movie is a
physiological thriller
and is rated PG, this
is because of the
Mild violence used
throughout.
WHAT CLASSIFICATION IS MY PRODUCT?
In my opinion, out of all the classification age ranges (U, PG, 12/12A, 15, 18) I would say
that our product is classified 15. There are a few reasons for this, the first reason is
because we have included moderate violence, this is shown when the victim is being
targeted by the gang when been beaten up. Also another element of a 15 rated
movie that we have included in our product is threat, we used this because its suits the
age group that we have aimed our product and is a stereotypical representation of
what modern teenagers are like. The convention of threat that we have included is
used again when the gang are “chasing” the victim, this creates suspense within the
audience and is a very popular element of a typical 15 rated movie.
Drug taking also is what makes our product aimed at an audience of 15 years or older,
although we have not included references to drugs in our opening sequence, later on
in the movie the use of drugs would be seen by the audience because this is what
people expect from gangs and is very stereotypical of them in modern films.
Strong language is also an element of a 15 rated movie that we have not included in
our opening sequence but again, would be included later in the movie.
SURVEY MONKEY
During the planning of our product, we decided to create a survey
monkey questionnaire for the rest of our class members to answer.
The purpose of this questionnaire was to find out what the majority
of the audience thought about the thriller genre in general.
A few examples of the sort of questions that we decided to ask the
audience were:
 What gender are you?
 What is your favourite thriller sub-genre?
 What is your preferred location in thriller movies?
 What gender would you associate hero's, villains and victims to
be?
The reason in why we carried out this questionnaire was because
we could decide on what elements of a stereotypical thriller we
can include in our product, with this we could also show a
classification age for our video depending on what elements were
included, for example violence, strong language, sexual scenes
etc.
