Discussion of Black Elk Speaks Essay
Discussion of Black Elk Speaks Black Elk was a holy man of the Oglala band of the Lakota Sioux
nation. Black Elk interpreted his life as a holy man as the story of a mighty vision (BES, p. 2). As a
child, Black Elk was blessed with a great vision from the other world. In receiving his great vision,
Black Elk received a great power, a power to make over (BES, p. 201), a power to make things better
for sick and suffering individuals and nations. He did not know it at the time, but this vision would be
the blueprint of his life. It would guide him through times when he doubted his importance to his
people. He had other visions, but they all tied into the great vision he experienced as a child. Black

These Grandfathers presented Black Elk with gifts to help him on his journey. A wooden cup, a bow
and arrows, a white wing of cleansing, an herb to heal, a sacred pipe a flowering stick and the power
to make live and to destroy were the tools that were given to him. Then, the Grandfathers showed
Black Elk what was to become of his people. He was shown a holy tree which once had been
flowering and was now gone. The people he was supposed to lead were thin and starving, and Black
Elk cried as he saw the fate of his people. Once he was placed back in the world of his family he was
enlightened yet confused. He was unable to do anything with the powers he was given until he was
older. As he came to be a man, he was blessed with a gift of helping people. He worked curing
illnesses until he felt it was time that his life should take another turn. In 1883, the last of the bison
herds were killed. Black Elk could not understand why the Wasichus would kill animals without using
everything it had to offer. That year Black Elk said, All our people now were settling down in square
gray houses, scattered here and there across this hungry land, and around them the Wasichus had
drawn a line to keep them in. The nation s hoop was broken, and there was no center any longer for
the flowering tree. The people were in despair. (BES, p. 213 214) In 1886, as part of a show, Black Elk
traveled to London to study the Wasichus and their way of life. By studying

The Morphology Of Species Of Snakes
The term morphology refers to a division of biology that looks at the forms of living organisms and
the relationships between them and their physical structures. In terms of morphology, snakes are quite
interesting, especially when it comes to venomous snakes of Kansas. Here, we will describe snakes,
their structure, what they eat, how often, reproduction, habitat and other interesting facts about snakes
in general. Then, we will examine closely venomous snakes that are indigenous to Kansas. Snakes are
elongated, flexible, and limbless reptiles from the suborder Serpentes. There are approximately 2,900
different species of snakes. There are around 700 different species of venomous snakes and 250 of
these are able to kill a human with a single bite. Snake are generally carnivorous. They eat various
items such as termites, birds, eggs, mice, rabbits, and other reptiles/mammals. Snakes do not chew
their prey; they swallow it whole and their moveable maxillary allows them to swallow large prey
three times the size of their heads. They have rear facing teeth which helps them keep their prey
captive until they can swallow it. Some venomous snakes will inject their prey with venom while
constricting snakes will squeeze the breath from their prey until they die. Snakes do not need to hunt
food every day because they only eat once or twice per week. Large snakes such as anacondas and
pythons can survive for up to an entire year without food. Mostly snakes hunt at

Hultgren Construction Collapse Case Study
Summary: On December 2nd around 10:30 a.m., a building in downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota
collapsed. Fear stuck the hearts of many as they heard the deafening collapse of a downtown building
on 10th Street and Phillips Avenue. Many first responders and police quickly moved to try and find
survivors. Hundreds of people waited for survivors to be pulled out from the debris. Cheers erupted
when three hours after the collapse, firefighters found Emily Fodness alive underneath the rubble.
Sadly, Ethan McMahon, a construction worker, was found dead underneath the rubble almost five and
a half hours after Emily was rescued. Hultgren Construction is under investigation for causing the
collapse.

The permit they received did not allow for any structural work to be done, yet they posted a picture on
Facebook of themselves working on a load bearing wall. They were blatantly disobeying the law by
working on the wall. Others with a construction background and had seen a picture of the construction
on the wall say that Hultgren Construction did not have i beams and other equipment that are
necessary when working with a load bearing wall. It appears that they did not know how to do their
job properly. It is sad that the Hultgren Construction company went against the law and others had to
pay for the company s mistake. Hultgren Construction has had not previous safety violations. It is
unfortunate that their first violation caused a fatality.
There was many things that happened as a result of this building collapse and many things will happen
in the future as a result of it. This catastrophic event caused the area surrounding the collapsed
building to close down as there were fears that the surrounding buildings damaged from the rubble
might also collapse. This event lead to Ethan McMahon s death. His death may spur South Dakota
legislatures to create stricter construction laws and have more restrictions on permits. The collapse
might prompt people to tear down the neighboring buildings due to the fears that they are unstable and

United States Entry Into World War I
Commendable or Contempible: The United States entry into World War I
37,466,904. This is the total number of casualties during World War 1. The United States accounted
for 323,018 of those deaths. Almost 40 million deaths could have been avoided without World War 1.
So was the damage caused by World War 1 worth it? Was it beneficial for the United States to enter
the Great War. Yes, it was. The benefits accompanied with America entering the Great War largely
outweigh the detriments that the war brought. The United States should enter the Great War because
the war will benefit the United States economically, will help the United States gain a more powerful

