Biochemistry is the study of chemical substances found in living organisms and their interactions. There are two main types of biochemical substances: bioinorganic substances like water and salts, and bioorganic substances such as carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. While these substances have no life on their own, their chemical interactions within cells are able to sustain life. Carbohydrates specifically serve many functions like energy storage, providing carbon atoms for other biomolecules, and forming structural components of cells and molecules. They are classified based on their complexity from monosaccharides to polysaccharides. Many biological molecules display chirality or "handedness" where nonsuperimposable mirror forms exist.
