Hominids first appeared as the Earth cooled and became more arid. The earliest known hominid is Ardipithecus ramidus. Key characteristics of hominids include bipedal locomotion, thick dental enamel, and larger brains and cranium sizes over time. Early hominid species include Australopithecus anamensis, A. afarensis, and Paranthropus. Homo habilis were the first remains of the genus Homo found, with bigger brains and less body hair.