In the early twentieth century, before the war began, the role of women was already changing
drastically. Women were working more, gaining a better education and having fewer children. Then,
during the war, women played a crucial role in aiding the war efforts. One way women assisted in the
war was moving into jobs that were previously vacated by men who were drafted into the war. Women
also assisted in munitions factories. These are factories that make war materials. Women could have
sewed uniforms or helped make weapons. These factories were the number one employer for women
during 1918. After the introduction of conscription in 1916 women began to work in jobs that were
traditional reserved for men. Employment rates for women during World War I went up from 23.6%
(1914) to 46.7% (1918). Because the population of women in America benefited the war efforts
greatly, in 1918, the women s suffrage amendment was passed in senate with the necessary 2/3 votes.
America s involvement in the Great War led directly to the passing of the 19th amendment, granting
women the right to vote.
It is now clear that the United States should enter the Great War because the war will benefit the
United States economically, will help the United States gain a more powerful military, and the end of
the war will lead to the 19th amendment thus allowing women to vote. The minimal

Analysis Of Soltice And Ransom By Tracy K. Smith
In her collection of poetry Life on Mars, Tracy K. Smith brings real world problems into focus with
Solstice and Ransom . The main idea in Solstice is the geese that forced the Hudson River plane crash
in New York, while Smith writes of the Somalian pirates and sea pollution in Ransom . However,
these are just the literal meanings behind the two poems that have deeper meanings relating to the
state of the world and how humans are playing a role in it, politically and physically. There is a
constant struggle in the poems Solstice and Ransom that where there is always an underdog, whether
it be protesters attempting to make a change or Somalian pirates fighting back because their fishing
waters have been corrupted. A main connection between these poems include their connection to the
time period that Tracy K. Smith s father passed away towards the end of 2008. Because of how
emotional and tragic this time period was to Smith, she holds onto the shreds of hope she had during
that time, including two major events portrayed in the poems. The literal meaning behind the poem
Solstice is the geese that caused flights to be disrupted at the JFK airport. These geese also flew into
pilot Chesley Sully Sullenberger and killed all engine power, making him perform a miracle crash
landing into the Hudson river. Ransom captures the story of Somalian pirates and why they have
naturally been forced into hijacking ships to make a living. The Maersk Alabama hijacking in early

destructive cult is a rigidly structured absolutist group usually under an authoritarian, charismatic

Such groups are usually thought of in terms of religion, although other types of cults can and do exist.

Computers And Its Impact On Modern Society Essay
Computers
In between 1943 and 1946, ENIAC was designed by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at University
of Pennsylvania, U.S. ENIAC was a modular computer, collected of separate panels to perform
different functions. Twenty of these parts were accumulators, which could not only add and subtract
but hold a ten digit decimal number in memory. Numbers were passed between these units across
several general purpose buses. In order to achieve its high speed, the panels had to send and receive
numbers, save the answer and produce the next operation, all without any moving parts. Key to its
usefulness was the ability to branch; it could produce different operations, depending on the sign of a
computed result. ENIAC contained 17,468 vacuum tubes, 7200 crystal diodes, 1500 relays, 70,000
resistors, 10,000 capacitors and about 5,000,000 hand soldered joints. It weighed more than 30 tons,
was roughly 2.4m × 0.9m × 30m in size, and consumed 150 kW of electricity. This power requirement
led to the rumour that whenever the computer was switched on, lights in Philadelphia dimmed.

Lesson one: The Plot in the Story
Introduction
Good stories have a beginning, middle and end. But editors look for the plot arc, or some variation of
it. If you are an established, well recognized author you might tweak The arc model, but the rest of us
must slug through it. And for good reason. The arc will pull your reader through the story. It is the
reason why your reader will turn the pages until the very end. It also helps the writer focus their story
line, cut out the parts that are slowing it down, and highlight the parts that help move the story. Trust
me, in the end The arc will be your friend.
If all of this comes as a surprise to you then you have been reading wonderful books or watching
wonderful movies/TV shows

Fresno State Sports Research Paper
The Fresno State Wrestling programming had been dormant for some time, however this past Friday it
came back with one of the largest crowds ever in the programs history. The once popular sport on
campus till its cut back in 2005 until now has found the fan base that quite honestly never left.
Something a lot of individuals in the valley have been waiting for a long time. The wrestling mat was
center stage, the lights were on bright and it was quite the display of the magic, excitement in terms of
all fans waiting in the stands. If the first meet was any to indicate the present and volume in which the

future of the programming.
The lighting of the event also had an important factor creating that atmosphere overall for the
wrestling, in providing that professional touch to the event. In creating the must see event of the
evening as I overheard group individuals put it. The contribute factor of not just the light of the event
but the overall production that went into making the event the success that it was great to see. The
event s production had that simplistic look to it, that its nothing to fancy yet something that one would
remember and something from what I took note of the crowd seemed to enjoyed.
The Crowd: Reaction and Fan Engagement In any sporting events it s the crowd that can make or
break an event, needless to say the wrestling community made its voice heard, when needed. The
seemly intense focus of the crowd an on individual matches was something that typically you do see
in a lot of other sports. Its almost a quite type feel that collective everyone understands. Which can
also change with a swift move by the athletes in creating such a loud roar from the crowd in
appreciate. The intense of it all was a constant back and forward from the crowd in showing spirt for
the event something is unique to the sport of wrestling. In continuing on that same motion, the fan

