Standard Test For Ash From Petroleum Products , D482
Ash contents is defined as the inorganic residue that remains after combustion of the oil in air at specific high temperature. Ash ranges from 0.1% to 0.2%. The ash content of a fuel is a measure of the amount of inorganic noncombustible material it contains. Some of the ash forming constituents occur naturally in crude oil: others are present as a result of refining or contamination during storage or distribution. For instance, it could be due to the presence of compounds of the following elements: vanadium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, zinc, lead, iron, nickel. Or it could be picked up by the crude oil during storage and handling. Metals content above 200 ppm are considered to be significant but the variations are very large. The higher the ash content the higher is the tendency of the crude oil to form sludge or sediment. Oils containing more than 0.05% ash are considered high ash oils; those containing less than 0.02% ash are considered low ash oils.

Calorimeter to measure the calorific value of fuelsatechnicalboard
Calorimetry is the field of science that deals with the measurement of the state of a body with respect to the thermal aspects in order to examine its physical and chemical changes. The changes could be physical such as melting, evaporation or could also be chemical such as burning, acid-base neutralisation etc.
A calorimeter is what is used to measure the thermal changes of a body.
Calorimetry is applied extensively in the fields of thermochemistry in calculating the enthalpy, stability, heat capacity etc.
What Is a Calorimeter?
A calorimeter is a device used for heat measurements necessary for calorimetry. It mainly consists of a metallic vessel made of materials which are good conductors of electricity such as copper and aluminium etc. There is also a facility for stirring the contents of the vessel. This metallic vessel with a stirrer is kept in an insulating jacket to prevent heat loss to the environment. There is just one opening through which a thermometer can be inserted to measure the change in thermal properties inside. Let us discuss how exactly heat measurements are made. In the previous article, we discussed the specific heat capacity of substances.
Such measurements can be made easily with this. Say in a calorimeter a fixed amount of fuel is burned. The vessel is filled with water, and the fuel is burned, leading to the heating of the water. Heat loss by the fuel is equal to the heat gained by the water. This is why it is important to insulate the calorimeter from the environment; to improve the accuracy of the experiment. This change in heat can be measured through the thermometer. Through such a measurement, we can find out both the heat capacity of water and also the energy stored inside a fuel.
Uses of Calorimetry
It is well known now that matter always obeys the principle of lowest energy i.e. given the option, the matter will exist in the lowest energy state possible. Despite this, matter can have a variety of energetic states. Uranium atoms, for example, are a powerhouse.
The energy of matter has a profound effect on its natural occurrence and its reactivity etc. If we can unravel the relationship between them, then we can predict the natural occurrence, reactivity and physical properties based on the energy measurements we make through calorimetry. Understanding the thermodynamic properties of a substance will inevitably yield answers to structure and other properties.

Investigation on evaporative emission from a gasoline polycarbonate fuel tankeSAT Journals
Abstract It is estimated that about 15 to 20 percent of the vehicle hydrocarbon (HC) emission were due to evaporation of fuel. Hence a need was felt to understand the extent of evaporative emission from gasoline fuel system. A polycarbonate fuel tank that is predominantly used in two wheeled vehicles is considered for study. Emission can surface to atmosphere in three modes; diffusion through fuel tank wall, escaping through vent in tank and when fuel tank cap is opened for refueling. The average temperature condition which prevails in south India which is in the range of 27o C to 34oC was considered. From which temperatures which were at proximity to peak high and low day time were chosen. The complete set up was placed in open atmosphere to replicate the working environment. The emission constituents and its levels were measured by conducting the test particularly for averaged out day time high and low temperature condition. Further diffusion test was conducted within a range of 34oC to 36oC, this temperature is considered to be range of maximum temperature which prevails in south India. From which a temperature was chosen and the test was conducted. This comparative study gives an indication of emission and its quantity from the fuel tank at the ambient temperature. Keywords: Evaporative Emission, Fuel Tank, HC Emission

how to determine the Carbon residue
1. Lab report of Energy Engineering lab
Title:
To determine the carbon residue of given sample.
Apparatus:
1. Porcelain crucible
2. Skidmore crucible
3. Chimney wire support
4. Sand bath
5. Kerosene oil(sample)
Theory:
Carbon residue is what the leftover particles of a fuel product are transformed into. The
carbon residue of a fuel is the tendency to form carbon deposits under high temperature
conditions in an inert atmosphere. This is an important value for the crude oil refinery, and
usually one of the measurements in a crude oil assay. Carbon residue is an important
measurement for the feed to the refinery process fluid catalytic cracking and delayed coking.
High amounts of carbon residue can be damaging to the environment.
Procedure:
Weight approximately one gram of sample oil free of moisture and suspended
material in the crucible.
Place this crucible in the center of skidmore level the sand in the sand bath and set
skidmore crucible on triangle right in center of sand bath.
Apply covers to both skidmore and porcelain air crucible. The covers must have
arrangement of free exist of vapors as they formed.
Heat from strong flame from gas burner so that free ignition occurs in 10 minutes and
a blue flame appear on the alimony immediately.
Moves or tie the gas burner so that gas flame plays on the side of the chimney for the
purpose of ignition of vapors. When vapors cease to burn and no more blue flame
appear. Read just the burner and increase the heat so that sand bath sheet is cherry red
and maintain exactly for 7 minutes. The total time for this is approximately 28 to 32
minutes.
Remove the burner and allow the apparatus to cool until no smoke appear and then
removed the cover of skidmore crucible.
Take out crucible with tongs and placed it in desiccators. Cool and weight the
crucible.
