Cascading Social Science Open Educational Resources Anna Gruszczynska, C-SAP (Higher Education Academy Subject Centre for Sociology, Anthropology and Politics)
Background to the project Working definition of Open Educational Resources [OER]: ‘Digitised materials offered freely and openly for educators, students and self-learners to use and reuse for teaching, learning and research.’ OECD C-SAP project was part of Phase 2 of the HEFCE-funded UKOER programme, managed jointly by the Higher Education Academy (Academy) and JISC. Phase 2 expanded the work of the UK OER pilot phase around the release of OER material.

Project overview (2) Collaborative methodology embedded within the paradigm of communities of practice Focus on the “why” rather than the “how” of Open Educational Resources [OERs] Emphasis on the broader context (cultural/institutional) in which OERs are created and (re)used and any resulting issues and/or tensions  Cascade framework: Model of release, discovery and reuse of OERs which can be “cascaded”, that is, taken up and incorporated into new contexts
Cascade tools Set of tools which will allow academics to reflect upon their own practice and examine conditions in which their teaching resources can be used/reused and shared Existing OER resources to support OER release Influences from the pilot phase Reflexive tasks Student engagement Web2.0 tools