Essay On The Worst Plague
Worst Plagues in the History of Humanity Many terrible plagues struck the Earth but there are three
that hit the hardest. Smallpox, The Spanish Flu, and The Black Death are the three plagues. The are all
the most dehumanizing ways to die, and they also killed the most people making the death tolls rise
more than ever between 1340 1979. These three plagues spread rather rapidly for many reasons but
mainly because the people of these times majorly lacked hygiene. Religion, Upbringing, Culture, and
Traditions had a huge impact on who received Smallpox, The Spanish Flu, and The Bubonic Plague, it
also influenced how a persons body handled it.
Smallpox is a disease rare to humans. It is also known as Variola Versa(in Latin). It is caused by two
virus variants Variola Major, and Variola Minor. Variola Major is deadlier than Variola Minor with a
death rate of 30 35% while Variola Minor(causes a different disease called alastrim) kills only about
1% of the injured party. The survivors usually get characteristic scars, blindness, and for the males

Spring by Gerard Manley Hopkins
With every end, there is a beginning. When the cold winter ends, there is a new beginning in nature
where the trees and flowers start fresh as they grow once again. The poem Spring , takes us, readers,
to a setting where the place shows complete nature. We are to imagine aesthetic scenery where spring
has arrived and everything that happens during this season is happening right in front of us. The
speaker seems to appreciate nature so much that he sees the complete difference between the seasons
and that he admires the birth of the natural world. He explains his feelings in almost all aspects as he
describes the rinsing in his ears in one line which may mean that, his mind, soul, and body is refreshed
with what the natural sound that he hears during this season. As for him, he conceptualizes the natural
world as a pure creation of God and that it helps in spiritual awakening. Here is the interpretation and
analysis of the poem based on the sections that respect the grammar and meaning of its sentences:
Nothing is so beautiful as Spring When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush;
In the first line, the speaker says that there is no other thing that is as similar to the beauty of Spring.
With the dash after the word spring, it means that the speaker is trying to let the readers believe the
first statement that nothing is so beautiful as Spring. The weeds in wheels in the second line may
mean, that, weeds have grown in wheels or maybe the way the weeds

Persepolis The Veil Symbolism
Symbolism in Persepolis Symbols are seen in many places, on bathroom doors and in books and
novels. Wherever they are or whatever they are, all of these symbols mean something more beyond
the initial. The veil is one of the symbols in the book Persepolis that symbolizes the oppression of
women which means the constriction of personal Freedom that accompanies the Revolution. The veil
is a religious thing in today s days, Muslim ladies have to wear it every time they go outside the
house. Another symbol in the book Persepolis is the gold key and it symbolizes the power of the
government or the government s control. Another symbol in the book Persepolis is the cigarette and it
s what Marji use to feel as a grown up. There are a lot of symbols in the book Persepolis, of these
symbols are the veil in the way that it symbolizes a fashion statement, oppression, and the gold key in
the way that it symbolizes control of the government and the cigarette in the way that symbolizes the
grown up. The Veil is a symbol in the book Persepolis that symbolizes a fashion statement, like
wearing jeggings or a fedora. However, neither jeggings nor a fedora are closely tied with religious
fundamentalism. It is called in most countries a hijab, and its used for women to cover their hair and
its meant to be a protection for them. The Veil represents a symbol of oppression of women which
means the constriction of personal freedom that accompanies the revolution. It says in the book that
We didn t really like to wear the veil, especially since we didn t understand why we had to. It also
says, Then came 1980: the year it became obligatory to wear the veil at school. And it also says, We
found ourselves veiled and separated from our friends. What Is happening in this story is that the veil
is being forced to women to wear. In the first quote, they don t know why they were wearing the veil,
and they wanted to understand why. That means that they are forced to wear the veil everywhere. In
the second quote, they were forced to even wear the veil at school and mostly everywhere they go.

Persuasive Speech About Youth Suicide
Nicole: Man it would just warm my heart. I know too many people who have lost children. I know too
many people here in the Manitou Springs school district. There were two youth who took their lives in
one year. I mean it hits home across the nation of course across the globe. You study suicide rates for a
variety of other causes across the globe, but it s everywhere. El Paso County has one of the highest
rates of youth suicide so yeah I mean I would feel like I was actually providing true public and
community service by just doing as much as I possibly could to support families in order to prevent
that and to just bring some awareness to that. Half of it is just awareness and the ability to have the
conversation around it
Andrew: I think that that s huge Nicole and I think that s something that should really be talked about
and needs to be talked about. I also think as we re looking over not just messaging, but also
fundraising networks, we ve certainly seen an increase in youth homelessness in Manitou and
neighboring Colorado Springs and I think as you stated there s been an increase youth suicide and just
coming from my experience as a gay man I think there s some connections there. There would be a lot
of people in the LGBTQ community interested in helping people who are = committed to those sort of
issues with first being that LGBTQ youth make up about forty percent of the homeless population and
thus are more prone to teen suicide so I mean looking for different demographic and groups whether it
be looking at the LGBTQ community or the Latino community or whatnot I think you know it is not
just good for outreach and messaging to those communities, but also potentially fundraising bases as
well.
Nicole: Absolutely. I m so glad you brought that up because Urban Peak is an organization we have
down here. It s an amazing organization that deals with youth homelessness and I know the director
and communicate with her regularly. In fact, I just saw her at an event. Citizens Project is another one
that I attend their annual breakfast every year. I ve got to know several of those folks and they are very
vocal and outspoken of the LGBTQ community so that s a great point we have several organizations

