REFLECTION OF LIGHT
Reflection is one of the distinctive
properties of light. It is the reflection of
light, which enables us to see anything.
Reflection: The rebound of rays of light from
an elegant and glossy surface is called
reflection or reflection of light. It is related
to a football bouncing back after colliding
with a wall or any hard surface.
REFRACTION OF LIGHT
Refraction is the bending of light (it also happens
with sound, water and other waves) as it passes
from one transparent substance into another.
This bending by refraction makes it possible for us
to have lenses, magnifying glasses, prisms and
rainbows. Even our eyes depend upon this bending
of light. Without refraction, we wouldn’t be able
to focus light onto our retina.

Vacuum 1.00 Crown glass 1.53
Air 1.0003 Quartz 1.54
Water 1.33 Flint glass 1.61
Ethanol 1.36 Diamond 2.42
PROBLEM SOLVING
1. A ray of light traveling through air
is incident upon a sheet of crown
glass at an angle of 30 degrees.
What is the angle of refraction?
2. A light ray hits a surface at an angle of 16
degrees. The material on the other side of
the surface has an index of refraction of 1.14
and the light is making an angle of 15
degree with the surface when it exists on
this side. What is the index of refraction on
the incident side on of the interfere?
ACTIVITY
1. At the interfere between two materials, a
light ray is at an angle of 3 degrees with the
interface on a side with an index of
refraction of 1.7. If the light is at an angle of
4.5 degrees on the other side of the
interface, what is the index of refraction on
this side?
2. A beam of light travelling through air
enters a transparent material at an angle of
incidence at 34 degrees , with the refracted
beam's angle being 26 degrees . What is the
index of refraction of the material?
3. A beam of light travelling through air
enters a medium with an index of refraction
of 1.51 and goes through it at an angle of 41
degrees. What is the angle of incidence?
4. Light travels through a medium with an
index of refraction of 1.04. It comes to the
surface of another medium at an angle of 83
degrees. If the index of refraction for this
medium is 2.11, what angle does the refracted
light make with respect to the surface?
EVALUATION
A beam of light travelling through air
enters a medium with an index of
refraction of 1.51 and goes through it at
an angle of 90 degrees. What is the angle
of incidence?
A beam of light travelling through air
enters a transparent material at an angle
of incidence at 34 degrees, with the
refracted beam's angle being 56 degrees.
What is the index of refraction of the
material?
A light ray hits a surface at an angle of 16
degrees. The material on the other side of the
surface has an index of refraction of 1.14 and the
light is making an angle of 15 degrees with the
surface when it exits on this side. What is the
index of refraction on the incident side of the
interface?