Possible Causes Of The Great Recession
Recessions have damaged the country multiple times and have multiple causes. The Great Recession
was caused by individuals and the big banks in the country, not Wall Street. People were trying to get
money quickly and were willing to believe lies to get it. People lost their homes and livelihood but the
richest people in the country were mostly unaffected by the recession and were able to continue on
with their lives. Economists always thought the housing market would straighten up and there was no
need to worry. Unfortunately, people bought expensive homes with loans and thought they could sell
the homes and get more money to pay their loans. Banks were not very picky on who they gave loans

Tupac The Man Who Grew From Concrete Analysis
The Man Who Grew From Concrete Tupac was the man who grew from concrete, despite and

select few poems that intrigued me. My favorite being What of Fame? Others like: Life through my
eyes, Sometimes I cry, If I Fail, No win dream poem, also stood out to me. All of these poems have a
common theme of Me vs. the World. Depression is a big motive for Shakur in his writing, given that
his heart is filled with sorrow. He even wrote a song about his heart turning cold. Shakur consistantly
to use metaphors in his writing, along with masculine rhymes. Being a song artist, it s only natural.
Metaphors allow him a creative outlet for his feelings while making his ideas easier for the reader to

He often switches between text and the proper spelling as this can be seen in the last passage. He uses
a lot of masculine rhymes and a very steady rhythm, almost as if he is rapping. Given that a lot of his

pace of a beat for me personally, because I viewed all his poems as songs. He s a very simple writer,
not much of a lyricist, and his rhymes are mostly male rhymes. His grammar utilizes text language,
and can be found in nearly every poem in his book. Tupac uses text language to keep it simple, and to
help with the flow his ideas. He has an incredible sense of rhyme and rhythm and meter. His overall
style is one that countless people fall in love with and one that all can understand. The reason Tupac is
as big as he is, is because there s truth to his writing and a message for every type of person. This
makes him a very relatable poet, and people like to feel connected to

that it can be done in a situation where the volcano erupts more than anything to know what to do. But
you should always ask when was the last time it erupted, it is advisable to live near the areas of the

Semiotics And Interactive Design Of Black And White Essay
Introduction
For my Annotated Research Kit, I have explored Black and White (colours), semiotics and interactive
design.
The first keyword I have explored is Black and White. This is an illustration style that I have up until
recently, been using in my studio work, and in my own personal practices as a graphic designer. Black
and White also fits in with the culture of today s younger generation, in which their taste of visual
style and graphic design preference fits in with my Black and White design style.
On a similar level, I used Black and White in an animation advertisement for the New Zealand Safe
Campaign. My intention of using a Black and White watercolour style was to make the animation
appear simple and appealing. I combined the idea of black and white with a watercolour visual style to
help bring about the sense of a natural and real animation story about the sad life of pig farming today.
The second keyword I have explored is semiotics. Semiotics improves everyday life by simplifying
matters and information through the interpretation of simple icons. Without this, people s everyday
life would be much difficult than today as we naturally learn faster and better through visuals and
imagery.
My last keyword is interactive design, which is something that is always around us. From the way we
interact with computers to apps from the Apple store to accessing the ATM and reading an online
eBook.
Ultimately, interactive design is about finding a solution to a

Civil Unrest Of The United States
From its conception, the United States of America has been in a very unique position of being able to
develop in any fashion. Under another group of intelligent minds it could have been far different from
the democratic republic that we know it to be today. A key factor in the development of this
government was time. Although there would be some civil unrest in the years following the War of
Independence, the next major outbreak of violence would not occur until the French Revolution.
These circumstances alleviated pressure to establish a strict system of government, and gave the
opportunity for trial and error. In examining the early failures of legislation, understanding what was
wanted, and what concessions were needed, you can start to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

For states like Maryland and New York, civic duties and powers were limited to the wealthy elite. In
contrast, states with a broader middle class, like New Jersey and Pennsylvania, favored a larger voting
population with less restrictive requirements to participate, and limited the power given to elected
officials. State constitutions laid the groundwork for the next stage of development, a federal
government. The Articles of Confederation were just as important as the Declaration of Independence
in helping to establish the legitimacy of separating from England and becoming a new nation, but the
document was not without its shortcomings. The biggest concern of the Continental Congress was
ensuring that any system created would be protected from potential despotism. The weak framework
of the Articles could be viewed as their focus on what they didn t want, instead of focusing on what
they really needed. This wasn t a document concerning one nation, it was a contract between thirteen
nations to ally against outside repression. For those with a strong sense of state pride, the problems
apparent throughout the Articles of Confederation could be ignored. The federal government wasn t
weak, they said. It was limited. It was designed to protect citizens from tyranny, and in that regard it
was very successful. As oppression was the biggest concern, it was repeatedly addressed in each issue.

Disadvantages Of Vote Based System
Majority rule government is all around on the planet. Europe has utilized its type of government for a
large portion of a century. North and South America are currently practically a side of the equator of
majority rule government; Africa is encountering equitable change; and new, popular governments
have flourished in Asia. Popular government might be a word natural to most, yet it is an idea still
misconstrued and abused. Flexibility and vote based system are regularly used to mean the same thing,
yet they are not the same. Individuals in majority rules system have numerous rights. This type of
government isn t only for the administration, it helps the general population. Additionally how vote
based pioneers are chosen.
Majority rules system is generally useful for little and more seasoned groups, where the entire town or
group can get together and vote together on choices that can be favorable position to every one of the
towns individuals. This type of majority rule government is known as an immediate vote based
system. Cutting edge society, with its size and multifaceted nature, offers couple of chances for direct
popular government. Today, the most widely recognized type of vote based system, whether for a
town of 50,000 or countries of 50 million, is illustrative popular government, in which nationals

Essay on Argument Against Reality Television
What pleasure do you get from watching a group of people humiliate themselves in the name of
television? Media both in the UK and around the world seem to have discovered that so called reality
shows are very profitable, resulting in a growing string of such shows in recent years. Although not all
are successful, many do achieve significant popularity and cultural prominence. That does not mean,
however, that they are good for society or that they should be aired. Can you honestly say, that after
absorbing the reality rubbish, you have learned something?

As I m sure you are aware of, people, children in particular, love television. A lot of things they see on

The Sunni Shia Conflict Essay
Sunni Shia Conflict Syria is currently all over the news regarding what many have to come to see as a
civil war. A term like civil war needs to identify the players and the reasons for the war. In this case
the players are being identified as pro government or antigovernment with a Sunni or Shia overtone.
Sunni and Shia are the two major sects of Islam and both have a historical based conflict going back to
the death of the Prophet Muhammad and how Muslims should be governed. This conflict has caused
tensions and violence to flare up throughout Islamic history. This conflict has carried into modern
times and has becoming a rallying point for Muslim people calling for change with their government

Ali s son Husayn was sought out and asked to lead a revolt against the Uyammad s. When Husayn set

Husayn and 72 of his followers were killed on the plains of Karbala, Iraq. Thus the Shi at Ali (Party of
Ali) or Shia sect of Islam was born (Egger 2004). The Sunni sect would continue to support what they
saw as the traditional path of Islam. From this initial split other divisions and changes occurred within
the religious practices and laws of Islam. While both share a belief in the Qur an and the sunna
(sayings or actions) of the Prophet Muhammad there are religious and legal differences. Imams are by
the Shia definition the divinely guided ones but the Sunni defines Imaans as saints (Diffen n.d.). The
Shia declared Ali and his descendants Imams with a special connection to the will of God with
religious and legal authorities. The number of Imams and who were truly the divinely guided Imams
would split Shias. There arose many branches but it came down to three main ones the Twelvers, the
Seveners, and Zayids (Goldschmidt Jr. 2013). The Imams were mystical beings and the Twelvers

Examples Of Flashbacks In Toni Morrison s Beloved
Beloved: How the Past Affects a Person
Beloved is full of intense scenes that leave readers on the edge of their seats wondering what will
happen next. Some of the most powerful scenes are flashbacks, past experiences that characters come
face to face with. What makes these flashbacks so important is that they help make the reader
understand why the characters interact with each other the way they do. In Beloved, Toni Morrison
uses a loose structure and weaves flashbacks into everyday life to create a connection through which
readers can better understand the character s past.
In the beginning of the novel, the reader is introduced to the idea of flashbacks, which remain short
and are intertwined seamlessly within the text. The readers learn to be active when reading, and also
pay close attention to the details within the flashbacks to learn more about the characters that their past
lives.
The most significant flashbacks in Part One are when the reader learns about Sethe s past, and how
she killed her crawling already? baby. Inside, two boys bled in the sawdust at the feet of a nigger
woman holding a blood soaked child to her chest with one hand and an infant by the heels in the other
(Morrison 175). Here is where the reader first learns how the crawling already baby dies: Sethe killed
her and attempted to kill the rest of the children. When Sethe saw the schoolteacher, she ran to the
shed to try to save her children from slavery. She tried to make the ultimate sacrifice

The Similarities and Differences of King Arthur and Lord Bercilak
There are similarities between every ideal and thought imaginable. There are also notable differences
between the infintant ideals, tangible or not. The comparisons can seem unlikely however are still
comparable and contrastable. Likewise Arthurian characters are closers than they seem at first look.
King Arthur and Lord Bercilak compare and and contrast through their ways of hospitalities,
principles, and religious views.
Both King Arthur and Lord Bercilak show immense amounts of hospitalities to the guest whom of
which enter their castle. As stated, As King Arthur s court feasts on New Year s Day, a mysterious
Green Knight appears offering a strange challenge (Alex). Clearly Arthur feeds anyone who entered
the castle. Also welcomed all guest with great gesture, just like he showed to the Green Knight. For
Bercilak it is stated that, Bercilak will exchange anything he captures hunting with anything Gawain
receives while staying in the castle (The Natural). He gave food in return for his wife s gifts which
shows that he was willing to feed Sir Gawain. Also he gave shelter to Gawain when he could have
easily rejected the knight. Both King Arthur and Lord Bercilak are proven hospitable by nature.
Both the King and the Lord keep their responsibilities and show their principles. In the book Morte D
Arthur Sir Malory wrote, The the king got his spear in both his hands and ran towards Sir Mordred,
crying and saying, Traitor, now thy deathday has come! (Malory 189). During the time of King Arthur
killing rebels would be considered the duty of a king. Also he shows the principle of keeping his
kingdom intact with his citizens from falling into slavery, which would have inevitably happened if
Sir Mordred had taken rule of the realm of Arthur. Likewise stated by Morpurgo, The Knight strikes,
only nicking Gawain, then reveals himself as Bertilak, admitting that he arranged the attempted
seduction as a test of Gawain s virtue (Morpurgo). Lord Bercilak committed his part of the deal
without killing Gawain. Also teaching knights and showing them how to improve themselves

Essay about Campbell Soup Company Audit
Campbell Soup Company
Background
Campbell was founded shortly before the start of the Civil War. Abraham Anderson and Joseph
Campbell began manufacturing canned vegetables and fruit preserves. In 1976, Campbell bought out
Anderson s interest and renamed the firm the Joseph Campbell Preserving Company. Later, Arthur
Dorrance was Campbell s new partner. In the early 1920s, John Dorrance, Arthur Dorrance s nephew,
was the sole owner of the Campbell Soup Company, which was the largest producer of canned soup
products. Unfortunately, as the twentieth century was coming to a close, the nation s appetite for

Trade Loading
Campbell offered sizable trade discounts near the end of accounting period to entice customers to
make product purchases that they would otherwise defer. By this way, a company can use price
concessions to prop up its reported revenues and profits. Plaintiffs pointed out that PwC auditors were
aware of the excessive trade loading by their client and this should have been a red flag for PwC to
investigate the possibility that their client was fraudulently misrepresenting its operating results. The
judge agree with the plaintiffs that PwC s workpapers revealed the firm was aware of Campbell s
disproportionately sales near the end of quarterly reporting periods. However, the he disagreed with
the assertion that PwC should have considered those heavy sales a red flag. Instead, he pointed out
that PwC s workpapers referred to the large, period ending sales as a traditional trend in Campbell s
operating results.
This traditional trend may apply to Campbell s business environment, but may not to other industry.
An auditor had better understand the industry environment he or she involves in to judge whether
disproportionately sales near the end of quarterly reporting periods are normal or not.

This is a relatively new development and there are few sources that present clear and readable
accounts of it. It is a reaction to the belief of postmodernists that Marx concentrated excessively on
production, at the cost of consumption.
Introduction
This concept, despite its variety of meanings and definitions, is used to refer to many aspects of social

We have become disillusioned and no longer expect the world to become a better place.
Metranarratives have partly been discredited because, in an era of global media in which we learn
more and more about other peoples beliefs and lifestyles, it becomes less and less possible to regard
one lifestyle or one belief system as the true one .
Dominic Strinati
Strinati suggests that, post modern TV and film become preoccupied merely with surface style and
imagery, rather than deeper underlying themes, which might relate to the realities of the human
condition. Action blockbuster movies dwell on special effects, rather than strong plots and TV drama
departs from realist plots of the 1960 s (which attempted to look at serious issues such as
homelessness, Cathy Come Home and embraces a surreal world in which reality is often confused;
For example, Twin Peaks, or more recently The X Files and American Gothic. Kaplan (1987)
identified pop and rock videos as perfect examples of post modernist culture because they abandon all
notion of narrative structure there is no attempt to tell a story , rather the power of the rock video lies
purely in the collage of images mixed with music.

A Brief Note On The North American Free Trade Agreement
Employment is the main source of income for the majority of the population in United States, Canada
and Mexico. Therefore, the most prevalent method of measuring a trade agreements impact on the
well being of the populace can be found by calculating the number of jobs gained or lost as a result of
the agreement and the quality of said jobs. The largest trade agreement in North America is called
NAFTA. The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) was officially signed on January 1st
1994, creating the largest and one of the most powerful free trade regions of the world. NAFTA
governs the entire spectrum of trade and commerce on the North American continent uniting the
economies of Canada, Mexico, and the United States. This agreement has ... Show more content on

Initial proponents of NAFTA argued that the agreement, seeking to liberalize trade between the U.S.,
Canada, and Mexico, would help generate thousands of jobs and reduce income disparity in the
region. Opponents, however, warned that the agreement would cause huge job losses in the United
States as companies moved production to Mexico to lower cost (Villarreal and Fergusson, 2014). Now
that the agreement has been in place for over 20 years the results yielded can be clearly discussed.
One of the biggest proponents of debate comes from the losses and gains taking place in the work
force; more specifically how the agreement has impacted jobs across all three regions. As stated
earlier, it has been a fear of many that developing trade relations with developing countries such as
Mexico, would cause U.S. job losses and potentially equate to rising unemployment. The reason for
this is because the wages in Mexico were quite lower than that of the U.S., giving Mexico the default
advantage in manufacturing goods that might require significant labor. Several reports found that
NAFTA had little or no impact on aggregate employment (Hornbeck, 2004). Hornbeck (2004) reports
that the Carnegie Endowment study suggests that there was a net gain in U.S. employment in the first
ten years following the Act, creating between 0 to 270,000 jobs.
The Carnegie study is just one of many that state s NAFTA s net effect on jobs was negligible;
however other data suggests otherwise. In an

  • 2. Discussion of Black Elk Speaks Essay Discussion of Black Elk Speaks Black Elk was a holy man of the Oglala band of the Lakota Sioux nation. Black Elk interpreted his life as a holy man as the story of a mighty vision (BES, p. 2). As a child, Black Elk was blessed with a great vision from the other world. In receiving his great vision, Black Elk received a great power, a power to make over (BES, p. 201), a power to make things better for sick and suffering individuals and nations. He did not know it at the time, but this vision would be the blueprint of his life. It would guide him through times when he doubted his importance to his people. He had other visions, but they all tied into the great vision he experienced as a child. Black Elk made incredible ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These Grandfathers presented Black Elk with gifts to help him on his journey. A wooden cup, a bow and arrows, a white wing of cleansing, an herb to heal, a sacred pipe a flowering stick and the power to make live and to destroy were the tools that were given to him. Then, the Grandfathers showed Black Elk what was to become of his people. He was shown a holy tree which once had been flowering and was now gone. The people he was supposed to lead were thin and starving, and Black Elk cried as he saw the fate of his people. Once he was placed back in the world of his family he was enlightened yet confused. He was unable to do anything with the powers he was given until he was older. As he came to be a man, he was blessed with a gift of helping people. He worked curing illnesses until he felt it was time that his life should take another turn. In 1883, the last of the bison herds were killed. Black Elk could not understand why the Wasichus would kill animals without using everything it had to offer. That year Black Elk said, All our people now were settling down in square gray houses, scattered here and there across this hungry land, and around them the Wasichus had drawn a line to keep them in. The nation s hoop was broken, and there was no center any longer for the flowering tree. The people were in despair. (BES, p. 213 214) In 1886, as part of a show, Black Elk traveled to London to study the Wasichus and their way of life. By studying ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Morphology Of Species Of Snakes The term morphology refers to a division of biology that looks at the forms of living organisms and the relationships between them and their physical structures. In terms of morphology, snakes are quite interesting, especially when it comes to venomous snakes of Kansas. Here, we will describe snakes, their structure, what they eat, how often, reproduction, habitat and other interesting facts about snakes in general. Then, we will examine closely venomous snakes that are indigenous to Kansas. Snakes are elongated, flexible, and limbless reptiles from the suborder Serpentes. There are approximately 2,900 different species of snakes. There are around 700 different species of venomous snakes and 250 of these are able to kill a human with a single bite. Snake are generally carnivorous. They eat various items such as termites, birds, eggs, mice, rabbits, and other reptiles/mammals. Snakes do not chew their prey; they swallow it whole and their moveable maxillary allows them to swallow large prey three times the size of their heads. They have rear facing teeth which helps them keep their prey captive until they can swallow it. Some venomous snakes will inject their prey with venom while constricting snakes will squeeze the breath from their prey until they die. Snakes do not need to hunt food every day because they only eat once or twice per week. Large snakes such as anacondas and pythons can survive for up to an entire year without food. Others with a construction background and had seen a picture of the construction on the wall say that Hultgren Construction did not have i beams and other equipment that are necessary when working with a load bearing wall. It appears that they did not know how to do their job properly. It is sad that the Hultgren Construction company went against the law and others had to pay for the company s mistake. Hultgren Construction has had not previous safety violations. It is unfortunate that their first violation caused a fatality. There was many things that happened as a result of this building collapse and many things will happen in the future as a result of it. This catastrophic event caused the area surrounding the collapsed building to close down as there were fears that the surrounding buildings damaged from the rubble might also collapse. The United States accounted for 323,018 of those deaths. Almost 40 million deaths could have been avoided without World War 1. So was the damage caused by World War 1 worth it? Was it beneficial for the United States to enter the Great War. Yes, it was. The benefits accompanied with America entering the Great War largely outweigh the detriments that the war brought. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the early twentieth century, before the war began, the role of women was already changing drastically. Women were working more, gaining a better education and having fewer children. Then, during the war, women played a crucial role in aiding the war efforts. One way women assisted in the war was moving into jobs that were previously vacated by men who were drafted into the war. Women also assisted in munitions factories. These are factories that make war materials. Women could have sewed uniforms or helped make weapons. These factories were the number one employer for women during 1918. After the introduction of conscription in 1916 women began to work in jobs that were traditional reserved for men. Employment rates for women during World War I went up from 23.6% (1914) to 46.7% (1918). Because the population of women in America benefited the war efforts greatly, in 1918, the women s suffrage amendment was passed in senate with the necessary 2/3 votes. America s involvement in the Great War led directly to the passing of the 19th amendment, granting women the right to vote. It is now clear that the United States should enter the Great War because the war will benefit the United States economically, will help the United States gain a more powerful military, and the end of the war will lead to the 19th amendment thus allowing women to vote. • 8. Analysis Of Soltice And Ransom By Tracy K. Smith In her collection of poetry Life on Mars, Tracy K. Smith brings real world problems into focus with Solstice and Ransom . The main idea in Solstice is the geese that forced the Hudson River plane crash in New York, while Smith writes of the Somalian pirates and sea pollution in Ransom . However, these are just the literal meanings behind the two poems that have deeper meanings relating to the state of the world and how humans are playing a role in it, politically and physically. There is a constant struggle in the poems Solstice and Ransom that where there is always an underdog, whether it be protesters attempting to make a change or Somalian pirates fighting back because their fishing waters have been corrupted. A main connection between these poems include their connection to the time period that Tracy K. Smith s father passed away towards the end of 2008. Because of how emotional and tragic this time period was to Smith, she holds onto the shreds of hope she had during that time, including two major events portrayed in the poems. The literal meaning behind the poem Solstice is the geese that caused flights to be disrupted at the JFK airport. These geese also flew into pilot Chesley Sully Sullenberger and killed all engine power, making him perform a miracle crash landing into the Hudson river. • 10. Computers And Its Impact On Modern Society Essay Computers In between 1943 and 1946, ENIAC was designed by John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert at University of Pennsylvania, U.S. ENIAC was a modular computer, collected of separate panels to perform different functions. Twenty of these parts were accumulators, which could not only add and subtract but hold a ten digit decimal number in memory. Numbers were passed between these units across several general purpose buses. In order to achieve its high speed, the panels had to send and receive numbers, save the answer and produce the next operation, all without any moving parts. Key to its usefulness was the ability to branch; it could produce different operations, depending on the sign of a computed result. ENIAC contained 17,468 vacuum tubes, 7200 crystal diodes, 1500 relays, 70,000 resistors, 10,000 capacitors and about 5,000,000 hand soldered joints. It weighed more than 30 tons, was roughly 2.4m × 0.9m × 30m in size, and consumed 150 kW of electricity. • 11. Literary Reflection Intent and purpose of this class The intent of this class is to give the student a well rounded overview of the basic parts of a short story or novel. These include plot, character, point of view, strong openings to a story, dialogue and writing enhancement. It is intended to help writers. It is not intended to be a literary criticism class. I will also provide a brief overview of genre, marketability and marketing promotion. I will review work for content and structure. I will not copyedit the student s work. My focus will not be on grammar or sentence structure. I will give homework assignments and it is helpful to finish the assignments. But we may move onto the next assignment if you haven t completed in the assignment within a few days. Lesson one: The Plot in the Story Introduction Good stories have a beginning, middle and end. But editors look for the plot arc, or some variation of it. If you are an established, well recognized author you might tweak The arc model, but the rest of us must slug through it. And for good reason. The arc will pull your reader through the story. It is the reason why your reader will turn the pages until the very end. It also helps the writer focus their story line, cut out the parts that are slowing it down, and highlight the parts that help move the story. Trust me, in the end The arc will be your friend. The are all the most dehumanizing ways to die, and they also killed the most people making the death tolls rise more than ever between 1340 1979. When the cold winter ends, there is a new beginning in nature where the trees and flowers start fresh as they grow once again. The poem Spring , takes us, readers, to a setting where the place shows complete nature. We are to imagine aesthetic scenery where spring has arrived and everything that happens during this season is happening right in front of us. The speaker seems to appreciate nature so much that he sees the complete difference between the seasons and that he admires the birth of the natural world. He explains his feelings in almost all aspects as he describes the rinsing in his ears in one line which may mean that, his mind, soul, and body is refreshed with what the natural sound that he hears during this season. As for him, he conceptualizes the natural world as a pure creation of God and that it helps in spiritual awakening. Here is the interpretation and analysis of the poem based on the sections that respect the grammar and meaning of its sentences: Nothing is so beautiful as Spring When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush; In the first line, the speaker says that there is no other thing that is as similar to the beauty of Spring. With the dash after the word spring, it means that the speaker is trying to let the readers believe the first statement that nothing is so beautiful as Spring. The Veil is a symbol in the book Persepolis that symbolizes a fashion statement, like wearing jeggings or a fedora. However, neither jeggings nor a fedora are closely tied with religious fundamentalism. It is called in most countries a hijab, and its used for women to cover their hair and its meant to be a protection for them. The Veil represents a symbol of oppression of women which means the constriction of personal freedom that accompanies the revolution. • 16. Persuasive Speech About Youth Suicide Nicole: Man it would just warm my heart. I know too many people who have lost children. I know too many people here in the Manitou Springs school district. There were two youth who took their lives in one year. I mean it hits home across the nation of course across the globe. You study suicide rates for a variety of other causes across the globe, but it s everywhere. El Paso County has one of the highest rates of youth suicide so yeah I mean I would feel like I was actually providing true public and community service by just doing as much as I possibly could to support families in order to prevent that and to just bring some awareness to that. Half of it is just awareness and the ability to have the conversation around it Andrew: I think that that s huge Nicole and I think that s something that should really be talked about and needs to be talked about. I also think as we re looking over not just messaging, but also fundraising networks, we ve certainly seen an increase in youth homelessness in Manitou and neighboring Colorado Springs and I think as you stated there s been an increase youth suicide and just coming from my experience as a gay man I think there s some connections there. There would be a lot of people in the LGBTQ community interested in helping people who are = committed to those sort of issues with first being that LGBTQ youth make up about forty percent of the homeless population and thus are more prone to teen suicide so I mean looking for different demographic and groups whether it be looking at the LGBTQ community or the Latino community or whatnot I think you know it is not just good for outreach and messaging to those communities, but also potentially fundraising bases as well. Nicole: Absolutely. I m so glad you brought that up because Urban Peak is an organization we have down here. It s an amazing organization that deals with youth homelessness and I know the director and communicate with her regularly. In fact, I just saw her at an event. • 20. Semiotics And Interactive Design Of Black And White Essay Introduction For my Annotated Research Kit, I have explored Black and White (colours), semiotics and interactive design. The first keyword I have explored is Black and White. This is an illustration style that I have up until recently, been using in my studio work, and in my own personal practices as a graphic designer. Black and White also fits in with the culture of today s younger generation, in which their taste of visual style and graphic design preference fits in with my Black and White design style. On a similar level, I used Black and White in an animation advertisement for the New Zealand Safe Campaign. My intention of using a Black and White watercolour style was to make the animation appear simple and appealing. I combined the idea of black and white with a watercolour visual style to help bring about the sense of a natural and real animation story about the sad life of pig farming today. The second keyword I have explored is semiotics. Semiotics improves everyday life by simplifying matters and information through the interpretation of simple icons. Without this, people s everyday life would be much difficult than today as we naturally learn faster and better through visuals and imagery. My last keyword is interactive design, which is something that is always around us. From the way we interact with computers to apps from the Apple store to accessing the ATM and reading an online eBook. Ultimately, interactive design is about finding a solution to a ...
